Probably the most famous/notorious Hetalia fic, written by much beloved fandom writer George deValier, as part of a larger WW2 AU known collectively as the Veraverse due to being based around songs by Vera Lynn. The mysterious account deletion after years of inactivity probably only added to the mythos.  It was absolutely the kind of fic you'd find scattered references to in the most random corners of the internet back in the heyday of the Hetalia fandom, with all the dramatics you'd expect to follow.

I finished reading Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart by George DeValier (reuploaded on AO3 by an orphaned account) and I don't even have words for this.

It's without a doubt the best written fanfic I've ever read. Lots of philosophy that's not hamfisted but explored well, that perfectly presents itself in the story, as well as all the details that seem small at the start but reappear later on. The emotions, imagery and sentence flow were masterful beyond most I've seen from published authors. My only complaint is that it's kind of OOC, which isn't a major issue given that it's entirely AU anyways and mainly works with this version of the characters, but can be jarring at times. I mention this purely to stress that it's the only real issue I've seen in the fic (if you don't count that it wasn't as sad to me personally as it's often made out to be, which isn't really an issue just a difference in opinion that didn't change the quality of the fic.) It's still beyond amazing.

I want to make a (maybe more than one who knows) longer post on the fic at some point, but for now since it has consumed my whole sleep deprived brain I feel like sharing some parts of it I particularly liked and felt like screenshotting. Spoilers obviously.

(Not the best parts in the fic. Most of the really great scenes I was too enthralled with to think of screenshotting)
