Sometimes I just think that Twoset Violin is just an elaborate excuse to psychologically torture world-renowned musicians in front of an audience, like...

The last scene of Chevalier always reminds me of the experience of being at the symphony when Kelela performed in Baltimore with the orchestra – which is something I will hold dear in my heart till I die. A crowd FULL of Black folk breaking every single "rule" about how to listen to classical music (with a couple elderly white symphony regulars sitting down looking bewildered). Everyone dressed to the nines in this ornate historical music hall clapping and shouting and dancing and rushing the stage.

The Shape of Sound
The Shape of Sound Auralism kink, Synesthesia, Hannigram, etc
There is a shape to the sounds he hears. Certain pitches feel sharp, spiky; others soft and round. There are razor edges to threats, a warm giving sensation to kindness. Rudeness is abrasive, like rubbing himself raw with sandpaper and grit. Grace is like velvet, soothing. Clean.
But when he begins speaking to Hannibal, it's like the world goes quiet.
The bright grating neons of sharp-pitched electronic humming go dim. The razor-sharp blades against his skin fall away. All of it replaced with the warm mahogany richness of a Lithuanian accent as comforting and soft as a bearskin rug before a fire and as calming as the low notes of cello and violin.
He finds it difficult to maintain the Doctor's gaze, losing himself in the sounds and experience of his presence instead. Often times he must drag himself back to the present, the rise and fall of threat-edge and double-meanings a ripple across his psyche that he must follow to its natural conclusion.
There is no cymbal-clash here. No too-high flute or irritating piccolo whistles. No ice-cold blues or vision-ruining yellows. Nothing like that can intrude here. Here, in the safety of the old world style study, there is only the kindness of dim light and the string symphony of Hannibal's Voice, leading him back to himself, and then out to sea.
"Where do you go, when we speak, Will?" The question rattles him, at first, before he blushes and looks away. Not quite wanting to explain himself, before it all comes out in haunting, hunted words and side-glance- "I've never heard a voice like yours. I want to break it into its barest pieces, and put it back together." He swallows, winces, considers his next words more carefully. "I want to analyze it, appreciate every curve and bend, every edge and every tangle. You're an orchestra unto yourself. A maestro without meaning to be. I… like the music we make together. It feels like safety. Home."
Hannibal's eyes burn at that, and Will turns his head. Gentle, featherlight pressure turns it back, before Hannibal's surgeonlike precision strokes lightly across his cheek. A caress as gentle as a whisper.
"I do not share your propensity for mixed wires or whatever science may say about the mind's associations between the senses. But Will, whatever comfort you may derive from my presence, I derive as much pleasure from yours. Tell me what you hear. It might be that I can translate it to music, and hear a portion of what it is you are able to sense." The hand retreats, but Will is quick to reach out, grab it back. Tangle their fingers together. "If you would permit the experiment?" Will looks down at their tangled fingers, squeezes gently. Then nods. Hannibal's answering smile is one of quiet, assured victory.
"Very well. Whenever you are ready, then."
~*~ When the music is complete, it is played at the Baltimore opera… and there is not a dry eye in the house.

i am so !!!!!!!!!!!HRJGHGFOGHSFLG SFS
not really lmao its not that serious but YES IT IS AND YES I AM but not really lmao
there's this... ~idea~ in the world of violin pedagogy that You Only Need Very Light Pressure To Make Notes Sound Good, and its
??????????? WRONG LMAO ITS WRONG ITS BULLSHIT AND IT'S BASICALLY THE! ONE! SINGLE! DETAIL! that sets Really Good violinists apart from World Class violinists.
and i get so frustrated because like... people will marvel over the clarity of Hilary Hahn's playing and James Ehnes' playing and basically every legendary soloist to have ever lived. like, there is an AUDIBLE difference between the clarity/purity of the tone quality when Hilary Hahn plays a passage of fast slurs, versus when, idk, joshua bell* or some other Average Player. In hahn's playing, you EXCLUSIVELY hear the pitch of the actual note. In a less refined player's playing, you'll hear brief lil high-pitched choppy noises interrupting the beginnings and endings of many notes.
AND THE REASON WHY HILARY HAHN DOES NOT HAVE THAT PROBLEM IS BECAUSE SHE'S USING! MORE! PRESSURE!
But people be like ~hur dur, if you use Too Much Pressure, you'll injure your joints/tendons~
YEAH THATS WHY YOU HAVE TO TRAIN FOR IT DUMMY!!!! if somebody who's not fit enough to run a marathon tries to run a marathon, they're gonna get hurt! but that doesn't mean running the marathon is inherently dangerous! it just means you have to fucking exercise to prepare for it!
IF YOU GRADUALLY CONDITION YOUR BODY TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF HIGH-LEVEL VIOLIN PLAYING, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN PHYSICALLY DEMANDING TECHNIQUES WITHOUT INJURY!!!!!
and i'm especailly sfghdslfgdgfhdsh right now bc i was looking at a video of some dude (who really is a very good player and who really does have lots of useful advice) offering suggestions on how a player can figure out exactly how much pressure they need to use in order to get a good tone, and when he demonstrates his own ~optimum pressure~, he's like, "now if you listen carefully, you'll hear that i'm getting a pure tone out of all of these notes." and then he proceeds to get a tone that's NOT CLEAR AT ALL!!!! but he seems satisfied with it!!! and so do most of the people in the comments!!
which like, okay, yes, a LOT of very good players do exactly what he did, and nobody thinks they suck because of it, because they don't suck! they sound great!
but they don't win the fucking menuhin competition. they don't become legends. they don't sell out carnegie hall.
they're regular. they're the typical, very solid, very skilled Professional Violinist who can successfully audition for full time professional orchestras, and they can become professors at some decent music schools.
but they're not legends. and if you WANT to even TRY to be a legend, you have to be able to hold a candle to the Hilary Hahns of the world. you have to measure up. and even the teensiest, tiniest imperfection can and does keep otherwise gifted players from reaching the very highest levels of musicianship.
the average player's standard for what constitutes "pure tone" is just???? not high enough. not if they want to be phenomenal.
and i haaaaaaaaaaaate that when i talk about wanting to step my game up and try to eliminate as many tiny errors as possible, people always wanna assure me that it's not necessary, nobody really notices those details anyway.
?????????? THEN WHY AREN'T WE ALL SOLOING WITH THE BALTIMORE SYMPHONY, HMMMMM??? WHY DIDN'T WE ALL GET INTO JULIARD? HMMMMM??? WHY DON'T WE ALL HAVE RECORDING CONTRACTS WITH MAJOR CLASSICAL LABELS??? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM????
IT'S BECAUSE WE'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH! AND WE'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH BECAUSE WE'RE NOT MEETING THE STANDARDS THAT ARE SET BY THE GREATEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD! YOU KNOW!!! THE ONES WHO LEAVE AUDIENCES GOBSMACKED BY THEIR INCREDIBLE PRECISION!!!!!
i know ill probably never reach that level but dammit imma try to get as close as i can anyway.

orchid ⇢ what’s a song you consider to be perfect?
edelweiss ⇢ how’d you think of your url/username? what’s it associated with to you?
jasmine ⇢ do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again?
palm tree ⇢ do you have a fictional villain you shouldn’t like but love regardless?
taro ⇢ if someone called you right now to catch up, what’re the things you’d tell them about?
Orchid: Dreams by the Cranberries! This song fucking slaps, and good god I wish I could sing like Dolores O’Riordan!
Edelweiss: I’m so glad you asked! Gaelic Symphony is a composition by American composer Amy Beach. It’s a really nice piece of music, and it’s also the first symphony by an American female composer ever performed by a major orchestra. To me, it’s associated with women in classical music.
Jasmine: I don’t know if I’ll never watch The Normal Heart ever again, but hoo boy is that an excellent movie that you need at least a week to recover from!
Palm tree: Okay listen, I know she’s a cartoon from a children’s movie, but as a Baltimore girl, I will always have a special place in my heart for Ursula from the Little Mermaid, a character heavily inspired by Baltimore drag icon Divine.
Taro: Oh, fuck, honestly? I’d probably tell them about bar prep, because it has taken over my life at the moment. But I might also find the time to talk about how excited I am to start my super cool lawyer job next month, because I’m going to be practicing housing law, which I love! And then I’d tell them about how Stella ate some ice cream today, and it was very cute.
Thanks for the ask!
