Turkish Delight

The man had seemed suspicious to Yezda from the start. He claimed his name was Akram and that he wished to join the small PPK unit that the Kurdish female fighter was leading in eastern Turkey. “I had no notification of a new recruit,” the unit commander said to the new arrival suspiciously after encountering him on the Black Sea shore, “besides what is that accent?” Akram tried to explain to the woman he was an Iraqi Kurd. “I just want to make a contribution, Commander Mohammedi,” he insisted. Yezda, clad in a long dress and tight headscarf to avoid arousing suspicion in this conservative part of Turkey, went to her portable radio set. “I need to check.” she told Akram.

At that moment the man snarled, leaping on the young woman, fingers reaching for her throat. Yezda was well trained however. Even as the two tumbled into the sand, the Kurdish fighter was able to break Akram’s hold around her neck by smashing the backs of her hands into his wrists. Then she drove her knee powerfully into her attacker’s groin. Akram, hands clutching his privates and gasping in agony had effectively surrendered even before Yezda had drawn her lethal looking dagger. The woman rolled the man, still groaning in pain, onto his front and tightly bound his wrists behind his back with his own scarf. She pulled him to his knees, even as the other members of her six woman unit hurried to the scene. “What’s happening, Commander?” Zerya demanded. “A spy.” replied Yezda, triumphantly standing over her tied, kneeling and humbled male opponent. “Who wishes to commence the interrogation, girls?”

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE 1963

The Walther LP53 Luftpistole air pistol that was held by Sean Connery in publicity material. The pistol belonged to photographer David Hurn, on whose work the poster art was based.

It was sold at Christie’s auctioneers in London in November 2010 for a whopping £277,250 ($431,840) - more than ten times its estimated £15,000 - £20,000 selling price.

Why was Bond wielding an LP53 in the poster, and not the customary PPK? Because the crew forgot to bring one to the shoot. It so happened that David Hurn was an air pistol enthusiast, and he had his LP53 with him at the time.

The look of the LP53 in Bond’s hand was a popular image, and the gun was re-used in the Japanese publicity material for Goldfinger.
