#Bruce we get it you miss Dick but isn’t this a bit overkill #jason todd #red hood #batman: the adventures continue #btac #dc #anyway #if you’ve seen my previous posts about this comic you’d probably know what ‘backstory’ I’m talking about #but even when they did Jason Todd dirty to favor Tim I’d say Jason got a compelling enough new backstory with a lot of potential #so if the writers felt the need to copy bit for bit from Jason maybe even they deemed there was nothing interesting enough to pull from Tim #and his backstory. but I think what should annoy you more is #their idea that anything new they could’ve come up with for Tim still wouldn’t top ripping off of Jason lol #also. WHO has ‘monopoly on batfamily joker trauma’? #cause last I recall Jason doesn’t even have monopoly over his own life and death #the way they make everything about it about Bruce’s suffering instead #and the fact that Jason can’t fucking have his way with the joker because that’s not how BRUCE thinks it should be done?? #not to mention when Dick beat the clown to death because he thought Tim was killed (and that was his last straw after Jason) #guess who resuscitated him! starts with a ‘Bru’ and rhymes with caboose #the ONLY person with a monopoly on batfamily joker trauma is Bruce actually lmfao

what are the 1.5 good things about dcau jason?

I'm giving 0.75 to this little tidbit. jason, while he's getting his spy on [1], finds out that deathstroke has a plan to kill batman. he then leaves a note for barbara in the library to warn them about it. I just think it's SOOO on brand for jason to save bruce like this while in the middle of his own revenge plot xD. I've docked it 0.25 because of course the comic needs us to know bruce didn't need the warning. he's batman, he knows everything, he's never caught unaware. it woudn't bother me as much in a different story but this story arc was already a shitshow, so *yawns*

the other 0.75 is for a change in jason's backstory that, albeit with many caveats, sparked my interest: they gave him an older brother, Danny, who joined a gang and ended up as "red hood" (one new guy with mask as the lookout for cops, taking the most risk), and died, thus making jason want revenge, and eventually crossing paths with batman when they both go after the gang.

my caveats are, among others, the red hood bit (I'm an original utrh canon gal about this, 100%), or how the change puts jason closer to this world's also revenge-seeking dick and tim BUT without affording him nearly the same grace. another is that this swaps Catherine (a woman) for Danny (a boy), in a way, and I don't care for that tbh.

but as I said, it sparked my imagination, the idea of a (dead) older sibling for jason, someone who would've influenced him etc. I decided it could be interesting to add that detail to one of my wips (the young justice one, since it's also in an animated 'verse and I thought, why not). except that, because the Catherine thing really bothers me, Danny is now Dani [2] lol. I've also changed details re: Danny's death, and kept the wheels thing with bruce and jason, because that's a first meeting I love too much to erase!

[1] on deathstroke!! I know it was a coincidence, but this reminded me of jason's outsiders arc, when he's spying on deathstroke and overhears he framed black lighting for murder, and immediately decides to go to the heroes about it. great arc, 10/10 would recommend.

[2] who I imagine as a butch lesbian that looks like Roberta Colindrez here. if you care.

Possibly the only bit of characterization/backstory I like from this comic. Jason’s (biological) big brother joined a gang that employs kids as bait to try to feed himself and Jason, donned the red hood, and got killed. Bruce’s first encounter with Jason was in the middle of him attempting to avenge Danny. Then later when Jason crafts his red hood persona, it’s to honor his late brother.

#it’d have been interesting to have at least some mention of Jason’s feelings about surpassing his older brother’s age #especially since it happened after the joker beat him to near death and he was completely alone #even just an offhand thought #cut out all the ‘I was doomed from the start because of my unnecessary violence and anger issues’ bs #and this isn’t half bad #I get that they skipped over Jason in the BTAS/DCAU but the writing for Jason here was an injustice it was so lazy #it wasn’t like they didn’t know how Jason was like either because everything about his character was hand delivered to Tim instead #jason todd #danny todd #batman: the adventures continue #btac #btas #dc
