more zayn and y/n moments?? i feel like they have the most adorable friendship everrr ❤️❤️❤️
love your work ❤️🔥
oh there's so many!
So you all know when the band first started, all Zayn would say is Vas Happening?! Well, YN's thing was always saying Aye Oh!
So whenever the cameras would point to them during their fetus era, he would throw an arm over her shoulder and they'd just yell their sayings super duper loudly while making a funny face.
...
During the band's third tour, the two of them would spend some time with their vocal coach in one of the smaller green rooms to go over their harmonies together.
The song they loved to perform together was Right Now because they shared the chorus.
So when they would hit those harmonies perfectly (like they always did), they would give each other a nod of approval, a smug look on their faces before giving each other a high five.
...
YN knew that while he usually presented himself with a hard exterior, she knew that he was a soft teddy bear once you got to know him. One of the activities that she would partake in with him was art. She knew she was shit at it, but she also knew that he loved it.
So during the long rides on the tour bus crossing from one city to another, sitting next to each other during an album signing/meet & greet, or stuck in their hotel rooms, she'd be there with a piece of paper and some type of writing utensil for them to draw whatever came to mind.
There was even an interview in 2014 when they were doing for their new book "Who We Are" where Zayn spent the majority of the time drawing on YN's arm. With a ball point pen, the beautiful mandalas he drew on her skin left her beaming and utterly speechless.
...
There's no denying the fact that those two were the most fashionable members of the band. With Zayn's cool, suave, bad boy style and YN's good girl aesthetic, photoshoots with them were easy and right on the money.
...
For the Night Changes music video, YN was the stand-in for basically all of the boys (except Liam who actually had his girlfriend on set). With each date, she took on the role with some seriousness, acting as if the boys were really taking her on a date.
For Zayn's part, YN actually dressed in a formal black dress to really get into character.
Needless to say, she really got a kick out of making her usually quiet band member laugh throughout the shoot. Like when Ben Winston directed him to offer her some of his spaghetti, she let out a playful sigh of relief, "Yes please. Do you see the sad fookin' excuse of a salad they gave meh?"
Or when her "ex-boyfriend" interrupted her date with Zayn, she actually played along and had an argument with him with a fake backstory she made up: "Johnathan?! What are yeh doing here? I told you to leave me alone. No, I'm over you. No. I'm sorry but I just can't listen to you rant about your Barbie doll collection any longer!"
And when the ex-boyfriend dumps the food on Zayn, as soon as the director yelled cut!, YN quickly got up from her seat and got all up in the building of a man's face (really his chest from how tall the actor was) and says with a deep voice, "the fook man!" But her facade lasted all but 2 seconds before her and everyone just burst out laughing.
...
Since the band's formation, Zayn always had and continues to have a soft spot for YN.
He still views her as a little sister and while they don't talk as much as they used to during their time in 1D, there's not a single birthday, holiday, anniversary, etc. that hasn't gone by without a text between the former band members.

Round 1 - Side A
Tumblr media
Galahad art credit @spiralstain
Propaganda below ⬇️
Junk Rat
I wish his Catholicism meant if he got killed in game it would take him 3 days to respawn
Galahad
OKAY SO . "Galahad (played by Jonny d'Ville): a travelling preacher/religious zealot who is told to sit in the Siege Seat by Merlin, and discovers the fact that Fort Galfridian is falling into the star Avalon. He sparks the quest for the GRAIL, and willingly goes to his death to overcome its final defences." DUDE SAT IN THE CHAIR THAT IS KNOWN FOR KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE HIS CRUSH [MERLIN] [AKA HANGED MAN] [AKA DRUMBOT BRIAN] TOLD HIM TO . SORRY I THINK THATS REALLY FUNNY. he found out the whole shitshow of a spacestation he lived on was gonna fall into the sun and he went around yelling about it incomprehensibly and got fucking gunned down trying to get the GRAIL and just kept going through the gunfire because of how Religious [tm] he was . he died . in once and future king it just "galahad's blind faith" . also hellfire goes really hard . he is the definition of going insane with the knowledge of the universe . also jonny dville played him thats bonus points
There was a prophet. The prophet gave three separate people three separate instructions. 1. Stop being racist 2. Love your son 3. Sit in the Chair That Makes People Insane Galahad received number three. He was the only one who followed the instructions. He sat in the Chair That Makes People Insane, saw the sun for the first time, and immediately starts preaching about how everyone will burn in hellfire
i dont know anything about this guy i just wanna help make Kai happy please dont like not count my submission just because i dont know anythinf except for the Kills You Chair im trying my best im sorry 😭
his themesong is called hellfire and it slaps btw go listen to it. anyways he is my blorbo blingus he is Deeply unwell i could fix him but also whatever is wrong with him is incredibly fascinating to watch. a robot dude who's been hanging from the gallows since forever told him 'hey go sit in the Chair That Kills People Who Sit In It' and he was like 'I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT MY ENTIRE LIFE'. the getting-his-brain-fried thing definitely made him worse but he was also clearly kind of fucked up before that. his death is probably one of my favorite scenes in any mechs album. maybe just straight up my favorite. ahem. SAY WHAT YOU WILL ABOUT FAITH, BUT IT CAN HAVE POWERFUL EFFECTS ON THOSE THAT HAVE IT. IT CAN KEEP YOU FROM FALTERING AS THE BULLETS START TO SLAM INTO YOU. IT CAN KEEP YOU WALKING AS YOU LEGS ARE SHOT TO BLOODY STUMPS. IT CAN KEEP YOU LAUGHING AS YOUR LUNGS ARE FILLED WITH SHRAPNEL AND LEAD. IT CAN KEEP YOU SMILING AS HALF YOUR FACE IS BLOWN AWAY. IT CAN KEEP A MAN LIKE GALAHAD STANDING TALL UNTIL THE GUNS. CLICKED. DRY. anyways go listen to high noon over camelot <3
my friends my people my... flock I HAVE HAD A VISION!! A VAST FIERY ORB FLOATIN IN AN ENDLESS VOID!! and there so small so feagile US!!! BUT FALLIN FALLIN FALLIN INTO THE FLAMES!!! your soul is connected to the world youre in youre draggin it down with the weight of your sin surrounded by temptation and y'just give in we're fallin into the flames OF THAT FIRE THAT FIRE THAT HEEEEELLLLLLFIIIRE YOUR BROW BECOMES SLICK AS YOU PERSPIRE YOU THINK YOURE THIRSTY NOW WAIT TIL IT GETS DRIER AND YA FEEL THE HEAT OF THE FLAMES OF THAT FIRE THAT FIRE THAT HELLFIRE YOUR SICK AND SINFUL LIES WILL BUILD A FUNERAL PYRE YOUR PERVERSION SCARS THE STATION SON ITS GONAN FRY HER AND WE ALLLLLL FALL INTO THE FLAMES... oh i have SEEN DAMNATION MY BROTHERS!! ive FELT its searing heat within my VERY BONES !!!!!!! but there is a way me be saved... "OH TELL US FATHER GALAHAD, TELL US" I HEAR YOU CRY "IS IT PIETY IS IT PURITY IS IT VIRTUE?" NO!!! ONLY WAY TO SAVE US NOW IS THE HOLY GRAIL ITSELF... HAHAHAHAHHAAAA.... WELL THAT ORB OF DAMNATION MAKES THE SUN SEEM PALE YOURE QUITE CORRECT TO QUIVER YOU ARE RIGHT TO QUAIL THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE US IS TO FIND THAT GRAIL OR WE ALL FALL INTO THE FLAMES OF THAT FIRE THAT FIRE THAT HELLFIRE YOUR SKIN STARTS TO SIZZLE AS YOU EXPIRE YOU CLAIM TO BE VIRTUOUS BUT YOURE A LIAR !!!!! AND YOU FEEL THE HEAT OF THE FLAMES ... i said HEEEELLLLFIIIIRE HEEEEEEEELLLLFIRE HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLFIIIIIREEE HEEEEEEELLLLLLFIIIIIIRE OF THAT FIRE THAT FIRE THAT HELLFIRE AT THE HEART OF THAT INFERNO THAT WILL NEVER TIRE IVE SEE THE END IS NIGH AND DAMNATIONS NIGHER OH WE ALL FALL INTO THE FLAMES
Ok i know this is kind of a shot in the dark because hes so obscure but i need to speak my truth. Hes so insane. The narrator calls him a “holy roller.” He has a vision which is meant to tell him that the place they live is LITERALLY going to get burnt to a crisp because its slowly falling into the sun. But hes like Oh my god i just had a vision of hell i need to save everyone from eternal damnation. And he happily gets killed and turned into a pile of slop because he believes its what he was “chosen to do” he quite literally dies for his religion. Hes also quite funny. I like him. Thank you

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to these guys and everyone I’ve met/made friends with over the last couple years because of them, I got to see them three times in the last 13 months and from not being allowed to see them and then getting three times is insane
I’m just going to do a little run down as to why these boys mean so much to me through albums and eras
self-titled as an era as well as notes - help me relive my teen years , help me relive as the teenage boy that I didn’t get to live (being trans I was raised as a female and my teen years where very weird obviously) , but since coming out I’ve made the connection that these albums really help me feel like the teenage boy I was meant to be and I couldn’t thank the guys more for that and I know there probably never going to here it but it’s wild that even though I’m never actually going to be able to go back and fully relive my teenage years these albums do help me.
I like it when you sleep- I don’t know what it is about iliwys but it helps me feel so confident in my sexuality and gender around others , it helps me care less what others may think of it. I can just be me and not be bothered about others thoughts. Be the openly little gay boy that I am and not care that others may veiw it as icky or be homophobic toward me it just keeps me safe and grounded and I don’t feel like I have to hide because of this.
a brief Inquiry(can’t spell sorry)- ABIIOR - has helped me care more for the environment and schooling and helped me care more about my knowledge for other things like art and writing , creativity in all forms (I cared before but like now with this album) , I’ll stay up and learn about art and history and feel like I’m expanding my brain learning about the world around me and how things used to be - I just feel smarter
but the best of all really is
Being Funny - to me this one brings the best out because it really makes me feel like I’ve grown as a person and that everything around me has grown with me , as have the people around me , I’ve gained so much confidence and done things I never thought id do , I’ve grown up with the guys because of this era , I feel like I’m growing into the gentleman that I want to be and it just makes me feel so grown. I can do everything I dream of and do it to the best of my abilities
so I wanna thank the guys SO MUCH for helping me through everything in life

Hello I wanted to talk to you about something. Would like to hear your opinion on it because I really respect it. So on Twitter Trumanblack was trening lately and I saw people being mad that truman Black came back.
Here's couple of tweets, to show you the perspective:
,He is escaping the reality through this character. Being sincere and open is the way to live life not hiding behing fictional characters. He needs to grow up and realize where his priorities are.
Ofc, we do not know him. His choice, his life.
Or
what the fuck happened matty. I don't understand what you're doing right now. should have left Truman in the trash. I don't get it.
Or
This. It seems he was used to dealing with difficult emotions through avoiding them in stage character (he admitted to this in an interview recently) & he wanted to ditch the character & embrace the emotions/be sincere things maybe got too raw & real so he is back in charakter
I'm sorry this message is so long. I'm just thinking about it all. Do you think 'matty' is gone and he will be acting and all that in the upcoming tour? Cause I wouldnt like it and it won't be good for him too :/
Again sorry this is so long
No, I mean, this is an interesting topic that I think we should 100% get into to "warm up" for the tour. I bet we'll have even more to say once we start getting content from the first new shows in September. (omg not too far away now aaaahhhh), so everyone feel free to chime in, but basically, here is how I think about it ( this is probs gonna be long. apologies in advance. im gonna add a "keep reading" so i dont destroy y'all feeds).
The first thing we need to remember is that Matty's "Truman Black" persona pre-dates the ATVB tour. He's always been "Truman Black." He's always been a jokester, a meme lord, a bit chaotic, a bit sexy, a pastiche or caricature of himself.
The question, then, is why? Why does he do this?
For several reasons. And he's been nothing but honest with us about them.
From as early on as 23 years old, when ST first started blowing up and the boys cultivated a following, Matty became acutely aware of the spotlight and the way that fans idealized and idolized him. Sexually desired him, saw him as this rockstar figure. And it made him uncomfortable because, well, no real human being could live up to such a fantasy, right? That's really what the song "Love Me" is about. He experienced this during album 1 and instantly wrote about it for album 2. like thats how strongly he felt it. He's more eloquent about it than I can ever be, so I'm going to link you to his explanation of "Love Me."
so, as he's pointing out in his explanation, he plays this kinda ridiculous character to "subvert" expectations. right? even in the mv, he has cardboard cut outs of sex symbols and heart throbs like Harry Styles etc. and he takes his shirt off and stands next to them and makes out with them and all that. Usually, the normal rockstar-fan relationship is that we project our fantasy upon the rockstar and the rockstar accepts it obligingly. But Matty's going "well this is really kinda silly, and it makes me feel sooo disconnected from myself if i turn into this person everyone thinks i am, so what am i gonna do? oh I'll just lean into the silliness." so if he can't do the "fake authenticity" of the cliched rockstar, hes gonna do a very authentic fakeness of being loud, and silly goofy funny messy larger than life, etc.
He explains it here (I've cued it up to the right moment in the video). He's right, if you're a stranger and you know nothing about him and you see him behaving in a Truman-black-esque way, you'd think "wow what an arrogant piece of shit this dude is." BUT if you realize that he's like "i KNOW that you all think of me this way. And YOU (the fans) know that I know that you think that way." we become in on the joke.
You know what im gonna say here. Postmodernism. LMAO. No, but for real. Postmodern art naturally has this "meta" habit. It's art that knows itself as art. It's aware that it's not real. Like movies that are constantly referring to themselves as movies. breaking the experience of illusion for you by constantly reminding you that what you are watching has been filmed and edited. it's not real life. Thats what Matty does with the "rockstar persona" constantly reminding you "it's not real. im just a character made up in all our heads. I'm actually a normal human being but my job is kinda fuckin mental."
So, I think those 4 points, from VERRRYYY early in Matty's career are the genesis of Truman Black. Thats what "Truman Black" is based on.
You could ask, well, if Matty has been this way from the very beginning how come it's such a problem now? how come this whole thing is a new issue??
I think its the perfect storm of this year.
The ATVB show was designed to push the blurry lines between Matty Healy/ Truman Black to their very limits cuz they added extra layers of meta-theatricality to an already meta situation haha. He plays himself in the couch scene, and the raw meat scene, but he's also kind of playing a symbolic version of himself that's supposed to apply to a lot of straight men, but then the show is also about the lines between his personal and his public lives.
Then he goes and does the Truman Black rockstar shit in the second half of the show. So, the tour really could've been called "Matty Healy: At His Very Truman Black-esque" and it would have been accurate. Like he took this concept and stretched it to see how far it could take him.
Then of course you have the podcast thing, the taylor swift thing, the twitter cancelation cycles, etc etc etc.
There were so many new eyes on him. and so much out of context (remember, meta-theatricality needs context. needs the audience to be in on the joke. we have to know 'oh hes making fun of himself being a rockstar') cuz if we don't have the context he really comes off as a guy who's in love with himself and his rockstar status haha.
Now that alllll of this background is out of the way, lets discuss the questions that you've brought up.
Is he Matty or is he Truman Black?
I think lots of people didn't notice that when he threw out the lab coat that was labeled "truman black" in the video, he wasn't serious. he instantly starts doing the robot dance, flipping the camera off with his finger, acting disruptive by riding the trolley thingy. All Truman Black behavior: mischief, breaking rules, etc. so it was a "meta" joke. he tossed the character then acted like the character. a contradiction. ironic. Truman Black's never been gone! he and Matty are intertwined necessarily. you can't separate one from the other.
Is he gonna be acting at all in S...ATVB?
Yes. He will. He's working with Brad Troemel whose sense of humor is very close to Matty's and who loves irony and postmodernism.
Does he use Truman Black to "hide from difficult situations" or to "run from his emotions" or whatever that tweet was saying? no. He uses it to deliver social critique. About masculinity being ridiculous, about our relationship to artists and the fantasy of perfection in Rockstar cliches, about performative wokeness.
Those are the very same beliefs that Matty Healy believes in. hes always criticizing these things in interviews and speeches and stuff. So, no, hes not hiding behind the character to disassociate he IS the same guy, just a slightly less dramatized and exaggerated version.Thats why he doesn't completely turn it on or off at any time. Thats why it's not that he was willing to stop it for a relationship and then start it again when it didn't work out. Thats not how Matty operates at allll.
He didn't throw out his belief that performative wokeness is harmful and stupid, he didn't throw out his belief that leftist masculinity is confusing, he didn't change who he is at his very core just to be mr nice guy, or to be sincere, or to get his dick sucked off by Taylor Swift, or whatever these people think is the reason. He's always been this way; he very likely will always be this way. Thats just how he makes art and how he thinks about the world.
He's always BEEN open to embracing emotions and being sincere. "I love you, don't you mind?" "we're only human we're just like you man" "I'll quote on the road like a twat," "im petrified of being alone, its pathetic," "im just pissed off because you pied me off after your show," "you pick a fight and i'll define it" "i said its cool i was messing but its true," "pretend that i know what it is (i wasn't listening)" "sorry that I quite like seeing myself on the news. im sorry that im someone that i wish i could change, but ive always been the same."
would an emotionally stunted anti-sincerity guy write ANY OF THESE LYRICS? idk, you tell me.

it's (not) funny to see so many people take what hoseok said in the commentary to j-hope in the box and make it about album format again. how is that your first thought? were you perhaps waiting for some kind of confirmation that you were right all this time to get back at "solos"? well sorry but that's not what you got because do you really think he was like "i saw people complaining that they are unable to buy my music because it's not available anywhere and it hurt me" like be for real for one second!!!
if he had talked anywhere at ALL about how the weverse albums and lack of distribution were his idea that he loved then maybe you could make that argument but he literally never talked about that!! do you know what he DID talk about, extensively? do you know what he put his heart and soul into?? that's right, his music. he's talking about his MUSIC and the "fans"' reactions to it, probably mainly in korea, how is that not the common conclusion here?
did we not see how the fandom treated his album vs every single one that came after, especially face? did we not lose him MUTLIPLE awards? he's still stuck at like 600k albums sold because guess what, people refused to buy it! remember how this fandom that only likes pop music kept saying that jitb is not their kind of music and refused to listen to it? or the way jitb left korean charts after being there for like five minutes?? remember what he said after mama awards (that he lost!!) about how he knew he couldn't please everyone? maybe he was talking about all that??? about how people reacted to his ART? idk just a thought!

So I have somehow managed to delete this post instead of posting it three times now, because I am very talented. That said - hi there @novafire-is-thinking and thank you so much for the tag, sorry it’s taken me so long to reply! Always good to hear from you - I tried to theme my list along transformers too. :)
Rules: List ten songs you’ve been enjoying and tag ten people.
Two Minutes by The Amazing Devil (yt | spotify)
So funny story, I made a DND character initially based off Brainstorm and somewhere down the line he turned into Ratchet. This is on his playlist and effectively serves as one of his theme songs, and reminds me a lot of everyone’s favourite grumpy medic too. It’s one of very few songs that I’ve found that actually fits him, I think, and I definitely am gonna cut myself off here before I go into a rant analysing this song from the perspective of IDW Ratchet.
Angelica’s Room by War is Over (yt | spotify)
This one’s on here for two reasons. First of all, I’m teaching myself guitar, and this is one of the only songs I’ve managed to learn well enough that I can more or less sing and play it at the same time, which of course means I’ve listened to it about a thousand times. Secondly, it reminds me of Chromedome - it’s about growing up and changing from who you used to be, and my favourite lines in it are ‘When you look down on me/will you promise to/forget who I once was/ and know me for who I’ll be?’ and every time I hear them I think of OG Rewind and Domey in the aftermath of choosing not to forget him.
Adhd by Truslow (yt | spotify)
This one’s on my Scavengers playlist, and the title probably gives away who it reminds me of. What can I say? It’s a cheerful song and it makes me smile, very much so like Misfire himself.
Moscow by Autoheart (yt | spotify)
First off, Autoheart is one of my top bands (both because they have wonderful songs and because their singer is one of relatively few artists who stays reliably within my vocal range.) Moscow is on here specifically because the vibes and energy reminds me of the Lost Light crew and the reasons that I love them. Fair warning - it’s really catchy, and I take no responsibility if it gets stuck in someone’s head.
What Have You Become? by MNQN (yt | spotify)
This song is on two playlists: Soundwave’s, and a TF OC of mine who I am not yet quite self-indulgent enough to make his friend but who I nevertheless think would have been a good friend for him. The album art also matches TFP Soundwave’s colour scheme, but that’s not the point - this one is very atmospheric, Tron Legacy type vibes with a fun little added emphasis on internal mutation into something unrecognisable! :)
Conspiracy of Silence by The Swoons (yt | spotify)
Like the song above, this song is on Soundwave’s playlist and another TF OC’s playlist. (Different OC this time - the previous one was a Decepticon general, but this one is for a Neutral-ish Empurata’d ex-medic who has some... let’s call them issues.) Something about the way the song gets super dramatic and then goes quiet is just a really good vibe, I think.
Teach Me To Fight by YONAKA (yt | spotify)
Obligatory song off my Whirl playlist, hehe. Not only is this song great for blasting through headphones when I wanna feel like a badass or quiet rage, it also fits him well. The whole ‘let’s make this public, let’s take it outside’ always makes me think of him meeting Cyclonus and immediately starting a fight with him in IDW.
All Is Well (Goodbye, Goodbye) by Radical Face (yt | spotify)
This one might be cheating a little, since it’s only on a TF OC playlist and not one for a canon character, but I’m throwing it on anyway because Radical Face has some beautiful storytelling with their music and this is my favourite song of theirs. Also, some lines do remind me a little bit of Rodimus (which is fitting, given that this OC is also from Nyon). in particular: ‘So I collected all our plans and crimes/and set them all alight/ The only thing that held me to this place/ You took with you when you died/ So goodbye, goodbye’.
First Defeat by Noah Gunderson (yt | spotify)
This is partially added because Noah Gunderson is sorely underrated and I love this song, and partially because it makes me think of MiniMegs/MagsMegs in IDW. It’s a very sweet, very sad song that I think very much encapsulates the bittersweet nature of the ship for me - the fact that it’s kinda doomed from the start, but that they both care and pay attention to little things and this isn’t a fight they can win but they sure did fight it anyway - I’m gonna stop myself, before I ramble. I really like this song.
Kiss Me by Rob Vischer (yt | spotify)
Aight this one isn’t transformers, BUT I’m adding it anyway, because I’ve been listening to it daily for weeks now. It’s tied into an RP I’m doing for TLOU, and I feel the second verse in my bones every time I listen.
I am henceforth tagging @lovewithagirl @nevershootamockingbird @babblythings @eldritchcorvidae @eldritchjackalope @thetragicallynerdy @rubixpsyche @shakenbaeky @belasupremacy and @orionhong to also inflict your music taste on the world and share some recs if you wanna!!

I had a little thought in my head and I need to ask someone open minded like you. Do you think JK is recording TikToks with Mingyu & Eunwoo and doing dance challenges with Hybe groups as a form of strategic marketing? Collabs between groups with dance challenges are a massive part of Chapter 2. We've seen Jimin, Suga and Jhope do this in the early months of 2023. Later both V and JK followed the trend.
I know that a lot of these kpoppers are actual friends. Taemin and Jimin go way back. So do JK Eunwoo and Mingyu. JK asked the Carats to support him. That moment stood out to me and has been tickling my brain for awhile. Why go there? He has Army.
Soooooo is JK trying to broaden his individual brand? I thought he was just having fun and being a typical Gen Z. But maybe he combined something he loves with business. I still can't figure out why Jimin has been collabing with everyone but JK like not a single live or TikTok with JK?? Atp it's gotten weird. But that is off topic. Sorry. Do you think JK is being strategic or am I reading too much into some simple little Tiktoks. Thank you in advance if you choose to answer my Ask.
I have been thinking the same thing for a while now, I think you have some right. JK loves dancing, random funny videos, editing and filming, and also sharing little things with ARMY. It makes total sense that he would love TikTok as a platform. In fact, had he not been an idol, I could totally see him being a TikToker. It suits him more than Instagram, for example.
I believe the reason he posts so much is that there is a combination between his own interest and fixation on TikTok and a brand strategy. Everyone knows that when JK finds smth he enjoys, he obsesses over it until he moves to the next thing, but also every music artist in the world now knows the power of TikTok. Labels are literally making singers film videos for the platform, and they pressure them into it, even if the singers don't want to or don't have the affinity for it, and TikTok is a big art of every marketing strategy nowadays. I am far from the thought that JK is being made to do TikTok, but he could have been advised to take the opportunity of his profile being revealed to grow it and promote his music. Every sensible manager would tell him that this is a golden opportunity to grow his brand and keep people interested, as well as boost his releases. Even if nobody told him, JK has been in this industry for 10+ years, and he knows very well how to play the game. After all, even in the middle of his hellish schedule, he has still found the time to actively post. That is hardly a coincidence.
It isn't that JK is ingenuine, far from it. He enjoys TikTok, he is good at it, and TikTok is pretty valuable nowadays, so why not embrace it?
It's interesting to see how much he will continue posting when his debut is officially over and done with, even though I hardly think he will stop being active. In contrast to other members, I think JK won't be going to the shadows once this album is released and the promotions are over. I can see him continuing to go to events, award shows, festivals, etc, as part of his "worldwide stardom" and "main pop boy" agenda.

sbhjibji0bsij going from serious to lighthearted but this lives absolutely rent free in my head what is wrong with him (this and 'i'm a total jacket slut' 😭 king what are you talking about)
mikey's whole arts and crafts rant. HE IS BABY BOY!!!!!!

To the people bringing back tired claims that bts made their success off being “carbon copies” of their 2nd gen contemporaries (because we all know bts’ debut music was what blew them up, right??), or my favorite, that we “can acknowledge their originality up to a certain point, but armys need to admit bts get inspiration from other artists”:
Congratulations, you are correct! Because guess what, nothing exists in a vacuum and you clearly have no idea what the process of art-making entails.
I don’t know whose reality I’m about to shatter when I say this but...artists study other artists *mind-blown* Except this isn’t news because you hear idols say all the time how they’re inspired by or look up to other peers in the industry all. of. the. time. But it’s cute when 4th gen idols say it and a crime when bts does it?
There’s a reason why art students are made to take art history classes. Yes, to study the greats, but also to know how artworks/artists exist & are informed by their situational context, i.e. time period, geography, politics, societal norms, etc. And why as you develop your body of work, professors will constantly point to references of other artists who work with similar themes, materials, and so forth because it can only help guide your artistic practice; it all becomes wisdom. But moreso, everything exists in conversation with each other. You can literally point to any song from any group and understand where they pulled their sound from in the larger tradition of musical instrumentation and composition.
I’m also convinced that the people saying bts are “copies” of bap, blockb, and bigbang have not familiarized themselves with the discographies of any of these artists at all (I really need people to listen to full albums and not just title tracks). Just because they’ve overlapped in genres, does not mean they sound the same. Blockb’s hiphop sound is very stylized and contrasts that which bts utilized. While both bts and blockb’s early music was very old school hiphop, hiphop is not a monolith; and the genre itself varies drastically depending on regionality like east coast/west coast (back then at least). And while we’re here, you’ve noticed that these other groups bts “copied” also got their inspiration from 90s American rap and hiphop, right? Same goes for r&b, trap, jazz and all these genres that have their roots in Western Black culture. Kpop borrows from everything. Also in an industry that heavily follows trends, you are going to find similarities among artists from time to time, that’s just how it goes.
Also, funny how y’all never bring up the way the entire kpop industry is trying to follow the bts model. It isn’t a coincidence that a bunch of fourth generation groups now have their own story line universes that are embedded into their mv’s, or how everyone is producing their own long-form, online variety content because they know that sustained audience engagement over time was part of the bts recipe for success (Top Social Artists, anyone?). Hey, remember that one time exo blatantly plagiarized a bts song? No? I figured. No outcry for them I guess. Plenty of kpop artists sample songs from other musicians--you see this a lot with girl groups, make covers of other singers, but they’re not profiting off someone else’s music are they? Yeah, same goes for bts.
Like I’m so sorry to break it to you, but saying that an artist takes inspiration from what is circulating in the cultural zeitgeist or from other musicians isn’t the burn you think it is. It’s literally just how you make art and study your craft.

Sorry if this is weird. I've followed you since the SAK days and I've always loved your end of year posts. No pressure at all but I was wondering if you'd do a 2023 one? Like what are your favourite songs, albums, TV shows, books, games etc. of the year. Lots of love ❤️
Anon, thank you soooo much for asking this. As you probably know since you've followed me for so long, I love New Years, and I love keeping track of the media I consume, and I love talking about it!!!! This is so long. You're in for a trip.
Below the cut are my recs for music, podcasts, books, fic (all hockey), TV shows, and games.
MUSIC
Maren Morris (particularly the GIRL album) A lot of my dedicated listening time was actually during the summer, when I was working feverishly on a Nico/TK fic that currently has a draft with like 30k words but I got stuck and have taken a break from it lmao. If you care to understand more about the fic, I keep a tag. Anyway, I was looking for something upbeat/slightly country (I don't really enjoy country) for the vibes, and really liked her stuff. Some of my faves include: Nervous, The Feels, Make Out With Me, Shade. Tate McRae My girlfriend is a loooongtime fan of her, and I love a good pop album. Overall I really enjoy Think Later, with my faves being Greedy, Think Later, and Plastic Palm Trees. Mt Joy They are actually my fave band since Catfish ghosted me! I am truly, to the core, a Rearrange Us girlie (that album is pure art), but Orange Blood comes close and takes me back to summertime every time I listen. Faves from it include Orange Blood, Roly Poly, Johnson Song, Lemon Tree, Don't It Feel Good, and Bathroom Light (one of my top songs of all time).
PODCASTS
You Can't Do That A hockey podcast (they are Caps fans but cover all of the NHL) that's so fucking hilarious and entertaining. I listen to it religiously. Keeper Chat This one I found randomly through Spotify recommendations!! Flora & Fauna are two ex-zookeepers and each episode discuss an animal. I love learning little trivia bits about animals, but honestly their digressions are the best part. They are fucking hilarious and do not take their job of imparting knowledge on their listeners seriously. And it's incredible. The Tiny Meat Gang Podcast I have kind of always been a Cody & Noel fan, but only started listening to their podcast this year as background noise at work. They are very funny and I like that they're not overly loud/screaming because that's obnoxious when I'm trying to work. Also I agree with a lot of their pop culture takes, so it's fun to see what they'll discuss. Sold a Story More of a docuseries type podcast, it has 10ish parts and is investigative journalism into how schools started adopting a curriculum that is scientifically proven NOT to be the correct way to teach kids to read?!?! I was mind blown?? I was HOOKED and wish everyone in the world would listen.
BOOKS
Stolen Focus by Johann Hari I read this book and then immediately quit every social media (just about). It made me realize my attention was precious (especially with ADHD) and made me want to be more intentional with it. The State of Affairs by Esther Perel My girlfriend informed me that people on tiktok really enjoy arguing about Esther Perel and this book that they've interpreted as her manifesto that monogamy isn't achievable. Which is not really what's going on in the book, lmao. It's a fantastic deep dive into infidelity (which impacts sooo many people!!) and how our societal ideas of a "fairytale" type partner that is our one and only everything is so limiting and sets us up for failure. Spare by Prince Harry I listened to this on audiobook and just enjoyed the experience of hearing what a royal life is like, lmao. It was so fascinating and I have a lot of respect for him and Meghan. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket I've been working my way through the box set I bought last year, but lately I've been in a reading slump and according to the internet you should reread some of your favorites. I always loved that this series didn't handle hard things with kid gloves when I was younger. It's like the author treats children with enough dignity to trust they can handle the harsh realities of the world.
FICS (all hockey, if you're not interested skip to the next section haha)
I have a horrible habit of using ao3 on my phone, downloading fics and sending them to my kindle, and then it's hard for me to remember what I've read/get back to them once I'm off my kindle. I keep all of my recs in my bookmarks on my ao3 (which I'm trying to update currently!), but I'll throw in some faves: from this day forward series by greenteam (Jack Hughes/Nico Hischier/Jonas Siegenthaler) A modern royalty au where Jack and Nico essentially have an arranged marriage. Both parts are A+++, but anyone who knows me knows I looove some polyamory and exploration into the dynamics of it, and the second part hits that nail on the head. Featuring trying a dynamic out and getting it wrong (!!!!!) and needing to make adjustments. Chef's kiss. California, dude. So sick. by dilangley (Trevor Zegras/Jamie Drysdale) I downloaded this with the intention to binge it all in one night, and then got so lost in the universe I took much longer with it. Fun summery vibes, full of the mundane realism I love and have been ranting about recently (this is the fic where Trevor picks at Jamie's peeling sunburn, ugh!!!!!) amateur hour at herbie's travel center. june. by Matriaya (Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick) This is a little 5k thing about making amateur porn spur of the moment, but really I have loooved digging into Matriaya's work, which includes a lot of realism in smut, which is my absolute faaaavorite!!!!! Grabbing the link for this post I also see they've published a lot of work recently that I need to download asap. heaven won't be the same by lilcrickee (Nico Hischier/Jack Hughes) I was trying to keep this list down to three, and with different pairings, but UGH I can't help but mention this one. A Bridgerton au that was SO FUN to read and the tenderness made me sob. I've already read every Travis Konecny/Lawson Crouse fic lilcrickee has graciously provided this earth, and I love their work immensely.
TV SHOWS
Queen Charlotte I've loved everything in the Bridgerton universe so far, and this spin-off might be my favorite season so far! Jury Duty Sooo funny. Although it's kind of trippy that Ronald was living in a scripted world. Lost I'm not gonna talk about it anymore, I'll go insane. I was just rewatching season 2 last night.
GAMES
Cozy Grove I've mentioned Cozy Grove a few times on here, but I love it sooo much. Def one of my favorite games I played this year!! I love that the game doesn't care if you skip a day (I've skipped a few weeks right now lmao, and I can't wait to jump back in!). Like Animal Crossing but with a more solid plot. Planet Zoo I'm a Zoo Tycoon kid, so I had to try this out! It's very hard to learn, you definitely have to start with campaign mode. I've always been a "sandbox" type person, but I actually loved the challenges in campaign mode that I stuck with it even after I had enough of a grasp on it to start my own zoo from scratch. It's extremely engrossing, you'll log on and waste three hours accomplishing objectives and fussing with animals that are very picky. Dorfromantik Easy to pick up and learn and SO ADDICTING. I love playing it and listening to an audiobook or podcast. Plus it's sooo beautiful. I wish it was available as a mobile game, but hopefully someday! No plot, it's a puzzle/casual type game. Mini Motorways I have Apple Arcade for Cozy Grove and somehow ended up downloading this. It is ADDICTING and makes me incredibly ANGRY!!! The game gives you limited pieces of pavement and plops buildings down wherever, and it's your job to manage traffic. I truly believe the AI is against me because I'll be doing SO GOOD and they'll put a new building SO FAR AWAY in the WORST SPOT. UGH.

Hiya Lane! Another day - another message from Santa! 🎅🏻
Today is a bit of a sad day for Hanoi Rocks fans, but I love watching All Those Wasted Years (Live at Marquee) concert, it lifts my spirits. Maybe you also have a favorite Hanoi Rocks performance? Today I started with a sad damn thing. It turns out to be some kind of depressive Santa lmao
Omg!! The glam festival is wonderful! Which groups are already known?
It sounds pretty funny about national holidays! The King and two birthdays hehe
Oh, I'm sorry that your work week was quite busy :( If it's not a secret, who do you work for? I work in a vinyl store and sometimes it can be too boring lol
Wow!! What's your cat's name?
And I'm sorry for your loss ❤️‍🩹
Wow, this is an amazing top album! Ultraphobic, in my opinion, is very underrated. Your playlist is very cool and diverse! I like it!
🎄 Do you have a favorite hobby?
🎄 Where would you like to travel and why?
🎄 Your favorite time of the year and association with it?
Your Santa ⛄️ 🎄
hey santa!
i was a little confused on the hanoi rocks thing until i remembered time zones & it's probably still the 8th wherever you are! i haven't watched any live performances of theirs, i can't seem to do that for any groups i like for some reason? theres one single faster pussycat live cover i listened to from last years glamfest in my country that i listened to, but only because it was an inxs song that i really connect with
i do have some favourite hanoi songs though: don't follow me, a million miles away, cutting corners, & underwater world to name a few
the few artists they have already announced for glamfest are jetboy, janet gardner, the cruel intentions (all international), and ablaze, sisters doll (local acts). i'm hoping for michael monroe as he is in japan the week before which would make travel easy and would line up with the hints we've been given! i'm also hoping for firehouse and also a newer aussie band called southern river band who i actually saw earlier this year, they're awesome!
i can't say the company i work for just for online safety reasons but i work as a piercer! i'm still training so i am an apprentice but it's super fun!! it's so cool you work in a record store tho i feel like that's something i could see myself doing in an alternate reality
my cat's name is bandit!
thank you! i do pride myself on my spotify & my music taste and i have probably over 200 playlists at this point just from getting random ideas for silly little playlists that i think huh that would be fun (and then i end up having three songs and abandon)
ultraphobic is soooo underrated and i am SO upset that it (+belly to belly) isn't available at all to stream in my country! i'm even blocked from listening on youtube! i had to buy copies on cd (from overseas mind you, they only sell the first three albums and then the best of compilation here) and download the files from there and add them as local files so i could listen with the rest of my stuff.
okok question time i love this part
i have a few hobbies; i've recently been doing a few art classes and discovered i'm kinda ok at drawing so that's fun! i also do a bit of photoshop and make stupid t shirts n stuff (those were my christmas gifts to everyone last year)
i'd like to travel more within my own country as i've only been to one other state, and one territory, i'd also like to visit some of my online friends in the us & canada! and also just europe in general for touristy stuff
i used to say i hate summer and to a degree i kiiinda still do? like i don't like australian summer weather and the heat BUT i kinda have to let up on that and realise that i end up being the happiest at this time of the year and somehow all my stress happens around the middle of the year (and my birthday and christmas both happen in summer so....)
nice to hear from you!!!

orchid, mahonia, chia, edelweiss, papyrus? :0
HI BESTIEEEE sorry this took all day i was at work and then tumblr didn’t save any of my very long reply that i’d already made
orchid -> what's a song you consider to be perfect?
oh fuck this is tough there’s a ton. i would say right now this live version of miami 2017 by billy joel, the original studio version is pretty perfect but the power behind these live vocals is just unmatched
i would also give bonus points to 4 Leaf Clover by Ravyn Lanae, Kalopsia by Queens of the Stone Age, My Sister by Angel Olsen, and My Baby’s Taking Me Home by Sparks. bonus mention to Face to Face by Daft Punk which i don’t think is a perfect song but is one of the coolest pieces of music i’ve ever heard. there’s some great videos breaking down the samples that song uses, a couple of which haven’t even been found yet
mahonia -> what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does?
honestly i don’t know. seeing live music helps me wanna make music but honestly i feel the most motivated to make things when they come out of just raw high emotion. like right now i’m dealing with a traumatic situation and i’m not doing super well but i also really wanna get all that shit just like out so im more motivated than ever to make something out of it. it’s a bit bleak but true, a lot of the stuff i’ve been proudest of has come out of the urge to vent outweighing the fear of not making “good” art. not to say i shouldn’t get help or i’ll lose my ability to make things i’m proud of, but i’m the most inspired when i have overwhelming emotions i feel the need to turn into something productive
chia -> what's an inside joke you have with someone else?
DRACULA CHRISTMAS DRACULA CHRISTMAS DRACULA CHRISTMAS
edelweiss -> how'd you think of your url/ username? what's it associated with to you?
someone asked me about this in a reply this morning lol, it was a dumb joke at work. we were talking about different livestock milks outside of goats and cows and thought the phrase “hog milk” was so fucking funny but that was taken so it became hogmilked which is infinitely more harrowing
papyrus -> if you put your 'on repeat' playlist on shuffle, what's the first song that comes up? what do you like about it / associate it with?
i can’t find an on repeat playlist on tidal which is what i use, but i have been coping with the aforementioned traumatic experience with two specific albums so i’ll recommend a song off that
i talk a ton about suede these days but their debut album (along with …Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age) has been my comfort albums the last couple days and a good portion of what i’ve been listening to. i love the whole album but this is my favorite song off it by far. i’ve said it many times before but everyone, especially those who like 90s alt and britpop, should listen to suede’s self titled debut. perfect album imo

The 5th Annual Derrick Sanskrit "Everyone's a Critic" Awards (part one: music and movies)
Tumblr media
(note: I have posted this thread on Twitter at the end of December for the past five years, but with that platform's future more dubious than ever, it makes sense to back up 2022's edition here)
It's the most wonderful time of the year! Time for the fifth annual Derrick Sanskrit "Everyone's a Critic" Awards for all the pop culture I thought was simply the best over the past twelve months.
There's so much, we're gonna slow-drip this year, so let's start with music...
Tumblr media
Bloc Party guitarist Russell Lissack’s solo EP is seventeen minutes of just fantastic collaborations, including a reunion with Pin Me Down bandmate Milena Mepris. Had this been a full LP, it would be way higher in the rankings.
Tumblr media
A top-to-bottom reworking of 2020’s New Symbols, this LP benefits from both two more years of Tom Vek’s reflection on his art as well as wider distribution on digital music platforms so people could actually hear it.
Tumblr media
Nine years after his debut LP, the French DJ proves his mastery of timeless synth anthems with this album that feels like the soundtrack to a long lost John Hughes movie about sexy computer hackers.
Tumblr media
It feels like cheating to include the soundtrack to a 2021 concert film in this list, but the album dropped in 2022 and it freaking rules so whatever. This is the sound of the Dan Greene Cinematic Universe.
Tumblr media
A mostly-instrumental album of lush chiptune soundscapes, this high-def volume of Australian electronic anthems begs the question “why aren’t we having another chip resurgence right freakin’ now?” Danceable, worldly, melancholic, and beyond.
Tumblr media
A timely reminder that indie rock can be snarky and clever without losing the charm of four-part harmonies and driving hooks. Like cherry red Doc Martens stomping through a field of sunflowers, The Beths show us how to suffer with a smirk.
Tumblr media
No album this year felt as immediately BIG as the sophomore effort from this English post-rock phalanx. It commands attention before curling up in a ball to hide at your feet and whisper deep dark secrets in your ear.
Tumblr media
Continuing her transformation from cloud rap to pop, Kilo Kish challenges conventions with this collection of toe-tapping bangers about societal woes, public image, self-worth, and the ills of consumerism, all framed within a retro arcade game.
Tumblr media
A punk album so specifically of its time without immediately dating itself by naming names. A concept album about running a punk band like a business that comes to its logical conclusion: in-fighting, ego clashes, bankruptcy, and thanking the sponsors.
Tumblr media
Simply the best breakup album in ages (sorry Swifties). Cutthroat and callous, honest and earnest, this math rock sophomore LP challenges pop song structure as much as relationships challenge the edges of individual identity.
Wasn't that so much fun? So many fantastic albums in 2022, such wonderful songs to sing and dance to. Good times.
And now, our second category... it's time to talk about MOVIES...
Tumblr media
The vainglorious adventures of an aspiring podcaster focusing largely on the culture clash between New York and Texas. Quite possibly the best performance ever from Ashton Kutcher.
Tumblr media
While this mock-rock-doc never reaches the parodic highs of Weird Al’s previous “UHF,” the extended Funny Or Die sketch carries heaps of charm with an all-star cast of comedy cameos.
Tumblr media
Easily the most unexpected film of the year, this holiday horror fusion brings all the delirious twists and turns you’d expect from the creator of “Too Many Cooks.”
Tumblr media
Simply the biggest, boldest, wildest action movie to date, RRR offers more spectacle per minute than Zack Snyder does in an hour, while still finding plenty of time to sing and dance.
Tumblr media
Jordan Peele’s third horror film forgoes shocks and scares in favor of slow burn dread with thoroughly enjoyable examinations of race, media, exploitation, and religion.
Tumblr media
This celebration of the power of art to question authority and buck societal norms poses the question “what if Freddy Mercury and Jimi Hendrix were best friends in feudal Japan?”
Tumblr media
Simply the most fun I had in a movie theater all year. A fast, stylish, star-studded action farce, like Guy Ritchie directing a script by the Coen Brothers, this film taught me more about Thomas the Tank Engine than my nephews ever will.
Tumblr media
Proving Knives Out wasn’t a one-off fluke, Rian Johnson delivers a whodunnit with bigger stakes, bigger stars, bigger spectacle, and bigger laughs. A covid-era mystery for Agatha Christie fans of any age.
Tumblr media
In their second feature, the Daniels have produced what feels like a once-in-a-generation iconic piece of cinema. Sweeping & grandiose, intimate & delicate, EEAAO is the sci-fi family immigrant tale we never knew we so desperately needed.
Tumblr media
The most I’ve cried in the theater since Toy Story 3. Marcel’s journey will melt the most frozen of hearts and make you believe that anything is possible with a positive outlook.

Howdy, Kringle here!
I really kind of thought I’d replied to this, isn’t that funny? But then I thought about it more and realized, wait. No. Sorry! Sometimes if I read things and don’t reply right away, I’ll have composed something in my head and the memory of thinking about what I would say becomes a memory of having said it.
Oh it’s cool you checked out Belle and Sebastian! They were just sort of around in the indie air when I was super into music as a teen/young adult, you know, back in the day. My favorite records are If You’re Feeling Sinister, Fold Your Hands Child, and Dear Catastrophe Waitress. I feel the band is a bit TOO democratic sometimes, in that I like the songs not written by Stuart less, so it makes them uneven sometimes! I do think lots of people consider them too “twee,” but I enjoy it. Hmm. Picking single songs is so hard! I was into them back when you listened to a whole CD, you know? But hmm. I cry at “Piazza New York Catcher.” “Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying” is a good one. “Seeing Other People.” “Stay Loose” Is a bit of a turn for them but it’s so good. OH! “Fought in a War.” Yeah. Ok I will stop now–dammit now I’m gonna listen to all of it again ha.
Honestly, re: Paul and WIngs, I don’t think people actually know which is which. I mean yeah, I think “Wild Life” and “Red Rose Speedway” aren’t great, but everything after that through Back to the Egg, I enjoy!
A cozy family Christmas is just fine! I’m heading out tomorrow very early to visit the family (I live quite far from the rest of ‘em) and there’s going to be a little juggling since both my brothers have families now and haven’t quite adjusted to the reality of, you know, not necessarily being able to do all the same things anymore! But it’ll be nice to see everyone.
We do watch a lot of films–It’s a Wonderful Life is a fave, of course (again, people think it’s cheery? But it’s dark AF). I tend to prefer the older holiday songs, the Bing Crosby type stuff, or carols. Christmas is largely about nostalgia for me, I guess! Do you have any Christmas favorites? Movies, songs, foods?
hello, Kringle! i hope you’re doing well and that you’re having a lovely week so far!
haha, no worries! i forget to respond to people constantly, so you don’t need to fret about that. ‘tis quite alright, dear chum!
falling even deeper down the belle and sebastian pipeline, i can definitely see why ‘dear catastrophe waitress’ is one of your favorites by them! songs like ‘stay loose’ and ‘roy walker’ are more upbeat in comparison to ‘fold your hands’, and a bit reminiscent of ‘ram’ in some parts. ‘seeing other people’ sounds like a song you’d hear in a coming-of-age film during a scene in which the protagonist undergoes an extensive amount of introspection after a raucous event occurs in the story. ‘get me away from here, i’m dying’ is a well paced, earthy song and i like it! it’s actually wild to think that DCW was released when i was practically a baby! also, if people consider them to be a bit too “twee”, that’s their prerogative. but music should incorporate sweetness and sentimentality, not everything has to be serious!
i must say, i actually like red rose speedway (i mainly like the art that’s included inside the album lol). but it’s one of those albums where i’d really have to be in the mood to listen to in its entirety, y’know? as for wild life, it’s okay. it’s one of his more, and i hate to say this, “forgettable” projects, but it’s not terrible. it’s a record that you can put on as background music during a long car ride through the rural countryside.
it’s funny that you mention ‘it’s a wonderful life’ because there’s an episode of the fairly odd parents that parodies this exact film. which is totally bizarre that a children’s show would reference that because isn’t the movie about a depressed guy who gets rescued by his guardian angel and is basically told, “i’m gonna show you real quick what the world would’ve looked like if you never existed. oh, merry christmas, by the way!”?
i hope you have a lot of fun when you visit your family this year! and yes, children can be quite a handful, haha. surely, your brothers will get the hang of it eventually. although, parenting may be a blessing, i’m assuming it can get rather strenuous at times, as well. my older brother already has two children of his own and he’s still in his mid 20’s! he’s a great father, and i can only hope he and the girls can relax on christmas!
during this time of year, i love watching those stop-motion animated, christmas themed rankin bass films. ones like ‘santa claus is coming to town’, ‘the year without a santa claus’, ‘jack frost’, and of course, ‘rudolph…’ my family and i used to watch those together on abc family all the time when i was younger. as for songs, i’m not particularly into christmas music, but i will say i don’t mind hearing ‘wonderful christmastime’ every now and then (i was on the verge of blacklisting that song from my brain last year at my old job because it would constantly play over the speaker lmaoo) ‘happy christmas (war is over)’ by john is a good tune as well.
speaking of john, we’ve engaged in a lot of paul-related banter so far. so i’d like to ask you ; what is your opinion of his music? how would you evaluate his character as a musician (and if you’d like, as a person as well)?

Rating the Christmas songs on Tidal's Christmas Classics playlist
I only have some shame saying that I like most Christmas music, even when I was working in retail, so understand this is not written by someone going "ooooh grr Christmas music sucks." But I noticed Tidal's Christmas playlist is packing a few deep cuts, and I thought We'd have a little fun and give em some ratings (going until failure--there are a lot of these)
Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You: 7/10 Is it safe to say this song is about as ubiquitous as any Christmas song ever written? It has the benefit of the singer not being dead, which must go some way towards its popularity. Any potential overplay disregarded, there are things about this song that work. I like the bells at the top, the backup vocals are funny, Mariah's got some pipes. I'm never itching to throw it on, but it's rare I skip it.
Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree: 5/10 I respect the retro vibes, I do, but this song has never done much for me. It's best moment is referencing a better Christmas song. Rockin' is a load-bearing word here, and I think it has some people thinking this song is more fun than it is. Saxophone is fun.
The Temptations - Silent Night: 6/10 Most of the points are coming from just how much this song is doing. Not a standard cover of Silent Night at all. Very chill atmosphere, everyone sounds dead on. Don't think I need it to be the six minutes that it is.
Bobby Helms - Jingle Bell Rock: 4/10 This is another song people trying giving a pass for having some snazz to it, but folks, I do not understand it. It's so boring. That's All I got
Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song: 9/10 I'm compelled to give every Nat Christmas song a 10, and it only loses a point for being The Christmas Song. Not a big favorite of mine. I do appreciate how loose it is, but lyrically it really does feel like going through the motions. Nat is always packing a punch, tho, so it ranks.
Wham! - Last Christmas: 4/10 I'm sorry, Wham!. No one would love to have a Whammer rank than I, but the hook is so boring. The synths are very clean, honestly the instrumental does the heavy lifting, this one.
Bing Crosby - The Little Drummer Boy: 3/10 Again. Bing, this hurts me more than it hurts you. Not your fault. It's The Little Drummer Boy. There are no depths to which this song blows ass. He's such a great voice that he probably has the best version possible, but still. 3.
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York: 9/10 Pleasant surprise. Never heard of this song before now, or The Pogues. This vocalist is so boozy sounding, it's great. Piano is very whatever sounding and then the FUCKING accordion busts in the tempo jumps, Kristy MacColl joins the battle, and shit ramps up so fast. Halfway through the song I was ready for a 5 and my tune thoroughly changed. Have to respect it.
Donny Hathaway - This Christmas: 8/10 Didn't know this song was this old. I'm a fan, and this incarnation ranks with the best ones. Drums are so good, Donny sells it. If you like fucking on Christmas, I'm just saying you have options.
Boys II Men - Let It Snow: 6/10 Points for originality, but I've never really been a Boyz II Men boy/man. This is another one that feels a lot longer than it is. Christmas R&B has a hell of a time coming up with things to sing about other than Christmas activities with your special friend. "god must have sent you down from heeeeeeaaaaaaaven" is a good moment.
Frank Sinatra - Let It Snow: 7/10 I will always rank Bing over Frank, I'm afraid, but I'll give it up for him. He does as good as you can do with this job, the backing vocals halfway through make for a fun, unique moment. Most Christmas covers fall on their face when they try to add anything new, which I cannot say for this one. Part where Frank says "that fire is mmmmm delightful" gives me the heebie jeebies.
Elton John - Step Into Christmas: 7/10 MMMMMM. It pains me to only go as high as 7. I want to go higher. Come on. It's Elton. The hook is so fucking crisp. His pants on the album art. The la la la la la's. The RIFF mmmm. But I can't escape the feeling that there's one too many things going on in the composition. Especially if you're listening with headphones, and I suppose fuck me for doing that bc who listens to these songs alone. It's close to an 8, I'll say that.
Darlene Love - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home): 9/10 Powerful statement from a Christmas song with one of the less inspired hooks. But the instrumentation is everything to this song. And Darlene's got a serious voice. Oscar goes to the drums. This is an ideal song for hollering and Darlene was right to go for it.
The Jackson 5 - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town: 4/10 Here's where I delegitimize this entire list, bc I can't say I love any of the Jackson 5 Christmas efforts. Like, I already don't care for this specific song at the best of times and no I don't think the "sAAAAnta Claus" so many artists go for saves it. Sorry, Tito, Jackson 5 member I've selected at random.
Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby: 10/10 Yeah, you heard me. I do not understand thinking the hate in the slightest, apart from the awful Bublé cover. Eartha has one of the best voices of this era and she never gets the credit I think she deserves. Best Christmas song where a woman asks a very rich stupid man to buy her a platinum mine. "Come and trim my Christmas tree/with some decorations bought at Tiffany's." So good.
John Lennon/Yoko Ono - Happy Xmas (War Is Over): 5/10 idk, man. I didn't expect these two to do something generally appealing, in a way I applaud them for writing a Christmas ballad with a lil bit of sass to it. "Yes, Happy Christmas... to some people hmmhhmhmhmhmhmm." Why the Silent Hill strings.
Destiny's Child - 8 Days of Christmas: 8/10 "You know Christmas?" Great first line. Special place in my heart for all Christmas songs that are about and only about getting swagged out. Also for Christmas songs that feel incidentally about the holiday. Fun one.
Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas?: 0/10 Awful. Shit's for the birds. Deplorable pond scum. Might be my least favorite Christmas song ever. Breaks into being one of the worst Christmas songs ever, so fucking cloying and boneless. This song pats you on the head like you're a child. Get it out of here.
Bing Crosby - White Christmas: 10/10 Bing! Biiiiiiiiiiiing! It's Biiiiiiiiiiing! He's from Spokane! I'm from Spokane! Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing! Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Vince Guaraldi - Linus and Lucy: 10/10 All time rager for the ages, though I may somewhat object to it being a Christmas song. I welcome it, don't get me wrong, look at the score, it's just odd. There are most Christmas-leaning Peanuts songs on this very album. Alas. Great tune.
Justin Bieber - Mistletoe: 5/10 Oh, what? I'm supposed to give Biebs a zero on principle or something? I'll have you know he's got some earworms. Except I'm not so convinced this is one of them. idk, I feel like as far as subject matter goes, mistletoe as a tradition is low-hanging. Too easy. Try harder. Regardless, "the wise men follow the star/the way I follow my heart" is uh--its good. It's a good line.
Michael Bublé - I'll Be Home For Christmas: 6/10 inoffensive. That's what I got. Buble can lay it down when he wants, but almost all of his Christmas diddies are just going through the motions. Rarely does he make it his own, and when he does we wish he didn't (google Santa Buddy). Eh.
The Ronettes - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus: 5/10 Tempo is fun, and Ronettes are always a treat. This is another case of a song just being really hard to make fun. Not a favorite of mine, but I don't totally hate it.
Elvis Presley - Blue Christmas: 9/10 Apologies in advance, I really fuck with this one. Never a skip for me. If you already don't like him, this one song will not change your mind. My grandpa could do a mean rendition of this one; honestly might be what I'm thinking about with this rating.
John Williams - Home Alone Theme: 7/10 Good on Tidal for tossing this one in. Good Christmas playlist has a variety of pulls. Can't say I love it, John always did have a "sound" for any film involving children and it's not my favorite type of work from him. Still, nice to see it here.
The Temptations - Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer: 3/10 Sorry, lame song removed from Rankin-Bass. Temptations are really going for it, but they don't melt my chilly heart.
Judy Garland - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas: 8/10 Before embarking on this, I actually didn't know Judy Garland had done any Christmas music, let alone a whole Christmas album. I'm into it. Anyone else ever think the title of this song sounds a bit facetious?
Gene Autry - Frosty The Snowman: 6/10 Can't get too mad at this one. Combination of the album art and how goofy this version is. Saying it's bad feels like telling a six year old they're acting cringe. Good for Gene, he knew what this song is supposed to sound like. If nothing else. And I think there's literally nothing else.
The Jackson 5 - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus: 2/10 Man, I was about to rate this one seriously, then the kiss sfx played two seconds in and i winced so hard my hand slipped and I hit the 2 key. Crazy. But seriously, I can't do this one. Michael's performance borders on his worst ever, but I'll give him credit for just how long he holds the note at the end. Also funny how the implication of the outro is a large group of people attempting to silence him. S/O to whichever one tells him to shut up, lmao.
The Supremes - My Favorite Things: 9/10 I'm not the arbiter of what is and is not a Christmas song, but this song's on thin ice. That said, I like this version a lot. Maybe more than the original. The oooooOOOOOoooo's are fun. The big band feel does a lot for this one.
RUN-DMC - Christmas In Hollis: 10/10 Heeeeeellllllll yeah. You gotta hand it to them. Not a request. Hand it to them right now. Rocks so hard. Turning them in a spotless peer review.
Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime: 3/10 Okay. I'm aware opinion on this song is split. For some, this is a Christmas diamond in the rough. Some people cannot stand it. I'll tell you what, the synths do create a mood of sorts, annoying as they get. That and I don't love the jingle bells that start and simply do not stop. Also feels like the songs runs out of things to do like a quarter of the way in. Can't say I hate it, but I'm far from liking it.
Wizzard - Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day: 2/10 This sounds like a Christmas song written as a tax write-off. Not an original bone in its body, I forgot this one as soon as it was over. Poor effort.
Chuck Berry - Run Rudolph Run: 6/10 Very eh on this one. This isn't a sound criticism, but it just sounds like everything else Chuck was doing at the time. This is another song I forget exists until the holiday season. Chuck's done better.
The Jackson 5 - Up On The House Top: 4/10 Just learning of this song right now. I mean, this version. They still aren't getting to me, sad to say. It's a little fun, but hmmmmm. Not stunning me.
Johnny Mathis - Sleigh Ride: 9/10 I'll be real. I rank Sleigh Ride. One of my preferred tenured Christmas songs. Johnny perfectly executes, too. Some versions are doing way too much, this one does just enough. These wonderful things are the things we remember all through our lives...
Alvin and the Chipmunks - The Christmas Song: 10/10 WOOOOOOOOOOOO. Love this one, I don't care who knows. Total earworm, I am a child again. You get basically all the Chipmunks lore in like twenty seconds total. Marvel of worldbuilding. I STILL WANT A HULA HOOOOOOOP (starting to feel the strain of writing all of these)
Will update this when I got the energy back
