Miami spice: Lewis Hamilton delights in dream opening to trio of US F1 races
Lewis Hamilton has hailed the growth of Formula One in the United States as a remarkable success story for the sport, describing it as a dream for F1 to be racing again at the Miami Grand Prix. The British driver likely faces another trying weekend at the Hard Rock Stadium circuit this weekend but also reiterated his determination to help his Mercedes team return to the front of the grid. This weekend’s Miami Grand Prix is the second time Formula One has been held in the city after the circuit made its debut last season. It is the first of three races in the US this season. The US Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas will follow in October and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, taking place on the Strip and that being organised and promoted by the sport’s owners Liberty Media, will take place in November. After four years without a US GP between 2008 and 2011, racing returned to Austin in 2012, but initially struggled to gain a mass audience. However in recent years, partly fuelled by the Drive to Survive TV series, there has been a huge surge in the popularity of the sport in the US with both COTA and Miami selling out. Last year the US GP attracted 440,000 fans over the weekend, an F1 attendance record, while the Miami race reached a record TV audience in the US of 2.58 million viewers. Hamilton, who is by far the sport’s highest profile driver in the US, acknowledged how important it was for F1 to be popular in the country. “It is a dream for us to be in Miami and in the United States,” he said. “They are massive sporting fans here so to be in such an important city like Miami where sport is huge – and now Formula One is part of that – it is great to see. “For such a huge country, it is amazing that we finally have three races here. The difficult thing with Formula One is that you usually visit a country once a year. But the growth has been huge and it is such a big market for the sport.” For the second year in succession, Mercedes are off the pace of front-runners Red Bull, who have dominated the season so far with world champions Max Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Pérez taking two wins apiece from the opening four meetings. 2012 American GP
Disclaimer for this season. It turns out that I only have the footage of the race for a lot of the GPs (no build-up, no post-race content) so there will be way less GIFs unfortunately. I will let you know for each of these reviews if there are GIFs or not. THIS ONE HAS GIFS.
It's the penultimate race of 2012 and our first time in Austin. We're also back to minimal content, unfortunately.
Seb is on pole. Lewis 2nd, Webber 3rd, 4th Raikkonen, Schumacher is 5th, Hulkenberg 6th, Alonso only 7th.
Formation lap
Lol Patrick Dempsey is here. Not too weird, he raced himself, but he's here with Matt Leblanc. That is weird.
And they're racing!
Ay wtf they're filming the start from the back, I can't see shit. Lewis got overtaken by Webber. Plenty of cars going wide. Alonso up in 4th already. At the end of the first lap then, Webber is only 0.7 behind Seb, then Lewis 1 second behind him, and Alonso 1 second behind him.
Lewis overtakes Webber in lap 3 but he goes wide and Webber keeps the position. He's only half a second behind him. And in lap 4 Lewis does it again and this time makes it stick. His engineer tells him Seb is 2.5 seconds ahead and "We can catch him". Istg if his car breaks down again I'm giving up on this rewatch (but not really). He sets the fastest lap shortly after.
10 laps in, that gap is down by a half. Come on! In the meantime further down Massa is gaining positions as is Raikkonen. Then Seb sets the fastest lap. This is not going to be easy. A little while later he locks up though. Lewis is still 1.2 seconds behind. Now under 1 seconds! He has DRS! Half a second! JEV DNF but honestly who cares right now. Lewis is still around 1 second behind Seb, more or less. Alonso is gaining a lot over Webber in 3rd place. And Webber is told KERS is failing! That explains it... And yep. He's pulled over. It's a DNF. Alonso up in P3.
20 laps in, Lewis is losing on Seb. His tyres must be done. There's 36 laps to go. What will the strategy be? Alonso behind is catching up... Ah yep here you go, McLaren mechanics in the pitlane. Alonso also pits. OH it's an AMAZING pit stop for McLaren, for once! Only 2.4 seconds! Unbelievable! And quite the opposite for Alonso : 6.3!!! And he's really struggling with grip. Seb pits on the next lap, 2.7 seconds. He's still in the lead but now only half a second in front of Raikkonen who's currently P2 but hasn't pitted yet. Lewis is 1.8s behind so also not far away, while Alonso has to make up for 15 seconds after that catastrophic stop, now down in P5 behind Massa who also has yet to stop. And Jenson easily overtook him! It seems to be difficult to get the hard tyres to temperature. And Lewis overtakes Raikkonen! He's back in P2. Remember, he got the hard tyres one lap before Seb so now's the time to set an amazing time before his tyres are at the right temperature. Raikkonen pitted and it's also a terrible stop, 6.4. Let's see. Yeah he tucks in right behind Alonso but he's not far away. Seb's engineer tells him "Hamilton back in P2". It's a warning, but it's Jenson setting the fastest lap. He's now in P4? Ahead of Alonso? When did that happen. Lewis' engineer tells him he's been 2 tenths faster than Seb on the last lap, "we can get him". The gap is indeed only 1.7.
Massa pits so Alonso is back in P4 behind Jenson. Lewis sets the fastest lap. But then he loses time on Seb... I think it's traffic. He's told on the radio that the tyres are doing well and he can go for it basically. Yep that gap is closing again. Half a second in a few corners' time. Seb gains the DRS in the traffic and Lewis is stuck behind a Marussia... Okay he's past. Fastest lap. 1.3 seconds. Fastest lap again. He's under the second. Go baby go. DRS. 0.4... Almost... Lewis has nothing to lose. That can't be said of Seb. Jenson pits, he's the last to do so, on lap 36. Now it's Seb fastest lap. They're giving Lewis more power. It's back to a second wide gap. 0.9. 0.8. 0.6. 0.4... Jenson overtakes Grosjean for P6. I'm starting to wonder whether Lewis can make it... The gap shrinks and widens and shrinks and widens... Neither of them are giving in. Oh. All of a sudden he's closer than he's been this whole race! Ooooh. In the meantime, Schumacher has to move to a two-stop strategy because of how terrible the Mercedes are on the tyres. Oi oi oi almost! 0.2 with the DRS but at the end of the straight it's just not enough! Can Seb resist to the end? 15 laps to go!
Aaaaaaaaah YES HE'S DONE IT YESSSS LEWIS IS IN THE LEAD COME ON! Two guys in the public just got filmed missing a high five in the most embarrassing way possible lol.

Seb gets on the radio : "Unbelievable!" he says. He's complaining about that overtake. I don't understand what he's saying exactly because the radios are absolute shit and they're talking like doctors write prescriptions. But he's pissed. His engineer tells him they saw "that" and to focus on the job. I mean. The overtake was close but not dangerous like... If he felt it was too close he could've lifted or adjusted his line. I'm genuinely baffled as to what he's suggesting Lewis did wrong there (and if you've read these reviews you know for a fact that I don't shy away from calling Lewis out when he's not being clean but I really don't see what Seb is talking about here). Apparently he said "silly overtake". Anyway. While he complains Lewis sets the fastest lap. 12 laps to go.
Jenson is very close to Raikkonen too, fighting for P5. Seb is not giving up on P1, he's only 1.2 behind. Lewis' engineer keeps him updated on sector times, and in answer he worries about whether he's in the DRS zone. Not yet, but this is not over. Jenson overtook Raikkonen. 10 laps to go. Ohh that gap is down to one second now... Lewis... He's not matching pace... Come on... Oh 1.3 so no DRS, thankfully... 7 laps to go. Skysports idc about the fight for 8th show me the lead please. 1.3s. 5 laps to go, 4. Seb is not gaining anymore, phew. 3 laps to go. Now Seb sets the fastest lap again... The gap is 1.4. Apparently Jenson had a KERS problem. 1.7s, 2 laps to go. Final lap... Fastest lap for Lewis!
And it's the end of the race!

I found the post race interviews online. The quality is too poor for gifs but let's hear what Lewis had to say anyway. Omg. They have cowboy hats instead of caps. I hate it. Lewis goes to leave the cooling room but Alonso grabs him by the shoulder to see what he looks like in the hat.
Now we jump straight to the post race interviews on the podium, they're wearing regular caps again. It's Mario Andretti interviewing them. He says Lewis really tormented Sebastian "you had the resolve, you did a fabulous race and what I'm interested in, give me some reaction about the circuit." (The circuit almost got scrapped from the calendar before even being used, I read on Wikipedia.) Lewis says he's so happy, the fans have been amazing this weekend (the crowd roars). He says he thinks it's one of the best if not best grand prix they've had all year and especially for him and his team, he hasn't won in a long time and he's so proud, so proud of the work the guys did and so grateful for the support they've had. Seb agrees with Lewis that the grand prix was incredible. It was his 100th GP?! Oh yeah it was.

Sealed with a win: the Majorcan wraps up the crown Down Under. Izan Guevara (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) is the 2022 Moto3™ World Champion! The Majorcan took another stunning victory in the Animoca Brands Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix to wrap up the crown, taking himself more than the requisite 50 points clear with two rounds remaining. Guevara, born in Majorca in 2004, was already riding motorcycles by the age of three. His first international success came in the European Talent Cup in 2019, as the Spaniard took two top tens in his debut races before winning a stunning six races in a row to take the crown as a rookie. That would be his calling card as an achievement the following season, too. Guevara raced in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2020 and moved into what was then the Moto3™ Junior World Championship, now known as JuniorGP™. There, it was a similar story to the ETC the year before: a few solid results prefaced a first win, a second place and then a run of four victories in a row – three of which were taken from P22 on the grid at MotorLand Aragon. In Valencia, Guevara completed the stunning feat of taking the crown as a rookie, defeating Xavier Artigas and Pedro Acosta. The Majorcan then moved up to the Moto3™ World Championship for 2021 and hit the ground running. The number 28 made an impression immediately, homing in on the podium at Silverstone and Aragon with fourth places. By Phillip Island, Guevara’s advantage had grown to 49 and the Majorcan had his first match point. Permitam-me desdobrar a metáfora; os quatro são alguns dos muitos pilotos que, quando pensavam ter atingido o topo do mundo, ao chegarem na Fórmula 1, categoria de maior renome no automobilismo, deixaram a atmosfera e conheceram um universo infinito de possibilidades e caminhos para desbravar. A frase “há vida fora da Fórmula 1” é semelhante à afirmação (ou questionamento) de que “há vida fora da Terra” não apenas na construção gramatical, mas também nos seus significados. Quando se fala à respeito da astronomia e do estudo da vida interplanetária, há quem acredite que o planeta Terra seja o ápice da existência humana, enquanto existe quem defenda o contrário, de que há muito o que se explorar “lá fora”. 
Trata-se de uma visão da vida que não se limita ao que é construído socialmente como o melhor ou o limite do sucesso e do conhecimento. Astronautas são essas pessoas que escolhem ter como profissão a exploração do universo além do que foi colocado como o fim da linha para a humanidade, mas antes deles, vieram os estudiosos, os astrônomos de séculos em que, literalmente, era crime ter senso crítico. É difícil mensurar o avanço que a ideia de que há mais além da atmosfera terrestre já trouxe para a humanidade. Sair da caixinha faz crescer e traz para todos que tomam a decisão de se arriscar oportunidades incríveis. Trazendo a metáfora para o esporte à motor, o piloto (e o fã, por que não?) que vê além do eurocentrismo “concretado” pelo poder e pela influência da Fórmula 1 no mundo descobre, literalmente, uma galáxia; são planetas, constelações e aglomerados de corpos celestes que formam caminhos que podem levá-los, literalmente, às estrelas. É lindo, e libertador - como o ato de abrir os olhos sempre é. IndyCar, Fórmula E e a World Endurance Series (WEC) são algumas das várias categorias que têm recebido ex-F1s ao longo dos últimos anos. A IndyCar, em especial, é a detentora da maior corrida do mundo, a centenária 500 Milhas de Indianápolis, ou carinhosamente “Indy500”. Essa corrida em especial foi o divisor de águas na vida de dois dos pilotos mencionados acima, o americano Alex Rossi, que corre hoje pela equipe Andretti, e o japonês Takuma Sato, atual piloto da Rahal Letterman Lenigan Racing (RLL).

Alex venceu a Indy500 em 2016 e foi segundo colocado na prova na edição de 2019. Nos últimos três anos, tem disputado diretamente o título da IndyCar Series contra adversários como Josef Newgarden, campeão mais jovem da categoria desde a unificação e o experiente Scott Dixon, neozelandês pentacampeão da Indy. Alex é hoje um dos responsáveis por trazer mais emoção e competitividade para a categoria, pilotando com agressividade, inteligência e muita sagacidade. Quem o vê em alto nível hoje, possivelmente como um dos melhores pilotos em atividade no automobilismo mundial, não imagina que ele tenha passado despercebido pela Fórmula 1.O americano, que deixou o lar aos 18 anos para competir na Europa, foi vice-campeão da GP2 Series (atual Fórmula 2) em 2015. Desde 2012, era piloto de testes de equipes anãs como as falecidas Caterham e Marussia. Foi por esta última que fez sua estreia na Fórmula 1, porém, como Manor, em 2015, competindo por cinco corridas nas quais seu melhor resultado foi um 12º lugar em casa, no GP dos Estados Unidos, no circuito texano de Austin.
Na época, a habilidade de Alex foi questionada, assim como seu futuro. Deixou a maior categoria do mundo pela porta dos fundos e, de volta ao lar, encontrou abrigo na principal categoria de open wheel da América Latina, a IndyCar, pilotando pela Andretti, equipe do lendário Mario Andretti, campeão da F-1 e da Indy. A primeira temporada do piloto de 27 anos foi de adaptação, até ele ressurgir e se reencontrar como um piloto competitivo ao vencer a Indy500 na sua primeira vez na prova mais lendária da história do esporte à motor. De lá pra cá, o piloto só cresceu. Foi vice-campeão da temporada de 2017 e agora é terceiro colocado na briga pelo título em 2019, que ainda conta com duas provas para decidir quem vai ficar com a Astor Cup, a taça da IndyCar.
Takuma Sato é hoje o maior piloto oriental da história do automobilismo. No currículo, tem uma pesada Indy500, que venceu em uma prova fantástica em 2017, além de algumas vitórias na categoria em que corre desde 2010, dois anos antes de brigar por uma vaga na Scuderia Toro Rosso, na Fórmula 1, categoria em que permaneceu entre 2002 e 2008. Coadjuvante nos anos em que a categoria fora dominada por Michael Schumacher e posteriormente por Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen e Lewis Hamilton, o piloto de hoje 42 anos era considerado mais um dos tantos “japoneses malucos” que passaram pela Fórmula 1, apelidados de nomes como “kamikazes”, pelas manobras consideradas inconsequentes e arriscadíssimas. Perdendo a vaga na Toro Rosso para Sebastién Buemi (outro piloto a conseguir construir um belo currículo fora da F-1, por sinal), Sato veio de mala e cuia para a América, onde se tornou, em 2013, o primeiro piloto japonês a vencer uma prova da IndyCar, na corrida de Long Beach, uma das melhores do calendário da categoria. Sato também teve um desempenho discreto na IndyCar, até 2017, ano em que levou a prova mais disputada do automobilismo mundial, a Indy500, correndo pela Andretti. Uma temporada consistente lhe deu seu melhor resultado até o momento na categoria, terminando o ano em oitavo lugar na tabela.

Para quem acompanhou a prova, é difícil não se lembrar - e não se sentir feliz - com o riso de felicidade expressado pelo piloto após a vitória. Sato sabia que estava fazendo história. Após a corrida, retornou para o Japão por alguns dias para cumprir a agenda de campeão da Indy500 como se tivesse conquistado uma temporada inteira - da Fórmula 1, talvez? O contagiante brilho nos olhos do japonês se repetiu novamente no último sábado (24), quando Sato venceu a insana corrida no circuito oval de Gateway com uma estratégia que superou os planos e o arrojo de outros pilotos que também brigaram pela vitória, como Josef Newgarden. A corrida se tornou ainda mais especial para Takuma já que, na prova anterior, no Tricky Triangle de Pocono, ele havia sido acusado de provocar um big one que pôs fim à prova de cinco pilotos e, por pouco, não levou um deles, o sueco Felix Rosenqvist, ao hospital. Redenção dupla - por Pocono, e pela decisão de abrir as possibilidades após a Fórmula 1 e ver o que mais o mundo do automobilismo podia lhe reservar.
Foram as mesmas decisões tomadas por Jean-Eric Vergne e Sebastién Buemi, ex-pilotos da Toro Rosso na Fórmula 1; o suíço Buemi entre 2009 e 2011, e o francês Vergne, entre 2012 e 2014. Por se tratar de uma equipe “satélite”, o time B da escuderia principal Toro Rosso, havia pouco que os dois, criados pela Academia de Desenvolvimento da Red Bull, poderiam fazer com o carro que tinham. Acabaram eclipsados pelo que alguns chamam de “moedor de pilotos” da RBR. Seria uma razão para acreditar que eles haviam perdido a chance de suas vidas de alcançarem o ápice da competitividade em suas carreiras.
Até a Fórmula E aparecer.
A categoria, gerida pela Federação Internacional do Automobilismo (FIA), surgiu como uma forma de promover sustentabilidade e inovação tecnológica para o meio automotivo através dos motores elétricos. É peculiar e atraente, e sobretudo, recente; nasceu no fim de 2014 em uma temporada com duração atípica em comparação às outras categorias de automobilismo, que seguem o padrão do início ao fim do ano. Buemi e Vergne fizeram suas estreias na F-E na temporada inicial da categoria, em 2014-15; o suíço começou com um abandono no ePrix de Beijing, na China, mas foi só um “esquenta” para que a competição realmente começasse para ele.

Em sua segunda corrida, na Malásia, conquistou um terceiro lugar, primeiro degrau de uma campanha que faria dele o vice-campeão da categoria em sua primeira temporada. Em 2015-16, Buemi se redimiu e conquistou uma vitória no mesmo circuito em que não havia completado a prova de estreia da categoria. Novamente, o primeiro passo em uma sucessão de boas corridas que o levariam a ser o campeão da temporada, pela equipe Renault e.dams. Porém, a F-E, categoria da qual é atual vice-campeão pela Nissan e.dams, foi apenas mais um de tantos outros capítulos incríveis da carreira do suíço. 
Ele é bicampeão da World Endurance Series, tendo vencido em 2014 e em 2018-19, além de ter vencido por duas vezes as 24h de Le Mans, principal prova da categoria e um dos pés da Tríplice Coroa do Automobilismo, composta pelo GP de Mônaco de Fórmula 1 e pela Indy500.
O francês Jean Eric-Vergne é quem sustenta o título de atual campeão mundial da F-E, o segundo em sua carreira. Porém, ao contrário de Sebastién Buemi, que começou com o pé direito, o piloto teve que trabalhar por mais tempo antes de receber os louros na categoria. Sua estreia foi na terceira corrida da temporada de 2014-15, em Punta del Este, no Uruguai, correndo pela Andretti Autosport. Três provas depois, em Long Beach, nos EUA, foi ao pódio pela primeira vez ao conquistar um segundo lugar. Três anos depois em 2017-18, aos 28 anos, somando quatro vitórias e mais dois pódios como melhores colocações, Vergne venceu pela primeira vez o campeonato da F-E, atingindo o ápice da competitividade em toda a sua carreira.

E Vergne repetiu o feito em 2018-19, a temporada mais longa da categoria, ano que começou como o piloto a ser batido ao estrear com um pódio, no ePrix da Arábia Saudita. E de fato, ele não foi, embora a competição durante a temporada tenha se mantido em alta na categoria.
Seriam necessárias muitas páginas do Google Docs ou do Word para listar todos os pilotos que encontraram uma galáxia inteira para explorar quando se abriram para novos horizontes fora da Fórmula 1. Também levaria tempo listar os pilotos que, por apego à categoria europeia, deixaram de viver momentos incríveis e de construir carreiras brilhantes no esporte à motor (uma menção não-honrosa para a piloto suíça Simona de Silvestro, que deixou de lado a certeza de um futuro na IndyCar para ser piloto de desenvolvimento da Sauber, na Fórmula 1, e acabou desaparecendo dos holofotes do automobilismo mundial, sem oportunidades). O que importa é reforçar que, sim, há vida fora da F-1, e uma vida que pode ser bela. Um despertar que pode ter a sensação parecida com a de abrir os olhos, no espaço, e se deparar com um pedacinho do universo pouquíssimo explorado pelos homens. 
De forma alguma trata-se de desmerecer ou criticar a Fórmula 1, que não deixa de ser a principal categoria do esporte à motor, porém, de mostrar que ter as portas fechadas nela não significam o fim do mundo, mas o começo de um novo.

Fórmula 1 oficializa GP de Miami para temporada de 2022

A Fórmula 1 anunciou neste domingo, 18, que o GP de Miami fará parte do calendário 2022 da categoria. Há alguns anos, a Liberty Media buscava incluir um segundo circuito nos Estados Unidos no calendário. Desde 2012, na parte final da temporada, o Circuito das Américas, em Austin, no Texas, recebe a prova em território norte-americano. Caso o cenário não evoluísse com a cidade da Flórida, Indianápolis, Los Angeles e New Jersey estavam no radar dos organizadores. O contrato com o novo circuito é valido por 10 anos e conseguiu superar a contrariedade de moradores da região de Miami Gardens, que fica 25 quilômetros ao norte de Miami e receberá a prova. Membros de grupos ativistas da cidade alegam que a corrida causará problemas com poluição atmosférica e sonora, além de prejudicar o trânsito local. Por isso, o traçado da prova foi modificado diversas vezes até que ficasse localizado em uma região melhor.
O horário da prova e dos treinos também foi alvo de críticas e deve se ajustar para atender aos interesses locais. O início dos eventos não pode coincidir com horário escolar e deve se encerrar antes do pôr do sol. A prova será realizada no entorno do Hard Rock Stadium, casa do Miami Dolphins, equipe de futebol americano da NFL. O traçado terá 5,41 quilômetros, contando com 19 curvas e três retas onde poderá ser liberado o uso do DRS (abertura da asa traseira). Estima-se que a velocidade máxima a ser alcançada será de 320 km/h. Para chegar a um acordo para a liberação da prova, o novo prefeito de Miami Gardens, Rodney Harris, e Stephen Ross, bilionário dono do Miami Dolphins, aprovaram investimento na cidade de US$ 5 milhões (cerca de R$ 28,5 milhões) ao longo dos próximos dez anos.
