The Story

Sunny used to be something akin to royalty. Everyone at Humongous Falls High knew her name. Not in infamy, of course. She was friendly to all she met and incredibly smart. Not to mention charismatic. Sunny felt perfectly at home when she got up in front of the class to give a well-researched and rehearsed presentation, and her energy alleviated at least a little bit of her fellow classmates’ stage fright. There were a few people she may have rubbed the wrong way, being so one-hundred-and-ten-percent at all times, but most folks loved her.

Finding a link between her charisma and her love of sports, she used her position as one of the founding members of the journalism club to become the school’s star emcee. She delivered play-by-play commentary at nearly every home sporting event and hosted a number of schoolwide assemblies, academic or otherwise. The club even put together a sample episode of a televised school news program, but because of the school’s tight budget, it was never fully realized.

After high school, Sunny moved to Cincinnati for college, made the dean’s list, and came back with stars in her eyes for the future. And that’s when her future slowed to a crawl.

Three painful months of unemployment, followed by a couple of menial jobs here and there. Nothing meeting her qualifications. Then finally, finally, she secured herself an internship at Humongous Falls’ local news station KHUF. She couldn’t wait to learn all the ins and outs, dos and don’ts of TV news from actual professionals! Some of which she did learn during the first few weeks, but these days her job mainly consists of being a coffee girl and occasional secretary. Not to mention it’s been over a year, and very few people even remember her name, much less seem ready to offer her a promotion.

That should be her in front of the camera, informing the citizens of her beloved town about all the news that’s fit to print. Instead, she’s just wondering where it all went wrong.

Connections

VINNY GOOCHMAN: Though on the outside they seem like polar opposites, Sunny and Vinny were actually good friends in school, demonstrated when they started the journalism club together. Now that they’ve both graduated and are out facing “the real world,” Sunny hasn’t gotten the chance to catch up with him in a while. She wonders if he’s struggling like she is.

DOROTHY DASHWOOD: Dorothy feels like the only person at KHUF who genuinely wants Sunny to succeed. She’s always clipped and straightforward – that’s just her nature – but sometimes Sunny can detect a bit of softness and guidance from the woman as well.

BUZ KNOWLES: Mr. Knowles was Sunny’s favorite teacher back in high school. They share a mutual unabashed passion for learning. He’s written her multiple letters of recommendation, and they still find time to e-mail back and forth just to check in with each other.
