Steel, wood, fishskin. 171.2 cm / 64.4 in; blade: 129 cm / 50.7 in PROVENANCE Private collection, USA The use of Two-Hander Swords such as these could only be used by muscular individuals fighting on foot; they have no real place in the close press of battle. In the 15th C. men began to use them in single-fights and in the defence of Castle or town walls, & occasionally they were employed on the field of battle by picked men detailed to guard the banner. In the 16th C. The Swiss & the Landsknechte adopted the two-hander for this purpose, along with halbediers, to guard the Cantonal or Company Colour. Giacomo de Grassi, late in the 16th C. Praises it: “One may with it, as a galleon among many Gallies, resist many swords and other weapons, therefore in the wars it is used to be placed near unto the Ensign, for the defence thereof because being of itself able to contend with many it may better safeguard the same. & because its weight & bigness require great strength, therefore these only are allotted to the handling thereof which are mighty and big to behold, great & strong in body & of stout and valiant courage” In Tudor England, Colour guards who carried two-handed swords were known as “whifflers” (an onomatopoeiac word?) & their weapons were sometimes referred to as ‘slaughter swords’.
