First Impressions: This is a really famous movie that did amazingly on the box office when it released. I’d heard about it. I knew the basic premise of the movie going in so I knew what to expect.
Spoiler-free (with a few hints) Review: The good thing about consuming less famous, ‘flopped’ media is that, more often than not, you walk out pleasantly surprised since you had low expectations walking in. The issue, or rather the burden, of consuming hyped media is that you go in with high expectations and walk out disappointed.
I’ll give it credit for being unique. No movie with this plot exists in the mainstream film industry, which is why it reached the audiences it did. What I disliked though, was that there were a lot of basic clichés that managed to make an otherwise unique plot predictable.
Moreover, it was a bit too long and elongated. For example, Pawan’s entire childhood and college flashbacks could be omitted and it would still be the same story. I’m convinced it was only added in for the laughs. Kareena’s entire character and romance with Pawan could be omitted and it would still be the same story (other than bits of motivation she provided in the first half). Her character was so irrelevant that I don’t even remember her name. There was also no conclusion about Kareena-Pawan: Did they end up together? Was Pawan able to buy a house? Did Kareena’s dad finally accept him? The laziness to bring their story full-circle made me think it didn’t matter to begin with.
Final Thoughts: The highlight of the movie was Munni/Shahida, which is why the final scene managed to make me, and others alike, cry. You’re rooting for her and her mom till the end. It’s an alright movie, just not worth a rewatch.
the sole and devastating problem with monkey man is that it will literally never be able to push past the people who think the concept of the film disrespects hanuman ji to be exposed in an environment where people see it for more than its name.
