if we are ever listening to a musical, PLEASE know that I am having the time of my life- but also, I am imagining ways I could make it gayer. like, I love the original, don’t get me wrong. but gimme a masc lesbian benny who’s in love with her boss’ femme daughter, nina. give me an awkward nb emmett forrest who is tripping head over heels for this young, blonde lawyer who doesn’t even realize how many stereotypes she’s defying. show us an elphaba and glinda who are allowed to be more than just roommates. newsies who are able to be ✨newsies✨.  it doesn’t seem that hard.

Usnavi had come down with a cold. Despite all the orange juice he drank to stay healthy, it just didn't pull through.
While Sonny ran the bodega, Usnavi sat curled up in a blanket on his couch. Piles of tissues and a container of cold medicine were scattered on the ground near him. He planned to clean it up after he got better. If he got better.
One of the main reasons he tried to stay healthy was due to the trauma of seeing his parents get sick and die. The image was forever engraved in his mind: watching his parents slowly wither away together after months before finally perishing just before Christmas. That was also the reason he pestered Sonny about being healthy. Sonny never knew his aunt and uncle very well, considering how young he was when they died, so he didn't know the entire story. He just knew they had died.
As Usnavi obsessed over the worst-case scenario, Benny knocked on the door. Usnavi jumped, slightly startled by the sudden noise.
"Uh, yeah, come in," Usnavi croaked.
Benny walked into the apartment, immediately spotting Usnavi. He walked over and scoffed, "Sick? Crazy, you never get sick."
Usnavi groaned in response. He didn't have the energy to make a snarky comeback or properly respond at all. Benny's teasing demeanor fell as he saw all the tissues on the ground.
"Either you're overdoing it, or you're pretty sick. I'm gonna go back down to the bodega and grab you a coffee, then we can stay up here and hang out and, I dunno, watch TV? Sound good?"
Usnavi nodded. A cup of coffee sounded heavenly. Benny nodded back and patted his back in an attempt to nonverbally tell him to hang in there. Benny walked back out of the apartment.
Just with that little bit of care from Benny, Usnavi's fears shrunk just a bit. He remembered that his parents didn't have anyone but Abuela to take care of them since he was too young to be helpful. Now, he had Benny, Vanessa, Nina, and the other Rosarios to help him. He had a community he could rely on. Just knowing that helped with his worries and he could finally relax a bit.

I’m a little salty they didn’t include Sunrise because it’s one of my favorites but I also think that racism with Benny thing was actually an interesting and complex plot that ought to be included
Like we need to heavily consider the way that Latinos see racism and discrimination because y’all it can really be so present and it ought to be talked about more

Another day, another In the Heights.
Tumblr media
I've watched this musical over three times and each time I sobbed my heart out and hollered my throat away. The songs are just so full of heart and soul, and the story is essentially a culmination of family, home and purpose and I love that so, so much.
I loved how much time they gave to tender introduced each character with their own style and theme and story. When Nina's theme came on screen I just, I just melted, honestly. I related SO hard. Studying away from home can be a highly pressuring journey, what with your parents wishes and your people's expectations riding on your shoulders. I love that Nina was able to find her purpose for going to college in the end, it gives me hope that maybe some day, somehow I'll find my purpose of being here too.
Benny is a solid bro. I love him.

Also can we give it up for the local lesbians!!!!!!!!!! I didn't notice them the first time but watching it now I'm like how did I miss this????

Usnavi and Vanessa's relationship was such a right person, wrong time situation (again, hella relatable) until the very end, where Usnavi finally found where his home was, where his home could be. The line "I'm running to make it home, but home's where Vanessa's running away from." was SUCH a powerful line.
Honestly there are so many powerful lines in this musical including, ironically "We are powerless." The double meaning that that line holds (the blackout and them as a people) along with the innate desire to dance, to sing and to be strong despite all that was running against them. Honestly just. Beautiful story-telling.

And lastly, the woman who made me sob my heart out, the woman who shouldered the stories of her people, who gave detail to the little things, who appreciated the bread crumbs, the stars in the sky. Abuela Claudia.
Tumblr media
She has my heart and my entire soul. Her story is such a compelling one, the foundation of so many immigrant families, the older generation who fought tooth and nail for the younger generations to grow their roots and stick their feet. The older generation who made a home out of foreign lands. Pacienca y fe.
The search for home and its meaning has always been a frequent question in the back of my mind, and while I haven't found mine yet - this musical gives me hope that it is somewhere, in the heights. I'll find it, some day.

Nina: Alana’s late. What happened?
Jared: I woke her up at 8 and pretended it was 11.
Benny: I wrote a fake schedule saying we were starting at 9 instead of 12.
Jared: I changed her clock from AM to PM.
Nina: ...I think you may have overdone it.
Alana: WHAT YEAR IS IT?!
(I now need a name for Star-Shaped Girls + their chaotic boyfriends, someone send me ideas.)
