Menewood is out now!
The second novel about Hild of Whitby MENEWOOD was ublished 3 October. It's a big book. Why? And what's in it? And how come it's so very beautiful?
The second novel about Hild, Menewood, is out now in North America in hardcover, audiobook, and ebook, and in the UK in audiobook and ebook, with the hardcover available in late November. It has a gorgeous cover by Anna and Elena Balbusso—the same artists who painted the Hild cover. And, as with Hild, I forgive the anachronisms because it’s just too beautiful to mess with. The Balbusso twins…

Anna and Elena Balbusso Twins, Tomato Picker, 2021.
"The tomato picker is imprisoned by the branches and roots like chains of the tomato plants. It is a symbolic image to raise public awareness on the problem of the exploitation of seasonal agricultural workers. It is a worldwide problem. In this pandemic period, the condition of these workers is even more serious."

Ecce Hild! The art and craft—and work, so much work—of early-medieval embroidery
Textile production in Hild's time was art, craft, and work—a staggering amount of work. I take a detailed look at one small panel: Hild, embroidered by Joi the artist, in wool on plain cotton—an interpretation of the Balbusso twins' MENEWOOD cover art.
Last night I did a book event at Village Books in Bellingham. It was a lovely event—but that’s not what I’m here to talk about today. One of those in audience (@Joi_the-artist on Xitter) brought me a marvellous piece of embroidery she’d made, interpreting the cover of Menewood into a Bayeux-style embroidery panel. About the Embroidery Here are some thoughts from Joi—and three of her…

Gorgeous, slipcased editions of public domain classics
Tumblr media
Since 2017, Beehive Books has been kickstarting *gorgeous*, slipcased, oversized new hardcover editions of beloved public domain classics, lavishly illustrated by the best artists working today.
https://beehivebooks.com/
After they fulfil their Kickstarter pre-orders, Beehive lists the remaining stock on their site at $100 each. They've just listed three new titles:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I. Peter Pan (illustrated by Brecht Evens)
https://beehivebooks.com/shop/peterpan
II. The Blazing World (illustrated by Rebekka Dunlap)
https://beehivebooks.com/shop/the-blazing-world
and
III. Crime and Punishment (illustrated by Dave McKean)
https://beehivebooks.com/shop/crime-and-punishment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All three are stupendous, readable works of art, but I was absolutely gobsmacked by McKean's work on Crime and Punishment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The book showcases McKean's virtuosity in all its dimensions: stark monochrome charcoal drawings, lavish mixed-media collages, and gripping full-page paintings.
Tumblr media
Of course, I'm biased. Early in my career, McKean did an incredible, unspeakably amazing cover for my novel SOMEONE COMES TO TOWN SOMEONE LEAVES TOWN, art-directed by Irene Gallo.

I'm grateful to Beehive for my review copies of these three books. Beehive is running another Kickstarter pre-order campaign for its next three books:
