the cognitive dissonance from people who want the products of modern medicine but get weird about animal research. like im sorry but this is necessary for the survival of the society we currently live in. and the scientists who work on these things are not evil cackling psychopaths. anyone you talk to in animal research has incredibly complex feelings about their work and incredibly complex relationships to the animals in their care. there are regulations and oversight and penalties in place to make the work as humane as possible and scientists are overwhelmingly the ones enforcing and advocating for better care.

A study on how transcranial focused ultrasound was able to link a human brain to a rat's. The human basically thought, and then the rat twitched it's tail.

What’s you thoughts on what happen to Laika
I think that Laika was yet another victim of horrific animal experimentation, whose needless death was no more or less remarkable than any of the others. She died a horrible and slow death of overheating while under extreme stress, something the scientists who sent her to die knew was likely to happen.
After the Soviet Union had lied about it for years in their propaganda, in 2002, Russian scientist Dimitri Malashenkov revealed that Laika had survived only about five to seven hours after liftoff before dying of overheating and panic. It was belatedly made known that Laika’s pulse rate tripled during takeoff and only came down somewhat during weightlessness.
This wasn’t a test of how the body responds to overheating in space that would at least yield useful data to prevent future deaths. Laika didn’t ensure the survival of future dogs, who had to endure the same stress. This happened because The Soviet scientists had insufficient time to perfect life-support systems, due to political pressure to launch in time for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution. That is what she died for.
This was not a noble sacrifice worthy of celebration, it was an unimaginably stressed out dog cruelly sent to her death because her captors believed that animals are expendable, and that it is perfectly acceptable for them to suffer in order to serve frivolous human interests. This is unfortunately a sentiment that many people still agree with. I constantly see her death being glorified on Tumblr, as well as the repetition of literal state propaganda; all because it makes for a nicer story than the truth.

Elon Musk's company Neuralink has just been given FDA approval to start human trials (Washington Post) (The Guardian) (CNBC).
Yes, the same Neuralink that was put under investigation by the USDA for animal abuse (The Guardian) (Reuters), and that the PCRM believes killed 15 of the 23 monkeys it experimented on (Fortune).

“A new U.S. law has eliminated the requirement that drugs in development must undergo testing in animals before being given to participants in human trials.
Animal rights advocates have long pushed for such a move, and some in the pharmaceutical industry have argued that animal testing can be ineffective and expensive...
Signed by President Biden in December as part of a larger spending package, the law doesn't ban the testing of new drugs on animals outright.
Instead it simply lifts the requirement that pharmaceutical companies use animals to test new drugs before human trials. Companies can still test drugs on animals if they choose to.
There are a slew of other methods that drugmakers employ to assess new medications and treatments, such as computer modeling and "organs on a chip," thumb-sized microchips that can mimic how organs' function are affected by pharmaceuticals.
But Aliasger Salem, a professor at the University of Iowa's College of Pharmacy, told NPR that companies opting to use these alternative testing methods as a replacement for animal testing must be aware of the methods' limits to ensure their drugs are safe.
"The companies need to be aware of the limitations of those technologies and their ability to identify or not identify potential toxicities," Salem said.
"You don't want to shift to systems that might not capture all of the types of toxicities that have been seen in the past without ensuring that the methods that you have will capture that."
An FDA spokesperson told NPR that it will "implement all applicable provisions in the omnibus and continue to work with stakeholders to encourage the development of alternative testing methods."
This year's federal budget also includes $5 million for a new FDA program aimed at reducing animal testing by helping to develop and encourage industry to adopt new product testing methods, the spokesperson said.”

So essentially the government lifted this ban or only without consultation, but without even telling anyone… UK vegans will need to make sure we’re researching brands producing cosmetics here, and make sure the company that you’re buying from isn’t involved in testing.
