A strange bit of hate Azula gets is her “sneak attack” of Aang in the Crossroads of destiny.  I’m not talking about her nearly killing Aang in the avatar state, that is warranted even if I disagree, but her being sneaky.  Shooting Aang when he was unprepared.  But that doesn’t make sense.  She wasn’t being sneaky, she didn’t ambush or surprise Aang.  She surprised the audience.

Azula did not break the flow of combat.  Didn’t attack out of turn.  Merely took the easiest and most effective shot she could.  But it disrupted what audience expected.  

The powerup trope is not new.  It saturates kids media.  The Power Rangers stopping so that they can combine forces into a super weapon for example.  A lot of other shows do this as well.  To the point where no one bats an eye when the hero's get ten seconds to get their power up.  Usually this is the time to cheer and look forward to the awesome fight about to occur and watch the hero’s beat down the bad guys.  Its what we started to expect in ATLA as well.

Azula didn’t let this happen.  She surprised the audience by breaking this trope people were conditioned to expect.  We weren't shown her getting into her stance or new she was about to let leash one of the few times we see lightning used in battles, so when she did it was genuine shock.

But in context of a fight outside of cartoon logic this doesn’t make sense.  Attack when your enemy is unprepared.  Hit them while they are weak.  And its not like Aang was alone.  Katara was still aware of her surroundings if only overwhelmed.  Expecting your enemy to strike at a time like this would be second nature.  They would be aware that something would probably be coming or attempted.  Azula did not surprise them by doing the smart and obvious thing.

In summary Azula did not hit Aang with a sneak attack.  In context of the fight it never stopped for Aang.  It only surprised the audience because it broke a trope we all come to expect.

(Side note:  While in context of a childs cartoon a shot like this is unexpected, that is not the case in adult media.  When guns are involved the counting of bullets by the hero is common and they wait to fight or flee when the enemy is reloading.)

I wish people would let others vent about their personal experience with a certain section of a game without inserting their unwarranted experience in how they did it differently and that they reaped the rewards soooo easily like a sweaty gamer on their first try, as if that adds to the conversation and not at all makes the others feel even more demoralizing and definitely soured their first experience and have to expect an outcome in order to win in their favor at this point by save scumming

i made a post entertaining the Alice-Karen theory before and i still don't know where i stand on believing it. i thought it was a complete crack theory that's just straight up disprovable by canon going into it but the insane number of odd things somehow supporting it, which i apparently never payed attention to before rewatching s4, weird me out (you can also extend it back to further seasons if you genuinely want to buy into it)

i really don't like the "and they're Related!" twist usually so i don't have a particular bias towards the theory being true. but i wanted to check it out for fairness sake to give it a chance (personal preference aside) and now i don't know what i think anymore. it's like. there's some very good arguments you can make against it. but there's also a weird amount of things that DO imply something is going for which we don't have an explanation for yet

but no matter if Karen is actually Alice

i do genuinely believe something was incomplete about Both the flashbacks to the Creel murders we saw. Victors AND Henry's version. because the story we're ultimately shown by Henry makes sense on a surface level but it also directly contradicts the timeline of events it's trying to lay out to us. Henry is either specifically leaving something out when talking to Nancy that would explain the hole in the timeline he subtly leaves OR Henry is Also an unreliable narrator because he genuinely thinks he's telling the true story like Victor did as well

i'm quite ambivalent to the Wheeler-Creel theories but i DO have thoughts on it after looking into it (i'm going to actually make posts about that at some point. arguing for and against it probably). but regardless of whether Karen is actually Alice. Something is sure going on with Alice Creel. even if she ends up being a random girl, s4 was definitely not the last we heard about her with the story we were left

#i seriously need to write an actual post about the timeline fuckery of Henry's recounting of events #because he's either lying intentionally or unaware of something because the chain of events he shows Nancy isn't actually possible #in the order he presents it #and it's not just a pretty significant gap in his timeline but also the way Henry tells us what he did while the events on screen make #what he says... very unlikely to be the full story. you're leaving shit out Henry. anyway hate to admit it but the ff7 rebirth trailer actually makes it look like a legitimately fun game. at this point of the compilation mess the story and characters are beyond salvaging anyway so if they manage to capture the environment and overall feeling i might actually humour playing this?? the gold saucer looked fun as hell. there are chocobos that climb walls. junon looked sick.
