Analysing a Thiruvasagam Quote from OK Kanmani
Yeah, I actually spent 10 whole minutes translating the Thiruvasagam that's quoted in this random scene in OK Kanmani because I wanted a study break. Sue me.
Tumblr media
So there's this scene in OK Kanmani where Tara calls Adi for the first time saying, "Tamil kaekkanam pola irundhuthu."
He says, "Uh huh," and she's like, "Avalavu thaan Tamil theriyuma?"
So he's like, "Illa, Thevaram, konjam Thiruvasagam kooda theriyum," and he quotes a hymn from Thiruvasagam:
Thiruvasagam is basically a bunch of hymns composed in praise of Lord Shiva by Manikkavasagar. I knew Thiruvasagam existed right from when I was a kid who could understand what was going on around her, but I never really explored its verses until I watched this scene (and I'm not embarrassed about that at all, go figure). In case you don't know Tamil and you didn't get the context, the male lead Adi says, "I know a little bit of Thevaram and Thiruvasagam also," showing off his knowledge of the Tamil language (cuz that's hot, okay? Normalize showing off your Tamil knowledge before asking a Tamil girl out). And then he starts saying this.
Translation:
Like a flame flower blooming on a tree of unblemished fire,
The Guru Murti, the rare honey-like nectar, oh Shiva,
The guru who protects us by helping us detach from affection.
Blessing us with love to get rid of the bad qualities in my mind,
Standing anonymously, the one who is a river of kindness,
The nectar that never becomes too sweet, oh infinite Lord,
The light that shines in the mind of the ignorant,
The one who makes my heart melt like water and stands as my precious one.
Damnnnnnn. I've heard my mom say, "திருவாசகத்திற்கு உருகாதோர், ஒரு வாசகத்திற்கும் உருகார்," meaning the heart that doesn't melt for the Thiruvasagam won't melt for anything else. Now I get why. I know all this hyperbole sounds really weird in English, but in Tamil, and I think in most vernacular language, hyperbole of this kind is just absolutely beautiful. So if your heart doesn't melt for this, don't worry. It's probably because my translation skills are poor.

"And, without a doubt, that is the kindest thing you can say about life. It’s not nothing."

The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka
Just finished reading Shehan Karunatilaka's Booker Prize-winning book, and while it started with a style of writing that had the voice of a cynic trying too hard to establish itself, it eventually eases out, embraces the character well, and we get to see Sheha's Lanka in its beautiful honesty. I have recently been shooting again on film, so the protagonist being a photographer shooting on film in the 80s added a balmy touch for me. The book captures the politics, and its people, and mixes them with the supernatural in such a living, materialistic way, that you don't realise when you are with a living and when you are not.
Also, kudos to the author for never losing sight of the whodunnit angle. Shehan has gambled like a professional, serving cards in a way that would keep you guessing, and tugging at your heart just like the way Maali did at his Nikon 3ST (tried looking up this model, but I guess it's a fictitious one, but it must be a rangefinder with leaf shutter because it hardly makes a sound when taking a photo).
Lastly, I always love a book with plenty of quote-worthy lines, and this book does so without trying to dish out a sermon. Shehan's book is definitely an ace at that. Sharing some of the lines that I highlighted while reading.
_
"All stories are recycled and all stories are unfair."
_
"‘We are educated Colombo Tamils. We must be careful and not attract attention. You understand, no?’ You think of the lottery of birth and how everything else is mythology, stories the ego tells itself to justify fortune or explain away injustice. You wonder if you should hold your tongue."
_
"‘Because people are OK if bad things happen to people who aren’t them.’"
_
"‘Why is Sri Lanka number one in suicides?’ asks the girl, peering through thick glasses. Are we that much more sadder or violent than the rest of the world?’ ‘Who the fuck cares?’ says the hunched figure, as a lady in pigtails does her high jump over the edge. ‘It’s because we have just the right amount of education to understand that the world is cruel,’ says the schoolgirl. ‘And just enough corruption and inequality to feel powerless against it.’"
_
"‘God’s gift,’ the warden said, ‘His violence... God loves violence. You understand that, don’t you?... Why else would there be so much of it? It’s in us. It comes out of us. It is what we do more naturally than we breathe. There is no moral order at all. There is only this – can my violence conquer yours?’ Dennis Lehane, Shutter Island"
This one is not by Shehan but it makes so much sense when it appears in the book.
_
"‘You know why the battle of good vs evil is so one-sided, Malin? Because evil is better organised, better equipped and better paid. It is not monsters or yakas or demons we should fear. Organised collectives of evil doers who think they are performing the work of the righteous. That is what should make us shudder.’"
_
"Even on the sad days, when you have to process young children or those leaving lovers behind, you come to realise that every death is significant, even when every life appears not to be."
_
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ending with two shots I had taken during my trip to Colombo back in 2010. You can read more about it on my old blog.

I arrived in India earlier today, but really thought I should write something about Sri Lanka it’s history and also the Civil War.
Sri Lanka is beautiful and has amazing beaches, fantastic temples and the people are (generally) wonderful. It does however have a bit of a bloody history and the worst bits are really quite recent.
Sri Lanka is home to over 20 million people and has a long history. The two largest ethnic groups are Sinhalese (mainly Buddhist) and the Tamils (mainly Hindu). The Sinhalese make up 75% of the population and the Tamils around 15%, Wikipedia says there are also 9% Sri Lankan Moors.
Sri Lanka can trace back their history around 3,000 years, of course there will be a longer undocumented history and there is evidence of human settlements from 125,000 years ago.
The Sinhalese Kingdoms existed from at least 543 BCE until the British took over in 1815. There were other Kingdoms that coexisted at times including the Jaffna Kingdom 1215-1624 and the Vanni Chiefdoms from the 12th century to 1803 and, of course the Portuguese 1597-1658 and Dutch 1640-1796.
The location of Sri Lanka meant it was a huge prize to the Europeans who wanted to take advantage of the historic trading routes and ‘Maritime Silk Road’ for spices and of course tea!
I have previously touched on the Portuguese, Dutch and British rivalries in previous posts (mainly about forts). The Brits arrived in 1815 taking over the Dutch Forts and Ports.
The Sinhalese Kingdom shrunk during the time and the capital moved a number of times, I managed to visit most of the previous capitals including Anuradhapura and Kandy as well as Jaffna (capital of the Jaffna Kingdom) and Colombo (capital for the British and modern Sri Lanka until 1982).
In 1948 Sri Lanka, then Ceylon gained it’s Independence as a dominion and a Republic in 1972 (when the name change took place).
In 1982 a bloody Civil War between the (Sinhalese) Government and the Tamil Tigers (The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) started and lasted for 26 years ending in 2009.
There are always multiple versions of history and whilst in Sri Lankan I mainly heard that the Tamils were terrorists and all sorts of atrocities were laid at their door (some of which were quite clearly untrue) - and, of course, one person’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter. Even the UN has been unable to ascertain the full facts (not that I have much time for the UN - but that’s a whole other Mussolini quote!)
What is not in doubt is some of the key facts that started the Civil War. The Government and Sinhalese persecuted the Tamil minority in a number of ways dating back a far as Independence where Sinhalese was recognised as the sole Official Language and the Ceylon Citizenship Act made around 700,000 stateless. There were attacks in 1956, 1958, 1977, the burning down of Jaffna Library in 1981. It was Black July Pogrom in 1983 and the Tamils responding by killing 13 Sri Lankan soldiers that started the actual Civil War.
None of this excuses the killing of innocent civilians (or indeed the armed forces) by the Tamil Tigers, who it is said invented suicide bombings with a number of attacks on religious worshippers over the years. It is believed over 100,000 people (on both sides) died during the Civil War and it is thought to include more than 40,000 civilians.
The Civil War raged for decades and there seems to be have been a number phases (Wikipedia has a good history) and was brought to an end in 2009 with the Government crushed the remaining Tamil Tigers.
One result of the Civil war ending is the north of the island is opening up again. Hopefully the increase in tourism will help provide funds to rebuild from both the Civil War and tsunami.

The way I quickly came back from my morning shift, are my dinner, cleaned up and sat on my bed to read the new chapter, was so worth it.
Oh God. We're getting close to the "accident" aren't we? I want to know more, but I also don't want to read it. Poor Arthur and Lance had to witness it. Oh God dont tell me Mallory and Logan tortured them for 2 whole days until Max turned up. fuck. No. I don't want to know. Jesus.
The present timeline reminded me a LOT OF TLND. The raisins, the ring making, the late night calls.. so cute.
Lance is coming out of his shell. Cute.
Ugh, Max making an effort ALWAYS for David. The moment David said the lilies died, Max sent another one the morning after with a beautiful quote. I would treasure that note if I were in David's place (who am I kidding, I'm sure David is gonna frame them.)
Yes, we're close to the "accident" 👀
And Max is a Lightwood-Bane. They're hella romantic 🫢
Also this whole phone conversation reminded me of this random tamil song I love and I listened to it while I wrote it 🥰

The Benefits of Selling your Old Silk Sarees
Have you ever wondered if you have had some extra space for your new collection or wish to get rid of your old Karnataka silks Mysore or any original banarasi saree? Then Old Zari is your one-stop solution.Putting your used saree for sale is one of the best ways to get money for your used saree and make some space for your old ones.
Here is why you should sell your old silk sarees.
In addition to decluttering your closet and earning extra cash, there are many more reasons to consider selling old items online. If you purchase a new saree for every occasion you attend and end up with things you've barely worn once, or if you're trying to dispose of some of your silk sarees in Mysore to create room for beautiful and designer silk sarees, don't just discard them. Used clothing is gaining in popularity.
Let's check what other benefits you can get.
#1 It is Beneficial to the Environment
Without a doubt, rapid fashion is destroying the Environment. When clothing or sarees have only been used several times and are inexpensive enough to discard, they contribute to the garbage crisis. This concerns our planet.
Selling your Karnataka silks in Mysore allows someone else to utilize them for a more extended period. So this lowers the need for fast fashion and prevents waste from being disposed of in landfills.
#2 Make good money in return for your valuable sarees
Don't worry if you think you can't make enough money out after putting your old used silk sarees for sale. Reputed old silk saree buyers like Oldzari give the best value on your used silk sarees. After evaluating your saree, we will share the exact quote of your saree.
With OLDZARI, be assured of getting the best value for your saree since we are the industry leaders and are aware of your valuable silk and banarasi sarees.
So the next time you put your valuable sarees inside the wardrobes forever, think about the monetary value they hold and how you can make some extra cash in return for your old unused silk sarees.
Why Choose Old Zari To Sell Silk & Original Banarasi Saree?
Your wardrobe is a treasure if you have beautiful, unused, original silk sarees. So why let them sit idle or wait for them to get damaged or deteriorate due to external factors? So we at Old Zari are here to help you profitably dispose of your old sarees so that you can get a return on your investment and we can get a beautiful silk saree.
When considering the value of your original banarasi saree, we look for the zari. If a genuine Banarasi Saree is weaved with Pure Zari, its selling price will be higher. Older Banarsi Sarees contain a more significant percentage of silver content and have a higher monetary worth. Banarsi saris are among the best in India, with gold and silver embroidery or zari, quality silk, and splendid artistry.
Should You Exchange Your Karnataka Silk Mysore Or Banarasi Sarees?
Exchanging your old silk sarees is a terrible idea since you might never realize how much your saree is worth when exchanging, and you may not understand how they estimate the worth. Furthermore, you have to limit yourself to purchasing sarees just from that store. Yet, when selling your sarees Old Zari, you will get the cash you may use for other needs.

How Do Online iPhone Repair Services Work?
Online iPhone repair services typically work by allowing you to request a repair online through their website or app. The process usually involves the following steps:
Diagnosis: You will be asked to describe the problem you're experiencing with your iPhone. Based on this information, the repair service will diagnose the issue.
Quote: The repair service will provide you with a quote for the repair. This quote will typically include the cost of parts and labour.
Shipping: You will need to ship your iPhone to the repair service. Some services may provide a prepaid shipping label, while others may require you to pay for shipping.
Repair: Once the repair service receives your iPhone, they will repair it according to the diagnosis. This may involve replacing parts or performing software repairs.
Testing: After the repair is complete, the service will test your iPhone to ensure that it is working properly.
Return Shipping: Once your iPhone has been repaired and tested, the service will ship it back to you. Some services may provide a prepaid shipping label for return shipping, while others may require you to pay for shipping.
It's important to note that not all repairs can be done online. Some repairs may require you to bring your iPhone to a physical location or to an authorised repair shop. Additionally, some repairs may not be possible at all if your iPhone is too old or damaged beyond repair.
