I was tagged by @fancy-a-dance-brigadier to post the titles of all my current WIPs so here they are. I don't have a lot because I try not to start too many at the same time (I have learned over time that starting a lot of different pieces is the perfect recipe for me to never finish anything.)
Cargo plane fic: in this modern AU Sisko and Bashir are cargo pilots flying for the same airline and this piece specifically is about one specific flight and the hotel night they spend together once they land. It wasn't meant to become this huge, long-haul project (ha) but it did; and now I'm nerding out about safety procedures, cockpit layouts and checklists in addition to trying to make it good. Exploring their dynamic in that context is really interesting.
Moonlit date by the lake: exactly what it says in the title. This is my entry for the upcoming Siskoshir Sunday so this is the one I'm focusing on right now. I'm trying Ben POV for this one and I'm excited about it!
UFP-BAJ-DS9: a multi-chapter fic I'm updating whenever I feel like writing a new chapter. Its main character is an Andorian OC which was a background character in my "Stroll Across the Promenade" series, and I liked her so much I gave her her own story. She's an Air Traffic Controller at DS9 and that's basically it - a look at everyday life working on DS9. She occasionally meets characters like Sisko, Dax and Bashir but most characters are OCs.
Doommaker: a Garashir Bond holosuite fic. It's actually almost finished but I'm having trouble editing it. I started it ages ago… James Bond is one of my special interests (RIP to me) so I really loved writing it. There's some good stuff in there.
Patouillet TOS: you know those little disposable plastic cups they drink from on TOS, during meetings and such? They very clearly come from a vending machine. So this is a fic that follows the guy whose job it is to replenish that vending machine whenever the Enterprise is in for maintenance. It's set during the episode "Court Martial". I'm really interested in what the random crew members on the ships and stations get up to, so that's what I like writing. The title refers to an inside joke that would take too long to explain.
Belinda Blinked fic: something I started writing at a point where I didn't have any ideas for a trek fic. It's set during book 6 of the Belinda Blinked series (if you don't know it - go check out the "My Dad Wrote A Porno" podcast, you will not regret it) and it's basically Belinda having drinks at the Pentra while she tries to come to terms with Spooner's death. I tried to make it dark and broody cos i thought that would be hilarious.
That's it for my WIPs! I'm tagging @elemental-queen-writes, @section-69 and anyone else who wants to do it!

Lauren returns to cover our round up of the third week of September 2022's Paying Markets!
Lauren returns to cover our round up of the third week of September 2022’s Paying Markets!
Hello to all of our #author and #writer friends! Belinda is still away on her amazing vacation, and Lauren is back to fill in once more! (We almost talked our head editor Stuart into taking over this week, though he tried to pretend he was busy with family, his MBA class, the new layout, and about 20 other excuses. A likely story!) September is inching closer to the month of Halloween and has…

I didn’t plan on not writing during December, but folks was it a busy month! There were meetings, there were deadlines, and after all of that... there was relaxation and family time to be enjoyed. So this is, officially, the first review of 2022! I have chosen one of those decks that I keep rediscovering and falling in love with every time. Like even when I was on my draft of the review I kept saying to myself: honestly wow. And which is it? The Ancestor Spirit Oracle! Created by Jade-Sky, with art by Belinda Morris and the top-notch quality from Blue Angel Publishing, this deck was an amazing discovery of 2021.
“The knowledge of those who came before us can never be lost. It is alive within our hearts, our souls and our DNA”. With this in mind, the deck invites us to “answer the call of the ancestors to connect to their wisdom, discover their truths and accept their support”. Aside from the main ancestral theme, what has captivated me the most is its diversity, not only in the obvious geographical variety with people from different ethnicities, skin colours, and cultures; but also in body sizes, genders, and ages. It feels extremely natural and human, and it is very easy to connect with.
Tumblr media
The cards are superb: colourful, saturated and very expressive. In her artwork, Belinda Morris uses watercolour, gouache, pencil, and digital touches, so they are very detailed and lavish. Most of them are very character focused, and each of the faces is different in features and expressions - and I also love the attention to the clothing. The cards that do not feature characters are very atmospheric, in the sense that you feel transported to the places being shown. It feels open and expansive because it covers many areas of the world, but it also feels interconnected, homely, intimate.
Within the sturdy two-piece box you can also find the guidebook: at 103 pages, features a short introduction and the card meanings. Within the introduction we find a foreword, a way to prepare the cards, a how-to on using the cards, and card layouts. Then, for each card, we find its title, three keywords, its cultural background, Ancestors Speak (which is the message of the card itself), and it ends with a divinatory meaning. The writing is beautiful and respectful, and you can go beyond the cards and actually research the cultures that are represented in each card, so the amount of hours that you can get from this oracle are endless. Although the backs feature fire, I think this is an oracle that you cannot associate with a single element, and if I had to choose, it would be humanity on itself, Spirit.
Aside from being a stunning work of art, a great useful deck, and a lovely collection piece, the Ancestor Spirit Oracle is also a great too to learn about other cultures. It shows the utmost respect and love that went into its creation, which makes it approachable and deep. It is a comforting deck, but one that lays many lessons in our way. Honestly, what a treasure! Without a doubt, this has become not only one of my favourite oracles from Blue Angel, but also one of my favourite decks of all time.

I’m writing a music retrospective--a look back at the music I liked and listened to as a kid/teen, and how this might have influenced me (and my musical tastes) as an adult--and idk, here’s an excerpt if you want to read it:
The year is 1992.  It is the summer, and I am not yet seven years old.  The family record player has died, and my father has just purchased a replacement on the cheap from a nearby garage sale.  With it, a required part of the bargain, is a mish-mash of vinyls and cassette tapes that my brothers and I are rummaging through.  I hone in on one specific tape, emblazoned with the name “Go-Go’s,” simply because I watch Tiny Toon Adventures and there is a character in the show called Gogo Dodo.  I do not know anything about the tape beyond the words I can read on it (some of them just barely, due to the fact that the ink is wearing off)—it comes with no case, nor any trace of an album insert.  It is a decidedly boring-looking tape, opaque light grey in color with plain black text, and the only hint of intrigue comes from what I will later learn is the logo for I.R.S. Records—a tiny, posterized image of a man in a suit and fedora.
I do not know that this album, Beauty and the Beat, will become the first (and for a long time, the only) album I will truly be able to claim as “mine.”  I do not stop to consider the state of my music ownership up until this point—how albums have always been either communally shared between my brothers and I (Disney soundtracks), or else shared solely between my brothers but with the clear understanding that I, the little sister, am allowed to borrow them if I wish (Weird Al).  I do not even know if Beauty and the Beat is the album name or the band name, as I am six years old and do not yet have a solid handle on the visual language of text layout.  I do not know that this is a band comprised entirely of women, and that when I pop the tape into my off-brand Walkman and fire up the opening track that I will be met with punchy drums, chugging guitars, colorful synths, and then the bright, feminine voice of Belinda Carlisle.  I do not know how fast and how hard I will fall in love with this album, will not be able to articulate why; I will only be aware of the countless amount of times I will wear out the batteries in that off-brand Walkman of mine, listening to it over and over and over again in the years to come.  I do not know that this album will effectively become the soundtrack to my childhood, to be taken on bike rides and car trips and just about anywhere else in between that I can manage.  I am six, going on seven; I do not know anything, and certainly wouldn’t understand the significance of it even if I did.

Monochromatic Grayscale Layout – Scrap Booking
Monochromatic Grayscale Layout – Scrap Booking
Check out how elegant this greyscale layout from Belinda is. For her design she left out color and used only gray, black and white for the photo and all the embellishments. And notice all the depth and texture using 3D flowers, stamping, a doily, twine, washi tape and several chipboard elements and words for the title. Visit the My Happy Scrap Place blog for more details. -Heather Looking for…

Austin Maynard Architects completes Terracotta House in Melbourne
Terracotta tiles and reclaimed bricks clad the walls and roofs of this house in an inner suburb of Melbourne, which Austin Maynard Architects designed for a keen gardener.
The owner of Terracotta House approached Austin Maynard Architects to help her create independent homes on a shared lot for herself and her son's family.
Top: the home is comprised of three volumes. Above: it is accessed via an alleyway
Located in the Fitzroy area of Melbourne, the site consisted of a cottage and a garden large enough to accommodate a second property along with a shared library pavilion.
The project involved renovating the existing street-facing cottage where the son's family now live, as well as building a new house for the client with independent access to a laneway at the rear of the site.
Terracotta tiles and recycled brick were used for the facade
In between the two buildings is a shared, productive garden that was a key element of the brief. This space also houses a library building that can be used for guest accommodation.
"Terracotta House is, essentially, a communal-living family 'compound' – akin to a village square, with the owner and her son's family living individually in homes on a shared block," said Austin Maynard Architects.
"As an architecture practice we always aim to maximise space, relate internal spaces to the garden, embrace the street and make the most of laneways," the studio added. "The site that [the client] Belinda purchased offered potential to achieve all of these ideas and more."
Two volumes are joined by a glass corridor
The existing timber-clad Victorian worker's cottage was renovated to retain its original character whilst making it better suited to modern living.
The interior was rearranged to bring the kitchen, lounge and dining areas to the front of the house so they look onto the north-facing garden and the street.
Recycled brick was used for the interiors
Internal walls were removed to improve circulation, with the new layout enhancing the connection with the front garden and verandah. A new kitchen and bathroom were installed, with private areas – including the bedrooms – moved to the rear of the house.
The library pavilion is positioned on the western boundary of the site and looks onto the shared garden. It incorporates a laundry space and toilet, along with a versatile room that is used as a library, guest room, writer's studio, music room and social area.
Terracotta tiling clads an interior wall
The new-build Terracotta House is positioned at the rear of the site and spans the entire width of the plot. It contains a kitchen, dining area, living room, bathroom and a study on the ground floor, with the main bedroom and ensuite upstairs.
The house is comprised of compact and connected volumes, planned to optimise the available outdoor space. The building's orientation and roof form maximise exposure to light and views.
The house's materiality was informed by the owner's love of gardening and the terracotta pots she used to grow plants in at her previous home.
Terracotta tiles applied to the walls and roofs appear to take on different tones throughout the day. Their colour and texture complement the reclaimed brick used for other sections of the external walls and garden planters.
Double doors lead from the library to the garden
Due to a limited budget, utilitarian features such as waterproofing details that would typically be concealed are instead left exposed and are celebrated through an unusual material treatment.
"Rather than hiding the flashings and capping, we accentuated them," the architects explained. "Like the thick outlines of a comic book, each form is captured within lines of black steel of various thicknesses, framing and accentuating the tiles and the recycled brick."
The home has a large garden at the centre
The entrance from the laneway connects to a paved corridor that leads straight through to the garden. This hallways provides a sightline through the building that links it to the street and the community.
The kitchen and dining area are positioned to one side of the corridor, with the living room on the other. Both spaces feature doors that can be opened to connect the interior with the garden.
A passsageway between the volumes leads to the gardens
Terracotta tiles and reclaimed bricks are also used inside the house, where they form part of a pared-back material palette that also includes wooden surfaces and concrete flooring.
Wallpapers designed by indigenous artists for local firm Willie Weston are used in the kitchen and lounge to provide a sophisticated and delicate contrast to the raw, exposed brickwork.
The existing home is located at the rear of the site
Melbourne-based studio Austin Maynard Architects works across residential, retail and commercial projects – adopting a conceptual approach that responds to issues such as liveability, culture, heritage and community connection.
The studio is based out of founder Andrew Maynard's home, which was renovated to create an exceptionally bright space that helps the mental well-being of its occupants.
The practice's previous projects include an extension to a residential terrace in Melbourne featuring a zig-zagging roof and a cylindrical wooden beach house in Victoria, Australia.
Photography is by Derek Swalwell.

From Michael Milford, PhD
Dear Friend,
It’s a hard fact – math is an important life skill, but many people struggle with it. Most of the time, this isn’t their fault – math is quite challenging when it’s taught the way it is nowadays in schools, colleges, courses and textbooks. It’s even harder when you have to go back and relearn math as an adult.
But it doesn’t have to be like this
Imagine being able to really understand even the most challenging math topics. When you understand what you’re doing, math actually becomes enjoyable to do.
Tumblr media
When you understand the key math concepts and ideas, you succeed in math exams because you can adapt and adjust to the problems in the exam being different to what you’ve done in practice.
On the other hand, if you just rote learn what your teacher, lecturer or textbook tells you, you’ll struggle to get a good grade. Memorizing topics may work in geography or history, but it sure doesn’t work in math.
Imagine the satisfaction you’d get from seeing your math abilities improving and your grades getting better and better.
Now you can get great grades and enjoy math because you actually understand it.
I’ve done a lot of the work for you. If you put in the effort to read the math tutorials I have prepared, you’ll be much better prepared to understand mathematical topics. Introducing…
