I follow you for your Israel and Jewish posts, and honestly I've no idea about anything Mileapo but it always makes me happy to see you posting about them because it means you got a fun little break from the hard shit
Awwwww, thank you so much, lovely Nonnie!
First, for following me. Second, for being so kind, and caring about me getting a bit of fun as well.
I'll just say Mileapo seem to be (on top of handsome and talented) genuinely kind. It's in little things like the way fans caught on film Mile behind the scenes, thanking the security staff at one of their events. People usually talk about how kind stars are with their fans, but I liked that he was kind with some of the people who are usually invisible, the ones who are not fans, nor fellow actors, or in the entertainment business at all, staff Mile might never see again in any other event, people who he's not likely to benefit from in any way after that specific event is over, but he took the time to acknowledge and thank them. Just being reminded of kindness is always beautiful to me, and extra needed during these times. From what I've heard about Apo, he's got social anxiety and is more socially reserved than Mile around strangers, but is equally as kind with everyone.
Tumblr media
So yes, I do still follow them, even if I don't post about them daily like I used to. It means a lot that someone who doesn't know them, still cares about my well being enough to be happy over my Mileapo posts. It's like a circle of kindness, and that feels like a blessing, so again, thank you! And I hope you're also taking care of yourself, and making sure to find little comforts where you can find them! *hugs*
And just because, here's some Mileapo stuff anyway, just so we can have their pretty (and kind) faces included. ^u^ First, a reminder that this is how they look and smile at each other:
Tumblr media
Second, the other day Apo shared a video on IG from his bday party back in February. Mile commented this -
Tumblr media
And while it's def meant to come across as him teasing Apo, as if he's celebrating his 3rd bday anniversary, because he's such a joyful kid, I couldn't help notice that it's also 3 years since the first time they got to celebrate their bdays together. Coincidence? Maybe. Three is a typological number, so it's possible that when Mile wanted to throw out a random small age, it just happened to be 3. But this "anniversary" of them re-meeting and getting to do this together might have been somewhere in the back of his mind, too.
Speaking of things I have only guesses about, the other day Mile might have flown somewhere, possibly as part of a job for Guerlain. He posted to his IG story a pic from the airport, and added the bee emoji (bee is Guerlain's symbol, Mile's used this emoji before when posting about jobs he was doing for this company). Did he fly out, where to, or is this just a random throwback pic from a previous trip for Guerlain? IDK. But the very next day, Mile shared the song, "Ain't No Sunshine" (which goes, "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone"). We know that Mile and Apo have repeatedly used the moon symbol for Mile, and the sun for Apo, going all the way back to February 2021. So, it might be Mile missing Apo on main. Wouldn't be the first time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which reminded me of the last time when we know for sure Mile went away for a Guerlain event, in Malaysia. Mile wore a bee pin on his jacket, and performed "Nothing's Going to Change My Love for You." On the same day, Apo posted to his IG stories a black screen, with the exact same song playing as the soudtrack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, I think music is def a part of their love language, and that day proves it beyond any doubt (whether we think that this love is romantic or platonic).
Third. Recently Mileapo went on a trip to New Zealand to film a Taiwanese variety show (and possibly do a Dior photoshoot while there as well). On the flight there, Apo was taking a pic with a Hong Kong celeb he's friends with, and in it, he was seen wearing a silver ring. In the past, this ring was identified as very likely Mile's, when Apo wore it for his own bday celebration in Feb 2023.
Tumblr media
We also got this pic from the New Zealand trip. Beyond the fact that Mile's hand under Apo's jacket is doing things to me, that specific piece is the pink Dior jacket that fans suspect Mile bought for Apo ahead of the BOC Japan trip (where Apo was first seen wearing it), because Mile was caught on film talking to a sales lady right after Apo called him over to show him the jacket. So, did Apo fly to New Zealand with a ring and a jacket he got from Mile? IDK, but it's def a nice thought, and a reminder of how intertwined they are.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Apo liked this fan art of Mileapo in the above pic:
Tumblr media
And since I started this with how they look at each other, I'll end there as well. This is from the recent Vogue gala, mid interview. They're professionals, they know where the camera is, they know they're supposed to look there, and yet...
Tumblr media
Hope people enjoy this! Never stop spreading joy and kindness, wherever you can. xoxox

Name something you keep on the nightstand. The knickknack holder my sister gave me for Christmas.
What does a man brag about the most? Manhood, idk.
What's the most you've tipped your waiter or waitress. I remember tipping ₱500 once but I can't remember for what. My 19th birthday I think? when I spent it with friends at Cafe Lidia.
As a child, what frightened you the most? The sign-off TVCs they would play on the free-to-air channels once it was midnight. The songs were always cheery but also came off as creepy to me? Always felt like the end of the world or whatever lol. I refused to have the TV on in the late evening because I never wanted to catch those.
Name a dish you take to a potluck. My go-to is always sushi since they're a guaranteed hit.
What's a popular vacation location? Where I'm from, Hong Kong or Singapore.
Name a complaint people have about their job. A lack of work-life balance.
Name something you put off doing until the weekend. Usually, surveys haha.
What's a common remedy for a cold? I don't really have any. I just wait for it to go away.
How many scoops of ice cream do you put on an ice cream cone? I don't like ice cream in cone since I eat ice cream super slowly, but for that same reason I only prefer up to two scoops.
Name a type of nut. Walnuts.
How long is the typical vacation? A weekend to a week is more than enough. I remember feeling so strange when I went on back-to-back trips to Thailand and Malaysia last year and it lasted more or less 2 weeks because I had never taken that long of a vacation before. I felt so strange that I gave up one whole vacation day to work entirely remotely from Malaysia lol.
Name a popular athlete. Kylian Mbappé.
At what age should you have children? There isn't one right answer to this.
During high school, what was your worst subject? Chemistry :)
Name a famous Jack. Jack Black.
How many speeding tickets does an average motorist receive? I wouldn't have a clue. We don't even take speeding seriously here.
Name a profession a kid wants to be when they grow up. Firefighter.
Name a famous TV detective. Sherlock Holmes.
At what age did you get your first kiss? I was 16...I think? I can hardly remember.
What month is popular for weddings? Start of the year, like Jan and Feb since it's still cold.
Name something people forget when they're in a hurry. Idk, maybe an accessory? I always find myself forgetting my bucket hat :(

In Progress: Victor's Memoirs
I've been quiet the past few months. Here's a new update.
I'm still alive, and everything is as good as ever.
In fact, I kind of went a bit crazy once all the lockdowns finished. Did another tour of Asia and spent a little time in Latin America. More on that to follow, including pics and maybe some videos.
Basically, Victor is less confident that business is secure in Hong Kong. Sad thing, end of an era. But I was looking for new places to incorporate. Malaysia, Singapore on the Asia end and then Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua.
Nobody cares about that, lol.
But the important news: on my travels, (well, actually when I got back to England,) met a guy who writes erotica for a living. He told me I should write my life into erotic stories and sell it as books.
I was already writing up a memoir (a few months back, I think AsianCuckoldJourney wrote a story which inspired me.)
Now I'm doing that for fun. Will let you all know the progress.
Going over old conquests is fun. Writing it down. Feel like a serial killer going through his trophies.
And it makes me want to plan some more, to prove I've still got it now I'm in my thirties. lol

Dude, I can't. I can't do this anymore charot. I deserve a solo trip abroad and the opportunity to have fun and flirt with handsome guys. I won't have sex with them of course, eww. Maybe a kiss? Hehe joke, I will not give up my first kiss on that! Or would I? Haha I really don't see myself in a relationship like you know my tendency to disappear from people's lives and come back after months of traveling and playing around. That's my way of relaxing, I guess. Imagine if I enter a relationship and I can't do that anymore, like I have to tell my partner everything that I want to do and they get a say on that. Like, look at my parents, my mom wants to go abroad and my dad doesn't like traveling so they end up not going. Ehh, nevermind. I love my freedom. Plus the last time I flirted with a guy and not talk to him for several months because I was busy, he asked my friends why I wasn't responding to his calls and they guilt trip me into talking to him and when I finally answered his calls he cried and told me that his friend was right and girls from Manila are players. Excuse me? How was I a player I'm the most loyal person ever. Then, he blocked meeee! The audacity. What did I even do? Anyway, flirting was fun. You have someone you can go on trips with and someone who will buy you food but that's it. Relationships are boring and you will lose your freedom to decide once you're in it. Plus I already have plans of studying abroad, what if I get stupid and throw it all away just because of a relationship? Eww eww. I want to kiss tho. And I want to go on Disneyland dates with someone and kiss in the ferris wheel when it reaches the top at exactly 12 AM. And I want to travel with someone and ask them to buy me food. I also want to go on clubs and make out and get drunk and dance in the rain in the middle of the night. I want to experience all that scenario in T. Swift's song. Then I want to break up and write a song and cry in the bathroom and pretend like nothing happened when the morning comes. I want to do silly and fun things with a partner huhu but I don't want a relationship! And I don't want someone crying and accusing me of being a player and blocking me just because I failed to communicate. Like, give me a break. I want to enter and leave someone when I feel like doing so and they should pretend like nothing happened when I come back around. Is that too much to ask? They think I'm having fun when in reality I'm just probably watching Netflix or an anime series and I don't have the energy to respond to anyone. Or I'm probably in some resort or beach or if I have money...abroad haha. I like Singapore and Malaysia wasn't that bad. I want to go to Japan or Korea for my next trip. Europe is too expensive. I want to go to Taiwan and Hong Kong too. I want to go to Disneyland! I want to do so many things!

STILL NOWHERE TO GO
Me coming back after, when is the last post? about 4 years ago...?
PFFFT i guess this would be my safest place to tell everything, so when i am no longer in this world, yes i wish people around me will just scroll around this blog so they will always remember me,, if they do want...
so what’s going on after 4 years? my life is getting complicated.., let’s say 4 years ago i was struggling with my fresh graduate year, still have those dreams to pursue, but not now.. i will just live and do anything what i want to do not planning and telling my friends that if you still see me alive on my birthday it would be such a blessing, since i turned to 24 years old when i have a birth day i would just be cryin thanking myself, you passed, and then a new chapter of a new age is comin
2019
it was my first stage to enter “FUCK LIFE IS SUCKS I JUST WANT TO DIE” i guess i would be having a good job, good salaries, doing good in career but turned out i did not like my job desk, let’s say i was working in the wrong company. I hate the vibes, everything in there it was not suit to me at all, then i was unemployed for about 3 months, yes and i got a job ---- same place until now it has been 3 years and still counting... which i want to resign but don’t even do anything. My 2019 was good, the first time i work in this company i was so grateful, it suited my work style.. i have my own salaries which i think more than enough because i don’t pay for any bills , it was just all for myself. I was working hard motivated, you know “The College Wishlist” was just started, going to any concerts and travel! I could buy anything i want, i could eat anything without any worries, i went to my fav kpop concert, i went to hong kong with mom, having holiday with her just two of us, spent the the whole time so happy, and ready to travel again next year 2020!!!
2020
you know, let me introduce you with the main reason why you better die before 2020 came, COVID-19. yes, we start to have pandemic..... idk maybe still until now but somehow we’ve been recovery for the past months. I thought, just i thought i could finally happy and checklist all “The College Wishlist” but nah yes it’s still in the wishlist... i saved, i earned money that time, i can afford flights ticket - concert tickets just anything. Started to see Seventeen on Feb in Malaysia... i was so excited it would be my first solo overseas travelling, i bought flight ticket, hotels and anything but yes it got cancelled 2 weeks before D DAY, i was so frustated... not just like that, i had my second round holiday with my mom on march to seoul , south korea.. yes everything had been done flights, hotels and visa we should have just flown having holiday but nah.... covid cases were increasing a lot that time and no vaccination found. So, i decided to reschedule it, GA sucks they don’t refund our ticket so i have to pay 1/3 of the ticket price just to change the date to october.. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THE PANDEMIC DOIN BAD FOR MORE THAN 2 YEARS... yes and i still have the plans for MAY and JUN in that year. I have already bought flight tickets visa were done and concerts ticket for concert in Osaka, Japan.. i was so so i excited because if there were no corona i should have been travelling like each month lol, first to malaysia then korea then japan and on jun i have already bought return flights to seoul also lmao , you know i thought that earning money would be enough to feel those kind of experience but i think it was not the right time for me, i just don’t know why..
2020 was sucks, i am motivating myself everyday just want to travel and going to every concerts in any countries, and i can’t do that.. i lost my motivation a lot, my work partner left me and i have to work with “can-say-her-name-because-i-just-dont-like-her”
i did not receive my full salaries for like 3-4 months but rather than 2021 it was a lot better... i still can buy anything and do anything regardless HOW MUCH I HATE FOR NOT TRAVELLING.. i lost so much motivation at my work while i was focusing selling kpop things lol, i had bad review from work colleagues and i did not have my salaries increased.
 2021
ah what should i summarize this year? this is my lowest year, i just feel like i want to die at that year, thinking every possibility way to die without feeling hurts. i was cryin on my birthday while eating my own bday cake in the end of that year, i never thought i would be still alive on that day, i was so sure my life ended in 24 years old, but here i am... next month i would be turnin 26 and still can write everything in this tumblr, i guess i won’t be die .. i guess my life will be long because i know exactly god been really giving me so much struggles and wanted me to be the strongest person, showin me the world is nothing... you just like born to the world only for “transit” god be showin the world is not for me. it’s just every days in this year, i wish i could just die, because i was to tired...
2022
nah, it’s getting worse, still i feel being dead is a good choice rather than breathing, but somehow this year i can go travelling and go to concerts,  everyday its just frustating for me. Every days in this year like i want to die today but tomorrow i feel like grateful smh i guess i am mentally unstable, anyways will be back later, 2 weeks from now i would be flyin to seoul, ah so much anxiety coming but i will just pray, because i am so tired with anything, been dragging my expectation, i would just go with limited money because i guess why not, escaping for a short time, leaving the family behind that’s giving me a lot of depression,
see you will be back after my birthday,
i hope so

This may be an old article from 3 years ago, but these cultural aspects/observations still apply even today. And though this is strictly a Chinese perspective, a lot of these everyday life bits are observed in Overseas Chinese communities in countries such as The Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. as well as countries heavily influenced by Chinese culture like Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
I've always liked learning about other cultures and making comparisons between how things are done East vs West. Which probably stems from growing up with two cultures and Mom raising me on American movies xD
So the irony is if you asked me how many Chinese, Taiwanese, or Hong Kong actors I know, chances are I know as much as you do xD Like Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, and that's about it. But if you asked me about Western (specifically American and British) actors, then I have a useless brain dump of movie trivia and who was with who in what movie xD
Hmmm, both Taiwan and the Philippines are two distinct cultures but both look up to a certain country and are fascinated by that. In Taiwan's case, Japan and the US for the Philippines. In both cases, this is due to being under the rule of those countries in their history. Taiwan being under Japan for 50 years, and the Philippines being under Spain for 300+ years, followed by periods of American and Japanese rule. To put it simply though:
Taiwan is "mini-Japan with a very Chinese culture".
The Philippines is "former colony of Spain with lots of American influences".
But unlike the author, I've never set foot in any Western country, so my understandings are strictly what I've observed in media, which while it can be accurate, doesn't compare to actually experiencing the culture.
Some further elaboration on most points:
#1 We quite literally use chopsticks for everything. We use it to pick rice, viands, vegetables, fruit, smaller desserts, almost all the food you can think of.
But where do you put your chopsticks when you're not using them? Just put them on top of your bowl or flat on your plate. But do not ever stick them vertically. It's taboo, since it looks like incense sticks, which we use to pray for those who have passed, like our ancestors or during funerary services.
Tumblr media
#3 The majority of Asia is obsessed with fair/white skin. In my time at the Philippines, I grew up watching all these Dove Whitening commercials and my classmates often commented on how fair my skin was, how they envied it etc. In Taiwan, girls often say they don't want to 變黑 (biàn hēi) 'become dark'. Japan and Korea too are not innocent of this either (if their beauty/skin products weren't a dead giveaway).
People here at Taiwan often mistake me for being from Hong Kong or Japan (as long as I don't speak Mandarin with my heavy accent xD). A Taiwanese classmate of mine joked that she often gets mistaken for being from Southeast Asia due to having a darker complexion. And while I laughed it off with her at that time, looking back, I now realize she was lowkey being racist. xD
And believe me Filipinas have mentioned literally being told 'your skin is so dark' here in Taiwan, or being given backhanded compliments like 'you're pretty despite having dark skin' and...*facepalms*
My point is, beauty is not exclusive to skin color. People who still think that are assholes.
Tumblr media
#5 Not to say we don't have salt and pepper, but yes soy sauce and vinegar are the classic condiments you see on the table, be it at home or at a restaurant.
And if I may add, Taiwanese love their pepper. xD If you ever get to eat at a night market or a smaller "Mom n' Pop-style" restaurant here, some dishes/soups tend to add quite an excessive amount of pepper. Not like anthills, but quite liberally and way more than average. Enough that you see traces of pepper at the bottom of the food paper bag or swirling in your soup. xD
#6 I know this all too well from personal experience. In my years of studying at Taiwan, I always had roommates. 3 in my first school (I graduated high school in the Philippines pre K-12 so I had to make up 2 years of Senior High), followed by 2 in college, with the exception of 1 in freshman year.
My college did offer single person dorms but at around 9000 NTD ($324) per month compared to around 6000 NTD ($216) per semester. Because I wanted to save, the choice was obvious for me xD. But ah, this doesn't mean I don't value personal space, in fact I love having the room to myself, and since both my roomies would go home to their families every weekend, weekends were bliss for me xD
And you don't have to be friends with your roommates (that's an added bonus however), you just have to get along with them. I was quite lucky to have really great roommates all throughout my schooling years.
#9 In the Philippines, we do. Owing mostly to American influences and maybe being predominantly Catholic? xD
#10 *sigh* Chinese parents and parents from similar Asian cultures tend to put too much emphasis on grades, so much that kids could get sent to cram school as early as elementary. This is because what school you get into could literally affect your future job opportunities, and while that's not exclusive to any particular country/culture, I feel it's especially pronounced here in Asia. I'm really lucky my own parents weren't that strict about it. However, if your parents don't point the mistakes out to you, chances are you'll do it yourself, if you're an Asian kid like me anyway. xD It just becomes a habit.
#11 My family is an exception to this. xD We do say 'I love you' directly, but complete with the 'ah eat well ok?', 'don't scrimp on food', 'sleep well' and similar indirect words/actions of affection. We were doing 'Conceal, Don't Feel' before it became popular. xD
Tumblr media
#13 I'm kind of confused about this but this has sort have changed over the years in which eye-contact is now more encouraged. But don't stare, especially at elders and authority figures. Sometimes it's just shyness though. xD And I've observed this with my own Taiwanese friend, especially when I'm complaining or ranting to her about something. xD I'm a person who likes to express my opinions strongly, which tends to scare/alienate some of the locals here, as doing so is kind of frowned upon. Thankfully, she does listen and offers her take on things.
#14 Ah this. xD In the Philippines, this is a common greeting known as beso-beso, and I freaked out too when an auntie did that to me. xD Needless to say, Mom lectured me later on what that was. ^^"
#16 Along with #3 another crazy beauty standard. In my view, people always look better with a little meat on them and when they're not horribly thin. Asia still has a loonng way to go with accepting different types of bodies if you ask me. This combined with modern beauty standards has made the pressure for women especially to 'look beautiful' higher than ever.
Tumblr media
I know many people love them but please, starving yourself or glorifying eating disorders is never OK just to get this kind of 'ideal' body. I'm not part of the Kpop fandom, but even I think when idols get bullied just for gaining the least bit of weight among other insensitive comments, that's really going too far.
#17 'If you want to make friends, go eat.' <- I couldn't agree more. In the Philippines we have a greeting: 'Kumain ka na ba?' (Have you eaten?) . Similarly in Taiwan, we have 吃飯了沒? (chī fàn le méi), both of these can mean that in the literal sense but are often used as greetings instead. By then which invitation to having lunch/dinner together may or may not follow. Food really is a way for us to socialize and to catch up with what's going on in each other's lives. Not to say we don't have regular outings like going out to the mall, going shopping, etc. but eating together is a huge part of our culture, be it with family or friends.
And while I'm at it, some memes that are way too accurate good to pass up xD
Tumblr media
Parents, uncles, aunties alike will fight over the bill xD
Tumblr media
Alternatively:
Tumblr media
You just space out until your name is called xD
Tumblr media
My parents are guilty of the last one. Logic how? xD
#18 True. xD I like giving compliments out to people but I have a hard time accepting them myself, though I've learnt how to accept them much more now than before. We're kind of raised to constantly downplay ourselves so we often say things like 'ah no no' or 'I'm really not that good'. The downside of this of course is that it can come off as somewhat fake. xD
Again from personal experience, that same classmate who made the lowkey racist remark, she was good, she was on the debate team, was a honor student, knew how to mingle with people, but she downplayed herself way too much, while praising me but I honestly thought that she never really meant it from how she treated me. She wanted to keep me around her yet make backhanded compliments at me and she didn't want me socializing with my other classmate who is now my friend. *sigh* It was only after discussing this with one of my roomies did I realize how this 'excessive downplaying' might come off to people like me who more or less grew up with a more 'Westernized' mindset. I'm not saying brag about your achievements but don't be overly humble about them either, which can also be a turn off.
#20 We do tend to be a lot more realistic on how we view things, neither entirely optimistic nor pessimistic. We try to think of things practically and often analyze things on pure logic. A downside of this however, is that Chinese people can be overly practical. Taiwanese for instance don't like to 'find inconveniences' and generally keep to themselves, meaning, they won't help you in your hour of need even when they do have the capabilities. Sounds really harsh I know, but in my 6 years of living in Taiwan, while this doesn't apply to all the people, a lot of them really do only find/talk to you when they need something.
So for some people saying Taiwanese are 'friendly', that's BS xD If you ask me, Filipinos are infinitely more friendly, and again while not all, generally make more of an effort to help you when you need it. I really felt more of a real sense of community during my years growing up in the Philippines compared to Taiwan.
#21 Children do tend to stay with their parents well into college and adulthood, since Chinese families are indeed very family-oriented, in a lot of cases, grandparents often live under the same roof as us as well! And it really does save a lot of money. I see there's a real stigma in the US when it comes to "living with your parents", but that's starting to change especially because of Covid and having more and more people move back in with their parents.
Housing unfortunately is pretty much hella expensive no matter where you go, and Taiwan is no exception. Steep housing prices and the very high cost of raising a child (schooling + buxiban fees, etc.) contribute to a very low birth rate and thus an aging population like Japan. It's not uncommon to see both parents working in Taiwan.
#23 I'm an overthinker myself, but I totally agree with the author that the best is to strike a good balance between these two. Which I guess is why I love drawing or any other related creative attempts, it helps me be more spontaneous or well, creative! I like to remain intellectually or artistically inspired.
#24 Is French high school really like that? xD My friend did watch SKAM France and more or less got a culture shock from what was depicted on the show. I can confirm however that most high schools both in the Philippines and Taiwan require students to wear a uniform, only in college is everybody free to wear casual/civilian clothes.
#26 Ah this is part of our Asian gift-giving etiquette xD We always open gifts later after the event/meeting and in private. Never open them in front of the person who gave it to you or in front of others. This is to prevent any 'shame/embarrassment' that may result both to yourself and to the gift giver. I know this may come off as something weird since some people may want a more honest response or immediate feedback when it comes to gift-giving, but that's just how it is in our culture. You're always free to ask us though (in private) if we liked the gift or not ^^"
#28 I want to say the same goes to drinking, partying, and drugs however xD Those are things which are still frowned upon in our culture. And to be honest, whenever I see those in movies, it does kind of turn me off xD It doesn't mean that we're "uncool" or "boring", we just think that there are much better or healthier ways of "having fun".
#31 Is this true in France?! Man I would kind of prefer that instead of people being on their phones all the time xD This kind of goes with #20 in that Chinese are overly practical or logical, and don't read fiction as much as nonfiction. My Taiwanese friend is an exception though, she's a bibliophile who loves the feel of paper books compared to e-books, and it's a trait of her that I like a lot. Both the Philippines and Taiwan however have a huge fanbase when it comes to manga and anime though.
I'm all for reading outside of "designated reading" at schools especially. Reading fiction improves your vocabulary too, and can be quite fun! It helps you imagine and really invest in a world/story, and if you ask me something that I feel Westerners are better at, they're more in touch with their emotions and creativity, and are thus much more able to write compelling or original stories. Believe me, I've seen a fair amount of Chinese movies that rip off Western movie plotlines xD
#33 Nothing much to add on here..except that since I'm a "weird" person, Mom often jokes that she got the wrong baby from the hospital. xD
#35 True. While I agree with the care and concern that your fellow community can give you, the downside of this is we tend to only hang out with our own people, e.g Chinese with Chinese, Taiwanese with Taiwanese, etc. I've seen too that it's especially hard to make friends in Japan and Korea as a foreigner. Not only is there the language barrier, but the differences in culture too. In a way, Asians can be pretty close-minded on getting to know other cultures or actually making friends with people from other countries. I know this all too well being half-Taiwanese/half-Filipino, being neither "Filipino" enough nor "Taiwanese" enough. xD It's more of people here being too used to what they're comfortable with.
#36 Oh this is something I feel that Chinese students and other students from similar cultures should really improve on. xD How will people respect you if you don't speak your mind?
I felt bad especially for my Spanish teacher in college, granted it was an introductory course (Spanish I and II) but the amount of times that our teacher had to prompt a student to recite/speak even with clear hints already made her (and me too) extremely frustrated. The thing is, these are college students, I personally feel they don't have any reason to be so shy of speaking and technically by not doing so they're slowing the pace of the class too much and a lot of time is wasted.
Unfortunately you can't always be very vocal with your thoughts and opinions in most Asian cultures. I would say strive for that, but at the same time, play your cards well, especially if you're in a workplace setting.
If you made it to the end, thank you for reading and here's a cookie! 🍪 I'm not perfect and there's bound to be something I missed so please let me know if you spotted anything wrong. Feedback/questions are very much welcome and please feel free to share about your country/culture's differences or similarities!

Do you think NK, and really a lot of the Asian countries, are Lactose Intolerant? I remember people saying that Asians tends to be lactose intolerant (my sister and I are and we’re Asian) so I was wondering if any of your Asian personifications are?
As it turns out, most of the world really is lactose intolerant outside of Europe, the rates just happen to be highest in East Asia and sub Saharan Africa.
Really the better question is “which nations are lactose intolerant but consume dairy anyway?”
China: Very intolerant, but can’t help himself. He will drink all the yummy milk teas and eat all the ice cream and load up things with cheese anyway. He can’t resist and isn’t about to lose out on a food experience because of lactose intolerance.
Japan: Intolerant, but less so than China. Still, he just isn’t a fan of dairy and doesn’t really eat much that contains it anyway.
South Korea: Very intolerant, but looks for ways around it. Milk products have made their way into his society so he either eats them in moderation, or uses soy substitutes where he can.
North Korea: Very intolerant and also just doesn’t really like it anyway. He finds most milk based products too sugary for his palate.
Taiwan: Intolerant, but basically deals with it the same as South Korea. Maybe a little more daring about it because she loves milk tea.
Hong Kong: The least intolerant out of East Asia, because England’s influence actually rubbed off something good for once. He developed more of a tolerance due to living with England at a young age. He usually takes his tea with milk.
Macau: Quite intolerant, but knows his limits and is smart about it to where you probably wouldn’t know. Tries and fails to hold back China.
Singapore: Similar to Hong Kong, except he doesn’t like anything in his tea. Kopi is a different story and he will load up there.
Philippines: Relatively tolerant compared to the others, which is good because he’s more impulsive like China.
Indonesia: Intolerant, but doesn’t have much desire to consume it. Sometimes he’ll drink those cute little flavored indomilk boxes though.
Malaysia: Intolerant, just tries to consume in moderation.
Thailand: Intolerant, but drinks it anyway because he heard it will make him stronger.
Vietnam: Very intolerant and actively avoids it.
Mongolia: Slightly less intolerant than most of the others, but doesn’t have many reasons to consume it.
India: Not intolerant! And rubs it in China’s face.

THE GREAT MIKU CONCERT WATCH PARTY 2020-2021
Hey there Vocaloid fans! Are you as bummed about the cancelation of Miku Expo 2020 USA & Canada as I am? Maybe you’re looking to build up your excitement ahead of Magical Mirai at the end of the year? Or maybe you just want to take a look back at a decade of live Miku music~
Starting tomorrow (October 10th, 2020) and for the next 20 WEEKENDS, Every Saturday at 4 PM (Chicago time) I will be hosting watch parties for concert movies and footage of Crypton’s official Hatsune Miku live shows. We’re gonna take a look back at a decade’s worth of Hatsune Miku concerts, watch them evolve over the years, compare the shows across different regions, and just have fun gushing over fun music, lights, and sets. I know an awful lot about these concerts, so I’ll be adding in a lot of history, behind-the-scenes info, trivia, and commentary as we watch. Most weekends I’ve planned two concerts per stream, with a few exceptions. Also, since this will overlap with ExtraLife a bit, these will be charity streams as well!
If that sounds like something you might be into, give me a follow over at twitch.tv/CloudyObsession and read below the page break for the schedule and more information!
An important note: because it would be illegal for me to stream these concerts to my Twitch channel directly, I will be providing a YouTube* link in the panels below my stream where viewers can find the video we are watching, and on-screen I will have a thumbnail-sized window of the video with no audio, as well as large timer displaying the video’s playtime so that you can be sure to sync your video up with mine (otherwise my stream will mostly just be my webcam and mic audio).  Unfortunately, this means you will have to open the video in a separate window while keeping the stream open, I’m sorry for the inconvenience but it’s the only way I can make it work
*I have made sure each of the concerts on the schedule are available for viewers to watch, I tried to keep it exclusively to videos on YouTube, but there were a few important shows (in my opinion, anyway) that are not available on YT, but are available on BiliBili. Bilibili is a Chinese video hosting site similar to Nico Nico Douga. Unfortunately, the site is entirely in Chinese and may be a little hard to navigate for the unfamiliar, on top of requiring an account for HD streaming (although no account is needed for SD streams). Only 3 of the 40+ concerts I plan I have scheduled will be on Bilibili, and I will denote which those are on the schedule. It’s also worth noting that while I have verified that these videos are not blocked in the US, I can’t guarantee their availability in other regions, so if you are outside the US you may need a VPN to watch some of the concerts.
Here is a quick look at the schedule! You can also click each week for a brief explanation of the theme and a more in-depth look at the concerts we’ll be watching (only the first few are available, this is a work in progress).

Do you ever want to go back to China to connect with your heritage ? I heard that Chinese people in Malaysia don't like Chinese people from China is that true?
Not really I guess? I heard that it's impossible to use basic Internet services/apps there without a VNP.
I used to visit Hong Kong and Macau a lot, so I've technically been near to China. But I didn't cross over to China cos I'm not keen on the app restrictions.
I have a classmate in college that invited me to her family's farm. She lives near Shanghai I think. So who knows, maybe I'll go one day 😂
I'm actually from Singapore, not Malaysia. We celebrate a lot of Chinese holidays here, but it's not as "authentic" as China I guess. Since we usually add a local twist to everything 😂
^ I can't speak for Malaysia, but it's kinda true here sometimes. Some people here are just... really xenophobic. Things were kinda bad when covid first started. Some of the local Chinese here started making "dog/bat eater" and "disease spreader" comments online towards Chinese from China 😰
I just wish people would stop being mean...

Cop-thing-anon here:
(I don't believe in the blue lives matter thing by the way)
I do get where you're coming from. I guess I see the thing about cops and cop AUs differently because the police is different and not as fucked up in my country. The thing about the fanart is just..I think you're reading too much into it. I don't think the artist really focused on the skin colour of Sokka, I mean, it's a kids show. Skin colour was never really mentioned or important in atla. But Sokka's personality is most likely why the artist was inspired to draw him as a "gangster", with azula (the villain) being a cop. It is kind of insensitive to draw that with the events going on, but I think that a lot of people in the fandom take some things way too seriously, for a kids show back in the late 2000's anyway.
hey anon, I say this with love and I am being sincere. I'm gonna need you to rewatch the show if you think skin color didn't matter. and it doesn't matter where you live because there is no part of the world, no culture, that isn't shaped by colonialism. I don't mean to be condescending so please bear with me, I truly believe in educating people as a part of allyship and anti-racism.
Anon, please know that I am not angry or anything but sincere in what I’m about to say. Just bear with me because I know that unlearning shit is difficult and can be painful, but we’ve gotta do it. I do appreciate you wanting to have this conversation at all. And I’m not writing this just for your benefit - this is for anyone who wants to learn about why A) race is a part of ATLA’s narrative and B) why critical analysis of mass media is actually important. So I’m not assuming you don’t know basic things about this stuff, I’m not trying to be condescending.
Now we’re gonna fix colonialism and imperialism XD wee okay here we go.
No matter where you live in the world you have some awareness of skin color. Your understanding of race might be different than mine, in fact it probably is. Race as we know it today is a social construct that stems from many things (and I wrote several hundred words on it but it was too much and too far removed from the point I’m trying to make so I edited all of that out. Yay.)
You don’t usually see imperialism, one of the major themes in Avatar, without colonialism. Imperialism is slightly different than colonialism - you can think of it like the ideology behind the practice of colonialism.* Imperialism can be used to describe expansionism in general - which has been going on since the bronze age lol humans, I stg - but usually when people today refer to colonialism and imperialism they’re talking about imperialism starting in the 17th century.
Now imperialism is not just a European concept. ATLA is set in a world that we know is supposed to be like a combination of different Asian cultures (with some influences from the Americas). And the Fire Nation is clearly influenced by Imperial Japan. So briefly:
Japan had a policy of sakoku (chained or closed country) which kept it mostly isolated (out of concerns that Japan would fall victim to something like the Opium Wars in China, among other things) from the rest of the world for a couple hundred years until the 1850s when a US Naval commander named Matthew Perry (I am not kidding) forced Japan to open its borders for trade to the United States by gunboat diplomacy, an oxymoron if I have ever seen one before.
Japan ended up signing unequal treaties with a lot of Western countries, and this bred xenophobia and hostility in Japan. The Emperor who signed these treaties died of smallpox, and after some internal conflict his son decided try to renegotiate these treaties. The US and European countries were not interested in renegotiating dick but the mission wasn’t unsuccessful because the diplomats A) exchanged some islands with Russia and B) were inspired by western economic policy and society to “modernize” Japan. Japan began industrialization and it converted to a market economy with the help of the US and other western powers.
So over many years, Japan went to war with China, Korea, Russia (and took back some of the land they exchanged with them), and others. From wikipedia:
Using its superior technological advances in naval aviation and its modern doctrines of amphibious and naval warfare, Japan achieved one of the fastest maritime expansions in history. By 1942 Japan had conquered much of East Asia and the Pacific, including the east of China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma (Myanmar), Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, part of New Guinea and many islands of the Pacific Ocean.
But ATLA is not a Japanese story. The Fire Nation is not Imperial Japan. The Earth Kingdom is not China or Korea, the Air Nomads are not Tibetan monks, and the Water Tribes are not Inuit. The creators definitely drew heavy inspiration from all of these places and others, but ATLA is a story written by American people in the United States for American kids. It is an American story.
And it was created at a time when the United States was victimizing people in Afghanistan and Iraq (and other places) in many similar ways to how the Fire Nation victimized people. In fact, the show starts in the Southern Water Tribe, which represent Inuit people, indigenous people in Alaska, Canada and Greenland, I think it’s safe to assume that the genocide being referenced here is not one by Japan but rather by European colonizers and later by the United States and Canada.
Imperialism is in the show’s DNA.
And so is racism. In our world they are inherently connected. And visual cues from the show along with things the characters say suggest that we are meant to make the comparison between our world and the ATLA world. Every story has a purpose - it doesn’t have to be political, but for Avatar it is political, it is anti-imperialist.
In this article about how ATLA resonates with us in 2020, Aina Khan of the Guardian interviews Professor Ali A Olomi about using ATLA to teach at Penn State. “One of the things we see with the Fire Nation is the ideological justification for what they’re doing. We are a glorious civilization. We have abundance, we have wealth, we have technological advancement; we need to share it with the rest of the world. That’s almost word for word European colonisation.”
Zuko and Azula both call Katara a peasant. In fact, Azula calls her a dirty peasant. This is one step away from calling her a s*vage I mean come on. While peasant might just be purely classist (lol no) because Zuko and Azula are royalty, um it’s clearly racialized classism because of real life context. There is real history with colonizers calling indigenous people this, dismissing their cultures as primitive and barbaric.
Add into the mix colorism, which is bias against darker skin and privileges fair skin (which is a byproduct of imperialism) and you have clear race shit happening in Avatar.
When I saw that fanart, I was immediately reminded of black lives matter of course, but mainly of the fact that indigenous peoples are also at high risk of being victimized by police. Not just in the US. And how gross it is to depict a colonizer like Azula as an angry cop (representing the state) turning her gun on an indigenous man who is dressed like a gangster which... yike.
Mass media influence everything we do. The messaging we get, our politics, what we want to eat for dinner because we’re hungry and have been writing this stupid essay for three hours LOL. It’s important that people think critically about what they consume. Otherwise you get the goddamn United States with half of our population stanning a racist fraud. You want to know why US Americans are so ignorant? Because our education system sucks, because we don’t have any real media literacy. But apparently the rest of the world has some fucking nerve making fun of Americans** because all of us suck at it. No one is thinking critically about media.
A really terrifying thing about people is our ability to take whatever message we want from stories, even if it is in direct contradiction with the narrative of a story. There’s a movie called American History X which is explicitly anti-fascist, but because it’s a drama and Ed Norton is cut and looks badass and uncucked or whatever LOL, the iconography in that movie is fairly popular with neo-nazis. Yike. This is not at that level of course, this is some random niche fanart for a rare pairing.
For better or for worse, US media and entertainment gets a lot of attention and people around the world eat it up. Maybe you don’t need to know every little detail about US American shit, and I know we tend to dominate media, but black lives matter is not just a 2020 thing. People have known about it for years, since it started. If that fanart was created in 2019, which I think it was, the BLM movement had already existed for six years. If you’re watching an American show like Avatar and you’re making fanart on social media but you don’t know what BLM is in 2019... well educate yourself lmao.
Considering that Black fans have expressed frustration and discomfort in fandoms over and over again, and I am sure indigenous fans have too because fandoms are racist sometimes, it’s important that white fans help make fandoms better. And I am a white fan, and I consider myself an anti-racist. Which means I have to be active about racism when I see it.
btw I found this great essay by @cobra-diamond which you should read if you want more details about the similarities between Japan and the Fire Nation.
* that is very reductive but it’s fine lol
** I am kidding, unless you are english feel free to make fun of americans for non-gun, non-trauma related things pls
