Wait wait wait
If Ferin souls are closed to the elements, and Falst can use light magic, and the Light Dragon is the equal and opposite of the Void Dragon ...
Does that mean Erin's plan just got a huge spanner in its works ?
I'm sure Erin would have lots of thoughts on what just happened if he had seen it.

Living Scum
Tumblr media
The bastard grandchildren of Death, born unable to die, unable to create life, unable to feel sated, only able to eat, and scream 'WHY???' to their creator. They show up in numbers during winter auroras as if drawn to the ghostly light.
Happy new year! more creature art to come, I'm going to focus on a stylistic shift and try to learn new stuff over 2024 to keep growing as an artist

Aurora Worldbuilding Detail I Noticed
From the webcomic @comicaurora
From the evidence given, we can see that most humans in this world- adapted and unadapted- have rounded ears. In fact, the only human sub-species specified otherwise are sekrai, with their fin-like ears.
And yet we see several examples of humans with pointed ears, such as Tess (despite most metal-caste appearing to also have round ears),
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Tarren, who has both bright blue hair and pointed ears.
Tumblr media
Both of whom have ears about the same size as any other human, but pointed instead of round. These line up with traits of storm elves, who have small, pointed ears and brightly colored hair which can be blue.
Red has said here that storm elves are "more common on average than wind-influenced elves in major human centers" which we can see in city populations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it's mentioned here that "Many humans nowadays boast traces of elven blood."
Once again, the attention to detail in Aurora is AMAZING. It's great that this part of the worldbuilding is shown not only in the background, but in major characters, so it has a very tangible effect.
I just think that's really cool!!

Would love to see your take on Nebula or Aurora if you want
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me: I don’t think my work is that detailed
Me after finishing the lineart for Aurora: …oh, well,, maybe so
Anyway I know there’s issues of debated anachronism in regards to blue paint and the Pictish, but I think it would look cool so we’re saying fae and some other magical being did it in my thing and that’s what Nebula’s war paint is based off of here. She hasn’t used magic to heal all of her wounds she’s received also since as a magical being on Earth and the lead of the head Fae Court’s Militia, showing her inability to be stopped or stamped out is a thing of great pride and honor for her.
Aurora is based primarily on the Sami people since on my thing, Lovix comes from the areas of what could be called Fennoscandia:)

your thoughts on minecraft lore are so fucking sexy. tell me more
TEEHEE YES <3
i dont have muuuuch more atm bc i. im dumb and i never write them down. but rn i have a hc that pillager patrols do some sort of recruiting, bc you never see children among illagers, so where would they get new people? they probably 'recruit' (aka, kidnap) villagers who are outstanding or 'gifted' (like, who probably have some ounce of magic, so they'd go through some training and would become evokers). this could also happen to the babies villagers who weren't killed during a raid.
less likely and i'd have to do some more thinking and researching to develop this other hc but maybe we dont see their kids bc they live somewhere else while growing up. underground? in some of the hidden rooms in the mansions? a completely different place? who knows! maybe they have a some sort of quarters or district where they all go through some thorough training before they're old and/or good enough to join the patrols and raids. also, i believe in the pillager<vindicator<evoker hierarchy. pillagers can work their way up to vindicators, but evokers are their own thing, if you dont have magic abilities you cant become an evoker, which makes them rare and powerful and all that. idk where the illusioners fall into this tho, as unused mobs i know very little of them, but i'd say somewhere above vindicator and below evoker, could probably work its way up to an evoker through training.
in my perspective, patrols, as well as all illagers groups, are like an attempt at some sort of oppressive government (or maybe religious group?). the patrols are, well, as the name suggests, a patrol, they're keeping watch and looking for any 'trouble', attacking villagers and golems probably to scare them. Raids are more destructive, i'd say they're caused by a threat to the illagers (like the player, despite said player's reputation w the raided village, although i like to believe that, in this worldbuilding, thats not the only reason they raid a village) and not only attack the player, but also the village, killing every adult villager, taking their sources and children, leaving a clear message of what's waiting for the others if they dont behave.
as for the villagers, they're pretty much defenceless in these situations, unable to harm literally anything. you could even hc that they're vegetarians, since all they eat are vegetables and bread, despite butchers selling meat and stew. why are they so pacific? they dont each other, other villages, mobs, nothing, and any villager who's relocated to another village will get along w them just fine, despite biome difference. you could try a religious approach to this. their only defence is the iron golems, who show up naturally or summoned by the villagers, another thing that could be explored through a religious approach (which, imo, is probably different than the illagers religion, if we go that way). the only way for a villager to turn hostile is, again, turned into a witch or a zombie, which immediately outcasts them.
you could also think 'huh, so to be accepted by the villagers you have to be passive, the moment you turn hostile, you're not welcome anymore', and yeah, pretty much if you ignore the golems ability to kill mobs (they're more like neutral mobs i think). makes sense when it comes to the player as well, w the whole gossip and reputation thing when the player saves or trades or kills/harms a villager, but theres math to that so i wont touch it lol. overall the villagers are major pacifists, shame the illagers are totally taking advantage of them.
this is all losely based on my own knowledge w minecraft, there might be some stuff that goes against game rules but who cares, im having fun. i probably have more thoughts but i forgor, will bring them to you once i remember/have more <3

whew, people get heated over their fav booktok book.
#memorie.txt#once you’ve read more you’re more willing to admit that you love a kinda poorly written book#by god i love jackaby. the writing style is a solid 3/5 and the plot stuff is cheesy as hell.#you get a better frame of reference for ‘this book requires an award’ style of good#and a ‘god this is so my dumb little niche that scratches all those weird little itches nobody else has’ style of good#one of my fav series is the ghost and the goth!! is it good?? i don’t know if i’d go that far!!#is it fun and does it make me think of trysi / chryzure stuff??? yes :)#i’m beginning to wonder abt ppl rabid abt their fav books. anyway this one person was losing their shit over ppl liking apollo#and aurora and i’m an aurora shooter but i digress#they were foaming at the mouth and im like Well. its a little not that serious .#he is letters on a page. and also mostly irrelevant to the story as a whole so im kinda confused as to why ppl feel so strongly abt him#it’s funny because most of my complaints stem from an outside pov#where i critique the worldbuilding / plot work / character writing and its inconsistencies#whereas ppl assume im encouraging villainy irl. it is quite seriously more that the villainy is unmotivated#or otherwise poorly done. i love to hate a good villain if the proper legwork is put into it#because i like observing how others work their craft!!!#but my irritation with stephanie is that she doesn’t work her craft well. it’s shoddy craftsmanship full of retcons or#convenience required for plot that otherwise hold no reasoning in the story#and i can admit that i find the series unsatisfying because it’s marketed as a romance (the romance had little chemistry that could be#understood by anyone that’s not straight. straight romances are always laziest because it’s the ‘norm’ so that equates to chem)#and also it was marketed as having plot when rlly the ‘plot’ was trying to put these characters in weird chemistry-less situations together#so yeah i’ll complain abt the villains being jealous shallow archetypes when it could’ve had depth.#i’ll complain abt a lot. but in the end it’s a silly basic ya romance series that isn’t anything unique#most unique stories will not be found on booktok. i’m sorry#i can show you the beautiful world of horror novels though!#or weird lil 80s fantasy novels that are actually quite long that my dad likes showing me#truly no romance novel will be better than the darkangel trilogy though.. that is what stephanie wanted to write.#but that’s lightning in a bottle ithink.#okay anyway. good night. i worked a long day and i have appts in the morning

oooo another sneak peek bc ive figured out a way to reel it in its all sunshine's fault oops
Sunshine’s hands finally unclench, her palms smeared with blood as she flexes her fingers, “I cannot help but feel as if I’m going to lose something dear to me,” she admits, her voice quiet. “There is this protectiveness inside me that is hard to tamp down now that I’m feeling...out of sorts from the attempt. And it wants me to challenge you, to make sure you are good enough to take my place. Good enough to replace me.”
Aurora isn’t sure what to say, she’s not usually known to be tongue tied or confused, but this whole situation is so out of left field, that all she can do is watch helplessly as Sunshine stalks up to her.
“That’s why I’ve been so hard on you,” Sunshine says with a shaky sort of exhale, peering down at Aurora through the lenses of her helmet, “I need you to be perfect, I need you to be the best; it’s not fair, I know it’s not and I’m losing my mind over this. I want to grab you, welcome you into the pack, I want to let you into our den but there is a nasty, nasty part of me that feels like if I do, then you’re going to take what’s mine and I’ll never get that back.”

At what point in Aurora's creation did Life magic also become the body horror mutation? Was that there from the beginning, or put in later, for balancing purposes or otherwise?
I think that was a decently early development. I've always felt like healing magic has the most potential for overt horror that's rarely explored. Most stories with healing mechanics are games, and most games reduce "health" to a linear metric with Good on one end and Dead on the other. This healthbar mechanic is fine in games but gets a little dubious when used outside of it. To preserve stakes, stories will sometimes introduce caveats like "it can't regrow limbs or organs" or "it exhausts the person being healed and can't be overused" but those still feel kind of gameified and arbitrary.
The simplest way to make healing magic not a total gamebreaker is to just lean into it. Biological healing is messy and imperfect. Injuries don't just reset to their pre-injured state. If healing magic just accelerates natural healing, there'll be many injuries it can't fix - and if you quick-heal something like a bone that hasn't been set, it's not going to be pretty - the body will heal it even if it's in the wrong place. If healing magic in contrast augments natural healing and heals the body in ways it can't on its own, we've immediately entered the body horror zone by implication. If healing magic can make you grow a whole new limb or organ, it's altering the body on such a fundamental rule-breaking level that it can by extension be used for all kinds of other stuff. A body knows how to build all kinds of things - the hard part is making sure those things happen in the right places. If we bypass that, we have problems.
This worldbuilding implies two approaches to healing magic: very carefully regulated vs intuitive. The regulated version, where healing magic is packaged into very precise spells with extremely precise instructions, is what's officially taught and what Erin knows how to do. The intuitive version, where the mage just knows what alterations would be healthy vs bad for the subject, thus far appears to be an Alinua-only skill, as she describes being able to "feel" how the life-form she's feeling wants to heal and then working along those lines.

(Worldbuilding) Spirits of the North Star
Orbiting around Polaris, there is a frigid, tidally locked planet with bizarre climatology. I actually have art, this time. The planet is divided into four regions by latitude, since they get treated so differently by the sun.
Tumblr media
THE LOOMS occupies almost the entire western half of the world, where the sun never shines (the north-south pole is perpendicular to the direction the planet is facing). Only geological activity has any effects here, and water that leaks through the porous stone excites movement of tectonic plates and volcanic activity that creates tall spires.
Tumblr media
THE SPIRITS occupies the circles around both poles in the middle of the planet, where it is cold enough for much of the atmosphere to fall as snow, but the magnetosphere is thin enough for ionizing rays to enter. Animals here are blubbery and thick. When one dies, microorganisms take to its corpse, producing a flammable gas as a byproduct. When ionized, the gas glows bright cyan, appearing as if the soul of the animal is escaping. Because the decomposition also produces heat, many animals take refuge at the corpses of others. Sometimes, when the rays hit at the right angle, the soul gas can catch fire, producing a slow burning bonfire that acts as an oasis in the cold.
Tumblr media
THE SHADOWS occupies most of the rest of the sun-side part of the world. Though it is closer to the sun, light is blocked out by ice particles that come from the sun-side pole. The entire ground is an empty, thick sheet of ice, underneath which all animals live. They make ample use of bioluminescence. On rare occasion, animals will manage to chip out a hole in the ice. The water pressure instantly ejects and then freezes a fountain, decorating the landscape with ice sculptures.
Tumblr media
THE NORTH STAR is located at the eastern pole of the planet, and receives the utmost of the sun's light. The rays are bright enough to glass the seabed sand and melt a hole in the thick ice sheet around it. The result is a glass-sand island with a circular liquid water moat and all surrounded by kilometers-high ice. Trees, to avoid damage caused by sunlight, reject all pigment and are instead made of a sugary, clear resin.

Set off from a small village, the party goes to investigate rumors of a cult at a remote keep to the north. the party follows a stream which leads off in the distance to what looks like a large gathering on the hilltop just outside the walls of a massive structure. Are these villagers fed up with demonic incursions? Cultists in the midst of summoning their God? Or is it a good old fashioned bonfire celebration of some kind? They'll have roll a pretty good perception check as they approach. Good luck! - - - Artwork generated using MidjourneyAI Check out more like this at my Patreon.
