Stanley Uris the quadrilingual legend
Richie is a French immigrant, Eddie is a Mexican immigrant, and Bill lost his speech for a while before developing his stutter.
Because of this, Stanley decided to learn French, Spanish, and ASL to communicate with all 3 of them when he first met them, and he taught Eddie and Richie english.
~\\⋆♡’•’♡⋆//~\\⋆♡’•’♡⋆//~\\⋆♡’•’♡⋆//~
He met Bill first because he already lived in Derry. He learned sign language because he really wanted a friend, and no one else wanted to talk to him. Bill was overjoyed that someone learned ASL just to talk to him.
Then, he met Richie. Bill wanted to make him feel welcomed because he knew what it was like to not be able to communicate, but he was still unable to speak during this time. So Stan learned French to help him learn English.
Finally, Eddie came along. Richie had a big old fat crush on him but Eddie couldn’t understand all his attempts. Stan had enough and learned just so he didn’t have to deal with their miscommunications.
Who wants me to write a oneshot with this idea 🙏🙏

Signing Losers AU
Ever since Bill was little, he’s always had difficulty speaking because of his stutter
To help him with communicating, he and his parents learn sign language
None of the other kids in Bill’s class knew sign and he hardly talked to other kids because a lot of them, like Henry Bowers, made fun of his stutter and how he talked
Then one day in pre-school Bill meets a new kid a year younger than him that also doesn’t speak
Or more accurately can’t speak
Bill notices one day though that this kid was practicing fingerspelling while sitting alone watching the other kids at recess and concludes that he must know sign
So Bill goes over to introduce himself
The kid at first is amazed that someone not only went over to talk to him to be his friend but also knew how to sign! He, much like Bill, never met another kid that knew sign
The kid introduces himself as Stan Uris and explains how an infection he had when he was younger damaged his vocal cords leaving him mute, and to communicate he learned to sign
The two click and become best friends almost instantly
A few years later, Bill’s 1st-grade class gets a new student named Richie and Bill can’t help but find him a bit annoying and really rude
He always speaks really loudly and is terrible at having proper conversations and working  other students and often ignores whatever the teacher says
One day though while Richie was drawing during recess Bill walks up behind him to talk to him but Richie doesn’t respond to him
He keeps saying his named but Richie just doesn’t seem to take any notice of Bill
Bill finally grabs his shoulder and scares Richie half to death when he finally realizes that someone was behind him
Bill demands to know why Richie was ignoring him and Richie, feeling bad about upsetting one of his classmates for once, explains his situation to Bill
His dad’s genetically deaf and Richie inherited the trait leaving him unable to hear almost anything that isn’t loud really loud
His mom knew that she might have a deaf child when she got pregnant with him but the reality that he was deaf was a bit too hard to grasp for her and she insisted on teaching him to read lips and speak to make him “normal” and help him “fit in”
Richie knows it’s bullshit and so does his dad who is a proud Deaf man and insists that it was ridiculous to enroll Richie in a public hearing school instead of a Deaf Institute since Richie is way better at communicating via sign language (which he learned from his father) than orally speaking
His mother somehow won that argument though and Richie started attending Derry Elementary
His teacher’s know about his deafness and that he can’t speak or control the volume of his voice too well and is still learning how to read lips, which is his only way to figure out what hearing people are saying when they aren’t screaming at the top of their lungs at him, which Richie absolutely loathes when they do that
Richie also insisted that when he enrolled that his teachers didn’t tell his peers about him
There was no point in pretending to be “normal” if everyone already knew the truth
Once Richie’s done telling Bill his story Bill instantly feels really bad about how greatly he misjudged this kid
He introduces Richie to Stan and the three of them become great signing buddies
Next year in second grade, Bill get’s assigned to work on a project with a kid named Eddie
The two click and become fast friends, and for Eddie, Bill becomes his first and only friend
That is until Bill introduces Eddie to Stan and Richie
Eddie, unlike the other three boys, has no idea how to sign, but since that’s his friends' preferred way of communicating, insists that they teach him
It takes a while, but by the end of fourth grade, Eddie can talk to his friends in sign easily, though does have to ask what certain signs mean every once in a while
One day in the summer between fourth and fifth grade, Eddie and Bill decide it would be fun to build a dam in the Barrens
They suck at building dams, but the fact that Henry Bowers shows up, apparently having chased another one of his victims down into the Barrens, just made the day exponentially worse
That is until a young Ben Hanscom appears on the scene
He apologizes for the trouble he indirectly cause them and inquires about what they were doing down in the Barrens
Eddie is initially hesitant to tell this kid what they’re doing and letting him stay with them
Henry is still out somewhere searching for him, and if he finds Ben with them, he and Bill would just become even bigger targets to Henry, and that’s not something Eddie wants to deal with
So, Eddie thinking he’s slick, signs to Bill asking what they should do
Little does he know that Ben actually knows how to sign
Being a book nerd without any friends, Ben decided to teach himself how to sign one summer with signing books from the library out of pure boredom
He was by no means an expert signer, but he could have basic conversations and he was able to figure out what Eddie was saying
When Ben responds to Eddie’s question to Bill with sign, both boys are taken back
But that’s also how they knew
He was destined to be their friend
They decided Ben was well worth the risk of possibly facing more harassment from Henry, and they invite him to come down to the Barrens the next day to help them build their dam and to introduce him to Stan and Richie
Ben accepts, happy to finally have some new friends, and is excited to start using and improving his signing abilities more, and he fits right in with the four other boys
A few weeks later, Richie is on his way to meet up with Ben when he spots one of his fellow classmates, Beverly Marsh, out by herself
Beverly being alone wasn’t an uncommon sight, seeing how she wasn’t liked by any of the other girls her age, but that’s not what really catches his attention
What catches his attention about Beverly Marsh, is that she’s sitting by herself, eating an ice cream cone, and fingerspelling to herself
But not just fingerspelling
She’s fingerspelling fast
Quicker than Richie can, and so fast Richie can barely even understand what she’s spelling, and Richie’s been practicing fingerspelling since he was an infant
Richie figures that if she knows how to fingerspell, she probably knows how to sign too
So Richie walks over, sits down beside her, and starts to introduce himself to her using sign
Beverly looks at him, surprised and confused, before stopping him
She then verbally explains to him that she doesn’t know sign
Richie gets confused, and just says “Fingerspelling” and points to her hand
Bev then, almost sheepishly, explains that she doesn’t know how to sign, but her parents did teach her how to fingerspell
Her parents both took an ASL 1 class in college, and the only thing that long-term stuck with them besides a handful of basic signs, was the alphabet
So, they thought it would be fun to teach Bev how to fingerspell, and that became their thing
They were always fingerspelling around their house, and Bev became really good at it
Richie, impressed by her fingerspelling abilities, decides that she should become his, as well as his other friends’, friend
She can tell that Richie’s a good person at heart, even if he did act obnoxiously at times, and decides to accept his invitation
She gets introduced to their group, and all feels right
Then one day, the six friends run into Henry attacking someone in the Barrens, and they instantly jump in to help him
After successfully scaring Henry away, the kid introduces himself as Mike Hanlon
They notice he doesn’t know any sign, but they can also feel that he’s just meant to be apart of their friend group, so they invite him in
He accepts and is welcomed with open arms
Over the course of the summer, Richie, Eddie, Bill, and Stan teach their new friends how to sign
Ben already had a good grasp of the language, Bev knowing how to fingerspell helped them teach her quickly, and Mike was a fast learner and picked up signing fast
By the time the new school year starts, signing is definitely their preferred language to communicate in when they’re together
They even sign to each other during school, even if it’s in the middle of a lecture and they’re on opposite sides of the room
One day, Richie decides to take his friends to a local Deaf event
Derry may not have had a big Deaf community, but Richie and his dad were still big members of it and often held signing get-togethers since most people in Derry didn’t speak the language
Lots of people at the event were enthused to see so many young kids signing, even if they could speak, and the Losers have a great time together signing at the get-together
Richie, still a big music fan even though he can’t hear most of it unless it’s really loud or has a big speaker playing it so he can feel the vibrations of the music, loves getting his friends to sign along to songs with him
They all agree that signing along with songs is more fun than singing along to them (though that may be because none of them can really sing  anyway)
To conclude, the Losers all know how to sign and love signing to each other and support each other through thick and thin and agree that ASL is a great language that everyone should learn

Quick Hands - Prologue
Tumblr media
Summary: Bill Denbrough has been mostly deaf since the age of three years old after an accident that damaged his cochlea. Despite his challenges he makes some friends along the way.
A/N: The deaf!Bill au I came up with a multitude of hcs about a few weeks back, finally here in the form of a prologue to gauge interest.
Read it on ao3!
Taglist: @fuckboykaspbrak @thesquidliesthuman @rachi0964 @beepbeep-losers @bigbilliamdenbro @jalenrose1122 @sleepygaybrough @itandstrangerthingsfanfic @boopboopbichie @peachywyatt @aizeninlefox @sockwantstodie @ahoybyeler @yooonbum
Bill Denbrough wasn’t born without his hearing, most deaf people aren’t actually. For many it’s lost gradually over the course of a few years. For him, it was all in one day. He was three years old and outside playing catch with his dad, the blown up rubber ball flying through the air back and forth pretty steadily, he has good aim, at least for only being a toddler.
Zach throws the ball and it starts rolling past the small ginger and into the road. It looks pretty barren, so being his determined self he’d gone to retrieve it, leaving his father in the driveway. What he didn’t notice was a car on it’s way down the road from the side he didn’t look to. He’s too short to be seen by the driver through the window. Who would have known that a rubber ball would change the course of his entire life.
There’s a crash, something shifts. And after only a few moments, three year old Bill Denbrough is laying on the pavement, the car stopped in shock. His eyes closed, his face bleeding. It never should have happened, but it did, and he’ll be dealing with it now. He spends a few weeks in the hospital, at first it seemed dire but he made slow improvements.
His head was bandaged up, he responds to light and touch now when he’s awake, but sound doesn’t seem to break the barrier between him and others. He cries out and nobody knows why, and he doesn’t even know he has. The crash had caused damage to his cochlea and the small bones around his ear, particularly the anvil. He no longer has his hearing and it probably won’t be coming back.
His parents start him in speech therapy as soon as he’s healed enough. Sharon and Zach Denbrough don’t have the energy for learning a new language, especially one done entirely with the hands. The only intricate thing Sharon Denbrough does with her hands is play piano, and she fears that ASL would bring on arthritis or somehow inhibit her skills, and she isn’t willing to give that up after all those years of classical training.
He’s able to keep his voice, and he does talk, just not much. He’s never been a very confident child, but now he can’t even hear his own words as they exit his mouth, so he just mostly stops. He talks when he needs to, but after he turns five years old and starts kindergarten, he makes a friend named Eddie Kaspbrak.
Eddie Kaspbrak is a small firecracker, he’s loud and bossy at first, he’ll even talk for Bill in some events. Bill doesn’t mind though, at this point he doesn’t feel the need to be independent. As he grows older though, he starts nudging Eddie when he starts talking over him, wanting to be more self sufficient. Suddenly he’s the bossy one, and Eddie doesn’t mind. It’s nice to watch him grow into someone more confident.
Bill starts to learn sign too, he’s clumsy with his hands at first, but soon he uses it to communicate with everyone who understands it. Eddie is the first person he gives a sign name. Fire with an E hand. Eddie the firecracker.
His brother is born when he’s six years old. The lucky thing is, that unlike his parents, he can’t be woken by the cries of the new infant. Life is just as it should be for a while. He teaches the younger boy simple signs as he grows months older, though Sharon and Zach probably don’t even know as much as baby Georgie does, aside from the alphabet that they’d used mostly in the hospital to communicate.
Life goes on easy, he meets Richie Tozier on the playground when he’s seven years old. Richie is so loud when he laughs sometimes that Bill can hear his muffled cackle, not having full hearing loss, just enough not to be able to hear unless someone is shouting at him specifically. Bill learns Richie’s definition of “sex” in the second grade. It becomes his namesake, the sign for wise with an R hand. The name sticks even after the true fifth grade sex talk they get in health class, he’s proved himself in other ways.
Stanley Uris meets them soon after, it’s hard to come up with a name to call him, most signs that Bil relates to him all use really specific hand motions where he couldn’t incorporate Stanley’s s into them. Instead he takes to simply calling Stanley bird, mirrored by the dark haired boy’s interest in the species mixed with his tall and thin frame. Bird fits him nicely.
At some point in October in the sixth grade Bill’s little brother goes missing. This time he hears his mother’s cries at the funeral, but she doesn’t cry again after that.
Next comes in Beverly Marsh, a sweet face with green eyes and thin lips. Her worn sweater doesn’t make her seem lesser to Bill the way most people see her. Her name sign becomes “beautiful” with a B hand even before he talks to her, used only to his friends in otherwise empty rooms accompanied by happy noises. Once she joins the losers at their lunch table she learns her name sign but without an explanation as to what it means.
Ben Hanscom moves to Derry, Maine from Houston, Texas where he’s lived since he was a young boy. Originally, Bill and the losers refer to him as “outsider”. Soon enough though, they realize he’s quite like the rest of them. He becomes the sign “glue” with a B hand. It comes from a certain art class and a prank where Richie peels Elmer’s glue off his hand like dead skin and Ben almost threw up in the art room trash. It doesn’t contradict his role in the group though.
Finally, they Meet a boy named Mike Hanlon. Richie calls him homeschool, but Bill claims his name as “morning” with an M hand. He’s always up before the sun and with the rooster’s call, and always a brightening presence among the group. Now a group of seven, a lucky number in any of their books. A lucky friendship formed by unlucky experiences.

TWO HEADCANONS FOR YOUR MUSE THAT YOU’VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE :
sam is also a comic book nerd.  he’s fond of marvel and dc, and doesn’t understand the perceived hostilities from either side. in stanford, he was part of a comic book club, where he learned ASL to communicate with a number of the other members, as several were hard of hearing. similarly, sam does enjoy video games and other forms of entertainment, he simply rarely has the opportunity or time to experience them. the first games he played to completion -- and the only games he played to completion -- were donkey kong country and pokemon blue.
sam has attempted suicide.  several times, three by the time he’s 29. each time he’s either stopped himself or been stopped by someone else. he’s attempted suicide by drowning, mixing alcohol and pain medication, and hanging. the last attempt was at 29, attempting to hang himself in the medical facility he was then checked into, thinking of using bedsheet. he stopped because dean had come to visit him.
THREE THINGS YOUR CHARACTER LIKES DOING IN THEIR FREE TIME :
research. yep. sam really enjoys just perusing literary components, whether that be actual books or articles on the net, to learn more and as much as he can about all sorts of inhuman entities he has encountered or will encounter. it makes him feel prepared.
listening to podcasts. sam frequently listens to history podcasts and criminal drama podcasts -- investigative journalism tends to interest him, as would stuff like drunk history. i can also see sam listening to mbmbam from time to time.
reading. if sam has the time, he’s going to dig into novels he’s gotta catch up on. he keeps a few in the back of the impala, on the floor of the backseats.
SEVEN PEOPLE THAT YOUR CHARACTER LIKES / LOVES :
castiel
gabriel
bill denbrough
ellie williams
victor frankenstein
mason rodriguez
alucard
TWO THINGS YOUR CHARACTER REGRETS :
trusting ruby. self explanatory. he feels foolish for having been unable to gauge her true nature and falling prey to her machinations.
getting back into hunting. this is a complex regret, as sam does not regret saving everyone he’s saved. he enjoys the act of actually helping and eradicating malevolent entities. however, for obvious reasons, hunting has ruined his life and his happiness. without the element of being able to help or save someone else, sam would be completely broken.
TWO PHOBIAS YOUR CHARACTER HAS :
clowns - whether an internalized phobia created by an event sam cannot remember, or merely a disturbed feeling when viewing clowns, sam has a sharp fear of clowns. in reality, it’s a mix of having seen IT at a very young age, and an encounter with a clown performer who was not a clown, but a demon wearing the skin of one, who delighted in meeting the future boy king and could not stop itself from saying ‘hi’, which terrified sam. he was too young to remember the situation, only the fear.
small spaces - due to his confinement in the cage, sam becomes highly uncomfortable when trapped in rooms and small spaces he cannot feasibly get out of. similarly, restraints he is unable to escape from will upset him in the same way, for the same reasons. he has to be able to create an opening, or it’ll agitate his fear.
