How Sakura’s Love Interest Ruined Her Character Development
Alright. I promise this is the last Sakura related content I’ll do for a while. But after seeing several other people on here talk about about this subject, I thought it would be interesting to discuss. This isn’t gonna be a full on analysis, rather my thoughts as someone who loves Sakura and was disappointed to see how her character was handled in canon.
I think a lot of the fandom can be agree that Sakura’s biggest flaw was her love for Sasuke. Love is typically supposed to be a character’s strength, but unfortunately for our pink cherry blossom, it’s her weakness. And her downfall.
Now, I’ve already made it clear what my feelings on SasuSaku are. I like the pairing, they could have been better developed and aren’t nearly terrible as people claim they are. However, it would be ignorant of me to not acknowledge that canon Sasusaku is… kinda shitty.
Don’t get my wrong, they have their cute moments in blank period, like Sasuke asking Sakura to wear the clan crest, but things start going downhill when they get married and the plot of Burrito rolls around. Sakura is left to be a single mother while Sasuke is off god knows where for that stupid space alien/ “remains of Kaguya” whatever plot. Sasuke never writes to check up on his family, it’s implied that Sarada doesn’t remember him at all or what he looks like, and Sakura is left there trying to assure her poor daughter that Sasuke is doing this because he loves them. But when Sasuke comes back, he rarely acknowledges or wants to spend time with them at all. Not to mention, he seems to care more about Naruto’s kid than his own. Naruto suffers from this problem as well, but that’s a discussion for another time.
For the canon endgame, Kishimoto certainly doesn’t write any of his characters being happy in their relationships.
Anyway, Sakura and her character development. It may not have been grand as her teammates, but it was still there. Sakura went from a naive girl that was obsessed with boys and her looks to someone who acknowledged that she had to work harder if she wanted to help and protect those she cared for. She went from disliking and envying Naruto to someone who was willing to throw her ninja career away so her friend could follow his dream. She wanted to help Naruto to bring Sasuke back, but realized she wasn’t strong enough, so she went to Tsuande for help and become a damn good medical ninja as a result. She became more confident in herself and was always there to support her friends. She never needed an epic fight or a tramatic backstory, I would say her development was pretty great.
But then all of that gets thrown away whenever Sasuke comes into the picture. Sakura may be able to stand up for others, but never does she stand up for herself when it comes to Sasuke. When he belittles her in the War Arc for simply asking him what was going on, she gets all quiet and sad. Defeated. Worst part is that Naruto can’t even stand up for her properly.
The kunoichi who broke off Kaguya’s horn and aided in sealing her, therefore saving the world, is left a begging, whimpering mess for Sasuke to come back to her, to come back to team 7. And what does she get in return? A genjustu of him killing her.
And just when you think oh this has to finally get her to realize that she can do so much better than him, or at least get her to step back and reevaluate her feelings, let her spend time away from him, it’s just forgotten about! Forget traumatizing and hurting her, it’s okay because Sasuke apologized and now she wants to go with him. Don’t get me wrong, I do think that was a genuine apology, but the fact that she was just expected to forgive him at the snap of a finger was infuriating. And down right sad.
It doesn’t help that nobody else comments on it, or tells Sakura “hey, what he did was pretty shitty, you didn’t deserve that.” Or stand up for her at all. Kakashi kinda did, but it was so weak.
In Naruto, a woman’s role is to support the men, because what else are they good for? And if they ever move on from a guy they like, they’re a “terrible person,” in Kishimoto’s words. Whatever improved or developed Sakura’s character, it reverted backwards or was simply forgotten for Sasuke. Because Sakura loves him, she can never disagree or argue or fight with him, because that would make her a bad person.
Sakura had the potential to become one of the greatest heroines in anime, but that was all thrown away becasue of her misogynistic creator and his idiotic editors. She deserved better, every female character in Naruto deserved better, and burrito should have never happened because it’s an abomination to the Naruto franchise.

The Problem with the Canon Naruto Ships
I’m too tired to really get into this and break it down or theorize about where this stems from, so I’m just gonna word vomit and hope it makes a lick of sense.
Have any of you noticed that most, if not all, Naruto characters have no reason behind why they “love” the characters they do?
Like, we don’t have any canon reason why the canon ships started dating, let alone got married (don’t mention the novels, I will ignore you). I’m not saying that none of the Naruto characters have redeeming or likeable qualities, what I’m saying is that you don’t “fall in love” with everyone who shows you care/concern/human decency (depends what ship we’re talking about).
Sure, Naruto might think Hinata’s sweet, but you don’t “fall in love” with someone because they’re nice (I know about the pain pit, but ninja are expected to risk death for their comrades, so that’s a pretty moot point). Hinata might look up to Naruto, but you don’t “fall in love” with someone because you admire them. Sakura might think Sasuke’s cool, but you don’t “fall in love” with someone because you find them attractive. Sasuke might… And please don’t make me guess the in-world reasoning behind the other canon ships.
I know that it would be pretty unreasonable to expect an engaging, well-developed love story out of a shounen action, but I don’t think asking for something to explain how we got from point a to point b is too much. Give me ONE meaningful conversation between the two. A SINGULAR two-way confession scene. HALF of a flashback or internal monologue. Just something to explain how we went from “They seem pretty cool/I have a crush on them” to “I married them”.
The worst part is that I can think of plenty of opportunities for these scenes to happen without diverting the plot at all.
Also, this goes for non-canon ships too. (I’ll keep this short since the canon ships are where this is an actual problem.) Naruto has no reason to love Sakura. Rock Lee has no reason to love Sakura. Ino has no reason to love Sasuke. Karin barely has a reason to like Sasuke. In case anyone’s thinking it, Naruto and Sasuke are also pretty shaky in this category.
Sorry for this turning into a bit of a rant, but I think about Naruto shipping a lot and this always sticks out to me.

How I would imagine Sasusaku's final moments if they were to die in battle together married but haven’t had Sarada yet...enjoy....
(TW:death)
Sasuke reached out with his sole hand, his body trembling as he strained to move. Sakura, her breathing growing shallower, fought to crawl towards him using her forearms.
"Sakura... Don't... you're going to—" Sasuke's voice faltered.
"I have to heal you," she gasped, finally being in arms reach of Sasuke. Her body was diagonal to his. She stained as she began stretching her hand over his chest, Sakura realized her chakra was completely depleted. Time was running out, and there was no chance for her to restore enough chakra to be of any use to them before their lives slipped away.
Locking eyes with Sasuke, horror filled Sakura's gaze. "I'm so sorry," she cried, tears streaming down her face. "I can't..."
"It's okay... it's okay," Sasuke reassured her, his voice trembling with pain and emotion.
Suddenly, a medical ninja spotted the two fatally wounded ninjas on the battlefield. Rushing to their aid, another ninja joined in.
"We have to heal them," one of the ninjas insisted.
"The wounds are too severe," Sakura winced, her voice filled with agony.
"Please, let us at least try," pleaded the medical ninja.
"You might buy us a few more minutes, but after that, there's no point in expending your efforts on us," Sakura managed to say, a weak smile tugging at her lips. Even in her final moments, she continued to teach.
"Hey," Sasuke called out to the assisting ninja, his voice strained. "Can you lift me and bring me closer to my wife... Please?"
The medical ninja hesitated, knowing that moving them would only extend their suffering. "Even with healing, we can't move your body...it'll lessen your time--"
"Then move me. I want to be right next to him," Sakura interrupted breathlessly, determination in her eyes. Sasuke's took ahold of her hand that was on his chest.
With utmost care, the two ninjas lifted Sakura, her painful groans filling the air. They gently placed her beside Sasuke, who never once released her hand, enduring the searing pain in his wounded arm.
As their eyes met, they were lost in each other's gaze. Tears welled up in Sasuke's eyes, and a single tear rolled down his cheek. Sakura followed suit, and her sobs filled the air.
Even the medical ninja, working diligently to heal Sasuke, couldn't help but be moved to tears at the sight before them.
Sakura moved her arm from the other side of her body to cup Sasuke's face, attempting to smile through her tears. In that moment, the chaos of the battle scene and the presence of the surrounding ninjas seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in their own world.
"That's all I can do," the medical ninja sniffled, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay," Sakura replied without averting her gaze from Sasuke.
"It's okay, you can leave us. I want to spend my last minutes alone with my wife, please," Sasuke said, his focus unwavering.
Without uttering a single word, the two ninjas who had been overseeing their plight dispersed, respecting the dying man's final wish.
Sasuke's whispered words hung heavy in the air, his voice trembling with a mixture of love and pain. "Sakura... I love you."
Sakura's heart shattered, and another round of sobs wracked her body. "I... I love you too," she managed to utter between her uncontrollable tears.
A choked sob escaped Sasuke's throat. "Loving you... made me who I am today," he struggled to say, his voice breaking under the weight of his emotions. "Through all the darkness, there was a light, and it was you..."
Sakura's cries grew louder, her pain echoing through every word. "I want to be with you longer, Sasuke! I want more time with you!" Her grip on his hand tightened, as if trying to hold onto their love against the cruel fate that threatened to tear them apart.
Desperation filled Sasuke's eyes as he pleaded with her. "Sakura... please don't let me go," his voice trembled, teetering on the edge of desperation and despair.
Determination etched into every line of her face, Sakura shook her head, her resolve unyielding. "I won't, dear. I promise I won't," she whispered with unwavering determination, willing herself to be the strength he needed.
With a fierce determination burning in her heart, Sakura moved her hand from Sasuke's face to the gaping abdominal wound on Sasuke, causing her own pained cries to fill the air. The agony etched across her face, yet she refused to let go.
"What are you doing, Sakura?" Sasuke cried out in a frenzy, his voice laced with fear and anguish at the sounds of her suffering.
The words escaped her lips through gritted teeth, her voice strained with pain. "I've loved you for as long as I have known you," she winced, tears mixing with the sweat on her face. "I'm not going to spend a single second without you." She intensified the pressure on the wound, sacrificing her own well-being in a desperate attempt to save him.
"Please... Sakura, stop," he pleaded, tears streaming relentlessly down his face, his voice a plea filled with heartache and desperation.
Meeting his tear-filled gaze, Sakura summoned every ounce of her fading strength. "We deserved a happier ending, my dear," she strained, her neck arched as she drew closer to him, pressing her lips gently against his. When she pulled away, her eyes closed, surrendering to the finality of their shared destiny.
"Sakura!... Sakura! Stay with me... please!" Sasuke's voice echoed with anguish and desperation, his heart shattering as her blinking slowed, and her grip on his hand weakened.
A serene smile graced Sakura's face, despite the pain and fatigue overtaking her. "I love you, Sasuke..." she trailed off, her voice barely a whisper, as if carried away by the wind.
"No, please... Sakura," he cried out, his voice torn between a plea and a wail of despair. He was fated to witness the loss of all those he cherished, and now, as the tears streamed uncontrollably down his face, he realized that Sakura had left him before his own time.
"Sakura..I love you..." His hand tightened around hers, his final act of devotion.
Hand in hand, the two lovers succumbed to the battle's aftermath. Their final words hung in the air, a testament to their unwavering love for each other. When the medical ninjas returned to give the fallen shinobi a proper burial, upon witnessing the heart-wrenching scene, they knew there was no separating them.
Side by side, they would find eternal rest. In death as in life, they belonged together.

I'm not actually sure if you're a sasusaku fan (what are your thoughts on them btw?) but if you are, do you have any fics you could recommend? Sorry if this is a bother!
hey!! omg you're not bothering me, i can literally talk about naruto all day every day i'm so serious.
short answer, yes i do ship sasusaku, but not necessarily what we got in canon. i think genin!sasusaku was really fucking cute (idk what the antis say, the foundations were THERE) but they kinda lost me in shippuden? i still stand by them tho idc & no one can deny that the sasusaku fandom is super fucking talented. anyways, here are some fic recommendations!!
MY FAAAAVE SASUSAKU FICS
synergy by bttrmllw ─ this is a mulan-inspired AU & is quite possibly the best sasusaku fic i’ve ever read (& honestly, i would argue that it makes my top 10 naruto fics in general). the romance is well written, but what i love most about this fic is that it incorporates the konoha 12, kakashi being a competent sensei (canon!kakashi pls forgive me ily), sakura’s relationship with tsunade, & the uchiha brothers... so basically, all my favorite things. if you haven’t read this fic, i HIGHLY recommend it.
the long way home by the general girl ─ also more of an AU (or i guess you could argue canon divergent?) but i really like the progression of sakura & sasuke’s relationship!
a twist in time by wolf08 ─ for all my time travel lovers!! genin!sasusaku is simply superior idk what to tell you. also, because it’s a time travel fic, sakura’s been trained under tsunade before traveling back to her genin days… and idk about y’all but i absolutely love fics of genin!sakura kicking ass.
sticks, stones, and summer by bttrmllw ─ i just really love any fic where the naruto characters interact as children. this is more of an AU but it’s a cute little one-shot that made me smile.
i’ll misbehave (if it turns you on) by theformerone ─ this is one of the funniest naruto fics i’ve ever read & the author absolutely kills sasuke’s inner monologue.
stars exploding by blesseth ─ this is more of a pre-relationship fic but i love the depiction of sweet, post war sasuke!
the time being by CatFlorist ─ i’m ngl, i don’t remember this one too well since it’s been a while since i’ve read it, but i do remember really loving the plot. this one also kind of deals with time travel, but not necessarily in the way you would expect? idk i highly recommend!
interim by stannide ─ this is one of the few fics on the list that’s actually set in the time between sasuke & naruto’s final fight and sasuke leaving the village at the end of shippuden. i like how the author fills in the spaces of what we missed in canon & develops sasusaku’s relationship.
