(all new hawkeye [2015], jeff lemire & ramon perez)

finally got around to reading all new hawkeye (2015). only reason it took this long is because i have a long standing feud with lemire ever since doctor star (why did it suck jeff???).

while i do think ANH was extremely fanfic-y in its writing, and not necessarily in a good way, even though i love fanfic - the characterization was clunky, exaggerated and, like i told @evilwickedme, about as subtle as ten bricks to the nuts - i like this barney take. it reads like lemire standing outside with a cardboard sign shouting what he thinks of these characters, but it gets the point across - barney is a big brother in every sense of the word, he's had to protect clint from some tough shit, and he can't afford to have anything like clint's strict moral code. and it's because of him that clint gets to have it, and it's because of him that clint gets to be a superhero.

he DID leave clint to die at the circus after his fight with swordman. he DID go on to lead a life of crime - petty or serious, depending on the run - and he DID hurt a lot of people, including clint. people tend to paint him as an unredeemable abuser because of that. but barney, not unlike clint, has always been the regular guy that does his best. yes unlike clint, his best is never good enough, and that's fascinating to me, on a character level. his moral ambiguity has been explored since his very first appearance and it's great and i love him

in this house we love, respect and sometimes fear barney barton, a big brother who tries his best.

i'm glad all new hawkeye said it with no room for ambiguity, but i still think some of my mutuals could've done a better, subtler character exploration. stop letting people i'm enemies with write my blorbos marvel i'll bite you

HI!!! I of course always will have recs for my fav lil guy!! Not impossible at all!!

There are dif kind of recs I have for like dif kind of dynamics for him cause OH BROTHER has he been through lots.

So if you’re looking for JUST Clint, mostly focused on him runs you can check out:

•Hawkeye (1983) this is my favorite it’s so fun. My comfort read when I’m feelin down in the dumps. It’s goofy and cheesy and everything I could want in an older comic

•Solo Avengers (1987-1989) this is fun too! We get to see him work with a bunch of dif characters

•Hawkeye (1994) he’s so dramatic in this one. We love a drama king 🫶 tough guy with stubble and the weight of the world on his shoulders

•Hawkeye (2003-2004) he’s heavy in his pretty boi era here. Flirty and a little shit we love him. Scarred lip Clint supremacy 🫡

•Hawkeye & Mockingbird (2010) Clint w/ Bobbi (his wife/ex wife/love of his life/woman he still has not gotten over and probably never will) is always a good time. They’re so cute I could squish them

•Hawkeye: Blindspot (2011) this one is sad and talks a lot about his past with Barney (his older brother) but def a read if you care about his relationship with his brother. Some stuff was retconned around this era like Barney’s story wise

•Avengers: Solo (2011) he’s in his detective era with brooding rooftop moon scenes and also a reminder Clint is in fact a bad ass and can be scary when fucked with.

•Hawkeye (2012) the famous Matt Fraction run, everyone knows this bad boy. We love it we kiss it on the forehead. It’s heartbreaking but it was revolutionary in the Clint Barton world and many folks start with this comic because it’s so well known. Tissues my friend. Tissues.

•All New Hawkeye (2015) listen… this one is.. I disagree with some of the narrative here and some of the choices they align Clint with.. and there was more retconning done here. Some fans like it some don’t.

•Hawkeye: Freefall (2020) keep that box of tissues ready you’ll need them my boi is goin THRU IT. It’s ROUGH and commonly associated with that song It’s Called Freefall by Rainbow Kitten Surprise for a REASON.

I like to think about how Barney heard his brother's screams. He was just a minute behind him, a minute too late to save his little brother. That scream that must've tore through him, the sight of Clint bleeding out on the floor.

It must've killed him. And this burden after? After they both survived? This guilt they carry rather its survivors or for what happened or what, they wear it on their sleeves.

I cried so hard with this issue and #19. I love them so much.
