He'd driven past the house once, twice, three times now, in the past few days. It had to be joke. It'd be ridiculous to think otherwise.
Peter had thought it a joke at first.
A perfectly plain, unremarkable envelope—no return address—and within it, an equally plain, unremarkable piece of paper. Scratched into it in ballpoint pen, a set of coordinates.
The perfectly plain, unremarkable brownstone occupied a plain, unremarkable street corner. Its plainness and unremarkableness set Peter’s teeth on edge. He knew what kind of darkness, ugliness, lay behind those walls—so visceral, his skin crawled on approaching. It didn't sit right with him, not at all, that this shouldn't be reflected on the outside.
He wasn't sure what to expect upon entering.
A newly restored, freshly refurbished, entirely inoffensive interior wasn't it.
Meandering from one room to the next, he called to mind old crime scene photographs.
Here, Xavier Chavez tossed Amanda Young into a pit of needles. There, Laura Hunter fell victim to sarin gas permeating the air. Over yonder, Addison Corday slowly and painfully bled out.
No trace of them left behind. In their stead, an IKEA coffee table bearing a grossly fake plant—and more along those lines. Inexplicably, it angered him.
No matter.
He was drawn to the basement.
He wasn't going in blind, to tell the truth. They'd been hot on Hoffman’s trail for weeks—till the trail, suddenly and without explanation, ran cold. Call it a hunch, but Peter had been with the feds long enough to know when one ought to put two and two together.
The doors, although robust and seemingly heavy, weren't difficult to pull open. The accompanying screech was deafening. The stench might’ve made a lesser man empty his stomach.
A flashlight had been a good choice. Peter flicked it open, unleashed the military-grade light into the decrepit old room, watched it flood and seep into every nook and cranny. (For better or for worse—some things might’ve been better off remaining hidden from view; Peter wrinkled his nose at Gordon's foot.)
Hoffman sat there, a lifeless pile of limbs slouched against some piping. Peter couldn’t tell, not from that far off, whether he was even breathing.
He wasn’t sure which to hope for.
His boots click-clacked against the slightly sticky tile. Hoffman stirred.
His eyes, blue and tired and bloodshot, lingered on Peter. Alert but unseeing, cloudy and unfocused. How long has it been since Hoffman had been left down there?
A while, surely.
Peter could pinpoint the exact moment things snapped into place. Hoffman jerked like a kicked stray, a weak hand reaching out before again collapsing by his side. "Strahm?"
His voice was hoarse; beyond that, really. It crackled around each syllable forced up his raw throat. A haunting realization rattled through him: Hoffman must've screamed. He must have screamed for a long time.
"Yeah." Peter’s mouth was dry.
"Hey."
Peter wasn’t sure what had finally dragged his ass out here, to this accursed house and its rank basement bathroom. He'd have claimed revenge initially, or perhaps that deep-seated drive to see justice through. As it was, none of that seemed to matter much at all. Maybe he'd enact all those fantasies later, but...
For the moment, he found himself rather overcome with the singular desire to haul Hoffman to safety. (Certainly a strange sensation overall.)
Interestingly, instead of reaching for the bolt-cutters hanging off his belt, he reached for Hoffman’s dirty, grimy, cold face. Heaved a sigh upon feeling familiar skin beneath his fingers. (Godamn him to hell. Goddamn Hoffman, too.)
He sniffled—Christ, he sniffled.
"Been a while," he muttered into the pocket of air between them, running his thumbs over Hoffman’s cheeks.
Hoffman smiled an ugly, lovely smile.
Old habits and their hard deaths, and all that.

Quoth the Author: Our Next Book
Hello, everyone! I know I haven’t been here very much lately.  Well, in an effort to change that, I wanted to talk about a stream I’ve been running on Twitch (more recently live on my youtube channel) lately, called Quoth The Author.  I run it on Sundays at 5 PM EST, and it’s sort of a book club.
For the longest time, I’ve wanted to get back to reading books, but it was always so hard to find the time and motivation.  In talking to some friends, I found out that we were in a very similar place in regards to that.  And if there are some of us like this there are actually bound to be a lot of us.
In Quoth the Author, I let the audience know about a book we’ll be starting in advance so that you can procure your own copy, if you’d like.  But it isn’t necessary as, during the stream, I will read a section of the story aloud.  From there, the goal is to discuss, together, about what we’ve read.
If this interests you, please stop in, using the link above! And if you’d like to catch up on the progress of our current book (The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King), you can check out my youtube channel, where all previous episodes are posted.
But that’s not exactly what this post is about.  This post is about enlisting your help to pick the next book that we’ll cover! Below the cut, you’ll find the covers and blurbs of the four books we’re considering moving on to.  Please check them out and let me know in the replies (or the poll on facebook or twitter, depending on where you guys are coming from) which sounds the most intriguing to you.
Storm Front by Jim Butcher:
Tumblr media
“Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, or Other Entertainment. Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things—and most don't play well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a—well, whatever. There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get interesting. Magic - it can get a guy killed.”
Lightning by Dean Koontz:
Tumblr media
“A storm struck on the night Laura Shane was born, and there was a strangeness about the weather that people would remember for years. But even more mysterious was the blond-haired stranger who appeared out of nowhere – the man who saved Laura from a fatal delivery. Years later – another bolt of lightning – and the stranger returned, again to save Laura from tragedy. Was he the guardian angel he seemed? The devil in disguise? Or the master of a haunting destiny beyond time and space?”
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson:
Tumblr media
“Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.”
Stardust by Neil Gaiman:
Tumblr media
“Young Tristran Thorn will do anything to win the cold heart of beautiful Victoria—even fetch her the star they watch fall from the night sky. But to do so, he must enter the unexplored lands on the other side of the ancient wall that gives their tiny village its name. Beyond that old stone wall, Tristran learns, lies Faerie—where nothing not even a fallen star, is what he imagined.“
Please make your selections, friends! I’m excited to be heading off on another literary journey with you!

Reader’s Corner: Fly Me to the Moon (Vols. 12 and 13), Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible (Vol. 4), and Sugar Apple Fairy Tale (Vol. 1)
News of a second season of Banished From the Hero’s Party recently dropped, and coincidentally, we have a review of the newest volume of the manga to share with you today, along with volume one of Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, also soon to be adapted into an anime! Today’s column also features reviews of several other romantic series, including the first bound volume of Shonen Jump favorite, Blue Box; the latest volume of Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible; and the outlier, volume two of that series with a suitably outlandish title, Crazy Food Truck!
-----
Blue Box, Manga Vol. 1
My most anticipated manga has finally released physically in English, and I’m absolutely thrilled! Blue Box has been a story I’ve been deeply interested in and excited for. It’s about a young badminton player, Taiki, who ends up having a huge crush on his upperclassman, Chinatsu, after seeing how hard she plays basketball. While he looks for chances to talk to her, he never imagines they’ll get a lot closer (after a certain event) than just catching each other at the gym! He hopes that maybe she’ll start to like him the same way he likes her, but until that time comes, he keeps giving his all in badminton and encourages her to follow her dreams too. When I think of the perfect blend of blooming romance and sports, this manga right here captures it all! Taiki is a precious little bean who is respectable, adorable, thoughtful, and charming in his own awkward way. Not only do I deeply love both Taiki and Chinatsu, but the art style is perfection! There is such a softness at just the right moment, and then an intensity with action scenes—I really love the superb balance of capturing both. This is such a wonderful story, and I’m so thankful for its release because I deeply love everything about it! A great supporting cast of characters, a fantastic hero to follow, and the subtle fierceness of sports mixed with soft “romance” is everything I could want. Highly recommend it! ~ Laura A. Grace
Blue Box is published by VIZ Media.
Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke, Manga Vol. 3
I very much enjoyed reading this latest volume of Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke! This volume opened up with Claire finally being at the ball where Vik will choose his future bride, despite not receiving an invitation. Thankfully, the question of how things will unfold regarding Claire and her role in Vik’s life still are answered quickly. However, this volume had a new intensity that hasn’t been shown thus far in the series. Not saying there hasn’t been danger because that magical tornado in volume two was definitely a danger, but this time I feel the threat is more personal when Claire herself is in danger from two new villains. But Charlotte, Claire’s half-sister, is the real villain in this series. We’re finally seeing her true colors and just how horrible of a manipulator and character she is. I definitely dislike her a lot more than I did when I first started this series, even though I second the original creator’s comment in the afterword saying it’s hard to hate her because her character design is so cute. Ha! My only disappointment with this volume is how fast I read it. I felt so bummed at the end when I realized I had read all of it and couldn’t see what happens next in Claire’s life. As a result, I am eagerly anticipating the next volume’s release to see what will unfold! ~ Laura A. Grace
Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke is published by TokyoPop.

Crazy Food Truck, Manga Vol. 2
For those who don’t know, Crazy Food Truck follows the adventures of Gordon, a food truck driver and former soldier, and Arisa, a super-powered, mostly naked female soldier and huge eater. They travel looking for customers in the food truck, while keeping Arisa safe from those trying to find her. Volume two kicks off where volume one ended and keeps these characters on the move looking for more food options and customers. They encounter ghost towns, giant animals, and danger along the way. We also meet Arisa’s sister, who is likewise super-powered and is controlled by some shadowy government agencies. Volume two continues to be wild and all over the place. It has action, food, and more action, making for a fast-paced story. I’ve been loving every moment of it, but I can’t necessarily recommend it to everyone given how it portrays Arisa, and while she’s less nude than in volume one, there’s a lot of skin shown. Those for whom that is an issue would be wise to avoid this series. That said, if you want a wild, post-apocalyptic ride with a food truck driver and a girl trying to stay safe while figuring out the mystery behind her own powers, check it out. ~ MDMRN

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Light Novel Vol. 1
After her mother’s death, Anne follows in her footsteps to become a Silver Sugar Master, in order to create a special candy that she can offer up at her grave. However, in order to make it in time to the royal capital where the competition that crowns a Silver Sugar Master is held, she must traverse the dangerous Bloody Highway. To protect herself, Anne does something she hates the thought of and buys a fairy slave to be her bodyguard. Anne wants to treat her fairy, Challe, more as a friend than a slave, but Challe is cold to her and refuses to do anything unless Anne outright orders him. And that isn’t the only challenge that awaits Anne on her journey… First, I was pleasantly surprised at how the slavery aspect was addressed. As much as Anne wants to befriend him, Challe makes it clear that there can be no sort of “friendship” as long as Anne holds control of him as her slave. While he does warm up to her over the course of the volume, it is clear that his enslavement is a huge roadblock in their relationship. There’s also a good look at how Anne is trying to deal with her mother’s death, and how that drives her desire to become a Silver Sugar Master. I’m not quite as much of a fan of the third major character in the story, Anne’s “hopeless suitor” Jonas, who is unpleasant in a lot of ways; but at least things involving him are wrapped up in the volume in a fairly satisfying way. Overall, this volume was enjoyable enough to recommend to those who enjoy shoujo-style light novels. ~ stardf29

Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You, Manga Vol. 1
I am so very thankful for manga recommendations from other people! If it hadn’t been for my friend Shae at ShaeGeeksOut on YouTube recommending Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You, I would have completely missed out on this super-cute read! This heart-warming story centers on a former troublemaker, Sota, and a prim-and-proper “princess,” Sakura. While it seems they are from two different worlds and potentially have nothing in common, that doesn’t stop them both from secretly wanting to get to know each other. But they can’t seem to find their footing and actually have a conversation! These two are so precious to watch as their romance slowly unfolds through a series of misunderstandings and attempts to talk to one another! I will be quick to say that I absolutely loved this story! However, as soon as it arrived in the mail, I pushed it off on my husband since I knew he was looking for a romantic comedy to read. I was completely thrilled that he enjoyed it too! We both laughed more than once when reading, and I personally couldn’t get over these characters’ attempts to talk to each other as they end up misunderstanding one another or start blushing. It was so cute! The art is also excellent, and I really loved the character designs and expressions. I would highly recommend this manga if you’re looking for a cute, drama-free romantic comedy! I know it’s going to be a great series, and I can’t wait for the release of volume two! ~ Laura A. Grace

Banished from the Hero’s Party: I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside, Manga Vol. 3
When you’re a person of consequence, it’s difficult to live a life free of the responsibility of your power. Rit, the princess, and Red, the brilliant brother of the hero, continue their attempt to live out an idyllic existence as village apothecaries. But the past is chasing them down in the form of a one-time comrade, a traitor, and a mysterious man who may be most formidable of all. Volume three of Banished From the Hero’s Party continues to put forth all those good vibes that come along with the blossoming, cottagecore-brushed relationship between Rit and Red, but tensions are quickly rising. A considerable part of these chapters are spent on the turncoat Dir, providing the mangaka an opportunity to give more context for both Red’s relationship with Rit in the past and for his camaraderie with his former party, including his sister, whom we learn much more about in these chapters. She is equal parts dopey and terrifying. The fantasy elements of the tale are becoming stronger, accompanied and strengthened by Masahiro Ikeno’s beautiful artwork. I’m still most compelled by the peaceful elements of the story, but as it turns more and more toward adventure, I’m hopeful that the story will continue on this upward trajectory. ~ Twwk
Banished From the Hero’s Party is published by Yen Press.

Fly Me to the Moon, Manga Vols. 12-13
These volumes build on the previously introduced plot thread of Nasa’s job at a girls’ high school. There’s a discussion of whether Tsukasa is jealous—and should she be? We have some comedic encounters with specific students. In volume thirteen, we finally get a proper introduction to a mysterious student named Kaguya; her name implies a connection to the moon. Nasa has a mysterious dream about his wife. Oh, and now Aya wants Nasa to dig a pond, which leads to Tsukasa discovering how cool her husband can be. Later, thanks to Aya’s bullying, Nasa and Tsukasa get dragged out to a “haunted” mansion by the school film club (hilariously, the students actually recognize Aya as a content creator!). It kind of looks like we might be heading toward an encounter between moon-associated Tsukasa and moon-associated Kaguya. It is hard to know what to say about this series at this point. It’s still the sweet romantic comedy with nerdy references and hints of mystery that it’s always been. You probably know by now if you like it, so I’m not sure what else to write about. I still like this manga and plan to keep reading it. ~ Jeskai

Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, Manga Vol. 4
Kubo and Shiraishi finally go on their first date! Of course, this being a romcom manga, it’s not like an “official” real date, but it might as well be. And the result? The date, taking place over several chapters, is equal parts cute and meh, the former because that’s what Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible excels at—”aww” moments between the leads when they watch a movie together, or compare their heights with one another, or touch each other’s hair—and the latter when the series tries to be more serious, such as when it sexualizes Kubo or tries to create a bit of physical intimacy between the leads. The artwork in this series is amateurish and, in fact, feels like it’s regressed somewhat over the volumes. The characters are cutesy but not detailed, and many panels appear half-finished. So when there’s supposed to be some sort of sexual tension between Kubo and the very comically-drawn Shiraishi, it feels out of place, as if the mangaka doesn’t know his own series. Those scenes, combined with the fairly dull early chapters in volume four, remind me that, by this point, Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible is what it is: A romcom with plenty of cute moments that’s good for filling time, but which won’t ever leave you clamoring for more. ~ Twwk

“Reader’s Corner” is our way of embracing the wonderful world of manga, light novels, and visual novels, creative works intimately related to anime but with a magic all their own. Each week, our writers provide their thoughts on the works they’re reading—both those recently released as we keep you informed of newly published works, and those older titles that you might find as magical (or in some cases, reprehensible) as we do.

Beating Me Up by Rachel Platten for the character association meme
Thanks so much for your ask! You picked a nice song :)
I'd say I associate this song with Raevyn, specifically Raevyn after her breakup with Gordon in her original timeline. It doesn't fit perfectly, but it does fit. Maybe this is about the time when Gordon creates the program of Laura, where the wounds aren't as fresh anymore and Raevyn realizes Gordon has moved on - albeit in a less than perfect way - and she probably should too. I mean, we all know she never does and she does gets sent back in time and gets to be with Gordon again, but I could definitely see this song fitting her original timeline.

My Regrets
She could feel his hand on her damn knee still.
How bad do you wanna keep this job.
She started feeling like she couldn’t breathe
This bad
Creeping up, and up
How bout this bad.
God she has to get out of here.
This bad, he whispered as he leaned towards her.
What a despicable man George Toledo was. What a despicable despicable human.
As she slapped him and ran off she didn’t know where she was running.
Still didn’t know.
Laura Percy-Bruce prided herself on being a strong, independent, capable women, very few things scared her. Everything went as planned in her live.
And then Lenny ran off to LA, and everything was falling apart and god maybe she needed to find her Aunt Shirley but Shirley couldn’t fix this could she?
Right now tho she was shaking.
The door. The Door. She had to get out of thirty rock and she was never coming back.
She loved this job but she was scared, she couldn’t come back here.
She made it successfully to the elevator when she heard someone yell out.
“Laura?Laura!”
Damnit doors,close. Close. Close.
“ LAURA.”
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
when the elevator doors open she thinks shes escaped Gordon when
“ Laura!”
Shit. Shit.
“ Laura stop, where are you going? Laura? Laura there’s a show in less than thirty minutes” Gordon’s talking fast trying to charm his way out of this just like everything.
“Gordon I can’t do this, I don’t belong here this isn’t what I’m good at” Avoid it, avoid it.
“ Bullshit, you’re too good at this.” He paused realization dawning on his face ” Laura, Laura did, George… did he say something? Do something?”
“ No Gordon No I just” she can’t breathe” God Gordon fine yes, George kissed me, I hit him, I can’t I can’t come back”
“ Laura you mean more to this show, more to me, than George does. Than George ever will. “ She hates to see him pleading, but she can’t give in.
“ Gordon there will be a hundred more George Toledos, I will never escape them. At least if I leave this job” she really considered it” I hold more power over them in the clubs.”
“ Laura, I will fight every single one of those men if you let me, Hedy and I are getting a divorce just stay and we’ll work it all out”
The pause went on just long enough she started to get uncomfortable.
“ you know I can’t, I’m not strong enough I- I have to go back to him.”
His face contorts into a very unreadable expression.
“ Laura you know you can’t, you told me yourself what he’s gotten into, you told me “
“ I told you a lot of things Gordon. I’m sorry. I can’t stay here I don’t belong”
“ Mr. Ford consider this my formal resignation, my regrets. “
And she turned to leave, pushing past him without a care in the world.
Out in the cold nigh she began to cry
The heart break she felt was deeper than in years.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Lenny was back in New York and he was killing.
Standing aside the stage watching him from afar Laura felt happy, or maybe not happy but content.
Suddenly she heard a commotion by the door.
“ no no sir you don’t understand I’m Hedy Ford, my husband is on the Number one TV show in the country and I need to speak to Mrs Percy….. please you just understand we don’t have cash to pay the cover because we just wanna see Laura and leave. “
She could see Hedy know, but suddenly someone behind her pushed through.
“ to hell with this I can literally see her. LAURA. LAURA. “
“ Carr??” Laura shouted back with a start, with a look to her left she noticed lenny staring awkwardly at her, she nodded on to him and made her way to the door.
“ Lonnie it’s cool I know them” she noded to the bouncer
“Hedy. Mike. To what do I owe the pleasure”
Hedy glared at Mike in a way that told her they had decided ahead of time that she was doing the talking.
“ Laura the show wants you back.”
She want in the Defense.
“ Hedy I’m sorry I can’t.”
“ because of Toledo right? Screw that honey. You can not let a man of that low of human compassion and capability ruin you like this. That’s not the women you are. and the truth is by running away you are letting him win. I’m sorry to have to say that but. Laura they show was better with you working on it, it needs you. “
“ Hedy that’s sweet but I can’t be within 30 feet of him without being terrified I just can’t I-“
“ Laura.” Mike cut in” Gordon found out George was holding up his contract, that on top of what happened with you, he’s not gonna have a job tommorow.”
She sighed “ Mike that’s great for progress but I can’t, I just can’t do this”
He got this earnest look in his eyes, “Laura, in twenty four hours it is very likely I will be producing the Gordon ford show and I can’t do that shit alone, there is no one I would rather have in my talent manager chair, with my talent board, then you. If you won’t fo it for the show, or for Gordon, do it for me, your friend and professional partner to coke back”
“ Mike there is no for Gordon I” I glance worriedly at Hedy this got awkward fast.
“ Laura I do not care what you and Gordon are getting up to. We’re getting a divorce. The deal always was we’d get married to make our parents happy but if he found someone he wanted to publicly be with that we’d get divorced, and that happened. “
She stopped and thought for a second, her breathing overly defined. She looked over and Lenny was walking toward the group
And it was odd to her to discover she didn’t feel how she did when Gordon walked toward her. she wasn’t thrilled to see him, there was no light.
“ hey Doll, what’s going on” Lenny smirked.
“ Lenny I-“ was she really doing this” I’m sorry I can’t do this any longer. I’m not happy with any of this. Professionally or Personally, this isn’t going to work out and I can’t keep forcing it”
She can see Carr smirk out of this corner of my eye.
“ Laura baby what are you taking about, you know I can’t do this alone honey” Lenny’s eyes are so wide.
Silence stretches on as she looks at the man who saved her.
“ I’m sorry Lenny, it’s all over”
She’s saving herself this time,
She nods at Mike and follows him and Hedy out of the bar.
MNMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
When she arrived to 30 Rock she relived that they said George was getting canned tommorow, he’s still here.
As if sensing her sudden anxiety Hedy put her hand on my arm.
“ you aren’t alone Laura.”
When we made it to the set she makes it a point to stand between Hedy and Mike and when she catches Toledos eye, her gaze holds firm.
Eventually we go to commercial break and Gordon sees me. He gets out of his chair and crosses the room and simply hugs me, and she holds him back just as tight.
“ Laura I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I should’ve done something more but I”
“ Gordon.”She cuts him off “ it’s okay. I’m okay.” Even more now, she chooses not to add.
He pulls away and holds her by the shoulders, “ I I have to go back on air but, don’t run away? I still owe you a drink” he smirks
“ you might owe me a lot more than that Gordy”
He smiles and as he walks back to his seat

( hello everyone! This is my first time writing and I know it’s an OC no one has any idea who is but I promise with time more will make sense lol. This is the first time I’ve published anything I’ve written so be kind!! I couldn’t decide which point of view to use so I stuck with third person but let me know if that’s weird?? I hope you enjoy! I’d like to reiterate this is how I see the charecters in my mind and I once again don’t know how drug addiction is so I can’t accurately portray that through Lenny. Also I believe in Girl boss Hedy Ford, and she will continue to be a solid part of Gordon’s life and the show, just in this framework the divorce was easier :) I think Mike is a little OOC but I think in more of my stuff he’s better)

The Orville Season 3 Thoughts & Review
A week late due to traveling, but I adored this season. It’s easily the strongest of the show so far, finally nailing the tone they want and not being afraid to drop the comedy to just tell a damn good story. If this is the quality we can expect going forward, I sincerely hope this isn’t the end for the series. But if it does end here, at least it’s going out on a high note.
What I Liked
This show has had a budget increase, and holy crap, it shows. Everything looks spectacular, especially the special effects and the opening sequence.
Last season, the writers began to show that they were willing to drop the comedic elements at time to just tell a serious story. This season pushes that idea even further. There's definitely room for some laughs and lighthearted fun here and there, but the core of most stories is serious. Several episodes even go to some pretty dark places, dealing with suicide and bigotry and torture. The end result is a show that balances stupid fun and thought-provoking themes incredibly well.
The show is also willing to explore difficult topics that don't have a clear right answer. And I love that. Episodes leave you thinking, wondering if the characters did the right thing as they themselves wonder the same. To me that is so much more engaging than just showing the good guys standing up against the world’s bigotry. They’re real people that are trying to do the right thing, but wrestling with how to go about that in tough situations.
I also appreciate how this season actually goes into more detail about how the utopian future and economy works, especially in the finale. Star Trek tends to be rather handwave-y about it, so hearing Kelly just explain it outright was sort of surprising.
This show has basically perfected its combination of episodic and serialized storytelling. Each episode stands on its own, but with plot threads continuing from story to story and building on each other to create a larger narrative. They're also not afraid to let the episodes be longer if they need room to breathe -- one of the advantages of being on Hulu. Episode 8 in particular had a huge story to tell, so they allowed it a full hour and a half.
I love the shifting of allegiances throughout the galaxy, changing the status quo from season to season in an organic way. We started with the Union against the Krill, then it was the Union and Krill against the Kaylon, and now the Union and Kaylon against the Krill and Moclans.
This season is generally excellent at taking plot threads from previous seasons and bringing them back for an even bigger and more satisfying payoff. Nearly every Moclan episode is referenced in some way to continue that storyline. Laura comes back to give Gordon an even more emotional storyline with her. Teleya comes back to further the Krill alliance storyline. Lysella comes back as a follow-up to “Majority Rule” (and I’d be interested to see her as a main character in season 4). Fucking Dolly Parton comes back. Even Alara gets a cameo.
The Moclan storyline has always been one of the best parts of the show, and they've simply perfected it this season. Topa's journey of self-discovery and ultimate coming out as female was so beautiful and powerful. Then the way everything led to Moclus finally being expelled from the Union... all the groundwork from the previous seasons perfectly led up to an incredibly satisfying moment.
Then in the more personal relationships, Klyden getting called out on his bullshit was immensely satisfying... but I love that they had him realize his errors and return to his family to honestly try again. It happened a bit fast, and I wish they'd done more to show people struggling to forgive him. But considering that season 4 is uncertain, it's probably best to wrap up these plot threads just in case.
Bortus also got so many chances to shine this season. Peter Macon deserves an Emmy -- he's not just delivering deadpan comedy anymore, he's perfectly portraying an uncertain father who loves his child so much that he would do anything for her.
Isaac is another standout this season as he develops even further into his own character. It's fascinating how they touch on the mental health of someone who doesn't have emotions, and Mark Jackson is just spectacular.
What I Didn’t Like
I’m sorry to say that Charly didn’t quite work for me. She feels rather reverse-engineered to fit exactly the arc the season needed, and there wasn’t much to her outside of that. A lot of her personality was based around hating Isaac, with not much else to endear her to me before her death. The big moment works in a vaccum, but ultimately didn’t quite land for me.
Also, considering she’s the only confirmed queer character (you can debate if the Moclans count considering their culture), killing her off isn’t the best look. It’s not the most egregious case of bury your gays I’ve ever seen, but it definitely didn’t sit entirely right with me. I don’t necessarily think they should have let her survive simply beause of that, but having more absolutely confirmed queer characters would alleviate this considerably.
John and Talla don’t have anything to do this season. They’ve always been underrepresented, but this was even worse than usual. They’re only ever in scenes to progress the plot, when someone needs technobabble or something broken. I was intrigued by the idea of them becoming a couple, which I thought might give them something to do, but the show then played it for laughs before dropping the idea entirely -- didn’t love that.
I’ll talk about it more in the next section, but “From Unknown Graves” was really a disappointment that rippled through the season. I just think they needed a little bit more tying all the Kaylon plots together, and that episode was the time to do that. Taking the development that Kaylon could develop emotions, exploring it fully, and then finding a way to tie that into the development of the weapon would have given the overall season much better flow.
Episode Thoughts
Electric Sheep -- The pilot frankly shocked me. The fact that they came out swinging with such a deliberately serious and unfunny episode, touching on the difficult aftermath of a painful battle leading into Isaac's suicide... my god. The actual plot I found a bit lacking, and I don't think this will be a go-to for rewatch, but I can't deny how well-done this was.
Shadow Realms -- Easily the weakest episode of the season, and frankly one of the weakest in the entire show. Something was just off. The plot wasn't terribly compelling, the guest characters weren't engaging, and it felt like we were just meandering until it was done. Very uninspired and a surprising dip in quality.
Mortality Paradox --  This one was decent. The setup was intriguing, and I genuinely had no idea what was going on until the end. I enjoyed the continuation from "Mad Idolatry" as well. The only thing is I suspect this won't hold up well on rewatch once you know what's going on. It's fine, but not amazing.
Gently Falling Rain -- Really, really damn good. This one continues the storyline of the Krill alliance while bringing back to Teleya to address her relationship with Ed. And it's incredible. Everything about this, from the politics to the relationship drama to the reveal of Ed and Teleya's daughter, hit hard in exactly the way that it needed to.
A Tale of Two Topas --  I don't think I have the words, honestly. Watching Topa discover herself and come out was incredibly powerful and handled in such a beautiful and nuanced way that alluded to both trans and intersex issues. Plus Imani Pullum is fantastic as Topa. This is a strong contender for best episode of the entire series.
Twice in a Lifetime --  I liked this one. Seeing Gordon stranded back in time and struggle with that before ultimately seeking out Laura was a great choice for his character. And Ed and Kelly making the painful decision to force him out of that life he'd created for himself hurt. I love that Ed and Kelly clearly don't feel good about it, either, and the episode lets you sit in that discomfort with them, wondering if they should’ve just left him there. My only complaint is that Gordon seeking out Laura and using his future knowledge of her to progress their relationship is a tad creepy, and that doesn't really get addressed.
From Unknown Graves -- “Shadow Realms” may have been the worst episode of the season, but this one was more disappointing due to the missed potential. The storyline with the matriarchal society did not work for me at all, and as a result, the storyline with the Kaylon getting emotions and the effects it has on Isaac and Claire's relationship did not get nearly the time that they needed to breathe. It just seemed to be put together wrong. I actually did a full write-up on this one.
Midnight Blue --  This is where everything with the Moclans came to a head, and my god, it was outstanding. Building on Topa's storyline, intersecting it with Heveena's, and all of that leading to the Moclans finally getting called on their bullshit... and making this feature length, no less. This is another contender for best in the series.
Domino --   An excellent episode with powerful themes and a lot of huge moments... but it did feel a tad bloated. This is one of the few times this season I’ve felt that the freedom to have longer runtimes hurt more than it helped. Trimming this one down to under a hour would really have tightened things up.
Future Unknown -- After two enormous episodes, bringing things back down to a quieter finale was definitely the right call. I adored Claire and Isaac’s wedding, and all the little character moments leading up to it. And bringing back Lysella was a surprising choice, but her scenes with Kelly were all great.

wow i immediately want to rewatch the return because holy fuck!
i have a lot of thoughts, but think the main thing to note wrt the ending is that.. coop failed again. he fucked up on a cosmic scale this time.
so the girl in the 1950s was sarah, which i didn’t catch at first, and as a result judy now inhabits her, but for all of dale/gordon/garland/phillip’s strategizing to find judy over the years, dale never realized that she was in twin peaks all along. just like he never realized that leland was bob until it was too late, or that he never realized the extent of windom’s plan until it was too late.
bob’s cooper form (mr. c) is killed through deus ex machina in the most literal way possible. after he is returned to the lodge, all main plot lines of the show seem to wrap up neatly, including the girl with no eyes magically becoming the real diane, except for the fact that dale’s fear/guilt-wracked face is superimposed over the entire scene. our false sense of security as watchers is slowly withered away.
the implication was that laura was somehow the one who could stop judy (because she’s “the One”, the angels were with her, or maybe simply because sarah was her mother?). dale attempts twice to finish the blue rose team’s 25-year-old plan, first by trying to snatch laura out of 1989 and second by taking carrie back to twin peaks. there are no concrete indications that laura would be able to accomplish the task at either of these points-- dale is running on intuition from 25 years ago, a “simpler” time when we saw him to be an exemplary agent with a fundamentally good nature.
since then, mr. c has fundamentally altered the course of dale’s life and irreparably damaged so many others. dale expects things to be the same with diane, even after they go to texas and everything is “different”. she can’t look at him during lovemaking because she only sees her rapist. dale is compared by her with richard, who may or may not be his (or mr. c’s) son, and whom he has never personally met but whose name he reads with fearful recognition.
his behavior delineates sharply from what we are used to seeing-- he’s sloppy, taciturn, reckless. he grabs a woman he believes to be laura and drives her halfway across the country because he believes that she can help him complete his mission, not realizing that he is also putting her in mortal danger on nothing more than a hunch. at the end, he can’t even remember what year it is. he’s still stuck in the lodge where the eternal question of “is it future or is it past?” is never answered.
in the last shot, the lights go out. no more electricity.
judy, being associated with the lodge spirits, feeds on pain and sorrow. she got what she wanted. if dale and mr. c are truly inextricable, as other characters and some of his behaviors indicate, then mr. c accomplished his mission to meet judy at the same time that cooper failed his mission to kill her.
we don’t want to admit that cooper has darkness or failings in him. we want to see him as dougie, innocent and brave and caring. we don’t want to think about the pain and sorrow he caused or the pain and sorrow inside himself, just like the people of twin peaks didn’t want to see the pain and sorrow inside laura.
anyway i'm calling it quits there for now but wow what a show.

9, 25, & 101 for the book asks, please! 😊
(9) Favorite book of 2020
That was definitely The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins.
I legit had no idea Suzanne Collins was writing another Hunger Games book, and when I randomly found it at Walmart, I lost my shit. I then prompty bought it and read it in one sitting.
Lucy Gray Baird is a queen and I love her.
(25) A book by your favorite author
I have several favorite authors, but for this question, I'm going to go with Stephen King and say The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.
Super underrated book, and one I would recommend even if you're not a big King fan. It's about a little girl who wanders off while hiking with her family and gets lost in the woods.
It's utterly terrifying and heartbreaking just watching this poor girl try to survive on her own with the limited knowledge and supplies that she has.
And then you realize there's something following her…
(101) A book set in a school
The Grimrose Girls by Laura Pohl. I just finished reading it recently.
It takes place at a boarding school in central Europe, and deals with a set of friends trying to solve the mystery of their friend's death, only to realize they may be caught up in a curse that causes the girls to die in ways inspired by fairy tales.
It wasn't my favorite book ever, but it gave me the single most gruesome death I've read in a book in the last ten years, so well done there.
~
Thanks for the asks, Hailey! <3

This Episode Sees Kelly leading a shuttle team that crashes on a suddenly appearing planet with a Bronze Age society. After leaving, the crew discovers that the planet phases in to the universe for a short period every 11 days as 700 years passes on the planet.
They discover that their first visit has resulted in a religion that worships Kelly Grayson and has since grown into a theocracy  resembling Earth's middle ages.
Ozawa reprimands Mercer for omitting mention of the contamination, and orders no further contact with the planet. But Mercer and Grayson defy this order And return to the planet to Try To reveal the truth to the society's religious leader...
Will They Succeed In Convincing The Leader That Kelly Isn't A God?
Let's Find Out As We Watch Mad Idoltry...
The Episode Starts Afterhours As Ed Visits The Crew One By One To See If Any Of Them Are Interested In Having A Drink With Him In The Mess Hall But Gordon's Calling It A Night And John Is With...One Of The Hottest Women I've Ever Seen On This Show...
Tumblr media
I May Be Mad At Him For Being A Complete Moron With Talla But If Had Turco, I'd Probably Say Screw Drinks As Well...
Bortus Says That He And Klyden Are Going To Have A Drink After Putting Topa To Bed So He Joins Them Only For It To Lead Into A Dangerous Moclan Game Called Latchkum (I Hope I'm Spelling That Right)
Why Is It Dangerous? Well, Imagine Playing A Game Of Catch With A Knife Comes Out Of The Ball If You Don't Toss It As Soon As Possible...
Tumblr media
Returning To His Quarters Afterwards, Ed Bandages Up His Injured Hand And Calls Kelly To Ask Her If She Wants To Go Down To The Mess Hall For A Drink And She Says Yes...
However, Once They Meet Down There, Ed Admits That He's Doing Alot Of Thinking Since Darulio Was On-Board...
Oh, God, I Just Finally Got The Image Of Claire And Yaphit Having Sex Out Of My Head, Please Do Not Bring Up That Episode, Ed!
I'm Kidding Of Course, He Doesn't Bring That Up, But He Does Realize That Darulio Implied That It Was The Retepsian Mating Pheromone That Made Kelly Cheat On Him, So, Maybe It Wasn't Kelly's Fault...
So, He Thinks That Because Of That Possible Fact They Should Get Back Together By Going On A Date Sometime This Week...
And Kelly Thinks That's A Good Idea...
Next Day On The Bridge, The Crew Monitors An Uncharted Star, But When Bortus Picks Up Some Unusual Readings Emanating From Beyond The Star's Photosphere In Open Space...
Isaac Believes It To Be A Spaitial Anomaly But The Ship's Cannot Process It Clearly Enough, So Kelly Goes With Issac And Gordon On A Shuttle To Investigate It At A Closer Range...
But When They Do, A Planet Appears Out Of Nowhere, Causing The Ship To Lose Partial Helm Control And Forcing Them To Land On The Planet To Make Repairs...
Once They Land, Issac Contacts Ed And Discovers That The Instantaneous Transition From Vaccum To Atmosphere Caused An Overload In The Engine Core, Which Can Be Repaired In One Hour, Giving Kelly Time To Investigate The Planet, While Gordon And Issac Make The Repairs...
Climbing On Top Of A Small Peak, Kelly Finds A Small Humanoid Village Of Bronze Age Level Development, But When She Decides To Get A Closer Look, She Is Accidentally Spotted By A Little Girl Who Injures Herself...
Briefly Using A Device To Heal The Girl's Wound, Kelly Leaves As Soon As Other Villagers Arrive But The Damage Is Already Done And The Villagers Of The Planet Start Revering Kelly As A God...
Tumblr media
Huh, That's Funny, I Already Considered Adrienne Palicki As A Goddess The Minute She Appeared On Smallville As A Version Of Supergirl...
youtube
Contacting Disco Miniature Golfing Queen Stacy...I Mean Admiral Ozawa About The Situation, Ed...
Oh...Hi, Kelly, How Did You Get Back To The Ship?
Is There No Sense Of Time On This Show?
I Mean, I Know The Show Is Practically A Half An Hour But You Can't Be That Lazy To Not Show Kelly And The Others Getting Back To The Ship Or To Have A One Hour Later Mark On The Screen, Indicating To Your Audience That One Hour Has Passed And They're Back On The Ship...
Tumblr media
And I Know What People Are Thinking "But Duke, We're Not As Dumb As You Think We Are, We Can Figure That Out For Ourselves" Yeah, But If They're Trying To Tell A Cohesive Story (Which They Are), There Should Be No Loopholes Whatsoever, Show Don't Tell...
Anyway, Ed And Kelly Contact Lady Shiva About The Planet And She Tells Them To Stay In Orbit Another 72 Hours To Continue Scanning The Planet And If They Still Have No Clue What They're Dealing With By Then, They'll Send A Science Vessel To Take Over...
Asking Why Ed Didn't Tell Ozawa About The Child, He Tells Her That All She Did Was Help A Kid With A Wound Which Couldn't Have Caused Much Damage Much Less (What They Call) "Cultural Contamination"
Also I Love It When Ed Mentions That Union Policy Would Have Had Kelly Leave That Kid To Die, But First Off, The Kid Wasn't Seriously Injured, And 2, Kelly Didn't Really Need To Heal Her, A Band-Aid Could Have Made Her Feel Better For All We Know...
If She Was Being Attacked By A Wild Animal And She Was Dying From Her Wounds It Would Have Been A Different Story But This...This Was Not Worth Kelly Exposing Herself To A Kid And Using Technologically Advanced Machinery To Heal A Kid That Just Got A Cut On Her Forehead...
Leading Me Now To Ask One Question...
Tumblr media
Anyway, 12 Hours Pass And They Still Got Nothing On The Planet, However, When The Planet Disappears As Quickly As It Appeared, Issac Has A Theory That The Planet Is Locked In A Multiphasic Orbit Which Means The Planet's Orbit Is Locked Between 2 Universes...
This Leaves Them With 1 Option Wait For The Planet To Re-Enter Their Universe In 11 Days, Giving Kelly And Ed Time To Go On Their Date Which Rather Well As The 2 End Up Kissing..
But That Doesn't Stop The Writers Of This Show From Making A Dumb Decision With Those 2 Later...
Tumblr media
A Few Days Later, The Planet Reappears With "Radical Alterations" Including Much More Extensive Architecture And An Increase In Life Forms,Leading Ed And Kelly To Take An Away Team Comprised Of Gordon, Lamar And Alara Down To The Planet...
Once On The Planet They Discover That The Civilization Has Indeed Evolved Into A 14th Century City, This Leads Issac (On The Ship) To Conclude That Everytime The Planet Moves Out Of Their Universe And Into The Other It Causes A Time Acceleration For The Inhabitants...
Tumblr media
In Other Words, While It's Been 11 Days To Them, For The Planet It's Been 700 Years...
They Find Some Clothes To Blend In At A Nearby Cabin But When They're Spotted By The Farmer Who Owns The Cabin, They Try To Make A Run For It Only For The Farmer To Come Out To Ask Kelly To Bless Her Son...
With Ed Not Liking The Look Of That, They Get Dressed Only To Come Across People Who Have Been Crucified While Walking Toward Town, Talking With A Man Who's Come To Get The Bodies, Ed Asks Why These People Were Killed Only To Discover That They Were Killed For Forsaking The Word Of "Kelly"
Tumblr media
Returning To The Ship, They Tell Ozawa What Happened And She's Pretty Pissed That Ed Left It Out Of His Prior Report But Despite Him Saying That He Didn't Think It Was Of Consequence She Puts A Reprimand On His File And They're Not To Return To The Surface Until They Come To Them So Speak..
Rightfully Upset That People Are Being Killed In Her Name, She Tells Ed She Wants To Be Alone But Later, Ed Says Screw That, We're Going Back Down To The Planet...
Having 31 Minutes Until The Planet Phases Out Of Their Universe Again, They Enter The Church Of Kelly To Talk With The Leader Of The Village Named The Valondis And Tell Him Everything..
Of Course, He Doesn't Believe Kelly At First But After Showing Him The Device That Healed The Girl And How To Use It, He Starts Believing Their Story That Kelly Is Not A God...
But Unfortunatly One Of Valondis' Followers Kills Him To Keep The Word Of Kelly Going Because He's Afraid That In Revealing The Truth, Their Ability To Govern May Become Compromised And It
Tumblr media
So, When The Planet Re-Enters Their Universe, They Still Believe That Kelly Is Their God...
Wondering What The Hell Happened Down There, Kelly Believes There Wasn't Enough Time To Convince Everyone That She Wasn't A God So, She Suggests Remaining On The Planet After It Leaves The Universe In An Effort To Convince Them...
But With Ed Refusing Such An Idea As Kelly Would Die And/Or They'd Probably Think She Was Insane And Lock Her Up, Which Leads Issac To Suggest That He Remain On The Planet As His Construct Is Capable Of Enduring For Millions Of Years And He Doesn't Process The Passage Of Time Like They Do...
So, With Gordon Taking Issac Down To The Planet And Returning To The Ship Afterwards, The Planet Disappears, Fast Forward 11 Days And They Now Far More Advanced Than Before And A Ship Is Entering Their Orbit...
With The Ship Asking Permission To Come Aboard, They Grant Permission Leading To 2 Beings (1 Male And 1 Female) Beaming Aboard With Issac To Return Him...
Asking Isaac How He Convinced Them Kelly Wasn't A God, He Actually Tells Them, He Didn't Have To Do Anything, They Figured It Out On Their Own, Simply Stating It's All Apart Of Evolution She In Turn Did Not Poison Their Culture Cause It Flourished...
Oh, And I Love How They Say That Once They Evolve Past Them, They'd Be Interested Studying Them As The Orville Studied Them Either Way That'll Come Back In A Later Season, Though I Don't See Any Of These Guys Evolving Into That Goth Chick From Victorious Anytime Soon...
And I Know Elizabeth Gillies Has Done More Since Then But I'm Sorry It's Just The Way I've Always Seen Her, I Feel The Same Way With Ariana Grande, She'll Always Be That Brainless Ditz, Cat
Tumblr media
And What Better Way To End This Episode Than With Kelly Permanantly Ending Her Relationship With Ed Because She Believes That If They Were It Would Jeopardize His Command, His Operation Of The Ship And Their Friendship If They Were Together...
And Yeah, I Sadly Say That Because They Haven't Gotten Back Together Since And I Highly Doubt They Ever Will...
"But Duke, The Will They/Won't They? Relationship Is So Old We're Tired Of It!"
Oh, Well, I Want To See These 2 Get Together, If You Don't Like It Then Don't Watch The Show Especially If You're Tired Of The Same Old Storylines...
"But Duke, Kelly's Reasoning Makes Perfect Sense In Star Trek Logic..."
If We Were Talking Star Trek Logic About Becoming Emotionally Compromised In The Line Of Duty, Then They Wouldn't Let A Person Who Is Clearly Emotionally Compromised Over Losing A Loved One On Board Their Freaking Ship In Season 3!
And If They Can Allow A Person Like That On Their Vessel Then By Star Trek Logic, There's No Reason Why Kelly And Ed Can't Be Together!
Good Episode But In Retrospective The Ending Sucks!
I Do Like The Idea Of Early First Contact Gone Wrong But Despite The Story Itself Being Good The Ending Is Horrible When In The Long Run, The Will They/Won't They Relationship Goes Absolutely Nowhere, But Aside From That, I Say See It...
Till Next Time, This Is Duke, Signing Off

Magnum PI 4.18 - Shallow Grave, Deep Water review
My goodness this was good! Like I don’t even know where to begin with it, good.
Part of me didn’t even want to write this review, I just sort of wanted to sit with this episode and soak it in. But after some thinking I did realize I had stuff to say.
Tumblr media
I’m just going to list things that stuck with me, from the top of my head  in no particular order.
Getting a reason for Magnum being a bit stuck and not really changing as a character. Love that. HIm having it be it survivor guilt about Nuzo... it makes me... well not happy, but it makes me have feelings that are not-bad because they would explain a lot. Yeah. I like the idea of giving him some angst that is not just subtext and in this episode sort of having him deal with it.
So yeah, end was beautiful and I was legit all tearing up and stuff, feeling all the feels.
Tumblr media
Gordon and Magnum going at it. That was “nice”, I like conflict between people who are friends. It’s dynamic and interesting when we can see and understand where both of them are coming from.
Juliet be looking smoking in the dress walking away from the funeral. Magnum not so shabby either in his uniform!
Tumblr media
Nuzo’s ghost/Magnum’s subconscious being very pro Miggy and totally being like “you got a perfectly good flesh and blood person to talk to and yet...” and just all around pointing out he was being a wacky for not taking Higgy up on talking.
Magnum going “And I’m still here, alone.” That was as heartbreaking as the ending for me somehow.
Tumblr media
#sadboi
Higgy seeing the dead people in the shipping container. Also the contrast of her being almost a little excited as she helped Magnum to maybe find a treasure (and answers for Thomas...and getting to very hands-on help him get dive-ready) to reaction she’s having to the container. IDK, even though Gordon and Magnum look very troubled and upset, I thought Perdie nailed the murderous, sad and upset, horrified vibe.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the case... horrible. The teddy bear in the shipping container was heartbreaking, like how depressing and and unfair our world is (but sort of made for a beautiful tie in with the whole “life is unfair, death is unfair” at the end which... is there anything truer?)
Tumblr media
Our dynamic duo kicking ass at the end was brilliant though. That was a really cool and fast phased action sequence.
Tumblr media
Higgy being really in-tune with Magnum, realizing he knew about the guy and lied to Gordie, going after to check on him and then later offering to be there to talk. She’s really, as Nuzo and Magnum points out too, come a long way from the Ice Princess of the pilot.
Speaking of the pilot - the mirroring of the funeral with Nuzo’s funeral - that’s some good stuff.
Laura getting to make a come back. I like it, but I also didn't. Because where has she and Jake been for the past four years? They have not been in one scene and suddenly she’s there? If she’d  for example moved to the mainland that would have made more sense. But I kind of liked how they explained her distance away with “it hurt when I saw you but it’s better now?” too. So little torn, but it’s always nice to see old characters come back so I say it’s a win despite the whole 4+ years later...
We got to see TR Bell again (the boat not the woman). Boats and Miggy always make me a little extra excited these days. Higgy being a very hands-on helper is also...nice.
Tumblr media
And of course, the last few moments where we get the words from the promo (and they are actually about Juliet and Magnum rather than a fake-out) and he looks over at her and we end with his little sort of relieved smile; maybe he really can let go of the past and be happy. Only problem is now we have to wait 3 weeks to get the next episode!
Tumblr media
Anyways, those were some of my favorite bits just at the top of my head.
This was an episode with a lot of emotions for sure, and I liked that they had conflict on a lot of levels. Gordon and Magnum about him lying and pursuing the case differently, Magnum and Juliet about her wanting to be there for him and him holding back which really tied more in with the internal conflict of Magnum being a tiny bit worried Nuzo had done it. Which really was a big thing.
I almost would have liked to have Magnum find evidence that Nuzo did killed the guy (on his own) and having to struggle with his own feelings, who Nuzo was. Maybe even if he would compromise his own moral code by covering for Nuzo if he was a killer. It would have been a very different episode (and show even) if they had done that, and I’m glad they didn’t but it would have been interesting.
The flashback and Nuzo stabbing a guy and that being part of why Thomas was having some doubts... that was maybe the one scene I wasn’t too in love with. Because I feel like maybe during war this would be pretty standard? Or maybe that’s just because I’ve watched to much super brutal stuff lately so this barely registers as even a bit shocking?
Tumblr media
Magnum dealing with being lonely and separate despite being with the Ohana, which is sort of hinted at through out the show, (for some reason the cross-over episode when TC asks Juliet to dance and he watches them comes to mind), was shown and explored here more. Both with Nuzo in the car but also with the empty bar for their last talk. Him also going “I’m fine” to Higgy which has been what he always says when he’s not.
I do hope we get some follow up on this, him letting go of his guilt with Nuzo, talking to the guys about it and not just on his sort of revelation that he wants to peruse something with Juliet. I mean, my Miggy loving self of course wants all the Miggy fluff but some Magnum character development + bonding is always welcome.
Besides I feel like they have to plan to address the Miggy feels the last two episodes. Just a tiny bit. Why else have that last scene end like that? So I’m feeling real good about things to come.
Side note: Is it just me or do both Jay and Perdie look thinner and a bit tired as of late? As the mains (and Jay had Covid around this time right?) I guess they work some pretty grueling hours? I’m glad they get a break now for some RxR until next season.
Other fun things:
Gordy owning a motorcycle and showing up at a crime scene with it!
Kumu being awesome and just downing her drink.
Rick and TC struggling at the gym was nice comic relief, especially as they came to complain about it to Higgy (who could probably do five hours at the gym without dying).
Higgy looking fine with the bold lip look there at the end...

I guess I’m either just in the best mood or this was just one of the absolute best episodes of the entire series. Go Jay! Go the writing and production team and just everyone. I’m so excited for the two last episodes of the season and I can’t wait for sneak peeks and the promo for 4.19!

Quoth the Author: Our Next Book
Hello, everyone! I know I haven’t been here very much lately.  Well, in an effort to change that, I wanted to talk about a stream I’ve been running on Twitch lately, called Quoth The Author.
And if you’d like to catch up on the progress of our current book (The Midnight Library by Matt Haig), you can check out my youtube channel, where all previous episodes are posted.
But that’s not exactly what this post is about.  This post is about enlisting your help to pick the next book that we’ll cover! Below the cut, you’ll find the covers and blurbs of the five books we’re considering moving on to.  Please check them out and let me know in the replies (or the poll on facebook or twitter, depending on where you guys are coming from) which sounds the most intriguing to you.
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King:
Tumblr media
“Nine-year-old Trisha McFarland strays from the path while she and her recently divorced mother and brother take a hike along a branch of the Appalachian Trail. Lost for days, wandering farther and farther astray, Trisha has only her portable radio for comfort. A huge fan of Tom Gordon, a Boston Red Sox relief pitcher, she listens to baseball games and fantasizes that her hero will save her. Nature isn't her only adversary, though - something dangerous may be tracking Trisha through the dark woods.”
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones:
Tumblr media
“Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye.”
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman:
Tumblr media
“Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a perfectly normal boy. Well, he would be perfectly normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the world of the dead.
There are dangers and adventures for Bod in the graveyard: the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer; a gravestone entrance to a desert that leads to the city of ghouls; friendship with a witch, and so much more.
But it is in the land of the living that real danger lurks, for it is there that the man Jack lives and he has already killed Bod's family.”
Please make your selections, friends! I’m excited to be heading off on another literary journey with you!

The Right Chapter Nine || Aaron Hotchner x Fem Reader
Hello and happy Tuesday besties! ICYMI, I posted a bit of smutty goodness for all of you 18+ folks here. If you’d like to be added to my general Hotch fic taglist please let me know!
Read previous chapters of this fic here!
contains: canon-typical discussion of violence, food mention, therapy, cuddling.
wc: 2k
When you woke up the next morning, there were flowers in a vase on your bedside table. You’re smiling before you’ve even wiped the sleep away from your eyes, grabbing the sticky note that was stuck to the vase.
“Would’ve sent these to your desk, but figured that wouldn’t go unnoticed by a team of behavior experts. Hope they made you smile anyways. -AH
An expert on behavior and he was only hoping that he could make you smile, you laughed to yourself, rolling out of bed and finding Aaron in the kitchen with a mug of coffee, packing Jack’s lunch.
“When did you find the time to do that, Hotchner? Don’t you ever sleep?” You asked, and he looked up at you, breaking out in a smile.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” He shrugs, looking back down to his carrot slices as you cross the kitchen in pursuit of a cup of coffee. He places the knife down and tugs you closer to him by the palm of your hand so he can drop a kiss to the top of your head. It makes you feel warm all over. You hear the insistent smacking of small feet on hardwood and step away from Aaron in an instant, not wanting to be caught by Jack.
“Morning bud,” Aaron calls across the kitchen. Jack responds with a yawn, which makes you giggle. He smiles at you.
“Are you gonna have to go catch bad guys again?” He asks. “I missed you and dad.”
“Oh little man, we missed you too! We probably won’t get called away today but I can’t say for sure. If dad and I come home tonight, do you want to have a special movie night so we can all spend some time together?”
Jack nods ferociously, and practically starts buzzing with excitement. “Can we watch monsters inc?”
“Oh, that’s one of my favorites!”
“Dad?” Jack looked to his father for confirmation.
“Of course, bud. But you’d better eat all of these carrots I’m packing in your lunch if you want a treat.” Aaron smiled at Jack, who agreed easily. “Come on, we don’t want to miss the bus.” He said, ushering Jack out the door with a Danimals and an orange while you finished getting ready. You were struck for a moment by how easily you had slid into the Hotchner boys’ morning routines, and you realized that you would miss it once you found your own place. But it was for the best-- you hoped that you and Aaron would be serious enough to consider living together, but you didn’t want to force it too early in the relationship and cause problems.
When Aaron comes back, you’re dressed and ready to head off to work. He grabs his briefcase and suit jacket off of one of the chairs at the kitchen table.
“D’you eat?” He asked as he pulled his jacket over his arms.
“I had coffee. I’m not a big breakfast person.” You tell him, surprised that he hasn’t already noticed this about you.
“Grab a fruit.” He tells you.
“Did you eat?’ You ask him, and the tips of his ears turn pink. “Yeah, that’s what I thought, Hotchner. Why don’t you grab a fruit.” You teased, tossing him an orange from the bowl and tucking a banana into your purse as you stepped out the door, with Aaron locking up behind you. He wrapped his free arm around your waist as the two of you walked to the car.
“I have something to tell you, and you’re going to be mad at me.” Aaron confesses about halfway through your drive to work.
“Ah, so that’s what the flowers were about.” You said facetiously.
“No, the flowers were from your boyfriend, this news is from your boss.” He clarifies.
“Oh?” You asked, needing him to explain more.
“You’ve got a psych eval this morning.” He confesses and you groan.
“Ugh, Hotch, really?”
“Even if we could ignore what happened with Josh-- which, for the record, you shouldn’t-- you were held hostage by an unsub.”
“For like, twenty minutes!” You interrupted him.
“It’s bureau policy, dear. There’s nothing I can do about it.”
“And you can’t just say that you gave me the psych eval and I passed?”
“No,” he tells you, sighing. “For us to be together, we need to keep everything above board. Hopefully no one starts on a warpath when we decide we’re ready to share this, but if they do, I don’t want to give them any reason to undermine your professional credibility by arguing I gave you special treatment.”
You’re a little bit stunned by Aaron’s use of “when” rather than “if.” It’s not in a bad way, of course-- it’s actually, really, really good, to hear that he’s just as in it as you are, even if you hadn’t expressed it very well yet. The idea that he’s already thinking about the future-- even if it is your professional future, not exactly a white-picket-fence kind of future-- gives you butterflies. You realize you’ve waited too long to respond when Aaron speaks up again.
“I understand if that’s a lot for you to take on, or if that makes you rethink things. I wouldn’t hold it against you if you decided this wasn’t worth the potential professional issues.” He adds nervously, clearing his throat. You reach over and put a hand on his thigh.
“I think you’re worth the risk,” you smile at him, and watch him release a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“Thanks for coming in,” Laura, one of the FBI’s resident psychologists said as you settled into the couch in her office. You err on the side of politeness and decide not to point out that you didn’t really have a choice.
“Not a problem,” you smiled at her.
“So how are you feeling?” She asked.
“I’m good. I’m happy to be back at work, and to get my field clearance back. I’ve missed it.” You tell her.
“That’s right, you’d been removed from the field for a head injury.” She said, peering over your file. “Service related?”
“No, I fell down a flight of stairs,” you lied, hoping she couldn’t read you as easily as Aaron could.
“Hmm, so you travelled with the team even though you weren’t cleared for field work?” She asks, and you’re pretty sure you’re not imagining the judgement in her tone.
“I didn’t go into the field. I stayed at the police station, in compliance to orders from my doctor and from Chief Hotchner. Unfortunately, the field came to me,” you attempted to make a joke. She didn’t laugh.
“Was it not possible for your duties to be completed from Quantico?”
“No, it wasn’t. The behavioral analysis unit works as a team-- we’re able to determine profiles as successfully as we do because we collaborate. My efforts, and the work of my team, would have been severely hindered if I had stayed behind.” You answer mechanically, trying, and most likely failing, to not sound defensive. “I fail to see how that’s relevant to my experience with Alec Gordon.”
“I’m just trying to determine if you’re engaging in a pattern of self-endangering or careless behavior.” Laura answers honestly.
“I can assure you that my attitude regarding my work and the work of my team is anything but careless.” You bite back.
“You came back to work very quickly after your concussion.” She says, and it’s not a question, so you don’t take the bait. “Any particular reason for that?”
“I felt ready to return, and Chief Hotchner was willing to accommodate my need to work partial days until I was fully recovered, so on the advice of my physician I returned to work on a modified schedule.”
“Agent, I don’t need to tell you that withholding information in our session or on the forms you filled out prior to our appointment today, will only hurt you.”
“With all due respect, I haven’t withheld anything and I resent the implication.”
“Very well, agent. I will have a complete evaluation sent to your supervisor by the end of the business day.”
“Thank you for your time,” you smiled, trying to make it look real.
“The door is always open, agent.”
“So, you kind of beat me to the punch this morning,” Aaron tells you as you’re walking out of the office together.
“What are you talking about?” You asked.
“Well, the flowers were a part of my master plan to get you to agree to come to dinner with me tonight, but it seems you’ve made other arrangements with my son.” He smirks at you as you both climb into his SUV.
“I guess now you know where you stand in the ranking of Hotchner boys.” You tease him.
“It won’t get me ahead of Jack, I know, but will you let me take you out to dinner tomorrow night?”
“Aaron,” you laughed. “You don’t need to take me out to dinner.”
“Yes, I do.” He tells you.
“We already live together. You’re going to have dinner with me regardless of whether or not we eat it at a restaurant.” You tell him, gesturing to his place as he parked the car.
“Maybe so, but you’ve already decided that we won’t be living together much longer. I care about you, and I want to spend time with you, and I’d like to take you out to dinner.” He said, shifting to face you now that the car was stopped.
You rolled your eyes fondly, feeling yourself blush. “I’ll allow it.”
“God, it’s like pulling teeth,” Aaron muttered sarcastically, breaking out into a grin as you laughed.
You both got out of the car and headed inside, where Jess and Jack were working on a puzzle at the kitchen table.
“Dad!” Jack says, looking up to see his father and abandoning the puzzle, launching himself into his father’s arms.
“Hey, buddy. Did you have a good day?”
“Yes, and I ate all my carrots so that I could have a special treat while we watch Monsters Inc.”
“He’s been waiting to tell you that all afternoon,” Jess laughed, standing up from the table and crossing to you to give you a hug. When Haley died, you and Jess got a lot closer, through Jack. “It’s good to see you,” she says as she squeezes you.
“You too.” You smile. “I’ve got to go change into my special movie night clothes,” you smirked, leaving Jess, Jack and Aaron in the kitchen.
“Jack, why don’t you go put on your pajamas, and we’ll start the movie in a little bit?” Aaron suggested, and Jack scampered off towards his room.
“Do you plan on ever telling that girl how you feel about her, or are you just going to look at her like she hung the stars in the sky for the rest of your life?” Jess asks Aaron bluntly.
“I can’t possibly be that obvious.”
“Aren’t you literally a behavior expert?”
“It’s being handled, Jess.” He assures her with a quick grin as you emerge from your room in soft flannel pants and a tank top.
“Do you want to stay, Jess? We’re just gonna order a pizza and veg out.”
“I wish I could. But you kids have fun.” She said, looking between you and Aaron. Jack comes running out of his room to give his aunt a kiss goodbye and you all settle on the couch.
Jack inserts himself in the middle of you and Aaron on the couch, a slice of pizza on a paper plate in front of him with the promise of ice cream later on. Aaron’s arm rests across the back of the sofa and his hand plays gently with the hair at the nape of your neck. You tilt your head in his direction, pulling Jack into your lap so you can scoot closer as the movie plays on. Jack falls asleep before you can even get him his ice cream, and you take the opportunity to rest your head on Aaron’s shoulder, his arm wrapping around your shoulder and tracing comforting patterns into the skin of your upper arms until the credits roll.

Cobra Kai 4.1-4.4 Thoughts
I’m through ep 4.4 of “Cobra Kai” and I’m loving it!!! :D It’s off to a great start. Would’ve watched more but my family’s getting ready to have a safe New Year’s thing tonight so can’t watch more till tomorrow but a LOT already has happened!!!
First off I’m loving Daniel and Johnny working together and all the kids training under them both.  It feels more like any other sports as you do have to know both offense and defense strategies and normally there’s coaches for both on teams. Daniel also teaching Miguel was fantastic, as was Johnny with Sam!!! :D Johnny and Sam even more so for me as for those that follow me (or if you can tell by my icon) that I love Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle and this weirdly is similar to how she is not only with her dad Jim but also with Bruce Wayne/Batman. Her and Bruce form a close father/daughter bond too even though she also still has both her parents and he is her mentor (and I’m also going to get this too next year in her DC movie with Leslie Grace & Michael Keaton!!!).
Then I’m loving seeing more of Tory’s story and I feel so much for her. Glad Amanda is realizing too what she’s really like and that Sam is in the wrong at times too about this.  Then glad Hawk/Eli is also really remorseful for how he acted last season and is mending things with everyone.  All of them working on the new sparring mat is awesome too.
Then Anthony finally getting a storyline and is a bully like Johnny used to be!!! :o Even has his own version of the OG Cobras.  I already love Kenny too and that he’s the younger brother of Robby’s friend from JV, and that Robby has taken him under his wing and helping him too.
Then I’m happy Johnny and Carmen are fully in a relationship now and they dealt with him meeting with Ali least season and he’s fully committed to her now. Plus, Rosa and her friends are all for it!!! LOL Now to see Miguel’s reaction.
Then of course Thomas back as Terry!!! :D I’m already loving him and he’s doing amazing!!! And slowly getting back to his evil ways.  Also seeing him shirtless it was obvious that he’s not in his 70s as he still looks too good. LOL :D Also so happy to see Barrett and Nick back as young Kreese and Terry and to find out Terry’s dad not only originally owned the company but was disapproving of Terry’s choices. And I like seeing him train Robby (see next paragraph LOL).
Then the flashback with little Johnny!!! :D He’s so adorable and I feel so bad for him as all he wanted was his dad back!!! And I freaked out seeing that box of his dad’s things as I swear I remember Terry having that camera in the Vietnam flashbacks last season and that’s he, Kreese, and their other friend used to take that photo!!! :D I’m one of the ones that fully believe Terry likely is Johnny’s dad and seeing that camera and the military style boots just added even more to that!! :D If that is the case those it changes a lot of what I thought happened between him and Laura (possibly his dad forced him to leave or Terry felt he was a bad father and left similar to Johnny and Robby) and that he possibly never told Kreese about any of this either and why he stayed away while Kreese was teaching Johnny. We’ll see what happens but that felt like huge pieces of evidence.
As always loving the soundtrack too and the pop culture references. Amanda loving “Outlander” cracked me up as Jamie Fraser is more similar to Johnny at times. LOL And Johnny not caring for “Top Gun” but loving Val Kilmer’s Ice Man!!! LOL Then with Miguel listening to Daniel’s favorite 80s music and seeing Daniel’s music is more my Mom’s!!! LOL :D I always joked how Johnny’s music is my Dad’s and now there’s Mom’s. Excited to see where this goes next tomorrow!!! :D

It's A Sin (Darren x Jeanie)
Word Count: 770
Warnings: Smut, infidelity, language
A/N: Honestly @robertsheehanownsmyass this is your fault.  Because Dress You Up In My Love wasn’t enough
Tumblr media
Darren's asleep on the pull-out couch in the suite’s living room. He and Jeanie had called it quits somewhere after his fourth or fifth phone call. She tried to give him head, but Mary was in a panic over someone outside her window. Again. He went down on Jeanie, but then Nidge called.
“I don't know when you and Tommy became lap dogs to such a ferrety little man. Run your own operation. John’s dead,” she had said over her shoulder while throwing a tee shirt and flannel pants on.
“Not flannel pants,” Darren had half whinged.
“Yes flannel pants. Nigel called here four times, you answered four times. My pussy should be more important than one of the weasel brothers from Roger Rabbit.” She had tossed Darren a pair of actual boxers. “I've got a GREAT pussy. One of you assholes should realize that.
Darren had pulled the boxers on, “I had a taste. I want it,” he wrapped his arms around her waist and brushed her hair aside. He kissed her neck. “I'll get ye going again.”
“No. Grab one of Gordon’s shirts. He's actually coming back tonight. Legs closed for business. I'll be back in March with Laura and Ewan. You can sleep on the couch.”
So that's what Darren was doing at 4am when he felt the mattress bend under someone's weight. The smell of her. The way her hair fell across his chest and face when she leaned over his ear while he laid on his side.
“ I want you to fuck me,” Jeanie whispered
Darren opened his eyes and looked into hers. The wanton way she started at him. The way she didn't care if they got caught. That Gordon was in the other room. Her husband who came in jovial but smelled of whisky. And whether Jeanie caught it or not, Darren did. He smelled like someone else’s snatch.
He made to kiss Jeanie, but she dodged his mouth. “I said fuck me, not make love.”
She situated herself beside Darren on her stomach, already naked. Her arms draped over the pillow, nothing covering her so that her body was exposed to him. Wanting.
Darren crawled on top of Jeanie, one leg between hers to part them. He laid his weight on top of her back with his one arm stretched across her so that he could clasp her small hand. Their fingers entwined as his free hand lifted her hips just slightly.
In place now, he took the head of his cock and teased her sex. Stroked it wet so she ached for it. She let out a whimper into the pillow, and Darren kept on. Rubbing it along the outside while he breathed heavily onto her skin. Forehead pressed between her shoulder blades as he inched inside finally.
“Do it,” she begged. Her ass reflexively arched upwards into his pelvis. “Fuck me harder”
“You're so bloody tight,” Darren maintained a whisper. With a jerk he buried himself deep within her.
Jeanie bit into the pillow to prevent herself from crying out. She clutched Darren's hand with a ferocity as he began pounding into her. Then he caught her other hand, and she clawed at that one too. Her face turned to see out of the corner of her eye as he rutted and bucked untamed.
Darren let his sweaty forehead rest on Jeanie's cheek as he pounded away. Whatever angle she maintained allowed him to work a hand under their bodies now. Hers followed, encouraged him to fuck her with his hand too.
“Like earlier,” she tried to instruct. “work my clit.”
“Jaysus, I didn't know you were this fecking dirty.”
Darren obliged Jeanie. Used his fingers and cock to make her cum. The passing thought of “Rosie would never.” before remembering she wasn’t speaking to him. Maybe she wouldn't, but Jeanie fucking was.
Then he came. Quicker than he thought, but only because it felt so fucking good inside of her. Minutes later as Darren dragged his mouth from one side of her back to the other, trying to catch his breath in between, Jeanie buried her face in the pillow and made somewhere between a squeal and a scream.
Her body relaxed, face turned out again so she could breathe. Darren tried to kiss her again, and again Jeanie thwarted him. She begged him off and stood up, unashamed for once to be naked in the light from the street.
“You should go after you wake up. I think it's safe.”
“T’anks?”
“I just don't want to do something stupid like fall for you.” Then she was gone.
