May I request buffy for the dashboard osmosis if you haven't seen it? Or if you have then steven universe
i'll do buffy
isabel, i like and respect you. but i hear about buffy a lot on tvtropes (in fact tvtropes started as a buffy fansite??) and almost everything i hear sounds... bad. it sounds like a cringe show. i'm sorry
i haven't seen it at all so thats not fair of me. but. yeah
or maybe the show isn't cringe but the fandom is. or both. hmm
buffy the vampire slayer was a 90s supernatural show made by joss whedon at his peak LOOK IM A FEMINIST fuckery
it stars sarah michelle gellar (who i know primarily as daphne in the live action scooby doo movies, and that bitch from cruel intentions) as buffy summers. and she's The Slayer. slayers are like chosen ones, and its a title thats passed on for i dunno hundreds of years
slayers... slay vampires, i presume
she talks in a specific manner hence the trope Buffy Speak. it's basically like a weird simple talky thingy (that was buffy speak)
one of the characters is willow rosenberg played by allison hannigan. and as a bi activist engrossed with fiction, i have certainly heard of this character. basically, she's the poster child for The 90s Being Weird About Bisexuality. as she was into dudes and then she's into a girl and the show is weird about it and she's Suddenly Lesbian. and like, yes, lesbians discovering themselves after dating dudes is totally a thing but thats not the logic being used here, it's just awkward biphobia. oh yes. i've heard much about willow and tara
tho, willow/tara is a case of Fair For It's Day
seth green played oz, a sardonic werewolf of little words. he was the dude willow was into before her bisexuality activated
david borealis and james marsters are angel and spike, they're two vampires that buffy is super into and i get the vibe that their love triangle is like a Big Thing in this show and/or the fandom. angel is the "good" one, spike is the bad one. i read that buffy and spike raped each other (with the buffy raping spike being played for laughs because life is a fucking nightmare). so that's fucked
angel got his own spin off called angel and one time angel became a muppet in it. i approve
angel is one of those brooding "i can never be good, theres no hope for me" types of vampires. the kinda guy tailored for certain women to be like "ohhh i can fix him" or whatever. it's kinda funny. on the flipside i assume spike is for the "mmm i don't wanna fix him" types
this is before this type of thing was subject to parody
there's some blando guy named xander, i think he's a nerd and meant to be an audience self insert. i've seen ppl say he has nice guy syndrome but i dunno how true that is. dunno who plays him
anthony head plays rupert giles, he's the exposition and mentor dude. makes dry remarks and spouts encouragement, i think
charmed, a show i love, apparently stole buffy's vibes a lot
buffy is the first show where somebody used google as a verb. as in "googled"
theres a musical episode wherein dancer and singer hilton battle Absolutely Fucks. oh and everybody has musical numbers, including one that ends with tara levitating from cunnilingus. this was noteworthy because sapphic characters being sexual was actually rare in mainstream media in the 90s. again, fair for it's day
oh, this is a monster of the week show where some overarching story each season. doug jones made a few appearances
i get the impression that buffy is one of those shows that has good actors and concepts but fucky writing. it happens, i feel you
is buffy a cheerleader or did i imagine that. i might be thinking of heroes (which also suffered from great acting, fucky writing)
anyways thank you for your time

Rewatching the OC
I decided to rewatch through the OC and here are some thoughts I had on S1E1:
Love how the first scene the just had "CHINO" spray panted across a wall behind the actors to show that they were in Chino. Think that's funny.
How did that cop know that they were stealing that car? They drove by after the window had been smashed and it would have just looked like a guy standing next to a car since it was kinda dark. Also where did the other two cop cars come from so quickly???
How is Trey (the older brother) only looking at 3-5 years for 1) stealing a car 2) crashing said car 3) having a gun in his pants while stealing said car 4) having pot in his jacket while stealing said car and 5) having multiple priors??? Like sure he's white but this was a poor area and he had multiple priors. Would have thought more like 10-15 for a "light" sentence. Maybe I just don't know the avg. sentences for this stuff.
Also I feel like there's a better way to steal an old car like that other than just smashing in the window. He was begging to get caught.
Ryan says social security is theorized to run out by 2025... is that true? I need to do some research on that...
Also, love how the writers went "we'll make him really smart and we'll show that by him saying the same edgelord type of 'nothing matters, society sucks' philosophy we find online from other teenagers! Perfect!"
Sandy telling a kid he just met that he's stupid and weak feels a little weird but maybe that's because I know these characters
We are only 3 mins in... yikes.
Love the early 2000s mens wardrobe. Ryan's hoodie and leather jacket slays. And his slutty little almost choker necklace? Bring that fashion style back, please men I'm begging you.
Oh good. Mom's exposition time is here to tell us his dad's also in jail.
We finally reached the theme song and I am so grateful for it. This song slaps so hard. Top tier 2000s teen show intro.
Malewife Sandy with his wife being the primary breadwinner. Iconic, esp for the time.
Ryan and I smoke the same brand of cigarettes. Fun fact.
"Who are you?" "Whoever you want me to be?" SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP
He had a lighter, why not just light her cigarette normally. Rizz is through the roof.
He's trying so hard to look tough, its so funny.
Love Sandy. He's so funny. His facial expressions are great.
His white wifebeater tanktop is so iconic. I bought one when I first saw the show because I loved his outfits despite the fact that I was (and still am) a chick.
Seth is also so funny.
But the fact that he named his boat after a chick he's never spoken to before is wild. Makes sense for a teenage boy though.
Sandy's so good to Ryan. The tie scene is so sweet.
I forgot everyone thinks Ryan's from different places.
How is Marissa gonna say she doesn't know if Ryan is a cousin or a poolboy when she was the once who decided he was the cousin???
Ryan is so unbothered it's funny. Some dude's sobbing in the bathroom. Not his problem.
The All American Rejects song really adds to the time period of this show.
This show really did not prepare me for what high school parties would be like. Maybe I just didn't grow up in the right tax bracket.
I did have to skip the part where Seth yells at him at the party. It kinda hurts to watch. A necessary evil tho.
I am sad Ryan got his ass handed to him but to be fair it was like 5 vs 1.5 (Seth only half counts)
L friends leaving marissa passed out on her back on her back porch. Take her back with yall. Damn.
Ryan is so lucky no one was out to see him carrying a passed out girl to his bed. Also how did she grab around him if she's so passed out??? Whatever.
"He has a family Sandy. It's not up to you to decide if they're good enough." Except he didn't? Ryan literally called him asking for help because his mom kicked him out and her boyfriend beat him up. Sandy didn't decide shit. L wife.
The breakfast scene is so funny. Just the way the wife (idk her name) was put in the position to immediately feel bad about kicking him out as he pulls like a kicked puppy act. Comedy gold.
Seth PUT THOSE CONCRETE GRIPPERS AWAY
Seth and Ryan's friendship is so cute. He met this dude like 24 hours ago and he wants to go visit him in Chino. Adorable, we love positive male bonding here.
Good news, Marissa survived. And she didn't even look hungover. Good for her. I mean other than the douche-y boyfriend.
Thank goodness Sandy stuck around after dropping Ryan off because there's no way that boy would have called him for help again. He would have just tried to figure it out. Bless his heart.
This show slaps so hard, can't wait to finish rewatching it because high key I don't think I ever actually finished it the first time.

Seth Rogen, in most of his movies, is an ass. Like, it just seems to come with the territory - and that's fine. But, the key thing - and I'm starting to really find myself frustrated trying to sit through movies that fail at this - is that you can't immediately show us the person is an ass or otherwise an idiot.
The first Chronicles of Narnia movie starts in the middle of a war, with a bombing. Sets you up to really be rooting for the characters - and then they immediately mess that up. Sure, he's a kid and sentimental - but he puts his entire family at risk to save a picture - and that's really off-putting to start the movie; the train station, everything there, doesn't really help. The Heat, Melissa McCarthy's character is a total ass - and they start from go and do not stop. It might've been funny for a second, but when you're 5 minutes into a horrible scene played for humor that is anything but, you're over it.
Here - you sort of expect him to be an ass. And he is, quite honestly. But, and this is the key thing, before you see him as an ass, you first see him as a young kid who's father yells at him for trying to stop some bullies from bullying another kid and then who rips the head off of his superhero doll. And with that intro, you're already sympathetic to the kid. So when they zip ahead 20 years and he ends up being a spoiled rich brat, that first impression sticks with you. And so, even with the assery continues, you've already sorta accepted him as a flawed, idiotic hero - but not a character you've hated from the word 'go.' Which is key, I think.
I don't know the backstory of the character, so I don't know how well this sticks to the script - but, given how our characters are portrayed, it is totally believable that Rogen's character would think that the best way to be superheroes is by pretending to be a villain. Totally checks out. So does the later disagreement/fight, and the firing Cameron Diaz, and the whole 'twist' with the USB drive (so, so predictable, though - I feel that's a twist every movie uses when they have an idiot detective) - predictable, yes, but also very much in tune with what you expect of his character given what you see throughout the whole movie.
Much like Green Lantern, I think this movie unfairly gets a bad rap (in terms of being a superhero movie). Sure, coming out the same year as Thor and Captain America can't help - the MCU was already going strong, with Avengers releasing the following year - and this doesn't really compare to that. But then, I don't think it's supposed to. It's its own story, with what is probably more of an 'antihero' than a true superhero. And while it's not spectacular or the pinnacle of cinema, it is pretty entertaining.
Clearly at this point out they're not going to make a sequel, and it seems Rogen didn't like the final product. I understand, I guess, and it's not my favorite movie of his (50/50 - where he's also sort of an ass), but I did actually sorta like this one. It kept me entertained, which is the key thing for a movie where the plot is pretty predictable - you can see the issues arising between them because of her; you can foresee them fighting and parting ways, because that's what happens between superheroes and partners in movies; you can see the twist of the baddie; you can see the twist with his father; you can see the aforementioned USB twist - it's all predictable. But then, you don't watch superhero movies generally for brand-new plots - you watch them to be entertained, and to see the hero save the day.
Of course, our hero probably doesn't undergo much of the character development that would've suited him well given his very spoiled brat behavior early on - sure, he becomes 'good,' but it's sorta sudden (it works, I guess, with the twist about the baddie and his father's death clearly hitting him) and feels like it could've gone a bit slower or given him a bit more depth. Instead, he's suddenly changed (tho, given the 'kissing' scene right after, maybe not fully), and he also apologizes very suddenly and everything is very quickly hunky-dory, even after that huge fight. Not that I wanted it dragged out (hell no!), but maybe at least a little bit of him introspecting or thinking about it. I guess, on the plus side, he might be an ass of a person with a really stupid idea, but it never seems like his morals are missing. He retains that throughout, even if his actions to be a 'save the city superhero' are a bit unusual.
Jay Chou and Christoph Waltz are great too; Cameron Diaz doesn't have much scope in what is pretty much a buddy/buddy superhero movie.
I was thoroughly entertained. Not 'top 10 movies of 2011,' mind you, but still something fun that I could probably even watch again if bored.
