वसंतकल्याणी "She who is Auspicious as the Spring"
Rajakumari Vasanthakalyani is the eldest daughter of Maharaja Chitra Varma and Mahishi Rajarajeshwari. Being the eldest princess of the Empire, she is well-versed in administration, scientific disciplines, poetry, arts and religious texts. Her name was chosen by her paternal grandmother who loved the spring season. The tradition of the Imperial family was that the eldest child, most specifically the son, of the Emperor and the Empress would rule over the Empire. But as the Empress has not given birth to a prince, Vasanthakalyani was crowned the princess from the age of 17. But most of the rulers of the kingdoms are against a women being the sole ruler. She now has taken the challenge of proving them wrong.
" Please don't worry about me, Father
It is past the time that they see a woman in power.
A ruler's strength comes from their citizens but
My strength comes from you, mom and my dear siblings!

Ponniyin Selvan X Bahubali Crossover.
Vandiyathevan woke up with a jerk. A slight noise had alerted him. "It must be those pindaris, to hell with them" he cursed as he pulled out his sword from its sheath and slipped out of bed. He waited for a while for any other sounds when he heard it. "Nanba?"
Arase? At this hour? He sneaked upto the window where he heard Aditha from and threw it open.
Aditha jumped onto the sill he was hanging from and into the room as vandiyathevan quickly shut the window behind him. "My lord vanthiya, took you a great deal of time to hear me."
"Arase, why did you have to slip in through- are the pindaris waging a war?!" Aditha shaked his head in denial waving his hand as he caught for breath.
He was interrupted by a knock on the door. Aditha sleekly slid under the bed before vandiyathevan could comprehend what was happening. He trotted towards the door still hazy at being subjected to so much so early into the day. He opened the door to see Devasena, who quickly barged into the room and shut the doors behind herself.
"Where's Aditha?" She sternly asked him, and before he could act clueless he saw Aditha slip out from under the bed and stand upto his full stature.
Vandiyathevan stepped back from infront of Aditha. Why was the Arase here at this hour? And why was Yuvarani here? Rather how had she come to know?
"Aditha are you out of your mind?" Devasena shrieked yet whispering every syllable.
"I mean-" Aditha said smirking at her making her throw a pillow at him. "You saw me from your anthapuram? Was I so loud?"
"You were pretty loud, I'm surprised our soldiers weren't alerted. All the training sessions, constant boar hunts, nothing can teach them to be alert. And then the pindaris attack and we lose a thousand of them. I can't-"
"Devasena...." Aditha said getting closer trying to calm her down. And Devasena got the cue. She exhaled relaxing her shoulders, looked back at Aditha trying hard to smile. "How are you? It's been a while."
"I'm very well!" Said Aditha grinning, "I've also heard that you've been doing really really well." Devasena scrunched her nose trying to figure out what Aditha was speaking about and her eyes widened when she realised. She glared back at vandiyathevan. He shook his head grinning. And then he saw her smile. He knew what the yuvarani was about to bring up. "Mhm, then I guess you would also know how vandiyathevan was doing."
"Ohhhhh Rightt. I completely forgot." Aditha said smiling at vandiyathevan bewildering him further. He quickly tried to change the topic.
"Arase you could've very well brought your troop and yourself through the main gates with a great degree of pomp. Why did you have to sneak in through-"
"Trust me Nanba my ego would've loved that, but entering the kingdom at this hour? That too unannounced? It wouldn't seem right. But I needed to talk to you after the message you'd sent me! So Parthiba and the rest stayed back in the tents at the outskirts of Kuntala. A post might reach the kingdom authorities in an hour or two about my arrival and then I can enter back with the rest of them tommorow morning."
So much, just to know about the yuvarani's love interest a few hours earlier. But again, this was Aditha. And the yuvarani in concern here was Devasena. Devasena had fallen for someone. And that had clearly gotten Aditha excited enough to ride down to Kuntala in a matter of less than nine hours. The poor horses.
For the next few hours, the three sat in Vandiyathevan's chambers speaking about everything they had piled up in their heads. Devasena spoke about the last boar hunt they went on which ultimately led to shivudu, making her fluster and the other two giggle. And just to make things light on Devasena, Aditha asked Vandiyathevan about how his spying mission was going on, which he himself led to Kundavai even though his nanba very evidently tried to avoid it. Both Devasena and Vandiyathevan knew better, than to bring up Nandhini, so they remained mum.
The sky had slowly begun to turn a lighter shade of blue, when both Aditha and Devasena realised it was time they sneaked back.
"Try not to get caught." Devasena told Aditha before opening the chamber doors. "I'll try. But you're soldiers are a little too good." Devasena tried to respond assuming Aditha was mocking her kingdom's army. "No seriously" Aditha responded "Your general found me sneaking in. But then he let me proceed after recognising me." Devasena sighed
"Devasena you're doing just fine, so is your army. Just.......just calm down. You're good. You're really really good. I'll see you in a few hours with my soldiers." He waved and smiled at Vandiyathevan before jumping out of the window.
"Get some sleep" Devasena said before leaving. "With Aditha here, today will be one long day, I can promise you that."

Maatrutva (2)
The Soldiers and all the servants bowed as the regal looking man walked hastily into the anthapuram. His best friend and advisor, who was also his brother-in-law matched his steps side by side beside him and the duo made haste towards a certain chamber.
Raja Raja Chozhan was discussing about Political Matters with his Thozha Vallavarayan Vandiyathevan, when a maid barged in and cried about how his Queen Panchavan Madeviyaar had collapsed near Ponni in the arms of Udaya Pirattiyar. The world seen to zone out as his mind was filled with constant thoughts, his mind reliving his whole life with her till now.
"Thambi!" He heard his elder sister's cry as she ran towards him with his wife Abhimaanavalli in tow. He had recently wed Abhimaanavalli, and the said girl was mingling nicely with family because of the friendly nature everyone had, except she was taking a place in heart of Kundhavai more because of her bubbly nature.
"Akka! Valli! What is it I hear? What happened to my Panchama? Is she fine? Is she hurt anywhere?" He bombared his Akka with questions, reminding her of the time he had got so worked up when he found out that Vanathi fainted because of dehydration as she was doing Nirjala Vratham.
"The Vaidhyar is here Thambi, he is checking Panchama. Vaa, let's see." Kundhavai said and the brother-sister duo rushed inside the private area of Panchamadevi's chambers. Where no one except Royal Family members was allowed without permission.
Thiripuvana Madeviyaar and Loka Madeviyaar sat beside a lying Panchama, the former softly running her palm at her sister-wife's head. Panchama laid unconscious, unknown to the upturn of emotions and chaos she caused.
"Swami! Panchama!" Lokamadevi hastily moved behind a little, making a place for Raja Rajan to sit, his hand immediately getting hold of Panchama's jewelled palm.
"Vaidhyar, what is it? What happened to the Queen?" He asked restlessly, Lokamadevi's palm resting on his shoulder to ease his restlesness.
The Vaidhyar smiled. "Arasae! Looks like Sakthi Amman finally heard the plea of Rani. Congratulations Arase, for your Queen Panchamadevi is going to be a Mother. Yes Arasae, the Queen is pregnant."
Abhimaanavalli squealed in delight, hugging Kundhavai excitedly. She had known very well that Panchamadevi was the only Queen of Raja Rajan who was barren, and she prayed to Durgai Amman to fill her life with more and more happiness.
Which Durgai Amman did.
Thiripuvana Madeviyaar cried happy tears, arms wounding her shoulder from back as she turned to see her other sister-wife Cholamadevi smiling tearfully at her. "Swami, my heart teared up when she cried and pleaded Maa Jagadambika for a child in her barren garden. Finally, Amma heard her plea." She said crying happily.
"Urgh..." Panchama groaned, taking all the attention on herself as she tried sitting up. The Vaidhyar bowed and took his leave, leaving the family bask in happiness. "Akka," Panchama turned to Thiripuvana Madeviyaar. "Did I faint again?" She asked hoarsely, and turned her head to see her beloved husband looking at her with tearful but happy eyes. "Swami? Why are there tears in your eyes?" She asked hastily and he caressed her forehead gently.
"Panchama, here, have this water first. We can talk later." He said and made her drink water. "Now tell me, did I faint?" She asked gulping the rest of water.
"Panchama, you did, and it's a good news." Loka Madeviyaar smiled, wiping the tear that fell from her eye. "What is it Akka? What did that Vaidhyar said? What happened to me?" Panchama asked, Raja Rajan immediately holding her palm.
"Panchama, Kanne, you are going to be a mother. Yes, the Vaidhyar confirmed that you are pregnant!" Thiripuvana Madeviyaar told her and Panchama's eyes widened.
"What- but- how..?" Panchama was too flabbergasted. At first, the Vaidhyar broke her heart by saying she was barren, what happened now? Could it be the miracle of all the penance??
As of reading her thoughts Thiripuvana Madeviyaar nodded. "Yes Kanne, your harsh penance finally was fruitful." She said kissed Panchama's forehead.
"Akka! I am going to tell about this to the Kids. They will be so excited!" Abhimaanavalli said with a happy clap.
"Valli, you seem more happy than her." Raja Rajan teased his newly wed wife with an amused glance, her turning bashful at the comment. "Arasare, how can I not? I have been praying to Durgaiyamman for Akka's happiness ever since I set foot in Thanjai as your Rani. Finally, Akka is graced with the beauty of Motherhood." Abhimaanavalli replied, her voice not holding any sort of resentment but pure love and devotion of her Akka and sister-wife.
Which was one of the best traits he liked in her, thus he took her as his wife rather than her sister.
"Vanathi, Sakti, Abhimaana, why don't we all leave and tell others?" Kundhavai, who was silently celebrating Panchama's pregnancy and thanking Uma Maheshwara again anf again suggested and the other three Queens of Raja Rajan immediately nodded, shuffling out eith Vandiyadevan in tow.
"Panchama..." Raja Rajan kissed her forehead. "You made me the happieat person on the earth." He said tearfully kissing her forehead, Panchama's own eyes tearing up at the news. "You don't know how much I suffered while you cried to sleep for not being able to give me a child. How much I prayed Shiva to fulfill all your wishes. See, he did." He said and Panchama burst into tears followed by him.
"Swami, the love of Madhuranthakan, Araiyan, Kundavai and Mathevadhigal overpowered the sadness of me being barren. I am so happy that they will finally have amother playmate. Madhu and Araiyan will finally get one more sword fighter or Kundavai and Mathevadhigal will get a doll to dress up." Panchama sniffed with a happy smile.
Raja Rajan laughed. "What did you think of names?" He asked suddenly.
Panchama was in thoughts. Then out of nowhere, a small smile bloomed at her face. "Adithya Varman— if boy and if girl, we will think." She said and gauged his reaction, which contorted into a pained look and then a smile. He didn't said anything but hugged her.
Months later, Panchamadevi gave birth to a very healthy boy, and he was named after the elder brother of Raja Rajan, Adithya Karikalan.

6- SHOORPANAKHA
Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Anuradhapuram
The welcome accorded to the Pandya envoy was as grand as usual. Honestly, they weren't expecting such a marvelous welcome due to their downfall. Ravidasan was worried about Udayan breaking the protocol to greet and hug him. What will the crown prince and his advisors think?
They all looked very impressed and the only thing Jatilan was a bit miffed about was the king refusing to show him the ancient crown jewels of Pandyas. Jatilan's great-grandfather Maravarman Rajasimhan had entrusted them to his counterpart in Anuradhapuram before he fled to Chera mandalam and no one has seen them since then.
Though he too really wanted to see the renowned crown jewels, Ravidasan consoled the young prince that such loyalty is commendable. Perhaps they even thought that this is Veera Pandyan's secret test. By refusing to show the crown jewels to anyone except the Thennavan himself, they have passed the test in flying colours. If Kotravai wills it, Jatilan himself might get to wear the necklace of Devendran when he marries Uma Maheshwari or ascends the throne wearing the ancient studded crown!!!
Lankans were very receptive to the plan to fight Cholas when they are already engaged in another war. He talked to the Chief Commander when the Prince and his advisors conducted discussions with the royals. An intuition told him that they were already making preparations for this and their arrival was highly anticipated. The Commander tasked a General with explaining their plans and Udayan joined them.
It was Udayan who revealed what really conspired behind the scenes. The splendour of Paranthakan's youngest grandson's beauty has reached the anthapuram of Anuradhapuram. His cousin, the King's daughter Hemalata declared that she accepted him in her heart and she will fast untill death if he their marriage isn't conducted soon. The king was overjoyed since he saw it as an end to his endless troubles. Needless to say, Cholas refused to entertain this proposal.
Though he told himself that these people aren't as trustworthy as their demonstrations indicated, Ravidasan was really moved by this one-sided love story. "Poor princess! It is a pity that she loved a man enough to die for him though he doesn't care that she exists."
"Hi hi hi. Your sense of humour is intact, anne. Now no one is more determined than our Hema to destroy the clan and reign of Cholas. We will get her married to Jatilavarmar in a heartbeat if his father allows it."
"Really! I thought the princess is older than him."
"She is, but who cares about such trivial matters when a lot is at stake? My uncle, I mean the king, is not going to embarrass himself again. But in case your advisors get such ideas, which is definitely going to happen after today's meeting, you should encourage it."
He was reminded of the words of his teachers: "A passionate woman, like a female snake, terrible from the condensed poison she accumulates within, will never, if injured, neglect to wreak vengeance."* Do they really need such a treacherous and toxic alliance? If Jatilan's sisters were unmarried, at least one of them could have been married to Udayan, Senan or little Mahindan. But who is he to make such decisions? It is indeed a good thing that he joined aabathudaivigal and became a brahmachari. He won't have to deal with such women.
°°°°°°
"Jatila, Jatila, kumaraya", Hemalata caressed the prince's forehead and hair as her attendants sprinkled water on his face. Ravidasan felt chills as he saw the princess who looked like bhadrakali. Isn't this the same girl who declared that Sundara Cholan is dearer to her than her own life? Who can guess what transpires in the deep recesses of women's minds!
Jatilan slowly opened his eyes, jumped up from the bed and stood up, seeing all the women surrounding him. Ugravikraman and Ravidasan caught him before he fainted again due to strain. The prince had been unwell since he got on the ship. Though they thought that this is normal sea-sickness, his continued bouts of fainting and shortness of breath were alarming. The royal physicians of Anuradhapuram too couldn't find anything wrong with the young prince's health, except fatigue.
Ugran asked their translator to convey to the ladies to leave them alone. Jatilan peered through the slits of his eyes and started giggling as the girls left the room. They heaved a sigh of relief. Poor Ugran's thoughts have gone from jumping into the sea to slitting his own throat in an instant when he saw Jatilan lying still.
"Ilavarase, are you alright? Please don't laugh and over-exert yourself".
"I am alright. Anna, please don't tell Uma that this Shoorpanakha akka touched my hair."
"Someone is going to be very displeased if she knows that she was called akka and Shoorpanakha".
"What will they do if Sundaresan deposited all the beauty in the world on Paranthakan's one grandson? He should have divided it and given a bit to all of us."
They stopped Jatilan from talking further and massaged his feet. Who knows whether they will emerge as Raman or Ravanan from this ordeal!

She who is the Goddess to the King of Kings"
Mahadevi Rajarajeshwari is the chief wife of Maharaja Chitra Varma and the Empress of the Empire. She is the sister of the King of Dwijawanthi. She is the mother of Rajakumari Vasanthakalyani and Rajakumari Vegavahini. Rajakumara Rama Varma is also her son. She got married to Maharaja Chitra Varma, who was the crown prince back then. Rajarajeshwari prefers to spend time by cooking delicacies that are a fusion of different regional varieties. She also is an ardent devotee of Goddess Durga.
"So, Brother you are telling me that you married me off to the King,
is not because I loved him but I was a mere pawn in your game?
Well, since it was your actions that made me the Empress,
let me show you the power that comes with it!"

Ponniyin Selvan X Bahubali Crossover
It had been more than an hour since Devasena had sneaked back to her anthapuram, and all though she'd forcefully shut her eyes several times in an attempt to doze off she could only think about him. And the one time she was successful, she dreamt about Shivudu and woke up frantically. In an hour her maids would come by to wake her up. She wasn't going to get any sleep tonight.
Devasena felt love-sick, but what was supposed to be a joyful queer feeling, made her feel ill.
Kuntala was a very small kingdom, which was surrounded by enemy troops and also infested by them from within. Several of her own ministers would jump at the opportunity to rip apart the kingdom for their benefits. Yet she and her brother had held it together, through wars, through alliances, through compromises. It was clear that when Devasena would marry, it would be for a political alliance. That's how her parents had been married, and after them her brother. If despite the alliance, by the grace of Kanna even a small feeling of love blossomed between her and her husband, she would be grateful, she had convinced herself. After all, she was dedicating her life to her kingdom.
But now Devasena had decided to fall in love. And she'd convinced herself time and time again, that it would never be possible. She was a princess, and he was just......Shivudu. She remembered very well how the rulers of Thanjavur, a well established kingdom had reacted to Aditha falling in love with Nandhini. Her ministry in a kingdom like Kuntala too would react no less subtly, if they came to know about her feelings for him.
"The princess of kuntala has been swept off her feet by a common man." No. She wasn't going to prioritise a man over the kingdom she loved so much more. Her kingdom. Her motherland.

"Uyir ungaldayathu devi....uyir....ungal-"
Vandiyathevan had repeated to himself a million times in the past hour. Vandiyathevan had fallen for women, so many of them. But never in love. Never the way he had fallen for Kundavai. And as much as it made his heart flutter, he also tried to keep a check on it.
"This can't possibly work out." He'd tell himself every two minutes. A princess of such superior lineage as the chozhas would never get married to a mere soldier from the vallava clan. The uproar it would have if the kingdom came to know.
Vandiyathevan too was a soldier, one of the most trusted in Aditha's battalion. The one who'd galloped from kingdom to kingdom, spying and escaping. He knew just as well as Aditha did, nobody could perform a mission as well as he could. His pursuit had always been to showcase his skills as a warrior and to win back the land of the vallavas one day. Marriage, children, family; these were never things Vandiyathevan was meant for. Or so had he thought. For how long could one live and work for material pursuits. Afterall Aditha had himself set him up with Kundavai.
He could see the light illuminating the silhouettes of the palace walls. The sun had painted the sky in an ombre pallete. Vandiyathevan decided to postpone his internal argument. He'd talk to Semba about it on his ride back to Thanjavur, maybe he could help.
He slipped out of bed, and went in to take a shower. By the time he had finished and changed into a new set of clothes, he could hear the faint clatter of metal. He walked out of his chamber to see the yuvarani practicing her swordsmanship in the courtyard. Devasena dueled with precision, constantly shifting her weight from one leg onto the other. The commander in chief of Kuntala, Manohar, himself had faltered his steps at times, but Devasena had continued to wield in an invincible pattern.
Vandiyathevan watched in awe as his eyes wandered around to a figure. Ah, Shivudu it was! But unlike a lovesick fool, he was looking at the yuvarani with pride, in a composed demeanor. Something so ironically shady about the man. "Where have I seen this man?" Vandiyathevan muttered to himself. In a moment he saw Shivudu smirk slightly and before he could wonder the reason behind it, he heard the clang of metal on the stone floor. The commander in chief had lost grip on his sword and been forced to surrender, lying on the floor. Devasena smiled and retreated while Manohar stood back up with smile plastered on his face. "You're the best warrior in the kingdom yuvarani, must you still keep at it so hard?" He asked her as she gulped down a tumbler of water.
"Yes Manohar, after all there are warriors from other kingdoms much well trained than I am, take Vallavarayan Vandiyathevan from Aditha's battalion." Devasena said looking up at Vandiyathevan who stood infront of his chambers with a smirk.
"Good morning to you too Yuvarani. Although it would be a horrible comparison to compare your swordsmanship to mine." Said Vandiyathevan, trotting down the stairs towards the courtyard. "But spying, you see that I might excel at."
Devasena laughed along with Manohar. "True that."
.
.
.
Devasena and Vandiyathevan sat down for breakfast after she had freshened up. The palace had recieved Aditha's letter. The king and the queen had left the kingdom early to talk to the civillians and listen to their plights, so they could be back before Karikalan arrived, leaving just Devasena and Vandiyathevan at the table.
"Yuvarani if you don't mind may I ask you s-"
"Vallava please don't be so formal. And first please drop the yuvarani when you address me."
Vandiyathevan smiled uncomfortably.
"How have you not been given the position of the Commander in chief? It was evident in the duel that Manohar was sweating against your wielding."
Devasena's expression turned stern, something Vandiyathevan hadn't witnessed
"A woman is never appointed official roles on the battle field."
Vandiyathevan winced. He was not new to this. He knew very well about the practice. But while admiring Devasena's war craft, he had forgotten the discrimination of women on a battlefield. He had forgotten for a moment that a woman with the same if not greater proficiency than a man would still be sidelined in a war. He looked up at her, the guilt running through his veins.
"The very fact that I was even allowed on the battlefield had raised strong opposition. But this is my motherland, and if I'm given the freedom to live on it I must also be given the freedom to fight for it."
"Must you not be given the freedom to lead your people in a war then?" Vandiyathevan knew he was walking on egg shells.
"A great warrior such as you, fighting along with the other soldiers-?" He silenced himself, his eyes still looking at Devasena pitifully.
Devasena smiled slightly, her eyes tender
"On the battlefield, a soldier and a commander are both warriors nonetheless. A warrior stays true to the pledge. To dedicate our lives to the kingdom, to fight until our last breath. And an appointed role won't change that."
Vandiyathevan knew that it was unfair, that Devasena was forced to subdue herself only because she was a woman and felt that she should've fought for the position she deserved.
Yet he knew that Devasena had faced her own backlashes, and wherever she was, she had her reasons. What was expected of him during a battle was something she was reprimanded for performing.
So as a reply, Vandiyathevan subtly nodded and continued to eat his breakfast, while Devasena ate her's.
"Aditha will be here in sometime." Devasena said trying to break the silence.
Vandiyathevan looked up, when he heard the blow of the horns.
Devasena and Vandiyathevan both looked towards the bastions. "Looks like someone's early" Vandiyathevan said chuckling.
"Man won't even let us eat in peace." Sighed Devasena dramatically, leading the two to crack up.

Flood Of Emotions
"My Akka is disappointed in you."
Vanathi was sitting at the thick railing of the gazebo in anthapuram, after everyone departed for the sleep. The full moon danced along with the stars with all his glory, its cool rays bathing over her beautiful skin draped in a dark yellow dress. All jewellery discarded, Vanathi had left a few necessary jewellery on hr body while her Alta painted palm played with the water.
"Why?"
"For your ridiculous vow." He replies with a frown.
"How is it ridiculous? I don't want the throne of Chola Samrajyam, I never had." She said matter-of-factly.
"But she wishes to see you beside me as Queen." Vanathi lowered her head at this sentence. "I won't become Queen of someone who doesn't want me to be their Queen. And even if such a situation occurs, I won't be their Queen." She says and adds, "Also, as I told Akka in your presence, it doesn't matter to you what I do or How I am."
Her cold words felt like ice at his skin. "It does matter Vanathi! You are just being unfair." He says. "How?" She asked.
"Who said I don't care? You are my Akka's uyir Thozhi."
"Yes!" Vanathi suddenly hopped off the railing. "I am just your sister's closest friend. How does it matter to you then? I am just her friend." She said.
Stupefied at the sudden movement of Vanathi, he recollected himself. "Did you not call me Yaanai Paagan?" He asked and Vanathi immediately turned red with embarrassment.
"I-- I apologize for that Ilavarasae, I didn't knew you were the Prince of this glorious dynasty. Please forgive my atrocity." Vanathi said.
"No no, that's not the problem. But why did you changed after that?"
"Don't you, don't you hate me?"
Confused, he said, "No, why would I? I have no reason to hate you."
"What? Then why did you acted as if I never existed at Nandhi Mandapam?" Vanathi said and immediately looked down realising she sort of accused him. "I am sorry."
"It's okay. Its your right to ask questions." He said and added. "Also, I was just teasing you."
"Then tell me." Her demanding voice took him by surprise. "Why did you do that? And then out of nowhere you cameand swooped me like a hero when you were still weak! Why?" She said.
"Di you want me to let you die?"
"Illai. I mean why did you save me when you were still weak? Do you want to die on my accord?" Her heart skipped a beat.
Wondering where she had been hiding this side of hers, he replied, "I wouldn't have died Vanathi, I knew I will survive. I was scared you would die. What would happens if the jewelled lamp of Kodumbalur Clan extinguishes?" He said softly and this sentence made her tear up.
"That would have been better. I was born with the curse of misfortune, I think. Please, I beseech you, do not think I wish to gain sympathy by saying thus, I am merely stating truth." Vanathi said.
"Why do you say so Vanathi?" Arulmozhi was surprised. "You are the very fortune of Chola Kula along with my Akka. How can you be a curse of misfortune?" He asked. Vanathi looked up and his breath stuck up in her throat upon seeing her eyes rimmed with tears.
"My father died soon after I was born, went to heaven upon dying a noble death in Eezham. My mother couldn't handle the grief and left me all alone. I dropped the Valakku Pattu when you were leaving, and you got caught in a deadly disease. How can I not be Ayya?" She said in a tearful tone.
"I survived because the light you had lit didn't extinguish when you dropped the plate. Ups and Downs are a part of life, Vanathi." He said. "As for your parents, your father did attain veera gathi, though that isn't much of a comfort." He said and Vanathi looked away, speechless. "Why are you here Ayya?" She asked trying to change the topic.
"To talk about your vow."
"What about that?"
"It had made Akka very disappointed, and I can't bear to see her thus." He said.
"Akka can find more suitable Princesses for you." Every word pierced like needles in the heart of Vanathi as she said those words, unknown that other side had same effect too. "And I am very much not going to break my vow, even if you marry me. Also, I can't bear anymore accusations on my back and especially at my face." Her words turned bitter remembering Samudhrakumari.
"What accusations" His eyes narrowed.
"That I want to sit on the throne of this glorious dynasty and be your Pattamagishi."
"And you don't?" He purposely asked.
"No, I don't even love you." Her words felt like someone just ripped his chest apart with sharpest of swords. "Is that so?" His voice came out quite, and hurt. "Then you won't mind?" He asked.
"What I won't mind?" She asked.
"If I marry someone other than you?"
Her heart almost stopped beating at the mention of his marriage to someone else. Those words felt like hot molten lead in ears. Unknown to her, he also felt same when she uttered those words. Her eyes burned as she turned away from him, her tears silently slipping out. Unknowingly sobbing hardly in she said, "Of course! Why should I?"
"You have, after all, been talking about me and Samudhrakumari as often as you can." He said trying to comfort her, but those words worked like kerosene on fire. She whirled around, her eyes red with anger and sadness and tears. "why won't I? After all, she managed to win your heart!" Her voice rose.
And he was unable to stop himself from smiling.
"But she did not! It is true that I did and still possibly do have affections for her, but affections do not mean winning my heart." He said softly.
"But I do not own the affections I meant you had for Samudhrakumari. You too think I want the throne." Vanathi said.
"Vanathi.. I was wrong, I wasn't sure about it. But the things I was told..." Arulmozhi looked away.
"You ever asked me whom I loved? I don't love you, I love my Yaanai Paaga, who came on a huge elephant just to save little chicks." Vanathi wept softly and Arulmozhi felt his heart crumble at her tears.
"The Yaanai Paagan and I are not different, Vanathi.." Arulmozhi said and acting upon his instincts, moved closer to her.
"No," Vanathi said. "My Yaanai Paaga felt the same, I don't think the Prince does." said she.
"Your Yaanai Paagan still feels the same.." He said and wiped her flowing tears. "But the Prince can be idiot sometimes." Vanathi laughed softly at that. "If you feel same then why you never confronted me Ilavarasae?"
He frowned. "When I was supposed to Vanathi? When I heard you were the Kodumbalur Ilavarasi, I couldn't but hear the words everyone was speaking. Akka also adored you even back then, and praised you all the time, even when you weren't there. And when I tried to find you, you were never there. Akka just said you had a timid nature." He said. "Why didn't you came to meet me, when everyone else wanted to?"
"I was afraid..."
"Why?"
"I-- I called you Yaanai Paaga."
"I was glad you did call me so. I knew then you had no idea who I was. And for someone who has always been known as Prince, it was refreshing." He smiled fondly, remembering it.
"Then, you don't dislike me?"
"I never disliked you." A charming smile appeared on his face, and Vanathi burst into tears. He pulled her in his embrace, and she cried hard on his shoulder.
"I love you so much Ilavarsae!! I don't care what my Periyappa thinks. He may want to see me on the throne of Thanjai beside you but all I care about is a elephant right by your side." Vanathi cried, sobbing hardly in end.
Her pure confession brings him to tears and he tightens his hold. "I hav been in love with you since we met, I think. But I never allowed myself to feel."
"I felt like dying when I heard about your drowning, after seeing you alive and safe I cried out of joy, knowing that you won't be hearing it."
"The world would have lost light if something happened to you." He inhaled the sweet scent of her hair.
"And I would have lost my life to be with you by jumping in River Ponni, if something had happened to you." She replied.
"Vanathi..." He shivered at that, his tears finally escaping. "Don't say that." She wipes his tears and says, "Don't cry. No one can harm you until I am standing in Yama's way. He should take me before you."
"Don't say that Ilavarasi." He clamped his palm over her lips.
"Ayya, you must marry someone before me. Or else my vow will be broken." She said.
"I won't." He replied stubbornly.
"I can't be your Pattamagishi Yaanai Paaga."
"You can't be my Pattathu Arasi but you can still be the head of my family. And I will not give that position or that of standing on my left to anyone else." He declared. "I would forsake the throne rather than you."
"How can you say that Ayya? After your illustrious Thamaiyan, it's you who should take the responsibility." Vanathi gasped.
"Vanathi, Anna is the Crown Prince. I would rather be free from the burden of the throne. And I have no necessity to take more than one wife." His words made Vanathi's heart flutter.
"You don't know how happy I feel now. I can finally have you for myself, and can sit beside you on elephant." She smiled leaning her head on his chest.
"So you just want the Elephant ride, is that it?" He asked teasingly making her look at him innocently. "Of course, what else?" Laughing loudly at her innocent reply, he embraced her again and the two lovers bathed themselves under the Full moon.
