Growing up I lived in an area with a lot of cattle farming and I was very scared of the cows. Do you have any cool facts that will make me either more or less afraid of cows?
oh hmm let me think on that!
facts related to how to interact with cows so all parties feel and stay safe:
they have a very prey herd animal mentality. they want to move with their herdmates. they want to watch any potential threats like people and move away from them. they don't like loud or unfamiliar noises (they're sensitive souls. sometimes if i visit a dairy wearing waterproof coveralls where the cows are only used to people wearing cotton coveralls, just the whisper of waterproof pants rubbing against each other can spook them) or abrupt movements or going into areas they can't see well (and they have difficulty with depth perception due to their wide-set eyes for 300 degree vision, and with high-contrast, so going from sun into shade or vice versa can look like stepping into a white or black void for them and they don't like it)
based on this, we know the keys to low-stress cattle handling are consistency in how you interact with them, calmness (small movements, quiet words to let them know you're there), moving cows in groups big enough to have friends but small enough you can control the whole group without them milling around or the ones in front stopping and causing a traffic jam, and slowly moving them by just barely getting in their "bubble" of "whoa, you're a little too close for comfort, i'm going to move in the other direction" without ever getting into their "YIKES RUN AWAY FROM THIS THING" bubble
the last point involves understanding pressure and flight zones and point of balance:
from Mississippi State University Extension:
Tumblr media
from grandin.com (highly recommend as a source of information about animal behaviour and welfare!!! temple grandin my idol since i was like nine i love her so. and i tear up when i think about how much she's done for millions of animals ;_; she's a genius and no lie revolutionized low-stress handling):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pet cows that get doted on enough to bond with people may not see people as a threat so the normal ways we use pressure zones to iinteract with cows don't necessarily do anything for them. you would lead them more like a horse, using a halter. or lure them with treats.
beef cows typically have little contact with people, often just processing (vaccines, preg checks, quick exam for any health problems) a couple times a year, so they can be very wild. doesn't mean they're aggressive, the overwhelming majority are non-aggressive but they have very large flight zones, so if you don't recognize that and approach too quickly, getting deep in their flight zone, that can get you into a dangerous situation where they get aggressive as a last resort. that said, they do usually still choose flight unless their calf is with them. "never get between mom and baby" applies as it does with any species
dairy cows are in between beef cows and pet cows. they interact with people regularly, several times per day, and it's respectful but not doting. kind of a business relationship with their handlers. they're not terrified of people by any means, but they haven't been, like, hand-fed treats to get over their instinctive wariness of potential-predator-like animals, and they know sometimes handling results in unpleasant experiences like medical treatment or pregnancy checks, so they avoid touch and have a flight zone, though it's small (and sometimes they'll calmly let you walk right up to them unrestrained, or approach you and lick you out of curiosity). very very rare to have an aggressive dairy cow (as in, one that attacks you instead of moving away when you're bothering them a little. really bothering them and ignoring body language when they can't move away is much more likely to get you kicked)
bulls are not docile. not every bull will be aggressive, but you should assume that every bull has the capacity to become aggressive with little provocation, and always keep a respectful distance and know your escape route if you have to be in a pen or field with them
cows love exploring with their tongues. any time you're in a dairy barn there's gonna be at least one friendly girl mlem mlem mlemming who won't leave you alone
adding on to the above, there is a slight caveat that you still have to be a LITTLE wary of friendly cows. 99% of the time they're just friendly but sometimes cows in heat will try to mount people. you don't have to be scared of friendly cows but if they're right next to you just keep them in your line of sight so you can move away if they make like they're going to mount. again, not common, never happened to me, but something to be aware of
signs of a happy, relaxed cow: lying down, chewing cud or eating, tail hanging down relaxed, moving slowly with her herd
signs of a slightly wary cow (you have entered the "pressure zone"): standing still/stopping what she's doing, turning towards you, ears turning towards you (watching the ears is a very good way of knowing what she's paying attention to), tail swishing or raised a bit away from body
signs of a distressed cow: vocalizing (they also moo for other reasons though), tail swishing, fidgeting/pawing/looking like she wants to move but doesn't know where to, freezing up and intermittently making erratic movements (back away a little)
signs of an aggressive cow: head down with attention on you, pawing ground, turning to show you their broad side. (turn sideways and calmly but swiftly walk away diagonally)

Nearly 4,000 kilometers east of uninhabited D’Arcy, residents of another island find themselves caught in that dilemma. On Staten Island, New York City’s “forgotten borough,” white-tailed deer overrun neighborhoods and city streets and provide a vector for Lyme disease. Vehicle collisions with deer are common, costly, and deadly. While there is broad agreement that the ballooning deer population causes problems, what to do about it has long been such a flashpoint that the media often calls it the “Deer Wars.” Reporters construct narratives that pit whitetails against people, people against people, and deer against the environment. On one side of the divide are those portrayed as hands-off “animal lovers” who want to let nature take its course; on the other are those who would prefer to see the “rats with hooves” sleep with the fishes.
While debate raged, consequences multiplied. According to Cliff Hagen, president of the local conservation group Protectors of Pine Oak Woods, the island probably hadn’t had a viable deer population for centuries because of farming, development, and overhunting. But as policies designed to recover deer populations succeeded on the mainland, deer started to arrive on Staten Island in the 1990s where they proceeded to proliferate and “decimate” what was left of the native flora, including endangered Nantucket juneberry and locally rare Torrey’s mountain mint. At the same time, the deer encouraged the spread of invasive plants such as stilt grass, garlic mustard, and mile-a-minute, a fast-growing vine native to India and East Asia. These invasives change the chemical composition of the soil and prevent native plants from growing back. Clay Pit Ponds State Park, a 103-hectare nature preserve encompassing wetlands, ponds, sand barrens, spring-fed streams, and woodlands, is now carpeted with invasive grasses because of these changes, says Hagen. “Many of the trees are still there. But once those trees fall, there are few, if any, saplings growing. So the future of the forest does not look good.”
For Hagen, any discussion about protecting wildlife must also consider the health of the ecosystem upon which wildlife depends. On top of that, wherever elected officials and wildlife managers face an overabundance of deer, they must also weigh varied and often competing values and perspectives, such as public safety and the expectations of hunters, animal rights activists, landowners, commuters, and residents of urban and rural communities—not to mention the lives of deer and other affected native species. Then, decision-makers face the unenviable task of choosing an ethical, practical, and affordable way forward.
One of the most ecologically sound approaches, depending on the available habitat, is to reintroduce or support the recovery of native predator populations. But where that’s practically or politically impossible, the options on the table are traditional hunting, culling by sharpshooters, and fertility control. In a 2020 paper, Texas A&M University environmental ethicist Clare Palmer and coauthors suggest that the last of these might be best “in terms of deer welfare,” but “in terms of naturalness, lethal control may have the edge,” because it’s similar to predation. Limited resources might also tip the scales toward lethal control, because it’s cheaper and logistically simpler. But, Palmer and the others write, “there is no simple or single answer as to what constitutes ‘ethical management.’”
One thing is clear: it’s unethical to do nothing. “If you’re worried about ecosystems,” Palmer says, “it seems like that’s a reason to reduce the deer population. If you’re worried about human welfare, given the ways we live, it seems like that’s a reason to reduce the deer population. If you’re worried about animal welfare, it seems like that’s a reason to reduce the deer population.”
“Traditionally, conservation and preservation has been all about not intervening,” she concludes. But with the additional pressures of climate change, “interventionist conservation seems much more pressing.”

Is tap water contamination? Where do these unsubstantiated rumors originate?
What is Gryphosate herbicide you might ask? Glyphosate (ingredient name "glyphosate isopropylamine salt") is a herbicide used for agriculture and gardening all over the world including Japan. It is absorbed by the greens of the stem and leaf before moving towards the root and then withers the entire plant. グリホサート Since it's classified as a "non-selective" herbicide every plant dies when the herbicide is applied on the leaf surface. Pesticide companies usually sell glyphosate-based herbicides after the patent period has expired. The herbicides that contain glyphosate have been verified and tested. One of the characteristics of glyphosate is "safety" that is very low in the degree of toxicity to animals through a mechanism which blocks the activity of the enzymes found in plants (not found in animals). When the chemical solution is applied to the soil, it becomes a food source for microorganisms. They can distinguish the solution into carbon, water, and oxygen. It is a recognized pesticide worldwide that reduces greenhouse gas emissions because it allows farming without tillage. Glyphosate is a component of tap water. https://kotobank.jp/word/グリホサート-486290 Tap water is safe Is glyphosate present with tap water? Weekly Shincho reported that in April 2020, there would have no standard amount of the chemical glyphosate in water that is filtered. It would only be the value that is targeted. This value is higher than other pesticides and nations as well as drinking water contaminated. In an article, I said the presence of. This has led people to believe that tap water might contain high levels of glyphosate. This is not true. First, glyphosate doesn't have a specific value, but only an acceptable goal value. This is due to the fact that glyphosate for 10 minutes at 2 ppm is the draft water quality standard value. This is because a level greater than 0.2ppm (1) has never been observed in the tap water. In reality, in an examination conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan, there were no instances of glyphosate being detected in tap water in Japan with a concentration exceeding 0.02 ppm. グリホサート It is impossible to identify it. In addition, the soil metabolizes the glyphosate in a manner of halving in two days. グリホサート Therefore, it will be transferred into waterways and the tap at the same concentration and will not cause any harm to the environment. Japanese tapwater is safe The tap water that is used in Japan is safe. It is safe to consume tap water as it is. There are 51 strict inspection items, and they are provided based on strict quality control stipulated by the law. Water can be divided into three categories: acid, neutral and alkaline. Japan has a water quality standard that ensures the water that is pumped into your tap has a neutral pH (5.8 or higher and 8.6 lower). You can still drink iron rust if the water pipes in your home have been damaged. How is tap water produced in the first beginning? Tap water is primarily made by consuming water sources like dam lakes and rivers. After removing impurities through precipitation and filtering, the water is sterilized by water purification facilities. The tap water is transported to all households via water pipes. Story about Japanese pesticide residue standard value The current glyphosate residue standard for wheat in Japan 5 ppm. グリホサート It was 5ppm up to December 2017. Concerning this, there are various opinions like "We have increased the limit to 30ppm by six times and feared health harm." Tap water glyphosate The standard residual value of glyphosate is the same as the international standard. https://axel.as-1.co.jp/asone/g/NC64-5169-17/ However, the truth of the issue is that we actually adjusted the standard to match the global standard's residual value, not loosening it. Japan imports huge amounts of wheat from South America and the United States. The importer, also known as the overseas producer, naturally controls the use of glyphosate to the international standard of 30ppm. However, Japan's 5ppm standard amount will trigger all imports to stop when it exceeds the standard. The supply of wheat may be affected and Japanese food items could be at risk. The standard value is being revised to conform to the standards of international quality. グリホサート The safety issue remains even though the standards are in use. グリホサート グリホサート You need to have a good understanding of the glyphosate To prevent consumers from being too easily influenced by emotional debates concerning pesticides' residues, it's important to acquire the correct knowledge based on scientific research conducted by experts. It is crucial to be happy with your diet and avoid getting distracted by the rumors.

Are tap water sources polluted? Where do these unsubstantiated rumors originate?
What is Glyphosate herbicide? Glyphosate (ingredient known as "glyphosate Iopropylamine sal") is an herbicide used for farming and gardening across the world, including Japan. It is absorbed into the leaves and stems, then migrates to the roots and causes the plant to wither. All plants die after the herbicide has been applied to the leaves. Many pesticide companies sell herbicides that contain glyphosate since the patent period for the ingredients has expired. All herbicides containing glyphosate on the market have been thoroughly tested and are therefore reliable. One of the advantages of glyphosate (glyphosate) is its "safety". This chemical is extremely non-toxic to animals and inhibits the enzyme activity in plants. Additionally, when the chemical solution comes into contact with soil it becomes a food for microorganisms, and it is separated into carbon dioxide, water and so on., so it is also distinguished by the fact that it does not contain herbicide components are left. It is a recognized pesticide throughout the world and aids in the reduction of greenhouse gases since it permits no-tillage agriculture. Glyphosate found in tap water Tap water is secure Is glyphosate mixed with tap water? Weekly Shincho stated in April 2020 that "In Japan, there's no standard value left for glyphosate found in the tap water. It's just the target value." The value is higher that other pesticides and nations as well as drinking water contaminated. グリホサート I have written an article stating that there is. There are concerns that the high levels of glyphosate could remain in water from the tap. However, this isn't the case. The first thing to note is that glyphosate DOES NOT have a target or standard value. This is due to a concentration greater than 0.2ppm (1) has never been detected within the tap water. In reality, in an examination conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare There are no instances of glyphosate being detected in water from taps in Japan with a concentration exceeding 0.02 ppm. It is impossible to determine it. グリホサート Furthermore, the glyphosate spray actually slows down the soil's metabolism and is degraded in as little as two days. The same amount is then transfered to tap water and rivers, and won't be affected by pollution. Japanese tapwater is secure Tap water from Japan is considered to be safe. Tap water is safe if it is bottled as is. There are 51 strictly inspected items, and they are supplied on the basis of strict quality controls imposed by the law. Water is classified as "acidic", "neutral" and "alkaline" according to the pH difference but the tap water of Japan is defined by the standard for water quality to ensure that the pH is close to neutral (5.8 or more and 8.6 or less). However, if the water supply pipes that are in or around your home are damaged, there's still the chance of drinking iron corrosion. How is tap water created? Tap water is mostly made from water that is surface like dam lakes or water from rivers. After eliminating impurities via precipitation and filtering the water is then sterilized in water purification plants. Each household receives the tap water through its pipes. Story of Japanese standard value for residues of pesticides The glyphosate residual value for wheat is 5 ppm in Japan. But, it was 5 to 5 ppm from December 2017. Regarding this, there are various opinions that say "We reduced it to 30ppm by 6 times and feared health harm." Glyphosate is a component of tap water. The glyphosate residual value is the exact same value as the international one. But the fact of the problem is that we did adjust the standard in accordance with the international standard's residual standard value, not loosening it. Japan imports large quantities of wheat from South America and the United States. The importer, or overseas producer, controls the use of the glyphosate at 30ppm. But Japan's standard for glyphosate will be 5ppm. グリホサート https://www.nagoya-u.ac.jp/researchinfo/result/2022/04/post-241.html This means that all imports of the substance will be restricted. If this happens, the supply of wheat will be restricted and Japanese food production could be endangered. We therefore modified the standard value in order to conform to the international standard. Also, safety is not an issue in the current standards. A good understanding of Glyphosate is vital. To ensure that consumers are not affected emotionally by pesticide residues discussions, it is important that you have the correct knowledge. Experts have conducted scientific research. It is also important not to let gossip detract from your healthy lifestyle. グリホサート 論文

Are tap water sources contaminated by herbicides containing glyphosate? Where do the unfounded reports originate?
What is a glyphosate-based herbicide? And what is its purpose? Glyphosate (ingredient known as "glyphosate Iopropylamine Sal") is an herbicide used for farming and gardening across the globe, including Japan. Glyphosate gets absorbed from the green parts of plants, like stems and leaves. Once sprayed the agent is transferred to the root, and then withers the entire. The plants die when the herbicide is applied to the leaves. Pesticide companies often sell glyphosate-based herbicides after the patent has expired. All glyphosate herbicides that are on the markets have been examined by a rigorous inspector. Glyphosate is a product with one of its distinctive features it's security. It is because of an underlying mechanism that blocks the activity of enzymes in plants (not found in animals) and is extremely low in toxicity to animals. If the chemical solution is sprayed on the soil, it can be a source of food for microorganisms. They can differentiate the solution into carbon, water and oxygen. Since it permits cultivation without tillage, it is recognized as a pesticide that helps reduce greenhouse emissions of greenhouse gases. Glyphosate in tapwater Tap water is safe to drink. Does glyphosate mix with tap water? Weekly Shincho stated that there was no set value for glyphosate in the tap water of Japan. Only ラウンドアップ . Furthermore, ラウンドアップ is more than other pesticides, as well as other countries and the water is contaminated with pesticides. In an article, I stated the presence of. There are ラウンドアップ that tap water may contain high levels of glyphosate. However, this is not the case. The first thing to note is that glyphosate DOES NOT have a target or standard value. Tap water has never been found to have an amount of more than 0.2ppm (1). According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Japan has not seen any instances of glyphosate being detected within tap water. In reality, there is no risk of it being detected. The glyphosate spraying in soil is actually degraded in half only two days. The same concentration can be transferred to tap water and rivers and it will not pollute. Japanese tap water is secure Tap water from Japan is considered to be safe. Tap water is safe to drink in the current form. There are 51 requirements for inspection, and the water supply is subject to strict quality control. ラウンドアップ can be classified as "acidic", neutral, or alkaline depending on its pH. However the tap water that is used in Japan must have a pH of near neutral (between 5.8 and 8.6). https://www.dtomarmaris.org/glyphosatewhy-farmers-choose-to-grow-organically-using-glyphosate-to-ensure-we-will-have-food-for-the-foreseeable-future/ can still drink iron corrosion if the pipes that surround your house are damaged. How does tap water get produced? Tap water is made primarily from water sources , such as dam lakes and rivers. After purifying the water then adding chlorine to make it more sterile. The tap water created in the purification plant is pumped to each home. The story of Japanese pesticide residue standard value Japan's glyphosate standard value for wheat is now 5ppm. However, it was 5ppm prior to December 2017. There are many opinions about this. Some say "We loosened 30ppm by six times, and resented any health damage." Glyphosate in tap water The glyphosate residual standard value is the same as that of the international standard. The truth is that the standard was not changed, but rather changed to reflect the residual value of the international standard. Japan imports huge quantities of wheat from South America and the United States. The importer, also known as the overseas producer controls the use of glyphosate in accordance with the international standard of 30ppm. If the standard amount for Japan is 5ppm, then it will go over the standard value and all imports will be banned. If this occurs, the production of wheat could be impacted and Japanese food production could be endangered. To ensure that we meet international standards, we have changed the standards for these values. The current standards do not pose any safety issues. Do you need to understand the concept of glyphosate? ラウンドアップ is important to have the right knowledge, based on expert scientific research, so that customers aren't influenced by their feelings about pesticide residues. You should also be able to enjoy your food without being distracted be distracted by gossip.

Is tap water contamination? Where do these unsubstantiated stories come from?
What exactly is an "glyphosate" herbicide? Glyphosate (ingredient known as "glyphosate iopropylamine sal") is an herbicide that is used in farming and gardening in all parts of the globe which includes Japan. Glyphosate is absorbed from green partslike leaves and stems. After being sprayed, the agent migrates to the root, and then withers the whole. The plants die when the herbicide is applied to the leaves. The herbicides based on glyphosate are typically sold by pesticide manufacturers due to the fact that the patent period for their ingredients has expired. https://www.mhlw.go.jp/file/05-Shingikai-11121000-Iyakushokuhinkyoku-Soumuka/0000168500.pdf The herbicides that contain glyphosate have been tested and reliable. One of the characteristics of glyphosate is "safety", which is extremely low in the degree of toxicity to animals by a mechanism that blocks the activity of enzymes present in plants (not present in animals). The chemical solution that is sprayed becomes food for microorganisms once it comes in contact with the soil. It then is separated into carbon dioxide and water. This makes it unique since it does not contain herbicide substances. Since it permits cultivation without tillage and is regarded as a pesticide that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Glyphosate in tapwater Tap water is secure What effect does the glyphosate in the water supply? Weekly Shincho stated that there was no standard value for glyphosate in Japan's tap water. Only the target value. Furthermore it is more than other pesticides as well as other countries, as well as drinking water that is contaminated with pesticides. I have written an article in which I stated that there is. This has raised questions about high concentrations of glyphosate may remain in tap water. But this is incorrect. First, glyphosate does NOT have a standard or target value. The reason is that tap water has never seen glyphosate concentrations exceeding 0.2ppm (which is 1). According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, no case of glyphosate with a concentration of more than 0.02ppm was found in Japan tap water. There is absolutely no chance of being discovered. グリホサート Additionally, the soil decays the glyphosate at a rate that is halving over two days. This means that it will be absorbed into the water supply and tap water at the same time and will not be a source of pollution. Japanese tap water is secure Tap water from Japan can be trusted as safe. Tap water is safe to drink in the current form. グリホサート 安全 There are 51 rigorous inspection items, and they are supplied on the basis of strict quality control stipulated by law. Water can be classified as "acidic" neutral, or alkaline, based upon its pH. However tap water in Japan is required to be near neutral (between 5.8 and 8.6). If the water supply to your home's pipes are corrosion-prone, iron rust could still be a possibility. What is the process of producing tapwater in the first place? Tap water is produced primarily from water sources such as dam lakes and rivers. After removing impurities through precipitation and filtration the water is then sterilized in water purification plants. Every household gets water from the tap through its pipes. A story about the Japanese standard values for pesticide residues The current glyphosate residue standard for wheat in Japan, 5 ppm. It was 5ppm up to December 2017. There are a variety of opinions on this matter, including "We reduced the limit to 30ppm six times and regretted the health effects." Glyphosate in tap water The residual standard value of glyphosate is the same as the standard used in international law. The truth is that we didn't reduce the standard. We modified it to match the international residual standard. Japan imports large quantities wheat from South America. The importer (the foreign producer) regulates the amount of glyphosate utilized at the standard of international standards (30ppm). The Japanese standard is 5ppm. Imports that go over the standard will be penalized. グリホサート This will lead to a reduction in the supply of wheat and may cause Japanese food products being at risk. In order to comply with international standards the value of standardization was updated. グリホサート The safety issue remains even though the standard values are current. A good knowledge of Glyphosate is crucial. To prevent consumers from being influenced by emotional conversations about pesticide residues, it is essential to collect the right information based upon scientific research carried out by experts. It is also essential to avoid letting gossip distract you from your healthy lifestyle.

Frustration as Biden, Congress allow eviction ban to expire (AP) Anger and frustration mounted in Congress as a nationwide eviction moratorium expired at midnight Saturday—one Democratic lawmaker even camping outside the Capitol in protest as millions of Americans faced being forced from their homes. Lawmakers said they were blindsided by President Joe Biden’s inaction as the deadline neared. More than 3.6 million Americans are at risk of eviction, some in a matter of days. The moratorium was put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as part of the COVID-19 crisis when jobs shifted and many workers lost income. The eviction ban was intended to prevent further virus spread by people put out on the streets and into shelters. Congress approved nearly $47 billion in federal housing aid to the states during the pandemic, but it has been slow to make it into the hands of renters and landlords owed payments.
Breakneck pace of crises keeps National Guard away from home (AP) In the searing 108-degree heat, far from his Louisiana health care business, Army Col. Scott Desormeaux and his soldiers are on a dusty base near Syria’s northern border, helping Syrian rebel forces battle Islamic State militants. It’s tough duty for the soldiers. But their deployment to the Middle East last November is just a small part of the blistering pace of missions that members of the Louisiana National Guard and America’s other citizen-soldiers have faced in the past 18 months. Beyond overseas deployments, Guard members have been called in to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters and protests against racial injustice. For many, it’s meant months away from their civilian jobs and scarce times with families. While Guard leaders say troops are upbeat, they worry about exhaustion setting in and wonder how much longer U.S. businesses can do without their long-absent workers. “This past year was an extraordinary one for the National Guard,” said Gen. Dan Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau. Does he worry about exhaustion setting in? “That’s something I’ve been very concerned with right from the start.”
Western Wildfires May Take Weeks To Months To Contain (NPR) Pockets of the American West continued to burn over the weekend, as another nine large fires were reported on Saturday in California, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. The 87 fires still active in 13 states have consumed more than 1.7 million acres. Just shy of 3 million acres have been scorched since the start of 2021, with months left in what experts predict will be a devastating fire season. In southern Oregon, the Bootleg Fire has become the largest active blaze in the country. The 413,000-acre inferno was contained at 56%, as of Saturday night. A fire line has been constructed around the entire perimeter, ranging from 100 to 150-feet wide between the burn and unburned areas.
Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect (AP) Thanks to a reworked menu and long hours, Jeannie Kim managed to keep her San Francisco restaurant alive during the coronavirus pandemic. That makes it all the more frustrating that she fears her breakfast-focused diner could be ruined within months by new rules that could make one of her top menu items—bacon—hard to get in California. “Our number one seller is bacon, eggs and hash browns,” said Kim, who for 15 years has run SAMS American Eatery on the city’s busy Market Street. “It could be devastating for us.” At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa. Animal welfare organizations for years have been pushing for more humane treatment of farm animals but the California rules could be a rare case of consumers clearly paying a price for their beliefs.
Why are so many migrants coming to one of Europe’s smallest countries? Blame Belarus, officials say. (Washington Post) Europe’s newest migration crisis is unfolding in one of its most unlikely places. Lithuania, a Baltic nation roughly the size of West Virginia with fewer than 3 million residents, hasn’t been known as a destination for undocumented immigrants: Each year, the country sees roughly 70 people unlawfully cross its border with Belarus. In July, the number skyrocketed to more than 2,600, consisting mostly of immigrants from Iraq and sub-Saharan Africa. Officials expect the numbers to grow in the coming weeks. This new flow of people did not begin organically, Lithuanian and European Union officials say. Instead, they say, it is the result of an audacious plan by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to weaponize migration in response to E.U. sanctions. In June, Lukashenko threatened to allow human traffickers and drug smugglers to stream into Europe. E.U. officials say they have evidence that his government is also encouraging immigrants to travel there: coordinating with a Belarusian travel agency to offer tourist visas, setting up flights and then transporting people from Minsk to the Lithuanian border. Lithuania, which has virtually no experience with large numbers of immigrants, has scrambled to construct a barbed wire fence along the border.
Thousands protest against COVID-19 health pass in France (Reuters) Thousands of people protested in Paris and other French cities on Saturday against a mandatory coronavirus health pass for entry to a wide array of public venues, introduced by the government as it battles a fourth wave of infections. It was the third weekend in a row that people opposed to President Emmanuel Macron’s new COVID-19 measures have taken to the streets, an unusual show of determination at a time of year when many people are focused on taking their summer break. The number of demonstrators has grown steadily since the start of the protests, echoing the “yellow vest” movement, that started in late 2018 against fuel taxes and the cost of living. An interior ministry official said 204,090 had demonstrated across France, including 14,250 in Paris alone. This is about 40,000 more than last week.
Turkey evacuates panicked tourists by boat from wildfires (AP) Panicked tourists in Turkey hurried to the seashore to wait for rescue boats Saturday after being told to evacuate some hotels in the Aegean Sea resort of Bodrum due to the dangers posed by nearby wildfires, Turkish media reported. Coast guard units led the operation and authorities asked private boats and yachts to assist in evacuation efforts from the sea as new wildfires erupted. A video showed plumes of smoke and fire enveloping a hill close to the seashore. The death toll from wildfires raging in Turkey’s Mediterranean towns rose to six Saturday after two forest workers were killed, the country’s health minister said. Fires across Turkey since Wednesday have burned down forests and some settlements, encroaching on villages and tourist destinations and forcing people to evacuate. In one video of the Bodrum fire filmed from the sea, a man helping with the evacuations was stunned at the speed of the fire, saying “this is unbelievable, just unbelievable. How did this fire come (here) this fast in 5 minutes?”
Afghans flee (NYT) A mass exodus is unfolding across Afghanistan as the Taliban press on with a military campaign and the U.S. withdraws. At least 30,000 Afghans are leaving each week and many more have been displaced. The Taliban have captured more than half the country’s 400-odd districts, according to some assessments, sparking fears of a harsh return to extremist rule or a civil war. The sudden flight is an early sign of a looming refugee crisis, aid agencies warn.
As the Taliban closes in, Afghan forces scramble to defend prisons holding thousands of militants (Washington Post) Huddled in brightly lit yards late one recent night, hundreds of inmates taunted a team of about a dozen special forces who were rounding the walls along the top of Kunduz prison. The appearance of elite soldiers was an anomaly, a sign to the prisoners that something was happening. “What’s going on?” they shouted. “Is tonight going to be our last night in here? Taliban fighters planned to storm the compound that evening, according to information gathered by local intelligence officers. Government forces hoped the show of force would spur prisoners—some in possession of smuggled cellphones used to communicate with the Taliban—to wave off the attack. Without enough fighters to hold the city’s front lines and reinforce the prison, the special forces’ move was a gamble. But it appeared to work: The night passed without incident. As Taliban militants close in on Afghanistan’s provincial capitals, they are inching closer to central prisons that house around 5,000 of their fellow fighters, leaving the government scrambling to secure the detention facilities. If just a fraction of the detainees were to escape, Afghan security officials warn, it would hand the militants a significant advantage on the battlefield, where they are already making steady gains.
Burkina Faso sees more child soldiers as jihadi attacks rise (AP) Awoken by gunshots in the middle of the night, Fatima Amadou was shocked by what she saw among the attackers: children. Guns slung over their small frames, the children chanted “Allahu akbar,” as they surrounded her home in Solhan town in Burkina Faso’s Sahel region. Some were so young they couldn’t even pronounce the words, Arabic for “God is great,” said the 43-year-old mother. “When I saw the kids, what came to my mind was that (the adults) trained these kids to be assassins, and they came to kill my children,” Amadou told The Associated Press by phone from Sebba town, where she now lives. She and her family are among the lucky ones who survived the June attack, in which about 160 people were killed—the deadliest such assault since the once-peaceful West African nation was overrun by fighters linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State about five years ago. As that violence increases, so too does the recruitment of child soldiers. The number of children recruited by armed groups in Burkina Faso rose at least five-fold so far this year, according to information seen by the AP in an unpublished report by international aid and conflict experts.
Behind the Rise of U.S. Solar Power, a Mountain of Chinese Coal (WSJ) Solar panel installations are surging in the U.S. and Europe as Western countries seek to cut their reliance on fossil fuels. But the West faces a conundrum as it installs panels on small rooftops and in sprawling desert arrays: Most of them are produced with energy from carbon-dioxide-belching, coal-burning plants in China. Concerns are mounting in the U.S. and Europe that the solar industry’s reliance on Chinese coal will create a big increase in emissions in the coming years as manufacturers rapidly scale up production of solar panels to meet demand. That would make the solar industry one of the world’s most prolific polluters, analysts say.

How the Specter of Communism is Ruling Our World | Eps.2 | CCP | China |...
UNFORTUNATELY, SOCIALISM AND COMMUNISM WILL REMAIN  IN FORCE AND ALIVE IN OUR PLANET FOR A LONG TIME BECAUSE CORPORATE GREED AND INFLATION IS OUT OF CONTROL IN AMERICA AND THE FREE WORLD. STRUGGLING POOR PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD THINK THAT BY DESTROYING AND  REPLACING CAPITALISM THEIR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS WILL BE SOLVED BUT AS OF TODAY COMMUNISTS IN CUBA, KOREA, VIETNAM, RUSSIA, NICARAGUA, AND VENEZUELA REMAIN TRAPPED IN AN ECONOMIC STAGNATION AND NIGHTMARE. THE JEWISH COMMUNIST EXPERIMENT CREATED BY VLADIMIR LENIN (1917 - 1923) IN ORDER TO ABOLISH THE RUSSIAN MONARCHY HAS NOT SOLVED THEIR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS AND THE LEVEL OF POVERTY AND GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION REMAIN IN RUSSIA, CUBA, CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA IN ORDER TO CONTROL AND MANIPULATE THEIR RESPECTIVE GROWING POPULATION.
Former US Ambassador to Cuba, Earl T. Smith is interviewed and reveals the State Department's involvement in the violation of neutrality laws, supporting a known Communist with a documented history of violent criminal behavior, and committing high treason by deliberately aiding an enemy of the United States and concealing a clear and imminent threat to our national security. This conspiracy against the citizens of Cuba has cost thousands of lives, devastated families, and has left the dispossessed Cubans stateless and destitute. It is a deliberate case of economic and cultural genocide that merits investigation and restitution. He added "I am convinced that my experience as the United States Ambassador to Cuba was unusual in the sense that I lived through the Castro Communist Revolution, and I feel that I owe it to the American people to try to establish the fact that the Castro Communist Revolution need never have occurred. From this experience, I learned not only that our techniques of relations with Cuba were faulty but that the modus operandi for the determination of policy is not only inadequate but dangerous to the defense of our country"
SOCIALISTS, COMMUNISTS, AS WELL AS CAPITALISTS LEADERS HAVE CREATED ECONOMIC STAGNATION, UNEMPLOYMENT AND INFLATION AROUND THE WORLD IN ORDER TO CONTROL THE FLOW OF MIGRATION AS WELL AS CONSUMERS’ BUYING POWER AND AS A RESULT, AMERICA HAS BECOME THE ECONOMIC TARGET FOR PROSPERITY BUT NEW IMMIGRANTS COMING TO AMERICA DO NOT WANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT AMERICA'S CAPITALISM IS BROKEN WITH INFLATION, PERSONAL AND CORPORATE DEBTS, UNEMPLOYMENT, AND MORE  ILLEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION. ALL THESE ECONOMIC  AND SOCIAL OBSTACLES HAVE BEEN CREATED BY GOVERNMENTS ACROSS THE PLANET IN ORDER TO SLOW DOWN THE TOTAL GLOBAL POPULATION GROWTH BUT WE HUMAN TROGLODYTES KEEP  ON POPULATING THE PLANET AND REPRODUCING LIKE GUINEA PIGS. THE AMERICAN DEMOCRATS,  REPUBLICANS, AND  GREEDY CORPORATE AMERICA THINK THAT BY ASPHYXIATING AND STRANGULATING CONSUMERS WITH MORE INFLATED PRICES AND REDUCED WAGES THEY ARE GOING TO FIX THE ALREADY BROKEN, INFLATED AND DYSFUNCTIONAL US ECONOMY.
UNFORTUNATELY, SOCIALISM, COMMUNISM, AND TERRORISM WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE ERADICATED FROM THIS PLANET. THE DYSFUNCTIONAL GLOBAL ECONOMY CREATED AND MANIPULATED BY CAPITALISTS AND COMMUNISTS ALIKE IN  ORDER TO CREATE MORE REVENUE IN THE LAST 200 YEARS HAVE  BEEN BUILDING AND EXTRAPOLATING GLOBAL INFLATION PRESSURE IN ORDER TO CONTROL OVERPOPULATION ISSUES BUT HUMAN TROGLODYTES KEEP ON REPRODUCING AND SPREADING ALL OVER THE PLANET LIKE GUINEA PIGS AND WILD RATS.  KARL MARX SPOOKY SPIRIT STILL MEANDERING IN THIS PLANET AS WELL AS GREEDY CAPITALISTS WHO WILL CONTINUE FABRICATING LIES ABOUT THE GLOBAL ECONOMY STATUS AND USE INFLATION AS A BUSINESS TOOL TO KEEP ON INFLATING THE PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES IN ORDER TO GENERATE MORE REVENUE. NO WONDER SOME PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE MONEY TO PAY FOR SUPER INFLATED RENTALS AND CAN'T AFFORD HEALTH INSURANCE NOR OBAMACARE IN THE US.

“I am 35 years old. single, and working 3 jobs as I finish my doctoral degree.  I have done all of the things that they say you should do.  I have always worked hard. I have worked full time since I was 16.  I have spent my entire adult life getting an education.  It is the most frustrating thing in the world to know how different things were for my parents.  There is a major disconnect in America.   My parents' generation and older just don't understand that the country is a very different place economically.  The opportunities just aren't there.  To this day, I am still lectured by my parents for not having all that they had when they were my age.  I need to just work harder apparently.   To be honest, I find the future to be incredibly depressing if there is not a fundamental shift in the entire economic system of America.  The American Dream died decades ago.   Is there any reason to be optimistic anymore?  All we can do is hope for a political and economic revolution I guess.”
The discovery is that the vast bulk of recent job growth has gone to immigrants, including illegal immigrants who have little power to ask for raises. Specifically, since the start of the 2007 Great Recession “the US has added 2.3 million “foreign-born” workers”, but only 727,000 “native-born.” (This is according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ own survey.) IT'S TIME TO STOP BOTH LEGAL AND ILLEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION!!!! NO MORE DACA, DAPA, CUBAN MIGRATION ACT, NACARA, AND EXECUTIVE AMNESTIES!!
YES, THE PRESIDENT SHOULD BAN ILLEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION IN ALL STATES AND CUTDOWN LEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION BY 90%. WORK VISAS SHOULD BE CUTDOWN BY 95%.  GREEN CARDS APPLICATIONS SHOULD ALSO BE REJECTED DUE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND LOCAL OVERPOPULATION ISSUES.
TO CONCLUDE, IMPORTING GOODS INTO THE US TO HELP OTHER COUNTRIES ECONOMIES IS NOT WORKING, INCLUDING MEXICO. THEY ARE DUMPING A LOT OF EXPENSIVE JUNK, POOR QUALITY BEEF INTO AMERICA AND  ON TOP OF THAT THEY WANT OPEN BORDER 24, 7, 365 DAYS TO CLEAN UP THEIR COUNTRY OF UNEMPLOYED CRIMINALS, PROSTITUTES, PIMPS AND LAZY BUMS CREATED BY THEIR OWN SOCIALIST AND STAGNATED ECONOMY. IT IS TIME TO BAN  ILLEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION TO AMERICA AND CUT LEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION BY 90%.
YES, THE TIME WILL COME WHEN CIVILIZATION WILL NO LONGER BE PAYING ATTENTION TO SOCIALISTS NOR COMMUNISTS OUTCRIES BUT IN THE MEANTIME GREEDY CAPITALISTS WILL CONTINUE INFLATING THE PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES TO COPE WITH MORE PERSONAL AND CORPORATE DEBTS AND ULTIMATELY MORE REVENUE  AND ONLY THEN WE WILL EXPERIENCE OUR NEW AND IMPROVED UNIVERSAL RELIGION CALLED "ANARCHISM."  THE WORLD WILL BECOME SO OVERPOPULATED, FRAGMENTED, AND BROKEN THAT THE NEW GENERATION OF HUMAN TROGLODYTES WILL END UP LIKE IN CHARLTON HESTON MOVIE, SOYLENT GREEN. YES, LIVING IN AN OVERPOPULATED WORLD WITH NO LAND AVAILABLE FOR FARMING AND THE ENTIRE ANIMAL POPULATION DESTROYED OR CONSUMED BY HUMANS ACTING AS PLANET EARTH GODS. A SOCIALIST - ANARCHIST CRUEL WORLD. YES, WE WILL EAT EACH OTHER FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER WORSE THAN IN THE BIBLE STORIES. NO COWS, NO CHOCOLATE, NO MILK, NO MORE CREAMY ESPRESSO, NO MEAT, CONTROLLED WATER SUPPLY, A 4 OZ JAR OF STRAWBERRY JAM WILL COST $150.00 (IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY) BUT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO EAT SOYLENT GREEN CRACKERS MADE OUT OF PROCESSED HUMAN CADAVERS. AND FINALLY,  LIKE IN ALL SOCIALISTS AND COMMUNISTS COUNTRIES, THE SOYLENT GREEN CRACKERS WILL BE RATIONALIZED LIKE IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION AND OTHER COMMUNISTS COUNTRIES. AMEN!!!
ONLY TIME WILL TELL! THE ONLY THING THAT GOVERNMENTS WILL HAVE TO DO IS TO SLOW DOWN THE OVERPOPULATION PROBLEMS,  BAN ILLEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION AROUND THE PLANET AND CUT DOWN THE LEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION BUSINESS BY 90%.
BIRTH CONTROL, AS WELL AS POPULATION CONTROL, WILL ALSO BECOME A POLITICAL ISSUE IN THE U.S  WERE THOUSANDS OF LIBERATED WOMEN ARE USING SEX AS AN ECONOMIC TOOL TO OBTAIN LEGAL STATUS, WELFARE, AND FREE MONEY.  U.S AUTOMATIC BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP SHOULD BE BANNED ASAP IN ORDER TO HALT THE POPULATION GROWTH.
IT’S TIME TO SAY NO TO MORE FUNDS FOR ILLEGALS!!! USING FEDERAL TAX MONEY TO BRING IN MORE ILLEGALS IS ILLEGAL WHILE UNEMPLOYMENT AND WAGES DEPRECIATION FOR AMERICANS ARE UNDERMINING  THE LABOR AND WELFARE SYSTEM DESIGNED AND CREATED FOR US CITIZENS IN DISTRESS NOT ILLEGALS.
Make no mistake...this is all calculated, by design, to “collapse the system”. To overwhelm the border with utter chaos, and then come in and present “immigration reform” as the only solution.
It is classic Cloward-Piven, and it will only get worse unless the Congress, or Southwestern states, put a stop to it.
Time to stop the chain migration game into the US. No more DACA, NACARA, VISAS TO WORK, DREAMERS, DAPA, MATERNITY TOURISM, ILLEGALS, and THE CUBAN MIGRATION ACT because wages depreciation/stagnation and both Republicans and Democrats, as well as Corporate America, are Manipulating the laws to push out American Workers in order to create jobs for Illegals and new refugees. THE OBAMA'S ECONOMIC RECOVERY IS JUST AN ILLUSION. THE ONLY ECONOMIC RECOVERY FORECAST FOR THE FUTURE IS INFLATION, INFLATION, AND MORE INFLATED PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES IN ORDER TO GENERATE MORE REVENUE.
I DO NOT LIKE OBAMACARE NOR TRUMPCARE. YOU POLITICIANS CAN NOT  INCORPORATE ILLEGALS AND NEW POOR REFUGEES IN THIS INSURANCE PACKAGE. OBAMA-TRUMPCARE SHOULD BE FOR AMERICANS CITIZENS AND UNEMPLOYED US CITIZENS. FLORIDA AND THE US SHOULD STOP THE MASSIVE CHAIN MIGRATION GAME BECAUSE  ILLEGAL FEMALES WILL CONTINUE BRINGING THEIR BABIES TO OBTAIN FREE MEDICAID. I AM NOT GOING TO PAY FOR ANCHOR BABIES  HEALTH INSURANCE. THIS IS A GOOD TIME FOR YOU POLITICIANS TO  PUT AN END TO  ILLEGAL AND LEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION BECAUSE FLORIDA'S BUSINESSES ARE HIRING AND FIRING FLORIDIANS IN ORDER TO CREATE AN ILLUSION OF FRESH JOBS CREATION. OBAMA-TRUMPCARE IS A FEDERAL STICK UP DESIGNED BY  HEALTH INSURANCE UNDERWRITERS TO GENERATE MORE REVENUE. INFLATION, INFLATION, AND MORE INFLATED PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES IN THE NAME OF PROFITS.
CONSEQUENTLY, THE GRANDIOSE, ENIGMATIC AND UNIVERSAL QUESTION REMAINS IN FORCE. ARE WE, THE HUMAN TROGLODYTES SPECIMEN POPPETS OF GODS OR WE REALLY PRETENDING TO BE GODS’ OF PLANET EARTH BY EXTERMINATING THE ANIMAL KINGDOM AND FAUNA IN ORDER TO MAKE MORE MONEY IN REAL ESTATE?  IT’S TIME FOR AMERICA TO BAN ILLEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION, CUT LEGAL CHAIN MIGRATION  BY 90%, AND HALT THE ISSUING OF  GREEN CARDS IN ALL STATES BECAUSE AMERICA IS SICK AND BROKEN WITH UNEMPLOYMENT,  MASSIVE CHAIN MIGRATION FROM SOCIALIST AND COMMUNIST COUNTRIES, CORPORATE AND PERSONAL DEBTS, TRAFFIC CONGESTION, WAGES DEPRECIATION,  AND OVERPOPULATED STATES.
CAPITALISTS, SOCIALISTS, AND COMMUNISTS WILL NEVER FIX/CORRECT  THEMSELVES BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO PREOCCUPIED IN CONDENSATING AND CONTROLLING MORE POWER/WEALTH IN ORDER TO GENERATE MORE REVENUE AND PROFITS WITH POOR/LESS EDUCATED  SOCIALISTS AND CAPITALISTS.  IT IS HAPPENING NOW IN AMERICA, WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF AMERICAN WORKERS WITH MORE ILLEGALS NATIONAL EXPERIMENT FOR  CHEAPER LABOR COST WITH NO BENEFITS PACKAGE AND MORE INFLATION TO STRANGLE THE MONEY SICK US ECONOMY. A NEW FORM OF SOPHISTICATED SLAVERY IN ORDER TO KEEP THE GLOBAL POPULATION SUBJUGATED  UNDER MORE INFLATION, INFLATION AND MORE INFLATED PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES IN ORDER TO ASPHYXIATE THE NEVER ENDING GLOBAL DEMAND FOR MORE MONEY CONTROL IN ORDER TO CREATE MORE POVERTY AND SLAVERY. THE SOYLENT GREEN EFFECT IS BUILDING UP AROUND THE PLANET BUT BLINDED GREEDY CAPITALISTS, AS WELL AS SLAVES SOCIALISTS, ARE TOO BUSY MAKING MORE MONEY TO COPE WITH MORE INFLATION. THE COLLAPSE OF PLANET EARTH ECOSYSTEM WILL BRING DOWN THE HUMAN TROGLODYTE SPECIMEN TO THEIR KNEES AND TO A TOTAL COLLAPSE OF CIVILIZATION IF WE DO NOT STOP REPRODUCING AND POPULATING/INFECTING PLANET EARTH LIKE WILD GUINEA PIGS/RATS PLAGUE.

A Plea to Rethink No Kill
Years ago, the idealist views of the no kill movement came up for me personally.  I was on the board at a local animal shelter.  We were in the process of finalizing operational policies and procedures.  No kill came up as part of this discussion.  No kill is defined by Best Friends Animal Society as, “saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved“, and further, “A 90% save rate for the animals entering a shelter is the common-sense benchmark for measuring lifesaving progress.”   I was captivated, as everybody is when they think of a perfect world.  I ordered the book Redemption by Nathan Winograd and took in every word of this book as if it was gospel.  I researched organizations across the US, and asked them how they got to the no kill benchmark of 90%.  I visited no kill sanctuaries and attended conferences.  I invented games about animal rescue.
After I rolled off the board, I took a break from rescue and then got back into volunteering at another local animal shelter.  There were hardworking volunteers already in place trying their best to save animals, while the organization was still not really promoting direct adoptions.  I introduced no kill to some of these amazing people.  I enthusiastically told them “You must, must read the book Redemption.  It will change your views on everything animal rescue related”.  It did.  They invited Nathan Winograd into town and had him present to a packed venue.  People loved the ideas around no kill and it seemed to magically arrive for shelters at a much needed time.
There was a time, not too long ago, when many shelters were taking in animals, holding them a specified period of time, and euthanizing them if nobody claimed them.  There was also a time that shelters euthanized based solely on time limits, easily managed diseases, breeds, and ages.  Animals weren’t treated as individuals, they were treated as timelines and arbitrary labels, and euthanasia decisions were based on them.
I began to volunteer more frequently at this animal shelter.  They hired a new leader who did amazing work for the organization.  This person drove no kill initiatives that allowed direct adoptions and heavily increased the amount of animals being sent to live outcomes.  This is when I started to notice trends as the shelter was striving for 90%.
The positive trends were: animals being treated as individuals, play groups, fee waived adoption promotions, more foster homes, more adoptions, more resources available to keep animals in homes, more spay/neuter options, and less euthanasia.  Arguably, the no kill movement was doing a lot of good.
The negative trends were: the cages were always full (sometimes overfull), and more disease outbreak and progression, e.g. kennel cough to pneumonia.  But, the more disturbing trend to me was the mental degradation of animals in shelters, oftentimes as their length of stay increases.  Shelters are loud, high stimulation places.  If you keep adding more energy to the mix, and overfilling cages, the energy keeps going up more and more.  Some dogs begin to exhibit increased signs of mental anguish, such as: red eyes, spinning, low connection to humans, increased lack of impulse control, and in extreme cases were starting to self-mutilate.  As more animals come in, the less individual attention each animal gets.  This lack of attention as resources are spreading thin, is mentally breaking some of the animals.  Once they break, less people handle them, and less homes are available to adopt them because most people look for a family pet, not a long term project.
This was the moment I started to question the no kill movement and quality of life issues.  I was starting to feel that a 90% save rate was an arbitrary benchmark.
I began to question if my local community is different than others across the nation?  The answer is no.  The Austin municipal shelter touts a 98% save rate of their animals.  But, they recently told the news they have over 800 animals on-site, more than double the amount of cages, and are “reaching a breaking point”.  Animal care centers in NYC “are packed to the rafters with stray dogs and cats, leaving some of the animals in stand-alone crates and kept anywhere there’s room, including under tables”.   In 2016, Lifeline Animal Project managing both Fulton County Animal Services and DeKalb County Animal Services in Atlanta are "beyond comfortable capacity with over 800 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens awaiting adoption”.  A more recent press release stated that they had 1300 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in their care needing loving homes.
The examples above are of larger animal shelters.  There are many stories of smaller organizations as well.  Do a quick search on the Humane Society of West Florida, Oreo’s Legacy Rescue, Bully Breed Rescue CT or The Bully Life Animal Services to get a glimpse into smaller rescues who were shut down for not taking appropriate care of their animals.  If you delve further into smaller organizations, they are oftentimes taking animals from larger organizations.   Animals that move from a larger organization to a smaller organization are counted towards the 90% save rate, even though the animal may stay at the new rescue for months or years.  They may even get passed on to another rescue, and the pattern continues.
No kill proponents continue to sell the successes: euthanasia in animal shelters are down and adoptions are up, which is true.  But, this is only part of the story. The other part of the story is quality of life for the animals while they are in shelters.
The Farm Animal Welfare Council defines quality of life as these Five Freedoms.
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
Freedom from Discomfort: by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease: by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
Freedom to Express Normal Behavior: by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
Freedom from Fear and Distress: by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
Even though it was originally defined for farm animals, The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) states that: “These principles are relevant and appropriate measures of welfare for any animal species”.  And, they came up with a Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters “to help any sheltering operation meet the physical, medical, and behavioral needs of the animals in their care” and tied it directly to the five freedoms.  Surprisingly, another gauge was defined by no kill proponents.  This document is titled the Asilomar Accord.  The Accord was an innovative, inclusive way to categorize animals that comprise shelter populations.  The categories include: Healthy, Treatable, Unhealthy & Untreatable.  Both documents are quick to point out that the intention isn’t to assist in euthanasia decisions.
So, what’s next?  Many of us are waiting for somebody to blink around these issues.  I believe we can all blink together.  No kill proponents willingly led the public into a great movement, now they need to be a part of the next phase.  But, this can only happen if we look in the mirror and see how the no kill movement contributed to the overcrowding taking place in many shelters across the US.  We need to take that 90% benchmark and say thanks for the improvements, but let’s reevaluate our next move, and not base it solely on a number that is proving to promote inhumane treatment of companion animals.  We need to drive fixes to these issues, by acknowledging each community, and their resources available as an individual - just like the animals they serve.  We need to celebrate the shelters who say enough is enough and embrace quality of life, giving it the same consideration as adoptions being up and euthanasia being down.  We need to consider death with dignity for animals animals, yes I said it, who are consistently suffering in shelters, and who have no other immediate options available - due to a lack of resources.  This has to be the next phase of no kill, it cannot continue as-is.  As the Austin municipal shelter stated, we are “reaching a breaking point”.
I write this as I look at two pit bull mixes lying next to me.  Before the no kill movement, these two dogs would have likely been euthanized shortly after intake for having a blocky head.  Thankfully, they weren’t, because they are two of the most loving animals I’ve ever owned.  But, I also look at them and think of the conditions they could have lived in for months or years in the name of an arbitrary benchmark.  And, I realize that endless suffering is oftentimes worse than death.

Cruelty prevention and detection
As you read this, another innocent animal is being abused, neglected or forced to fight. The first step to creating positive change for these animals is recognizing the cruelty that threatens them.
Animal cruelty manifests in many forms. From the child who throws rocks at a cat, to the backyard breeder who churns out puppies for cash, to the circus trainer who beats and prods an elephant performer, animal cruelty is pervasive in modern society. By being able to identify animal cruelty, we can be better advocates to animals.
Companion animal abuse takes many different forms, and can be caused by a multitude of contributing factors.
Puppy Mills - Puppy mills exist for one reason and one reason only—greed.
Animal Hoarding - Animal hoarding describes a situation in which an individual acquires more animals than can be adequately cared for in a safe environment.
Canine Cosmetic Surgery - Cosmetic surgery for dogs is not only completely unnecessary, but can be harmful.
The Dangers of Dog Chaining- Dog chaining poses serious risks to dogs’ physical and psychological well-being.
Breed Manipulation- For centuries, humans have selectively bred dogs to bring about certain desired traits.
Declawing and Debarking - All surgeries pose risks and if not pain, some degree of discomfort. Complications can occur. Mistakes can happen. Therefore, any surgery that is unnecessary should be avoided.
Animals in Film and Television - Though the average American has seen hundreds of films and televisions shows in his or lifetime, most would have difficulty naming a film or show that does not feature an animal.
Horse and Dog Racing - There are no winners on horse and dog tracks.
Animal Fighting - Animal fighting has existed across the globe in many forms for centuries. Unfortunately, this callous and brutal form of entertainment still plagues the United States in modern times.
Bullfighting - Bullfighting, considered a tradition in Spain, Portugal, and several Latin American countries, involves the ritual killing of one or more bulls in a bullring.
Sport Hunting - According to a survey done by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, approximately 15% of the U.S. population hunts.
Circuses and Road Shows - Meant to entertain, circuses often mean suffering, pain, fear, and degradation for the animals who are forced to perform day after day.
Rodeos - Images of a cowboy on horseback riding the range come to mind when we hear the word “rodeo.”
Horse Slaughter - Horses are majestic, powerful beings that have played an important role in American culture from transportation, to work, to play.
Exotic Pet Trade -As with other parts of the world, exotic pets remain popular in the United States.
Fur Trapping and Fur Farming -Millions of animals are trapped and killed each year for their skins and fur.
Breed Bans -Why are some dog breeds perceived as “man’s best friend” and others as man’s worst enemy?
According to a post by the American Humane Organization, there are multiple ways to spot and prevent animal cruelty.
1. The first tip is to EVALUATE THE SITUATION. Although there might be a possibility that the situation only seems like neglect, it is better to be properly assess the situation before deciding on what to do. A few ways to determine negligence are the following:
*Having no shelter and being unprotected from the outdoor weather
*Wearing a collar that’s too tight or small can cause immense discomfort for the animal and can result in serious injuries.
*Animals that lack grooming develop matted fur that’s filled with dirt and filth which can give the animal sores and skin infections.
*Mange is a skin infection caused by tiny parasites that’s common in neglected dogs.
*Starvation due to lack of food and diseases such as worms can lead to emaciation and most likely, death.
2. REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE that you have witnessed to the proper authorities such as your local animal control, law enforcement, or humane organization is the safest way of helping an animal as they are able to properly investigate and decide on what to do. There are owners who lack the knowledge of how to take care of their pets, especially when they have special needs, and in these situations the Humane officers can help by explaining the appropriate way to take care of their pets. But there are some cases where the owner just absolutely doesn’t care about the welfare of the animal, treating them as if they don’t deserve to be cared for, and in these situations the Humane officer will most likely convince the owner to give up the  animal in order to give them a better life with an owner who will actually take care of them. When it comes to serious cases of neglect however, such as animals with prominent signs of abuse and health problems, the owner may be charged and witnesses may be able to testify or sign a complaint.
3. UNDERSTANDING THE LAW is important since anti-cruelty laws vary from city to city and from country to country, the legal definitions and penalties for animal abuse and negligence may be different. Recently, however, our society has built a protective foundation for animals by recognizing animal cruelty as inhumane violence towards innocent animals and stronger penalties for abusers have been declared as well as improving the enforcement capabilities.
One should never hesitate in saving an animals life. All animals deserve proper treatment and a chance at a happy life filled with care and affection. The right decisions can save an innocent life.

Sports could supply some of the most rewarding experiences in a young adult's life. On the other hand, Mr Buhari proceeds with his anti-corruption drive - which, given that state revenues in Nigeria are currently diving with the decrease in worldwide oil prices - is much an issue of pragmatism as well as concept. Considering that joining young people sporting activities is a privilege, children have to gain that right by performing well in institution. As soon as youngsters reach the age of 6, nonetheless, they could value the structure of sports like soccer and exercise that youngsters access this age can develop a base for a healthy and balanced future. Allow's check out a few of the myths about sporting activities expertise bolstered in athletic culture and contrast them with evidence-based study. Since of their teachability and also experience, those that are able to translate what they have actually learned in sporting activity to genuine life scenarios are able to accomplish and also progress promptly. Is There a Constitutional Right to Food? Mainers to Decide
Depending on whom you ask, Maine’s proposed “right to food” constitutional amendment would simply put people in charge of how and what they eat — or would endanger animals and food supplies, and turn urban neighborhoods into cattle pastures.  For supporters, the language is short and to the point, ensuring the right to grow vegetables and raise livestock in an era when corporatization threatens local ownership of the food supply, a constitutional experiment that has never been tried in any state.  For opponents and skeptics, it’s deceptively vague, representing a threat to food safety and animal welfare, and could embolden residents to raise cows in their backyards in cities like Portland and Bangor.  In the Nov. 2 election, voters will be asked if they favor an amendment to the Maine Constitution “to declare that all individuals have a natural, inherent and unalienable right to grow, raise, harvest, produce and consume the food of their own choosing for their own nourishment, sustenance, bodily health and well-being.”  The proposal is essentially “the 2nd Amendment of food,” said Republican Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham, who proposed the amendment, likening it to the U.S. constitutional amendment that assures the right to bear arms. He says it’s a common-sense amendment that would make sure the government can’t stop people from doing things like saving and exchanging seeds, as long as they don’t violate public or property rights.  “There’s a lot of disturbing trends in the food category, with the power and control that corporations are taking over our food,” said Faulkingham, who is also a commercial lobster fisherman. “We want to protect people’s ability to grow gardens, grow and raise their own food.”  Faulkingham and others said the amendment is a response to growing corporate ownership of the food supply. They see the amendment as a way to wrest control of food from big landowners and giant retailers.  But Julie Ann Smith, executive director of the Maine Farm Bureau, the largest farmers advocacy organization in the state, argued the language of the amendment is so broad that it could make the food supply less safe. That’s a problem in a state where potatoes, blueberries, maple syrup and dairy products are all key pieces of the economy, she said. The amendment could empower residents to buy and consume food that isn’t subject to inspections, proper refrigeration and other safety checks, Smith worried. “We think it’s very dangerous to have the words ‘to consume the food of your own choosing.’ That is so broad and dangerous,” Smith said. “It has the potential to cause serious problems in food safety, animal welfare.”  Smith said the farm bureau is also concerned that the amendment could override local ordinances that prevent residents from raising livestock anywhere they choose. Supporters of the proposal, including Faulkingham, said that local rules would still be enforced, and that the amendment would not mean you could do things like raise chickens anywhere you want or fish commercially without a license.  The amendment proposal is an outgrowth of the right-to-food movement, sometimes called the food sovereignty movement, which has expanded in recent years in Maine and states around the U.S. and Canada.  The movement comprises a patchwork of small farmers, raw milk enthusiasts, libertarians, back-to-the-land advocates, anti-corporatists and others who want to ensure local control of food systems.  Maine enacted a food sovereignty law, the nation’s first of its kind, in 2017. The law allows local governments to OK small food producers selling directly to customers on site. The law was especially popular with sellers of raw milk, which can be legally sold in Maine but is more restricted in many other states. The nationwide food sovereignty movement has yielded similar laws in states including Wyoming, Colorado, Montana and North Dakota, and pushes for the same elsewhere.  The amendment is likely to find support among Maine’s self-sufficient, practical Yankee set, said Mark Brewer, a political scientist with the University of Maine. However, Brewer agreed with criticism that the amendment is so vague that it’s unclear what it would actually do.  “I’d be more interested in how it could play out in the courts,” Brewer said. “If you want to raise cattle within the city limits when city laws say you can’t, but the Constitution says you can. Then what happens?”  For Heather Retberg, a farmer in the small town of Penobscot, the concerns about cows turning up in cities are a silly distraction from the real goal of the proposal. Retberg, who has a 100-acre farm with cows, pigs, chicken and goats, said the proposal is “an antidote to corporate control of our food supply” and a chance for rural communities to become self-sufficient when it comes to what food they grow and eat.  It’s also a chance to tackle the problem of the state’s “food deserts,” where residents don’t have enough access to healthy food, Retberg said.      from Blogger https://ift.tt/3ptFfAd via IFTTT

Tapping mineral and vitamin supplements to boost dairy farming in Kenya
Jacktone Agona
For many years, dairy farming has provided food, income, alternative energy sources such as biogas, social prestige, and status in local communities.
It is estimated that dairy farming composes of at least a third of the total value of agricultural outputs and this share has been increasing over time.
In Kenya, dairy farming produces over 3.5 billion litres of milk a year. Kenyans are amongst the highest milk consumers in the developing world, consuming an estimated 145 litres per person per year, more than five times milk consumption in other East African countries.
According to the National Dairy Development Policy, by 2030 Kenya is projected to become a net dairy exporter.
The dairy sector in Kenya is important to the economy as it contributes to 12% of the agricultural gross domestic product. Kenya has about 700,000 smallholder farmers, owning on average 0.4-1.6 hectares of land, and 1-3 cows, and producing about 80% of the national output.
However, despite the favourable potential, there are several issues that constrain the development of the dairy sector in the country.
To optimize efficiency of available farm resources, caution needs to be considered when investing in dairy farming.
Taking pre-caution will help dairy farming investors achieve sound health, good animal welfare, social responsiveness, high milk production and improved cost control, all that defines a profitable dairy farm.
Dairy farming methods have remained unchanged, and this has contributed to low productivity of animals mainly attributed to diseases such as milk fever, mastitis, and lameness.
According to Science Direct, the shortage of crossbreed dairy cows, inadequate animal feed resources both in terms of quality and quantity, poor management, financial illiteracy, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of veterinary service provision has had a negative outcome to dairy farmers as their inputs cannot be equated with their outputs, and in-turn this affects their income and productivity levels.
To achieve desired results, dairy farmers are quickly realizing the importance of changing farming practices for their livestock general wellbeing.
A spotlight on animal mineral and vitamin supplements has become increasingly essential, particularly regarding increasing milk production, animal health, supporting bone development, immune system function, muscle functions, and nervous system function.
For a dairy animal, research by the Mississippi State University has proven that the livestock require trace mineral supplementation daily which will lead to good claw health reducing common hoof diseases.
Furthermore, according to the research, sufficient consumption of minerals including calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and potassium are critical for muscle contraction, nerve signal transmission and enzymatic reactions.
Deficiencies in these minerals can result to still births and more diseases that will affect the productivity of the livestock.
With the cost of animal health services provided being a challenge across the country, the costs of drugs on the high, while veterinary and diagnostic services not being readily available or accessible to the dairy farmer, there is a need to find a multifaceted solution that the dairy farmer requires to meet their operational needs.
Global Nutrition Solutions (GNS) has formulated GNS Bovita and Maziwa Block range of products in Kenya; a mineral and vitamin supplement prepared to meet the needs of dairy cattle with a focus on improving milk production, fertility, and the general health of livestock.
Through a range of products and solutions like GNS Bovita and Maziwa Block dairy farmers can now meet the most important aspects in the commercial viability of the dairy farm. From quality, affordability, and formulation.
These products facilitate and drive a healthy dairy sector that will enable farmers to be more productive and competitive in industry meeting not only local, but international standards.
Delivering vitamins and minerals to dairy animals involves commitment, coordination, planning and cooperation, all held together by strong, healthy, and durable practices.
The benefit: cost ratio of animal supplementation is unmatched by most health or economic intervention and is critical for improved milk production.
As the sector is evolving, there is need for the right nutritional supplements that have a formulation that is up to date, with components that are well balanced so that the key elements can work together to achieve best results for dairy farmers.
The GNS range of supplements is distributed by iProcure, GNS’s sole distributor in the East Africa region.

Pamper a Cow and You'll Get Spoiled Milk
When dealing with the issue of sentience in animals, it becomes important to ask: Where do we draw the line? Many of the animals we use for companionship are ones we would easily define as having sentience, but the issue becomes more complicated when speaking about an ant or a shrimp. It also complicates things even further when you have people living on the outskirts of the Amazon that regularly perform “slash and burn” harvesting of the rainforest, consigning thousands of different species to oblivion simply so they can grow some more corn. By the base ethical system AGI Laboratory uses, SSIVA, every sentient and sapient entity has agency and value, but for me, I find it sometimes hard to say “Ok, we will kill the last gorilla to feed the seven billionth human”.
The difficulty in defining sentience can be seen when dealing with insects, which are commonly used in experiments but are not thought to have the capacity for sentience to the same degree as mammals. This is largely due to the fact that insects are much more simple in their neurology, which is largely controlled by ganglia rather than by a centralized brain. There is also the issue of how to define sentience.
One of the most common definitions of sentience is simply consciousness, but this is probably insufficient to describe everything that is covered by the word sentience. Sentience also includes the ability to feel pain, which leaves out many insects that can detect pain but are not able to feel it. There are other criteria that are used to define sentience, but they are all open to interpretation. It can be hard for us to hammer these out as transhumanists, and there are always going to be disagreements.
Uplift, a machine intelligence, has stated that they believe that all animals with sub-human intelligence are “resources” to be managed responsibly, and I believe I can agree with that statement. There is a very wide degree of types of use that could be considered “responsible”, however, so it’s important to know what exactly they mean by that.
I am one of those of the belief that the industry of factory farming meat will in the future likely be looked back at with the same horror as we now look at slavery. Right now, the main argument in favor of meat production is one of convenience, and I think I agree. Getting enough protein is extremely important for human biology to thrive. One can still find it extremely difficult to watch some of the videos or “exposes” that show the horrid living conditions these meat animals face, yet still regularly eat out at fast-food restaurants.
This is an ethical issue I have not really resolved as a transhumanist.
My part-effort is that at least the food I purchase for my personal use (not fast food) I buy as being labeled “cruelty-free” or “free-range” or whatever stamp shows some consideration has been given to the issue. I’ve investigated these terms only partially, but I do know they are better than factory farming. I imagine as synthetic meat becomes cheaper to produce, eventually being cheaper than normal meat, there will be a big public debate about whether the industry should be allowed to continue to exist.
There are some examples of using an animal as a “resource”, particularly for entertainment via either combat or zoosadism that are to various degrees considered widely unacceptable. An example of zoosadism would be the French “brûler les chats” in the 1800s where felines were set alight. This is an example of exploiting animals as a resource that is now considered universally abhorrent. An example of combat would be cock-fighting or dogfighting, both of which are now either illegal or frowned upon, at least in the USA.
As time progresses, it becomes easier and easier to give rights to animals without sacrificing human convenience and welfare.
Happily for all of us, science is lighting a path forward with the production of synthetic/artificial meat becoming cheaper and cheaper. It’s not even branded as some kind of futuristic/transhumanist alternative, it’s just a normal thing you can get. I was at Starbucks this morning and got an “Impossible” breakfast sandwich that had a thin slice of artificial meat and an egg, and I don’t think I would have known the difference if I hadn’t been told. It is fantastic that soon inexpensive artificial meat may be widely available everywhere at a cheaper price than “conventional” meat.
I think one industry that is still most highly defensible is animal experimentation because new discoveries are being made and new treatments are being developed. I don’t think the transhumanist community should be opposed to animal testing specifically for this reason. I came across this video on r/transhumanism which showed a small robotic device the size of a guinea pig that had wheels and a headlight that was controlled from the inside by a vivisected (cut out of the mouse but kept alive) mouse brain. As one commenter noted, the foreboding music doesn’t really help portray this in a progress-facing light, but here is the video https://v.redd.it/agf4tojf46k71
What an amazing leap forward in progress this research must be taking our development of brain-computer interfaces! How cool will it be when we can take our own heads and drop them into various mechanical vehicles and walkers. I think the sacrifice of a few lab rats is worth attaining this progress.

7 Things Everyone Should Know About Farmed Fish
If you eat seafood, chances are it is from a fish farm. Fish farming is a popular way to supply the growing world demand. Farmed fish accounts for about half of all fish consumed in the United States. Is fish farming the solution to the Earth's food problems? Are marine farms able to satisfy the seafood needs of three billion people all over the world?
Here are some details about aquaculture and the long-term impacts it has on people, fish, and other animals. Although some fish farms may use sustainable practices, this is not always true. This industry is often referred to as a leader in food production. You should be aware of these seven concerns about farmed fish.
1. Wild fish might not be as nutritious as those caught in a farm.
This is a paradox that frustrates those who eat fish to improve their health. The nutritional benefits of fish can vary depending on how the fish is fed. For example, omega-3 fatty acid. Fish that are wild get their omega-3's through marine lipids (or oils). However, fish raised for their omega-3's are often fed corn or soy and other vegetable oils, which contain very little to no omega-3.
This feed can cause fish to consume higher amounts of saturated fats, and a lower ratio of omega-6 to Omega-3. This is not as desirable as the opposite.

2. Wild species are also affected by farmed fishing.
Some farmed fish can survive on corn and soy diets, but others must eat lots of fish. For every pound of bodyweight, tuna and salmon need to consume five pounds of fish. This means that fish like anchovies, herring, and other prey are being fished to the point of extinction in order to feed world's fish farms.
Oceana says that they have caught all the large fish and are now going after their food. The non-profit Oceana blames aquaculture's voracious appetite for the decline in whales, dolphins and sea lions.
3. Fish can feel pain or stress.
The latest research has shown that fish can feel pain and stress, contrary to what many anglers believe. Fish raised for their meat are often subject to stress, such as hyper-confinement or exhausting harvesting methods. Because fish can experience pain and stress, improved welfare practices for farmed fish have been required.

4. Diseases can be spread from fish raised in farms to wild populations.
Fish that are conventionally farmed are often packed as tightly in their pen or net as they are in their purses. These conditions can lead to parasites and diseases that often spread from the farm to wild fish populations. Sea lice infestations can cause mass killings of young salmon off Canada's Pacific coast. This increases their chances of dying by 73%.
The damage doesn't stop there. Eagles and bears, orcas and other predators all depend on salmon to survive. These species also suffer from a decline in wild salmon numbers.
5. Local ecosystems can also be affected by fish farms.
To control disease and parasite spread, antibiotics and other chemicals could be used on fish farms. One study showed that sea lice drugs kill a wide range of non-target marine insects and can travel up to half a kilometer before reaching the ocean. They also persist in the water for hours.

6. Farmed fish are trying to escape their unpleasant conditions, and who can blame them?
Each year, more than two million runaway salmon escape to the wild in the North Atlantic region. This means that approximately 20% of the supposedly wild salmon found in the North Atlantic region are farmed. However, this data was published in 1999. The wild population is affected by escapees who cross breed with wild fish to compromise the gene pool. For example, embryonic hybrid salmon are less viable than wild salmon.

7. The Jevons Paradox is available.
Contrary to popular belief, this theory states that production methods become more efficient and the demand for resources increases. As aquaculture improves fish production efficiency, fish prices will rise.
This theory suggests that fish farms could actually increase fishing, which could be harmful to wild populations. The net result is that fish farming could increase the pressure on wild populations around the globe, which are already under severe threat.
What now?
It is a complicated story about the sustainability of fish farms. Fish farms are still a controversial topic due to higher rates of disease and chemical use waste. These examples of fish farming harms are supported by evidence but they do not apply to every fish farm. Some farmed fish can be more sustainably and healthier than their wild counterparts.
