rewatching cardcaptor sakura and sailor moon makes me remember how worried i was that i couldn't twirl a baton. i mean how could i ever hope to dramatically swirl my magical item in my magical girl era if i can't twirl and catch a baton?

What is Baton Twirling?
What is Baton Twirling? According to The World Baton Twirling Federation, "Baton twirling is a sport involving the manipulation of a metal rod with the hands and body to a co-coordinated routine."
Tumblr media
Most twirling organizations have their athletes compete to set music (United States Twirling Association), while others have their athletes compete to any song that comes on (National Baton Twirling Association). Baton Twirling combines dance and gymnastics while manipulating one, two or three batons at the same time. There are different disciplines of this sport. Majorettes, that twirl in a group for their marching band, perform at a lower level of difficulty than competitive twirlers. Competitive twirlers can compete in a group or individually. There are Artistic Groups and Teams. Individually there are Artistic Twirl, Solo, Two Baton, Three Baton, Short Program, Freestyle, and Collegiate. Many competition twirlers start at the early age of two. This sport takes lots of time and practice. Over many years this sport has given the opportunity to many athletes to travel across the world!

What is a Baton?
According to The World Baton Twirling Federation, "The baton is an instrument constructed of steel with rubber ends similar in consistency to a vehicle tire.  It weighs approximately ½ pound and is anywhere from 18-32 inches in length.  The athlete uses a baton that is sized to the length of their arm from the shoulder to the tip of the fingers.  It is weighted and balanced for air dynamic flow."

I hope this give you a little more knowledge on this sport, but watch out for more to come!

I’m sketching out a potential painting. It’s supposed to be a baton twirler against a stain glass window, but a kid at work asked me if it was a man in the shower.
I’m a misunderstood visionary 😞
