oh frosty i am so so so glad you asked bc now i get to be insane.

(this got super long so I essentially have an essay below the cut. if you're curious about formula 1, give it a read!)

Ok so first let me get into a few key people in this. Lewis Hamilton is a 7 time F1 World Drivers Champion and he has the most race wins of anyone in F1 history. He is regarded as one the best if not THE best F1 driver of all time. He has been on the Mercedes team since 2013 and has won 6 of his WDCs with them.

However, in 2021, he lost the championship to Max Verstappen of team Red Bull in a controversial final race in Abu Dhabi. Max Verstappen has been the WDC since 2021, winning in both the the 2022 and 2023 season. His 2023 season broke records I believe, winning 19 out of 22 races. Not only is Verstappen an incredible driver, just a real force to be reckoned with on the race track, but Red Bull's F1 cars are just fucking insane, especially in 2022 and 2023 because of new regulations leading to a new designs. It literally sounds like a fucking rocket and he wins by large margins.

On the other hand, the Mercedes cars that dominate from 2013 to 2020 took a huge dip in 2022 due to the new designs because of new regulations, and Hamilton has been very vocal about these cars not being up to par. Hamilton has always been very loyal to Mercedes, so it came as an extreme shock when it was announced on Feb 1st that he would be moving to team Ferrari in the 2025 season. Like imagine if when Zayn left 1D he went to 5SOS. Or if a member of Stray Kids joined BTS. Idk what else to compare it to but it was fucking insane, which is why I got into F1 because I was like "ok idk what's going on but I do want to know." However, with Hamilton moving to Ferrari in 2025, this means that Carlos Sainz is essentially fired from Ferrari (also I should have mentioned this before, there are 10 F1 teams and each team has two drivers). Charles Leclerc is Ferrari's favorite, I've seen him being referenced as the 'Prince of Ferrari' by fans. So it came as no surprise that soon after Hamilton announced he's joined Ferrari in 2025, Sainz issued a statement that he and Ferrari would be parting ways at the end of 2024.

So now the definite line up for Ferrari in 2025 is Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen is also staying with Red Bull but the future of Sergio "Checo" Perez is uncertain. His contract is up at the end of 2024 and there have been rumors that he might be replaced.

Carlos Sainz has not signed with another team for 2025, at least not publicaly, so there is a lot of speculation on where he may go next. He is the only driver not from Red Bull who won a Grand Prix in 2023. Verstappen won 19, Perez won 2, and Sainz won 1. While everybody else I mentioned in this post did have a higher standing in the final rankings of the 2023 season, Sainz did get a trophy, and that's a result that matters.

2025 is going to be an incredible season to see the fight between Hamilton and Verstappen. Hamilton signing with Ferrari after finished 12 years with Mercedes shows he's really doing whatever is takes to get that 8th WDC, because that would make him the F1 driver with the most world championships of all time. Verstappen is a favorite to be the 2024 Champion, so he will probably be defending the title.

Now let's say that Perez doesn't renew his contract and Sainz has a good season this year. There is a non-zero chance that he could sign with Red Bull. Sainz was in their F1 academy, and he was beat out for the Red Bull F1 seat by Verstappen at the beginning of their F1 careers. I would literally do anything to see real hard racing between Carlos Sainz for Red Bull and Charles Leclerc for Ferrari, because frankly Ferrari keeps prioritizing Leclerc over Sainz, even if Sainz has a better pace. So to have the the 2025 lineup for Red Bull be Max Verstappen AND Carlos Sainz, while the fucking FERRARI team is Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc would be so insanely awesome.

seeing all the jokes about how anthony will just not stop complimenting ian -> hearing the reason of why he's been doing that in the letter vid made me CRUMBLE oh my god

like he's reflected on the fact that in the past he had become so self-conscious it prevented him from praising his best friend and now he's making 110% sure he doesn't repeat the same mistake. and now we see the rapid-fire compliments and appreciation and admiration, but it doesn't feel forced? it's like he's had it stored up for so long that he just wants to get it all out so he takes every chance he can get. i just think it's so sweet :') more!!! openness!! no more walls!!!

this!!! they're learning and growing and choosing to be better!!!! i'm so unbelievably happy for them.

the way anthony clearly thought the world of ian and their friendship but had his own stuff to work through, and now that he's grown he can express how much he values ian. it's such a beautiful story, and i respect anthony so much for recognizing what was actually holding him back and working through it

I think the only thing Ian was genuinely hurt by, only for a moment, was “I’m beginning to truly believe you’re not a good person anymore.” I think he’s done a lot of work on himself and he clearly has a lot of embarrassment thinking abt the person he used to be, but it can’t feel good to hear that from someone you love. the good thing was that immediately after he finished the letter, Anthony said “I don’t think you’re a bad person.”

oh god that was so hard to watch. if i was in ian's position i would have definitely cried lmao.

that moments was difficult and also when anthony said that he felt their best friendship started to deteriorate in 2009 and ian was a bit taken aback by how early that was :(

i'm so impressed by how much bravery it must have taken on both sides to be able to talk about the contents of the letter so openly. they've so obviously matured and grown so much from the dark days, and i feel privileged in a way to be able to watch them be so vulnerable.

it had to be done, i almost cried

i'm going to take this opportunity to be sappy, because truly until june 20th of this year, when ian and anthony dropped the insane bomb that they bought smosh, i didn't realize how much smosh meant to me. i've watched them since i was 10! it's been 11 years!!! i grew up watching them all throughout middle school and their content was always something i could rely on. i fell off a bit in high school bc life but still remember crying at the dining room table when anthony announced he was leaving smosh even though i was barely watching.

flash forward to now, i'm 21 and and was chilling in my college apartment just scrolling through tiktok when i saw someone causally mention ian and anthony bought smosh. and i thought it was a joke. it was so out of the realm of possibility and i had let go of the hope i'd ever see them together in a video again in like 2018. but it was true and i lost my fucking marbles. my love for smosh has gone through a renaissance, and watching ian and anthony is such a fucking joy. their journey has been so insane, and they just bring me hope that everything will work out and things will always end up the way they are meant to be.

I am still trying to process this entire letter but the thing that continues to stick out to me is that Anthony has felt like this since 2009 and how much small things that Ian said just stuck with him so much that eventually he thought his best friend resented him and how in turn it made him resent his best friend. The part where he says that he thinks that Ian is a bad person just killed me and I don't know how Ian kept a straight face through that. This entire video will haunt me for weeks.

oh absolutely. i haven't fully processed the video at all, and i know i'm going to rewatch it later today. i kept have to pause and take multiple breathers because some of the things anthony wrote about hit way too close to home.

in a way anthony describing the letter as "angry" is a bit misleading. the journal entry is honestly a love letter to an old friendship that's being grieved and it's filled with self loathing and resentment that i'm sure a lot of people can relate to, because unfortunately having those negative thoughts towards loved ones is part of the human experience.

the ian that anthony was so resentful towards was ultimately a version of ian that anthony had built up in his head, because the two of them weren't communicating. ian most likely had a version of anthony he unconsciously created that he also resented, and we can see that a bit when ian talked about being suspicious of anthony's motives for opening up to him in 2016. it's so beautiful that they were able to rebuild the trust between them, and it's clear how strong their relationship is now because they were able to discuss the letter in a healthy way.

As someone who joined the fandom way later and don't know the lore behind the letter(especially regarding his abusive ex??) this was a trip. I screamed when the letter turned negative.

oh boy, the ex of anthony's they're referring to was a fucking time. basically anthony was in a relationship with a woman named kalel smith from 2010 to 2014, and the two of them were actually engaged for a bit. they had a daily vlog channel together, but even from an audience pov things seemed off? ik fans of smosh and anthony got the vibe that she was using anthony for views, but who knows how bad things were behind the scenes. anthony also mentioned in his (now edited) second draw my life video that he felt kalel has manipulated and used him throughout their relationship, which caused her to go on a twitter rampage.

it was really interesting to hear how that relationship impacted ian and anthony's friendship. i know i've had close friends be in shitty relationships, and i've brought up my concerns to them when they weren't being treated the way they deserve to be, because i want what's best for them. since ian and anthony had lost that level of trust with each other, it really must have been a shitty time where ian saw that things were off but couldn't talk to anthony about it, and then anthony saw the messages and then didn't believe ian was coming from a genuine place.

hearing Shayne talk about Ian and Anthony actively choosing to be friends this time around reminded me of a quote from Lilypichu :)

“After a certain point, I like to think love is a choice. You have to choose to be with them every day, rather than expecting, you know, magic to happen 24/7. I think you have to try, and Michael makes me want to try all the time.”

she’s talking about the honeymoon phase here, but i really think it works in the context of Ian and Anthony’s friendship being stuck in that highschool-phase (+ literally “magic”!!), and how they are now working to have a healthier relationship.

when Anthony talked about Ian on The Yard podcast, he said “There’s so many years of things that just weren’t talked about, that I’m just super excited to actually hash it all out.”

I think it’s really cute that he was/is excited about every single aspect of becoming Ian’s friend again, even the hard and painful parts. In other words: Ian makes Anthony want to try all the time <3

I absolutely agree that love is a choice, you have to choose to foster the relationships you have with the people in your life or you're going to lose them, and that means either choosing to have the hard conversations or letting those relationships go. It's so awesome that they're able to choose each other again and rebuild that friendship.

I actually hadn't listened to the podcast you mentioned, so I quickly went and listened to the segment where Anthony talks about Ian. Here is the video, the link will start at a little bit before Anthony talks about Ian, but the topic they're discussing is what prompts Ian and Anthony's friendship being brought up.

I think what threw me for a loop is Anthony talking about how he and Ian had recently discussed how there was a time their respective girlfriends absolutely hated each other and they just didn't talk about it for five years. I literally had to pause the vid and take a lap because I remember when fans would speculate that this was true, but to hear Anthony confirm it was kind of insane. I was pretty young when all that drama went down, like 12 or 13 and I honestly didn't care at the time, so if someone wants to fill me in on what the heck he's talking about so I can be in the know that would be much appreciated <3

I re-listened to Anthony and Ian on Rhett & Link’s Ear Biscuits from 2014 - after seeing the letter video - and it was so interesting hearing them dance around the issues they were having at the time and in the letter.

Ian not expressing his emotions. Anthony trying to find his characters ‘voice’. Them both only hanging out to work, living in two different cities.

The peak - both of them being shocked that Rhett & Link would fight and spend ‘hours’ working on there friendship/communication when they could have been ‘working’.

Let alone Link’s questions throughout went to the heart of the matter and both of them struggled (and avoided) giving a honest/vulnerable answer.

Like for real though, the TRUST that Ian has in Anthony now is INSANE??!! Like tbffr if my best friend who I reunited with after a years long rift gave me an old letter where they said “I think you may not be a good person” I am taking that to HEART no matter what they said now!! But Ian knows???! that Anthony doesn’t mean it now, didn’t really even mean it then because he literally just trusts Anthony and believes in their friendship and it’s just???!! The emotional maturity of it all is like getting kicked by a horse

it really is just so fucking lovely to watch them be so emotionally mature. ian is much stronger than me fr, i would have burst into tears even knowing that my friend didn't mean what they wrote anymore.

major kudos to both of them, i really do wish them best and i'm so excited for the future of smosh now that they're back in charge.

These opening lines in a supposed 'angry letter' immediately struck me and I had to take a breather because it's just so?? sincere?? and loving?? And I feel like a lot of the time when they talk about the magic of their original highschool friendship it's mostly about how genuinely they were able to make each other laugh, so seeing the more emotionally significant side of that is OUGHHH. Even though they were young and bad communicators their relationship meant so much more than just shared comedy and I'll be stewing with this for a while 🥲

the way i immediately teared up at the beginning of the video because of this. it made me think back to anthony's 2013 draw my life video where he talks about becoming friends with ian, and they just make me so emotional. they were ordinary best friends who accomplished extraordinary things and that's what broke them
