A whole bunch of people seriously, somehow only realizing now how much Dune influenced Star Wars are gonna lose their minds when they learn about the existence of the John Carter novels, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Star Trek, samurai and wuxia films, sword-and-sandal epics like Ben Hur, the art of Frank Frazetta, the film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, westerns, WWII movies, Greek mythology, Arthurian legend, Shakespearean tragedy….
I mean I’m clearly the idiot here. I’m the one to whom it should have occurred before that I’ve been debating Star Wars with people with little cultural knowledge of anything from before the 80s, and therefore no appreciation for how the combination of all these familiar elements in an unfamiliar way made SW unique and creative before SW as a franchise largely just became a combination of familiar things from other Star Wars media.
