Thinking about how we, as a fandom, seemed to have forgotten the ridiculousness of the mistletoe tradition. Oh, to be kissed by a stranger under a parasitic plant in public! Why yes, sign Dream up.
Thinking about Hob decorating the New Inn for Christmas. Dream drops in unexpectedly (but certainly not unwelcome) as usual, curious to see Hob draping multicolored lights along the open shelves of liquor behind the bar.
“What are you doing, Hob?”
“What does it look like I'm doing?” and Hob would turn back to his work, and Dream would watch, fascinated. Listening to the cheery music playing through the speakers, listening to Hob speak of the centuries past, how the celebration of the Christmas holiday had been pretty steadily thus since the mid 1800’s.
“The pagan holiday?” Dream would inquire, dragging his fingers along the taped up holiday cards along the backsplash of the bar, like moth’s wings stuck out and on display. Some even transferring soft glitter on Dream’s fingers, making him rub them together curiously.
“Well,” Hob would shrug with a grin. “The Christian bastardization of it.”
“Hardly,” Dream mused. “The Romans celebrated Saturnalia in this time, honoring the god with a feast and gifts.”
“No foolin’, eh?”
And, since it was late and Hob was feeling good about the work he’d done, he’d pour Dream a glass of red and offer him a seat, both of them sitting at the bar and admiring the twinkling lights, the smell of pine from the fresh garland, the garish oversized stockings tacked to the walls, and– Dream noticed with puzzlement, a single bunch of berries and leathery leaves hanging from the ceiling in the middle of an archway.
“I do not recognize this.”
Hob followed his friend’s gaze and, “oh,” he’d laugh. But it sounds… off-kilter, nervous or embarrassed.
“It’s mistletoe. Just this– parasitic plant–”
“Why does it have a bow on it?”
“For fun.” Hob would level Dream with a look like, lighten up. Get into the spirit.
“Elaborate.”
And Hob would hmm and haa about this relatively silly tradition about kissing under a mistletoe, how the “rule” had kind of faded away in the past decade or so, but it was still a fun little thing and Hob, ever the purveyor of all things dreadfully human, wants to keep the tradition alive, even if no one really follows along anymore.
And Dream, knowing full well he doesn’t need an excuse to kiss his immortal, very human partner, decides to humor Hob.
He slips from his seat, hearing Hob snicker from behind him, probably knowing full well what he’s about to do, and Dream walks to stand directly under the plant.
The bar is closed, no one else is in the building, but Hob looks around anyway, like there would be anyone else who would take advantage of this opportunity. Dream has to physically bite down a delighted smile as Hob shrugs– well if no one else will– and all but jumps from his stool, slowly walking toward Dream with his hands in his jeans’ pockets.
Without even touching Dream, Hob leans in and pecks him on the mouth.
Dream’s brows rise up to his hairline. “Is that it?”
“I’m afraid so, love.” He points up to the plant above them. "They don’t hang these in public places for full blown make out sessions, you know.”
“Hm…” Dream considers this, and decides if the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe only yields one chaste thing, then he’d have to start collecting them enough to make something substantial out of it.
Cue the ridiculous montage of Hob finding Dream in various locales, venues, anywhere he’s at (even at a holiday staff party) and in all manner of positions, under a mistletoe.
“Was that even there before?” Hob would ask, a red solo cup in his hand and smirking like a fool at the sight of Dream slouching against the wall, a– quite large actually– mistletoe dangling from the ceiling above his head.
“Does it matter?” Dream would counter and Hob would shrug, fair enough, and acquiesce to the plant’s demands. It was a Christmas tradition, after all.
Or Hob entering his office at work and finding Dream draped across his desk, holding a plastic mistletoe that looked like it was bought at a drug store high above his head.
Hob would take a few moments to stand and stare, enamored by this ridiculous creature.
“You know how much I love you?” It’s not what Hob meant to say, he was going to quip something about dramatic Endless and their need for attention, but he’s so gone over Dream that his mouth barely cooperates with his brain in these situations.
Dream would preen, stretching his long legs down so they dangle off the edge of the desk, like a cat sunning himself, shaking the plastic plant for emphasis.
“You could show me.”
This is their new tradition, every Christmas season. Hob finds Dream everywhere in the waking world, distracting Hob, raising eyebrows, and starting up strange rumor mills. But it’s in the privacy of his own home, coming back from work, and finding Dream wailing desperately against the foyer of his kitchen, a planted mistletoe hanging from the ceiling, as usual.
“Oh, Hob Gadling,” Dream would cast an arm over his eyes. “How I’ve waited for you to come back and free me from the spell these dreadful berries have put me under.”
“Okay,” Hob would grin, biting back a laugh. “Would a kiss suffice?”
Dream would be hanging off the wall, his long, rail thin limbs bent at every angle under faux duress.
“Oh! It might do. I feel shackled under this strange power this greenery emanates.”
“Dream of the Endless,” Hob would tease, dropping his bag and taking off his coat as he walks to his impossible lover. “Brought down by a common earthly sprout.”
“Yes, yes, now will you get over here?”
And once Hob is within arms reach, laughing hard enough to wheeze, Dream would grab him by the shoulders and pull him in.

- He was adopted by Laura and Thomas but Tricia is their biological child.
- Struggled a lot with identity issues when growing up because he didn’t know much about his birth family.
- Laura being the angel she is worked extra hard to make sure Craig was in touch with his birth culture. Took him to a lot of events and tried to cook the food to the best of her ability.
- Out of all the families in South Park I think the Tucker family is the healthiest.
- Craig decided to not put a label on his sexuality. He just wants to go with the flow and see where life takes him.
- That being said it took a long time for him to accept he was attracted to guys. He had a lot of internalised homophobia because of the culture in South Park.
- He was petrified when he realised he had feelings for Tweek.
- I think his family were his rock during this time.
- Still flips everyone off. He thinks it’s peak humour (dumbass).
- Plays football 100%
- Dies when he sees that Tweek is cheering for him on the sidelines.

Watching Hannibal for the first time Ep 4-7
Let's just speed run to the good stuff because it gets nasty at episode six.
Ep 4. It's fine, crazy women forcing kidnapped boys to kill their families. Hannibal manipulates Abigail into viewing him as some kind of father figure.
Ep 5. A man dying of a brain tumor turns people into angels, via a modified blood eagle. Also, Morpheus's wife is dying of cancer, I know that's not his name, but I'm calling him that. To me, the most important thing is the mention of the Chesapeake Ripper.
This shot. Sensational.
Episode Six. EPISODE FREAKING SIX. So much happens.
An asylum inmate murders a nurse in a similar way to the Chesapeake Ripper. We meet a guy named Dr. Chilton, he is a douche-canoe, who thinks his patient is the Ripper. It's not, because it's Hannibal of course. He is the Ripper and the possibility of some NPC taking his glory. Sets him off on a spree. That leads us right into Episode seven.
Freddie also comes back in Ep 6. Will is incredibly sassy to her, I loved it. Freddie is a condescending narcissist, who dresses like an evil American Girl Dool.
Episode seven, gets a kiss, for opening with an homage to The Shining. The set design for that bathroom was so beautiful.
Anyway, Hannibal is on a rampage, in episode seven. The montage of him looking through his recipe box and then the Rolodex. THE ROLODEX of business cards. Then the dinner party at the end, where everyone claps for him. It is so clearly masturbatory for him. I really want to know why he chooses certain people. Will makes it clear that Ripper views his victims as pigs, but why these people?
Hannibal crying at the opera recital is interesting, I think there is something in Hannibal that's human, and I hope that's explored.
While all of this is happening, Will is slowly slipping into insanity, because he cannot separate himself mentally from Hobbs the guy he killed in episode one. Morohious is also wrecked from the loss of a previous partner who was killed by the ripper, possibly not eaten?
All in all, I'm loving this. I need more stylish cannibals with a murder Rolodex.

!!! YES <- hook up a generator to him he is stimming- ok so I have answered this in another ask BUT I'll go into detail in this one theres the spoiler free one, this one will be 100% spoiler
OK so.... oh my god where do I even start. there's so much I do not expect you to read this LMAO but thank you for the opportunity to talk about this
ok so it's a visual novel. and you can play six different versions of the same story (volume 1 being Asra, Nadia, and Julian, with volume 2 being Muriel, Portia, and Lucio) and honestly, volume 1 is the strongest imo THATS NOT TO SAY VOLUME 2 ISNT GOOD I just love volume 1 because it's GENUINELY just the same exact story from different perspectives whereas volume 2 takes creative liberties (especially Portias route which is sad because I love Portia as a character but her route is so disconnected from the others that I don't like it that much) ANYWAY ANYWAY enough opinions let's get into the lore (actually while I'm on the topic, based on the plot of each route? honestly the best way to play would be Nadia->Julian->Asra->Muriel->Lucio <- Portia's story is disconnected from the rest so it doesn't fit into this? (which makes sense considering she hasn't been in town as long as the others so she isn't involved in their stuff) but you kind of do need to play Julian's route beforehand if for no other reason than to get a feel for Mazelinka's character and Portia's backstory)
as far as lore. I guess I will start at the beginning, Montag Morgasson (better known as Count Lucio now) is part of a tribe known as the Scourge of the South, and his mom was the leader so he was kind of entitled, he felt like he would have power handed to him when he turned 18 but that didn't happen! his mom just cut him off. so Lucio gets mad and tries to bargain with the wyrm Vlagnagog, only to mistakenly summon demon Vlastomil as Vlagnagog has been shriveled up for a while now from not getting any sacrifices. anyway Vlastomil promises to help Lucio weaken his parents via Pestilence in exchange for their hearts. Lucios dad is bedridden and Lucio kills him, but he cannot kill Morga as she's not so easily defeated. she decides to spoil him one last time by letting him free in combat, as she cannot bear to kill her own son
AND SIDE NOTE I absolutely love seeing the naming convention of The Scourge of the South like Morga gave birth to Lucio so he is Lucio Morgasson (Morga's Son) and Morga also occasionally introduces herself as Morga Eirsdottir, assuming one of her parents was Eirs, probably her mother
ANYWAY because the deal is not fulfilled, red beetles start following Lucio around (he has a complicated relationship with beetles but I won't get into that rn) and with them, the red plague. Lucio starts doing mercenary work so all over the world this plague is happening, but Lucio doesn't seem to realize it's his fault, the beetles are following him. he just keeps making deals and not fulfilling them because he doesn't understand, when you don't uphold your end of a magical bargain, it has a way of punishing you. this will come back to bite him later and he develops a huge fear of death when he realizes he'll never be able to pay off his debt, later leading him to bargain with The Devil, but we're not there yet
where were we! Mercenary work! ok so at some point Julian left Nevivon for Prakra to study under Nazali, and he ends up on the battlefield with Lucio, as a doctor. he amputates Lucios arm. during this battle, the count of Vesuvia who he's fighting for sees this sacrifice and resolves to make him the new count iirc. so that's how he rose to power (I'll go into other character backstories here in a minute)
Lucio throws a bunch of parties and bullies local homeless kids as count, two of those being Muriel and Asra. I'll explain their deal once I'm done explaining Lucio bc he truly is the central character here, he's where all the conflict comes from. just keep that in mind
he also marries Nadia, trapping her in a hopeless marriage while he has endless affairs with the other nobles. but she doesn't care bc she doesn't even wanna be married in the first place. she's just being treated as eye candy like she has her whole life and she's resigned to her fate (SAD)
so because he's staying in the same place. he catches the Red Plague. and he tries to do this whole ritual (it's really long to explain) to get a new body, but BOOM Asra sabatoged it! he put pomegranate juice in instead of Lucios blood so the ritual would fail (the ritual was to fuse Lucio with the Devil) but now he's just stuck as this ghost goat in between dimensions
the game starts three years after this takes place, and it is your job to solve the "murder" and I think that brings me to Julian because he's a pretty important piece there
so Julian, big brother of Portia, was born to a rich family, the Devoraks, but one day the ship crashed, killing his parents, and leaving salt seals to save he and Portia's life. later, pirate Mazelinka found them and took them to Nevivon to be raised by the grandmas, a loving community of elderly salt miners and here they spent their childhood. Julian was taught how to read and write by Mazelinka's girlfriend Lilinka, and Portia felt left out. she felt left out in a lot of ways, like this and then, she wasn't even old enough to remember their parents. she's just always felt left out. anyway adding salt to the wound Julian goes off to study medicine in Prakra, leaving Portia behind once again
Julian was also working during the Red Plague, under the palace head doctor Valdemar (ooooooh don't even get me started on the courtiers or ill never shut up) he was trying to find a cure, when his Apprentice succumbed to the illness. then he also caught it, and because of his near death experience, he was visited by the Hanged Man, who revealed to him the cure to the plague was to kill Lucio. so Julian escaped the dungeon where he had been locked in to focus on his cure, and he tried to kill Lucio, but by the time he got there the room was on fire. him being there, though, gave courtiers a reason to pin the blame on him later and the ritual made everyone lose their memories so he couldn't even dispute it
OK and then Asra's parents made Lucio a metal arm when he lost his, and he locked them up for it, leaving Asra homeless. here he met Muriel, who was also homeless due to his parents giving him away to save him from a raid by the Scourge of the South. their whole childhood they lived on the docks with Lucio harassing them. now, what they didn't know was that Asras parents? they made a deal with the Devil. Lucio physically could not hurt Asra. however, Lucio would threaten Muriel to do things by claiming he would hurt Asra if he did not comply. Lucio told Asra the same thing but for Muriel, using their love for each other to control them. Muriel def got the worst of this imo, he was forced to kill people and rabid animals in gladiator battle with the stage name being the name of the tribe who killed his whole family. Asra merely had to help Lucio with magical things. Muriel kept all this a secret from Asra bc he didn't want him to feel bad
God there is so much more and thats not even scratching the surface but my fingers hurt so bad from typing so I'll have to stop 😭 thank you this was fun

here’s a really long analysis of cady’s arc in the mean girls musical because i think my favourite version of cady heron is the version from the stage musical.
while the original movie version is absolutely brilliant of course, there’s something about the way the stage musical portrays cady’s arc. i feel like each of cady’s songs really progresses her arc in a way that isn’t done to the same extent by the movie. obviously i know that’s partially because the writers of the stage musical had time to improve on the original and truly think on how to portray cady’s arc.
in it roars, cady’s dissatisfaction with her life in africa and her initial awkwardness in high school is showed brilliantly. though we do see cady’s awkwardness in the movie, we don’t see her feeling less satisfied with her life in africa and I thought that was a brilliant addition.
stupid with love is such a brilliant song. i didn’t truly appreciate it until i watched the new movie :/ anyway getting her internal monologue on aaron and her history with love is a brilliant insight. and honestly i appreciated her crush on aaron a lot more in the musical because of this song. also i liked the bits like ‘do you have an eraser?’ ‘i would love to’ because they’re hilarious
apex predator is an interesting one. i haven’t watched the musical in a while but i’m pretty sure in the stage version gretchen finds out sbout cady’s crush on aaron in this song. so seeing cady’s realisation that she’s not entirely safe with this new “friend” of hers. i don’t remember getting as much of cady dwelling on this in the original movie but i liked seeing it in the musical.
stupid with love (reprise) is a song i don’t have too much to say about, but i liked cady pretending to be bad at math being more of an accident here. it seems to show cady as a little more sympathetic, but still a bad person because of her keeping up the act
i also don’t have too much to say about revenge party apart from it being a good montage of cady, janis and damien’s plan. and the focus on cady ending up with aaron is interesting, showing how cady’s fixated herself on getting with aaron. cady also only agreeing to crack gretchen because of aaron is interesting. the musical puts a lot of focus on cady trying to use manipulation as a way of getting aaron (the taking down of regina, her pretending to be bad at math and the party scene). and i liked that focus.
fearless. this sows the seeds for cady becoming the new queen bee, with gretchen instantly turning to admire cady. we also see this with regina’s part, in her observation of the ‘new hair, new skirt’ - representative of cady’s personality changing. it also shows a bit of manipulation on cady’s end (i did it for me, sure, but also for you) but mostly i think she’s just happy she won. idk i don’t listen to fearless enough to analyse it
am i the only one who imagined a timeskip between fearless and stop? anyway
stop shows cady’s fixation on aaron; talking about her failing math and damien saying ‘my god girl, he’s just a guy’ showing that damien and janis have started to pick up on cady’s changing. also showing that cady can’t stop herself from fixating on aaron. which again. i think that’s very prominent in the musical
more is better is a song i’m salty about being cut from the new movie. i could soend an eternity analysing ut, like the start when cady stops herself from talking about the animals she observed because she fears it will be cringe. or the slower speed of this song contrasting the faster paced songs she sang at the start of the musical. or the fact tbat she’s adopted regina’s sentiment of ‘more is always better’. the mentions of stars and how cady almost sounds wistful. showing that she doesn’t want to be trapped in the role of queen bee anymore either. and showing that she misses the simplicity of her old life. then her bringing it back to the way she’s started dressing. and then that moment when aaron sees that cady has become a plastic; except i liked it more in the musical because you could see the lead-up to his realisation in the verses samg before. when aaron drops the line ‘i would prefer the girl you were’, i believe cady truly realises that she wants to change. obviously the janis bit adds to that as well, but this moment is very profound. then aaron turns cady’s own words back on cady and cady finishes by repeating his sentiment; that she should have thought everything through properly. i might make a post just about this song tbh.
someone gets hurt (reprise) i mean what do i say. this is the big moment where everything falls apart for cady. where she loses her two best friends. and realises she’s become plastic. this paired with more is always better earlier makes these moments incredibly profound.
do this thing is about cady embracing herself again. its a nerdy song, with kevin’s rapping and cady hyping herself up, telling herself she can do it. this song is cady rebecoming herself. also the fact that she solves the final problem in front of aaron, instead of him being absent like in the original movie makes her win more profound. and her realisation that leads her to her speech in i see stars. when watching clips of that song cady seems so genuinely happy and i think that’s what makes this song brilliant.
i see stars. a brilliant finale to the musical and casy’s arx. her realisation that everyone is beautiful and deserves to be seen. and loved. it’s a beautiful song that i sing to motivate myself. the passion in cady’s voice as she sings it makes me trult happy as well, as you can tell she truly believes her own words. its a brilliant song and the rest of the actors joining in at the end makes it more beautiful; she’s convinced everyone of her words. also the line ‘it’s me and you, not us and her’ makes me so happy; showing that people don’t have to gang up on each other.
in conclusion, i’ve said my piece. cady heron is incredible in the original movie and the stage musical, but the way all her songs show her arc in the musical make me prefer it ever so slightly than the arc in either of the films.

it's 1:21pm and I have laundry to do AND Easter Vigil service starts at 8pm, can I get this all watched before 7pm?
Or am I gonna sit there in church vibrating in place for two hours knowing I have three minutes left on the episode or some bullshit lol
(That's longer than usual, yes. Easter Vigil is actually one of my fave services of the year--we start outside lighting candles (the ones inside have been out since Thursday night, even the one we otherwise never put out), then walk into the dark church, then sorta speedrun bits of the old testament (with a hymn after every reading) and then we decide OKAY IT'S EASTER NOW :D and turn on the lights and make a lot of noise and sing a few more hymns--we don't sing or say alleluia during Lent so all the hymns have that in it. There's often MASSIVE amounts of church incense, too. Anyway by the end it's a bit of a party. Apparently some churches have an actual party after the service.)(side note if you're new-ish to these posts that I'm Episcopalian, like, the priests at my church are a gay man and a woman, we're cool people mostly I promise)
See this is why these posts take forever. Why do I keep infodumping shit. This is what it's like to watch things with me in person, though.

oh god so Shadow Weaver basically drags off Adora, Catra's like "I'll catch up, okay?" and Adora's like "no no Catraaaaa" her voice is cracking and everything, she doesn't want to do this without her and also worries about Catra and that tentacle monster thing
I'm not gonna screenshot it but poor Glimmer is fighting her dad, who is still chipped and Evil.
Bow is fighting Scorpia, also chipped and Evil. Oh hey Melog shows up and makes Bow invisible.
Micah is MEAN when chipped. He calls Glimmer a failure.
Glimmer: "My mother raised me to be brave. My friends taught me to be kind. And I'm stubborn. I get that from you. I will never stop fighting! And I won't lose another parent! I love you, dad."
She blasts him with enough magic that he collapses.
Bow, invisible, types away on Entrapta's computer she set up in the Horde thing, but when he gets it to start to do its thing he gets excited and says "I've got it!!" and Scorpia hears it and blasts him and is standing over him about to get him.
Bow: "Prime may have made you do a lot of things, but he can't turn you into something you're not. So, right now, all I need you to do is trust me."
Her eyes get normal for a second and she yells, and Bow slams a button on Entrapta's computer. There's a bright light.
Where Sea Hawk is holding Mermista, her chip goes dead and falls off. We get a lovely montage of other characters from all over Etheria, like Huntara and the folks at Elberon, who'd been chipped having their eyes go back to normal!
Scorpia: "oh my gosh I am so sorry!!"
yeah she's definitely back to normal lol
up on Horde Prime's ship:

"My device worked! I knew it would!"
Bow: "Hey, everyone. I'm Bow."
(lol there's so much story in just this frame alone)
But yeah they show people from all over Etheria stopping to watch him speak, including his dads.
"Right now, we're the only thing standing in the way of him controlling it forever. You might be feeling hopeless. You might be thinking "We don't stand a chance." And maybe we don't. Prime's too strong. His army is too powerful. But that's not gonna stop us. We need to show Prime we're not afraid of him, because we have each other. And we have love. We can't give up. And if we go down, we go down together. We need you. All of you."
"It's time to fight. For She-Ra, for our homes, for each other!"
Broadcast over, back to Horde Prime. "Put an end to this mockery."
Catra injures the tentacle monster thing, but now that green is spreading into the room, and as Catra runs down the hall towards the Heart, she stops as Horde Prime shows up in hologram form
"I had such high hopes for you." like what, dude. keeping her around and chipped like a fucking puppet as an example? eugh. (something something about how her speeches to Adora while chipped were an obvious reference to people proselytizing high-control faiths)
the moment of distraction is enough for the tentacle monster to grab one of Catra's legs and she screams in pain D:
also there's still a bunch of earthquakes happening as these two limp towards the Heart
Poor Adora is just weakly going "No...no...wait"
Shadow Weaver: "Don't lose your focus. We're so close."
What's this WE shit.
But also damn one thing Shadow Weaver and Horde Prime (and Light Hope!) have in common is they both believe love and affection and "attachments" are weaknesses. Shadow Weaver just cannot seem to get it through her head that Adora's love for Catra (and vice versa) is helpful here. Not a detriment. Love isn't a distraction!!! It gives us a stable ground of security and safety from which to do hard things!!
Meanwhile poor Angella told Adora "take care of each other."
This is pulsating, and so is the Failsafe on Adora's chest
OH NO oh god Okay being near that much hardcore magic is making Shadow Weaver powerful--her hair does the floaty thing for the first time since, what, s2? And she starts reaching for it, but THEN--
Adora yells Catra's name and starts walking back towards her, and Shadow Weaver's hair falls down again and she says the most weirdly desperate-sounding "Adora, wait!"
Prime's hologram is still torturing Catra along with the actual tentacle monster
(someone has drawn rule 34 of that thing but I'm not looking for it. I am content to know it exists.)
AND THEN THE MONSTER GETS BLASTED BY SHADOW WEAVER AHAHA NICE
about time she was useful amiright
okay so is this Shadow Weaver actually realizing she's been wrong about The Power of Love, or is this just her begrudgingly accepting that these two are Sold as A Set, Do Not Separate, and unless Catra's there Adora won't be able to use the Failsafe because she'll be looking for Catra the whole time???
Like is this an emotional epiphany or just pragmatism?
oh god so she magically shoves Catra away (towards Adora), but Catra runs back to Shadow Weaver
And y'all I know I talked about this a LOT way back in earlier seasons but I cannot tell you how accurate this keeps being in regards to dealing with an abusive parent. Like if you'd asked me, even after I cut off contact, if I wanted my dad to die, I would've said No! Of course not! At that point I didn't know whether the no-contact thing was temporary or not. I just knew I needed time and space to not be constantly stressed and anxious, for a notification on my phone to not immediately fill me with so much adrenaline my hands shook.
Anyway Shadow Weaver puts up a magical shield to keep Catra back
Shadow Weaver's response is amazingly calm and quiet. "Please, Catra. You need to make sure Adora reaches the Heart. The magic must be set free."
Her fight with Tentacle Monster isn't going well.
Catra's voice is heartbreaking here. "Stop it! It's going to kill you!"
"But you, this is only the beginning for you."

One thing that makes me mad about milkvan (official) is that a lot of people think the 'superhero' comments from Mike about El are good when they're really not. Because they convey the idea that Mike sees El as this superhero and not a girl, which is El's primary need in the show. Even when she writes the note about becoming a superhero again, that's her desire because the only time she fit in was with the group/party when she had powers because 'they needed her'.
Then we see her relationship with her real family (Joyce, Hopper, Will, Jonathan, Max) whose love is unconditional. They're fine with her either way. I dont think Mike is fine with that (unconsciously) because yes, he says it in the speech, but we haven't seen that in the show? He keeps talking about her as Superman and himself as Lois Lane, but the issue there is that couple does not work if Lois only sees Superman and not Clark Kent. It's the essence of superheroes that they're both identities and the people who love them can see beyond the costume persona. In this context, Finn adding that line 'You're a superhero' makes sense if the goal is to drive the point that El doesn't need to be one to be loved. Which would imply that what Mike feels for her is not the right love for her. It's not even love imo as some people call it idolization and I think that's the perfect term.
Mike is used to her needing validation from him because she's a superhero and nobody else understands her but that's not the truth anymore. Which is why I love the montage of her and Max bonding in s3 during the final battle, that's when she learned the value of just being a person to another person. Anyway, I think the endgame has to be Eleven understanding this and losing her powers (that have been associated mostly to negative experiences) once and for all. Oh, yeah and Mike doesn't love her the way she needs to be loved.

what a question to ask me lol. ohhhkay, strap in.
(please note that when you ask me "favourite", that means you get favourite regardless of quality. and you get no tv shows or any such things, strictly movies)
(btw i haven't actually seen that many horror films. many of the iconic franchises especially - chucky, elm street, scream, friday the 13th, texas chainsaw massacre, what have you - just never piqued my interest. maybe some day)
(also these are in no particular order)

1. hellraiser franchise
my working theory is that all "hellraiser" movies are bad movies, but for different reasons. the og from 1987 is a bad movie because it was made on a budget of ten pounds and a packet of crisps. hellraiser 8 is bad because its plot is about a group of teens obsessed with a hellraiser video game getting murdered at a weird sex party. these two are not the same
that being said, i love these movies very much (except for hellraiser 10. i hate hellraiser 10 and will never ever watch it ever again, thank you. no reason) and love to look at pinhead and his many cenobite buddies doing weird kinky shit <3
2. halloween movies (only 1978 and the green trilogy from 2018 onwards)
i haven't seen any of the other ones because i was introduced to the series by my very good friend miri aka @asylos, who showed me those four and no others. and i was like okay :D and just never watched the rest because i don't consume media unless prompted
i'm a basic bitch, i see a man in a jumpsuit and get gender envy, so og twink michael delights me. that being said, old man michael from the green trilogy? CHEF'S KISS. love that fucker. he's the best
3. anything del toro
a lot of his films don't really stay within the constraints of a single genre, but they definitely contain horror elements. my favourite is "the shape of water", which has its moments but is overall not that scary. the pale man from "pan's labyrinth" made quite the impression on me when i first saw the movie because while i had seen the iconic shot of him raising his hands to reveal the Palm Eyes before, i was unaware of the fact that that fucker gets up and shambles around and i was Not Okay with that
crimson peak is very pretty and i love it. for obvious reasons, i think
4. willy's wonderland
nic cage night janitor animatronic murder fight bonanza my beloved. like honestly, i watched the fnaf movie yesterday and it had zero good cleaning montages, wasn't as funny and had fewer bangers, music-wise, than willy's does. like what's the fuckin point
5. fright night 2011
this film has david tennant in it and that's why i watched it. apart from him being an absolutely show-stealing delight, the rest of the film is also a fun romp. there's vampires and stuff
6. bad samaritan
this film ALSO has david tennant in it. he's doing an american accent (a way better one than in "gracepoint", a show that you should Not watch. just watch "broadchurch" instead please, i promise you're not missing anything) and is playing a rich asshole obsessed with horses who abducts and kills women. also he throws a phone out of a car window at two separate occasions and it cracks me up
the main character is played by some actor whose name i can never remember. he's irish or something and i think he might have been in one of those pieces of media i haven't consumed. umbrella academy? was he klaus in umbrella academy? who's klaus?? is klaus FROM umbrella academy? who knows
anyway, the film is a thriller and i quite like watching it. it's tense with zero unnecessary padding, it knows what it's here for and delivers
7. the thing 1982 + 2011
another one i watched with miri. miri likes to show me horror films (and tv shows) a lot <3 we watched both the og and the new one and i quite liked them! the dog in the 82 one is really really good at his job. i highkey struggle with big groups of characters bc i can't remember names and faces for shit, so i was reeeally bad at spotting the Thing. also i liked the teeth thing from the 2011 one that was smart
8. bunny lake is missing
does this count as a horror movie? idk, but i'm putting it here
9. psycho
it's pretty good. i liked it. i think norman would have been a tumblr sexyman if such a thing had existed in the 1960s
10. the one hour long space horror segment trapped in the middle of otherwise meandering artfilm "2001: a space odyssey"

11. alien
classic. i haven't seen any of the others apart from "aliens" because the internet said they were bad
12. the abyss
veers closer to sci-fi than horror, but i'm counting it bc it sure is tense. this is a film by james cameron about *checks smudged handwriting* some underwater diving alien nonsense or something. idk, it's been a while since i've watched it. another movie with a big group of characters i can't tell apart for shit, which is why i'm always rooting for some of them to start dying already
i watched this one because i unfortunately am doing a handshake meme with jimmy cameron labelled "hello i am obsessed with the ocean" and unlike me, he has the money to make really long epic films about it
13. the haunting 1963
this is a movie adaptation of "the haunting of hill house" by shirley jackson. it's very good! (if you're familiar with flanagan's netflix show, there are some parts of this movie that will be... quite familiar)
i watched this one with miri, followed immediately by the 1999 remake (?), which i found very strange and occasionally hilarious because of cgi that hasn't stood the test of time. also, i'd like it to be put on record that i fuckin CALLED the thing about the fireplace (somehow lol)
14. rocky horror picture show
my parents showed me this movie when i was maybe a bit too young to see it, at a point in my life where i hadn't quite figured out yet that i was various shades of queer. it sure made an Impression
many years later, i finally got around to watching the sequel, "shock treatment" (thanks to miri, of course) which is very different but also a good time, and has some bangers of its own!

the shining (i care about shelley duvall and nothing else. so glad she got to punt jack nicholson's character down a flight of stairs with a baseball bat)
black christmas (keir dullea what IS your haircut shgsjfghs)
cabin in the woods (i knew nothing going in and miri was very pleased by this fact)
house on haunted hill 1959 (skeleton lol)
young frankenstein (my parents showed me the german dub version when i was, again, a bit too young for it. iconic movie tbh)

Thoughts on the new wwdits:
Nadja trying to be a mother is the funniest thing in the world. She's so violent. I love her
Guillermo embezzling from the club being why he wanted to be the accountant makes so much sense. Get that paper babe. The fact he's doing it for his family too. I love him
The stinger at the end showing Nadja was embezzling the rest, I love her so much
Lazlo being a good dad at the start!

Nadja kinda carried this one tbh and it was pretty fillery but im absolutely not complaining, dumb funny filler with my dumb idiots being themselves just makes me so happy
Djin was great too, I was the first episode that I noticed he grants his wishes by pressing his pen. I'm probably way late to the party on that fact but it's a cool idea. Honestly he's a really well executed character in general. I like that he's a Djin not a genie, I like that he has way more wishes, I like the vauge lawyer vibe to him. It's a really good portrayal and I've never seen it done like that. Wish granting geine is pretty played out as an idea because its such a useful frame work, I like that they're doing cool stuff with it.
I loved the pay off with nador and lazlo at the end showing that they absolutely have a shit ton of sex (which we knew) Don't get me wrong I love my Ladja and Nandormo but Landor is fucking hilarious. That's kinda the benefit of a show with canon poly characters I guess. You can ship however you like.
Was honestly suprised one of the hypnosises wasn't lazlo and Shaun. Though maybe it because he turned lazlo down and Lazlo respect's that

I honestly don't know who impractical Jokers are, I literally only have heard of them because a guy on a Reddit thread said they don't blur the faces of members of the public which as a brit sounds insane. But anyway I thought lazlo snapping his neck was funny.

IBO:Urdr Hunt part 17 has been fansubbed over on Youtube by @trafalgarlog (who you’ll note is now on Tumblr).
Oh, I misspoke on my post about the Soup Party side-story -- I believe we’re due one more side-story from the game, featuring McGillis and Almiria. Though given events in this episode, there is an outside chance that’ll actually be in the Urdr Hunt.
Speaking of those events, it’s only a flipping beach episode. Sort of. IN SPACE! Sadly we are not treated to Montag [swimsuit edition] but he does stick his oar in properly this time, as Katya’s past definitively catches up to her, the Afam gang do some pool-side market research, and serious questions are raised about how exactly the Seven Star family lineages work.

As we are wont to do, we open on the bridge of the Erda II where the crew are remarking on the lack of instruction regarding the next stage of the Hunt. The ring has been dormant for a month and a half, leaving everyone at a loss for how to proceed. While Korunaru believes she would have been told if everything had been called off, they are talking about someone who can casually hand out a hundred million meria as a deposit. Dexter and Sinister point out this is chump-change next to the hundred billion prize. Perhaps it has just been written off?
On the plus side, the free time enables what is presumably a great opportunity to spend some of Wistario’s deposit: visiting a near-Earth resort colony to look into what it has to offer with a view to replicating that on Radonitsa in the future.
Or at least this is what Katya and Korunaru claim they’re doing as they have a whale of a time testing out the colony’s water-park. Range chides them on treating this as playtime when there is serious work to be done -- while seated on an inflatable, sipping a cold drink through a straw, and wearing his swimming trunks.
And yes: Range is absolutely ripped and yes, his swimming trunks match his poncho. What a guy.
Wistario is fine with everyone having a good time: they’re here to study the facilities after all. And Range is in fact fully committed to doing so, having checked out the A-plus service from the staff and established there’s a cinema and casino in easy reach, not to mention the large-scale docking port to accommodate passenger liners.
I do wonder - only partly because I love the manga - if this is meant to be one of the Avalanche colonies from IBO:Gekko. Avalanche 5 at least is indicated to be a resort and the position close to the Moon would make it an easy destination from Earth. That would also place this in Arianrhod Fleet territory, which might have a bearing on later events.
Anyway, no way is Venus able to copy a place like this given its current circumstances. Katya is amused by how much Range is throwing himself into this -- he’s even been getting details on the permit system that Gjallarhorn uses to control travel to Venus (since it’s used as a penal colony), in the hopes of finding a way to bargain for greater access. It’s kind of endearing, honestly. Range is, as ever, jumping both feet first into the challenge before him.
But enough fun: Demner has spotted some suspicious characters watching the party. It appears intrigue is afoot!
Seeing as they need to know what’s up -- it could be another Urdr Hunt rivalry in the offing -- Wistario, Korunaru and a reluctant Katya draw the spies into the open at the back of the pool buildings.
To everyone’s surprise -- through perhaps not the audience and definitely not the girl herself -- the two men are here for Katya. But with Range causing a distraction, Demner is able to sneak up behind the men and overpower them (have I mentioned that the old chap is a scarily dab hand at beating people up? It bears repeating).
Unfortunately, it turns out these two were carrying genuine Gjallarhorn IDs -- and a fully-uniformed officer arrives to raise the alarm.
Everybody Scooby-Doos it out of the water park, running into the requisite nearby alleyway. But just as Range is thinking they might be in the clear, an impressively large blonde-haired gentleman judo-throws him clean across the alley. This is Captain Londo Bron and he is here for Lady Katya.
That’s right -- Lady Katya, who a tearful Londo remarks is the spitting image of Lady Carta when she was young.
Katya, of course, point-blank refuses to leave with him. Unfortunately, with Londo’s men blocking the way back, things are looking sadly inevitable. Demner offers to handle Londo while the others escape, but Wistario won’t leave him behind.
Which is when a familiar voice speaks from a nearby hatch: down here!
The gang scramble through the open door, finding themselves in an emergency escape tunnel designed for evacuations in the event the colony is damaged. Shutters close after them, allowing them to evade Londo and the other soldiers. But who is it that came to their aid in such dire straits?
I mean, no prizes for this one. ‘Humble businessman’ Montag steps from the shadows with his best insufferable smirk, congratulating himself on the success of his spur-of-the-moment decision to help.
Range is surprised anybody would go against Gjallarhorn like this, only for McGillis to smoothly move the subject to the fact that Londo’s next move will probably be to blockade the ports. So maybe they’d all better be running along, hmm?
Katya and McGillis exchange a last look as the group hurries away from him, and he notes that she really does look like Carta . . .
(I remain delighted by the fact that Mackie’s masked stranger act continues flies purely by virtue of him never giving anyone time or space to call him out on it.)
Remarkably, the Erda II is able to safely undock and leave. Wistario speculates that Londo’s unit might fall under a separate jurisdiction and therefore not have been able to halt a departing ship. However, they’re not in the clear yet, as a Gjallarhorn Halfbeak cruiser sends out a stop signal and is promptly dwarfed by the gigantic Skipjack-class battleship emerging from behind the colony. (Err . . . small note here, I’m not actually sure what the correct equivalent for Gjallarhorn’s ships would be in modern naval terminology. I tend to default to ‘cruiser’ to describe the Halfbeaks and the Skipjacks as ‘command ships’ though I think ‘battleship’ would be correct? These things are all part-aircraft carrier anyway, so there might not be a direct analog.)
I’m pretty certain the Halfbeak is in ‘default’ colours rather than those used by the Outer Earth Orbit Regulatory Joint Fleet (oh lord, I can type that from memory now) under Carta Issue’s command, but the Skipjack has the Issue Family crest proudly displayed on the side, so there’s no question of who it is has come after Katya (she herself calls them out by name). Incidentally, this is I think the first time an animated IBO thing has really conveyed just how bloody massive the Skipjack is. It’s twice as long as a Halfbeak and about thrice as tall, so it’s little wonder Wistario and the others are struck dumb at the sight of it.
With more mobile suits than Dexter can count approaching, Katya takes imminent capture as well as you might expect and flees to the mobile suit bay with a half-formed idea of taking Hajiroboshi.
Wistario intercepts her as she’s flailing in the zero gravity and she tells him she’d rather die than be captured. He says that must mean they’re some fairly horrible people. So she’d better leave this to him. And Range, who he orders into battle: they’re going to break through Gjallarhorn’s line so the ship can escape.
Katya looks up to find Demner and Korunaru there as well, readying themselves for a fight. In the middle of everything, it’s good to have friends.
We get the stock-footage of Hajiroboshi and Asmoday launching, which is cut in a bit inelegantly since we go from Wistario and Ranger entering the ‘suit bay to them entering it again in their flight gear. Could have been finessed, I feel. But anyway, it’s fight time!
The two Gundams manage to make a dent in the force of Grazes sent after them (which are tan-coloured, something previously only seen with the Dáinsleif archer variants in Season 2; not sure if that’s significant) and thus create the required opening for the Erda II. Regrettably, that’s when Captain Londo joins the fight.
His Graze Ritter (commander’s variant) instantly obliterates Wistario’s rifle with a Giant Fuck-Off Axe. He is, it turns out, a crack pilot and not a bad tactician either, as he is able to hold the pair’s attention long enough for his troops to encircle them.
Aboard the Erda II, Demner and Katya can only watch helplessly, since turning back to assist would undo everything they’re trying to achieve. Luckily, a certain red mobile suit zips past in the opposite direction, announcing that it’s there to help . . .
Londo is suitably thrown by seeing the Grimgerde bearing down on him, swords drawn, and McGillis joins the fray, confidently taking charge and ordering Wistario and Range to regroup then divide Londo’s forces. With the masked man’s help, they’re able to disable everyone except the captain himself. McGillis tells the others to go on without him -- he’ll see them soon -- and engages the Ritter directly.
It’s a fierce duel but McGillis is quickly able to get the upper hand, disarming his opponent, headbutting him, and then dropping a quick bit of psychological warfare on him before peacing out: is Londo aware of Okina Uroka’s ambitions?
(Incidentally, I think this is the first time we’ve seen the Grimgerde’s visor open to expose the monocular eye inside - this feature wasn’t ever shown in IBO proper but McGillis does it here for . . . some reason. Possibly just to show-off.)
As he leaves the battlefield, Mackie reflects that Londo’s loyalty will be of use to him. He’s also intrigued to see a couple of extra Gundams knocking around (because he is a nerrrrd).
Aboard the Skipjack, the sensor operator reports the loss of the Erda II’s signal to an elderly gent with familiar eyebrows: Lord Uroka. He is not pleased with Londo’s blundering, who does not make excuses for failing to ‘protect’ Katya. But Katya herself refused to come with him . . .
Uroka is unphased. She’s too young to appreciate her position. Londo remarks that she nonetheless seems smart, to which Uroka responds by saying that while Carta was special, Katya might come close, if she learns from the right people. This will be his final duty as Issue Family patriarch.
To this end, he sends Londo out with a Halfbeak and a platoon of mobile suits. But he doesn’t seem all that impressed with the good captain, remarking in his absence that he’s more loyal dog than loyal subject.
Back on the Erda II, the subject of conversation is most assuredly: what the fuck? While nobody blames Katya for the actions of others, she has run out of room to squirm around the question of what she’s running away from. The Issue Family is currently without a heir, owing to a slight Mikazuki-induced curtailment of the bloodline. Carta Issue was going to replace the head of the family due to his being on his sickbed -- but if that sick patriarch happened to have another, illegitimate child . . . well.
Yes, Katya confirms dourly: she is the final Issue heir.
Which if nothing else raises a massive question-mark over who exactly Lord Uroka is. Up to now, all the heads of the Gjallarhorn noble houses have borne the name of their Family. Does this mean Uroka is only an Issue by marriage? But if so, how does that square with keeping the bloodline going? If Katya has a claim, it’s surely got to be via the Issue Family line. Or are the rules flexible in that regard? We’ve had no hint previously that Carta’s dad was anything less than the outright head of her house prior to his illness. His illness was severe enough to have required her to be placed under Iznario Fareed’s guardianship, sure, but you’d think a more complicated family situation would have come up before now. Or is that situation *why* Fareed could get his hooks into the matter?
Actually, while I assume this is a blind-alley for speculation to follow, we’ve no confirmation as yet that this *is* Carta’s father. Uroka looks old and sickly but he’s up and about. Could it be that this is in fact another relative who has stepped into the void left by both father and daughter?
Well, hopefully we’ll find out next time. I’m not wholly convinced how beneficial it will be to Urdr Hunt as a story to have McGillis’ political maneuvering thrown into the mix. But I am certainly intrigued by what’s going to happen here. While the obvious conclusion is that Uroka intends to use Katya to perpetuate the Issue Family, Mackie’s parting line to Londo suggests something more is going on. And we do know for certain that whatever Uroka is planning, the Issues are a spent force by the time of Season 2. We have a foregone conclusion without a clear picture on what the middle part is yet.
As for Londo Bron himself . . . well, he’s obviously a survivor of Carta’s, um, what is the masculine equivalent of an Amazon Brigade? Whatever, he’s a blonde hunk fanatically loyal to House Issue and honestly, I like where this is going. Carta’s Mackie-clone squad beautifully walks the line between joke and heartbreaking detail, so exploring what became of a remainder of them after the fact is an intriguing line to follow. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he ends up pitted against his boss before this is done.
Katya’s opinions on all this have been clear from the start: she does not want anything to do with the Issues, with her affections being squarely for her mother. This ramps that up, with her being willing to effectively leap into space rather than be dragged into her father’s schemes. Obviously we get the note of everyone rallying round to protect her, which is fine if rote. I really hope wherever this goes, she’s able to settle it on her own terms and isn’t reduced to a damsel in distress . . .

Puss in Boots the last Wish is a great way to start 2023!
Finally got to see the new Puss in Boots movie after hearing everyone talking about how much they loved the heck out of it and after being more than sold in this new Spider-Verse/ Arcane/ Bad Guys style of animation that mixes 2D and 3D in such an imaginative way.
There was a part of me that was admittedly a little bit skeptical and went into this going "Okay, then, movie, impress me... If you dare!"
And... Yeah, everyone was right. This movie is freaking awesome!
While I don't think everyone is going to be blown away by the story, there is one element that I'm pretty sure we all can agree was handled perfectly...
This movie feels like a spectacle!
The way characters move, the way they talk, the way they interact, the way they are simply introduced into a scene, everything feels like it's trying to give the experience of a show to the audience.
Like for instance, the very first action scene. At first you think it's going to be this very simple and fun tiny thing, but then it keeps escalating and becoming more and more epic as it goes on. It goes bigger, the action gets faster, the music gets louder, and you just keep getting into the mood as if you were there yourself and rooting for the hero.
It does such a great job sucking you into the hype.
That's really the best word for it. The hype just feels real. When the move wants you to feel like you're in a party, you feel like you're in a party, and when it wants you to feel like you're in danger you feel like you're in danger.
The emotions transmit so well through the imagery and the animation. You just feel like you're Puss in Boots fighting all these enemies, running for your life, traveling through these dangerous locations and connecting with these people.
It reminds me a lot of the Kung Fu Panda movies whenever they do a montage scene

Imagine a whole movie done like this, taking full advantage of the animated stylized visual storytelling!
Another thing I really like is the way they incorporate personality into the actions of each character.
For instance, there is a scene where one of the villains needs to place a glass ball into his bag, but instead of just putting it in he launches it as if it was a bowling ball. There is another where one is talking with her family while jumping on top of a bunch of bears, and the way she jumps from one to another just looks so much fun.
Everyone in this movie feels like they are always having fun, always enjoying every second of being who they are. And the one who looks like he's having the most fun is the main bad guy who, I'm just gonna say, It's probably Dreamworks' best villain since Shen.
(In case you haven't noticed it, I'm not actually going to spoil any imagery of this movie because everything here looks way too good and it deserves to be experienced blind)
This villain is so freaking badass! His voice is badass! His design is badass! His motivation is badass! And the way he interacts with Puss!
I'm so glad they remembered that their best villains were Shen and Ramses and the reason they are so great is because they actually have a connection with the heroes.
This dude's interactions with Puss are cool, scary, intense, and at the same time still feel justified, you totally get where he's coming from, which honestly makes him even more of a threat because you know he's right.
This is such a fun, hype, cool, and awesome spectacle of a movie!
Even if the writing and the story aren't that outstanding (personally I feel they could have used some better jokes, but oh well), the style more than makes up for it.
I had a great time and highly recommend it! I want to see more of this from Dreamworks! I would be immensely happy if they just reformed themselves as the 2D/3D mixed company.
You know they want to anyway. They always loved putting 2D stuff in their 3D movies, just let them make this their new home.
Spider-Verse was awesome. Arcane was awesome. Bad Guys was awesome. And now Puss in Boots is awesome too! Give us more!

Just rewatched a few scenes from the first few episodes of season 3 and I feel like it was off? Don't get me wrong, it was fun, whimsical and light-hearted but it didn't have the charm, authenticity and nostalgia that season 1 and 2 had.
The first two seasons pulled off light-hearted fun moments too without deflecting from the fact that all the characters involved have something significant going on. I feel like some lines or just character portrayals in early season 3 were plain OOC (Hopper being needlessly aggressive and harsh), and they overall struggled to strike a balance and focused too much on making it "funny, 80s, bright colours!" rather than sticking with keeping it authentic. However, I still enjoyed watching early season 3 a lot, the elmax mall scene + them bonding was one of the best things to happen on the show. I do have a lot to say on this topic but I dont like leaving long asks so I'll leave it here 😭
I absolutely agree. However many years later, I’ve come to love Season 3 for what it is, but at the time I was really disappointed in it. The tonal shift was just crazy, and the way that it played around with characterisation to achieve this shift was very strange.
Hopper is the biggest example of this, in my opinion. My mum and I were talking about this the other day, we were watching S3, and I just burst out at one point, “He’s so unlikeable, this season!” She’s the biggest Hopper fan, but she completely agreed, and pointed out, “He just went back to normal in Season 4. It was so weird.”
The first two seasons did a remarkable job of balancing light hearted fun with serious moments, as well as providing distinction, so as not to sacrifice the impact of something meaningful for the sake of a laugh. They were also just genuinely funnier, in my opinion, because they felt more effortless, more subtle.
I’m digressing here, but I’m convinced that the way the Mileven breakup in S3 was played for laughs has caused a massive misunderstanding of Mike’s character. Everyone dismisses his fear of losing El because it was presented in the context of a joke, but really, Hopper DID manipulate Mike into lying to El, by using his worst fear against him (Mike, to Lucas: “He’ll keep from seeing El, PERMANENTLY.”), and then Mike spends the rest of the season desperately trying to keep El safe, because he’s so scared of losing her (Mike: “Can we please come up with a new place because I love her and I can’t lose her again!”)
Anyway, yes! Early S3 had its good moments. El and Max were one of the best parts of S3, and I adored their mall montage. El and Mike in the first episode were very cute. I also loved the sparse moments of the Party all together - I wish we got to see more of that!

Raquel Watch Party Watch: Kansas City Bomber (1972)

So... Picking movies for Friday watch parties is always a challenge. We talk over the movies, so it can't be anything too complicated. It has to be fun because we're not watching a movie on a Friday to be miserable - and that's not the vibe for riffing, anyway.
While Raquel Welch is an international icon, and I wanted to use the Watch Party to celebrate her the week of her passing, and thus I was also looking to find a movie in which she played the lead. Plus, I like Roller Derby. So, I picked Kansas City Bomber (1972), not really knowing much about it. But that is not to say that I saw the trailers and was not dazzled that the romantic co-star was Kevin McCarthy. I mean...
Look, I'm not a an expert on 1970's filmmaking, but there are some various strains of what happened during the decade, and I don't think it's entirely a mistake that by the early 1980's we pivoted and movies have built on what some directors were doing during the 70's while what others were doing shows up in indie film but isn't what makes mainstream film or blockbusters. You can love Altman, but meandering movies with sprawling casts and confusing audio are not still super in vogue.
Kansas City Bomber (1972) could have been a fun movie about the wacky world of pro-Roller Derby, a third-tier sport that mixed actual competition with pro-wrestling hucksterism, ginned up rivalries and general ludicrousness. But this is 1972, and someone decided this movie needed to be a working class drama about a woman who rolls away from the life built on certain expectations that didn't work out. She's more or less abandoned her two kids from a failed marriage to live with her mother and she's making a living as a regional Roller Derby pro, a career that literally can't pay much. Which really just opens the door to all sorts of questions like: but why? and... what for? and... does this really pay any better than literally any other job?
It's a movie that - like a particular flavor of 1970's movie - believes we're to just catch snatches of conversations and bits of story with a sort of fly-on-the-wall observation of the characters more than ever being right alongside them. And, because our hero, KC (Welch) never says what's going on with her, it's a lot of inference. Which, as it turns out, is pretty tricky when it comes to movies and characters. We can kind of infer, gather and guess as to how KC is doing, what she wants, etc... but you're never really on sure footing. I'll argue, this can be done well. This ain't it.
The end result is that you get the feeling Raquel Welch, who is a good actor, is doing her best to turn in a performance as a lead - a messy, imperfect protagonist - and you're watching someone from thirty feet away through a screen door. The journey her character is on is hazy - it feels more episodic than a clear through-line as we try on some montage filmmaking.
Anyway, I like Kevin McCarthy. He's been a big part of making me enjoy many-a-movie. He is a supremely weird choice for the romantic interest for KC. He's got 26 years on her, and isn't exactly Tyrone Power and seems like a walking red flag (in this film).
The movie wants to show the They Shoot Horses, Don't They? lifestyle of the blue-collar world of Roller Derby. To that end we get a few predictable and not well fleshed out b-plots, like Jackie - the former hot skater who has lost her crown to Welch and is now drinking heavily. We have the Lenny-like Hank who has "doomed" written all over him because he is nice and not corrupt and exists to be a cautionary lesson to KC. I assumed Jackie would be the necessary "has a bad night and KC watches and then we never see the character again" character, but it was Hank.
BECAUSE ROLLER DERBY WILL DESTROY YOU.
Anyway, I appreciate what everyone thought they were doing. It's a shame it isn't a great movie because it has pretentions of being one. But this was kind of that era of film school grads deciding they were going to make "realistic" films, and with budgets what they were, we got Hal Ashby movies and even Scorsese films. And some of that works. And you have a whole lot don't work for audiences in 2023, I suppose. Or me, I guess.
If you're looking for a movie with well-drawn characters about Roller Derby, just watch Whip It! You'll be happier.
Does Welch look amazing in a roller derby uniform? Sir, that is not a serious question. Do I buy that she'd throw an elbow or knock someone over? I assume she did that, anyway, without direction.
Anyway, I wish I'd picked 100 Rifles, but here we are. I'll watch that one later.
