Care but be detached... It's not your fault that the ASPCA uses late night guilt commercials (5 min long at least) showing dogs in a bad situation and even talk like they are near death with a camera on them. Put the camera down and help that dog yourself you piece of shit. Fine and penalties will be assessed to the person(s) whom is responsible for that animal. I care deeply for the life of any animal but don't use guilt to get me to donate money that you will get for that animal already. Just mute it or better change the channel or go to bed. Care but be detached.
Do you know if the ASPCA is reliable, credible, or ethical? I see commercials about them all the time but I’ve never stopped to think about it.
I haven’t done much research into ASPCA as a non-profit; however, I do know that they do some good work! Unlike HSUS, they do indeed operate an actual shelter in NYC, as well as an incredibly helpful 24/7 Pet Poison Control hotline. So, they are actually helping animals, which is more than a lot of these big charities can say.
Transduction and a domestic cat's perception of a meow's meaning
Is it like binary to them?
Seemingly, a cat's meow triggers in the cat a response in a way that parallels the way the pores on CDs are read and converted into imagery and sound through transduction.
Cats are born knowing to meow to gain their own feline mother's attention, and seem to learn their meow-language automatically as they grow and age, suggesting that feline language is genetically encoded into a cat's brain from birth.
I've learned to mimic the meow of the rescue strays I took care of in my teenage years. I wish to test the above theory, but lack the infrastructure to conduct such research. I am disappointed...
The Elwood Dagmar Memorial Marathon returns in 2022! This time, we will be raising money for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Humane Society of the United States!
For those who don’t know, Elwood Dagmar was Kit’s boy; she got him while she was living in Milwaukee when he was just a little guy. He was a grumpy old man who would cuddle on his terms and loved to wander down the hall of our building and sit under the stairs until we made him head back to the apartment. On weekend mornings, he would come into my room and sit with me in bed until I got up. We sadly had to let him go in April 2020 when he developed major kidney problems. We miss him every day and now hold this marathon in his honor.
For this year’s marathon, Kit will be playing the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. We don’t have a set goal in mind for fundraising, but if we get to $1000, I will read something I’ve written on air. I currently have no idea what.
More updates as they come, including the link to the Tiltify page once it goes live!
against child abuse in the year 1874. The name of the child was Mary Ellen Wilson. One year later, in April of 1875, the first Child Protective Agency, the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was founded. And by 1900 there were 150 such agencies in the U.S.A.
The reasoning of the ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, at that time, was that children are animals, and if people were protesting cruelty to animals then children had to be included, as well.
It' was stunning to learn that Americans thought of preventing cruelty (abuse) to farm animals and pets before we thought of preventing cruelty (abuse) to children. At least it only to 8 years to go from animal cruelty to child abuse. Eight years because the ASPCA was founded in 1866.
Oh, and a heartfelt thank you to the founders of the ASPCA and the NYSPCC for starting the trends to stop abusive behaviors.
