Aaron McLean: storyteller. Stills, video, words.
Food has always been my passion. I spent many years working in restaurants, I love to cook for friends, and I love to grow the food that I cook for them. As such, I have been fortunate to spend the last twenty years combining my love of food with my love of storytelling. I have worked with many local and international publishers, illustrating a multitude of books and magazines, and have shot consistently for design and advertising. There is nothing I relish more than to pack my camera bag, as eager to travel to the studio to shoot a still life as I am to be on location: capturing the people, places and processes that surround food; in a winery during vintage, in a restaurant, on a fishing boat, in a cheese factory or on a farm.

Interview #494: Ryan Frigillana
Tumblr media
Ryan Frigillana is a Philippine-born lens-based artist living and working in New York. His work focuses on the fluidity of memory, intimacy, family identity, and visual culture, largely filtered through the lens of race and immigration. Embracing its plasticity, Frigillana explores photography’s relationship to context as a catalyst for thematic dialogue.
His first monograph, Visions of Eden, was published as two editions in 2020, and is held in the library collections of the MoMA, Getty Research Institute, and Smithsonian among others.
We spoke to find out more about Visions of Eden, his love for photobooks, and photography as a medium for introspection.
Tumblr media
Lee Chang Ming Ryan Frigillana
Thanks for agreeing to do this! As we’ve just arrived into the new year, I want to start by asking: how did you arrive at photography and how has your practice evolved so far? Your earlier work was anything from still life to street photography, but your recent work seems to deal with more personal themes.
It’s my pleasure; thank you for having this conversation with me! Wow, looking back at how I’ve arrived at this point makes me feel so grateful for this medium, and excited to think of where it will lead me from here. I came to photography somewhat late. I was initially studying to become a nurse and was set to start a career in that field, but I found myself unhappy with where I was going. My mother was a nurse and I know what goes into being one; it’s not an easy job, and I respect those who do it, but my heart wasn’t in it. I found photography as a creative outlet during that stage of my life, and I’ve clung onto it ever since.
My first exposure to photography (no pun intended) came in the form of street and photojournalism. I would borrow books from the library a lot, consuming works by Magnum and other photographers working in that tradition. At the time, it was all I knew so that’s what I tried to emulate. Even early on in my undergrad career, these modes of creation were reinforced by curriculum and by what I saw from my own peers. My still-life work branches off of that same sentiment: the only names that were ever thrown around by professors were Penn and Mapplethorpe, so that’s who I studied. Thankfully over the years, I’ve been able to broaden that perspective through my own research. Though I don’t necessarily pursue street or constructed still-lifes anymore for my personal work, I’d like to think my technical skills (in regard to timing, composition, light) owe a debt to those past experiences.
I suppose now I’m starting to explore how photography can be used as language, to communicate ideas and internal conflicts. I’m thinking more about the power of imagery, its authorship, its implications, and how photographs have shaped, and continue to shape, our reality. That’s where my work is headed at the moment.
Tumblr media
I liked how you mentioned photography as a language, which calls into question who we are speaking to when we make images and what kind of narrative we construct by putting photographs together.
In your work “Visions of Eden”, you trace your family’s journey as first-generation Filipino immigrants in America. I was quite struck by how you managed to link together original photography, archived materials and video stills. To me, with the original photography there was a sense of calm and clarity, perhaps in the composition. But with the archived material it was like peering through tinted glass, and the video stills felt like an unsteady memory. What was the editing process like for you and how did you decide what to include or exclude?
For me, editing is the hardest part about photography. Shooting is the enjoyable part of course because it can feel so cathartic. Sometimes when I shoot it feels almost like muscle memory in the sense that you see the world and you just react to it in a trained way. But with editing, it’s more of a cerebral exercise. More thought is involved when you have to deal with visual relationships, sequence, rhythm, and spacing, etc. The real creation of my work takes place in the editing process. That’s where the ingredients come together to form an identity.
When creating this identity, I not only have to think about what I want to say, but also how I want to say it. It’s like speaking; there are numerous ways you can communicate a single sentence. How are images placed in relation to one another? How large are they printed, or how much white space surrounds it? Are the images repeated? What’s on the following page? The preceding page? Is there text? How are they positioned on the spread? All of these little choices impact the tone of your work. And that’s not even mentioning tactile factors like paper stock or cover material. I think that’s why I have such a deep love for photobooks because 1) they’re physical objects and 2) someone has obsessed over every aspect of that object.
I’m aware that my photographs lately have a quiet, detached, somewhat stripped-down quality to them. I think that’s just a subconscious rejection of my earlier days shooting a lot of street where I was constantly seeking crowded frames and complexity in my compositions. As I’ve grown older, I realize less is more and if I can do more by saying less, that’s even better. Now, the complexity I seek lies in the work as a whole and how all these little parts can form something fluid and layered, and not easily definable.
For Visions of Eden, I wanted the work to feel somewhat syncopated and wandering in thought. That meant finding a balance between my quiet static photographs and the movement and energy of the video stills, or balancing the coldness of the illustrations with the warmth of the family snapshots. The work needed to be cohesive but have enough ambiguity for it to take life in someone else’s imagination. Peoples’ lived experiences in regard to immigration and religion are so complex that they can’t be narrated in any one definitive way. Visions of Eden, hopefully, is a rejection of that singularity.
Tumblr media
Yes, there’s definitely something special and intimate about flipping through a photobook! For your monograph, you recently released a second edition which is different from your first (redesigned, added images, etc.). Why did you decide to make it different? Was the editing mainly a solitary process?
The first edition was a partially hand-made object. Illustrations were printed on translucent vellum paper and then tipped into the gutter of the book. When you flip through the pages, those vellum sheets would overlap over certain images, creating a collage-like effect. That was my original concept for this book. Doing this, however, was so laborious and time consuming, and not to mention expensive! Regretfully, I wound up making only twenty copies of that first edition. I wanted the work shared with a wider audience so that’s why I decided to publish a second run.
The latest edition is more of a straight-forward production without the vellum paper. With this change in design, I had to reconfigure the layout. I took liberties in swapping out some images or adding new ones altogether. Also, a beautiful afterword was contributed by my friend, artist, writer, and curator Efrem Zelony-Mindell. I still feel so fortunate and grateful to have had my work seen and elevated by their words in my book.
For the most part, yes editing is quite a solitary process for me. But there does come a point when I feel it’s ready, where I share the work with a few trusted people. It’s always nice to have that outer support system. Much of Visions of Eden was created during my time in undergrad school so I had all sorts of feedback from peers and professors which I’m grateful for. But in the end, as the author, you ultimately have the final say in your work.
Tumblr media
Given that Eden is a starting point and metaphor in the work, I was thinking about ideas of gardens, (forbidden) fruit, and movement of people.
How do you view yourself in relation to your place of birth? In your series, I see the most direct links in the letters, old photos where tropical foliage is present in the background, and the photo of the jackfruit (perhaps the only tropical fruit in this series).
I came to America when I was very young, about five years old. For my family and for many other families still living in the Philippines, America is seen as a sort of ideological Eden: a land of milk and honey, of wealth and excess. We all know that’s far from the truth. Every Eden has a caveat, a forbidden tree. Which leads me to ask: as an immigrant living in this country, what fruits were never intended for me?
I honestly don’t remember much about my childhood in the Philippines aside from fleeting memories of my relatives, the sounds of animals, the smell of rain and earth, the taste of my grandmother’s cooking. The identity that I carry with me now as a Filipino is not so much tied to the physical geography of a place but rather it is derived from a way of life, from shared stories, in the values we hold dear, passed on from generation to generation. This is a warm flame that lives on in me to this day as I write these words thousands of miles away from where I came.
Photographs have a way of shaping our memory and our relationship to the past, which in turn affects how we engage with the present. The family photographs and letters used in my book act as anchors in a meandering journey. They serve as landmarks that I can return to whenever I feel lost or need assurance so far away from “home”. They give me the comfort and affirmation that I need to navigate a space where I never really felt I belonged. The spread in my book that you mentioned—the jackfruit on one side, and the Saran-wrapped apple on the preceding page—was a reference to my duality as both Filipino and American. It’s a reminder and an acknowledgment that I am a sum of many things, of many people who have shaped me. If I flourish in life, it’s because my roots were nourished by love.
Tumblr media
I like how you mentioned photos as anchors or landmarks. Isn’t that why we create and photograph? To mark certain points in our lives and to envision possible futures, like a cartographer mapping an inner journey. Do you feel like you and your relationships with those you photographed changed through the process of making your works?
When my parents took pictures of our family, it wasn’t done solely in the name of remembrance; it also served as an affirmation of ourselves and our journey—a celebration. Every birthday, vacation, school ceremony, or even the seemingly insignificant events of daily life were all photographed or video-taped as a way of saying to ourselves, “Here we are. Look how far we’ve come. Look at the life we’ve made. And here’s the proof”.
Now, holding a camera and photographing my family through my own lens still carries all of that celebratory joy, but with so much more possibility. Before I really took photography seriously, I never realized its potential as a medium for introspection, but that’s ultimately what it has become for me. In taking pictures of my family, I not only clarify my own feelings about them, but the act of photography itself informs and builds on my relationship with each person. The camera is not a mere recording device, but a tool for understanding, processing, and even expressing love...or resentment. Though I may not be visible in my pictures, my presence is there: in my proximity, my gaze, my focus.
Does all of this impact my relationships? Absolutely. Photographing another person willingly always demands some degree of trust and vulnerability from both sides. There’s a silent dialogue that occurs which feels like an exchange of secrets. I think that’s why I often don’t feel comfortable photographing other people unless we’re very close. Usually my family is open enough to reveal themselves to me, other times what they give can feel quite guarded. That’s a constant negotiation. After the photograph is made though, nobody ever emerges the same person because each of us has relinquished something, no matter how small.
Tumblr media
Being self-reflexive in photography is so important. I agree it should be a constant negotiation, but it’s something that bothers me these days – the power dynamic between the photographer and photograph, particularly for personal and documentary projects. More significantly, after the photograph has been made, who is really benefiting. But I guess if we are sensitive to that then perhaps we can navigate that tricky path and find a balance.
Right, finding that balance is key and sometimes there are no clear-cut answers. That power dynamic is something I always have to be mindful of. As the photographer, you are exercising a certain role and position. At the end of the day, you’re the one essentially “taking” what you need and walking away. There’s an inherent violence or aggression in the act of taking someone’s picture, no matter how well-intended it may be. This aggression carries even greater weight when working, as you say, in a genre like documentary where representation is everything.
I remember an undergrad professor of mine, Nadia Sablin, introducing me to the work of Shelby Lee Adams—particularly his Appalachian Legacy series. Adams spent twenty-five years documenting the disadvantaged Appalachian communities in his home state of Kentucky, visiting the same families over a long period of time. Though the photographs are beautifully crafted, they pose many questions in regard to exploitation, representation, and the aestheticization of suffering. He is or was, after all, an artist thriving and profiting off of these photographs. Salgado is another that comes to mind. This was the first time I really stopped to think about the ethics of image-making. Who is benefitting from it all?
I think the search for this balance is something each photographer has to reckon with personally. Though each situation may vary with different factors that have to be weighed, and context that must be applied, you can always ask yourself these same ever-pertinent questions: am I representing people in a dignified way, and what are my intentions with these images? Communication (listening), building relationships, acknowledging your power, and respecting the people you photograph are all foundational things to consider when exercising your privilege with the camera.
Tumblr media
Well said! The process of making photographs can be tricky to navigate yet rewarding. Any upcoming projects or ideas? What’s keeping you busy these days?
Oh, let’s just say I’m constantly juggling 3-4 ideas in my head at any given time, but ninety percent of the time they don’t ever lead to anything finished haha. This past year has been tough on everyone I’m sure. I’ve been dealing a lot with personal loss and grief and the compounded isolation brought on by the pandemic, so for months I’ve been making photographs organically as a subconscious response to these internal struggles. It’s more of an exploration of grief itself as a natural phenomenon and force—like time or gravity. Grief is something everyone will experience in life and each of us deals with it differently, but in the end we have to let it run its course. I see these photographs as a potential body of work that could materialize as a zine or book one day, so we’ll see where that goes.
Other than that, I’ve been working on an upcoming collaboration project with Cumulus Photo. Speaking of which, I saw your photograph featured in their latest zine, running to the edge of the world. Congrats on that! It’s beautiful. But yeah, just trying my best to keep busy and sane, and improving myself any way I can.
Tumblr media
Thanks! Looking forward to your upcoming projects! Last question: any music to recommend?
I feel like my answer to this question can vary by the week. I go through phases where I exhaust whole albums on repeat until I get tired of them. So I’ll leave you with the two currently on my rotation: Angles by The Strokes, and Screamadelica by Primal Scream.
Thank you for your time!
Thank you for a lovely discourse. I had a lot of fun!

Curating your social media feed to decrease negativity
K so we all know what a downer social media can be sometimes, and yet it can be an important way to connect with people on the internet. SO here are some tips for curating your social media feed so it’s less likely to be a suckfest that makes you lose faith in humanity.
Knowledge is power: follow people who teach you stuff
Educators, libraries, history buffs, computer programmers, anyone who talks about things you’re interested and/or want to learn more about. Some of my favorites: @othmeralia -- This is the blog of a chemistry museum in Philadelphia. I visited there when I was 18 and loved it and got SO EXCITED when I found them on tumblr a few years later. @fuckyeahhistorycrushes -- Awesome historical figures you may have never heard of. Often highlights attractive folks. @thescalex -- science dude and writer (also a good friend of mine). He often posts cool science photos and videos. He and I take credit for each other’s usernames. @jstor -- yes that place where you hunt down academic sources while writing papers in college. Sounds like they’d be a boring blog to follow? WRONG. This blog is gold. @gladyourenothere -- pics of vintage postcards and what people of bygone days wrote on them @yesterdaysprint’s -- one of my absolute FAVE blogs, featuring bizarre and hilarious headlines and newspaper clips from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. @smithsonianlibraries -- exactly what it sounds like: cool stuff from the Smithsonian’s libraries. Lots of art and books. @beautifulmedievalmanuscripts -- also exactly what it sounds like. Loads of pictures of really pretty illuminated manuscripts. @histsciart -- very cool historical science art @ahencyclopedia -- a history encyclopedia with lots of cool pictures @sineads, @thecostumevaultblog, @historicaldress -- all really great historical fashion blogs. @digitalpubliclibraryofamerica -- more historical pictures! (I have a type). Could be anything from pictures of historical figures to digitized ephemera from decades past.
Art, cuz pretty
There are LOADS of great artists/art blogs on social media in all of the mediums. Sculptors, potters, painters, photographers, comic/book illustrators, crazy cake decorators, calligraphers, you name it. Not only does following them make your feed a happier place, it can help get the artists more exposure. Some I like: Painters/illustrators/etc: @theartofanimation -- this blog features art from various artists. @cloverkin -- I have four of her prints hanging in my house @locirodrawsstuff -- and two of hers @mienar, @heikala, @prinsomnia -- illustrators and comic artists @welovewaves -- tbh I’m not sure if this is one artist or mulitple, but the art ranges from cool to trippy Photographers (mostly of nature and stuff): @juliamstarr @photocosma @amcapturing  @magic-spelldust @xxluminescence -- a blog that focuses on pictures of cool lamps + other light sources @frederick-ardley Writers: @maggie-stiefvater @neil-gaiman Sculptors/potters/clayworkers/cool thing makers (it should be noted that I also have a Type when it comes to sculpture blogs so please seek out what fits your preferences):  Cutesy clay critter types: @bon-appeteats, @plushlikecreaturesgallery, @quequinoxart, @rivalmit, @emilysculpts, @evgenyhontor, @mijbilcreatures Potters: @foxtail-pottery, @andrewclarkpottery, @moolric-ceramics, @jtceramics, @skeletaldropkick (and yes their pottery is just as cool/quirky as their name). @genuslocii -- Outdoor sculptures and street art @sculpture-center -- features lots of different sculptors
Art curators/bloggers/museums @sophiegunnol -- modern stuff @almostarts -- weird/cool art, lots of it 3D @frickfineartslibrary -- a library focusing on art @didoofcarthage -- historial stuff ….and there are a lot more but this section is big enough so I’ll stop here. Point is there are people out there making your favorite kinds of art and they have great Tumblrs.
CASTLES
Because whose social media feed doesn’t need more castles? I recommend: @castlesandmedievals -- cool castles from all around the world @bibliotheca-sanctus -- this is actually libraries but libraries that are like in gorgeous palaces and shit (as a librarian I also have a bias towards libraries)
Follow the funnies
Humor is always a good way to brighten the day, or your dash. @effinbirds -- Old-timey illustrations of birds with rude captions @badsciencejokes -- all the science puns @outofcontextdnd -- really weird things people say while playing RPGs, only without the context of why they were said (not that the context makes some of them any better).
Feed your inner bookworm
Lots of folks have great book-based blogs. Some focus on photography, others on reviews, usually it’s a good mix of both. Some of my faves: @theboywhoreadsbooks -- pretty pictures and book recs. Includes LGBT+ book recs. @paperfury -- ALL THE PRETTY RAINBOW BOOKSHELVES. @coffee-bookss -- if you like the books and coffee/tea aesthetic, this blog is for you.
This list is only THE TINIEST SLIVER OF A FRACTION of the cool stuff here on Tumblr (and clearly reflects my bias toward history and art). Reblog and tag the blogs that make your feed better! Note: while this post gives examples of folks to follow here on Tumblr, the same principles apply for other social media sites. On Facebook I like Great Big Story and Atlas Obscura to get posts about historical + present day cool people and places, and on Twitter I like Maggie Stiefvater (for her wonderful sense of humor) and the Library/Librarian of Congress (for all their cool information about all sorts of stuff). Lemme know if I should do a post about cool folks to follow on those platforms too. Go forth and improve your social media experience!

Dylan Farrow Would Like to Reintroduce Herself
Tumblr media
Coat, Max Mara.
PHOTOGRAPHED BY VALERIE CHIANG
Scouring the fantasy section of her favorite bookstore near the Connecticut farm where she grew up, Dylan Farrow would pick out anything that “promised me dragons,” she says. She loved the fire and destruction of mythical beasts; conspiracy theories involving families plotting against their own kin; and the way women, children, and other small creatures wielded magical powers that made them stronger in those make-believe worlds than they were in our own. “I think it started out as an escape route,” she says. “For any fans of fantasy, whether they’re in my position or not, it’s fun escapism, a way to step outside of yourself and your problems, and, I don’t know, think about dragons for a while.” She pauses to clarify: “I’m not trying to escape who I am—I’m fine with who I am. I mean, it’s taken me a while to get here, but I can say with [some] degree of certainty that I’m okay.”
Still, the first time we talked, late last year, it hadn’t quite sunk in for her that she had her own debut young adult fantasy fiction novel, Hush, on bookshelves like the ones she’d perused as a teenager. In a lot of ways, the release of Hush has served as a debut for the 35-year-old author as well, in her new life as a full-time writer and working mother, defined by no one but herself. After all, for most of her life, Dylan has been known mostly in relation to the salacious scandals that have swirled around her famous family. She became a public figure not by choice, but rather because she was Mia Farrow’s daughter, or Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ronan Farrow’s sister. “I don’t feel like I have a father,” she says, but at one point her father was Woody Allen, Mia’s boyfriend of about a decade, who’d adopted Dylan as a child. Later, of course, Allen would go on to have an affair with, and then marry, her sister, Soon-Yi Previn. “There’s no support group for people whose sisters marry their fathers,” she says. “Or is he my brother-in-law? And is she my stepmom? I’ve got to joke about it!”
Tumblr media

Then there’s the other scandal that she’ll likely never fully escape, now the subject of an HBO investigative documentary series, Allen v. Farrow. In 1992, when Dylan was seven—the same year the Soon-Yi affair blew up—she told her mother that Allen had taken her into an attic crawl space and sexually molested her, as Mia would testify in the ensuing custody battle. It was part of a pattern that Dylan later said went on for as long as she could remember, of Allen getting into bed with her wearing only his underwear, or putting his head in her naked lap. The custody fight was vicious and tore their family apart, estranged Allen from most of his children permanently, and became such a public tabloid spectacle that Dylan remembers having to be sneaked out of the back of her New York City apartment building with a blanket over her head so she could get to school without being snapped by the paparazzi. She still has PTSD from the ordeal.
A report by the Yale-New Haven Hospital Child Sexual Abuse Clinic, whose methods the judge in the custody case questioned as unreliable, concluded that Dylan was not sexually abused and that Dylan was either disturbed and made it up or had been manipulated by her mother. The judge gave Mia full custody, finding that the testimony proved “that Mr. Allen’s behavior toward Dylan was grossly inappropriate and that measures must be taken to protect her.” Allen appealed, but the appellate court agreed with the trial judge’s custody ruling. Although it gave more weight to the Yale-New Haven report, the appeals court found that the overall evidence, while “inconclusive,” “suggest[ed] that the abuse did occur.” New York State child welfare investigators later announced that they’d found no credible evidence of abuse. Several months after the custody decision was announced, a Connecticut state’s attorney announced that he had probable cause to criminally charge Allen but was declining to file charges to spare Dylan the trauma of a court appearance. Criminal charges have never been filed against Allen in the matter, and he continues to maintain his innocence. (Allen declined a request to comment for this article, but he has vociferously and repeatedly denied having molested her, and has pointed to investigations that cleared him of wrongdoing.)
“Believe it or not, the stuff that I wrote about in that essay does not encompass the entirety of my existence.”
If you know Dylan’s name now, though, it’s probably because in 2014, well before the #MeToo movement, she wrote a New York Times essay about that abuse, calling out Hollywood actors and asking whether they’d be so quick to celebrate Allen’s work had their own daughter been “led into an attic” by him. It wasn’t until her brother Ronan helped expose the misdeeds of Harvey Weinstein that Dylan’s accusations were given much credence. Dylan had emerged from obscurity to become a staunch advocate for survivors of sexual assault. But now she’s ready to emerge from that as simply a writer. “Believe it or not, the stuff that I wrote about in that essay does not encompass the entirety of my existence,” she says. “It’s a small part of 35 years of living.”
In fact, Dylan isn’t even Dylan Farrow’s name anymore. When she was eight, she changed it to a name she prefers to keep private, in order to psychologically distance herself from the events of those tumultuous years. But she’s been using Dylan as a sort of pen name, starting with the 2014 essay, to avoid confusion given that Dylan is the name in all the court documents. Among close friends and family, though, she says, “No one’s called me Dylan since I was 10.”

“I’m not trying to escape who I am. I’m fine with who I am”, says Dylan. “I mean, it’s taken me a while to get here, but I can say with some degree of certainty that I’m okay.”

Reading Hush, it’s impossible not to see Dylan’s story in its themes. The book centers on Shae, a girl who is dealing with a lot and doesn’t really have time for boys. She’s “short but strong,” Dylan says, and she’s also doggedly determined to ferret out the truth—even as adults tell her it’s all in her head. The world she’s living in is falling apart, stricken by drought and a pandemic that Dylan swears she dreamed up well before 2020. A despotic leadership class wields magic to spread fake news, earn tithes, and control the populace. The written word, the people are told, will kill them; the pandemic spreads through ink. And it is only in trying to solve the murder of someone she loves that Shae finds out that she, too, can wield magic. But can she learn how to use it fast enough, when the truth is slipping away and she’s being gaslighted by powerful forces, causing her to question what she knows? Dylan says that of course the themes are partially based on her life, but readers shouldn’t try to draw too many direct parallels. “As I keep having to assert,” she says, “I do know the difference between fiction and reality.”

Fantasy writers like “Ursula K. Le Guin, Madeleine L’Engle, and Susan Cooper were all a big deal in our house,” Ronan says, adding that his older sister also “had an abiding love of anime.”

After being awarded custody in 1993, Mia moved her large family, filled with biological and adopted children, many of them with disabilities, from Manhattan to their country house in Connecticut. Mia was determined to give the kids “the real farm experience,” Dylan says. They had horses, chickens, goats, and a cow who got lonely and tried having sex with everything, including one of the Farrow siblings’ wheelchairs. “It was a busy, noisy life full of children and animals,” Mia says.
Dylan now maintains a happy pandemic pod with her own family on that same farm, 88 acres with hiking and horse trails and a lake. She’s calling via Zoom from a home office with nothing but greenery and sunlight outside her window. Dylan, her husband (she asked that his name not be published), her four-year-old daughter Evangeline (whose name is already all over Mia’s Instagram), their pug Luna, and their English bulldog Nova stay in one house. Her brother Fletcher, who works in tech, and his wife and two daughters live in another. Their mother has a third. When we talked, Ronan and his fiancé, Jon Lovett of Pod Save America, had recently joined them from the West Coast and were staying with Mia.
Dylan’s earliest exposure to fantasy, she says, was a bedtime ritual of her mom reading The Hobbit to the kids. “My mom, I sometimes forget, is actually a really talented actress,” she says. “So she would read the bejesus out of this book, and it was the most epic thing I had ever heard. My mom would narrate and do all the voices. To this day, her rendition of Gollum is like canon tome.” At around age 11, Dylan wrote stories to read aloud to her younger siblings. “She kept them so enthralled,” Mia says. Ronan, two years her junior, says they both read a lot growing up. “Great women writers of fantasy loomed large for both of us—Ursula K. Le Guin, Madeleine L’Engle, and Susan Cooper were all a big deal in our house,” he says. “Dylan had an abiding love of anime, which I only dabbled in.” (Dylan says she also had an abiding love of Lance Bass of *NSync.)

“I loved to play make-believe with Ronan,”Dylan says. “We’d play dress-up, and I’d sometimes let him play Barbies with me, if I was feeling charitable.” They collected pewter Dungeons & Dragons figurines and created a civilization for them. “We developed some pretty elaborate lore,” Ronan says. In her teenage years, Dylan wrote and illustrated a Game of Thrones–style novel, clocking in at “530-something” pages, that she says “was not fit for human consumption.” Its audience of one was her little sister, Quincy. There were dragons. The main character was an elf. There was a war. Some of it took place in space. “Every concept and every crazy notion I needed to express got chucked into the pot, and it went in a million directions and it was garbage,” she says. “I mean, my sister loves it to this day. She still talks about it.” Back then, as an author, Dylan felt supremely confident. “If I thought it was bad, I wouldn’t have written 500 pages,” she says, laughing.
The court hearings of Dylan’s childhood were, in many ways, a prosecution of her so-called “overactive” imagination. She’d described being in the attic with the “dead heads”—“which was literally because I didn’t know the word for mannequin,” she says. “I knew that people thought that I was using my imagination to tell lies,” she continues, but somehow that never affected her desire to write. Nor did Allen being a famous writer influence her in any way, “although it’s probably the reason I never wrote about New York and jazz and May–December romances,” she says.
In her senior year at Bard College, where she was majoring in art and Asian studies, Dylan decided to sign up for an online dating site associated with The Onion. This was in 2007, well before Tinder, “when dinosaurs roamed the Earth,” she says. At first, she wasn’t having much luck. “I signed up and there was, like, an influx of fifty-somethings being like, ‘Age ain’t nothing but a number, right?’ ” she says. “I’m like, ‘You’re barking up the wrong tree.’ ” Then she came across this “adorable” recent graduate living in New York City who described himself as a geek. “So I did the thing I’ve never done before or since, and I sent him a message and flirted with the guy,” she says. “I said, ‘You didn’t mention you were a cute geek.’ Winky-face emoji. I’m turning bright red telling you this.”
They met up at Grand Central Terminal and got pie and coffee, and the conversation never stopped flowing. After graduation, she moved in with him in New York. “He tried to kick me out,”she says. “He told me, ‘You’re finally independent. You should have the experience of having your own place, paying your own rent.’ I’m like,‘That’s really responsible of you, but that sounds like a lot of work.’ ” Dylan got a job as a production assistant at CNN, working the phones and the copy machine at the Nancy Grace show, mainly so she could continue to crash with her boyfriend. She was eventually laid off. “Journalism, it turns out, wasn’t for me. Wrong member of my family,” she says. When her boyfriend got a job offer he couldn’t turn down in South Florida and asked her to join him, she agreed. “In the back of my head, I’m thinking, ‘Well, I’d better get an engagement ring out of this,’ ” she says. And she did. They’ve been together for 14 years, married for 10.

Dylan has been writing stories to entertain her younger siblings since age 11. “She kept them so enthralled,” Mia says.

Dylan spent the following six years in Broward County, living a relatively normal life. She worked for a weight-loss center, and later found a job as a graphic designer. Back at home, she’d write fantasy stories well into the early hours. “That was where I was finding my happy place,” she says. “I sat down with my husband at one point and I said, ‘Look, I spend every morning sitting in my car giving myself this pep talk, like, Today is going to be over at some point. And I can’t live like this.’ ” She did some soul-searching and realized she wanted to become a full-time writer. “My husband was like, ‘Okay, this is important to you. We’ll make it work.’ He’s a champ.”
So she sat down and wrote a novel. Not Hush, but a “casserole” of ideas. “It was about necromancers, set in a Spanish Inquisition–like setting,” she says. “It was maybe a little anti-religion; they were heretics.” Her protagonist was too old for YA, but the story didn’t exactly work for a broader fantasy audience either. “I wound up learning a lot about, you know, what sort of book gets picked up by publishers,” she says, laughing.
Around 2014, Dylan and her husband decided to move back northeast to Connecticut. Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine had come out to critical praise the previous year, garnering two Golden Globe and three Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay for Allen. The sexual assault allegation, the custody battle, and leaving Manhattan had all happened in 1992 and 1993. Dylan had started fourth grade in Connecticut, thinking she’d never have to worry about any of it again, except for the rare occasions when her mom went to court. “I sort of treated it as out of sight, out of mind, and I did that for about 20 years,” she says. “But then he was up for an Academy Award, and no one cared.
We were in the process of relocating, and I snapped and went crazy and the essay happened.” When she told someone close to her that she was thinking about speaking out, he said, “Well, why? Nobody cares.” When she told her therapist that “maybe this is something, someday, you know, nebulously, abstractly I’m considering,” he told her that it was a terrible idea and she’d undo all the progress she’d made.“Obviously, I didn’t listen to those people,” she says. “The thing is, in a lot of ways, they were wrong. But in a lot of [other] ways, they were right. In 2014, nobody really did give a crap. And I did undo all the progress I’d made.”
The essay caused a stir, but Allen kept his Academy Award nomination, and the star of Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett, won the Oscar for Best Actress. Meanwhile, Dylan had opened Pandora’s box. “I had to develop an entirely new skill set with different coping mechanisms based around having spoken out and the aftermath of that,” she says. “The difference was, I was doing this on my own terms.” She still struggles at times, “but on the whole, it does feel healthier to cope with it on that level rather than just ignore it. I think it’s also more helpful to the people in my life: my husband, my family, my friends. They know what’s going on now. I’m not just freaking out because I saw some random movie poster. There’s a method to the madness.”
Tumblr media

Mia can see a huge difference. “She’s evolved from being a shy child to being much more assertive. And a lot of it has to do with coming out with her personal story and feeling less like a victim,” she says. “I do know that as a mother, my job, among other jobs, is and always has been to support her in whatever she needs. I’ve stood by her all these years, and I will continue to do so.”
Dylan has only seen three of Allen’s movies: 1973’s Sleeper (“As a kid, I think it was framed as, ‘Do you want to see Daddy eat a rubber glove?’ and I was like, ‘Oh yeah!’ ”) and two others, Alice and The Purple Rose of Cairo, neither of which Allen appears in onscreen. According to IMDb, Dylan appears in Alice, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and New York Stories, “which is really trippy,” she says, “because I don’t remember being in them.” For her Alice appearance, she visited her mom on set, ran up to hug her and say “hi,” and then ran off. She remembers the moment, but not being filmed. She also remembers being at the circus with two kids who kept putting their Cracker Jack in her popcorn. Years later, when she saw the movie, she realized she was watching herself. “It was weird, like seeing my memory, but with different people,” she says.
Triggers are all around her, and whether they’ll set her off depends on how she is doing emotionally that day. She’ll freeze up if she’s scrolling through a news feed and sees a face with thick glasses, or if she overhears jazz music. In the past, such things could leave her curled up in a fetal position. During a 2018 TV interview with Gayle King, Dylan burst out crying after being shown a recording of Allen denying the allegation. It hasn’t gotten better overnight—“It’s a process,” she says—but Dylan has been steadily improving since speaking out. “I try to take the mindset that I have a 100 percent success rate of getting through every single one of the panic attacks I’ve ever had; none of them have killed me.” In some ways, she says, it’s been a blessing to be Evangeline’s mother in this fraught time, to have to care for a small child and to know she has to hold it together for her. “My top priority is obviously making sure that my daughter is always safe, healthy, and loved,” she says. Asked what she says when others assert that Allen was just acting as a doting father, Dylan replies: “Let him watch your kid.”
It still baffles her when Allen’s fans come after her on Twitter, saying she’s lying. “This is something that I’m literally telling you happened to me. Who are you to say, ‘No, it didn’t’? I was there, you weren’t. Go away.” Still, it’s amazing to her that some people peddle the idea that her mother brainwashed her to believe she was molested and also to have PTSD from it—something she says Mia would have needed “military-grade torture equipment” to pull off. “It’s crazy that for some people, the idea that I was brainwashed is somehow easier to swallow than child sexual abuse,” she says.

“I guess I’m just way more vindictive than anybody gave me credit for,” Dylan says. “And I say that because it’s not entirely a bad thing. Vindictive women can get stuff done.”
VALERIE CHIANG
Dylan didn’t tell her mother and Ronan that she was going to write the essay until she already knew she was going to publish it. “I kind of wanted to wait until there were no take-backsies before I really discussed it with them, because I wasn’t sure how they were going to react,” she says. It was the first time she’d told Ronan what had happened in detail. “And he started crying, which I didn’t really expect,” she says. “He’s not super sentimental.” Even for Ronan, #MeToo warrior that he is now, there was a period of adjustment, of separating the family desire to put the past behind them with his sister’s need to expose her wounds in order to heal them. They talked often and at length, and in 2016, when Allen’s film Café Society was opening the Cannes Film Festival, Ronan wrote his own essay supporting his sister’s claims for The Hollywood Reporter. It was loud and splashy, and dominated all the press for Allen’s film. And in its own way, it led to Ronan chasing down the stories of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults. “Dylan was absolutely a voice of conscience on this issue,” Ronan said by email. “I learned a lot, watching her come forward with her story, and maintain it consistently, year after year—even when I and others around her weren’t sure it was worth the blowback.”
“Without Ronan’s support, I probably would’ve felt completely adrift,” Dylan says. “He’s one of the most important people in my life.” What she didn’t realize was just how important those conversations would be to her brother and others, through his work.
“I thought he was just, like, calling me. It wasn’t until I read his book that I realized I was actually having this huge impact on him.” It bothered her, though, that her essay from 2014 “was kind of brushed off and ignored or sidelined or outright stomped into the dust,” but when her brother said the exact same thing two years later, suddenly people’s ears perked up. “I got salty at Ronan, because I was like, ‘Do people really need a white man to say the exact same thing to get people to listen?’ ”
So in 2017, in the wake of #MeToo, she wrote a second incendiary essay, this time for the Los Angeles Times, which questioned how all these men could be taken to task, but Woody Allen was still making movies. “[At age seven,] I wasn’t, obviously, given a platform, and I was not in an emotional state to take advantage of a platform. I was literally a child,” she says. “And it’s easy when you are a white man with a considerable amount of clout, power, and wealth to silence a voice like that, pin the blame on my mom, and spin the story for 20-plus years.” The good thing, though, is that Dylan has begun to recognize her own power. “I guess I’m just way more vindictive than anybody gave me credit for,” she says. “And I say that because it’s not entirely a bad thing. Vindictive women can get stuff done.”
“I never thought I would be writing about a dystopia in a climate where that would feel relatable.”
In the end, Hush hasn’t been an escape route for Dylan, but rather a way forward out of the darkness that has clouded her existence for so long. After her first novel about the necromancers failed to find a publisher, she decided to start over, “drawing on the themes and ideas that I was seeing percolating in the world around me,” she says. In 2018, as now, fake news and propaganda were hot topics, as was a general distrust of the system. “I never thought I would be writing about a dystopia in a climate where that would feel relatable,” she says. When Mia read it, she saw her daughter in Shae. “I see Dylan’s courage against monstrous thoughts and monstrous people and powerful foes,” she says. “Being disbelieved is part of the assault.” While she says she can’t speak for her daughter, Mia thinks that in writing the book, Dylan was able to reckon with her past in a way that was “bearable,” by creating a story “which is and isn’t about her.”

As of mid-January, Dylan was nearly finished writing the sequel to Hush, with only half of the final chapter and the epilogue to go. She’s found that it’s progressing faster and is more enjoyable this time around, because she no longer has the terror of being a debut novelist who, before this, “was a known quantity for something very specific—and something with a lot of morbid curiosity around it.”
She knows that curiosity will always be there. “I can’t completely disentangle myself from it,” she says. And the publicity for this book has meant a lot of “talking about the thing that I like least in the world. It’s always going to be the elephant in the room.” But no amount of fear can take away the pleasure of holding her book in her hands, and knowing that someone else might happen across it at a bookstore and take it off the shelf. Her simple hope is that “somebody will read it and connect to it and enjoy it and maybe not take it so seriously.”

The interviews touch on many of the hallmarks of successful aging such as exercise, diet, reminiscence, intergenerational involvement and mentoring, healthy acceptance and management of the physical changes that come with growing older, stress reduction, family relationships, long-term friendships, a sense of community, being of service to others, spirituality, an elemental connection with nature, and joyful peak experiences. The program leaves viewers with a renewed sense of the human potential of later life and provides a powerful alternative to the largely negative view of the capacities of older people held by many in our youth dominated society.

The quality of the results, consequently, depends upon the caliber of the procedures which are implemented as well as the attention with which they're implemented. The reader may refer to the Methods section: (a) to develop into confident the experiments have already been correctly performed (b) since the manual for replicating the experiments, and (c)) to understand how to perform new procedures. It's very important to remember object (b). Since science addresses the objective properties of their bodily and biological universe, it's a simple axiom that those properties are independent from the scientist that reported them. Everybody ought to have the ability to measure or observe exactly the very same properties within malfunction, if they perform the identical experiment using the very same materials and processes. In science, a person does the exact same experiment by repeating the experiment that's been explained in the Methods section. Therefore, somebody can simply repeat an experiment correctly if all of the pertinent information of the experimental procedures are clearly explained. 1 ,3. The following information is crucial to include under descriptive headings, and is usually presented in story form. A comprehensive list of all of the substances used in the experiments and, even if significant, their source ought to be explained. The reader should understand as much as essential concerning every one of the substancesnonetheless, it's imperative not to include extraneous details. Along with describing the physical setup of this experimentation, it could be handy to include diagrams or photographs from the report to further illustrate the experimental layout. A comprehensive description of every process done from the reported experiment, and justification as to why a specific method was selected to most efficiently answer the study question also needs to be included. The reader would also have to be aware of the levels to that the zebrafish were exposed, the way the scientist detected that the impacts of the chemical exposure (e.g. microscopic changes in construction, changes in swimming behaviour), pertinent security and toxicity concerns, how results were measured, and also the way the scientist ascertained if the data/results were considerably different in experimental and unexposed control animals (statistical techniques. Pupils must take good care and effort to compose a decent Methods section since it's a vital part of the successful communication of scientific findings. The information located in the Processes section serves as foundation for understanding these descriptions and doesn't have to be duplicated. For every different experimentation, the writer might want to offer a subtitle and, additionally, one or more introductory sentences which describes the reason for performing the experiment. In a feeling, this info is an extension of the Introduction since it makes the discussion to the reader why it's necessary to perform the experiment. The Intro is more prevalent; that text is more unique. When the reader knows the attention of this experiment, the author should restate the theory to be examined or the data sought from the experimentation. It's very important to know whether it influences organisms which are generally found in dirt. We chose to use  worms as a test organism as they're important members of this soil community. In the initial experiment, we examined the impact of this chemical on burrowing activity. In reporting experimental design, it's very important to identify the independent and dependent factors clearly, in addition to the controls. The outcomes have to be revealed in a means which may be reproduced from the reader, but don't contain more info than required for a successful evaluation. Normally, significant and important data are gathered together into figures and tables that summarize pertinent information, and proper statistical investigations are completed based on the information gathered. Apart from presenting all the information sources, the writer also offers a written story of the contents of their tables and figures, in addition to an analysis of their statistical importance. In the story, the author also spreads the outcomes into the aims of this buy essay custom experiment as described previously. Were the results support the first hypothesis? Do they supply the information that has been hunted? Were there issues in the experimentation that threatened the results? Take care to not add the interpretation of the outcomes; which is reserved for the Discussion section.

Frank151 Interview with Artist Jared Aufrichtig by Azaria Wassyihun  Jared Aufrichtig’s last name means “The Way of Truth” in German—an ideal Jared seems to wholeheartedly live by. It’s actually quite hard to put Jared in any sort of category; he’s a skater, a surfer, a photographer, an artist, an activist, and even an accomplished SkullCandy DJ, and fortunately for us, the list goes on and on. With such an eclectic list of talents, it’s hard to believe Jared committed six entire years to his most recent project, Expressions Book One South Africa, a 700 page behemoth of a coffee table book dealing with a wide variety of subjects pertaining to South African culture and especially its youth culture. In order to accomplish such a feat, Jared immersed himself into South African culture for six years, studying what they did differently from the rest of the world, as well as how they treated his several passions, hence the inclusion of skating, surfing, plants, animals, food, and others in the book. Jared’s works are labors of love. With this book, he hopes to educate people about the South African art scene by collaborating with 35 artists, from graffiti writers to graphic designers. Truly an original work, Expressions Book One is the first of a series of books Jared is working on, so expect to see many more editions in the years to come. You grew up in Long Beach, California but you've been going to South Africa since the early '80s. What is it about the "youth culture" that inspired you to move there full-time? At first I was inspired by the many fond memories of visiting there and a myriad of nostalgic surf stories of my father growing up with Shaun Tomson, coupled with the fact that the youth culture at the time was less exposed and raw. Also, I’m not living there as full-time now as when I was working on my book. For the past three years, I only spend about six to eight months a year in SA. You note on the book's website that you noticed a "major gap/problem for creative people" in South Africa, how do you hope this book and future books will help close said gap? I hope that some people get more from my book than just the beautiful and striking images. There is a deeper hidden narrative like in most of my work; in addition it exposed many innovators, places, and things that are now household names in South Africa. Although I’d also like to say that there is still a problem for creative people as well as solicited media content out there. The support for books, art, creativity, and these kinds of things is hardly even decent. It is Africa and there is an underlying constant struggle, so most people tend to spend money on necessities and not entertainment. While the more wealthy or able people who should and could support the arts and culture seem to mostly spend on Tec and hyped trendy items from the US or Europe. I think slowly things like my book and other publications coupled with increased media exposure will help build a strong support for local art and youth culture, as well as creativity and literary culture. You open the book with the quote, "What do we see in the world around us?" How does photography help you capture what you see as opposed to other forms of art? As an artist one takes things in and then represents the original perspective, thought, or idea in a new way. Celluloid photography and polaroid photography have a unique way of capturing a moment by allowing the photographer to use composition, knowledge, and their experience with light to manipulate and capture a short period of time. I’m not too sure about the 1’s and 0’s that make up a digital image, but plenty of people (including myself on the rare occasion) get good results and pretty pictures. Photography is also a very direct manipulation of what we see as opposed to trying to recreate something seen like other visual art. The range of categories covered for your book is insane, going from land to music and plants to skateboarding—did you find it necessary to cover all these areas in order to fully showcase South Africa? Yes, definitely. When I undergo a major creative project, most of the time the integrity and process hold the most importance. It was Expressions Book One, so for my 1st book I wanted it to show something prominent. South Africa is so rich and diverse; you need to look into many aspects in order to fully see the whole picture. Sometimes cats come here only looking to shark cage dive or see “the big five” and internationally all we’re represented by is violence, crime, celebrity adoptions, or Die Antwoord and Madiba (respect and blessings to the man!). Also, most of the stuff like art, music, surfing, and skateboarding are an integral part of my life and things I explore avidly. You seem to gravitate toward black and white photography—how has that influenced the subject matter you seek out? I wouldn’t really say I gravitate towards black and white photography, although I am a devoted addict. I’m fond of how the image can carry or express a different emotion lacking colors, and I also like the contrasts of light and dark with a vast range of grey area. In addition, sometimes the black and white can add a historic or timeless look. I do however gravitate towards celluloid and polaroid photography in my work, both of which I shoot regularly in black and white. You used celluloid film in Expressions Book One South Africa, what is it about that style of photography (as opposed to digital) that you believe captures the essence of South African youth culture? I shot the entire book using only celluloid film as a way to properly record and document the six-seven year period that I was exploring and studying, an important period of time in South Africa and youth culture that was also coincidentally leading up to a World Cup. A majority of my photography is shot with a plethora of old cameras. I also believe that the style and aesthetic of celluloid and polaroid photography is ideal for capturing the sprit and essence of the truest types of “being here and now” youth culture. What was the lithographic printing process like? How did you decide to use that method of printing? The lithographic print process is an amazing way to reproduce imagery. I was directly involved in every step, from start to finish. It was such an immense learning process and showed me numerous insights and experiences into printing and production. I decided to use that method of printing because I value and respect print and books, I wanted to offer a unique limited edition lithographic coffee table book about South Africa made in South Africa. As a bonus for being so involved in the books creation, the printer/publisher allowed me to utilize some of the original lithographic plates used to print my book. I cut up the massive sheets of metal with industrial guillotine into small pieces of art. I’ve given away an original litho plate to a majority of the cats with deluxe edition copies and then some. I had a big exhibition at Gallery Kalashnikov in Johannesburg during the SA Art Fair and Fashion Week in September/October, where I used some of the plates to make some new art pieces. A lady from the states who has a house in Florida bought the first Dumile (FM DOOM) Tribute Expressions African Mask. I’m busy making more and finding new ways to turn the litho plates into something really special. You've combined your photography with various graphic artists from South Africa for this book, how did you decide which artists to collaborate with? I always enjoy collaborating with other artist and love the way they’re all so different and have their own style and techniques. For my book, I worked with a wide variety of artist that I link up with while doing research and shooting the content around South Africa. Illustrators, tattoo and graffiti artists, painters, cartoonists, and even a few graphic designers who work with big ad agencies. Most of the artists I selected because of their work and presence in the SA scene, or maybe I thought they might work well with a particular subject or idea. A few of the artist designed layouts and were also featured in the book doing what they do best. How has working with South African artists (graphic, graffiti, illustrators, and tattoo) influenced your photography style? Working with other talented artists can be a good influence on perspective or style. I think a lot about bold colors and different lines due to my design and tattoo friends. I would also say that my art and graffiti background adds a certain grungy or edgy element to the way I try to shot some of my work. No everything is or needs to be so perfect or simple. I’d also like to think I picked up a bit of the African styles. What projects are you working on at the moment? Lately I’ve been so busy and blessed with wonderful projects, along with hitting different regions all over the globe. "Surfing Butter On A Hot Plate" is the title to my new surf film project; I was working on it in Jeffreys Bay for a few months earlier this year. Now I’m currently in Cape Town enjoying the beginning of the summer season and planning a mad states mission to LA/Miami/NYC. Soon I’ll be launching a Kickstarter for a book project with my dude from BK, Matt Dobbs aka Youth Waste. Also doing/curating a classic charity art auction with Paddle8 for some rad ocean/surf based NGOs during Art Basel. Definitely check that out, it launches on the third of December. And if you’re in Miami for Basel, maybe you’ll be a lucky one and get your hands on the Limited Edition Art Baseball Card Series I’m doing as promotion.

I. SUN, DESERT, RADIATION
Before the Atacama Desert became what it is today – a platform for the extraction and exploitation of minerals (mainly copper, lithium and nitrate), a region of mostly ghost towns and enormous astronomical observatories –, the desert was governed by the god Inti (the sun), a sacred fgure, deity and ancestor to the Inca Empire and the Andean cultures’ cosmology. Te Incas worshipped Inti, for they knew that the sun endowed their land, through its energy, with photosynthetic nourishment. Te land itself was another of their sacred fgures, Pachamama (the world, the cosmos, mother Earth). Inti signifed the source of all riches, the king of the skies, of the plants and the universe. One of the legacies of the Incan Empire, which was mostly settled around present day Peru, can be found in the national currency of that country, which is the Sol (sun). Nowadays there are three sun-related phenomena – both as capital and as a celestial fgure – that reign over the Atacama Desert, helping to defne it: it is the place with the most solar radiation in the world and its skies have one of the best astronomical visibility, which has turned it into an ideal place for studying and research extraterres- trial life.
Peru’s ofcial currency is Nuevo Sol (New Sun), but it is normally called just Soles (Suns) in the plural, which makes it diferent from most Spanish-speaking Central and South American countries whose currencies are known as Peso. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to consider that pre-Columbian cultures did not have the con- cept of currency, which was introduced during the Spanish conquest, when payments were made in peso (weight), as in “its weight in gold”. Tis explains also the label of “golden suns” that is written on many of Peruvian coins.
Solar refection and radiation hold probably the most potential as energy sources for the future of man. A 2012 study conducted by scientists from Universidad de Chile2 confrmed that the Atacama Desert is the place that registers the highest levels of so- lar radiation in the world (between 7 y 7,5 kwh/m2), which is due, amongst many reasons, to the fact that the Atacama is also considered the driest place in the world3. According to this study, by putting into use a surface of 400 square kilometers, Chile could generate enough energy to power up the entire country (756.950 km2). Tere are currently over 30 projects to this, one of them dedicated to building the largest thermosolar collector of Latin America. Tis project centers around a 250m high tower that will capture the heat generated by the sun, refected by 10,600 mirrors (heliostats), storing it through a system of tanks flled with fused salts and thus gener- ating electrical energy.
Tis project in the Chilean desert would only be exceeded by a space based solar power project called PowerSat, which aims at generating solar energy in space and send it back to Earth. Tis strategy, that is being studied since the 1970s, would pre- vent issues such as dispersion due to the sun’s refection in the atmosphere, and it would allow for the generation of solar energy 24 hours per day, freeing the process from the constraints of the night and day cycle, thus raising energetic efciency to 85%, instead of the 35% that current technologies hold.
PowerSat proposes to use the Moon as its potential base, platform and satellite. Solar refectors would be installed there and thus avoid the geopolitical issues that might arise from an Earthly installation, as well as the issue of the scarcity of natural re- sources in the desert, such as the water that is needed to make these installations work. Te Moon would thus be transformed into a sort of self-replicating satellite, a kind of artifcial satellite that replicates its natural function as solar light refector to- wards the Earth – a function it currently performs only at night. Tere are, however, many opponents to the development of this technology, mainly due to the perils that may arise from transmitting this energy from the sky to the Earth. Te sun’s radia- tion and exposure on Earth also posits a natural threat to man. In fact, without the atmosphere – the gaseous layer that surrounds Earth and disperses the energy from radiation – it would be impossible to survive the overexposure to the sun, especially in places like deserts, where clouds, vegetation and shade are scarce. Tere is actually a hole in the ozone layer, expanding over time, precisely over the South Pole, where the exposure to Ultra Violet rays is manifestly hazardous to human health.
Artist Tomas Mailänder’s photographic project Illustrated People depicts in brutal fashion the harmful condition of human exposure to UV rays. In this project, Mailänder applied 23 original negatives selected from the Archive of Modern Confict’s collection to the skin of models, before projecting a powerful UV lamp over them, thus revealing a feeting image on the skin’s surface. Te artist then photographed each of his models before the sun made the image disappear.
Mailänder uses human skin as s sort of photographic paper, by showing and record- ing – or burning – over them images from photographic negative prints. Skin thus becomes a self-refecting medium of print that both illustrates and relives at once the sufering and torture received by or applied to those pictured in the original photo- graphs or negatives, people who show signs of mutilations or physical deformities, amongst other signs of violence and/or brutality.
On a similar note, in Atomic Lights, Japanese-American writer Akira Mizuta Lippit presents the Hiroshima atomic bomb of 1945 as a “weapon of light”: “Few have pointed out that the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were light weapons that pre-fgured the enhanced-radiation neutron bomb, the directed-beam laser weapons and the charged-particle guns.” Mizuta Lippit also compares this weapon to a sort of photographical exposure, in which human bodies were imprinted as sil- houettes on the pavement or in the front of houses, amongst other places, thus being transformed into photographic images: “If the atomic blasts and blackened skies can be thought of as massive cameras, the victims of this ’dark atomic room’ can be seen as photographic efects.”
The desert is also one of the main platforms employed by many countries in the test- ing of nuclear weapons, since its remoteness and emptiness are ideal conditions for such activities. Te frst nuclear bomb was tested in 1945 at La Jornada del Muerto, in the US state of New Mexico. Te British tested their nuclear weapons at Woomera in South Australia and the French at Reggane in the Sahara. China used Lop Nor and the Soviet Union experimented at Semipalatinsk, at the Northeast of present-day Kazakhstan. Many of these extensive desert areas remain in the hands of the military. The “forbidden area” of the Woomera Desert is considered the largest land aerospace testing range, with a surface of 27,000 square kilometers, roughly the equivalent of the surface of England.

Defining “The Cinematic Look”
Many of us talk about “the cinematic look” without defining what it is. Here’s my take.
For a Mother’s Day outing, my spouse, in-laws and I went to Filoli, one of the last country estates of the early 20th century and now a private park. The main attraction is the gardens, which are particularly lovely, but the old manor house is open for self-guided tours.
I’m not terribly interested in flowers, or manor houses, or self-guided tours, but I love creating images, so I use such trips as an opportunity to transform the sights into images that appeal to me. On this day I must have been in a bit of a dark mood, as I spent my time transforming this lovely estate into an images of a creepy haunted house and a lost bygone era.
This is the image that triggered this theme:
I snapped this shot spontaneously as I walked out of one of the nicer of the manor’s rooms. I felt the germ of something as I looked up the staircase, and it took me a second to figure out what it brought to mind. It was, of course, this fairly famous image:
The Brown Lady.
This is The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall. When I was a kid, this was one of the most famous “ghost photographs” ever taken. It’s clearly a fake, but most of the images I make professional are exactly that: fake. The trick is that fake images serve a purpose: they tell a deliberate story and evoke a specific mood. I love the mood of this image: it’s mysterious and other worldly, and the primitive photographic technology adds a layer of abstraction that makes me think, “You know, that could have happened, and the image is far enough removed from perfection that it almost feels more real.” If the base image had been shot on an iPhone it would hardly have felt as creepy… at least without a lot of manipulation.
Have I mentioned yet that I’m a huge fan of Hipstamatic? No? Well, as soon as I looked up this staircase I knew what image I wanted to create, and Hipstamatic delivered in spades:
My image doesn’t have a ghost in it, but the mood almost invites one to appear. Everything about this—the softly blown-out window, the contrast, the lack of color, the “film grain,” and the sloppy border–adds a level of abstraction that becomes a story in itself. Out of sheer boredom, I transformed the image of a historical monument’s backlit staircase into a foreboding image of a haunted moment in time.
I love that. This is what I get paid to do: tell stories through images, and transform real places into fantasies that sell products. I rarely get to create anything so creepy in my commercial work, as there aren’t many products that are branded as “creepy ghostware,” but I love to transform places into images that reflect something that they aren’t. I do that at work all the time, and I also do it for fun.
There’s a power to the aged photograph that’s hard to communicate. It’s truly a moment lost to time, and there are questions surrounding it that will never be answered. I love stories that dwell on such things. One of my favorite TV mini series is called The Lost Room, and while it is fairly low budget the concept is a powerful: one sunny morning in 1961, a hotel room near Gallup, New Mexico is torn from reality, and everything within it reappears possessing extraordinary powers. Some of the objects, such as the wristwatch, are benign: put an egg in the watchband and it will be instantly hardboiled. Some, though, are more interesting: touch the bus ticket and you will be instantly teleported to a deserted highway near Gallup, no matter where in the world you happen to be.
Why? No reason. Or whatever the reason, it’s beyond understanding.
In this scene, our heroes take one of these objects—a Polaroid picture—to the site of the lost hotel room, and discover that, through it, they can see how the lost room appeared just before it went missing in 1961:
I don’t find this series to be shot in a terribly cinematic way, but that scene gives me chills. Over the course of the show the mystery of the room is slowly revealed, and the fact that we can only glimpse what it once looked like through an old, wrinkled Polaroid picture adds enough abstraction that we are drawn into this image, willing to accept as real whatever it happens to show us. The very act of putting a frame around an image makes it abstract and draws us in. In this case, the frame within a frame is what grabs us.
For me, part of the process of making something “cinematic” is transformation: taking one thing and turning it into an abstract image that pulls the viewer away from reality and puts them into a visually constructed story with a strong point of view.
There’s been a trend away from this kind of abstraction, in the form of using documentary techniques to tell dramatic stories both in commercials, movies and TV. This has been an interesting experiment, and I’ve shot quite a lot of this kind of material, but my hope is that we can return to crafted storytelling sometime soon. Historically, audiences have responded more to abstract imagery than to realistic imagery, and while doc-style production is fast and easy I feel as if it is slowly losing its power. Even in its abstraction, audiences are seeing it more and more as realistic, and it’s becoming boring. Audiences, especially younger audiences, want to see images that are compelling—not necessarily real.
This is why we have Hipstamatic and Instagram. It’s also why I used used lenses that were between 50 and 80 years old to shoot a recent commercial project. The cleaner the images we can capture technologically, the more we yearn for images that had more character. (And when people say “character,” I usually translate that as “strong point of view.”)
Film is abstract by its very nature: you had to look past the grain and the softness and edges of the frame to see the story within. We still have the frame edges to work with, but digital is very clean and sharp. Sometimes that’s the right look, but other times… it’s nice to make a statement by affecting the image optically, in a way that you’d never see if you were viewing the same scene by eye. Reality is interesting when you’re experiencing it, but when an audience is watching a story through a frame, they want to see that story through a strong viewpoint that isn’t their own. That means making it appear visually less real while telling a story that feels more real as a result.
After I created a ghost story out of a staircase, I set out to show the house as it would have appeared in snapshots of the time in which it was built. I wanted to see how abstraction made modern images tell a distant story. Here are some more pictures, and then I have three videos to show that illustrate an aspect of “cinematic” imagery.
This snapshot felt like it could be interesting, but as captured it was too “real.” I knew, though, that with a little tweaking I could do something special with it.
Transforming it into an image from another time made it much more compelling:
There’s a story here, and it is told both through its precision (the framing, the window panes pushing the viewer’s attention toward the stone head, the layers of depth within the image) and its abstraction (the sloppy border, the textured sepia “paper”, the “film grain”). By adding abstraction, I made a humdrum image into a compelling historical snapshot by embracing past limitations.
I snapped this shot as we approached the front of the mansion. It’s a very pleasant-looking building, but I found that boring. I did a little interpreting:
This feels a bit like a historical photograph that pushed the edge of the film’s technical boundaries.
This image tells a different story. The image above just feels old, but this one feels as if it’s a moment of time that’s actually in the process of decaying, to be lost forever. The mood is very different. Also, the image above feels a little like a cheap postcard due to its soft contrast, whereas the image below has some “snap” and feels like a much more professionally crafted image.
Both are more interesting than the underexposed color photo I snapped with my iPhone on full auto, and yet I knew roughly what I wanted the final shots to look like when I captured the original image.
I wanted this image to communicate the feeling that someone from a distant time was just about to step into view of the mirror:
My iPhone is great for capturing quick shots on the fly, but not so good at interpretation. I did the rest in Hipstamatic:
Now I’ve got a story. The fact that I’m showing only part of the mirror, while it is clearly the focal point, and the mirror is only showing part of the room, makes the image mysterious. The image doesn’t tell a story in itself, but it feels as if it’s about to tell one. That’s even more interesting.
This is not so much about showing what’s possible when shooting snapshots with an iPhone, but to show that one can impart mood by carefully removing an image from reality by removing it from reality, through a combination of lensing, framing, exposure and coloring. What’s more, one can decide on what one wants to do in advance and create photographs that will work even better for that particular look. For those of us who create compelling images to order, this is great fun.
Here are some other ordinary images that became interesting snapshots from another time:
This last image was one of my favorites:
I couldn’t get the exact shot I wanted using the iPhone’s wide lens, but I knew that I could crop in a fair bit while dodging the branches I didn’t want to see at the top:
I was inspired to take this picture, and in a very roundabout way:
This is a frame from a film that, when I saw it in film school, had a profound impact on me: Last Year in Marienbad. This is a film that people either love or hate. I loved it, even though—ultimately—it is completely style over substance. Or, it’s whatever you want it to be: when interviewed about the film shortly after its release, the director and writer gave deliberately contradictory answers about the film’s plot, and never willingly explained what the film was about.
It’s extraordinarily pretentious, stunningly beautiful, abstract, and precise, all at the same time.
This is a beautiful cut down showing off this film’s imagery while eliminating much of its pretentiousness:
If you ever watch the movie, you’ll discover that there’s not much story there. Perhaps that’s deliberate. One theory about this film is that you’re meant to make of it whatever you will. My point, though, is that this is about as far from reality as you can get, and that just makes it more beautiful and compelling.
For me, this is cinematic. It’s very precise, very symmetrical, very constructed… and very wrong. It’s not at all like reality, but it’s an interpretation of reality where every frame tells the story in a cohesive way. This is not the only way to shoot cinematic images, but rather an example that shows that the most cinematic images come about when you figure out what story you’re trying to tell, distill it to its essence, and then create images from that essence.
While researching this article, I came across a music video that was inspired by this movie. Some creative soul then took that song and recut the music video using footage from the actual movie.
Here’s the music video:
And here’s the recut version using actual images from the film:
The music video is fun, but it’s not as good as the movie. Clearly it’s hard to follow in the footsteps of a modern work of art, but I tried to figure out what it was that drew me out of it. I think the answer is “precision.” The movie is very precise in its compositions and movements, to the point where the camera is disconnected from the “reality” it is capturing, and that makes the imagery extremely compelling to me. It’s as if the actors are on a stage, constrained to the movements of the camera, instead of the camera being constrained to the movements of the actors.
The music video doesn’t quite succeed in the same way. It is 85% of the way there, but the camerawork isn’t as rigidly precise. There are wide angle shots from head height, for example, where the foreshortening feels wrong, as if placing the camera at the same height as a person’s eyes for a wide shot was a bit too real and accommodating.
Cinematic images are artistic images. They are not reality, they are interpretations of reality. And, if you think about it, there’s no such thing as a “real” image: as soon as you put a frame around reality, you are imparting a layer of abstraction upon it that represents your point of view as a storyteller. I don’t see a good reason not to take that as far as possible, because that’s where the truly amazing visual stories live. That can mean distorting the image, or making it sharper, or moving the camera precisely, or shaking it a lot. What’s important is figuring out what this visual storytelling language is in advance and sticking to it.
Recently I shot a spot for a company where we captured images distorted by wine glasses held right up against the lens. It worked for the product and it looked great… and the abstract imagery makes the spot one that draws viewers right in. The distorted image tells a visual story that’s different and interesting, yet totally appropriate.
No matter whether we’re shooting spots, movies or TV, the question to ask ourselves is: why make this look “real”? It’s never going to be real, so why not push the limits? And, rather than shoot the story and find it later, why not find its essence and let that permeate every shot? That’s when “cinematic” truly happens.
“Cinematic” imagery is intentional imagery. Viewers don’t want to see reality. They want to see your reality.

Presentation and feedback
For my presentation I did a pitch for the Ian Perry Scholarship. The power point should be linked bellow. Overall I think I had decent ideas but my presentation was way of, I had way too much information to the point it became confusing as to what I was trying to pitch, I should have been more succinct and clear. I had to have two ideas to pitch and I think the one based in Africa should be my first personal project after I get my company going, I have been setting up places to stay and events I need to go to so Overall I feel positive about the experience, my pitch needs tightening but my ideas are strong.
My presentation should be linked where i submitted.

Speech
For my project I want to present the lives of immigrant employees who are doing the minimum wage jobs in a Varity of conditions but all gruelling In west London. This will involve me working in these places and actually building real relationships with my sitters. I will be getting these jobs in mostly Asian and Somali areas because I would like to emphasise people of colour in this project but that doesn’t mean I wont use European sitters also. My Close aunt being a Hindi and Punjabi translator I have always been exposed to the realties of working class immigration.
The reason why I chose this project was because of my first job, which was working in an extremely rundown corner shop, although the conditions where a bit Grimy I found a strong sense of community lay there, they where still giving people tabs until the end of the week, and the check out was almost like a Jamaican Hairdressers, people always coming in for a chat. But what struck me was the preparation before opening, when the sun was still rising I would have to set up the fruit stand and carry deliveries into a very run down walk in freezer, I loved how the shop looked at that time, it was like a twilight zone. Then I worked in a garage in the slough trading estates, learning car body repair, I was apprenticing under a Hungarian gentlemen who spoke hardly any English and grew frustrated when he could not explain things. He would offer me Cigarettes and talk about his frustrations with he 6-day workweek. In the engine shop there was a person called Happy Singh and yes he was exactly as jolly as you are expecting, he also works a 6 day work week. It is interesting how people’s inner selves slowly reveal themselves after hours and hours of grinding labour. But I would also like to represent these people in their homes. Because as well as it portraying the life style, their mental state, money situation and also eccentricities.
My first Job will be the first job I ever had again but the owner has since become some what of a king pin of Jersey Parade (the row of shops where the shop is located), he now owns 4 other shops on the same road and sold others, Him and his family live above these shops and he is currently trying to drive out a butchery on the road with his own butchery one shop over from them. As Wealthy as this man seems, this is much more a story about a constant struggle from nothing into his little suburban empire. This man and his family lives above a shop that they have ben working everyday for the last 20 years and didn’t get help until 5 years ago. He still speaks in broken English but he built many businesses and thrived in England.
These people stories need to be told because I feel like there are many unsung heroes in everyone local areas and many pillars that make home feel like home but also as a contrast the story of many working class immigrants particularly in the Asian population of west London is one of displacement, Particularly in the 80s when the national front was challenging Asian communities with the support of the police when things where particularly intense in India. You would see a lot of Sikh people involved in protests during this time in areas like Southall because it is in the warrior nature of Sikhi but also because of the Indian government raid and destroying bits of the golden temple and assassinating A Sikh khalistani leader. Being a Sikh Myself I have always found the community comes together more then most weather it be melas, religious events or defending Temples from being stoned by white power nationalists.
I will be getting jobs such as big to small Indian cash and carries, dock yard work, ware house work in Southall, cheap hotel cleaning, barbers, car washes and also immigrant women who support families with a cash in hand maid service. Which There are in a shocking abundance. I want to also explore the world of casual jobs and I will try and find odd ones in the classified ads in shop windows.
There are a lot of new immigrants who often are sleeping on the streets for months at a time, they have started congregating around the increasing industrial abandoned spaces in some areas, car parks to. Creating temporary pop up shanty towns at night in these places, most of them have been con-ed into believe they have job security by crooked travel agents in their countries, this reminds me of the dust bowl era in America.
This illustrates why I need to do this project. With Brexit and also the current situation in America. We have not fully humanized working class immigrants, Often over exoticfitation is a poor excuse for progress. I want to appeal to the human empathy photography can produce, often borders can make people feel violated and have a need to ostracizes foreign people to maintain a sense of security. But I want to represent a side of England that are its stomach folds, the Gaffa tape no one sees. In Looking into the writer James Joyce, I have been inspired to represent the multiplicity in life through the language of my fellow local people.
I will use the money allocated to me to pay my sitters, lenses, and film. I will also need to rent Medium Format film cameras for a few shoots inside the home. For quality sake but also it would legitimise my practice, it would be hard to be mistaken for a immigration detective with a mamiya. Aside from the budget this scholarship would really legitimise my practice. It would certainly give  me a more convincing reason to ask these people for their portraits, these delicate subjects cant be achieved by a passer by, it comes from building good bases with real people. I will be staying at home so the money I get for from the jobs will go to very discounted rent and travel expenses, 3 or more of these jobs would barely even get you ends meet, aside from the access I already have this is another reason why this scholarship would help.
This would perfectly set me up for my next project. Which would be based on amateur rallying in Kenya but also a few others in Africa. Which is a massive deal to the Sikh community in Kenya. My family is 3 generations Kenyan and nearly everyone we know there are involved In motor sports somehow. This has been a proud tradition in the Sikh community since the 1940s and has grown ever since. The Sikh Community in Kenya are extremely well connected, everyone knows everyone. I will split my time in between Nairobi and Kisumu. And will stay with family and in my families farmhouse In Kisumu. Kisumu is an interesting place to start because it is split in between the hands on farmers and the contactors who often live very bourgeois lives. Everyone lives in their own compound and it is their own micro universe. The farmers have huge lots of lands and very eccentric houses, planning permission isn’t as strict there and people start driving by the age of 12. Nearly everyone there is an entrepreneur of some sorts. These spaces and visual language is like nothing I have ever seen before the wealth divide is crazy but the lives that the middle classes are like what billionaires do here. As well as the rally it self I want to focus on the characters that peruse it, and the almost village like aspects of this community. Although houses and land are extremely sparse in Kenya everyone congregates in the Gudwara in town and catches up, this is where the community is realised, a lot of networking also goes on there, if your family is known there they almost kill you with hospitality, this is why I think I have supreme access. My grandfather was a photographer and directed the first Swahili movie Milavi and also the second. He also shot the news for KBC and dabbled in Journalism. I will also assist his friend who has been documenting the races since the mid 50s, there are 2 photographer that I will be learning from in the field, although they have been shooting the days at the race I want to go further and capture the peoples lives who are big players in these events. This project makes sense for me to do and with this scholarships name and exposure, I will be legitimate enough to publish these grand stories with out being to invasive.
I will start this project with my neighbour who lives 2 miles away. The Brar family who own a huge farm. They have had a difficult five years but their only son Satthi has had to have several reconstructive surgeries on his shoulder due to a crash. His father Billay lives on a huge compound, which also contains his brother’s house. He is someone else I want to photograph.
He owns a mechanics workshop which looks straight out of the 50s. He is a very eccentric person to say the least he has over 40 monkeys who live around his house, they all have names and he loves and feeds them every day, they also have a zoo you can see while you pull up in the drive way. This place almost doesn’t seem real. By contrast I will be shooting some family friends The Baryans who own the biggest transpiration company in Kenya, Multiple Transportation. Their eldest son Manvir is an avid rally driver, he drives for Team Multiple. He has recently won first place in last years Kisumu cup. He is particularly close with my dad and a personal friend to me growing up. His best friend Babu was recently killed in a race they where both in. I personally knew him also; this project would be in dedication to Babu. Although what happened to his body was horrific, the passion In Manvir and the rest of the rallying community has not been diminished and is still stronger then ever. Much like James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake I want the project to constantly shift perspectives of all the different people involved with creating this community and the pillars that lead and shape to this die hard love for a motor sport. I am trying to portray all these different accounts while I tie them together to form a portrait of a place. A simulacra of a way of living un-fathomable by most.
