Baneuary Day 2: Prison || @baneuary  Fandom: DC (comics - the image is just there for my own need to match the format of all my other fics) Summary: At the age of six, Bane witnesses his mother’s death in Peña Duro prison.  Warnings: prison riot, violence, angst A/N: I’m behind on the days, but I enjoyed writing this even though it broke my heart a little bit and i wanted to share :)

Even at the age of six, Bane was strong; he spent his days doing labor in Peña Duro with men much older than himself. He learned to never let the guards or the other men in the prison see his pain or fear, otherwise it could be exploited. But at night, he was haunted by his own mind, and neither his physical strength nor his fearsome intellect could ward off the nightmares.
They had started when a particularly grisly man was thrown into the prison cell next to the one he and his mother slept in. The man had a face like stone that had been chipped away at by some careless miner, and his greying beard sprung from his face in uneven patches. His blackened yellow teeth were prominent, not quite covered by the man’s thin chapped lips. Worse still was the way the man’s weepy eyes seemed like they saw everything in the prison, as though he was able to be in multiple places at once and see every egregious sin yet never did a thing.
Ten days after the man arrived at the prison, a riot broke out; it was the worst one Bane had ever witnessed. It started when the prisoners were in the middle of eating lunch, and Bane was right in the middle of the room. Immediately, he was shoved down, his lunch tray clattering and spilling what passed for food in the prison all over the place, and people stepped over and around him as they threw punches. Between countless sets of shuffling legs kicking at bodies, Bane saw his mother at the edge of the room. And beside her was the man, whom Bane had started calling ‘Grisly Gringo’ in his head. His mother’s eyes shone with tears as the man advanced, but she wasn’t looking at him. Instead, she was watching Bane, attempting to get to him.
“¡Mamá!” Bane cried as Grisly Gringo lunged, but it was too late; he had her linen shirt in his hand and pulled. That was the last thing Bane saw before a foot to his head made his world go black.
Bane didn’t know how much time had passed since he was knocked out, but he woke up beside his bruised and beaten mother in their shared cell. Her breaths were shallow, and Bane held her hand as she opened her eyes to speak to him. “Te amo mucho, cariñito,” she said, reaching for his hand. He held her hand as she hummed his favorite lullaby to him one last time before her last coughing, wheezing breath.
When the guards dragged her body out of the cell, fought the guards, and he was able to chase after his mother–just in time to see them toss her body over the cliffs of Punto De Tiburon, where she would be devoured by the always-hungry sharks. He screamed in agony, but there was no resistance left in him when the guards dragged him to solitary that night as punishment for leaving his cell. He cried himself to sleep, singing a teary, broken version of the lullaby his mother sang him at night, allowing the tears to wash his face so that he might wake up the next morning with a renewed determination to escape and one day get revenge on the guards who so callously disposed of his mother’s body.

The January Challenge
Inspired by the “BANuary” movement, I’ve decided to focus on health and give up confectionery and sugary drinks this January. I realised that I had become quite “dependent” on sweet snacks and refreshments. Giving up particular kinds of confectionery or drinks would have been too easy and I would have substituted one with another. Six days in, I’ve definitely had some symptoms of withdrawal with headaches and a bit of lethargy. On the plus side, and yes there is one, I’ve had to think more consciously about what to snack on and pay closer to the ingredients list on drinks. Bring on the next 25 days!
Now, don’t get me wrong...this is not a New Year’s Resolution. It’s just a step to break a bad habit that saw me eat a few pieces of chocolate first thing in the morning.
Here’s my thinking about the answer to “What next?”...
I’m hoping that this will inspire healthier habits. To throw things more towards the ballpark of resolutions, I’m contemplating giving something unhealthy up each month in 2019.
What would you give up in BANuary (or what have you given up?)
Any ideas for future challenges?
Leave your comments and suggestions below!

BANUARY
Well, it is January the 1st, the start of a New Year and a chance for a new beginning. Although, really, it is just another day, to which we apply a lot of abstract significance. But either way, it is significant for me because it is the first day of Banuary.
I've been feeling for a while that I am a bit excessive with my clothes shopping. I have a shopping allowance built into our household budget and I use it every payday. So I buy new stuff all the time. But why? Just because the money is available and I can? Or because I really need all the pretty dresses?
Clearly, the former is the reason, and it is something I feel I need to evaluate. It hasn't been that long in the scheme of things that I have been able to have a shopping allowance in my household budget, so it has taken a while for the novelty to wear off. As a result, I feel like I never get the chance to fully appreciate what I have because I am constantly adding to it.
So Banuary is a chance for me to stop buying unnecessary items for a little while, to appreciate what I have and to evaluate the desire to shop. A group of my friends have started a Facebook event for this, and we are all doing it together. Part of it includes clearing out our wardrobes and getting rid of anything we don't wear anymore - we can swap items if we want to, sell them or give them away. But no buying anything we don't absolutely need, and we will support each other to make sure we stick to it.
This may seem silly to some - hey, it seems a bit silly to me! - but I already feel better for attempting to do something about what has become an almost constant need to buy, almost an addiction of sorts. I don't want to need new things all the time. I'm not saying I will never shop again, obviously, but I do feel I need to take a step back from it all and I think that a month's break will help to combat it a little. And hey, if we can get support for any change we want to make in our life, it can only help, right?
So over the next month I will still post outfit photos - I do have some things I bought in December on their way to me. But I will also try new combinations of things I've worn before as well as drag things out that I haven't worn in ages. It will be a bit of a celebration of the Pretty Clothes wardrobe!
If there is anything you would like to see again, or pieces you would like to see together, or if you just have suggestions for new outfits based on what you've seen me post before, please sing out and let me know! Let's do this thing!
Happy New Year everyone! I wish you all the best for the year ahead.
