Supernatural Diseases - Shifters
Note: Please message us if you plan on using these! We just want to coordinate to make sure there’s no doubling up at the same time.
General:
Stuck Shift: For those who can shift at will, a stuck shift is when an individual is stuck between their two forms, which can be very painful and make it hard for the person to function. Generally resolves on its own with time, but there may be some lotions sold on Amity Road that can speed things up.
Balam:
Chronic hairballs, obviously.
Apotheon: The balam suffers from the feeling that they are something divine that was broken into many pieces, and begins to exhibit deific delusions of grandeur and a sense of creeping loss. There isn’t a known cause to this condition, and it can be difficult for a balam to get out of this mindset. However, they can be shaken from it if something forces them to come to grips with their own mortality.
Toxoplasmosis magicii: A magical parasite much like the normal cat parasite, that is completely harmless to the jaguar form and can cause fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes while a balam is in human form. This results in an increased desire to stay in the jaguar form for longer and longer periods. Can be treated with selkie slime.
Bugbear:
Fear Toxicity: Fear begins to be toxic to the bugbear, usually derived from not feeding enough. Over time, the bugbear will grow gradually sicker as they continue to feed, and eventually they will be completely unable to feed on fear, leading to inevitable starvation. In the short term, this causes their illusion powers to not function properly, and in the long term it is deadly. Fortunately, there’s an easy enough cure -- receiving a nightmare from a mara.
Scare-bies: Caused by small, supernatural mites that burrow under the skin. They’re extremely itchy, and after a time, will even cause patches of hair to fall out in a bugbear’s bear form, giving them a mangey appearance. These mites can impair a bugbear’s ability to cast illusions, making it difficult -- even impossible -- for them to feed properly. Over time this can lead to starvation and even death. Fortunately, scare-bies can be treated by special ointment made from mara blood and grounded up yeth hound tentacles. This smothers the mites until they crawl out of the skin. It’s important that every bit of infected skin is covered by the ointment otherwise the infection will spread once more.
Ursus Mane: More unpleasant and awkward than anything else, Ursus Mane is caused by a virus that affects hair growth. In bear form, afflicted bugbears are completely hairless, leaving their skin vulnerable to the elements and anyone who would do them harm. In human form, these unfortunate bugbears are covered in a thick coat of bear hair, resembling the most extreme cases of hypertrichosis. This can be treated with the use of supernatural steroids that gradually return the hair to its rightful form.
Kitsune:
Elemental Shifting: The kitsune will shift elements uncontrollably and without warning. This is particularly problematic not only to the kitsune but to others. i.e. A river kitsune suddenly with thunder powers would not know how to use their powers. The exact cause of the condition is not known, but it’s likely highly magical, and will typically resolve itself over time -- hopefully before something disastrously wrong happens.
Kitsunebi: Part of the mythological association between kitsune and will-o-wisps may stem from this relatively harmless ailment, wherein a kitsune who uses their powers very liberally may have will-o-wisps gravitate to their location. The wisps do not harm the kitsune, but it makes it hard to move inconspicuously. Refraining from using their magic for an extended period will cause the will-o-wisps to drift away over time.
Inari’s Void: The kitsune’s fox-shaped shadow takes on a “mind of its own” and begins attacking people in range, possibly even leading to peoples’ deaths. On some level, the shadow may be acting out the kitsune’s worst impulses. This seems to be brought on randomly in places with large amounts of spiritual or magical energy, especially if the energy is corrupted in some way. The effects linger even once the kitsune leaves the location, but they will dissipate on their own over time.
Lamia:
Medusa Trichoptilosis: The lamia begins to grow snakes on their head. They don't harm the lamia but could prove a nuisance, such as trying to bite a passerby. This condition may cause some sensory overload to the lamia as they’re now able to see, hear, and smell from multiple locations on their head, which can be disorienting. The snake heads must be painfully chopped off, and after the lamia’s next shed, all will be well.
Dysecdysis/Stuck Shed: If a lamia is not well-fed or exposes themselves to poor environmental conditions, they may have a hard time shedding their skin. This can cause the old skin to painfully adhere to the new one underneath, which looks pretty awful and is very uncomfortable for the lamia. Over time this corrects itself, but sometimes the new skin becomes somewhat damaged in the process.
Clogged Venom Glands: If a lamia doesn’t use their venom for too long, it may harden and clog inside of the gland. This is painful, and causes swelling in the face and neck. While the glands are swollen they can’t use their venom, and they may need some magical assistance to gradually free the glands.
Selkie:
Sensory Inversus: Caused by a parasite, Sensory Inversus makes the senses of the selkie become acute above ground, and dulled underwater. This results in increased light sensitivity, whiskers growing in human form, and overly sensitive hearing in human form. Additionally, this makes it dangerous for the selkie to be in seal form, because those senses are needed underwater. Specific potions made of mermaid fins can treat it.
The Skin Crawls: Selkies start experiencing an intense desire to wear someone else’s skin, usually not another selkie’s. It starts as a subconscious off-hand thought, then slowly grows over time until it's all encompassing. The feeling will go as soon as the selkie puts on someone else’s skin (...After carefully peeling it off their victim who will likely die). The other treatment would be using the skin from a well-formed mermaid.
“Donkeyskin”: Caused by a fungal infection that can get into the pelt if not cared for properly, making it fit weird, and causing the limbs to not all transform properly. This can feel strange in the water, and makes the selkie look a little like a mutant seal monster. While not necessarily painful, it is irritating and a little itchy when interacting with the selkie goo. The infection can be treated by soaking the skin in a bath made from warm water and selkie mucus for 15-24 hours. Should it be left untreated, the damage to the skin will be left irreversible.
Siren:
Witherwings: Sirens must be particularly careful about selecting their prey, otherwise they may face consequences. Many normal humans and other supernatural individuals can be carriers for Witherwings, which has no presenting symptoms in non-siren individuals. However, once a siren has consumed an individual with the virus, they will experience fever, itching, and discover that their feathers will begin to fall out. If not treated soon enough, a siren can permanently lose their feathers. Treatment for Witherwings include topical oils with bits of crushed phoenix feather.
Omnitone: A strange phenomena can occur where sirens lose the ability to control their mesmerizing musical abilities. Instead of being able to actively turn on their powers, sirens will find they are enthralling people with their speaking voice and those under their power are prone to dangerous levels of obsession. Drinking lemon tea mixed with eintykára honey is the common practice of getting rid of this affliction.
Mushmouth: (Teeth horror tw) Particularly messy eaters in the siren community should be aware of Mushmouth, a very annoying but minor disease of the mouth. Similar to cavities, too much accumulated iron will cause siren teeth to begin to rot and even fall out. A diet of only fae (as they don’t have iron blood) can allow them to avoid this condition. Mushmouth is easily avoided by regular flossing, brushing of teeth, and general dental hygiene. Once afflicted, sirens must refrain from eating flesh and rinse nightly with a brine made with mermaid scales.
Werewolf:
WereFleas: While werewolves may not be prone to dog fleas (the jury is out on that one) they do have their own flea species to worry about. If this mutant kind of flea bites a werewolf, an uncontrollable itch occurs. The fleas will live in the fur (or hair) of an individual and reproduce there, worsening the problem. If left untreated, this causes numbness in the areas of the bites. Strangely enough, this can be treated with regular dog/flea removal.
Úlfhéðnar: A rare disease stemming from wolfsbane consumption, the werewolf begins to feel the wolf within overshadowing their humanity, often getting the feeling that their human shape is ‘false’ or some fake skin they are ‘wearing.’ Their senses sharpen beyond the werewolf norm but animalistic behaviors, sometimes violent ones, begin to increasingly creep into their human life, and the onset can be quite rapid. This can go all the way to losing the capacity to understand human language, and walking on all fours. One of the better treatments for this is to proactively re-engage with human life, almost pushing away the wolf side as much as possible. This can be dangerous if the violent behaviors are already an issue, and may result in the werewolf losing touch with their wolf side around the full moon.
Osteolupinus: (Chronic illness tw) Wolves get afflicted with a joint and bone disorder which makes turning more painful than usual, and can result in imperfect transformations -- for example, the skin and musculature changing but not the bones, or vice versa. Not only is this painful, but it can inhibit movement, and can be an issue in either direction of the transformation. Can be treated by eating the bones of a bonedoggle, zombie, or banaspati.

False God AU
based on my own story and the characters in it, Tales From The American Slaughterhouses (or: Wake Me Up When September Ends)
The UK government has decided that human soldiers are no long exceeding their expectations, so when the US comes to them with a proposition, they accept. A special chemical has been created called “miasma”. When infused with human blood, it will mutate that human into a monstrous creature that has never been seen before. Permanently.
These mutants are called “False Gods” and must wear thick metal collars (Restrainers) at all time, which keep them in their dormant forms and pump human hormones into their brains to stop them from being completely feral. However, when the collar is removed, they will transform into their godly bodies and lose their humanity. Hopefully, this will only ever happen in war towards enemies.
They’re housed in old slaughterhouses on the edge of England--or so everyone thinks. But below the ocean lays the underwater city, No-Man’s Land, housed in domes of glass and lit up brightly in the depths. Here, the False Gods live normal lives, or as normal as lives mutants can live. And they all go about their days with the same thing in mind: they will never see the surface ever again, unless it’s to kill.
Now, let’s meet our Gods.
Aragon- The Church Lamb
Description: Out of most False Gods, Aragon appears one of the most human. The only real outlandish feature about her is her pitch black ram head with large ears and horns that curl around her head. Her eyes glow gold in the darkness. She’s also usually seen wearing suits with a cross necklace that she never seems to take off. She likes to dress snappily.
Procedure: Aragon was a willing test subject who signed up to be mutated. Her procedure consisted of a dead ram’s head being sewn onto her own head and then left in stasis for three days so it can fuse to her skull after the miasma was given. She had to breathe through a tube for those three tubes, but her procedure was one of the more painless ones.
Anne- The Leviathan
Description: Anne always appears in her full God form because of experimentation gone wrong, but she’s very stable with her human mind. She’s a very large sea dragon, with varying shades of green scales and bioluminescent stripes all along her legs, tail, neck, and wings.
Procedure: After being injected with lizard’s blood and miasma, Anne was kept in a salt water pool for a week, where she grew all her new appendages and her skin rotted off. However, she was unable to be given a Restrainer because she was far too mutated, so, instead, she was pumped full of human hormones.
Jane- The Winter Owl
Description: Jane is a tall, anthropomorphic snowy owl with pure white feathers and black streaks. Her wings are usable and can also double as hands (think Ritos from LoZ). She also wears a dark grey bow tie.
Procedure: Like the medieval torture method, Jane was tarred and feathered, then injected with miasma and snowy owl blood.
Cleves- The Brazen Bull
Description: Cleves is very much like a minotaur, with dark brown fur and hock-jointed legs with hooves and a tail and everything. The only catch is that she can light her entire body on fire. The tufts of fur on the end of her tail are always burning, even when she sleeps. Her horns also glow like lava and smoke often comes from her mouth and nostrils when worked up.
Procedure: Cleves was injected with bovine blood and miasma before placed into a heated room, where she would inhale smoke for several hours through an oxygen mask.
Kitty- The Chimera
Description: Kitty sure is a chimera alright. The bottom half of a snake and the torso and head of a human, wings of a bat, horns of a deer, thick paws of a lion. Her scales are pink with black diamonds and cover her entire body except her face and stomach, so she doesn’t wear any clothing.
Procedure: You would think her transformation process would be painful, but it actually wasn’t. She was put under while her new limbs were sewn on and kept asleep until they fused with her body fully. Only a little bit of soreness once she woke up, but fine nonetheless, unlike many others.
Cathy- The Organ Donor
Description: Cathy also looks very human, much like Aragon. You may even think she was normal if it weren’t for her second pair of arms. In reality, Cathy can mutate her body into very horrific shapes, but she prefers to stay as normal as possible. She can feel no real pain and gets her name from the way she can duplicate her organs, making her a very valuable False God.
Procedure: Cathy was one of the first False Gods, and therefore her procedure wasn’t as in depth as some of the others. She was simply injected with miasma and then had to wait for the effects, which was when her ability to duplicate organs appeared.
Bessie- The Blue-Eyed Blackbird
Description: Bessie, as her name may suggest, is a bird creature, sort of like Jane, but slightly more human. She’s covered in black crow feather from head-to-toe, except on her stomach and face. She had hock-jointed bird legs, large wings, and big feathery ears that stick out from the sides of her head. However, she is always wearing a white plague doctor mask and cloak because she hates her appearance. She also hates herself in general and doesn’t talk very often. Also, birds sometimes grow out from her right eye.
Procedure: Bessie was a victim of suicide and her corpse was brought into No-Man’s Land and brought back to life (people get paid to bring in bodies for testing). She was injected with miasma and crow’s blood, then left to transform, which was painful, especially for her wings.
Maria- The Birch
Description: Maria appears as a humanoid tree creature. She has four legs instead of two and thick, branch-like arms with sharp points for fingers. Moss and shrubs grow all over her body, which is made of bark instead of skin.
Procedure: Maria was injected with miasma and tree sap, then left to soak in sunlight as she transformed.
Maggie- The Bog
Description: Maggie is a tall, alien-like swamp creature with aquamarine scales and webbed fins running down her spine, tail, and extending from her elbows and ankles. She also has a finned ruff at the sides of her head.
Procedure: Maggie’s procedure was similar to Anne’s, injected with miasma and reptilian blood, but she was bathed in a vat of hot mud until she transformed.
Joan- The Angel of Death
Description: Joan is a very strange case, in which her process sort of got messed up. She has giant grey moth wings with red spots like eyes on them, hock-jointed fuzzy legs, silk glands in her wrists, and antenna. Think Mothman, basically. But then, she has strange floppy ears made of fuzzy silver fur (that fades into light blue at the tips). Her blonde hair has turned silver at the roots as well. She also has a glowing halo, tiny devil horns, and a long, thin tail with a light blue tip. Nobody really knows what she was supposed to be. Also she wears overalls.
Procedure: Joan is the newest addition to No-Man’s Land when she went into the abandoned slaughterhouse facility to show off to her “friends.” Of course, she was captured and tested on against her will, where she was injected with miasma, moth blood, and some other type of blood. Within seconds, silk began to pour out from her wrists and consume her, trapping her in a cocoon, where her wings grew in painfully, legs snapped into a new position, spine elongated into a tail, and organs began to rearrange themselves. It was quite a traumatizing experience, especially in such a tight space.

Beowaulf’s Guide To The Avian Race
Avems
Description: Feathered wings, crest feathers, and tail feathers of varying colors depending on the bird they take after; tufts of feathers on ears; talons on their hands and feet; two eyelids
Abilities: Heightened sight; generally strong fighters and fliers; powerful talons
Classification: Male- Rooster/cockerel; Females- Pullet/hen (but only if she has had children); Non-binary folk- Ave; Children- Chick
Goddess: Abiel
Facts:
Avems are the most common species of avians, making up around almost half of the population. Their genes are very dominant, and any children between an Avem and a different avian tend to have feathered wings.
The certain bird an avian has the wings of is not based on their parents (example: a mallard duck and a cuckoo bird could have a scarlet macaw child). It’s very rare that a child actually takes the wings of their parents.
The rarest kind of wings an Avem can have are as followed: caladrius, roc, phoenix, lightning bird, thunderbird, Quetzalcoatlus, pterodactyl, pteranodon, and any extinct bird species. Quetzalcoatlus, pterodactyl, and pteranodon are actually quite controversial in the avian community, as some Avems don’t see them as one of them and rather Hydras, while others do consider them Avems, despite lacking any feathers.
There used to be a class system among Avem communities, where the prettiest wingers would be treated better than those with more muted colors. Brown was specifically a hated color, despite a good chunk of Avems having brown somewhere in their wings. This class system has since been torn down over the years, but some feathers still consider those with prettier, brighter colors better than others.
Avems are less likely to tap into their instincts, unlike the other species of avians. They retain their humanity much better.
The bird each Avems takes after is highly worshipped between those with those kinds of wings.
No Avem eats any kind of poultry, even those with the wings of a bird of prey. The consumption of eggs usually varies from Avem to Avem.
Nesting season is a certain time of the year where Avems, specifically expecting or generally maternal hens, become ten times more anxious and aware of their surroundings. Nobody really knows why it happens, but it causes them to become supremely protective over their flock and sometimes even aggressive. Mother hens tend to be more affected by this season.
Mother hens do not sit on their chicks, although jokes are made about this anyway. Instead, they fold/hood their wings in front of themselves so their chicks will be covered at their sides. This is for protection, warmth, and comfort.
Avems are big on learning how to fly as soon as possible, as they worship the sky more than the other species of avians. Most chicks learn to fly before the age of ten.
Avems are intensely community based, everyone takes care of each other in a very genuine way, which is why flocks are a thing in the first place.
Even if you can’t fly with them, the appearance of wings is important. Grounded Avems will put extra care into making them clean/pretty to compensate for lack of flight. The Avem community is very caring towards grounded feathers and all usually pitch in to help out whenever they can.
However, the Flightless are seen as disgraces and are usually thrown out of flocks. The lack of an ability to fly and no wings is too much for them.
Baby Avems are born with fluffy down on their wings, and then grow in their flight and adult feathers as they get older.
They are praised for their vocal talents.
Birds of prey have the strongest talons, the most powerful being a harpy eagle Avem. They can grip something so tightly that they can crush certain bones.
Gifting feathers is a common form of courting.
They will also do mating dances to attract a partner. They always make sure to have their wings clean, pristine, and very shiny for the event. Two courting Avems (or one Avem and a different species) will also do a special sky dance to declare their relationship.
A large chunk of Avem culture in general puts a LOT of importance on the ability to fly. The common feather belief is that they were the original and purest avians, and that all the other species flew too low and were changed in some way (Hydras became too infatuated with the wealth and jewels in the earth, making them greedy and cunning; Cimexs flew too low and grew too attached to nature; Vespers flew too long under the moon and became addled by them; Flightless’ simply flew too little and lost their gift of wings completely), while Avems retained their true colors and flying prowess.
Hydras
Description: Scaled wings with vary colors and patterns; webbed frills behind their ears and protruding out of their skull; horns; claws on their hands and feet; scales stretching up their back and on their palms; pointed ears; two eyelids
Abilities: Heightened sense of smell; extended barbs from wingtips; firebreath or frostbreath
Classification: Male- Drake; Female- Dragoness; Non-binary folk- Draco; Children- Wyrm
Goddess: Haniel
Facts:
The color of their wings do not depend on parents, like all other avians.
Horns vary from Hydra to Hydra.
Hydras are the most successful species in preserving their customs and culture. It’s very well documented and taught to wyrms.
Hydras have a love for tapestries, weavings, and other forms of art. They are especially fond of entertainers and theater.
They are also the most dedicated to fashion out of all the species.
The Hydra attitude is very much “protect your own”, which covers immediate neighbors. This leads to Hydras usually being hyper-aware of everyone around them, for better or for worse.
Gift giving is a pretty big part of the Hydra community. Genuinely not accepting a gift is completely unheard of, no matter how unwanted the gift is or any personal feelings between the gift-giver and the recipient.
Pawning your trash off on another avian under the guise of a gift is extremely trashy and rude, and a good way to sink your reputation.
Mother dragons tend to be the most protective out of all species, with mother hens coming in close second. Like hens, they will hood their wyrms with their wings and will flare their frills when intimidated. They are also very prone to attacking if they feel that their young are being threatened and don’t let up until the enemy is dead or far away.
When a Hydra would die, the body would be wrapped up in fine silk and coated in gemstones, favorite personal belongings, and dead prey. They do not bury their dead, but instead go to a very special ceremony site and give the body up on a flat stone as an offering to the gods, signifying that “hey, they’re dead, they’re for you now” and send up their spirits to the afterlife. The prey is to attract the spirits and gods and bring attention. Lavish memorial parties would then be thrown at sunset and can last hours into the early morning.
As the stereotype suggests, scales are very fond of treasure, but they tend to be very picky. Gold and copper are seen as cheap. Silver and quartz are highly valued. Colorful jewels like amethyst, sapphire, emerald, and ruby are commonly used in jewelry.
That’s another thing-- they LOVE jewelry. Horn bands are popular because they don’t get in the way when flying. Wing bands are also sometimes worn, but they can be heavy and make flying difficult. Most Hydras would rather use gemstone laces on their wings.
Getting tattoos and gemstones embedded in wings is quite common, although painful at first. Some scales even dye/bleach their wings, but the result can cause the scales to burn and fall off over time.
The barbs in their wingtips are made of a compound mixed from shedded scales and bone. These barbs are full of blood and marrow and break easily. They take a few days to grow back if broken off.
Hydras will gift a scale as a courting method. They will also actually put the scale of their mate underneath their tongue to let it dissolve in their mouth.
No matter where a child comes from, or even the species, all Hydras watch out for younger avians and make sure they stay safe and protected. Even the Flightless and hybrids.
Cimexes
Description: Insect wings of varying shape, sizes, and color depending on bug type; four arms; antennae; chitin along the back and on palms, but fuzz if the Cimex is a moth; short, curved claws; retractable mandibles in mouths; two eyelids
Abilities: Moth and butterfly Cimexs can spin silk from their wrists; bee, hornet, wasp, and yellowjacket Cimexs can extend stingers from their wrists to inject a nerve toxin into enemies; other Cimexs can deliver painful, itching bites like an ant
Classification: Male- Beckett; Female- Monarch; Non-binary folk- Insecta; Child- Nymphs
Goddess: Cybiel
Facts:
Their blood varies from blue, green, or yellow, but never red. This also means tongues, scabs/wounds, blushes, and insides are either blue, green, or yellow.
Cimexes are the most diverse race when it comes to appearance because of all the varying wing shapes.
The mandibles in their mouth are retractable. They grow from their bottom jaw, behind their teeth, and fold into little glands at the bottom of their mouths when not in use. These mandibles are usually quite spiky and smooth and can dig all the way down to bone.
Mandible bites itch like an ant bite because they secrete an acidic venom into the skin when in contact with it.
Mandibles are also barbed, so they do just as much damage going out as they do going in.
Moth and butterfly Cimexes are born without wings, but have two colorful bumps on their backs. When they become of age, they spin cocoons and stay inside them for seven days. During this process, their organs liquidate themselves and rearrange into a new, stronger system. Because of this, it is dangerous to disturb a cocoon during metamorphosis because it could harm the Cimex inside.
Several butterflies and moths make a living by spinning silk and making things out of it to sell.
Cimex wings are the easiest to damage, but heal within hours.
They are the only avians that can hover (minus moths and butterflies).
Silk glands are located right below the hand on the wrist. They’re thin slices that sort of look like paper cuts.
Butterflies and moths need to spin silk at least once a day to keep their glands from getting clogged up. This could lead to clumping in the silk passage, swelling of the wrists, tenderness, and a lot of pain and discomfort when moving the hands.
Their antennae predict the weather and sense vibrations in the air.
They are able to twist their wings during flight. By doing so, they can preserve and even control the quantity of lift they generate.
Dragonfly Cimexes have selective attention and are able to lock onto something and eliminate everything else around that one thing.
Most wings are waterproof.
Moth and butterfly Cimexs make these bracelets called Infinity Bands with their silk. These bracelets symbolize eternal love between two mates and they’re usually made with beads and small gemstones. They’re like wedding rings of sorts, but there’s also platonic Infinity Bands.
Vespertilios
Description: Bat wings of varying size and color; large bat ears; fangs; opposable fingers on wings called dewclaws; retractable talons in their feet and hands; prehensile tongues; two eyelids
Abilities: Night vision; echolocation; blood and raw meat consumption without getting sick
Classification: Male- Sire; Female- Vixen; Non-binary folk- Fox; Child- Pup
Goddess: Valtiel
Facts:
Upon drinking a creature's blood, a Vesper’s special stomach acid will kill the bacteria, making it safe to digest. The kidney will then turn the blood into a plasma, which is excreted out of the cloaca. Plasma appears as a thick black liquid.
Bloody Marys have actual blood in them. They’re made specifically for Vespers to drink. This, however, does not stop other avians from thinking they can drink it. They usually get sick as a result, as they cannot urinate out the blood plasma like Vespers can.
Pups are born with tiny fangs that grow longer as they get older.
Most pups can’t be breastfed because they would bite their mother’s breast and drink her blood.
Vesper wings are made up entirely of skin with a thin layer of fuzz on certain Vespers. Their bones, membranes, and blood vessels are visible. Because of this, they are the only avian race capable of getting sunburned on their wings.
Bat flies are a problem for Vespers. The bugs like to cling to their wings in swarms and drink their blood. It’s kinda gross to see and it’s very painful for the poor Vesper infested with them.
Vespers enjoy hanging upside down.
Vespers feel most secure when they’re swaddled by things. It’s an instinct that they never grow out of, so it’s not just a pup trait.
They also like to suck on things. Fingers or their own dewclaws are a common thing they will suck on.
There are entire shops dedicated to selling the best bugs for Vespers to eat. They are, of course, Vesper-owned businesses because no other race would want to have such a profession.
Deaf Vespers can still use echolocation and are actually better at it than hearing Vespers because they can focus more intently on the vibrations.
Despite bats being the number one carrier of rabies, Vespers are completely immune to the disease. This, however, does not stop people from saying otherwise and still claiming they will infect others.
Like butterfly and moth Cimexs, dust and pollen tends to stick to the wings of Vespers.
Vespers have more flexibility and control over their wings compared to other avians, letting them turn more smoothly.
Vespers enjoy eating fruits, nectars, and bugs. Bugs are their favorite food. Many Cimexs don’t like them because of this.
Several Vespers wear sunglasses or simply keep their eyes closed when outside because of how sensitive they are to bright lights.
They will “wing” their ears around their face to keep themselves cool.
Vespers will catch the most colorful butterfly in the area and give the wings to their mate as a courting technique, then the two will eat the body together, since butterflies symbolize love in their culture. They may also drink each other’s blood as a marking of sorts.
Vespers have long, thick talons on their feet for hanging upside down. These talons are usually around six to seven inches in size, one and a half inches in width, and are hooked, sort of like a raptor’s claws. The curves of these claws will catch on surfaces, like bars, so they can hang. The muscles in their legs and feet bunch up to help lock themselves in place so their claws won’t instantly rip out from their body weight.
The talons are usually sheathed in the feet and can be retracted outwards when needed. When out, a leather avian becomes digitigrade and walks on their toes. It’s sort of like walking on giant toenails.
When it’s cold, Vesper ears and wings are more susceptible to frostbite because the skin tends to be thinner than the skin on a regular avian’s.
Vespers are the most discriminated pureblooded avian race. Several avians don’t like them because of their ability to drink blood and so they see them as demons.
The Flightless
Description: Tightly curled wingbuds extending from their shoulder blades, which can unfurl outwards
Abilities: N/A
Classification: N/A
Goddess: N/A
Facts:
Wingbuds are tightly curled membranes that extend from the shoulder blades, which vary in size from Flightless to Flightless, but they’re usually the size of a regular book. However, they can unfurl and form a vague wing-like shape.
Sometimes hints of color can be seen under the skin if the complexion is light enough.
They molt every two months, which consists of the top layer of skin on their back peeling off.
Flightless aren’t just wingless avians, but also avians who have one wing, a lame wing, or wings that don’t work at all. “Purebred” Flightless are the ones with the wingbuds, while “half-bloods” are the others. Purebreds do not like half-bloods because “at least they have wings.”
Most Flightless hate when people touch or try to touch their wingbuds, which is quite common, especially in children. The flesh on the wingbuds are extremely sensitive and the sensation of it being touched is like running your nails over the skin of a body part that fell asleep.
Forcefully unfurling a Flightless’ wingbuds is painful and extremely uncomfortable.
Skin infections are common with the Flightless because of how tender the skin on their back is. It isn’t unnatural to see one with long slices and cuts marring their back from the flesh breaking open.
“No-Wings”, “Bareback”, “LameWings”, and “Wingless” are slurs to the Flightless. They don’t even like being called “the Flightless”, they would prefer to actually be called “Smooth Skins” because of their smooth backs. Of course, nobody ever respects these wishes.
They have the highest depression and suicide rate out of all avian species.
Hybrids
Description: Appearances vary depending on parents
Abilities: Abilities vary depending on parents
Classification: N/A
Goddess: Depends on crossbreed
Facts:
Hybrids are as rare Flightless and are about as discriminated against as they are, too, if not more.
Hybrids happen when the genes of two different species mutate into each other instead of one dominating the other, so the resulting child will be a mix of both parents.
Most of them don’t even survive past childhood. They either die because their body is unstable or are killed because they’re viewed as a freak of nature by all species. They’re also very sickly and susceptible to illnesses.
If crossed with a Cimex, a hybrid’s blood will be a different color. Yellow bug blood + normal avian blood = orange blood; Blue bug blood + normal avian blood = purple blood; Green bug blood + normal avian blood = A brown-grey blood.
Normal hybrid blood is usually a darker red than normal blood, almost black when it first comes out.
Avems used to kill hybrids to keep the genes from spreading. This has since been outlawed--or is at least done behind closed doors so nobody will ever know.
A lot of Vesper hybrids usually die from drinking blood because they are unable to urinate out the plasma (because they didn’t get that ability), so the bacteria kills them.
Several butterfly/moth Cimexes die during metamorphosis because their already-grown-in pair of wings don’t stop moving and rip the cocoon open. The result is very messy, as their body will essentially be liquidated.
If they do live, the strain of giant butterfly/moth wings have a chance of ripping their back open.
Some hybrids are born with more than one pair of wings, causing difficulties and back problems as their life progresses.
Hybrids used to be enslaved and used for show. Several nobles would keep hybrids as “pets” of sorts and would show them off at parties.
Hybrids are incredibly infertile and cannot reproduce, as the resulting child would be a tribrid.
Medical issues run rampant in hybrids, such as muscle deterioration, breathing issues, and brittle bones. As stated before, they are also very sickly and get ill very easily. As a result, almost all of them are frail and scrawny.
Some hybrids can’t even fly because of how weak their bodies are. They just aren’t strong enough to get off the ground, so their wings will sometimes just drag behind them.
Hybrids have a hard time molting because of conflicting pelt types. Assistance is most likely needed, but most avians usually don’t want to go near hybrids.
Hybrids aren’t wanted by pureblooded avians OR the Flightless. The purebloods see them as screw ups and monsters and freaks, while the Flightless see them as glorified show pets and consider them lucky to even have wings. As a result, many hybrids spend their lives alone and are discriminated against.

DabiHawks Week 1 - (Touch) Sunlight
Read on AO3
                                           Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight, oh
                                                  But it is sunlight
It’s quiet, in the early hours of morning, and Dabi and Hawks are up before the sun.
“I can’t tell if you like them touched or not.” Dabi mutters, fingers beginning to comb through feathers. Hawks makes a small hissing noise as a few snagged up feathers are brushed aside.
“It depends,” Hawks says, rolling his shoulders back with a crack. “They’re…sensitive. I feel through them, even the grown ones that don’t have nerve endings. Ask me how having wings feels, to control feathers and, shit, I don’t know dude, they’re my limbs and parts of me. Might as well ask me how it feels to have arms and fingers.”
Dabi snorts. “You’d think you’d take better care of them, then.”
Hawks’s wings are a mess, tangled up and lacking their usual shine from a few days of flying through storms and harsh winds with no breaks for wing care.
“Yeah, when in the last 48 hours of saving your ass from heroes did I have the time to sit down and fucking preen?” There’s little venom in Hawks’s words these days, even if he loads his words with tease and mocking. “It’s fine, I’ll just do it after I shower. I need to…re-oil them.”
Dabi’s gaze travels down the expanse of Hawk’s nude body, down to where a gland right at the end of his spine is. It isn’t obtrusive on his body – barely darker than the rest of his skin, but Dabi’s long figured out that’s it’s such an unmistakably avian feature that Hawks fears discussing it. It’s weird that Hawks can be shy about anything, with his usual personality and, Dabi’s reluctant to admit this, near divine good looks, but the waxy oil-leaking gland seems to be one of those things.
Far be it from Dabi to not understand how someone can be insecure about their body. How can he when he still cracks and bleeds and burns and will never stop until the flames he struggles to hold in consume him? But Hawks’s uneasiness with his mutations, the bird parts of him that he covers with that costume of his (slightly taloned arched feet, the membranous eyelids he hides under a visor, his uropygial gland) always causes Dabi more comfort than the discomfort the blond man expects.
Maybe it is… cruel of Dabi, but those vulnerabilities make him far more human than the beautiful, glowing man who soars above the rest of the rabble, or smiles brightly at him up at him from magazine covers or Instagram posts.
That man isn’t real – but the young boy who is now trembling and sighing as Dabi works his fingers through remiges and primaries, reaching his own fingers deep down to where he can feel filoplumes and his softest down feathers, is. He grips them, none too gently, and Hawks stiffens against him, a gasp leaving his mouth. Dabi wonders if it hurts, this deep down and close to skin.
They’re so close to each other that Dabi can hear the quick thrum of Hawks’s heart, always loud and fast. Dabi wonders who and what it beats for constantly; is it him? Is it out of fear? Does he realize how close he let him get, how Dabi could just… burn them all at any time, and take those wings with him? Or does he want that, his little dove, so eager to be martyred?
“Does it hurt?” Dabi asks, fingers returning to warmly tracing the skin between the feathers.
“It’s okay,” Hawks says, assuring despite not answering him if it does or not. “I like it when you touch them. I want you to; everyone else feels like they just can, you…ask.”
It’s because, unlike those grubby-handed fans of Hawks that are so eager to keep taking pieces of their giving savior, Dabi still doesn’t think he deserves to touch Hawks. Not like this. Not when he can so easily burn him and yet feels burned by him. He wonders why Hawks doesn’t recoil from him, doesn’t realize the abomination he’s let in his bed, beside him, inside him. He’s always been one, even when he was whole and unburnt, a monster forsaken by its equally monstrous creator and the world he was cast out into.
Hawks turns partially, hand landing on Dabi’s cheek. His fingers trace the seams of his scars, tenderly, and he pulls Dabi into a gentle kiss.
One pair of lips is soft, painstakingly moisturized to combat the chap from high winds and chills. The other is half scars and chap, but still they press together, delighting in the contrasts. They kiss until sleep takes them again.
When Dabi opens his eyes again, he sees that the sun is up, its’ rays streaming into the room through cracks in the blinds. They illuminate his lover, bathe his body in golden glow.
Hawks wears sunlight like a halo, feathers dripping with wax, and Dabi’s never touched a fire as bright.

The Ziz- Waterbird Lore
(I’d like to preface this by saying if I’ve missed anything or you want something clarified, feel free to send in an ask! Also, if you like the Ziz and the Waterbirds and would like to make one, feel free! [and tag me cause I’d love to see])
There are four varieties of Ziz, the Waterbirds, Raptors, Songbirds and Pygmies. They all live near the same peninsula, with Waterbirds found wheeling about the air or swimming though the water near the cliffs, beaches and small islands dotting the outer edges of the peninsula that they inhabit. There they create homes in caves on the cliffs or stone huts on the beaches and islands. The climate they live in is generally warm to mild year round due to its low elevation, the climate is much like the Songbird’s forest, though the cool ocean breeze keeps it from being as warm. Waterbirds form very small and tight knit communities which are usually family based but are generally aloof to other ziz, including other Waterbirds, and humans. Because of their size and strength compared to other Ziz, Waterbirds are also sometimes called ‘Giants’.
Waterbirds, as mentioned, are grouped generally in very small, tight knit, familial communities that keep to themselves. There may be multiple groups together, even at sea, but many of them won’t interact without cause. They are not territorial like Raptors, so there’s generally no need for defense but neither are they as communal as the Songbirds. Of course, in times of need Waterbirds may flock together, specially out at sea to hunt and stay safe in larger groups. The leader of each flock is usually the oldest, looked up to for wisdom or experience, though an act of bravery may place a younger member as the lead instead. The easiest way to tell flocks apart without knowing their songs is how they decorate their clothing and hair.
Coming in at the second least human looking, Waterbirds have many physical traits that set them apart from Ziz or humans. They’re the largest of the Ziz, ranging from around 5’-6’. All Ziz have four toes, with the fourth toe actually more like a thumb it’s able to be placed forward, against the other three, or separate to wrap around a branch for steady walking though Waterbirds also have webbing between their toes, except the “thumb” to help them when they dive or swim through the ocean. Even their hands have webbing up to the first knuckle. Their legs are a bit longer proportionally to keep their large wings from dragging on the ground.
Water birds also have a sort of “pouch” under their chin, much like a pelican, for carrying fresh water on long distance flights or when drinking water might be scarce. A muscle keeps the pouch taunt if it is empty and, when it is full, contracts to allow them to swallow the water. An empty pouch of a young Waterbird often looks indistinguishable from a human chin, while an elder’s pouch may sag from years of use. To accommodate the pouch, the Waterbird’s jaw protrudes from their face more so than a human or any other Ziz.
Unlike most other Ziz, Water birds do not have great night vision and so are not very active in the dark, but while their eyes have two iris’ like all Ziz, they also have a clear eye lid to help protect their eyes in the water. Oddly, they are  the only Ziz to have feathers other than on their wings or heads. Downy feathers covering their chests to help keep their core temperature up while they are in cooler waters. Oil glands cover their wing and chest feathers to make them water proof.
Long, large and narrow wings attach below the shoulders to a second set of “shoulder blades”. The Waterbirds have the largest wings of all Ziz, even in proportion to their body. They are noisy fliers and clumsy at ground take-off, but great at soaring long distances or close over the water surface. Hollow bones allow for flight, but make them rather weak physically (though they can attack and defend with their strong magic). Waterbirds are physically the strongest Ziz, but still only about as strong as a human. Waterbird wings come in a variety of patterns of white, brown, black, and an iridescent greenish or blueish black. Neither colors nor patterns are hereditary. Some Waterbirds, due to diet, may have their feathers dyed, usually green, blue or pink. The dye from their diet may, or may not, also affect their hair.
Unsurprisingly, due to their close proximity to the ocean, the Waterbird’s diet consists mostly of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and just about any other seafood they can get their somewhat webbed hands on, as well as greens like kelp and seaweeds. While they need help opening the stronger shells of mollusks, like clams, their strong jaws can easily rip through the shells of crustaceans. Those who live with a close supply may also supplement their diet with greens from the land, though since their wings are best for soaring and diving, they generally do not hunt land animals. They may also eat fruit, grains and red meat, but fish are especially important to create the waterproofing oil that coats their feathers.
As with all Ziz, communication up close is done with the Ziz language which is full of chirping, clicking, whistles and other sounds. For long distance calls, instead of the screeching of Raptors or lilting songs of Songbirds, Waterbirds have long, crooning calls. They’re almost eerie to hear echoing across the ocean, especially at night. While not as melodic as a Songbird’s songs, their call is pretty in its own right, varying in length, complication and length of notes. Like with Songbirds and Raptors, each flock will have its own distinctive calls.
Magic, for Waterbirds, comes as naturally as is does for Songbirds. However, while Songbirds use it to live in harmony with the trees of their forest, and Raptors use it to enhance their skills, Waterbirds use magic to still waters, find food, build nests and all in all, survive. They do, of course, have offensive and defensive spells as well, just like any other Ziz species.
Courtship and mating is done year round, usually by the interested party presenting unique shells. These shells may be presented as is or may be made into jewelry and presented. It usually takes Waterbirds a while to warm up to each other due to how aloof they are. Since flocks are mostly familial, unions are almost always between Waterbirds of different flocks, creating an extra barrier between courtship, Though, it is easier to approach if a Waterbird in interested in another since they’re not a territorial species.
Waterbirds’ mating is usually for life, with the Ziz which was wooed leaving their flock. That isn’t to say they will never see their family again or never visit, but they are considered to have changed flocks. Waterbirds may also mate with Raptors who will then usually live with the Waterbirds as they can’t be far from their source of fish. There have been cases where living close to a source of freshwater fish have allowed Waterbirds to live happily with Raptors away from the ocean. Children born of a mixed species couple will be one or the other. This is determined by gender. The child will generally be the same species of the parent with the same gender, however there are a few exceptions.
Children are cared for until they are strong enough to hunt for themselves, but since flocks, especially familial flocks are so tight knit, Waterbirds stay until they are wooed away. If the flock has to travel, children are either carried on the backs of the strongest fliers or, if they are too young to hold on, slings are made and they are carried close to the Waterbird’s downy chest. Parents and children from a close bond until the child gains independence, but the bond never fully goes away.
Waterbird’s clothing is made from woven leaf fibers, much like a songbird, but it will not always be from land plants and may in fact be from kelp or seaweed. Their clothing and hair will be decorated with seashells or maybe even shells of claws from animals like crabs or lobsters. They don’t mark themselves with paints like Raptors do, but as decorations are handed down through families and certain shells are only attainable in certain places, each flock creates a unique and distinctive way of decorating clothing and hair.
