I just did a binge (re)watch of 'The Smoke' with a baby Taron Egerton and now I really want to write a whump-found-family-redemption-hurt/comfort-fic where Kev basically becomes Asbo's pseudo dad.
(so depressed that there's none for me to read already
What do you mean there's no fics where Kev witnesses or deals with Gog's terrifying psycho-pathological physical and coercive control over Dennis/Asbo?)

“Hello?” You answer your phone that rang while you were at work.
“Is this (Y/N) (Y/L/N)?” The person asks, sounding very serious.
“Yes, it is. May I ask who’s calling?”
“This is Memorial Hospital. I am calling because you are the emergency contact for Dennis Severs. He has been admitted following a fire in the Blackwall Tunnel. He is currently undergoing an examination and is unconscious, but you are welcome to come up any time and wait until he is ready.” You were frozen. Terrified. Hearing that Dennis was injured, to an extent which you did not know, scared the shit out of you.
“O-okay, thank you for calling. I’ll be there soon.” You hang up as soon as you finish speaking, not wanting to hear the woman’s voice anymore. Tears pooled in your eyes as you tried to conceal them. You begin to pack your things, hoping that your boss would let you leave to be with Dennis.
“Cindy?” You knock on the door to her office. She invites you in within a second, and points for you to take a seat.
“I was wondering if I could leave early. I just got a call saying Dennis is in the hospital being treated for injuries he sustained while fighting a fire today. I want to go and make sure he’s not too hurt and that he’ll be okay.”
“Of course. I know how much you love that boy. Go. I will check in on you later, yeah? I hope everything is alright and he recovers quickly.”
“Thank you so much. I promise I will make up for today, I-”
“(Y/N), there is no need to. Go be with your boyfriend, don’t worry about anything other than him, okay?”
“Thank you so much, Cin.” After you give her a quick hug, you run out of the office and hop in your car, making your way towards the hospital you were told Dennis is at.
“Hi! I got a call saying my boyfriend is here,” you breathe out to the receptionist once you enter the building.
“Name?”
“Dennis Severs. H-he’s a firefighter.” She nods and clicks around the computer for a moment.
“He is currently still unconscious and still being examined, so if you would like to wait,” she points to a small waiting area, the empty chairs pointed towards a TV playing a news station, “I will have the doctor come get you when Mr. Severs is open for visitors.”
“Thanks,” you sigh, fear rising in your chest again after hearing that he’s still unconscious. So many thoughts were running through your mind right now. How bad were his injuries? Was he severely burned like Kev? Or did he break a bone? As much as you didn’t want to think about it, that was the only thing on your mind.
It was an agonizing two hours, but the doctor finally stepped into the waiting area, a pile of paperwork in his arms.
“Mrs. Severs?” He asks. You blush at the name, but you quickly correct him, informing him that you are just his girlfriend.
“He is still out, but you are welcome to see him now.” You stand and follow the man down the hall, stopping at a room in the middle of the hallway.
“He’s right in there. He is also with his boss, Mr. Allison, but he is out as well.”
“What exactly happened? How bad are his injuries?” It didn’t hurt to ask, even if he couldn’t tell you.
“His lungs are heavily coated in soot and smoke, but we have him on oxygen, so they should improve in a couple days. It seems like he took his mask off in the haze, but we won’t know what really happened until Mr. Severs is awake. I will get back to you on when he will most likely be released,” he explains quietly.
“Thank you, sir.” He gives you a gentle pat on the back before walking off down the hall. Slowly, you open the door, finding Dennis lying motionless on the bed closest to the door, the curtain drawn so your view of Kev was restricted; it didn’t bother you much, gave you some “alone time” with Dennis for the time being.
“Fuck, baby,” you whisper, taking a seat in the chair next to his bed. You grab his hand immediately, the tears finally streaming down your cheeks.
“I really hope you’re going to be okay. I need you to be okay, Den,” you whimper, leaning your face against his arm, silently praying that he wakes up fine.
You stay by his side for the next few hours, skipping out on eating and drinking anything.
“Ma’am, visiting hours are over,” a nurse pops her head through the door. Dennis still had yet to wake up, and you were growing much more anxious.
“I need to stay by him, I can’t leave him until he wakes up and I know he’s okay,” you plead, tears appearing once more. The woman gives you a sad smile before closing the door. You turn back towards Dennis, relieved that she allowed you to stay.
You didn’t get a good sleep throughout the night. Every hour, you would wake up and check on Dennis, only to find him still asleep, not having moved in over twelve hours. Finally, around six in the morning, a grip around your hand tightened, signaling you that Dennis had woken up.
“Babe? Wha’ are ya doin’ ‘ere?” He mumbles, still not fully coherent.
“I got a call at work yesterday that you were here, being treated after you were injured in the Blackwall Tunnel fire. I got here as soon as they called me. I was so worried about you, Den. They didn’t tell me how bad your injuries were, a-and I-”
“Shh, love. I’m alright,” he pauses to cough, tears brimming in his eyes due to the roughness. Your hand is still enclosed in his, your other softly stroking his forearm to comfort him in some way.
“Just inhaled a lot of soot and smoke ‘cause I took my mask off.”
“Why’d you do that?”
“Had to give other people a chance to breathe. They needed it more than I did. But, uh, the man that I gave it to didn’t make it,” his voice lowers, full of disappointment and self-hatred.
“Dennis, that is not your fault, okay? Please don’t think that. I may not know what exactly happened, but I know you would never be responsible for something like that.” Sure, you knew what you were saying, he was sort of responsible for killing Rosa’s baby.
“(Y/N), you know what happened that day, so don’t even begin to say that.” You sigh quietly, nodding along, knowing that he’s right.
“Doesn’t mean that you were responsible for this one,” you tell him in a whisper, squeezing his hand to assure him that everything will be okay. Dennis is silent after your response but reaches his free hand over to stroke your cheek.
“I’m gonna be fine, alright?” You nod and lean in to kiss him for the first time in a day.
The nurse comes in and offers Dennis some breakfast, which he so gratefully shares with you after hearing you hadn’t eaten since you got here. Once he finished, you made him take a nap to rest a bit more while you read a book, still staying by his side the entire time.
The sound of the door clicking open startles you a little, looking to see who was here. You offer a smile to the few members of White Watch as they enter the room, walking past you and towards Kev’s side of the room, which was now unblocked by the curtain. You could feel their gazes on you, and you were wondering why.
Your reading was interrupted by a young woman coming to stand next to where you sat. Gently setting your book down, you glance up at her.
“Hi, I’m Ziggy. If you don’t mind me asking, how do you know Asbo?” Asbo? Why would they call him that, you wonder. Pushing aside that question, you smile and grab Dennis’ hand.
“I’m his girlfriend,” you tell her politely, eyes darting across the room to the group of men standing around Kev.
“Asbo’s got himself a girlfriend? Wow, never would’ve known,” the man with curly hair says.
“Shut up, Rob. There’s a reason he’s called Asbo. Maybe he didn’t want to share too much of his personal information, unlike the lot of you,” Ziggy says to the same guy. They all laugh, leaving you feeling a little uncomfortable. You were still wondering why they called him Abso, when he’s never shown that sort of behavior around you.
An hour or so later, Dennis wakes back up, eyes roaming all over you as he admires you reading. When you notice he’s awake once again, you set your book down on the bedside table and move to sit on the bed next to him.
“Hey you. Have a good nap?” You ask, caressing his cheek. He gives you a warm smile and nods against your touch, leaning into it before he slowly sits up, puckering his lips. You laugh lightly and lean in, giving him a quick kiss, well aware of the group still watching you.
“Hey, why haven’t you ever mentioned this pretty girl of yours, Abso?” Rob wonders, coming around to place his arm around your shoulder, pulling you against him in a sort of welcoming hug. You accept it, wanting to be on good terms with the people Dennis works with.
Dennis stays quiet, fiddling with his hands, a blush creeping up his neck.
“Den?” You ask, reaching for his hand again. He looks up at you, a sad and lonesome look in his eyes.
“I was...scared of being made fun of, or told that I was lying. For some reason, when I told my mates that I got a girlfriend, and I showed them a picture of (Y/N), they all laughed in my face. Said I was sick for joking about something like that. Didn’t think that she was in my league at all, didn’t think I was good enough for someone like her. I actually don’t believe I am. (Y/N) really does deserve someone better than me. Someone-”
“Dennis Edward Severs, stop talking right now,” you command him, eyes narrowing at him as he gazes up at you shyly. The entire room is now silent, the others not knowing what to say and being taken aback by the sudden turn of the conversation.
“Guess I was just assuming no one else would believe me if my own mates didn’t,” Dennis adds, staring down at your entwined hands.
“I am so sorry, Asbo,” Ziggy speaks up, her hand coming to rest over her heart. The rest all apologize as well, each of them making a comment about how wrong they were about him.
By the end of everyone’s little speeches, including Kev, Dennis has a huge grin on his face, which warms your heart immensely.
“I love you, darlin’,” he whispers after the others go to Kev once more. You softly stroke his cheek with your thumb and stare into his shining green eyes.
“I love you too, Den. Always will.”
Dennis and Kev were both released from the hospital a couple of days later, and you hadn’t seen Dennis since then, after he practically forced you to go back to your shared apartment.
Unfortunately, he had to go back to work, along with Kev; although neither of them were aloud to go into a burning building for a while, they were still advised to be on the scene, helping at the truck.
Since you were going to be alone for the rest of the day, you decided to pay a little visit up at the station. You stopped by a florist on the way to get a bouquet of flowers, hoping that this visit would go smoothly.
Once you arrive, you head straight towards Kev’s office, after getting directions from Big Al, the head chief. When you find the right room, you quietly knock, then walk in after Kev tells you to.
“Hi. I don’t know if you remember, but I’m (Y/N), Dennis’ girlfriend,” you tell him, hesitantly walking towards his desk where he sat.
“Ah yes. Dennis’ secret girlfriend. What can I do for you, love?”
“I wanted to personally thank you for saving Dennis. He told me that you were looking for your girlfriend, or fiancee, at the time, and you stopped to help him. I can’t thank you enough,” as you start your little speech, you hand him the flowers. He smiles up at you, motioning for you to sit down after sensing that you had more to say. You pause for a moment, trying to find the courage to say what you wanted to.
“I’m pregnant,” you admit, watching Kev’s eyebrows raise in surprise and his smile widen. “And if Dennis would have died, I don’t know what I would’ve done.” Your voice is quick to cut off, your emotions taking over, getting choked up just thinking about the different outcomes.
Kev seems surprised yet happy. Surprised that Dennis, the anti-social rookie, is soon going to become a father, and happy that he made the right decision to save him, no matter how much trouble he thinks the guy is.
“I wasn’t going to let him die there, not even after what he did. I know he’s a good man, and Gog was the one who instigated the fire. Anyway, congratulations to both you and Dennis. And thank you for the flowers. I’m gonna call Dennis in here and I’ll give you two some time alone. When he gets here, tell him I said he’s got the rest of the day off. Enjoy some time together, yeah?” He smiles earnestly at you, paging the break room and asking for Dennis. After a couple minutes, Dennis appears in the doorway, a questioning look on his face, which quickly fades away when he sees you.
“Hey, love. What’s up?” He wonders, striding over towards you and grabbing your hands. Kev stands up and pats Dennis on the back, leaving to give you two some time.
“Um, I came here to thank Kev for saving you during the fire. I, uh, I don’t know what I would’ve done as a single mother,” you casually slip in the mention of you being pregnant. Dennis is quiet as he takes in what you just said.
“Wait, what? Why would-” he gasps, finally understanding what you meant.
“You’re pregnant?” He confirms, eyes widening as he stares at you, waiting for your response. All you could muster was a nod and a small smile, and within a second, Dennis had pulled you up and out of your seat, into his arms. He spun you around, makign sure he didn’t whack you against any furniture. When he was done, he set you back down and grabbed your face with his hands, leaning down to press a hard kiss to your lips. You sigh happily against him, melting into his touch. After he pulls away, one of his hands travels down to your stomach, gently rubbing over your shirt.
“I love you. So damn much. I can’t believe I’m gonna be a dad. I can’t believe we’re going to have a baby,” he whimpers, tears falling down his cheeks as he comes to the realization. You giggle and wipe his tears away, resting your hand on his cheek.
“I know. It’s crazy how a couple days ago, you were in so much danger, almost dead. But you’re still here, soon to be a father.” Dennis smiles and nods, bringing you in for one more kiss.
“Life’s crazy, innit?”

Every passing moment was pure torture. Nothing in this world could ever go right for y/n and for the first time in a while, it was catching up with her. She sat on the sofa in the dark as she let her tears fall down her cheeks. Her heart ached and all she wanted was her boyfriend to wrap his arms around her, kiss her and tell her that everything was going to be ok. She felt safe with him. He was her rock. Dennis was the only one that made her feel like a priceless treasure and to treat her with the love and respect and love that she deserved and more. Y/n bit her lower lip as the thoughts ran through her head. ‘You’ll never be loved!’ ‘You’re worthless and disgusting!’ ‘You’re better off alone!’ were among the many things she was hearing in her head and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t push the thoughts away. Y/n stayed on the sofa and let the tears flow freely as she waited for Dennis to get home so that she could hug him and kiss him and just be in his warming presence.
Y/n had been so caught up with her thoughts that she didn’t hear Den walk through the door and walk toward her. “Why are you sitting in here with the lights off?” Dennis chuckled slightly, not realizing that his girlfriend needed him. He turned on the light and she jumped. When Dennis turned back to face her, his heart sank at the sight. “Oh my darling. What’s the matter?” He asked gently as he enveloped her in a bear hug. Dennis’ bear hugs were her favourite because, as previously said, she felt safe and at home in his arms. “Want to talk?” He tried again. Y/n shook her head and buried her face in his strong chest the best she could and began to sob. Dennis knew right away that her insecurities were getting the best of her and there was only one thing he could think of that would make her feel better. He pulled away from her enough to place his lips on hers in a loving and tender kiss. Y/n’s heart fluttered and she slightly smiled against his lips.
They broke apart and Dennis walked to their stereo and played a song that he had found recently that he wanted y/n to hear. He wanted to take her pain away and make her feel so loved and safe with him. He wanted her to know that no matter what her thoughts were, he wasn’t going anywhere...ever! Dennis made sure to put the song on repeat and went to turn the living room light off so that the only light shining on them came from the street lights below them. Dennis took her in his arms once again and allowed her to lay her head on his shoulder as he gently swayed them to ‘Your Song’ by Elton John. Dennis hummed along to the words as he carefully spun y/n around and back into his arms. They swayed to the music until y/n was smiling genuinely and then some. Y/n felt her heart grow larger with love and adoration for the man in front of her. He always managed to pull her from the darkness in her mind and make her feel like she was truly the light of his life.
“This is a very pretty song. Thank you Den for doing this. I really do love you and I’m sorry that you always have to do this. It-” She spoke just as Dennis cut her off with a short but sweet kiss. “Darling, Look at me. you are everything to me and nothing will ever change that. I promise that I will never leave you ok? You are my world and I need you as much as you need me. I love you and I’ll never stop, because the truth is that I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Dennis spoke sincerely. Y/n started crying again at his words and she gave him a bright smile. “I love you so much Den. Always have and I always will.” She said before she kissed him and wrapped her arms around his waist as he gave her yet another one of his loving bear hugs.
