"We want more complex female characters-" Y'ALL COULDN'T EVEN HANDLE HER

It's always "No I don't hate A@ng or Ma! I just want to criticize how their characters were handled", and never "They're fictional and you're offended on the behalf of literal nothing".
Ps: Zks say what you gotta say to avoid harassment. I don't hate them either. It's just absurd that hating a fictional character that doesn't exist is something to be denounced in order to be taken seriously.

one example of atla fans’ media illiteracy is that they don’t understand the past avatars’ advice was written in a way that’s so vague that aang literally does everything they told him to do.
i see so many takes being like aang just ignored his past lives or even yangchen would’ve blah blah and i’m like. how did you miss the point that badly???
so i’m gonna point out all the ways the writers wrote around what the previous avatars said so that aang actually does what they all advised:
starting with the most obvious point: none of them actually tell him to end ozai.
kyoshi: “only justice will bring peace.”
aang? takes away ozai’s bending so the fool rots in a prison cell for the rest of his life.
the world? at peace.
kuruk: “aang, you must actively shape your own destiny and the destiny of the world.”
aang? makes his own choice against what everyone tells him to do and literally ends a war that was going on for centuries.
the world? destiny changed!
yangchen (because for some reason you all don’t get this one and it’s just never been clearer to me lmao): “selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs, and do whatever it takes to protect the world.”
so let’s point out some key words:
selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs, and do whatever it takes to protect the world.
and let’s go back to aang taking ozai’s bending away, but before that, when he says this right before even meeting the lion turtle.
aang: “I guess I don't have a choice, Momo. I have to kill the Fire Lord.” - Selfless duty
see even just like you guys, aang didn’t catch the signs, but that’s okay! cuz shortly after this the lion turtle starts to move and makes itself known to aang, and reward him for sticking to his faith.
now, let’s look at what the lion turtle was actually saying and how this aligns with yangchen’s advice:
lion turtle: “To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable or you will be corrupted and destroyed.” - is the willingness to Sacrifice his literal Spirit sinking in yet??
if not, here’s what was actually happening while he said that:
[As he speaks, Ozai's energy begins to make its way to Aang's body, consuming the blue and replacing it with red energy. Cut to a view above Aang looking down at his face as the energy reaches his face and continues to cover the beams shining out his mouth and eyes. Cut to a side-view as the red light begins to take control and the blue light diminishes. Cut to close-up of Aang as the red energy has taken over almost completely with just one eye left...]
WHATEVER IT TAKES?? literally? like hello
i feel like because this is a kid’s show and that it was obviously gonna have a happy ending, that people take for granted what aang did and what he was willing to do.
he put his literal spirit on the line to end the war, and this was after he was running trying to spare ozai for an hour.
and then you say you wanted him to end him. and sure yeah, let’s pretend that doesn’t go against the whole show and would’ve ruined his entire arc for a seeeecond, how exactly is that supposed to be more satisfying or end any differently to what we got? aang would’ve still been hit with the rock ex machina. ozai would be dead sure but the climax would be a lot less visually appealing, and everyone in the world would STILL be at peace except for…. oh right. AANG.

Katara could be written to say that she thinks fighting is for guys in lok and the stans will find some way to defend it…
Edit: someone thought that this actually happened when I was just making an assumption going by how atla and lok stans defend every character decision the writers made for katara. Like how she doesn’t need to fight because she’s old, how it’s ok that she’s reduced into a healer and that her only character now being the avatar’s girlfriend is alright with them.

I hope you get raped and murder you deserve it. One less zutard to worry about.
Oh hey just so you know, it should be “murdered” rather than “murder” in context to be consistent with the tense.
Also, that first sentence is a run-on. There should either be a period or a semicolon between “I hope you get raped and murder[ed]” and “you deserve it” because both are independent clauses.
Maybe you should invest in Grammarly or something. Then maybe you’ll be capable of writing a threat I won’t just laugh at.

Not planning on watching the ATLA live action but it's sad and annoying how they had to make Azula's abuse too on the nose for people to understand that she was also a victim of her father, and people are STILL ignoring it and calling her crazy. There is no winning for poor azula

really telling how every other chucklefuck who talks about atla won't shut up about katara needing to apologize for what she said in the southern raiders, but no one ever even suggests that aang should apologize for crumpling up and hiding hakoda's letter and mocking and belittling southern water tribe culture, nor does anyone say sokka should apologize for years of misogyny directed at his own little sister who HE ADMITS looked after him after their mom died. funny how that works.

"I love change but the original did a thing this way to serve this purpose and so the thing being now different due to it serving a different purpose is bad and a sign TPTB don't know what they're doing!"
Starting to think maybe you don't actually love change, fam.

I'm so tired of how people defend Maiko and Mai because their main critics are Zutara shippers. I'm not a Zutara shipper, never was, but I agree with most of their criticism on how canon handled romance, and it is so frustrating to see people dismiss their valid points just because of what they ship. An argument in favor or against something should hold up by itself, it can't be negated just because of who makes it. That's using the strawman fallacy, a well-known fallacy that you'd think people wouldn't have any difficulty discerning, and yet here we are.
Mai is given a free pass on her horrible treatment of Zuko's feelings just because she's badass, she's unhappy with her life, and because of that one quote that doesn't make sense when taking into account how she's been portrayed up till that point.
Maiko is given a free pass because of that last kiss, because some people thought that Zuko would benefit from her negativity based on some scenes that were meant to deliver the contrary message, and because the show says so. But since ATLA is held as this perfect show with no flaws, anything the narrative presents as good has to be good, and whoever criticizes it is just salty, right?
And the same happens with criticisms of kataang and aang, where this one character and relationship are held as peak goodness just because the narrative goes out of its way to frame them that way, instead of acknowledging their flaws and working on them, which would be a much more interesting exploration of these characters and dynamics.
Of course, Zutara shippers are going to be the most critical of how the narrative treats their favorite characters and forces them into relationships that only benefit the other half. They care about Zuko and Katara, and disliking an aspect of the show makes them much more critical of how those aspects were implemented than a fan who would be blinded to its flaws. I don't even agree with all their opinions, I feel like some takes do a disservice to the characters, but I wouldn't discredit their thoughts just because of their ship, and I'm so tired of blind fans doing just that, and invalidating not only Zutarians but anyone who disagrees with the notion of ATLA being peak fiction.

The ATLA fandom is interesting. There's been uproar about Katara's personality changing in the live-action... Besties, don't you think there's a reason why they did that? Maybe due to a certain influx of people bashing Katara every time she breathed in 2020? She was shamed repeatedly for being angry, outspoken, and confrontational. Not to mention how many of you defended her being a docile healer instead of a fighter in LOK (hell, some of you preferred Katara in LOK over Katara in ATLA, don't think I forgot). Why are we backtracking now?
(Yes the live-action could have done better with her. But they were probably trying to appease the people who whined in 2020, which they shouldn't have since this fandom would find something to rage about no matter what)
Istg, Renaissance fans and their performative activism. Again I say, the ATLA Renaissance sucked

Sometimes I hear Zutarians say something along the lines of "it's not that deep, I just think they look cute together. Leave me alone" in response to harassment from Kataangers. Which is completely fine, say what you gotta say to be left alone. But for some of us it is that deep.
Some of us are genuinely passionate about analyzing the narrative cohesion of Zutara. Some of us genuinely felt wronged when it didn't happen. We deserve to be left alone as well. Because even if you disagree, or think our opinion is shit, everyone are entitled to their own opinion and deserve to be treated with respect. Why do I need to say this.

is it so difficult to recognize colorism in a tv show without conflating dark skin with indigeneity? a light skinned actress being casted in a dark skinned role is the issue, not whether or not the actress is indigenous. this is casey camp-horinek (gran-gran) we’re talking about here.

i hate how huge the atla problem has with villianizing borwn and queer ppl that ship zutara— its a serious problem thats been going on for years and when ever someone speaks out we’re labeled as dramatic and attention seeking. it’s draining and it sucks how these issues are always dwindled down to ‘ship wars’ instead of racism and bigotry
