Are the mermaids smaller than one would expect, or are their surroundings unusually large in scale?

In this watch, it as if I was trying to look past the characters and in to the backgrounds. Some of those doors/windows are monstrously tall and the “floors” of their rooms are like trenches. Sure palaces might be large in general, but maybe it’s to allow large sea animals as guests? Like the whale or squid ambassadors?

the animation decline from pearl princess to mermaid power is so sad
