For the domestic prompts requests: "Wait...Is she walking" for Mick and Laurel
Me: Excitedly squeals that someone sent me a Mick/Laurel prompt.
My rabbit: Unimpressed
Thank you so much for this! I never have any good ideas for these two, no one ever prompts them, and I love them so much!
First Steps
Read on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/20176588
Mick never saw his life panning out like this.
Never, not once in his wildest dreams. He always thought he would go out in a blaze of glory taking on too many cops in a bank heist by the time he was thirty. At the very least he thought he might waste away in prison. He never thought he would turn his life around, never thought he would get the chance to play the hero, never mind take it. He never thought they would ever be able to change what happened to Sara’s sister, and he never had any reason to believe she would be so much like the rest of them. Lost, and looking for a place to belong.
He never could’ve dreamed that place would end up being with him.
But, through some strange fault in fate, it did.
She started seeking him out whenever she and Sara fought, they’d been apart a long time for her but even longer for Sara. Things had changed, and she said it was in the way he and Sara worked, she thought he could help her adjust. Somehow, in that, they became each other’s confidants and before he knew it, for the first time in four years, he was sober more often than he wasn’t.
Being her friend was nice. They worked together in a way he never has with anyone. She had his back on and off the field, which he can say for most of the rest of the team, but it was different with her. She didn’t just leave him to his demons whenever he had a bad day, she’d grab his hand and drag him down to the training room if she had to. The others, he knew, were always open to talk, but it was easier with her. The shit she went through with Sara when they were younger, she got things the others just didn’t. She knew him.
The first time they slept together, he thought it was a mistake. He’d never cared before about messing up a friendship, but he’d never had a friendship like the one he had with Laurel. Once it was done, though, he couldn’t believe he’d done it. He was nobody’s first choice, he’d long accepted that, and when she inevitably met someone else he would rather it be easier to not lose her presence in his life by not having to tell her someone else he’d slept with her, and have them find out it meant something to him.
Turns out that was something else he never would’ve thought; he is her someone.
For a while they had a friends-with-benefits thing going, and it was great. It was less than a month before the whole team knew, but that was typical when you lived on a ship with eight other people. Even so, he got a little confused when she started leaning close during briefings, kissing him in the galley in the morning, all that stuff. He wasn’t complaining, hell no way was he complaining, but after putting it off for a while he brought it up with her, and then that was it. They were together.
He kept waiting for it to end, for her to wise up and leave him, but the days turned to weeks, and weeks to months. He never thought he could have the happiness that they had on that ship. She told him she loved him and he believed her, couldn’t understand why, but believed it. His life was good; something he never thought he could have.
Then, when they were just shy of a year together, something else he never could’ve dreamed happened.
She handed him a positive pregnancy test.
“Well,” he’d said to her, after he’d gotten over the initial shock of the news. “Guess you’re stuck with me now, Birdie.”
She’d kissed him and told him she wouldn’t have it any other way.
It’s been about a year and a half since that day. The two of them decided to settle down in the present, something else Mick never once imagined himself doing, and got a little place in Central City. Their daughter, Grace Quinn Rory, is currently a month out from her first birthday and straddled comfortably on Laurel’s hip, who is coming into the living room and frowning at her phone.
“My mom can’t sit tonight, something came up at work.”
Ah, well that’s disappointing.
Laurel, obviously disappointed as well, huffs and plops next to him on the couch, swinging Grace around and into her lap.
“Well that sucks.” She mumbles, and while he does agree with her he can’t quite bring himself to share her sentiment, not when Grace is smiling and gurgling happily since being turned around.
He hums, his fingers playing with the ends of his daughter’s curly hair.
“We could send her to Scarlett.” He suggests, but Laurel only sighs even deeper.
“Iris is like, a day away from her due date.” She reminds him, “She can’t be worried about three babies right now, and Barry.”
Right, and that takes out his next two suggestions: Caitlin and Ramon. The whole S.T.A.R. Labs crew has been pulling crazy hours lately, trying to keep Barry home as much as possible.
“I’m sure your mom can sit tomorrow.” He suggests, his brow furrowing a little with worry when Laurel slumps even deeper into the cushions.
“Probably.” She admits, “I was just really looking forward to tonight.” She lolls her head, looking at him with those big doe eyes of hers.
“We haven’t been out in so long.” She groans, and he chuckles, cause it hasn’t been that long.
“And…” she adds, a quick glance down at Grace to be sure she is sufficiently distracted with something. “I had some fun planned for tonight.”
Well, now he’s bummed out.
“We can still do that.” He says quickly, to which she gives him a knowing look that calls bull.
“With the way she’s been sleeping lately?” She asks, and ok, that’s true. Grace had a cold last week, couldn’t sleep at all cause she couldn’t breathe, and even though she’s getting over it she still hasn’t fallen back into a solid sleep pattern.
Right now, though, you would never know that. She’s got as much energy as she always done, like she isn’t only sleeping a few broken hours a night. Nope, she’s thrown herself over Laurel’s arm and is gunning for the remote like she’ll know how to use it once she gets it in her hands.
That gives him an idea.
“Who says we gotta wait for tonight?”
Laurel looks… surprised. Interested, but definitely unsure. So, he stands up and nods at the remote that has Grace so captivated.
“Kid gets into her shows.” He reminds her, “Put some Bubble Guppies on and lets go.”
At first Laurel only gapes at him, but he knows that look she gets when she’s thinking on something, and boy does she have it now.
Their room isn’t more than halfway down the hall, and even with Grace an avid crawler and getting the hang of standing up they’ve already moved most things she could get into out of her potential reach.
“Ok,” she agrees, and then she scoops up the remote, plops Grace on the floor with a sloppy kiss to her head, and within five minutes they’re in their bedroom with the door closed over.
“So, wat’cha got planned?” He asks as she all but shoves him onto the bed.
She’s giggling the whole way, even as he sits back on the mattress and allows her to climb up into his lap.
“Well…” She drawls out, one hand firm on his chest and her breath warm and close enough to tickle at his ear. “I might have to make a few adjustments, Bubble Guppies is only a half hour…”
Never, never, should the words “Bubble Guppies” be said in THAT tone of voice. For as much as he’s always enjoyed the notion of a ticking clock, he never thought a kid’s show would be the timer, and he’s not sure how he feels about being this turned on by it.
Then again, when Laurel is looking at him like she is and her voice has become a purr, he’s pretty sure she could say anything and it would turn him on.
“But…” She goes on, “There are definitely some things I know we-”
The sound of a loud thud from the hall cuts her off. They both listen, most thoughts of their fun moving to the sidelines of their minds. There’s the telltale creek of the floorboards, and another thud. Actually, the thuds are more like slaps. But they sound like they’re against the wall, not the floor, and it’s moving slower than their little speed-demon of a crawler normally-
“Wait…” Laurel drawls, disbelief taken over her voice and her eyes off him and on the door. “Is she walking?”
They’re up within an instant.
She jumps off him, he wastes no time in following her up, and just as he comes up behind her in the doorway she gasps and no sooner has the sound left her mouth that he’s gotten a look into the hall.
He swears he stops breathing for a second.
Grace is standing there, hands against the wall and little head turned towards them, looking at them with those big green eyes of hers like she has no idea why they’re staring back.
“Gracie?” Laurel nearly squeals, stepping into the hall and thus letting him out, squatting down to Gracie’s level. “Did you walk over here all by yourself?!”
A huge grin lights up Gracie’s face, accompanied by a giggle that Laurel exaggeratingly mimics as she holds out her arms.
“Come here!” She calls, “Come to mommy! Come walk to mommy!”
Mick’s honestly not sure if she’s really going to do it. For all they know, she crawled over her then stood herself up. Grace doesn’t look too sure either, but Laurel keeps on calling her, and it isn’t long before she, with that happy smile still on her face, is pushing off the wall and taking slow, stocking steps towards them.
Laurel gasps again, and keeps cheering her on. She almost doesn’t make it, but yet she does, and collapses into her mother’s waiting arms soon as she reaches them.
“Ohh! Good job!” Laurel praises, standing up with Grace cuddled happily against her chest. “You did such a good job!”
He snickers, his smile is probably bright as Grace’s right now, and he reaches his hand over to tickle her, getting her to laugh.
“You’re a big girl munchkin.” He praises her, tickling her some more and getting more laughs until she flops herself into his grasp.
He holds her under her bottom with one arm, and keeps tickling her side with his other hand. She keeps giggling, him and Laurel too, and he presses a kiss to the side of her head.
Mick never once imagined his life would pan out like this, but not in a million years would he ever want it any other way.
“Keep it up,” he tells Grace, “And I’m gonna tell Scarlett you’re coming for him.”

Video games coming to Netflix? Latest hiring offers a clue
SAN RAMON, Calif
Netflix has hired veteran video game executive Mike Verdu, signaling the video streaming service is poised to expand into another fertile field of entertainment.
Verdu's addition as Netflix's vice president of game development, confirmed Thursday, comes as the company seeks to sustain the momentum it gathered last year when people turned to the video streaming service to get through lockdowns imposed during the pandemic.
Netflix wound up adding 37 million worldwide subscribers last year, by far the largest annual gain in its history. But the landscape has changed dramatically now that the easing pandemic has allowed people to return to a semblance of their normal lives.
The video service stumbled out of the gate during the first three months of this year, posting its smallest first-quarter subscriber increase in four years, and it predicted its springtime gains would also be meager. The Los Gatos, California, company is scheduled to report its results for the April-June period on Tuesday.
Adding video games would give Netflix another way to build upon the nearly 208 million subscribers that it boasted at the end of March. It wouldn't come as a surprise either, given that Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings has long said the company competes as much against video games for a piece of people's leisure time as it does against other video streaming services offered by the likes of Amazon, Hulu, Walt Disney Co. and Apple.
Netflix didn't directly comment on its potential entry into video gaming, but left little doubt about its intent by announcing Verdu's title at the company. Verdu is joining Netflix from Facebook's Oculus, where he oversaw the virtual reality headset maker's games. He previously worked at video game makers Electronic Arts and Zynga.
Now the biggest questions are when Netflix might start to offer video games and whether it intends to charge a separate fee to play them or include them as part of its video streaming services.
In a research note, CFRA analyst Tuna Amobi called video games a logical complement to Netflix's vast library of TV series and films, helping to set the stage for eventual price increases that most subscribers will accept.
Greg Peters, Netflix's chief operating officer, told investors in April that video games could be another way to engage subscribers already immersed in the stories unfolding in the service's TV series and movies.
“We’re trying to figure out what are all these different ways that we can increase those points of connection, we can deepen that fandom," Peters said at the time. Verdu will be reporting to Peters in his new job.

Comic: Hawkeye #1
‘Excuse me, I’m here to make a desposit. Do you accept... sass?!’
Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero have some big shoes to fill. Fraction and Aja’s 2012-2015 run on Hawkeye has justly gone down as one of the greatest Marvel comics of recent years, and Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez’s All-New Hawkeye has continued the series’ affection for mixing street-level superhero antics with thoughtful and innovative storytelling. This time round, with Clint Barton sidestepping the limelight into Occupy Avengers, Kate Bishop is getting the attention she deserves, and Thompson and Romero are already showing signs that we have another Hawkeye classic in the making.
Any first issue has a lot of work to do, between introducing plot and setting up character relationships while telling a story that’s engaging on its own terms, but Thompson’s set-up is clear and brief, leaving more space for her wry humour and a plot that never feels like a pilot issue. Kate Bishop moving to the West Coast is a plot that’s been used before but it doesn’t feel rehashed - she’s always been the kind of character that moves around a fair bit, and after what we saw of their relationship in All-New Hawkeye and Clint’s actions in Civil War II, it’s understandable that Kate would want to head back to California - and in a solo setting she gets more space to shine. It feels like superhero to private investigator is an established career path these days (even Kate remarks in the issue that ‘super hero slash private eye is the new hotness’), with Spider-Woman giving up the lycra and the return of Jessica Jones, but again it feels like a natural step for a character that’s long been about helping the little people. A neat touch that helps to mark the book out is the use of targets around objects as Kate notices them, which is introduced early, and gives us a more literal sense of how Kate sees the world. Kate’s narration is bang-on character, too, and the dialogue is snappy enough to carry the plot at the pace it demands. Of course, not everything is as sunny as the Venice beach weather, but there’s a great control in the way the issue moves back and forth between seriousness and humour, plot and action.
Romero’s line art is wonderful too, resembling Aja’s work with Lemire without being derivative: the ligne claire simplicity leaves plenty of room for bold characterisation and clever visual storytelling. Romero seems at home with a huge variety of layouts, from nine-panel (or more) grids to action-packed double spreads, even a combination of the two in the middle of the issue, meaning that every page reads as dynamic without being tiring, and the pacing is varied nicely too. Something I particularly like is the full-width panels that represent Kate’s camera viewfinder, with most of the panel solid black around the cropped image; it’s a wonderfully simple technique, extremely reader-friendly, but feels fresh and playful too. I’m not familiar with much of Romero’s previous work, but I’ll be seeking it out soon enough, as I’m really interested to see what else he can do with this kind of quiet innovation.
Even as the book becomes a Kate Bishop solo series, this book really feels like a time production, with Thompson and Romero joined by stellar colourist Jordie Bellaire and letterer Joe Sabino. Bellaire and Romero were first teamed up on Doctor Strange Annual #1, and they make a great team, with Bellaire’s colours melding seamlessly with Romero’s linework. A colourless sample in the recent edition of Previews makes Bellaire’s mark all the more evident: the colours are by turns bright and Californian, then subtle and understated. The slow transition into evening across a grid in the centre of the book is a moment I’d single out as being indicative of the essential importance of a colourists to comics, conveying real-world information like time of day as well as smoothly transitioning the mood of the scene. It would have been easy to over-use the ‘Hawkeye purple’, especially with a protagonist out of costume most of the time, but Bellaire shows great restraint and skill in reserving it mostly for the Kate’s-eye targets. Sabino’s font choices also make a valuable contribution in their understatedness; sound effects are never overdone, but cleverly used, like the way the ‘eee’ of an alarm continues off-panel).
Something that gets mentioned more than once in the comic is Kate’s past as members of teams, both ‘Team Hawkeye’ and the Young Avengers, but with Marvel paying increasing attention to their under-appreciated female superheroes, the time has never been better for her to take over as the titular Hawkeye, and it’s a joy to discover that this looks to be a book that will be living up to the character’s potential. There’s a lot in this issue to like, and with several potential plot threads already in motion, Hawkeye will be heading straight to my pull list and staying there.

One Mother’s Story
By Betty Yancey
How Christine Leinonen has turned the loss of her son in the Pulse tragedy into something beautiful
On June 12th, Christine Leinonen got the news that no parent should ever have to receive. Her son, Christopher Andrew Leinonen, and his partner, Juan Ramon Guerrero, were among those killed at Pulse nightclub.  As the one-year anniversary of the horrific Pulse tragedy approaches, Christine sat down with Hotspots to talk about that night, the loss of her son and how the biggest mass shooting attack in U.S. history has changed not only “The City Beautiful” but her world.
Q: Christine, how are you coping with your loss?
A: I am coping with losing my only dear son, Christopher, by doing things that give me meaning and purpose. Of course, I grieve, lightly at times and other times with great difficulty. With the horrific nature, however, sometimes I simply have to be in a state of denial. The pain that the reality of my son’s death is potentially so severe, that to cope means to distract or busy myself. It’s hard to comprehend the level of evil it took for one person to kill and injure so many, so deliberately. But for the most part, I try to turn my son’s energy into good works. By doing that I’m turning the grief into good. I’ve been speaking out to give my son, whose voice was silenced, a voice.  I have not only been a gay-rights advocate, but an activist. Being a part of theDruProject.org has been tremendously helpful in my gay activism. ‘’ve also become a gun safety advocate. I’ve been speaking out in favor of common-sense gun protections.
Q: One year later, what is your perspective of this tragedy? A: One year later, I am very proud of the victims, families of victims, and friends of victims, who have turned our tragedy in a mission to not only survive, but to thrive in defiance of the evil. Some are going back to school for new careers, some are becoming political, some are becoming voices with various media, some are starting non-profits, some are becoming religiously active, writing books, getting tattoos, writing songs/raps.  [There are] many different ways to heal. However, the pain is still there. The reality that my son will not see the new Disney Star Wars movie, or go to the ride at Magic Kingdom, or get married, or laugh or dance ever, ever again, is heartbreaking. During those times, I cry, or just rest and relax and feel the pain, then move forward, once that feeling passes.  I know at the end of that pain, is a rainbow, and beyond that rainbow is a pot of gold. The feelings I get when I work through the grief are pretty wonderful. I get to see how it’s very probable that there will not be 284 victims and their loved ones in sadness, but 284 victims and their loved ones full of success and a renewed vigor for life. The killer succeeded in our loss of 49 loved ones and I want to do whatever I can to insure that no one else is lost as a result of his evil.
Q: If you could ask one question to the killer of these innocent lives, including your son’s, what would it be? A: I don’t have anything to say to the killer. I don’t think it’s even a good idea to address him in any fashion. Many of these mass shootings are a result of giving the killers notoriety. That’s what they want… attention, saying their name, becoming infamous.  Even my son’s killer mentioned the Boston Bomber when he was on the phone with the police. That makes it clear that he was seeking that same notoriety. I’ve adopted the Aurora victims’ loved ones position and I don’t address the killer in any way, shape or form. I don’t want to see any other families go through the pain of losing their loved one in a mass shooting because that future shooter was trying to emulate the Pulse shooter.
Q: How well has Orlando handled this tragedy in terms of response and support? A: The businesses of Orlando have been the best, most generous, kindest possible. Starting with the Baldwin Funeral Home that was so protective and giving my son and his friends a respectful, safe space to show their last respects. St. Luke’s in downtown Orlando, again so beautiful and protective space for our services. The parishioners all came out to volunteer to make sure my son’s services were second-to-none.  Then, you can’t say enough about Disney, Olive Garden, Starbucks and JetBlue, just to name a few of the big companies who came out in force to donate to the victims and their families. It was awesome! Whenever people ask me about how they can give I always say, instead of giving to a charity that may or may not be legitimate, just take your grandma to Olive Garden, or buy your kids Disney toys, or go to Disney World, buy your neighbor a cup of coffee, or fly JetBlue.  Just patronize the businesses that give back during a community tragedy, get a great product and let the companies donate when needed.
Q:  There are children out there who have been abandoned by their parents–rejected and cast out–because they are LGBT. You embraced your gay child! What words would you say to parents who discover their children are gay? A: To think there are parents in this world who don’t love their children exactly as they are is heartbreaking. The best advice I could give any parent is to love your child, period. They will grow up to be adults one day, and I can assure you, that if you live long enough, you will regret it if you did not provide your child with a safe and loving home… especially, if their personality is a little spicy, because they are gay or creative, or special, you will love them even more when they are young adults. The last couple of years of Christopher’s life I told him while I loved him as a child, and as a gay child, I grew to love him even more as an adult. Instead of the boring adult children of some of my friends, I had this vibrant, interesting, goofy, great kid. He was spicy!
Q: What has been the response to the Dru Project you have received? A: The Dru Project (thedruproject.org) has been growing and growing and has become this beautiful tribute and legacy of a great human being. Chris was kind, inclusive, giving, caring and fun. That’s the meaning of the Dru Project. It exemplifies his spirit. We hope to set up a role model Gay-Straight Alliance that can be replicated statewide or nationwide and pass through any school board’s scrutiny. And we are giving the first $1000.00 scholarship at our Launch Party at the Abbey on June 11, 2017, from 6-midnight.  So, we will not only have a model to use for any other school wishing to start up a GSA, we will be giving scholarships twice a year to students who are either gay or straight, but are inclusive designed.  We know that high schools that have clubs like a GSA have zero teenage suicides!  Teenagers need a place to fit in as they are growing from being children to adults. And they are all growing into a new world of sexuality. The worse thing we could do is to make them feel weird. So, the solution is to accept all and let them all feel like they are not only accepted, but loved and safe.
Q:  Besides the Dru Project, can you name some good that has come out of this terrible tragedy?  Not just in Orlando but all over? A: Lots of good has come out of this tragedy.  The gay community has activated not just to provide a safe gay area, or align with straight allies, but to demand protection. Our resistance, shown across the globe, is telling the world that we, as a people, will not go back. We are moving forward, with or without our governments. That we, the people of the world, own this planet. And we decide our rules and how we want our futures to evolve. It’s impressive to watch how active everyone has become.
Q: You have accomplished so much in this past year…speaking at the Democratic National Committee, confronting Marco Rubio at a town hall discussion, the creation of the Dru Project… Do you think your son would be proud? A: My son would be mind-blown at everything that has happened since his death. Speaking about him at the DNC, when before he died, he remarked to a friend at a gay wedding that he wondered if his mom, who he had never seen done any public speaking, would be able to give a toast to him at his own wedding. Or for him to learn that his own selfie doodles, ending up on his shirt design with his image in the Love Is Love comic book, in the middle of super heroes!
