Chapter One: Otsukare
Yoongi’s POV
I glance down at my phone, a new text from Hoba. ‘5 mins away :p’. I don’t bother responding but instead, give Jungkook a slight shove. His shoulder is digging into mine, dozing off on the couch. Drool comes from his lips to the cushion, luckily not my shirt sleeve. He barely lifts his head as I stand up, heading to the table where our things are packed. I roll my eyes looking over him slumped on the couch. I get it, I’m tired too, but he can rest in the car.
“Hoseok will be here soon, you better not forget anything,” I lecture, and he nods his head. He isn’t listening and I know it. I shake my head, double-checking my bag for my charger.  I don’t want to forget it, even if I won’t be on my phone that often. Hobi’s charger has been lost and there wasn’t time to get a new one so he’ll want to borrow one of ours on the trip. I glance at my phone, at full charge and it will probably stay that way.
“No no, I won’t,” he mumbles, groggy still. It is gonna be a long drive, so we had woken early, he’ll likely claim the back seat to crash in. I pout, knowing I won’t be able to rest my eyes. It’s better to drive with an extra pair of eyes on the road. I’m glad that Hoseok volunteered to drive in the first place. Jungkook had agreed to drive on the way home so maybe I can nap in the backseat then.
“Your charger?” I ask, grabbing the bag of food and placing it on the counter. Chips, bread, some soda, mostly sweets but Hobi is bringing the cooler with our sandwich makings.
“Yeah it’s in there,” he mostly whispers. I shrug, won’t be my problem if he hasn’t packed it. He just won’t have a phone, no biggie since we are meant to be on holiday. Slinging the bag over my shoulder I take up my suitcase, heading to the door.
“Come on, why don’t you help me bring some stuff outside so we can just stick it in the trunk and go.” He gives a short hum as I head out. Whatever, I’ll just make him unpack everything when we get to the cabin. The door slams behind me as I walk down to the elevator. It takes me slowly to the lobby, but I head out the back where I know Hobi would be parking. The air is chill against my cheeks as I push myself out the door. The summer is just at its tail end, making the mornings and evenings quite chilly. Looking around for his car I hug my bag tighter. Hopefully, the weather will warm up for our trip.
His car pulls in, stopping in the spot ahead of me. As he exits the vehicle, the trunk opens up. Stuffed inside is the cooler and his suitcase.
“Hi hi hiii,” He cheers, a huge grin spread across his face. He jogs over to me, taking the bag of food from my hands. “It’s a good day aye?” He hums, walking me back over to the car.
“Yeah,” I grin, pulling up the suitcase into the trunk beside his, giving it a push to leave room for Jungkook’s. “Hoping for nicer weather.” I nod up to the cloudy sky, a blinding white, but the sun is still hiding.
“When we get there it’ll get warmer,” He assures, dropping the bag in, and pulling me in for a hug. “Where’s Jungkook?” He says, releasing me and shutting the trunk.
“He probably fell back asleep upstairs,” I sigh as Hoseok leads the way back inside shrugging.
With a cheeky smirk, he hops inside the elevator, “Can’t lie I almost fell asleep on the road.” And with my silence, he gives a chuckle.
My elbow finds his side, “Hey drink some coffee next time.” I sigh, “Oh, and don’t text and drive either.” I scold, crossing my arms. He makes a pop with his mouth ignoring what I said. “I’m being serious you could get killed,” I mutter as we walk into the hall back towards the room.
“You’re right, I won't anymore.” He smiles, opening the door for me. I take a step in, Jungkook looming right over me. I bump into his bag just as he is coming out the door.
“Ohp sorry Yoongi hyungie.” He laughs, eyes slightly swollen, but awake nevertheless, hair draped over his cheeks.
“You left nothing behind right?”
“Nope,” He shakes his head, “stop worrying so we can have fun,” He huffs. He’s lucky I know he’s teasing.
“So we are ready to get on the road?” Hobi asks, leading the way back to the elevator. “Good Morning Jungkookie.” they squish right into a hug. “Are you excited?” Jungkook hums an answer, stepping in after him.
“Where is it exactly that we are going anyway?” He questions, and I’m wondering the same thing.
“Gangwon Province, a little cabin that I rented for us in the woods,” He informs us. “I don't know, I just thought it would be nice for us three to get away for a little.” I nod, it is a good opportunity for us, this weekend we have no upcoming filmings or recordings to do. Namjoon is helping Jimin on his own solo album and Taehyung is going to be with his family. Not sure what Jin hyung’s reason for not attending is.
“Yes yes, I’m glad that collab got pushed back till next week because I really wanted to join you guys,” Jungkook says, taking the first step out of the elevator as it reaches the lobby.
I bud in, “I think it will make us think back to when we did In the Soop, don’t ya think?”
“Agreed,” Hobi starts, “I brought some canvas…”
“Hey hey!” Jin calls out, running over from the stairs. He’s still in his RJ pajamas, hair strewn and eyes half-closed. I grin watching him hobble over to us.
“Jinnie hyung?” Jungkook smiles, turning back to greet him. He must have come to say goodbye and send us off.  Jin squeezes Jungkook tight, muttering goodbyes.
“You drive safe now.” He tells Hoseok after releasing him from an embrace. “I hope you all have fun together.” I smile, hugging him tightly as well. “Go fishing for me,” He beams at me, grabbing my ears.
“There aren't any fishing spots.” Hobi frowns.
“Sorry to disappoint,” I say, patting his back.
“That's the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” He scoffs. “Who goes camping and doesn’t fish?” His lip curls up. “Well I only came down here this early to tell you to catch me a fish but I guess I did it for nothing.”
“Pshhh,” Jungkook rolls his eyes, “Yeah right, you love us and came down to give us all kisses goodbye.”
“Okay now seriously,” he points at each of us, “be safe, I’m tired and going back to sleep, text us when you get there.”
“Yes, yes, hyung. Don’t worry, got a full tank this morning,” Hobi smiles, giving Jin’s hand a squeeze before he walks away, sending a wave as he heads to the elevator.
“Too bad he has a meeting on Saturday,” Hobi pouts, as we head out the back door once more. Jungkook squints his eyes as the cool breeze hits him. All of us rushed to get in the car and turn the heat on. I’m not so sure Hoseok is right about it warming up later.
“Don’t worry,” he says, buckling his seatbelt, me next to him in the passenger like I had figured would happen. “There is full heating and air conditioning at the cabin, so if it stays cold we can just cuddle up indoors.” He turns, facing Jungkook, backing up, and exits the lot.
“That sounds really nice,” Jungkook mutters, leaning his head now covered in his hoodie against the window. I nod with a smile, turning up Hobi’s heat in the car.
“No matter what I think this will be a healing weekend for us,” I assure, after all, we have been busy filming concepts and the new music video all week. We hadn’t gotten much time to relax but the three of us would at least be able to get some R&R together. Hobi has been especially stressed, he had a pain in his ankle and was trying to not get injured while we learned the new dance. Of course, he was still overexerting himself, but now I’m glad he’ll be able to rest.
He got on the highway, it will be about an hour drive which isn’t that bad. Maybe another thirty minutes after, to get to our campsite. If it ends up being a bust I suppose we can just go home.
Hobi had turned on the radio, humming along to what had come on. He’s been looking forward to this since he rented the cabin months ago. If I can help it this will be the best weekend ever.
It’s been a quiet drive, Jungkook slept the entire ride, but he probably needs the rest. Hobi plays Otsukare as we get off the main road. Playing it from youtube it sounds awful, but I can’t stop myself from laughing.
“Don’t, don’t.” I plead, shaking my head.
“It’s sope!” He calls, looking to me for a response. I laugh, tossing my eyes to the window. It’s too early for this. I glance at the clock, 9:15 and we haven't eaten breakfast. “We’re sope!” He continues singing.
“Okayyy, let’s go!” I mumble, crossing my arms as Hoseok breaks out into laughter. He continues singing as I hum along, embarrassed. It has been years since I heard this last. It would be fun to perform again with him. Maybe I’ll ask management.
Hoseok makes another turn, the trees taking over both sides of the road. There aren’t any other cars that turned along with us. It isn't a holiday weekend so we’ll likely be the only ones on vacation at this time. Not to mention the weather, it is the same as when we had left earlier. A white cloudy blanket over the whole sky, blocking out the sun but leaving the daylight to light the road. If you look deep into the trees though, there it would be dark. Hopefully, the cabin will be in a clearing so it will be lit up, then there would also be fewer bugs. I smirk, thinking about how Hobi will likely panic once we arrive, upon the amount of bugs. Hopefully, he brought bug spray. I made sure to have mosquito nets so there is that.
“Pay attention,” He starts again! Hopping up in his chair, still keeping his eyes on the road. I don’t respond so he continues, “Okay, let's smile. It's human relations. There are mountains too” He raises eyebrows to me, turning a dial for the volume.
“There are valleys too,” I sing quietly, licking my lips and reaching for my water.
“Well, that's just what life is” He grabs my hand, stopping me from reaching for the bottle. “But the earth rotates” He holds my hand back up to my face, making me roll my eyes.
“Your dream will surely come true.”
“You too,” Getting louder.
“Me too,” And louder, producing smiles.
“Let's do our best, thank you!” We sing together, Hobi turning off onto a dirt road, making the whole car shutter.
“Ayooo, why are you sooo loud,” Jungkook moans, pressing his hands into his eyes. “It’s so early…”
“Mhmh, not really anymore.” I turn back, patting his leg. “I’m sure we are almost there anyway. Right Hoba?” I flip back up to the front, where he is turning down the volume. Eyes confused, staring off, and slowing the car down to a crawl.
“Right,” He whispers, looking into his mirrors.
“What's wrong?” Jungkook sits up, looking outside the windows. It’s getting dark under the trees, just the light coming from in between the road shining down on us. It’s deep emerald green, glowing at the treetops from the light attempting to penetrate. At the base of the tall trees though it is hard to see through, getting darker and darker the further you try to look. There aren't any paths on either side and no turn-offs. Is Hoseok lost? I look over to him, but he just stops the car completely.
“Uh, I thought the turn was around here.” He pouts, pulling up his phone which has the GPS turned on. He sighs, “yeah see.” Flicking the phone in between Jungkook and I. There it is, the turn right in front of us. But there is no road and no sign that there ever has been.
“The internet connection must be bad out here.” Jungkook bites his inner cheek, sliding down in his seat. “What’s the road called? Or like the company for renting?”
Hoseok sets his phone in the cup holder, slowly releasing the brake and letting the car continue slowly forward. “It's just like a number marker and then we drive down further to reach a small clearing and hillside where the cabin will be.”
“What number?” I ask, sitting up in my chair.
“Mhm, 189.” He mutters, mouth screwing up. We sit in silence for a while as he drives down the road. Looking at the clock it is 9:25.
“It’s been ten minutes,” I announce, and Hobi only shakes his head. He’s getting annoyed. “Maybe we missed it?”
“We are going five miles an hour,” He huffs, squeezing the steering wheel. “Oh well, we could turn back around.” He shrugs, letting out a sigh, but I can tell he is still bothered. Must be stress weighing him down.
“Oh look!” Jungkook’s finger comes in between us, pointing forward to the right. Both our heads turn to look, but I can’t see a damn thing.
“What where?”
He scoots closer to the center seat. “There there, low to the ground!” He hops up and down, and there it is. A few inches from the ground a small yellow reflective sign marked ‘189’.
“Oh thank goodness.” Hoseok speeds up, reaching the turn-off in no time.
“Why is there just some random cabin marked ‘189’,” Jungkook complains, sorting through his things. “Where is 1-188” He huffs, making Hobi smile.
“Yeah it is kind of weird,” He responds, taking the turn. It’s a tight road, trees looming overhead and thus enclosing us in the dark. So much so that the car's headlights turn on automatically, the day becoming the evening. Here the road is even bumpier, grass grown in on the path. We all go silent, eyes training over the forest as if there is something in it. But it’s just trees.
“Hobi where the hell have you booked us?” Jungkook laughs, peering out his window with a huge grin. These kinds of things excite him, exploring and whatnot.
“You know, this is not what I was expecting. Even I have goosebumps.” Hoseok shivers. His face looks slightly disappointed. He isn’t a fan of spooky things so hopefully, the cabin is much more welcoming than the road to it.
“It’s okay, you’ve seen the pictures of the cabin and it looked nice you said.” He nods to me, trying to pick up the pace of the car. Another ten minutes later and we are still driving straight down the road. The end not in sight, nor the exit behind us either. Hobi runs a hand through his hair, his whole face dropping into a frown in that familiar disgusted look. The road is so narrow that he won’t be able to turn around, so none of us say anything and he just keeps going.
“This is really getting weird,” Hobi says, his voice shaky. “I can just back us out if you want.”
“No, no, no.” I say, “this has to be the right spot.”
“I’m sure we are almost there,” Koo adds. So he does, a sigh of relief from us all as the road begins to widen and trees begin to clear. There is a little picket sign ahead marking that there is a cabin on the left.
“Finally,” Hobi smiles, pulling around a wide circular clearing, a path to the right, and a short path leading to a small wooden cabin. He pulls around, parking the car in front of where we would be staying. Jungkook is getting giddy in the backseat, opening the door as soon as Hoseok puts us in park. I smile at Hobi who is already seeming a little more relaxed to be at our destination.
We join Jungkook outside, the air still a bit nipply. Hopefully, neither of them has forgotten to pack warmer clothing. All of us are in hoodies and sweatpants as of right now. Jungkook left his things hopping around the clearing, which at the center is a fire pit and some chairs. The fire will warm us up if we want and would shoo away the bugs. Past that is the path, looking like it would lead up to another clearing and the hills Hobi had mentioned. All around us on the other sides are just trees. Without the clearing, it would be just as dark as the road in. Later tonight we’ll probably be too nervous to go outside to even light the fire.
“Smores tomorrow?” Jungkook hums, coming back around to the trunk.
“Let’s get unpacked first and then decide what we are going to do,” I say, taking out my suitcase and the bag of food. Jungkook scoffs, taking his own suitcase along with the cooler.
“Yeah it’s too cold today, so tomorrow sounds good,” Hobi answers him. “And worst-case scenario we do it on the stove inside.”
“There’s a stove?” He asks backward, as we head over to the door.
Hobi gives a little laugh, “It’s a fully functional home. Despite what you would think driving up.” Making me smirk, “Even the door has a key code instead of physical keys.”
“Oh, so it's pretty new.” I nod, as he types in the code making it obvious for us both to see 456782. “Yeah definitely wouldn’t have guessed that.” I look back to the forest, closing in on us as we file in with our things.
“Wow!” Jungkook’s voice brings me back inside, the lights flickering on in the small living room.
“Oh yess.” I nod looking around. It’s well furnished, a couch and a tv, blankets, and pillows dotted all around the room. The kitchen to the left, all stainless steel appliances. There’s a hallway to the right, likely leading to the rooms. While it’s freezing, the thermostat is located next to us on the wall. Hobi immediately turns to it, flipping it up as much as he can shivering and exaggerating the cold.
“What a pad.” Jungkook grins, leading the way into the home. The hallway stops at a blank wall and then turns to the right and goes down, four doors, two on each side and a window at the end of the hall. “One floor?”
“One floor,” Hobi answers, turning into one of the rooms. “Oop,” He comes back out, “That's the bathroom,” he announces, heading to the next door across from him. I peer in, a double bed, looking cozy. Hobi turns back to us outside wagging his finger at us. “This one's mine!” Sticking his tongue out. We shrug, moving down to the next rooms. It isn’t fair really since Hobi had likely seen the images online.
Jungkook took the next room, it was also a double bed, and I curse myself for letting him have it. There is likely a single person bed in the last room and I just knew it. And I was right. I open the door and there it is wrapped in a pink duvet. At least it looked warm and comfy. My room looks the most updated, and their room’s looking dated.
“Aww shit.” I hear Hoseok cry, making me peek my head out into the hall. He doesn’t continue.
“Hoseok?” I call and it sounds like he had tossed something in the room.
“I forgot a mosquito net.” He sighs, peering out his own door to see me. I grin, coming well prepared for this. He isn’t even forgetful but it’s always good to have an extra on hand.
“I got one.” And so I got it for him. While the cabin warms itself we settle into our rooms, helping each other set up our nets. We pack up the fridge and make sure that everything is working properly. The tv doesn’t have any cable signal but there is a DVD player and some random DVD’s in the cabin. At least there will be plenty to do if we can't go outside.
“I’m so glad we didn’t pull up on some creepy run-down haunted-looking building.” Hobi giggles, taking a seat on the couch. “I got a little nervous there.” He smiles crossing his legs.
“A little? Pshh.” Jungkook teases, looking around, and finding his reflection in a beautiful gold framed mirror. I join Hobi, pulling out my phone.
“Aye, none of that.” he makes a click with his tongue, pushing my phone down to my lap. I shake my head, lifting it back up.
“We told Jin that we would text the chat when we got here.” he nods, as I pull up the chat. “Made it safely!” Immediately it returns a failed message. I frown, seeing that there is absolutely not a pinch of service.
“What’s the wifi?” I turn to Hobi who pulls out his phone as well.
“Glamping189 is the name, 456782 is the code.” He reads off of a screenshot. But it isn’t there. In fact, there isn’t anything listed under the available networks at all.
“Ah well, that’s shit.” I groan, turning to Jungkook who just shakes himself from staring at the mirror. Vain much? “Will you look around for a router?” He nods as I get up to help him search. There isn’t one, we search each and every corner but there isn’t one at all.

Strike A Pose || KURTBASTIAN
Kurt looked up from his spot on the floor when he was setting one of the lights, hoping that it would be Sebastian the one who had just arrived, only to see it was the photographer, Peter. He had been kind enough to offer his services for Kurt on that night, taking the pictures and also any video needed so he could get on with what had been his idea lately: to have a business online of his own. He was already quite reknown with several of the critics that were related to Vogue, but instead of just working for someone, he wanted to take that big step in what could be a huge thing for him, and his love for clothes design. And that started that night, be putting his most recent creation on film and images, with his husband as a model. Who better than Sebastian to do that? Although at the moment he was winning a reprimend for being four minutes late.
Sebastian practically flew into the building, wave his visitors card that Kurt had already organised for him. Not that it would have been difficult to get - he was known to the security guards at the front desk for meeting Kurt his lunch on occasion, but this was just faster and saved the paperwork and signing in. And plus, he was running late. Jett had been sleeping on his leg and he felt bad for moving him so he'd let him stay there for maybe a bit longer than he should have. And then he'd stopped for coffee, thinking that if he was going to be late, he may as well be late with coffee. "Sorry, sorry!" He said when he got to the room, now about 10 minutes after the time he and Kurt had agreed on, and put the hand that wasn't holding the tray with three coffees up in surrender, "I know, I'm late. I would have been on time but I stopped to get you a coffee. Mmm... coffee. Smell the coffee, don't think about the time." He held it up to Kurt with a sheepish grin. "And yes, Peter, I got you one too, but unlike my husband's, I don't know what you drink so it's just a cappuccino."
@sexbastianwarbler
The next time the door opened Kurt knew it had to be Sebastian, since he and Peter were there, and they were the only ones with access to the photo studio room that night. He put theboard he was working on down and walked up to the bed with his hands on his hips. "You're lucky that I love and coffee" he said as he grabbed his cup. "-and yes, you. Now we should get to work." He planted a soft kiss on his cheek and walked back to the desk, while Peter made grabby hands at Sebastian to get his coffee. "Okay, so... I was thinking we start with the pictures first, then we can stage an actual runway and get it on video so I can loud on My YouTube channel. I'd make the editing after of course, with the music and effects. We will start with these ensambles here. It's a spring line, so they're not really too heavy clothing anyway."
Sebastian passed Peter his coffee, then went to take a sip of his own. At Kurt's words he choked on his coffee a little bit and stared at Kurt, "a... runway? I thought this was just photos. Now you're making me nervous," he admitted. He had assumed he'd wear some of Kurt's designs, look hot in some photos and that'd be the end. He hadn't realised Kurt was planning a runway clip too, though he knew that some clothing lines used it to show how the clothes moved and actually looked on somebody. So he understood why, he just hadn't been expecting it. "It's fine though. You tell me what to wear and how pretty to look, and I'll do it. So what's first?"
Kurt chuckled. "You? Nervous to be on camera? Come on now, baby. You have all the sass it takes to kill it. Plus, it's not going to be a full length  movie thing, just a couple of minute clip, which only means you would haveto walk up and down that runway there, enough times for Peter to get all the good takes, then it's done. So, you-" He grabbed a burgundy color based ensemble, jacket and pants in said color, while the shirt was white, with a different kind of V-neck cut, just a bit longer down the chest. "You can put this one way for starter, please? There's the booth over there for you to change."
Sebastian took the clothes from Kurt, liking the colour choices, and then looked over at Peter with a wink. "I'm sure Peter wouldn't mind if I give a strip teas- I'm kidding! Okay, I'm going, I'm going." He took a quick sip of his coffee before setting it aside (not wanting it anywhere near the clothes while he was getting changed because that just spelled disaster) and heading behind the booth. He quickly changed, and stepped out, knowing Kurt would want to fix up exactly how the outfit looked. Especially since the focus here was for the clothes, since that's what was being sold. He'd watched him run shoots for Vogue before so - while he'd never been the model - he had a small idea of what to expect.
Both Kurt and Peter snapped their heads up so fast, it almost gave them headrush. Kurt then chuckled, while Peter tried to find a good place where he could stuck his head in, and while Sebastian got changed Kurt hung another ensemble on the racket, a blue colored combined one, only this one had a not so striaght line on the lapels of the jacket. When Sebastian came back out Kurt grabbed a step-on, which he used so the models would stand on it, so he could do any proper fixing. "Get on this, please."
"Yes sir," Sebastian replied with a wink, stepping up onto the stand dutifully, to let Kurt fix up anything with the outfit. When Kurt first told him about his idea to create his own fashion line, he'd agreed straight away, though he'd been apprehensive to see what Kurt came up with to sell. Sometimes he didn't quite get Kurt's designs, which wasn't to say he didn't think his husband was talented - because he was. But he didn't get fashion, whether or not it was Kurt's designs. And to sell to the mass market was different to selling to runways. But the couple of ideas Kurt had showed him so far had been - in his uneducated opinion - brilliantly and easily marketable. "This looks good," he commented, as Kurt fixed it up, "I love the colour."
Kurt looked up at him from his spot on the floor, where he was on his knees fixing the lower ends of the pants. "Thanks. A long path from  being a Puerto Rican pride float, huh?" He chuckled, then got on his feet and gave the jacket a slight tug. "There. All done. Okay so... Let's start with the pictures then, shall we?"
Sebastian laughed, "you're never going to let me live that down, are you? I was a dick in high school, this is well established." He waited and nodded when Kurt said all done, stepping off the step, "sure. You or Peter just tell me how to pose and I'll do that." He wasn't sure what type of photos they'd want, whether it'd be some real simple ones, just standing and the shot focused on the clothes, or whether they'd also be more artistic like a photoshoot, but he was pretty sure they'd turn out great either way.
Kurt chuckled and shook his head. "Oh honey, no. That will last at least a couple of years longer" He nodded at Peter, who came over and lead Sebastian to where the photo shoot spot was, surrounded by a couple of big lights, and a blue background on the wall. There was also a stool there, which Peter told Sebastian he could use at his will, then he put himself behind the camera and told him they would do a couple of test shots to see which angle worked the best.
"It's been nearly ten," Sebastian said in protest, not quite believing how long it had been since high school. Sometimes he still couldn't quite believe that after nearly ten years after high school, here he was - married to Kurt Hummel. The man - well, boy at the time - he wanted to hate. And did for a while. But their chance meeting in New York had sealed their fate, and he couldn't be happier now. He wasn't entirely sure what to do or how to pose... he was confident and happy with how he looked, but he'd never exactly been a model for the camera before. But he knew the focus here would be on how the clothes looked so he tried to do his best - taking direction from both Peter and Kurt.
Kurt worked on the board, where he could arrange the order on which the clothes would be shown, pretty much like on an actual show; every once in a while he would look up and smiled at the way Sebastian looked while trying to look his best for the camera, and it was pretty hot actually. When Peter said to him to give the camera his sexy looks Kurt blushed and buried his head down on the board. His husband's sexy look was his kryptonite.
Sebastian caught Kurt looking away and smirked at him, which Peter caught on camera and said that was exactly what he was looking for. Of course it was. They took plenty of photos, and then some standard ones of just the clothing, from both the back and front - like you would normally see on a website. "Okay, I think that's that outfit done," Peter commented, looking down at the camera, "got plenty of the total look, and each piece individually for the shop pages." Sebastian took the next pieces Kurt gave him and got changed again, and the whole shoot became a rhythm they got into.
Kurt enjoyed loving the way Sebastian eased into it, like it was something he would do every day. He was a natural, with the right attitude, and of course the perfect look. They did another two sets of clothes, which left only one for the actual video. "Baby, it's like you're a fish in the ocean. Like you belong here, you know? You're already my muse, so I suppose this was the logical next step, huh?" Kurt chuckled as he fixed the lapels on his light being, almost asimetric jacket, over a bit darker beige pants and light blue shirt.
Sebastian grinned at Kurt when he said that and gave a short bow in thanks, "why thanks, babe." He winked at him, but secretly he was glad the photos were turning out (or so Peter was saying, he hadn't seen any of them). While he never doubted his looks persay, he had worried that Peter or Kurt would think he was too stiff, or just not right. But he found he was actually enjoying it, now they'd got into a rhythm of Kurt dressing and accessorising him, and Peter telling him how to pose (with input from Kurt). "This is actually fun," he admitted to Kurt as he fixed the jacket, "hopefully it all comes together in the end. Okay! How do you want me?" He said to Peter, as he went back to the shooting area to shoot the last outfit.
Kurt almost let slip something like 'oh, I can tell what or how I want you right now', but he stopped himself just in time. He couldn't deny that seeing Sebastian like that was making him really horny, but he was far too busy to focus on anything else. Peter gave him some intructions to walk up and down the runway they had set in the room, then turned a couple of fans on, which made the light blue fabrics that hung off the wall float around the stage. "Okay, give me that sexy look again, Sebastian" Peter said, then got closer to him and spoke quietly. "Focus on Kurt. Model just for him, and forget about everything else." He smiled at him, then took his place behind the set camera.
Sebastian laughed, "oh, Peter, if I was modelling just for Kurt I wouldn't be wearing any clothes." His smile grew wider at the unamused looked Peter gave him and then he raised his hands in a surrender motion, "sorry, sorry. I'm focusing." He shook his hands out, tilting his head from side to side to snap him out of it and then nodded, "right, I'm good." He looked over at Kurt like Peter had told him too, focusing on him as he smirked, changing positions as Peter directed.
Kurt busied himself uploading the pictures from Peter's camera to his laptop so he could study them and pick the best ones, although in this case it would be difficult, since they were all perfect. Of course, it was Sebastian. At  one moment he looked up and caught his husband looking at him in that particular way he knew made him weak on the knees; he found himself staring at the way his body seemed to sway to the music, and even if it was a short thing, it felt like it went on for hours. 'Kurt?' He blinked back to reality and saw Peter next to him. "Hmm?" 'I was asking if it was kay. If you liked it at all'' Kurt cleared his throat and nodded. "It was perfect, Peter. As usual, you're always the best. And on the plus side-" He looked up and saw Sebastian coming towards him. "-you also had the perfect model" he finished with a grin on his face.
Sebastian smirked when he heard Kurt's words, walking into earshot. "Aw, thanks babe." He leaned in and kissed him quickly, wiping his hand across his forehead. The lights from the shoot that Peter had used to get everything looking good had been hot so he was sweating a bit. "Do you need anymore shots tonight?"
Kurt quickly grabbed a couple of tissues and handed them to Sebastian so he could clean his forehead, then shook his head. "I think that's enough for now. I'll do all the necessary edits after Peter sends it all to me, and work on it then. You can take those off now, baby." Peter said that if that was all for the time being he would go, and Kurt and Sebastian thanked him and said good night.
Sebastian waved and watched Peter leave, leaning on the table with his head propped up on his hand. He smiled at him in goodbye and then as soon as the door was shut behind him, turned to grin at Kurt, leaning in. "So... when you say take these off..."
Kurt looked up from his tablet, where he was typing in some final details, and grinned. "I meant just that. Leave them hanging inside the booth, so they can be picked up in the morning." He licked his lips. "Whether you decide to put your own clothes back on or not, that's entirely up to you, baby." He giggled, then pressed Save on his screen and put it down. "Would you like me to help you with that?"
Sebastian pouted when Kurt told him that, but he supposed having his husband take them off would likely end in disaster. "It's okay," he replied and went behind the screen, taking the clothes off and putting them on the hanger. And then - of course - he did exactly as Kurt had suggested. He left his clothes from earlier still thrown over the screen, waiting to be put back on, and stepped back out naked, wrapping his arms around Kurt. "You're so hot when you run photoshoots like that, did you know? Bossing people around."
Aware of what he had asked Sebastian to do, and with the adreanline of seeing his own designs in display like that, Kurt worked quickly in finishing what needed to be done, so when he felt his arms around him, so familiar and warm, he smiled and leaned back on him. "Hmm... Is that right? Is that you're way of saying you like me bossing you around, baby?" He moaned softly as he felt his cock poking his lower back.
Sebastian smirked and rested his head on Kurt's shoulder, "mmm... maybe I am. It was hot. You were so confident." He trailed a finger along Kurt's arm and pressed his lips to his cheek, "didn't you have fun?"
Kurt bit his lip down as the heat slowly rised inside of him, his eyelids fluttering when his lips touched his skin. "Oh, I did. I sure did. Doing what I love, with the man I love... That's everything to me..." He chuckled softly, his hand reaching back to let his fingers brush over Sebastian's erection. "So, you liked me being the boss? Does that mean you would do anything I'd ask you right now, baby...?"
Sebastian's lips kissed his way down Kurt's skin, making their way down his neck. He gasped softly against his skin when he felt Kurt's fingers ghost over him. "Mmm, you should try it and see," he replied, teasingly.
Kurt bit his lip down, his eyelids fluttering as the warmth of Sebastian'ss lips against his skin shot through him like fire, his hand moving on his erection slowly but firmly. "Mmm... How about.... you pull my pants down, bend me over this desk and let me feel that wicked tongue of yours, hmm?" He turned his head a bit so hee could look at him and grinned. "That's an order."
Sebastian smirked wickedly when Kurt turned to look at him, "is that so? Well, in that case, sir, yes, sir." He winked at him with a laugh, but then spun him around to face him so he could kiss him deeply as he walked them over to the desk. When they reached the desk, he kissed him one last time before turning him around and bending him over it. "Stay there," he said, walking over to check if the door was locked because he wasn't entirely sure if the building was empty since he knew Kurt spend a lot of late nights here, or Peter could have come back to get something he forgot... he wouldn't want somebody to walk in and for Kurt to get in trouble or something. Once he was satisfied it was locked, he walked back to Kurt, and leaned his body over him, "where was I?" He kissed the back of his neck, letting his hands slip under the fabric of Kurt's shirt before making their way down to pull Kurt's trousers and briefs off in one go.
Kurt gasped when their lips met again, his fingers sliding through the man's chesnut hair and gripping it while he was moved backwards to the desk. His body felt like about to explode when he was bent over like that, and from the position he was he couldn't see what Sebastian was doing, but he did hear the 'click' of the lock on the door. He smirked when he heard his voice behind him again, his fingers fisting onto nothing when his hands touched him in the way that never failed to make hm crazy. He gasped when all the sudden his ass was bare naked and totally exposed. "Fuck, baby that's so hot... mmm..." He wiggled his ass at him and giggled.
Sebastian pushed Kurt's shirt up his back so he could kiss his way down it, but he didn't waste time in taking it off. He moved his lips down Kurt's back slowly, mouthing along the skin until he knelt down behind him. He spread his cheeks with his hands. "Tell me what you want again," he said, his voice low, his breath brushing against Kurt's entrance.
Kurt was glad when Sebastian finally took his shirt off him, the fabrics much in the way of everything he was craving to feel at that moment. He moaned softly as each peck on his already heated skin felt like a blowtorch, then grunted when he felt his man's breath touching him in the most intimate, and dirty way. After clearing his throat as best as he could he looked at  him behind his shoulder. "I want your tongue in me now. "
Sebastian looked up a bit, just so he could see Kurt's head looking over his shoulder at him. He smirked and nodded. "As you wish," he replied, a throwback to the time Kurt had made him watch Princess Bride. He leaned  forward, breathing out slowly, teasingly, before he pushed his tongue forward, slipping into Kurt's entrance just slightly, before pressing in a little deeper.
Kurt bit his lip down when he met Sebastian's gaze, and although he tried to be the dominant part on that particular ocassion, he was very aware of the effect those green esmeralds had on him when he looked at him like that. His eyes rolled to the back of his head when he finally felt the warm and moisty tip pushing slightly through his walls, his whole body jerking a little as a rush of heat went through it, then groaned almost too loudly when he finally slid in, his hands now fisted in small, tight balls as he allowed himself to truly feel the lust taking over. "Oh my god... oh.. mmm.. fuck... yes... yes... oh baby... ah..."
Sebastian narrowed his tongue, sliding it deeper inside Kurt's tight walls, fueled by the sounds his husband was making. He held onto his ass as he did, steadying himself, as he moved his head moving back and forth as his tongue kept sliding inside of him with increasing ease.
Kurt grunted and leaned his head down, his arms now used as pillow under him, but soon he had to move them to grasp onto the edges of the desk, the increasing heat making it difficult for him to keep balance on his feet. He bit his lip down so he would try not to be too loud, but that was becoming less unlikely with each passing second. He reached down and grabbed onto Sebastian's hair, pushing his face deeper in his ass. "Your tongue feels so good in me... fuck... mmm..." He moaned and let  go of him when his body gave a sudden jerk. "You need to fuck me soon, baby... I want it so bad..."
Sebastian let out a muffled chuckle when Kurt pushed him deeper but didn't complain in the slightest, letting his tongue sink deeper inside of him. He narrowed it, moving it in and out of the tight muscles, swallowing his taste. He pulled away from him and licked his lips, "is that another order?" He asked, with a teasing grin, before ducking his head back down and pushing his tongue into him again.
If Kurt were to have his way, he would have made Sebastian eaten him out until he came, and then some more, but he also knew he wanted so much more than just that, no matter how good his husband's wicked tongue felt inside of him. He grabbed onto his hair and pulled him off his ass, the grin on his face mixed with a flush of lust. "Get up and fuck me, Smythe. Now."
Sebastian grinned, and flicked his tongue against Kurt's entrance one more time before standing up behind him. "Sir, yes, sir," he said with a wink. He was still completely naked from before, so he didn't have to worry about the hassle of clothing or anything of the sort. Lining himself up against Kurt, he started to slowly push forward, his hands gripping to Kurt's hips so he could steady himself as the tight muscle wrapped around him.
Without having to look behind him, Kurt could feel Sebastian moving, and that alone made his heart race, his teeth biting on his lip hard. His body jerked a little when he first felt him pushing in, his own hands reaching back to hold onto Sebastian's on his hips, while he allowed  the initial burn to pass, his cock twitching as the heat of it all came down.  He took a deep breath and pushed his ass back on him just a bit.
Sebastian pressed forward until he was completely buried inside of Kurt, stopping to let him adjust. He bent over him, pressing soft kisses at the back of his neck. "Tell me when you're good babe," he said, his voice low, resisting the urge to move his hips just yet.
Kurt whimpered as he felt Sebastian sliding all the way into him, his knees shaking a bit before he focused in relaxing enough. He licked his lips and reached up when he felt Sebastian's breath on his neck, his fingers grabbing onto his hair. "Mm... I'm good now... Move..."
Sebastian's grip on Kurt's hips tightening as he nodded. Biting down on his lip, he slowly pulled himself out of Kurt before pressing back in. He started a slow and steady pace, moving in and out of his husband. "God, you feel so good," he groaned.
Kurt moaned out loud, eyes fluttering as he felt Sebastian moving behind him, feeling like every move buried him an inch further inside of him. "Fuck, you do too, baby.. ah.. ahhh... oh, so big... mm..." He licked his lips a bit, his hips slowly rolling to let him in a bit more, then he fully started moving back on him, his ass bouncing against his lap, as he fucked himself shamelessly on his husband's cock.
Sebastian couldn't help the smirk that appeared on his face when Kurt started practically fucking himself on him. "Babe, you're doing all the work," he said with a laugh, but god, it felt so good. He held onto his hips and started thrusting inside of him, faster and harder until he was practically slamming forward, deep into his husband.
Kurt chuckled breathlessly. "Aren't you suppose to do as I say?" he quiped back at him, then he moaned loudly when he finally started slamming into him, their bodies smacking together harshly as he reached deep inside of him with every thrust he gave. "Oh gosh, yes.. yes.. just like that, baby.. mm... fucking harder... harder..."
"Harder?" Sebastian asked, with a smirk, "I can do that." With his hands digging into Kurt's hips, his thrusts quickened and he fucked into Kurt harder. He moaned as Kurt's tight walls swallowed him in, pounding forward, hitting the spot inside Kurt with every thrust.
Kurt let out a strangled cry when Sebastian pounded hard into him, their bodies smacking together loudly, and also making the desk underneath Kurt squeak dangerously. With the sweet and thorogh assault to his soft spot he did his best to hold back, but he knew it wouldn't be long before he was done. "Baby.. I'm so close.. Fuck, don't stop... don't.. stop... ah.. ahh.. fuck.. ngg..."
Sebastian let go of Kurt's hips with one hand, and slid it between Kurt's body and the desk, wrapping his fingers around his cock. "Not ... fuck ... planning on ... mmm ... it." He grunted, continuing to slam into Kurt, his hand now working his cock in tandem with his hips, wanting to feel the way Kurt clenched around him.
Kurt gasped when he felt Sebastian's skillful hand around his throbbing member, his teeth sinking through his lips as he felt the heat within him raise because of what his husband was doing to him. He stood back up a bit, his hand reaching back to grab onto what he could of Sebastian's hair, then pulled it hard, making his head come closer, and he kissed him wantonly while his body was being fucked in the most dirty and perfect way. "Fuck, I'm gonna come soon, baby... ahhh.... mmm..." He could feel his hole starting to clench around Sebastian's cock.
Sebastian grunted when Kurt's fingers slid in and grabbed his hair, not protesting as their lips clashed together. The new angle made their bodies press together even more, the sound of skin slapping together still being heard around the room. When he felt Kurt's muscles clench around his cock he moaned, using the one hand that was still holding onto his hip guide him, as he slammed forward, his own orgasm hitting him at the same time as Kurt's, a wave of pleasure crashing over his body.
Kurt whimpered when Sebastian's pace got much faster and harder, both their orgasms hitting at the same time, feeling like a wave that cascaded on both of them hard. With his body still jerking with the tingles of his climax he turned his head to look at Sebastian and grinned. "Wow... Just when I think you cant possibly be more perfect-"
Sebastian gave a cheeky grin, "well, you know me. I love proving the world wrong." Their bodies moved together slowly as they both came down from their highs and then they stayed like that for a few moments, breathing heavily, until Sebastian pulled out of Kurt carefully. "I stopped thinking you couldn't get more perfect a long time ago," he pulled Kurt off the desk and spun him around so he was facing him, "every day I wake up and think you're more perfect than the day before."
Kurt hummed softly while they stayed together, deeply connected like that, enjoying the feeling of his husband's arms around him, then winced slightly when he pulled out of him, the ugly empty feeling only made better when he spun him around and he put his arms around his neck. "Why thank you, my love. It's good to know that I can still surprise you" he said with a little giggle, then kissed him soundly and sighed happily. "We should get dressed. I'm starting to get a bit cold here" he said, both of them standing there naked as they were,
Sebastian nodded, smiling at Kurt. "Well, good. Because you can and do. Like today, you owned this shoot. I can't wait to see the photos and how your website is going to turn out. Just wait, people will be queuing up to buy your stuff." He laughed, "I've got changed so many times today, what's one more?" He gave Kurt a quick kiss on the lips and they got dressed, Sebastian getting his clothes from behind the screen first.
Kurt chuckled and kissed him back before letting him go so he could get dressed again. "I sure hope so. Either way, doing this with you was a lot of fun, baby." He too got dressed again quickly, then joined him behind the screen. "We should definitely do it again. Both things, actually" he said with a cheeky grin, then gathered all his things before taking Sebastian's hand and leaving the studio, and the building.
END SCENE.

Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I have just finished Miss Saigon on Broadway. During that, I did a couple of readings of a new musical and also a workshop of a new musical. It was really amazing and at the same time exhausting. They call it “double duty.” I would rehearse in the morning through the afternoon and then go straight to the theater to do the show. The amount of lifting in Miss Saigon, I said, “I will never do that again!” [laughs] All of them are exciting though! One of them is a workshop of The Sting. They are doing a musical version of it and that’s exciting!
Q) We’re seeing you on “American Crime Story.” How was your character Modesto Cunanan originally described to you?
A) I would say, without being simplistic about him, he’s a person who thinks he is a big fish in a small pond. He wants to swim with the big sharks in the ocean. He has this really distorted vision of the American dream – how it should be and how you get it. So, he has built huge, elaborate lies around him.
Q) That must be where his son gets it.
A) Yeah! They didn’t give him a chance. That’s exactly how they raised their child – to think he is special and better than everyone else. Even his siblings. There are instances where a child gets lucky and gets away from that because that’s not how they are built. For the most part, you raise your child like that and they will grow up like that.
Q) What kind of research did you conduct into playing this real life individual?
A) First of all, I remember this. In 1997, my wife and I were about to leave Germany where we were doing Miss Saigon. Maybe we were back in the states by then, but the one thing that resonated with me is that he is part Filipino. It sounded exciting in a distorted way because I thought, “Oh my God! I’m Filipino!” When I auditioned, I tried to find out as much as I could about Modesto and found out where he came from. I found clippings of interviews with writeups about him, but not a lot from him personally. So, what I gathered were YouTube videos where they are trying to get to him, but all you see is him in the background waving them away. As soon as I got to set, Matt Bomer (my director) was really amazing about it because he gave me a copy of Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors, which the TV show is based on. I found out so much about him! Also, I had a moment with Maureen talking about him because he’s met him. Also, Tom Rod Smith who is the main writer of the show and I asked so many questions about him that helped me prepare for the scenes.
Q) What was the process you went through in order to get into character?
A) laughs] When people ask me my process, I don’t know how to answer that. What I do is try to trace the history of the person. Where did he come from? How did he get to this place? How did he get what he wanted? Me, being a Filipino, that kind of helped me because I understand where he came from – the need to get out of one place. For him, it was how did he get to be somewhere where everyone is talking about streets paved with gold and grow money from trees. That’s how Filipinos talk about America. Watching Hollywood movies developed our mentality about America without being there. So, all of this wanting and needing – I try to grasp that from the character of Modesto. And the writing helped me so much because it was so good. It just flowed. Also, the direction and guidance from Matt Bomer helped me a lot.
Q) Was that the most challenging part of your portrayal – that there wasn’t much information on him?
A) When you’re trying to portray someone who actually lived you don’t want to overdo it. You want to do them justice and not just show them as the bad guy so you can also show them as the good guy. You have to humanize this person and audiences should be able to understand and go, “Yeah, I know this guy.” It’s not just black and white. So, every time I do a scene I try to talk…This is the biggest TV role that I’ve done. So, I always turn to my director and ask, “How was that? It felt real. It felt good. How did it look?” I want to really do justice to the role and to the character, who actually walked in those shoes.
Q) What was it like working with Ryan Murphy and Matt Bomer?
A) Unfortunately, Ryan was not there. He was already working on his show in New York. So, I didn’t meet him until they saw my show on Broadway. When I flew out of New York to begin filming in LA, Matt Bomer met with me at Fox Studios and we talked for a long time. We sat down and talked about Modesto Cunanan and how he wants to bring out this character and what he knows about and how he wanted to shoot this – which helped me a lot! For my roles in other TV shows, I was not really playing a big part. So, this was basically the first time I was directed and guided by a director. Matt is an amazing artist. He is so talented. He is such an amazing human being…And he looks like that! It’s not fair! [laughs] I love him. I love working with him. I wouldn’t mind being directed by him again. Also, Dan Minahan (who directed the ninth episode) is an amazing human being and just so open. Dan is one of the executive producers as well. I was just very blessed to have been given this opportunity.
Q) What were some of your most memorable moments from filming “American Crime Story?
A) There are two that stand out. One of them is a very intense scene with Darren Criss and it was so dynamic. It was so amazing and intense that we just went for each other. He was such a giving actor. Even when the camera was not on him he was just so giving. I felt like, “Oh my God! I’m an actor! I’m a TV actor!” It felt so good and it gave me so much confidence. The second one goes back to Darren Criss. I can’t say enough about him. I’m just so excited for him because this is a role that will showcase him and really show what he has – what he is about. He has so much to give. We were shooting this scene that was really difficult (which I can’t really say now) and we were having a hard time with it. We were rehearsing it and I kept cringing. Darren looked at me and said, “I understand.” And we talked about it. He talked me through, he calmed me down and said, “We don’t have to go there unless you want to.” He put me at ease and it was so tender. He was so gentle with me. He understood my dilemma. I felt so safe. I get emotional talking about it. He’s amazing! I love him. I love them all!
Q) What is it about the Gianni Versace story that makes it so fascinating?
A) I think it’s because it is that time where being gay…Maybe it was a turning point about talking about it and being open about it. It was something that even the powers that be during that time were trying to push aside as not important thinking, “He’s only killing homosexuals anyway.” When that happens…When a big name is one of the victims it becomes more than that and people actually had to do something about it. I think it is the failure to understand. Failure to open minds and accept people and accept that we’re all the same. It’s a shame that it took a famous person to die for them to take it seriously.
Q) You are a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the instant fan feedback you’ll receive to episodes?
A) I don’t know. [laughs] I joined social media because it was fun. It’s fun to do my thing and share it with people who follow me. I would 99.9% of the people who follow me are really nice people and really positive people. I might not be looking forward to the negative ones. I tend to take it personally and I don’t know if I can handle that. I will engage positive people just talking about beautiful weather, but the negative ones I don’t know if I have the patience or the cleverness to tackle that. For the most part, I will talk to the positive ones because life is too short.
Q) What did you personally take away from working on the show?
A) I always believe that things happen for a reason and I think this is something that happened at the right time. I was having a conversation with Darren Criss about the show and he said, “I’m just so blessed, but it’s interesting that this blessing comes at the expense of someone else because it happened to someone else and now I’m playing it and it’s such a great role.” I told him I feel the same way. Someone had to do a horrible thing for us to get this. But I’m just grateful and if we can shine a light on this story and to this topic then I’m very humbled. And if this produces more work than I would humbly accept it. Amen.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) My deepest gratitude. And I apologize for not being as interesting as a lot of people in the industry, but I promise to work hard and tell a lot of stories. And tell them well.

Fantasia (1940)
I thought this review would be short and then I just sort of kept writing. Sorry about that.
The third film in the Disney Animated Canon is the first anthology film, and to this day the longest feature film Disney has ever released. Early Disney films hang around hour, Renaissance films hang around 90 minutes, and Revival/modern era films generally around 100 minutes. The original and restored cuts of Fantasia are 126 minutes (just over 2 hours), and it was originally released with a 15 minute intermission. Similar to Snow White, this one seems like just as much an experiment as a feature film, as it’s essentially a series of music videos for classical music. It began life as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which was meant to be a Silly Symphonies short that would be a comeback for Mickey Mouse. Then the budget went past what Disney would make back from a short, so Disney animated 6 more sequences, all set to classical music, and threw in live action scenes of music critic Deems Taylor as a Master of Ceremonies and the Philadelphia Orchestra (who recorded all the music except The Sorcerer’s Apprentice). It works out to be significantly longer than either of the preceding films in the canon, at 2 hours.
This is the first Disney Animated Canon film I’d seen at all as a child - I saw the Night On Bald Mountain short at school once, although I had very faint memories of it and I have no idea why we were watching it. And my teacher called it Night On Bare Mountain, for some reason, I specifically remember that. Also my childhood association with a few pieces of classical music may have affected my opinions on a few of the recordings.
After Taylor explains the idea behind the film, the first piece of music beings. He shows back up between every segment of the movie to introduce each piece of music and what the animation will do.
Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (the generic creepy castle pipe organ song) opens on footage of the orchestra, mostly in silhouette, against brightly lit coloured backgrounds. A few minutes in, it turns to strange abstract animation, which continues to the end of the song. At the end of the song, it returns to the orchestra. There’s not really much to say about this part. The music is good, the visuals are nice, but it’s not particularly memorable.
Taylor introduces the next piece with a comment that’s become hilarious in hindsight. I thought it was dry sarcasm while I was watching the movie. While explaining the history of the suite, he says that “the ballet it’s from isn’t very popular, but the suite is”. He’s talking about Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Apparently the ballet was a huge flop on initial release, and didn’t become the Christmas classic it is today until the late 60’s, which also explains why the animation has absolutely nothing to do with the story. It follows fairies, dancing plants, fish, and the changing seasons as brought on by the fairies, who show up again at the end. The dancing flowers were particularly memorable and fun to watch.
Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is the most iconic short, starring Mickey Mouse as the titular apprentice, who enchants a broom to carry water for him, despite a lack of control over his magic. He marches around with the broom a few times, falls asleep, conducts the music while pointing at the starts and causing them to twinkle brighter in his dream, and wakes up to find the room flooded. He murders the broom with an axe, but the broom reforms and every splinter or broom forms a whole new one and each one carries more water. The sorcerer, who is not named on screen, but is officially named Yen Sid (real creative name, Disney) wakes up, comes downstairs, fixes the problem, and swats Mickey with the broom. This one feels most like a Silly Symphonies short, because that’s what it was originally meant to be. Probably the most memorable overall, compared to the other shorts which mostly have a few memorable shots or scenes. The music is good, the animation is good, and it introduced a redesign of Mickey that’s still in use today.
Before Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring, Mickey walks up to the conductor, tugs on his coat tail, says hi, and leaves. The lighting allows Mickey to appear entirely in silhouette, hiding the fact that animation was decades away from Roger Rabbit style integration with live action. Then someone knocks over the chimes, which is meant to be some kind of comic relief, I guess.
The Rite Of Spring opens on the Earth forming, and has a spectacular sequence with lava and volcanoes followed by what was probably at the time a believed to be scientifically accurate depiction of the rise and fall of the Dinosaurs. A T-Rex fights a Stegosaurus, while the other dinosaurs watch as if they’re about to film the fight and put it on youtube or something, and then all leave when the Stegosaurus loses. They look almost comically disappointed by the ending, as if they’d lost a small bet over the winner instead of just watched a death. Then all the vegetation dies, they try to migrate, they all die, and the Earth floods. Stravinsky was the only composer alive to see his music put to animation in Fantasia, and he hated the sequence. I didn’t. The lava and the dinosaur fight are both great, and I’m not familiar with The Rite Of Spring so the rearrangement of the piece doesn’t annoy me.
After this, Deems Taylor announces an intermission. In some cut’s, anyway. I’ll get into that later. Following the intermission, there’s a short jam session, and then we’re introduced to The Soundtrack, a stylized representation of the soundtrack on a reel of film.
Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony follows a group of mythological creatures holding a festival for Bacchus, which is interrupted when Zeus (looking an awful lot like his later appearance in Hercules, but blue) decides to throw lightning at everyone for no discernable reason other than being a dick. The animation is nice, but this short is better known because of the censorship of one of the centaurs, who has been cut from the film though a combination of pan and scan zoom ins, re-editing, and being completely erased from one scene, on the grounds that it was… racist. Really racist. Starting with the 1969 re-release, Fantasia has been completely blackface donkey centaur free, which is nice. This segment was good. The music is nice, but the animation wasn’t a huge standout to me.
Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours was, to be completely honest, my least favorite short. It’s about dancing animals, focusing for most of the short on Hippos and Alligators. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t stick out to me the way some of them did. The music was good, the animation was good, there’s nothing actually wrong with it, it was just not as good as the rest of the shorts.
The final short, and my personal favorite, is the only one that consists of more than one piece of classical music. Mussorgsky’s Night On Bald Mountain and Schubert’s Ave Maria share a short, which contains some stellar animation and great creepy imagery. Chernabog the demon (heavily implied to be Satan himself by Deems Taylor in his introduction for the short, but he’s since been identified as an obscure Slavic deity, because… reasons) is suitably macabre and creepy, and most of the short consists of him being worshipped by ghosts and skeletons, before the church bells ring, the spooky scary followers go back to the graveyards, and Chernabog is forced back into the mountain by the bells and the sunlight. A procession of people walking through the forest carrying candles sings Ave Maria, signalling the coming of the morning. The music is great, the animation is great, and I’m probably biased because I love horror movies but I just really like this part of the movie.
Fantasia has been re-edited several times. Besides the removal of that one racist centaur, there’s been re-releases that remove or trim the live action sections, resulting in Deems Taylor being dubbed due to lost audio in some of his restored scenes in some cuts of the movie.
On the subject of audio, it was the first commercial film released in Stereo Sound. The original release boasted the “Fantasound” speaker system. Given that the movie relies so much on visuals and sound, I feel like I haven’t been able to truly appreciate it, given that I watched it on a fairly small screen, wearing headphones. It deserves to be watched in at least 5.1 Surround (or if you have the setup for it, there was a blu-ray release with 7.2 Surround). I, as a broke college student, do not have a large screen tv, or a surround sound system, but I imagine that they would add a lot to the film. However, it’s currently in the Disney Vault with the exception of Netflix.
The animation also improves dramatically overall compared to Snow White and Pinocchio. Rite Of Spring and Night On Bald Mountain in particular have scenes that are vast improvements on the previous films. I would love to see a theatrical re-release of this.
It was meant to be updated and changed every year, with segments being taken out and replaced with new ones, but this idea was scrapped when it didn’t do well at the box office - World War II cutting off distribution to Europe didn’t help it’s chances - despite being mostly critically acclaimed on release. Later re-releases helped it to gain its current acclaim, though it’s still considered somewhat of a mixed bag, and it’s aimed more at adults or teenagers than the rest of the canon. The usual target age group of Disney is likely to just get bored for most of the runtime, then terrified by Night On Bald Mountain. It eventually received a sequel, Fantasia 2000, in 1999, 54 years later. If we’re all lucky I’ll get around to reviewing the sequel faster than Disney got around to making it. So worth a watch if you haven’t seen it, I guess, although I can’t say I’ll be rewatching it any time soon unless I’m given the chance to see it with a really good audio setup.
Also, apparently the 2010 Nick Cage movie The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is supposed to be an expansion of the scene of the same name from Fantasia so I guess this is the only disney movie that can claim have a remake starring Nick Cage. And, I guess, the first to get a live action remake?
