Intersex, asexual, and transgender pride hearts!

Working on a concept for the lesbian flag (which could translate to the male gay flag, too).

The chain of hearts on the side would basically start at your ring finger and run up the back of the glove (all my patterns are written for the left hand unless it's a special set, this one can be mirrored for the right). I might make the hearts a little bigger, but that's the concept. I wanted to work in all seven colors, because each one stands for something different and I think that's important.

More than ever these recent days, I've been thinking a lot about the SiIvaGunner community - earlier this week with 2023! YEAR OF THE PORTAL RADIO! I unabashedly wrote more about that than the rip itself. Because I find it to be such an interesting fandom to be part of, due just to how...scattered, it feels, in a lot of ways. The main hub of discussion is the SiIvaGunner Fan Discord, which by the very nature of Discord servers themselves has a sort of, fleeting and temporary feel to it - its hard to get a feel of what's what around there when there's no real way to see "popular" posts or whatnot like on other social media. And even on Twitter, and the handful of people you'll find here on Tumblr like me, there's a big divide with SiIvaGunner fans, those who just like to keep up with the silly mashups, those invested in the lore, those far too invested in both like me, and so many other subfactions - it rarely feels like we're able to band together to form a unified voice.

But whenever we are, it tends to be within the one place we're all drawn to. The YouTube channel itself.

Throughout Season 1's wild lore progression with GiIvaSunner's termination, Chad Warden, Snow Halation, and The Reboot, it became clear to us in the audience that the best way to keep track of all that was happening and to share those news with others, was to simply do it in the comments of all the videos we were already watching. All the classic jokes, new jokes, sudden twists, and places with room to speculate on what it all could mean - no matter what a rip was about, there'd always be a community there, a crowd of people always awaiting what could be right around the corner. A crowd that, directly through the events of The Reboot, had now learned to actually respect one another, and to share their love of rips, music, and gaming with one another, unified as fans.

And its that knowledge of the community's growth, the way it manages to feel both bizarrely disconnected yet simultaneously unified, that makes Because I Love You hit all the harder than it already does. Because especially back then, we were all expecting SiIvaGunner to just play along as they always do, to keep making silly rips no matter the day, keep us in the community engaged in what's being made. Yet Because I Love You, neither in title nor contents holds no joke in sight - it's a beautiful, hand-played piano cover of the titular song, paying respects to the late Satoru Iwata who passed away a year prior to the video's upload. A community and channel otherwise known for its laughs, bits, and intricate lore, were suddenly faced with a piece of darkness from the real world - the lingering sorrow that followed Iwata's death.

Just a day after this post goes up, SiIvaGunner is set to appear at this year's MAGFest, represented by a bunch of its current team members. Members of the SiIvaGunner team are more recognized now than ever before, yet back during the days of following Season 1, it was quite easy to miss the fact that the channel was ran by a group of creatives to begin with - that it wasn't just an elaborate prank by some mysterious organization of employees, or just a shameless reposting page, or whatever other conspiracy floated around back in the day. For as much fun as SiIvaGunner likes to have, for all the absurdities and shitposts and takeovers - it is a channel ran by humans, humans who just like us, were brought together by a unified love for video games. A loss like Satoru Iwata's is one that was only truly felt by those who truly do love video games as an artform - to those who, for instance, have dedicated years of their life to following a channel all about celebrating all that the music of video games means to their players, old and new.

Because I Love You, much like Telling Fish Tales, is simply a beautiful reminder of all the human love, empathy, and community that exists within this silly channel. And even back in Season 1, the community knew to set their jokes and banter aside to pay their respects to Iwata, to all that he accomplished for the history of the medium, and for helping to rescue one of the most beloved, influential and downright legenary games of its time. All these years later, and as SiIvaGunner itself enters one more Season of running, I hope we can continue respecting and honoring those that craft the experiences we hold so dear.

United or scattered, those feelings remain.

Hello to you beloveds and 2024,

I’m not super great at feelings, so let me start with a thank you. The past year (past few years tbh) was full of wild ups and downs. I started this tumblr and jumped in with both feet because I was tired of searching for something. I figured maybe I’d get a couple of mutuals and keep up with the latest Ghost news and that was about it. What happened was a complete surprise to me and I got to share so many special and silly moments with people who are just so fucking wonderful.

YOU. I'm talking about you.

Because of you, I started writing again. I actually shared my work when I never ever thought I would again. And because of you, I have had the support of so SO many people along the way.

I've come across the most amazing writers, artists, and gif makers. & I've made friends (which as an old ass haunted painting, that hasn't always been easy for me) but having friends made the last few months so much easier to get through while my time and focus and creativity were no longer mine.

Yumi and The Nightmare Painter Shadowbox Master Post 1:

The Yoki-Hijo

I am head over heels for making these Cosmere Shadow Boxes. I would love to find a better mold than the 4" coasters but for now they are so pretty! I don't even know what I'll do with them but for now I'm happy the exist.

To begin, I once again sketched out a design trying to focus on strong silhouettes, and cut out each layer on a different piece of card stock. I decided to go with warm colors to push the heat of Yumi's environment and give some good contrast to the Painter Box coming soon.

Learning from the Mistborn Shadow Box, I was worried about such delicate shapes floating in the resin and messing with the depth. So I tried something that worked out ok with a fabric backing I did for a commission for a friend. I painted the paper cut outs with resin and let them cure on a silicone mat to hopefully give them some more rigidity and less buoyancy in the resin.

I wanted to lean in to the "traditional" vibe that Yumi's side of the story has, so I included real natural elements as part of the resin inclusions.

Real pressed flowers and gravel give the work a more grounded (sorry) element which will contrast nicely with what I have planned for Painter. I also decided to have some fun with it and "stacked" some rocks up the sides. The flowers floating in the sky are such an iconic part of her world that I had to include them.

I didn't take pictures of the individual layers going in this time around because, thanks to the resin painted over each piece, the long curing time between each layer became unnecessary so the process was a lot faster this time around (yay, we're learning!) But you can see the added flowers and some of the gems acting as stand ins for the Hijo floating around the stacks. I know they aren't "book accurate" but I wanted just the tiniest bits of Cyan and Magenta in Yumi's piece. (Keep an eye out for their parallels in Painter's piece)

I'm really fond of the way the resin soaks into the light card stock like water. It creates a very specific kind of translucency that lends itself to the "atmospheric fade" that creates a light illusion of distance and depth.

A quick check through the bottom to preview how it all looks before we add the resin on to the final backing paper layer...

The pale lemon yellow paper pics up a lot of depth from the resin soaking in. I also swirled in the littlest bit of gold luster-dust and a drip of orange ink to the corners for a little depth of color before putting the paper down and more resin over top.

And the final reveal:

A little flat with the simple background, but that's expected. The contrast is exactly what I was hoping for. I mixed a little bit of the glow powder seen beneath the Shadow Box there to help boost the reflectivity of light which can be seen bleeding up around her knees a little bit which I hope helps evoke that heat her land is known for.

When backlit, the rein soaked into the card stock gives the whole scene an almost dreamy quality as the stone stacks fade but Yumi remains stark and crisply focused.

No preview of Painter yet, I am still trying to puzzle out a good silhouette for him that will show what he's actually doing when he's hunched over a canvas without being able to use internal contours... but I can share that I bought some EL wire and hope to line his piece with real hion lines!... once I figure out how to make the wire Cyan and Magenta along the places I want it to go.

Once Painter is done, I don't plan to stop. Maybe Warbreaker next... or Stormlight, though I have other plans for that behemoth.

Real talk: Anyone who wants to float an idea, I wanna hear it. These are too fun to stop. (I could maybe even be talked into parting with one if the situation arises)

God I just love how fucking real they are. The way they’re written. They have their fights, their conflicts, their toxic moments just like any real life WLW couple would and yet all of that only shows the depth of their love rather than pulls them down and turns me off.

I swear that draws me to them more than the actual love displayed between them because the way they handle the rocky moments in their relationship is just bloody brilliant. It’s so natural the way that they come undone and then come back together again. I don’t know, I can’t really articulate well what I mean by this.

But it’s something you can watch and pick up on for yourself. The realness of them. I haven’t seen anything like it since Xena and Gabrielle to be honest, who have - arguably - the rockiest moments in their love story that is possible to have and depict in TV art/entertainment without a ratings change, and yet - it makes them better. It makes their love story far more significant because you see what they go through and what they have to overcome and the tremendous strength and effort to do so because they love each other so damn much and don’t want to lose that love.

Yeah, WayHaught are exactly like that. There may not be a “Gab Drag” equivalent scene between them but what is displayed is very reminiscent of “the rift” arc that puts Xena and Gabrielle through the ringer,… because it doesn’t destroy them completely. It only ever makes them stronger and even more in love. Which is what you want from drama and conflict.

Well-written fleshed out queer main characters provide this rollercoaster ride of representation. And - for me - WLW couples in TV art/entertainment just don’t feel real without all the drama and conflict.

But there obviously needs to be a balance. You don’t want it to be soap opera level of drama and conflict where everything that happens happens BECAUSE there NEEDS to be drama and conflict because it’s shock value and cheap viewership. But rather - you need to show how BECAUSE of all the drama and conflict, the relationship is much more real and strong and substantial than a spectacle to gawp and gasp at.

And yeah, they do WayHaught very fucking well when it comes to this. They’re in a Universe where everything is meant to be high stakes all the time so the drama and conflict between them doesn’t come out of left field. It’s organic and logical progression.

They’re really well fucking written I have to say. And it makes me all the more invested in their relationship because I love fantasy as a genre in the overall concept and environment of a TV show but I never want fantasy in a couple. I always want the real shit.

And WayHaught are the real shit. Absolutely!

It’s what I love about Xena and Gabrielle so much. That they’re a REAL couple in a FANTASY show.
