Thoughts on mythic morality

(Disclaimer/CN: This post discusses such things as depictions of rape, theft, murder, kinslaying and incest. None of what of what I write here should be taken as approval of, or apologia in relation to these acts.) “You look at trees and called them ‘trees,’ and probably you do not think twice about the word. You call a star a ‘star,’ and think nothing more of it. But you must remember that these words, ‘tree,’ 'star,’ were (in their original forms) names given to these objects by people with very different views from yours. To you, a tree is simply a vegetable organism, and a star simply a ball of inanimate matter moving along a mathematical course. But the first men to talk of 'trees’ and 'stars’ saw things very differently. To them, the world was alive with mythological beings. They saw the stars as living silver, bursting into flame in answer to the eternal music. They saw the sky as a jeweled tent, and the earth as the womb whence all living things have come. To them, the whole of creation was 'myth-woven and elf patterned’.” — J.R.R. Tolkien

The above quote is a charming one, isn’t it? Tolkien’s invocation of another way of seeing, of existing, beguiles us with its sense of possibility. It is, like much of myth and story, fundamentally conservative - not in the political sense, but in the conservational sense. As an attempt to preserve, or at least, keep possibilities open in the mind of the reader, it’s pretty good. Of course, the wrinkle is - or some may say - that this took place in the distant past. Nobody, they might say, sees the world like this - or if they do, then their perception is deluded - because we are past that. We see the world representationally now, striving towards accuracy. Anything else is just superstition, is it not?

The mistake these stereotypical straw men make - within the context that I have breathed life into them for - is to suggest that a linear path between “then-now”, and “past-future”. Actually, they make several mistakes, not least because of their unexamined bias. I’ll not elucidate them all here, but suffice to say that our vegetative friends have not considered, amongst other things, the role of the cultural, historical, and philosophical structures which influence how we perceive and know things. In philosophy, such consideration of knowledge and how, why, what, and where we know things is called epistemology. The thing with philosophy is that it covers many things: morality, ethics, metaphysics, linguistics, epistemology, sociology etc. We have words for all these things, and they are often their own disciplines. Philosophy - literally descending from “philia” + “sophia”, meaning affection or love for wisdom - can cover a kind of work in them all them all, precisely because understanding and using what is learnt in these many and varied arenas, and dong so well? Understanding the implications? Knowing that we know nothing for certain and that things are seldom as they first? This is wise, these things are wise, and so: wisdom is the useful, sound, and valuable deployment of knowledge and living life itself well.

Our straw men, conjured into existence by the magic of speech and words - shapings of breath digitized and transmitted across the planet to you, dear reader? They are brought forth into a world where the majority of its unexamined structures descend from the cultural shapings of men with pale skins. Dig further back, and deeper, and you will find that those men re-ordered, restructured and built upon the knowings and experiences of people who were not white or male. The structures of how we perceive, how we know what we know - even how we are taught to think, and express and feel? These did not come from nowhere - unfiltered and whole from the mind of one omnipotent, omniscient, Creator. Rather, many powers and potencies, principalities and agencies act all together. The flows of power, influence, propaganda, social and economic capital; the emotional and cultural response to events and experiences. All of these are contoured and shaped by the many. That many of the pale-skinned men shaped much of our world today is an accident of birth which is then compounded by economic and social factors based on climate, trade routes, geography, resources etc. This acquisition is then compounded and backward rationalized - the accidental conflux of factors becomes a self-justification for ideas of false superiority, which drives behaviours which weight things in the favour of that group. Make no mistake reader - there are still many worlds, even today. Bounded spaces, their boundaries staked out by those with the influence and ability to enforce them. That this is being written by a pale skinned man from North Western Europe is no coincidence. Nor is the fact that many will be able to read this, though my tongue is not what they speak natively - their first words carried a history different to mine. For various reason those people learnt my language which sneaks up behind others and mugs them in dark alleys, or engages in savagely lucrative trade deals. History literally is an accounting what has gone before, thus recounted by those later to be reckoned as accurate sources and authority. It is not all violence, theft and brutality. It is cultural exchange, trade, sharing, incorporation and diffusion also. All these things flow between in flux - this is influence. Influence is often codified and commodified under the rubric of power in an attempt to wield it more universally - which inevitably divorces it from its original context and forces a more acquisitive mindset amongst those who seek it, rather than seeking out points of influential confluence and integrating oneself within that. The orality of history, and cultural transmission, is not something often thought of today. With the advent of writing, information and knowledge conservation shifts to the texts themselves as authority - the metaphor of something being “there in black and white” refers to newspapers, but the sense of it descends from textual authority. Perhaps not so coincidentally, the historic belief structure of those pale people is rooted in a distortion of a heresy of a Middle-Eastern monotheism, which in itself seems been an offshoot of various Middle-Eastern polytheisms. That Judaism has a central authoritative text, leavened with thousands of years of oral and written commentaries and arguments should be noted. That this text was itself an edited version which scholars believe contains multiple texts, and was added to and redacted from, in response to socio-political and religious reasons over time, is also of note. That that text was selectively edited and canonized, before being translated in various languages in response to socio-political and religious reasons over time, is worth further note. That this collage of ancient material is elevated to holy scripture and used as basis for moral authority for the majority of the pale people for over a thousand years, and used as justification for imperalism, rape, murder, theft, oppression, oppression on grounds of sexuality, gender - and was a fundamental source of, and during, the social construction of the concept of race - would be shocking, were it not for the desire for that which is referred to as ‘power’ and ‘authority’. The singularity of authority and power presupposes scarcity. This is to say that fixed, codified protocols of behaviour, perception, and emotional affect allow definition and navigation in an unpredictable kosmos. By structuring experience, we make sense and it is by sense that we structure the world in a feedback loop. In a society based on orality, it is the stories that are told which preserve, iterate upon, and transmit knowledge and culture. In this, it’s worth quoting Marshall McLuhan: “The medium is the message.” What this means is that how a message is transmitted influences the message content and context. Similarly, it is how and by whom-as-medium it is transmitted which influences the message. Oral societies are often conservative in nature - there are ways things are done, and for reasons. Thus, to deviate from that is dangerous, precisely because things are done that way for a reason which benefits certain people. Whether those certain people are an elite or a society as whole varies according to societal structures. Those who deviate are dangerous for several reasons - they are unpredictable, which in many societies at one time meant that they are or were a potential threat. They are non-conformist, which implies they may not honour the social contract which is supposed important in keeping everyone safe and keeping the world-order-as-society knows it running.

Recall Tolkien’s charm? His elder possibility is a world-order or worldview (weltanschauung) which sees the numinosity in all things. It thus sees flux and agency and multiplicity. In the case of polytheism and animism, the multiplicity of agents and powers suggests a multitude of agents all acting on one another and interpenetrating - rather like ripples or interference patterns. Gods and “Big spirits” ( terminology that is pretty much synonymous in the mind of this author for the purposes of discussion) can be said to have mythic “mass”. A large stone dropped into a pond will make bigger ripples and cancel or interfere with smaller ripples generated by smaller pebbles. When considering gods as establishers of world-order - or even creating worlds, it’s instructive to consider that in many mythologies, this is accomplished by the overthrow of a previous order or set of structures, and their reconfiguration. Which is usually, to judge my many world mythologies, a polite way to suggest murder and butchery; fundamentally catastrophic in all the linguistic and etymological senses of the word.. Once bloodily established, it is usually the actions and processes of the gods which keep the kosmos running. This accreted behaviour forms mores. Myth is thus a recounting of these behaviours and deviations therefrom, not simply as dry recounting but as felt experience which stimulates emotional and psychological affect which joins all participants (human and otherwise) into a shared epistemological framework. In any society, the element of performance is key in any media - not just what the media ism but how it does it, as mentioned above. In an oral society where knowledge is shared through speech, whether by poetry or storytelling, the performance of the teller is key, as is the setting and context of the delivery. Many myths depict rape, murder, theft, trade, sharing, incorporation and diffusion. In this, they are as much like other forms of media as anything else. Likewise, it of course is the choice of those personally affected by such things not to engage with such things if they feel it would be detrimental to them. Yet, in dealing with myth, particularly if one views it not as synonymous with falsehood, but in fact expressive of some world-reality which forms the root of of our perceptions and experience, we often have questions of morality. To say that myths containing rape, incest, murder, theft etc “offer a window onto a different time” or to suggest that the actions of a mythological figure are literally representationally true and thus that figure should be hated and despised is to present only a fairly shallow reading in the view of the author. Let us take the Norse god Odin - he who, according the texts we have, committed near- genocide against giant-kind; slaughtering his own kindred the god (along with his brothers) butcher the primeval giant Ymir and use his body to make the worlds. The brothers then create humans by breathing life into two logs/trees found by the sea shore - far better then men of straw, no? He steals the Mead of Inspiration (itself brewed from the blood of a murdered god) after seducing and tricking its giant-maiden guardian, but not before killing nine thralls in order to get close to her father - bearing the name Bolverk (evil-doer). He uses magic to impregnate Rindr after she turns him down repeatedly, making it so that Valli, the agent of vengeance for the death of Balfr, is a product of rape - regardless that he is in the shape of/dressed of a woman at the time. He attempts to have his way with Billing’s daughter, but is discovered and chased away by a pack of angry men. He sets up heroes to die in the midst of battle, abandoning them at the precise moment they need his aid. He is, in short, a major bastard. Did the Norse enjoy stories of rape? Was it a particular genre that pleased them? We have the images of Vikings as raping and pillaging, after all? Certainly, there are texts that suggest they had a different view of sexuality and violence than we do today. But is perhaps our take on Odin in the myths we have had passed down to us heavily biased? Of course. For one, it appears the idea of Odin as chief god in Iceland was due to the preponderance of preserved texts. Archaeology suggests Thor was more popular with the population-at-large than the weird and terrible bastard wizard Stabby McOne-Eye the murder hobo. But Odin is the Master of Inspiration - and both kings and poets were buoyed by his patronage. That this is passed down, collected and written down by a Christian after Christianization of Iceland, and then translated to English, some eight or nine centuries later?

This influences the medium and message. Further, amongst certain neopagans and heathen polytheists, there is a tendency to look at the preserved texts in a similar way to the Bible. This is a product of the mutations of that North West European brand of heresy we mentioned, contextualized in sectarian manner (Protestantism has a lot to answer for). Even if the myths are treated not as literal, we have been culturally contoured to look at myths which describe religious and numinous experience as exemplary. That’s to say, things that serve as examples or moral models, illustrations of general rules. In a sense, that’s akin to looking to police procedurals or popular movies, or 24hr news channels for a sense of morality today. Such things do contain troubling assumptions today - valourisation of violence if it “gets the job done” in movies, or news stories inciting rage for political or social gain as example. Yet their key raison d’etre is experiential affect. Information and mores may be passed on and inculcated unconsciously, yes. But to view their content as explicitly and directly representational without bias? This is surely dangerous. Furthermore, our attitudes to sexuality and violence, both as distinct groupings and how they interplay in all forms of media are worthy of critique - exactly what is acceptable and why? What is the historical and social context for this? So if myth is not to be read as moral exemplar, what then? In this we must engage beyond a surface reading, if we so choose. As method of epistemic transmission and framing, myth is is not exemplary, but does aid in modelling. It is the response to myth that aids modelling not the myth itself. To say Odin is a rapist, a murderer, and thief is important - not because he is, or is not these things, but what that means to the audience participating in the myth, both historically and currently in context. This is why his self-naming as Bolverk is so important, within the context of the myths. Performer and audience and mythic figure all acknowledge this behaviour as unacceptable to humans. Throughout the myth cycle, the “morally dubious” stories illustrate deviance from acceptability is only viable longterm if one is influential, and this motif exists across cultures. There are always consequences for such behaviour, whether it be the dooming of the world, or more subtle responses. Yet they serve a doubly illustrative function in the case of Odin, and other such figures (often Trickster or magical figures) wherein their behaviour and character is ambiguous precisely because of that nature - existing asocially, breaking rules and remaking them, surviving and prospering in impossible ways, in often hostile environments. This renders such figures “unsafe” “criminal” or “unnatural”, perhaps even queer in relation to wider society. For such figures, it is the transmission of this quality via the myth which the narrative preserves, even when preserved and iterated upon by time. In this context, to state again, solely literal representational readings of myth are mistaken. This is not to say it is all symbolic, but rather that metaphor transmits information - an Iroquois story says their people learnt to tap maple syrup from squirrels. An Iroquois boy saw a red squirrel cutting into tree bark with its teeth and later returning to lick the sap; the young Iroquois followed the squirrel’s lead and tried the same technique by cutting into the tree bark with a knife, thus discovering the sweet sap. Long derided as mere “myth” or “folklore” it took until the 1990s for a scientist named Bernd Heinrich to observe and record it, publishing in a scientific journal - thus ‘legitimizing’ pre-existing indigenous knowledge.

That such knowledge only became ‘acceptable’ or ‘real’ when performed outside of its original form tells us much about the biases of so-called ‘Western Culture’ as regards myth and folklore. Yet, this example proves the utility of such transmissions, existing over the centuries. That Iceland’s corpus of myth (even in those tales that remained to be written down) may contain metaphorically encode experience which can be re-experienced through felt-sense is made all the more likely, given the preservation of highly localized folklore and histories. Questions of legitimacy or lack are defined by flows of influence and power - inextricably linked to agency and consequence. Myth is therefore conceivable as a manifestation of currents of social influence and should never be held as a fixed thing, whether or not one has positive or negative emotional response to its figures

The House of the Other

The 7th House is our doorway into others and ourselves. When someone embodies the archetype of our 7th house planets and signs, we react ”[l]ike an epiphany, when the outer image reflects the inner situation, a sudden recognition of something occurs. The divine in us stirs” (Brian Clark, From the Moment We Met: The Astrology of Adult Relationships). In considering all of the questions about the 7th house I receive, it occurred to me that these are really relationship questions. The 7th through 12th houses represent our relationship to the outer world, while the 1st through 6th represent our relationship with ourselves.

The Sun If you were born with your sun in the 7th house, you were born near sunset. Metaphorically, you were hiding away your light to make way for the stars to come out and shine. This analogy is apt in your life -- do not let your partners steal your light; rather, find a way to equally support one another. Watching your partner get all of the light can result in resentment and envy counter-acted by self-absorption and narcissism. These issues are often representative of unresolved father issues and elicit feelings of being unacknowledged or unseen growing up. Seek balance between giving and taking.

The Moon Here, the symbol of caring and empathy for others was setting as you were born and so you often feel the need to hide your own needs and feelings. Themes of dependency and enmeshment often enter into your relationship and while you are looking for interdependence, you often rely on partners to express what you cannot. A moon in the 7th house is often unconsciously looking to recreate situations that mimic the mother figure and reflect conditions from early in life. You may find yourself in relationships where you are too dependent on the other, or the sole emotional provider, and react by manipulating situations to gain what you need. This is a sign that you need to learn to nurture and provide for your own needs before you are able to enter into a truly interdependent relationship.

Mercury In the 7th house, Mercury attracts bright, verbal people who always seem to speak with more eloquence and wit. Your attraction to these kind of people will quickly wane if Mercury isn’t shared, and one partner is always doing all of the communicating. Mercury in the 7th house can represent issues with siblings that are unconsciously recreated in adult relationships. You may find yourself in a relationship with someone just like your sibling. In that recreation, you are working through early themes of feeling unheard or underestimated. Look for a relationship where a true “meeting of the minds” occurs, and you both feel equally heard and valued.

Venus Exalted in the 7th house, relationships come naturally to you. Venus is projected onto the partner, and your partner and friends relish being in the warmth of your harmony and companionship, and eagerly reflect it back to you. Beware that when your love wanes, theirs doesn’t as well -- a sign that your feelings of affection aren’t truly shared. There can also be a tendency to reject anything less than beautiful and refined with this placement -- an indicator of an inability to accept those qualities in oneself. Early issues with close friends and partners where love was one-sided are indicated with this placement. A relationship of equal love and compromise is needed.

Mars Competitive Mars is a bit awkward in the house of coming together. Mars here can attract volatile partners and the anger of others seemingly out of nowhere. Your reactions to anger are likely unhealthy with this placement, and could manifest by projecting power onto the other person, resulting in feeling helpless. Or by becoming overly competitive, seeking to be first and the best at everything. Or Mars in the 7th can result in a quick retreat, preferring to avoid confrontation altogether. In all of these cases, true intimacy is impossible. Isolated, you are unable to see your own role in your partner’s anger, and you ignore your personal desire and determination. Mars in the 7th is often indicative of unresolved issues with male rivals who left you feeling powerless early in life and now you find yourself recreating these patterns through your relationships. You will know your relationship is healthy when you are able to express your desires to your partner and are able to compete alongside and against one another in a spirit of fun and comradery rather than inappropriate rivalry.

Jupiter Jupiter in the 7th relates to others through ethics, philosophy, and spirituality. If your own wisdom has yet to be explored, you may be drawn to self-proclaimed experts who seemingly have all the answers. Gurus, leaders, and teachers of all sorts enter into your life and leave just as quickly. Jupiter in the 7th house is often representative of an early experience navigating unfamiliar territory alone early in life. This scenario is played out in your relationships where you find yourself attracted to those who represent the unfamiliar -- either through culture or social status. Rather than bring your own wisdom and experience to the relationship, your instinct may be to take on the philosophy, wisdom, and world of your partner rather than seeking out your own. However, as you grow into your own worldliness, you become conscious of your inner guru, and find that relationships that allow you to together grow and explore shared meaning work for you. The right relationship will feel expansive and adventurous rather than confining and limiting. You feel able to live your truth.

Saturn Security is sought in your relationships, and you may attract partners that are cold, controlling, and authoritative. A feeling of never being good enough emerges when you are trying to live up to standards other than your own. When you feel constricted in relationship, you may respond by controlling the other person when really you should first seek out a more authoritative position in the world for yourself. Saturn in the 7th struggles with equality. You may feel silenced and dominated by a partner who represents the older and wiser aspects of your soul. Early experiences of criticism may prevent you from entering relationships or you may find yourself easily giving over your authority in exchange for security or status. Once you feel you have control over your position in the world you will be able to enter into the stable and trusting partnership you seek.

Uranus Relationships are unusual and unpredictable with Uranus in the 7th house. Unexpected meetings are commonplace and are external representations of your desire to live unconventionally. Your unconscious will to be unique and original may be rejected in yourself and projected onto the extraordinary and unorthodox people in your life. Not until you address your restless need for adventure will you be ready to take on any kind of commitment. Your need for space is exemplified by Uranus in the 7th, and you often find partners who are more than accommodating and leave you unfulfilled. If they do show up, you find yourself repeating a cycle of engaging and disengaging and then fleeing when you achieve the closeness you desire. Early themes of abandonment emerge in your relationships as you learn how to be authentic, yet separate in intimacy with another. Commitment only comes when you find a relationship that allows for unorthodoxy, individuality, and authenticity.

Neptune With Neptune in the 7th, you may seek the otherworldly and elusive, projecting your innate desire for sensuality, mysticism, and creativity onto your partner. You may also be drawn to themes of rescuing or being rescued, and tend to live out these story lines only in your head. In projecting these mystic qualities onto others, you lose contact with your own spirituality. Neptune loses its identity in rescue/martyr situations and you may find yourself again and again trying to save someone who cannot be saved. Early rescue themes from childhood may emerge as you project fantasy and mythology onto impossible relationship situations. Self-acceptance and examination are needed to address psychological blocks that prevent you from engaging in your inner world. It is only when you are able to draw upon your inner muse and source of spirituality, rather than looking for it in others, that you can enter into the kind of loving and giving relationships you are pining for.

Pluto Your attraction to mystery and intrigue reflects the unexpressed depths of your own emotional states. You may be drawn to intense souls who draw out your deeper, more passionate sides. However, it is in this exchange that you may feel controlled and captivated -- a clear indication that you are giving your power away to a relationship that is unable to be equal or truly intimate. With Pluto in the 7th, you are learning to surface darker and repressed feelings while sharing in representations of power like money and sex. Partnerships elicit dark and uncontrollable feelings in both you and your partner. Undoubtedly themes of betrayal will unleash dark feelings in yourself which you may attempt to ignore and bury. Such inclinations will only result in obsessive and controlling behavior by either you or your partner. Rather than ignore these feelings, Pluto in the 7th house is asking you to risk vulnerability and divulge your deepest feelings to your partner. Only then can you achieve the truly intimate and emotionally deep partnership you desire.

Planetary energies in the 7th are more powerful than the signs they rule, but still apply. The houses where planetary rulers reside also influence the 7th house to some extent.

PREMISE: Priya Daly receives instructions to steal back an old belonging of the Black Dahlia’s. The only catch is it currently lives in President Sutton’s office.

So, this kind of feels like a load of bullshit. For almost three months, Priya has been waiting to hear back from the Dahlias, wondering just how intense this whole sisterhood was going to be. She’s been anticipating the next step after feeling this big suspense from that very first meeting. Maybe they’d have her try to solve a mystery, or break herself out of some escape room. The note that finds her in the middle of December isn’t what she’s expecting at all.

The note explains she has to find some weird old spell book from the Dahlias’ older days, though technically not spells, the book just contains information on herbs and poisons.

To secure your place in the group, retrieve the book in the next 24 hours, and secure The Dahlia’s handed down knowledge.

Are they really witches? is Priya’s first thought, and then quickly her brain realizes that if in 1998, the book was confiscated by the school’s then-current president, then the only place it should be now is Laura Sutton’s office, which is followed by a resounding: Shit…

For all of Priya’s recent irresponsible behavior, she hasn’t actually strayed too far into committing any crimes, and thus, doesn’t exactly have a background in stealing things, especially not from the office of a woman who most certainly knows better than maybe everyone in the building. Maybe this task would have been better suited to a Navigation major, or Covert Operations, or anyone who actually knew what they were doing when it came to breaking and entering. If they had asked her to solve a medical emergency, perhaps she’d be better suited to it. But nevertheless, she’s going to have to try.

Priya only has twenty-four hours, and so she knows she’s not going to be able to learn how to pick a lock (most likely a super-mega-lock) in the allotted time. So, breaking in is certainly out of the question. It would be better, she thinks, to be invited in.

“Do you have a minute, Madam President?” she asks with a smile when Laura Sutton opens the door to her office.

“Oh, please, don’t call me ‘madam’. But, what can I do for you, Miss Daly?”

Priya explains that she’d like some help in learning about her mother, conceding that she’d already tried the library, but due to being a first year, can’t really access any material that might help, and that she felt Laura Sutton might have a good grasp on history or alum at Gallagher.

“I’m not trying to say you’re old, because you look great,” Priya goes on. “You just… sort of seem like an institution yourself. I figured you might know better than anyone.”

President Sutton raises a brow at her, but opens her door wider all the same. “Come in.”

When she steps inside, Priya’s immediately looking around, though she doesn’t think that makes her look suspicious, because getting a first-time look into the President’s quarters is on it’s own, pretty wild, she thinks. Pretty quickly, she spots Laura’s tall shelf, lined with rows and rows of books. Yay.

“So, you said you had some questions about your legacy?” Laura asks, settling into her desk chair.

Priya realizes this was probably not the best route to go, because, well, actually she does want to know more about her mom, and it’s a litter easier than she’d like to tear her attention away from scanning the lines of book titles, and bring it to the kind gaze of Laura Sutton.

“Um… Yeah. I don’t… I don’t suppose you happened to know my mom?” Priya asks as she takes a seat on the other side of the desk.

The president lets out a small chuckle, shaking her head. “I’m afraid I didn’t, and while I do appreciate you thinking I am somehow all-knowing, Im afraid I don’t know quite as much about every legacy family as you might think. But I’m positive I can find a good starting place. If that’s what you’re after, of course.”

She glances one more time at the bookshelf, weighing her options, before turning back to President Sutton with a small nod, her eyes eager. Maybe this is buying time, but as they keep discussing it, Priya feels the clock ticking on her, and she’s not sure how best to proceed. She doesn’t know how to be a spy in this regard.

One thing Priya surprisingly does know is the way some of these Gallagher girls were brought up. And considering there’s a whole floor with her last name on it, Priya can only assume President Sutton fully grew up in this world. She knows how to be a spy, an agent, a trained and calculative mind. But, she also must know the makings of a fine young lady.

“Do you have any tea?” she asks, voice innocent as it can be. “Earl Grey, maybe?”

“Oh– How rude of me, I should have asked. Do you take it with sugar?” Laura responds, quickly rising from the desk, and it’s the only thing Priya could have really predicted out of this whole night.

“No, ma’am,” she answers, eerily and easily falling back into the mannerisms of the girl she used to be, her legs even moving to sit proper in the plush chair opposite the desk.

As soon as Laura’s out of the room, having excused herself to a small kitchenette just a door away, Priya is– rather conspicuously– already up out of her chair and scanning the bookshelf to her left. There are, annoyingly, a lot of books to sort through, and Priya spends most of her time reading title after title, none of which look at all like some sort of spell-book.

Until, that is, her fingers pass by a worn brown spine, the dark lettering on the side hard to make out until she slides the book out of the shelf, and in Priya’s hands, she holds a tome titled The Dahlia’s Book of Shadows.

“Finally,” she whispers with a wide smile, and that’s exactly when another voice speaks up.

“Miss Daly, can I help you with that?”

When she spins back around, Priya notices first that she hadn’t even heard her reenter the room, even though Laura Sutton stands with a silver tray in her hands, loaded with ceramic plates, cups, and spoons, all balancing with the steaming teakettle, her face giving away nothing but calm and composure. Poise, Priya would do well to remember, is needed of both a spy and a lady.

She would have tried to hide the book if it wasn’t obvious enough already, so Priya does her best to appear perfectly normal, an easy grin on her face.

“I’m all good, I was just looking around,” she responds quick.

Laura sets down the tray, her voice sounding both respectably apologetic and effortlessly authoritative. “I hate to say it, but a lot of those volumes are off-limits. Would you mind leaving that where you found it?”

“You don’t check some of them out like the library?” the student jokes, albeit an admittedly lame one.

The president only pours two cups, never losing focus. “Unfortunately not,” she says, then walks over to the younger girl with a perfectly balanced teacup. “If you’d like, we can discuss the contents of this old notebook,” she starts, taking the dusty book from Priya’s hands and placing it back on the shelf before replacing it with another. “Or, I think I’ve found the right place to start when it comes to your mother’s time here.”

Laura Sutton’s face is serene and considerate, not at all accusatory, as she looks at Priya Daly with those same kind eyes. All she wants to do is help this lost girl, who she seems to know would rather learn about the woman she used to love than get caught up in whatever other nonsense is currently plaguing her.

To her credit, she’s right, though Priya takes her time in looking between the two books before ultimately knowing what she’ll choose.

Screw your stupid spell-book, she thinks, then takes the steaming cup from Laura Sutton’s hand, a hopeful grin on her face. She’s too cool for them anyway.

Formal escort: You provided services to wealthy travelers to lead them through unfamiliar lands.

Expedition navigator: You worked with explorers or adventurers to help them reach remote destinations.

Military scout: You served as a guide for a militia or army to familiarize them with the surrounding terrain and give them a tactical advantage.

Camp guide: You worked as an educator, teaching children wilderness survival skills such as plant identification, camping, and trail navigation.

Caravan guard: You helped traveling merchants or performers cross dangerous landscapes and not only helped them find their way, but fended off other threats as well.

Local expert: You offered your services to excavators, archaeologists, or other researchers and scientists as an insider to the region and its people.

Suggested Characteristics: Wayfinders may live in relative comfort and security, but they’re used to the dangers of the wilderness. They may think of nature as a force to be respected, as a problem to be tamed, or as a refuge from the pressure of town life.

I assume cityfolk have never heard of ordinary dangers like bear traps or poison ivy before and treat them with condescension.

I purposely play up a rural ‘hick’ persona because the performance is good for business.

I’ve spent enough time watching the behavior of animals to know they’re usually smarter than people.

I don’t often get to spend time in town because of my work, so when I do have downtime, I play hard to make up for it.

⭐Court cards as people⭐

This is probably the most common way Court cards are interpreted. Often times, they can represent a person in your life--past, present, or future--down to the very last detail. Each of the Court cards has a unique personality type associated with it and I’ll outline those here.

PAGES

Page of Wands: Has a vivid and childlike imagination. A fresh outlook, a thirst for new ideas and a passion for life. Visionary, innovative, courageous and enthusiastic, unafraid of adventure. They welcome change. Seen sometimes as a change agent or catalyst. A faithful lover with almost unlimited passion and enthusiasm.

Page of Cups: Youthful, creative, intuitive. Compassionate, and often highly imaginative. Dreamy; they believe anything is possible, so long as you can imagine it. True romantics at heart. Emotionally vulnerable at times and need affection and attention. A reliable friend who wants to help you and be of service.

Page of Swords: Someone whose mind is running non-stop, looking at things from different angles and trying to understand how everything works. Loves asking ‘Why?’ and every answer leads to yet another “Why?”. It can be exhausting to deal with a Page of Swords personality. Brilliant with keen insight. Communicate well, both verbally and in writing. Natural curiosity fuels their mental activity. May seem silent or withdrawn when they are, in fact, sizing up a situation, gathering information and processing it before they feel comfortable enough to speak. When they do finally talk, they will dazzle you with their newfound discoveries and insights.

Page of Pentacles: Typically represents a youthful and enthusiastic person eager to learn new skills (especially those pertaining to finance and money) and enjoys turning ideas into tangible results. Sees the opportunity and potential in every situation, and finds the best ways to exploit them using available resources. Entrepreneurial and well-suited to the business world. Still in the early stages of learning entrepreneurship and business and hasn’t yet accomplished the results or success of the King or Queen.

KNIGHTS

Knight of Wands: Highly energetic, passionate, spontaneous, action oriented and ambitious. When they have a goal, they’re unstoppable in their pursuit of it. Always on the move as they charge ahead; transient from one place or person to the next. Often times sexually driven, seductive, charming and attractive.

Knight of Cups: Passionate and visionary, warmhearted, loving, and emotional. An imaginative dreamer filled with ideas on how to make things happen. Sees beauty in all things. Takes time with tasks to absorb it all and appreciate. May need gentle nudges now and then to help them stay on track and get the job done. Inclined to decide from the heart and not the head, preferring to trust feelings and intuition rather than logical thought. Charming and romantic and enjoys your company and attention. Emotionally sensitive; wears heart on sleeve. Can get lost in romanticism and forget about reality (will buy you flowers but forget to pay the bills).

Knight of Swords: Restless, full of energy, ambitious and quick thinking. Always doing something to progress their career or other life goals due to a strong desire for action and success (no matter the cost). Wants to take on the world, but may lack the necessary life experience and maturity. Can often be seen as overzealous, blunt, a know-it-all, tactless and rude. May be domineering, forceful, threatening and imposing, and as such is likely to have gathered a fair share of enemies along the way.

Knight of Pentacles: Loyal, patient, committed, dedicated, and meticulous. Approach may be boring, conservative and routine. Reliable. Very much about fulfilling obligations and keeping promises. Dedicated worker and a loyal servant. Likes doing things the traditional way, especially when it’s tried and true, even if this impedes creativity and imagination.

QUEENS

Queen of Wands: Warm, sensitive, gentle and faithful, balanced by strength, determination, courage and persistence. Knows what they want and won’t be swayed from their goals. Independent but has a lot of friends. Center of attention of a large group. Charismatic and enthusiastic. Sensual and attractive to others.

Queen of Cups: Kind, loving and nurturing. A sweet and sensitive nature. Has a kind word for everyone and never reacts with anger or impatience. Good-natured, devoted and honest. A wonderful SO, mother/father, and best friend. Guided by feelings and lets heart lead the way. In tune with the subtle energies of their environment and knows what others are experiencing without having to ask. Trusts their intuition and is more open to knowledge that comes from within and beyond. Responsive and flexible. Willing to adapt and adjust based on the flow of energy.

Queen of Swords: Intelligent, assertive, independent, honest and well respected. Gets to the heart of the matter and tells it as it is with honesty and integrity. Very perceptive and alert to any potential undercurrents or hidden agendas. Should not be underestimated. Quick-witted, with a good sense of humor.

Queen of Pentacles: Honors and values home and family. Nurturing parent, the financial provider, and the supportive boss, all wrapped into one. Practical, down to-earth individual who has created abundance in their life and is now willing and able to share that abundance with others. Pragmatic, smart, financially adept, and well-organised. Generous nature, warm-hearted, affectionate and devoted to the people they care about most.

KINGS

King of Wands: Energetic, charismatic and visionary. May be very entrepreneurial and business-minded. A true leader. Radiates confidence and positive energy. Very creative, self-expressive, domineering, showy, and a smart risk-taker. Has power and influence and knows when to take action. Is in a strong position to get any job done.

King of Cups: Kind and sensitive. Isn’t a push-over. Has a high level of emotional intelligence and uses their understanding of emotional needs and inner self to masterfully navigate relationships with others. Has a positive, balanced and calming influence on others and is always here to help. In a position in life where they can share their wisdom and knowledge with others. Very sociable, loving and sensuous. Has the gift of intelligence combined with strong intuition. Diplomatic and politically correct, skilled at balancing the needs of many people and keeps everyone working together productively. Knows how to show care and sensitivity as a leader. Acknowledges emotional needs and can diffuse a tense situation by reading and responding to the different people involved. Sometimes described as an older male who may show up in your life. A character of business, law or divinity who is considerate and willing to take responsibility for their actions. Paternalistic but in a sensitive, generous manner. Responds mindfully in a crisis.

King of Swords: Intelligent, articulate, authoritative, influential and impartial. Highly qualified and has vast experience and expertise related to their field. Draws upon fact and data to form opinions and then does not let up in proving their point of view. Not exactly an inspiring person but instead prefers to command people who follow them, knowing they trust them and respect their knowledge. Decisions are nearly always the right ones because they see the big picture and never let emotions bias their judgement.

King of Pentacles: No one has a stronger character than the King of Pentacles. True to their word. Reliable, patient, dependable and committed. Whatever they say they will do, they will achieve, often with outstanding results. A true-blue businessperson. Master of the material world. Has a significant amount of experience and knowledge and is, therefore, able to use the money, wealth and power to create security and peace of mind, rather than getting carried away with selfish goals. Often represents a father figure, or a committed partner or devoted friend.

⭐Court cards as a situation⭐

Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense to attribute the Court cards to a person or yourself. Thus, the Court cards can sometimes take on the character of a situation.

For example, the appearance of the Page of Cups often indicates an invitation or an offer that brings a lot of joy and excitement. Or the King of Wands suggests a situation where you are maturing your goals and visions in life.

⭐Court cards as a part of yourself⭐

Sometimes, the Court cards show a side of yourself. A facet of your nature. It could be a part of you that frequently makes an appearance or perhaps it is a side of you that's been neglected.

For example, the appearance of the Page of Wands in a love reading could indicate that you need to be more adaptable to change in the relationship. Or perhaps it's saying that you have already adopted the visionary and imaginative attributes you and your partner need to flourish!

⭐Court cards as a level of maturity⭐

Maturity could be about age, but it's probably more insightful to think of maturity as a state of mind. For example, the Knight who is usually on the younger side, doesn’t have to be under a certain age, but may indicate someone who is just cresting their childlike behaviors and transitioning into full adulthood.

Maturity could also point to different stages of one's life journey. For example, the Page is at the start of their journey and has much to learn while the Queen and King are at or near completion and are now able to share the benefits and knowledge gained.

Summary: 2016: Spencer has just gotten married to (Y/n), the girl of his dreams. The two navigate their new life together as they work through his demanding job and a stalker that just won't leave them alone.

2018: Wendy and Peter have been hiding out in Maine for nearly a year now from Wendy's abusive ex. The two are just starting to settle into the new lives that they hope to spend with each other.

2020: After two years of searching for his missing wife, (Y/n) and Spencer are brought back together again. However, things take a turn for the worse as Spencer realizes that she is no longer the same girl he married.

September 2017

Washington D.C.

“How long do you think we are going to be stuck here?” (Y/n) asked stretching out across the bed that was not theirs. Spencer was sitting in the corner of the room on one of the chairs, a computer sitting in his lap. It was strange to her to see him with a computer, this was a man who refused to use an iPhone after all. They had been at the safe house for a week now and while the first couple of days were fine, she was starting to go stir crazy now.

As per the agreement, the two of them were not allowed to leave the house under any circumstance, everything they needed would be brought to them. So (Y/n) spent most of her days lying in bed while grading papers. She heard from the school who told her to not worry at all about her leave of absence. She wasn’t sure what the team had said to them but she wasn’t necessarily complaining.

“Spencer?” (Y/n) asked, wanting to know an answer. She wanted to go home, sleep in their own bed. This full-size bed was a hard adjustment when you’ve been sleeping in a king for the past year. She imagined it was even harder for him considering that he was so tall he barely even fit on it.

“I’m not sure.” He said, still looking at the computer. “The team is investigating every little thing to try and find this unsub.”

“You still haven’t even told me what he’s done,” (Y/n) whined. “Stalking is kind of vague Spence.” She responded, “most people don’t have to hide out in a safe house from a stalker.”

“It depends on the severity of the case,” Spencer responded. “We are here because it is safer to be here than at our house.”

“You don’t think he knows we are here?”

“I don’t,” Spencer responded. “There has been no indication that he knows we are here which means that he is going to start getting sloppy and that’s when we are going to be able to catch him.”

“And what if we don’t catch him?” She asks. “When do we get to go home if we can’t find him?”

“Let’s not think about that,” Spencer responded.

“Why are you sitting in here to do your work?” She asked him, it was only seven in the morning and she would very much like to sleep longer but the constant tapping on the keyboard worked her up as it had every day in the past. She couldn’t understand why he chose to work in that stiff uncomfortable looking chair versus the nice dining room table just outside the bedroom door.

“I uh,” Spencer said blushing. “I just don’t want to sit out there.”

“Not buying it Spence.”

“It helps my anxiety to watch you sleep.” Spencer spits out “To know that you are safe.”

“Oh,” (Y/n) responded that wasn’t exactly what she had expected although she wasn’t sure why. That seemed very on point for Spencer. “Maybe you can make sure that I’m safe from bed?” she asked and he finally looked up from his laptop screen at the devilish look on her face.

“I guess I could do that,” he responded as he shut the screen before coming over and crawling onto the bed, he tucked himself into the comforter before curling himself around (Y/n) holding her tightly to his chest.

“Oh.” She said laughing as he nuzzled his nose into her hair inhaling the mint shampoo. “That’s not exactly what I had in mind. But this is better,” she said her eyes were already starting to get droopy as she struggled to keep them open. “Promise me you’ll be here when I wake up?” She asked out of nowhere.

“Promise.” He responded by pressing a kiss on the top of her head. “Just go back to sleep baby.” She nodded as she finally gave in and let her eyes close. The last thing she remembered before she closed her eyes was a soft knock at the front door. If Spencer heard it, which she knew that he did, he made no effort to move. Rationally she knew that he would leave her the second she fell asleep but then again he promised that he would be here when she woke up and he wasn’t one for breaking promises.

September 2018

Bar Harbor Maine

Wendy and Peter were sitting on the couch, her mind still reeling from the event earlier this week. Seeing Spencer again had unearthed all sorts of new memories that she didn’t even know she had been repressing. She had spent the last few days just thinking about every moment of their relationship, every time she felt fear, she felt small, vulnerable. The way that he made her feel like she was nothing. So different from the relationship that she currently had with Peter.

While the whole conference had been painful for her to watch the part that really stuck with her was the way that he promised to find her. His words had been ringing through her heart ever since. He was never going to let her go. He was going to find her and when he did he would probably end up killing her she thought to herself. Looking back there are so many memories where she was convinced he was going to kill her. Sometimes the rage in his eyes, when he came home from a rough case, put the fear of God into her.

And then there was Spencer after prison. When she remembered the time he spent in prison she was relieved, to say the least. In her memories that was the only time that she felt completely safe in their home. It would’ve been a good time to leave him, she thought to herself. She would have packed up and hit the road but there was still the fear that he would get out, find her and then be even more pissed. So for that time period, she played the part of the good girlfriend, she visited him in prison, told him how much she missed him, called the team for updates, wrote letters, promised him she wasn’t going anywhere. At night she slept in his shirts and cried herself to sleep-wait, that can’t be right she thought. She didn’t cry behind closed doors. Why would she? Yet there was this really painful memory of waking up sobbing and reaching out for him only to realize he was not there. Wendy shocked her head, that was made up in her mind, she had some wires crossed and was remembering something else. That had to be it.

“Do you remember the first day we met?” Wendy asked Peter all of a sudden as he stopped flipping through channels.

“Of course I do.” He responded by settling on the national news channel. He watched it almost every night just in case there was an update on her case, he said he had to make sure they were not getting too close. “I just remembered laying eyes on you and thinking you were the most beautiful thing in the world. The more you talked the more infatuated I became. I found myself wondering who you loved and then I was jealous that it wasn’t me.”

“I love you now.” She responded.

“I know darling,” he said back. “But I remember you sitting us down at your desk and I just knew there was something wrong. The way you winced as if you were in pain as you sat down was the first clue I had. And then I started taking more of you in and I saw the bruises all over you and I just knew that someone had been hurting you. You told Aimee that you had just gotten engaged to an FBI agent and there I had my answer. You were clearly being abused by someone way more powerful than you, but he wasn’t more powerful than me. I had to save you. I just had to.”

“I’m glad that you did,” Wendy responded as Spencer’s voice filled the room again. She snapped her attention to the tv where the same press conference was being aired again. Peter immediately muted it not wanting either of them to hear his voice. Peter then reached over to Wendy pulling him into his chest to shield her from watching as well.

Wendy peeked from behind him watching Spencer walk off the stage as another familiar figure walked on. She immediately sat up despite Peter trying to pull her back. “Unmute it,” she said and Peter gave her a warning look. “I said unmute it.” She demanded this time, her voice much more authoritative than she had expected.

“No,” Peter responded just as strong. “I think that you should go to the other room.”

“No,” Wendy said back. “Unmute the fucking television or I swear to God Peter,” Wendy said, glaring at him. “I can handle this.

“Wendy.”

“Peter. Do not fucking test me.” She wasn’t sure where this level of confidence was coming from but it seemed to be working as Peter handed her the tv remote. She immediately unmuted it just in time.

“My name is Louise Hill,” Louise said confidently into the microphone much more confident than Spencer had sounded. Wendy watched the screen not daring to take her eyes off of it for one minute scared she might miss something. She had left too early from the supermarket to see Louise talk. Louise was the one she had begged Peter to let her send a letter to. She would’ve understood and kept it a secret. She would've done anything for her.

“Like you heard Dr.Reid say a few minutes ago, we are here as we are still searching for (Y/n) Reid. I was asked to make a statement about (Y/n) and her impact on the community in hopes of humanizing her to whoever has her. (Y/n) is my best friend and I miss her very much. For those of you who don’t know, (Y/n) is a fourth-grade teacher here in D.C. Every kid who she has taught loved her to death. The amount of cards that are piling in from elementary kids is just heartbreaking.” Louise took a second to compose herself. “There is one student specifically who’s mom actually reached out to Spencer as this student was so heartbroken of (Y/n)’s disappearance.”

“Anna,” Wendy muttered before she could stop herself.

“What’s that?” Peter asked.

“Anna. That’s the student she’s talking about.”

Louise continued without a pause. “(Y/n)’s sister in law, Sonya, just had a baby,” Louise said and Wendy nearly gasped out loud. For so long Sam and Sonya had been having trouble conceiving, she was so happy that they were able to have a kid. “A baby that will never know their amazing aunt unless you let her go,” Louise said now speaking directly to the person who held (Y/n) which Wendy had to stifle a laugh about considering that he was sitting right next to her.

“If you’re listening to this.” Louise continued. “I want you to know that you’re not going to get away with this. Spencer’s team is the best unit of the FBI they will find her. (Y/n) if you are by some chance listening to this, I want you to know that there are tons of people looking for you. We all love you so much and just want you to come home. No matter what kinds of horrors you lived through this past year we will still love you. I promise you that. You can come home unharmed or shattered to pieces and we will be there to help you either way. Just come back alive. Please. ” Louise concluded as the tv screen went back to the national news.

“She has no idea,” Peter said.

“No idea what?”

“How bad it was for you being in that marriage. She thinks that you’re living through horrors now she should’ve opened her eyes when you were right there in the city. She doesn't deserve you.”

Wendy was silent as she listened to the newscaster recount the details of her abduction. “Wendy?” He asked and then she noticed that she was shaking and tears were silently streaming down her face. “What’s wrong baby?”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I was just remembering what happened in that warehouse.”

“It’s okay,” he said, taking her back into his arms. “I know that was terrifying. I thought that you were dead when I found you slumped over in that chair. That level of torture was just inhumane, which is why I am never going to let him find us. You will never have to go back to him.” Peter whispered. “What do you say we go to bed?”

Wendy nodded letting him pick her up off the couch and take her to their bedroom. He laid her down on the bed tucking her in before crawling onto his side. He then pulled her over to him so that her head was resting against his chest.

“Do you think that I will spend the rest of my life living in fear of him?”

“Maybe,” Peter responded honestly. “But like I said before he will never lay another hand on you. As long as I am alive he can not hurt you. I am the only one who can keep you safe.”

��I know,” Wendy said. “I’m just tired of constantly having flashbacks to that night.”

“I get it,” Peter said. “But you can’t just get over that kind of trauma, we just have to learn to live with it. Which is where I come in.”

“Thank you,” Wendy whispered to him. “Thank you for always taking such good care of me.”

“Of course.” He responded.

“Promise me you’ll be here when I wake up?”

“I promise.”

“Promise me you’re okay?” Louise asked standing in front of the mirror admiring herself in the large wedding dress.

“I’m fine Louise. Better than fine. I’m doing good.” (Y/n) said. “You look so gorgeous. Derek is so lucky.”

“I’m so glad that you made it home in time for this. I was never going to get married without you. But seriously (Y/n) if it gets to be too much with him here you can back out I won’t be mad.”

“It’s okay Lou,” (Y/n) said. “Things are getting better. Talking to him on the phone has done wonders.”

“Okay but seeing him here might be hard. He’s the best man and you're the maid of honor, that means you’re going to have to walk down the aisle arm and arm and you haven’t seen him face to face in so long.” (Y/n) smiled down at the floor and a small blush on her cheeks. “What? What aren’t you telling me?”

“I may have gone to the park with him a few weeks ago because I knew this was coming up. It’s going to be fine Louise I promise. I’m not freaking out externally when I see him anymore. Internally still a little, but when we are surrounded by people my brain calms down, he can’t hurt me surrounded by people. But enough about this, this is your wedding, let’s not talk about me.”

“Okay,” Louise said smoothing out her dress one more time.

“Are you nervous?” (Y/n) asked.

“Incredibly.”

“You have nothing to be worried about. It’s going to be a great night.” (Y/n) said, taking Louise’s hands in hers.

“I know,” Louise responded. “It’s just that my dad is freaking out because mom brought her new boyfriend even though I told her she did not have a plus one and she could not bring him. He’s such an asshole I don’t even want him here.” Louise said, already starting to get teary-eyed.

“Hey,” (Y/n) said. “Don’t cry okay. Why don’t I go out there and ask him to leave? Would that make things better?”

“Oh my gosh yes,” Louise said, trying to hold back tears so as to not mess up her makeup.

“Alright, I’ll be right back.” She said stepping out of the small room inside the bridal suite. She told the other bridesmaids where she was going to go while asking Grace to keep an eye on Louise to make sure she doesn't start crying.

(Y/n) headed out into the church to try and find Daphne, Louise’s mother. It wasn’t really all that hard as she was sitting in the front row of the church bickering with Louise’s dad, Charles. “Hey, Daphne?” (Y/n) asked as she approached the two of them.

“Oh my gosh, (Y/n)!” Daphne said standing up and pulling the girl into a bear hug. “It is so great to see you. You had me so worried there for a while.”

“Join the club,” (Y/n) responded. “But I’m actually here to ask about your boyfriend?” Charles scoffed at the word but (Y/n) chose to ignore him. “Louise said that he was not invited.”

“Yeah,” Daphne said. “I asked for a plus one but she said no”

“Okay, then why did you bring him?”

“Because I thought it was a little snotty of Louise to not give me a plus one,” Daphne said and (Y/n) was reminded all of a sudden why she seriously disliked Daphne. She was one of those people who just thought that they were entitled to everything.

“Well, him being here is really stressing Lousie out,” (Y/n) said, hoping to get Daphne to sympathize with her daughter who was almost in tears back in the bridal suite.

“What?” Daphne asked. “I’m just supposed to ask him to go all the way back to Georgia?” We drove together.”

“There are plenty of other things to do in the city. I can even buy him a metro card so he can go wherever.”

“Well that’s really kind but he’s going to stay.”

“No, he’s not,” (Y/n) said growing angry, not only at Daphne for putting Louise in this situation but partly at Charles who was just standing by idly.

“If you want to tell him to leave then have at it but he’s got quite a temper, so I wouldn’t suggest poking a sleeping bear.”

“I’m not scared of some five foot five guy from Georgia who drives a massive pickup because he’s got something to prove to the world.” (Y/n) spatted back to Daphne. “Besides do you really want to be going out with a guy who you know has a temper?” (Y/n) asked before walking away in the conversation, not wanting to give her a chance to respond.

“He’s out smoking!” Daphne called after her.

(Y/n) stormed out of the church without a second thought. It wasn’t hard to find Adam outside. He was one of three people but he was the only one not dressed for a wedding. Instead, he looked like he just came off the farm. He was wearing dirty jeans, a plaid shirt which he had unbuttoned with a dirty white undershirt. As she approached him, she realized that he was out here doing spitting tobacco. This guy was way too young to be dating Daphne, he couldn't have been but ten years older than her and Lousie.

“Adam?” She asked as she approached him.

“Yeah what’s it to you?” He asked, glaring at her.

“I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

“Leave?” He asked spitting out on the ground making (Y/n) gag slightly.

“Yes,” (Y/n) responded. “You can’t be here.”

“I drove all the way here from Georgia and now some Yankee is going to tell me I have to leave?”

“Okay, I’m actually from Georgia too,” (Y/n) said, offended by the term Yankee. That was the first time anyone had ever used that term to describe her. Spencer always said she was his southern belle. Hell, she even still had a little bit of the accent. Not like Adams, but it was still there. “And yes I am telling you to leave because you weren’t technically invited. There are plenty of things to do around the city while you are here.” (Y/n) said.

“I’m not leaving,” Adam said stubbornly.

“Yes, you are,” (Y/n) responded.

“I came here with the bride's mom, I have every right to be here.”

“Not if the bride did not invite you, which she did not.”

“If you want me to leave, you’re going to have to drag me out of here,” Adam said before looking down and spitting right on her open-toed high heels. (Y/n)’s mouth fell open immediately as she stared down at her foot. “You should close your mouth, or else I’m going to be tempted to put something else in there,” he said with a smirk.

(Y/n) started to raise her hand before someone grabbed her arm. She started to scream at the person who grabbed her when she turned around and realized it was Spencer. He quickly dropped her arm once he was sure that she was not going to hit Adam. Then he quickly took a stance between her and Adam, a protective arm thrown behind him to stop her from lunging.

“Is there a problem here?” he asked in a tone that she had never heard him use before. “Because it looks to me like you're sexually harassing a bridesmaid.”

“Sexually harassing.” Adam scoffed. “She just tried to attack me, I was minding my own business when she came out here and said I couldn’t be at this wedding because I wasn’t invited.”

“If you weren’t invited then you have to leave. And I would recommend that you leave before I have you arrested.”

“Arrested for what?”

“Trespassing on private property. And I’m guessing if you were to be arrested and they were to get a warrant they would probably find all sorts of illegal drugs in your truck.” Spencer said, sniffing the air. “Marijuana for sure, and I think I’m smelling just a little bit of meth.”

“No cop is going to come down here for that.”

“You’re right,” Spencer said, moving his suit jacket to show his badge. “They are already here.”

Adam turned white as a ghost put his hands in the air. “Alright.” He said slowly backing away. “I’ll leave. Tell Daphne that I’ll be back at the hotel,” he said before turning around and leaving. They watched as he got into his dirty truck and sped off away from the church.

“I could’ve handled that on my own,” (Y/n) said, turning to face Spencer. “You didn’t have to come ‘save the day”

“You were about to assault someone with no probable cause,” Spencer responded. “Had you hit him you might have been looking at an assault and battery charge. That probably would’ve ruined Louise’s night.”

“You heard what he said to me,” (Y/n) said. “Look at my fucking shoe.”

“Yes, I heard and saw it all,” Spencer said. “And I wasn’t going to get involved until you raised your hand. I know that you are more than capable of taking care of yourself (Y/n). I just don’t really want to see you be taken away in the back of a police car. Let’s go inside.” he said changing the subject. “It’s cold out here.”

(Y/n) followed him back into the building staring daggers into his back, he should have let her hit him, he had it coming. Without even realizing what she was doing, she followed Spencer into a single-use bathroom. “Sit.” He commanded patting the counter.

(Y/n) took a deep breath before climbing on the counter. He was not going to hurt her she told herself over and over again even though a part of her brain was screaming the opposite. “Is this okay?” He asked about the two of them to be alone in a bathroom. (Y/n) nodded once before she had time to start overthinking. Abigail had said it would be good for her to start spending some one on one time with him. She had told her to keep it simple, dates at restaurants not go back to his place. She could handle this she thought to herself as Spencer grabbed a paper towel and started to wipe the tobacco off of her shoe.

“For the record,” he started. “I wanted to hit him myself.”

“I’m glad that you didn’t,” (Y/n) whispered.

“Me too.” He responded. “Partly because I could’ve been charged with assault and battery then but mostly because I think the last thing you need to see is me hitting someone.”

“Yeah,” (Y/n) said with a bitter laugh. “That would kind of reinstate the whole ‘he was hitting me thing.”

“Right.” Spencer agreed, laughing slightly with her.

“Thank you,” (Y/n) said after he had all the tobacco off of her shoe. “I should get back to Louise though.”

“Yeah, I should get back to Derek too.”

(Y/n) turned to the bathroom door about to open it when she stopped. “Thank you, Spence.” She said. “I appreciate you helping me with him even if I was a little mad in the heat of the moment.”

Spencer only nodded as she left the bathroom and headed back to Lousie to let her know that Adam would not be an issue for the rest of the night. (Y/n) glanced down at her phone noting that there were only 15 minutes left until the actual ceremony was supposed to start, it was getting down to crunch time.

“I would’ve let her hit him, to be honest,” Derek said after Spencer recounted the whole thing to him. “Adam is an asshole.”

“I gathered,” Spencer said glancing down the watch it was time for the ceremony to start. “Are you nervous?” Spencer asked as they all made their way outside.

“Nah,” Derek responded. “Just happy.” Spencer smiled patting Derek on the back before he took his place at the altar.

Slowly all the groomsmen and bridesmaids made their way down the aisle until it was only Spencer and (Y/n) left. “You look beautiful,” Spencer said to (Y/n).

“You don’t look too bad yourself,” (Y/n) responded blushing down at the ground. They were still standing a respectful distance from each other and Spencer wondered what was going through (Y/n)’s mind right now.

“You know we don’t have to go arm in arm if you don't want to. No one would even notice.”

“Thank you,” (Y/n) responded. “But they would notice, we would look weird and it’s a short little walk. I’ll be okay. You have to stop walking on eggshells around me if you ever want things to go back to normal.”

“I know it’s just that-”

“This is not the time to be having this conversation,” (Y/n) said cutting him off knowing that any second now they were going to have to walk. And just like that, they were motioned forward. Spencer held out his arm for her and she loved hers into his, sushing voice in her brain.

The two of them made their way down the aisle and (Y/n) only focused on putting one foot in front of the other. She ignored how natural it felt to have his arm in hers as best as she could. Like she had told him before, right now was not the time for that.

At the end of the aisle, she took her spot at the altar and watched as Louise floated down the aisle. She looked absolutely breathtaking, she thought. Once Louise made it down to the altar, she handed her bouquet to (Y/n).

As Rossi started speaking (Y/n) allowed herself to zone out, she didn’t really mean to it was just that a part of her brain was short-circuiting from the close contact she had with Spencer. She was starting to warm up to him again. Talking every night on the phone really has done wonders. On the phone it’s almost like things are back to normal, she lets him ramble about anything and everything and he asks her about her day and genuinely seems to care. It’s almost like they are sitting at home on the couch still.

Even the other day when the two of them went to the park, it was hard at first but the longer they were together the more comfortable she began to feel. It was like when they weren’t together her brain was convinced he was abusing her but then when they got together it became so obvious that this man did not have it in him to hurt her.

He loved her so much that it almost made her sick.

(Y/n) focused back in when she heard Rossi say “you may now kiss the bride.” She smiled and clapped along as everyone else in the church erupted into applause. She watched the two newlyweds walk down the aisle to go outside and take pictures before heading to the reception.

“Wake up baby,” Spencer said shaking (Y/n) awake.

“What’s going on?” she asked groggily.

“They made an arrest!” Spencer said sitting down on the bed next to her.

“We get to go home?” (Y/n) exclaimed.

“We do,” Spencer said as (Y/n) reached across the mattress to grab him and bring him into a breathtaking kiss. “You’re really excited to go home huh?”

“You have no idea,” (Y/n) responded, jumping up from the bed squealing as she grabbed all of her stuff and started stuffing it into her duffle bag that she had to pack at the last minute. It took about twenty minutes before she was sitting in the driver's seat of her car with Spencer in the passenger seat. “Who was it? How did they catch him?”

“About that.” Spencer said staring out the car window refusing to make eye contact with his wife.

“Spence,” (Y/n) said. “Just tell me.”

“He was a coworker of yours.”

“What?” (Y/n) yelled. “Who?”

“Scott Tidwell,” Spencer said.

“No,” (Y/n) said her mouth falling open, she pulled over onto the side of the road putting the car into park. “Scott was so nice to me.” She said. “He wouldn’t have done this.”

“He was infatuated with you (Y/n),” Spencer responded. “He had pictures of you all over his hard drive. He had a key to our house somehow.” Spencer said.

“What?”

“I didn’t tell you earlier because I didn’t want you to panic, but we found tons of cameras hidden around our house, he had been watching us for a long time.”

“Oh God,” (Y/n) said. “I’m going to be sick.”

“I know,” Spencer said.

“How long did you know about this?” She questioned turning to him the anger evident not only her voice but also her eyes. How could he keep this from her, there were pictures of her on her coworkers laptop because apparently he was sneaking into their house to plant cameras. “Where were the cameras?”

“Pretty much everywhere,” Spencer responded. “And the second that we found all the cameras, we took them all out. I did not know until the day we left.”

“Where are they in the bedroom?” (Y/n) asked swallowing as she thought about everything she and Spencer had done in the bedroom that someone else might have been watching or have photo evidence of.

“No,” Spencer lied. “We think that he probably didn’t want to see you with me.”

“Okay,” (Y/n) said, feeling slightly relieved. “How did they find him?”

“He was using a key to break into our place which they were monitoring. When he got in and realized that Morgan and Prentis were there, he drew a gun.”

“He died didn’t he?” (Y/n) asked and Spencer only nodded. “On our living room floor?” Spencer nodded again and (Y/n) put her head in her hands trying to process all this information. “I think that you should drive.” She said after a moment. Spencer reached out and took (Y/n)’s hand giving it a quick squeeze before the two of them traded places.

Spencer drove the rest of the way home in almost complete silence as (Y/n) tried to think through everything he had just told her. Scott had always been so nice, it was hard to believe that he would escalate to breaking into her home to plant cameras.

After about ten minutes, Spencer pulled into the parking spot for their apartment before turning to her. “Ready?”

“Is it going to look like a crime scene?”

“No,” Spencer responded. “It’s going to look the exact same way that we left it,” he said as the two of them got out of the car and headed inside their home. Like Spencer had said it looked the exact same that they left it but there was a very distinct smell of bleach that made it hard to forget what had happened in here.

Spencer took her hand leading away from the crime scene and back into their bedroom, the sun was starting to set in the sky and there were both ready to just lay down in their own bed and maybe get a good night’s sleep, although for some reason that really didn’t seem possible as (Y/n) imagined all the places in which cameras might have been put.

After changing and doing her nightly routine and unpacking her stuff, (Y/n) laid down in bed followed soon by Spencer who immediately pulled her into his arms. “What if we take a mini-vacation?” He asked.

“We just got home from a mini-vacation,” (Y/n) responded turning over in his arms to face him.

“No, but I mean one where we could actually relax.”

“Didn’t know that you knew how to relax.”

“You’re a bad influence.” He said and they both started laughing.

“Where would we go?”

“I don’t know, five days in Punta Cana”

“You?” (Y/n) asked, reaching up to trace his jaw. “In the Dominican?”

“I know,” he replied. “But the idea of just sitting on the beach and reading all day kind of sounds relaxing right now.”

“Who are you and what have you done with my husband?” (Y/n) asked.

“Oh hush,” Spencer said reaching up to grab her hand and intertwine their fingers. “We went somewhere cold for the honeymoon and I know how much you like the beach, so I can make it work for five days. I want you to be happy.”

“You book everything and I’ll go,” (Y/n) responded smiling to herself at the idea of spending five days at the beach with Spencer.

Spencer smiled back as (Y/n) shifted in bed trying to get more comfortable. She gently laid her head on his chest, her red hair sprawling out all over him. He silently ran his hands through it sighing softly to himself.

“What are you thinking?” She asked him after about twenty minutes when all he had been doing was braiding a section of her hair over and over again. “It’s unusual for you to be this silent.”

“Promise me you won’t ever change your hair.”

“What?” She asked laughing “That’s so random Spence.”

“Sorry.” He responded. “I just really love it.”

“I’ve never dyed before, I don’t plan on starting now.”

“Good.”

Washington D.C.

(Y/n) sat at the main table watching as everyone danced on the dance floor. She smiled slightly to herself watching Derek and Louise, they were going to be so happy together, she could just feel it. The way they radiated when they were around each other was unmatched.

Getting up from the table, (Y/n) headed over to the bar ordering a drink before making her way over to JJ and Emily who were waving her down. It was a good thing she stopped for the drink first she thought to herself. “Hey!” Both girls exclaimed as she made their way to them. JJ started to stand to give her a hug but clearly thought better of it. “How have you been?” she asked.

“Okay,” (Y/n) responded, licking her lips feeling slightly awkward. She had not talked much to Spencer’s team since she had been back. At least not besides Derek. “How have you guys been?”

“Pretty good,” Emily responded. “Please sit down.” (Y/n) hesitated for a moment before deciding it would be rude not to. Abigail had told her that she needed to readjust herself to her old life as much as possible and this felt like another step in the right direction.

“How are Will and the kids?” (Y/n) asked JJ.

“They’re doing great.” She responded. “Henry is in kindergarten, he’s really looking forward to first grade.”

“I’m sure,” (Y/n) responded. “He’s at that age where he just can’t wait to grow up.”

“Right,” JJ responded. “It’s exhausting.”

“Anyone new in your life Emily?” (Y/n) asked.

“Sadly no.” She said. “I’m not really looking though.”

“Ah,” (Y/n) said nodding not really sure what else to say when all of a sudden Penelope came running over to the table grinning at (Y/n). “Oh, God.” She whispered under her breath as JJ and Emily laughed.

“Gorgeous.” She said to (Y/n). “Come to dance with me.”

“Oh, I don’t really-”

“I am not taking no for an answer,” Garcia responded pulling (Y/n) to her feet. (Y/n) decided to just give in and go dance with the girl as that was easier than trying to explain that being on a crowded dance floor kind of filling her with unnecessary anxiety. Still, she followed Garcia out to the dance floor to dance to the song that the DJ was playing.

“I’m so glad that you decided to stick around,” Garcia said and (Y/n) raised an eyebrow wondering why they thought that she wouldn’t. She was the maid of honor after all. “I heard that you almost got into a fistfight with someone outside.”

“You did?” (Y/n) shouted over the music. “From who?” Garcia’s glance over at a table where Spencer was now talking to Rossi and Hotch gave her the answer she needed. “You should’ve heard him telling us about it.”

“Oh gosh,” (Y/n) said groaning. He was probably going to tell Abigail that she was resorting to violence now to solve her problems.

“It’s not bad,” Garcia said. “Oh my gosh, he was so proud of you.”

“What?” (Y/n) asked, stunned. “Proud? I nearly punched a guy.”

“I believe his exact words were ‘my badass wife,” Garcia said and (Y/n) couldn’t help but laugh. In all the years she spent with him, she could probably count on one hand the number of times the man has sworn.

“I can’t believe he said that,” (Y/n) said. “He seemed pretty pissed at me, to be honest.”

“No,” Garcia said. “He wasn’t mad at you, I think that he was mad he didn’t let you hit him or at the very least that he didn't hit him. But he can’t blame himself for that, but he was not mad at you.” (Y/n) nodded, she felt this strange feeling in her chest at the idea that he thought that she was a badass even after all this time.

Her and Garcia danced around for a little bit longer before the song changed into a slower song and they exited the dance floor, (Y/n) went back up to where the wedding party was sitting at a large table in the front of the room. She watched as all the happy couple swayed back and forth to the slow song that the DJ had chosen to play. As she watched the dancefloor, she allowed her eyes to scan the rest of the room, finding landing on Spencer who was standing over in the corner of the room.

Taking a deep breath, (Y/n) decided to be bold as she walked over to him. Badass she reminded herself as she approached him. A part of her started screaming the closer she got to him that this was a terrible idea but her feet continued to move anyways. When she got close enough to him that he noticed her, she watched his eyes light up in surprise and adoration. “Do you want to dance?” She whispered looking down at the floor. After a moment she looked up at him and he nodded once. She reached for his hand before she could stop herself walking the two of them over to the dancefloor.

They picked a spot over to the side where they were out of the way and where the majority of the wedding guests could not see them. Slowly (Y/n) raised her hands to be around his neck while he hesitantly found their way to her waistline. “You look so pretty,” he whispered as the two of them swayed to Perfect by Ed Sheeran.

(Y/n) didn’t say anything. The voice in her head that was telling her to run was a lot quieter than it usually was. His hands that were on the small of her back were practically burning a hole into her dress and she was convinced that by the time this song was over she was going to have to go to the bathroom and wipe away buckets of sweat.

“You’re okay,” Spencer whispered realizing the inner monologue that was going through her head right now. “You’re perfectly safe.”

She nodded once taking a deep breath. “I heard that I am apparently a badass.” She told him she wanted to take the conversation off of the past and focus on how they might be able to make this work for the future.

“You are.” He responded. “Your strength and resilience amaze me.” (Y/n) snorted at that not believing him at all. “I’m serious (Y/n),” Spencer said his voice low in her ear. “After I got kidnapped for 72 hours I ended up addicted to drugs. You’re gone for two years and yet you’re still standing here, conversing with people who you feel you no longer know and dancing with the man who you believe was abusing you, trying desperately to get your old life back. I don’t know how you do it. I really don’t. So yes I think you’re badass, you are the strongest woman I know and I used to work with a bunch of really strong women.” They both laughed at that as the song changed to another slow song.

“That means a lot to me,” (Y/n) responded honestly. Spencer nodded moving a hand from the small of her back to tuck some loose strands of hair behind her ears. “You hate it don’t you?” she asked him tears starting to spring to her eyes for some reason which she did not understand. She blinked them away as quickly as she could hoping that he did not notice it.

“No.” He responded shaking his head.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not lying (Y/n).” He responded. “I don’t hate it, it’s hair.”

“You made me promise to never change it.”

“I don’t care about that anymore. You can die it bright blue for all I care, as long as you are still within arms reach.”

“I heard you crying about it in the hospital.” she said bittelry.

“You thought I was crying about your hair color?” Spencer asked before bursting out laughing. “I was crying because for two years I had no idea if you were alive or not. The hair color was just a shock to me because you looked nothing like the girl I lost. That’s why I asked.”

“I wish it would go back to normal,” (Y/n) said. “Every time I look in the mirror I cringe, I still don’t even really recognize myself sometimes. I asked a hairstylist about dying it but she said it’s so black that it would be a multi-step process and that I would do significant damage to it. So now I just have to wait until it grows out.” (Y/n) said bringing one hand to touch the roots where they were starting to grow back as red. She wrinkled her nose imagining just how bad it was going to get.

The two of them fell into silence as they just swayed to the music with each other enjoying this rare moment, Moments like these did not seem to last long for either of them at the moment and it was nice to just be able to hold one another and pretend like things were okay even though they both knew that they still had a really steep hill to climb if they wanted their lives to go back to semi-normal.

“I was thinking that uh maybe I’m ready for a one on one date,” (Y/n) said looking up at him watching a smile spread across his face.

“Really?” He asked, sounding like a kid who you just told to go crazy at toys are us.

“Yeah.” She responded. “Like a crowded restaurant obviously, and I might ask Louise to come and sit at a booth in the back of the restaurant, but yes I want to go on a formal date. And I promise I won’t stand you up this time.”

“Thank you so much, (Y/n).” He said leaning down to pull her into a hug. She resisted at first but then found herself wrapping her arms around him, her chin resting on his shoulder as she just let her self relax in his warm embrace. It was going to be okay she thought to herself. They were going to be okay.

Washington D.C. and Bar Harbor, Maine

Spencer picked his whole body up off the bed before throwing himself down on the underside for what felt like the hundredth time that night. Sleep was hard to come by these days even harder than when he worked at the BAU. All night he found himself reaching out for her only to remember that he hasn’t been able to hold her for a year now. They were coming up on the one year anniversary, a thought that made his heart shatter. One year. How is that possible? Every morning he woke up and for a split second, he was happy before the events of the past year came back to him and the realization that his wife might never come back to him.

He reached across the bed grabbing her pillow and shoving his face into it inhaling the scent of her perfume. At this point, it was artificial as he just made sure to spray her pillow every night. In his mind that was a sign that he needed to figure out how to sleep without smelling her as there was a good chance, this would be the rest of his life. He tried sleeping that night without the smell on the pillow, but that night he was never able to fall asleep. So the next day, running on about 2 hours of sleep in the past 48 hours, he drove to the mall and bought another bottle. When he got home he sprayed the pillow, buried his face into, and slept 13 hours. Even after all of that he still woke up feeling more tired than before.

As he closed his eyes, he tried to imagine that she was here, that she was laying right next to him and that he had his head resting on his chest. He would give anything to just have her for five minutes. To hold her tightly to him and at least get some kind of closure. That was what scared him the most, the idea that they could find her body and that he would never get a chance to say goodbye to tell her that he loved her one more time.

The idea of burying another loved one made him sob into her pillow. First Maeve and now (Y/n). He couldn't really stomach the idea of having to bury (Y/n) like he did Maeve. To be honest, he always thought that he would be the one to leave (Y/n), not the other way around. And while he never wanted to leave her, he took the tiniest bit of comfort in the fact that he would never have to live without her. Yet here he was, crying into his missing wife’s pillow begging a God he wasn’t even sure he believed in for his wife to come home.

Wendy sat up in a lonely bed grasping at her chest trying to steady herself and calm down. She looked over in the bed and across the room noting that Peter was nowhere to be found. She felt her heart sink down to the bottom of her stomach when she remembered that he promised he would be there when she woke up.

As her breathing slowly evened out, she laid back down in the bed pushing the comforter and blankets off of her sweaty body. She could still see the girl's long legs walking away from her as she bled out on her living room floor, her only thought being her daughter. She remembered running her hands over her stomach praying that maybe her little girl would survive this. She was eight months pregnant, if the paramedics got here soon maybe they could save the little girl, it was too late for her but maybe not for the daughter.

Wendy took a deep breath reminding herself that it was just a dream, she was never eight months pregnant and while he did hire someone to kill her, the BAU got the girl before he could. Wendy furrowed her eyebrows though at that thought, something about that didn’t seem right. Maybe that wasn’t the way it went down. She remembered the girl vividly. Cat Adams. Wendy had very vivid memories of someone telling her that Spencer had hired to kill his pregnant wife but she didn’t remember why. Then she remembered listening to Spencer confess that Cat was pregnant with his baby although she couldn’t remember exactly what happened to that baby. Did Spencer cheat on her with Cat? She couldn't remember whether she ever found any official proof that he had.

Wendy sighed, throwing herself back down in bed groaning to herself as her mind raced a thousand miles an hour. Some nights it was really hard for her to recall certain events. She looked back at everything like she was terrified but then there would be these tiny little pockets where she couldn't quite pinpoint what really happened.

Maybe Spencer had a schizophrenia break and that’s why she had two very distinct memories of the same man yet a very different version. Yeah, she thought to herself, that makes sense. If he was an undiagnosed schizophrenic then maybe that was when he was abusing her.

She shocked her head realizing that couldn’t be the case. Most people with schizophrenia are not violent. Take Diana for example, she was never violent. Ever. But maybe William was. If William was violent and Spencer saw that as a kid that could’ve led him to be violent.

Sighing while realizing that she was not going to get much sleep tonight, she got out of bed tying her robe tightly around herself before putting on house shoes. Outside the bedroom, she found Peter fast asleep on the couch. He must have had another nightmare and did not want to wake her up, she thought bitterly. He fucking promised.

Tiptoeing around the couch not wanting to wake him up she snuck out the back door of the house and down the narrow pathway that led out to the sea.

Spencer was sitting outside on the apartment’s balcony when he heard the soft knock on the door. He got up out of his chair to head over to the door. He quickly unlocked all six locks he had installed on the door the day after (Y/n) disappeared. If only he had done it the day before. “Thank you for coming,” Spencer said to Derek as he opened the door to let him. Derek immediately shivered under the cool air already from the ac but combining that with the open balcony door caused the apartment to feel like an actual icebox.

“Of course. You called me at three in the morning begging me to come. Of course, I was going to come.”

“I’m sorry if I woke you.”

“Don’t be. I had to talk Lousie out of not coming through.”

“She would’ve been more than welcome,” Spencer said as the two of them headed outside to sit down in the patio chairs.

The two sat in silence for a while before Spencer finally spoke. “I just keep running through the statistics in my head.”

“Don’t do that,” Derek said calmly. “That will only drive you mad.”

“I don’t know how to not do it,” Spencer said weakly. “Statistics are really all that I know and the chances of her coming back home are slim.”

“Slim.” Derek said, “But not none.”

“Still”

“Think about all the statistics that you have beaten Reid,” Derek said. “When you were held captive in Georgia and died on that barn floor, statistics you should not have made it out of there alive.” Spencer nodded knowing that he was right. “What about when you got shot in the knee? They said you’d never walk again, look at you now? Anthrax? Or when you got shot in the neck? What about prison?” Derek said and Spencer shuttered, too much trauma to relive in one night. “You survived all of those things even when statistics said you wouldn't. You just have to trust that she will come home.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

“She will. Everyone comes home eventually.”

The silence that engulfed them was almost deafening. Spencer found himself staring at the moon with tears springing to his eyes. Derek glanced over at him as Spencer let a sob wrack through him. “I know it’s cliche but I used to always tell her that when I was away on a case and she felt so far from me that she could come out here and look at the moon and it would be the same moon that I was seeing wherever I was.” He let out another cry as he stared up at the sky. “Do you think that she can see the moon? Wherever she is?”

“I do,” Derek responded. “I honestly do.”

Wendy sat out by the sea wrapping her robe tighter around herself as she shivered. The tide was high tonight and she smiled to herself at the sound of it crashing against the rocks. It seemed so loud out here tonight, while she knew that the sea was always loud at night it seemed especially loud tonight, which was good, she needed it to drown out her thoughts.

She stared out at the dark waves and couldn’t help but to laugh at the idea that those are the same waters that washed up against the shores just outside of Savannah. Home. How long ago it was that she sat on the Georgia shore listening to the exact same sound at age fifteen while she and Louise were fighting about some boy. How far she has come. She doesn’t even recognize that girl anymore.

That girl was convinced that she would never leave Georgia. She was a good southern girl, went to church every Sunday, didn’t wear white after labor day, monogrammed just about everything she could in junior high, drank sweet tea like it was water, and had the cracker barrel menu memorized. She was a good southern girl who abandoned her southern roots and traded it all for D.C.

To be fair, her brother had been living in D.C. for a few years and she was completely jealous of him when she was in college. So when she packed up and moved to D.C. she swore she’d be back. That she would come back home and find a good southern man and raise her family down there, but fate had other plans.

Marrying an FBI agent was never part of the plan. She never wanted to marry him, to be honest, never wanted to love him, but he made that impossible. Still, she remembered being racked with fear early on in the relationship when he was constantly traveling. She remembered sitting by the phone just waiting for the call that would tell her that he wasn’t coming home. She never planned on marrying him, but she loved him all the same.

It was kind of funny sitting down here on the shore. The moon was shining brightly above her and she remembers him telling her that she could look at the moon anytime she misses him and he would be looking at the same moon. It was a stupid expression but she used to find comfort in it. But now as she stood here sitting at the moon she hoped to God he wasn’t looking at it too.

Inhuman of The Day

August 10 - Ms. Marvel

Kamala Kahn. A latent Inhuman whose transformation was triggered by exposure to the Terrigen cloud. Her newfound powers enables Kamala to increase and decrease her size at will. She can also enact this size-shifting ability to specific limbs, allowing her to create giant fists, elated feet, or elongated legs. With a great deal of focus and energy, Kamala can completely shape-shift and change her entire appearance and size.

These powers take up a great deal of energy and, thus far, she can only utilize them for brief periods of time before she becomes exhausted. While Kamla’s powers help her be resilient to most forms of attack, she has shown a specific vulnerability to electrical based attacks; the reasons for this remain thus far a mystery.

Kamala grew up in Jersey City. Her parents immigrated from Pakistan and Kamala has often struggled in maintaining a balancing between her parents wishes that she adhere to more traditional Muslim values and her feelings of obligation to go behind her parents’ backs and utilize her newfound powers to be a costumed crimefighter.

Her best pal is a her fellow classmate named Bruno Carrelli, who runs his family’s corner bodega near Kamala’s house. Bruno has had a longstanding crush on Kamala, but thus far Kamala has only seen him as a good friend. Bruno was quite crestfallen when he saw that Kamala was a bit smitten by the son of family friends named Kamran.

Later on, Bruno has started dating a young woman named Mike (short for Michaela). At first, Kamala felt oddly jealous over the matter, but eventually came to feel happy for Bruno and also became good friends with Mike. Kamala’s other good friends include Nakia Bahadir (a fellow classmate who also attends the same Mosque as Kamala and her family); Zoe Zimmerman, a classmate and cheerleader who is not as shallow as she often acts; and Josh, a jock who is similarly a lot more intelligent and sensitive than he lets on.

Kamala’s older brother is named Aamir. Unlike Kamala, Aamir is quite strongly devoted to his faith and he often chastises his younger sister for not better adhering to the guidance and customs of the tenets of Islam. Although he can be stodgy and dogmatic, Aamir is a good brother to Kamala and very much wants the best for her.

More recently, Aamir met and fell in love with a young woman named, Tyesha Hillman. The two eventually married and recently Tyesha gave birth to a baby boy whom they named Malik. Kamala thinks Tyesha is just great and she was over the moon happy to have become an aunt. Tyesha’s younger brother, Gabe, is a classmate of Kamala’s and the two have become good friends.

Kamala went through Terrigenesis when the Terrigen Cloud passed through New Jersey while she and Nakia were attending a party near the Hudson Bay. Immediately after receiving her newfound powers, Kamala knew that a great responsibility had be foisted unto her shoulders.

A longtime fan of the super heroes, Kamala quickly decided she needed to use these powers for good and become a costumed hero. Her all-time favorite hero has been the Avenger, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), and Kamala initially shape-shifted into Danvers’ form when rescuing a Zoe who had fallen into the bay and was drowning. Kamala later decided that she should become her own hero with her own identity so she created a new costume, but assumed the name of ‘Ms. Marvel’ as a homage to her hero, Carol Danvers.

Initially, Kamala believed that her powers were a result of her being a mutant. After sharing an adventure with the X-Man, Wolverine, however, she learned she was not a Mutant and was instead one of the many new Inhumans created by the Terrigen Cloud.

Kamala was soon thereafter identified by Queen Medusa as being a new Inhuman possessing great potential (a great potential for heroics as well as a great potential for getting into trouble). Medusa dispatched Lockjaw, the watchdog of the Royal Court, to look after Kamala and keep her out of trouble (although it was more often Lockjaw who needed watching over and protection by Kamala).

Kamala and Lockjaw investigated a series of missing persons involving teenagers in the Jersey City area. They discovered that these youths had been abducted by the bizarre villain known as The Inventor. The Inventor held great disdain toward the younger generation and he used his captives as a bio-electric energy-source for his various machines and inventions. Kamila ultimately defeated The Inventor and freed his many captives.

Kamala was invited to train at New Attilan so to better hone and refine her powers and abilities. While visiting the Inhuman city, Kamala met a number of her fellow new Inhumans (including Inferno, Naja, and Iso and Flint). She also has had adventures alongside the Amazing Spider-Man, Wolverine, Loki, Moon Girl and the Agents of Shield.

Throughout her early adventures as a superhero, Kamala struggled with feelings of guilt over the fact that she was disobeying her parents and pursuing a secret life her family did not know about. She would often discuss these feelings (in a covert fashion) with Sheik Abdullah at her Mosque.

Sheik Abdullah has been able to offer Kamala good advice, encouraging her that carving her own path, doing what she feels is right, is the best way to honer her parents and her god.

Later, Kamala reunited with a childhood friend named Kamran, who it turned out was also a new Inhuman. Kamila was quite smitten with Kamran, yet he proved not to be as good a guy as he initially seemed.

Kamran was secretly in league with the duplicitous Inhuman named Lineage, who used him to lure Kamala into a trap. Like Medusa, Lineage was extremely intrigued by Kamala and certain there was something particularly special about her. Lineage was staging a coup of New Attilan to forward his Inhuman supremacist agenda; and he very much wanted Kamala to join his cause.

Kamala refused Lineage’s offer to join him and escaped his clutches. Lineage was later defeated by Medusa and the other Inhumans, but Kamran continued the schemes that Lineage had put in place. Believing that he might find a like-minded ally, Kamran abducted Kamala’s older brother, Aamir, hoping to expose him to the transformative Terrigen Mists. Ms. Marvel, joined by Captain Marvel, arrived on the scene and defeated Kamran, rescuing Aamir.

At the onset of The Secret Wars event, where it appeared as though the world was ending, Kamala’s mother admitted to Kamala that she is aware of her double life as a superhero. Kamala’s mother doesn’t entirely agree with this decision, but she is nonetheless very proud of her daughter.

Following the Secret Wars Event, Ms. Marvel was recurred to join Tony Stark’s all new, all different group of Avengers. Along with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and The Vision, Kamala was joined on the roster by her fellow young heroes Nova (Sam Alexander) and Spider-Man (Miles Morales). Kamala has found Sam to be a bit of an annoyance, but she’s cultivated a close friendship with Miles.

Being an Avenger had been a dream come true for Kamala., but the great responsibilities of being an Avenger, maintaining patrols of her local Jersey City, keeping up with her school work, on top of various social and family obligations has left her very much over-taxed and more of then not, quite exhausted.

Following an adventure where Ms. Marvel foiled a plot by the sinister Dr. Faustus to take over the minds of a trendy neighborhood in Jersey City, Kamala came to realize that she was being stretched too thin by all of her many obligations. In an effort to navigate around this problem, Kamala and her friend Bruno used a high tech 3-D printer and magical material that had been left behind by the trickster god, Loki, and created multiple drone-like clones of Kamala.

Kamala had hoped these clones might sit-in for her at school or during family functions, thus allowing her more time to attend to her duties as a super hero and Avengers.

As might be expected, this plot went terribly wrong and the various clones developed their own rudimentary sentience, running amok before amalgamating together into a rampaging behemoth. Ms. Marvel was eventually able to defeat this monstrosity with the assistance of Captain Marvel and Iron Man.

Later, Ms. Marvel was recruited by Captain Marvel to head up a platoon of junior Carol Corps Cadets. Captain Marvel was using the prophetic visions provided by the new Inhuman, Ulysses, to prevent crimes and disasters before they happened. Ms. Marvel and the cadets were put in charge of intervening on future crimes occurring in the Jersey City area.

Initially, this plan to prevent on crimes before they occurred was working well and Kamala did not see a downside to the preventative justice program. When discussing the matter with Tyesha, however, Kamala came to wonder about how this system may be infringing on individual’s civil liberties. Ulysses’ powers to see the future was essentially a refined process of profiling. Tyesha spoke about how such profiling was used to essentially criminalize entire subsections of the population. She spoke about the neighborhood where Tyesha grew up and how the police utilized profiling as a means to enforce a very racist agenda.

The burgeoning doubts Kamala was feeling over the whole matter were further compounded when the young cadets under her charge started acting in an increasingly authoritative and aggressive fashion. The power to essentially change the future had quickly gone to these youngsters’ heads. Ms. Marvel and the cadets were made aware of a vision Ulysses had involving a mass murder at Kamala’s high school. They rushed to the would-be perpetrator's home to arrest him before he could commit this crime. Much to Kamala’s shock, the culprit turned out to be her good friend, Josh.

It turned out that Josh was bereft over the fact that Zoe had broken up with him. He had planned on causing a blackout at his school, yet (according to Ulysses’ vision) doing so would have caused an electrical surge and subsequent fire that would have claimed many lives. The cadets roughed Josh up and detained him to ensure that this disaster would not occur.

Although Kamala was glad to have prevented this tragedy, she continued to have doubts over the idea of detaining people without due process or access to legal representation. Her committed to the whole program of utilizing Ulysses’ visions to alter the future was beginning to wain. And she hasn’t been the only one. The entire superhero community has become split over the matter, with roughly half siding with Captain Marvel and feeling that Ulysses’ visions must be used so to save lives, and the other half siding with Iron Man, feeling that civil liberties must be maintained and Ulysses’ profiles of the future are not refined enough to put such absolute faith in. Following the death of The Hulk, the philosophical differences between these two groups came to a head, lines were drawn and hero came to battle hero. Forced to choose a side, Ms. Marvel opted to align herself with Iron Man (even though doing so put her at odds with her mentor, Captain Marvel, as well as her fellow Inhumans of New Attilan).

Meanwhile, Bruno attempted to break into the detention facility where Josh was being held. He used a homemade explosive device to get through the main door. The device malfunctioned and blew up right in front of Bruno. Kamala arrived to find Bruno gravely injured.

He survived, but sustained paralysis to half of his body. Bruno ultimately chose to leave Jersey and accepted an invitation to study at the School of The Golden City of Wakanda.

The whole affair caused Kamala to question the methods of the predictive justice program and lose faith in her former hero, Captain Marvel. Ultimately, Kamala left the Avengers and created a new team of young heroes called The Champions.

Following a brief vacation in which Kamala visited relatives in Pakistan, Ms. Marvel found herself matching wits with a mysterious new villain known only as Doc.X. It turned out that this Doc.X was actually a computer program that had somehow gained sentience and attempted to extort Kamala into doing its bidding, threatening to expose her and her friends’ secrets if she refused to do its bidding. It’s about their daily lives, their struggles, and the small obstacles they face that amount to a larger problem of a patriarchal society. People assume that women in positions of power can be the strength for other women but at times, even they are helpless, and unfortunately this movie shows us the mirror of how deeply ingrained male chauvinism is in our society.

The film follows two women, Kalpana (Saloni Batra), a superintendent of police, and Soni (Geetika Vidya Ohlyan), a policewoman junior to her, as they and their team try to reduce crime against women. However, Soni’s short-temper in contrast to Kalpana’s rationality, cause obstacles in their mission. With minimal dialogues and a short runtime of 1 hour 30 minutes, the screenplay is concise and subtle. The director, Ivan Ayr, is focused less on building story and more on building atmosphere, through actions and expressions. The tension is not in the plot but is in the friction amongst the different characters. There are moments which are slow, but they work as an addition to this overall atmosphere of despair and discomfort. Ayr has created a universe that has very little light. The tone is supposed to be that of gloom, and the use of blues, greys, and blacks in the color scheme, give even the daylight shots a feeling of sadness. However, despite this bleak but authentic portrayal, there is a sense of relief that at least these women exist and try to make a change even if their efforts go in vain.

Both of these characters are prototypes of women we see in society today. Soni is the young, vivacious woman, marred with difficulties in her personal life, and eager to make a change by rebelling against the system. She has no control over her emotions and is transferred multiple times on charges of misconduct. Kalpana, on the other hand, is more experienced. She has seen how the system works, and how the world works, which is why she is more methodical in her approach. Soni and Kalpana’s bond is the thread that holds this film together. Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Saloni Batra share such an amazing chemistry on screen due to their impressive, realistic acting skills. They are able to show the vulnerabilities of each character as they try to navigate the frailties of the system.

Both characters are so different in their personalities and approaches to their cases, but their lives are not much different. Soni has to deal with an ex Naveen, who made a mistake (which we are not aware of), but is now asking for forgiveness. He shows concern for her, yet there are times when he makes misogynistic remarks, like the idea that he needs to protect her after she is threatened, as if she cannot take care of herself. Kalpana’s life is not much different. Her personal life looks perfect on the surface as she has a loving family and caring husband that are supportive of her profession. However, there is hyper-masculinity looming around her. For one, her husband, also a police officer, constantly undermines her. He supports her, yet also claims that she as a female superintendent is not authoritative enough with her juniors, which is why Soni rebels. There is also her mother-in-law who constantly ask her about her plans to have children in the future and harps on about how she shouldn’t be working the night shift. But, the most impactful scene in the film, is when she, her husband, her sister-in-law, and her brother-in-law are discussing the misconduct of Soni. With casual tones, her brother-in-law and her husband laugh and talk about the situation. Her brother-in-law even goes on to say that women like Soni tend to come from homes where there is a lot of violence. His view is chauvinistic and stereotypical and Kalpana clearly disagrees with him, but stays silent, out of respect for the relationship, and knowing that her speaking up will just aggravate the situation.

It is characters and situations like these, which this film uses to show hypocrisy in society. Men who are supporting the rise of women to power are also trying to control that rise by imposing their thoughts and convictions on these women, without listening to them and trying to understand what they truly want. It’s not the men who are proudly patriarchal and demeaning towards women that are the biggest threats, but it is the men that are assumed to be progressive, but are subtly patriarchal in their thinking due to their upbringing and the people around them. Soni is important and impactful because is a stark representation of all that is wrong with our society. Solving individual crimes will not solve the problem of why these crimes happen in the first place. The mindset of people needs to change, and until that happens, women are not safe.
