do you ever just go to a kdrama meetups and events irl (they are hard to come by) and the people there talk about that they isn’t enough strong female characters and you are just sitting there going all ????? because a). you can easily do a week worth of dedicated posts about some of the amazing female characters in kdramas and their complexity despite how often their genres and the society they are written for wants to put them in a box on your blog. But also b). you hate the term ‘strong female character’ because we never talk about male characters that way. They are just interesting or not. And that’s also what female characters should be. Interesting and complex with agency in stories. And they often get sidelined in the stories... but also from the largely female audience of those shows who don’t really care as much about them as the hot male lead. And there is such a strong need for female characters to be likeable no matter what which can hinder them from truly being too complex, while we can watch the same asshole architype in male characters but are just misunderstood and interesting.
also as a writer who has been told more than once that a female character of mine is just not likeable enough and I should fix that, this annoys me. Fuck strong female characters, that does not make them interesting and being stoic  instead of emotional isn't necessarily better, and fuck making all female characters so likeable that they can't do anything. Make them complex, flawed and unlikeable, even if it makes the audience agitated because the female character isn't likeable or sidelined for the sake of everyone's else’s stories or so the audience can insert themselves into them, as a blank slate.
The writer can lay the groundwork for why the female character is acting the way she is, but the audience will complain that she is being mean to the cute male lead. It’s a bit more complex and complicated than just ‘kdramas don’t have enough strong characters’ that needs to be examined. Like the bias of the audience and the expectations that the wants of the audience have molded over the years.
But you don’t say anything, because you are non-confrontational and don’t want to speak over the people who are actually speaking and this level of public speaking makes you anxious.

i mean this in the least weird possible i promise but. i think that you get an extra layer of delight in reading tged and 약 파는 황태자 if you're used to consuming korean content. i'm not saying you're missing something important from them if you don't do this but,,,, i do think there are certain little details and humor that probably don't hit quite as much if you're not familiar with some of the culture and humor lol
it's just the little things, like lloyd calling javier "this punk" or "this guy" even while talking directly with him, because it feels sorta awkward in english, but if you're used to watching series or movies in korean you can almost hear the tone in which he's saying it.
or when javier is teasing lloyd and he hits too close at home and lloyd just goes "hey" but you can almost heart the "야" which is very close but not quite. or this little 'haah' he does when he's kind of frustrated or thinking hard about something.
or that you don't quite get why it's such a deal that julian started calling lloyd 'older brother' cause the translation doesn't use the word 'hyung'. or that the point of javier and lloyd's bet was that if lloyd lost he would call javier, someone younger than him, 'hyung' which would imply he's older and is a form of showing respect or affection. which is completely different from the 'master' they used in the translation. or how sweet and kind of sad it is that theodore still calls rakiel 'hyung' even when the whole court expects them to be against each other.
or just in general the way the dialogue flows feels much more natural when you consider that it was originally written in korean and not in english
it just,, small things that you don't quite notice unless you already have experience in dealing with a different language than the one you were raised with akjshdkja

hi i'm stalking your orv posts and i saw u say that orv has colorism issues? can you expound on that because when i was reading the novel i think i missed that bit
Ah, so with the novel it's actually not much of a problem, but the thing is that the webtoon adaptation and official art has a tendency to make the protags whiter than paper and the webtoon in particular, when I was posting about this more, had so far like only given villains darker skin tones. This honestly happens all the time in east asian media, but the reason I'm particularly peeved about it with ORV is that I distinctly remembered Yoo Joonghyuk being described as both the most beautiful man in the world and also a man with tan skin and black eyes, which felt really important to me personally bc I grew up Asian American and had to unlearn those things being equated w/ ugliness/plainness by both colorism and racism lmao.

I'm gonna be honest. I forget canon kon is white now because I only consume fanon content most of the time so I'm like. yeah this is kon! and then I see a comic screenshot and get whiplash cuz my brain thinks ur version is correct
before i actually read the comics literally every kon i saw was poc so my mind was just like oh okay this is definitely gonna affect my brain perception of this character 🙏
headcanoning is a very interesting concept because it can add a layer or recontextualize canon but you also have to keep in mind that canon will contradict your hcs sometimes because it doesnt have the things that make things like a sexuality or ethnicity unique, if that makes sense (well duh, it was written by primarily cishet white men who are writing from a specific lens). for example, the smallville setting is very white in my opinion and if canon kon actually wasnt white then the story might have had a new layer of storytelling to explore. but his feeling of intense out-of-placeness and the struggle with identity is something that is very relatable to me so oops if i let a lil projection slip out you know? and the fact the superfam are immigrants and kon’s journey with proving he’s worthy of being a kryptonian and worthy of being a super? it’s just sooo relatable. i definitely tend to attach myself to these type of stories. if you were to ask me to write an official dc comic of him id comply with his real canon but there’d definitely be subtext id sprinkle in for people like me to relate to if ur looking for it🤷🏻‍♀️
however it’s also good to actually read stories that were built with these lenses and intentions rather than just hcs because those stories will take that potential where it needs to go.
sorry that was very rambly 💀

There's just something so magical in the way that japanese media with no other translations is being enjoyed by not only english speaking people but by other people as well. We all banded together to rely on the fan translations or the others learning japanese for the sake of being able to understand the source media of something we all really like. It's so sweet in that way.

I might just go on a huge tangent on here so I sincerely apologize, but I think this is something you've slightly touched on before, so maybe it's interesting to you? About the fact that literally Nobody on the staff/people who work behind the scenes of everything in the kpop industry are credited, mentioned or acknowledged for their work (other than, for example, the surface level “the designer deserves a raise!!!” that i so often see in mv comments :/). What I wanted to talk about specifically though is the company’s complete lack of crediting of these people?? I wanted to look into who directed this new mv that just dropped that I really liked the artistry, editing, and general composition of, but I found absolutely nothing across the group’s yt videos or their pages of who the director is, perhaps the set designer, editor, etc. Utterly taken aback, I checked the descriptions of other kpop music videos, from the most popular to more unknown groups (Twice, Dongkiz, to name a few), and again, nothing. I thought I was going insane, so I looked at mvs for like Amercian bands, and their video details are completely filled with the information of the producer, the recording studio, mixer, master, etc. etc, my point is: so much more than just the group’s twitter or merch page??? I’m like what is going on?? I noticed the kpop mv's only list licensing info at least, but so did the american ones? Idk. It’s either me not knowing where to look, or maybe I’m late to the fact that that is just how things work with kpop group companies or the industry as whole, just giving you no details as to who the hell else worked on this mv or song. I love my biases and appreciate their contributions, but I do not buy for a second that, more often than not, they wrote or produced or mixed absolutely nothing. I think it’s a huge shame that this is done because it reinforces the false idea that the idols are the ones responsible for everything we’re seeing and listening to. Maybe that’s the point, and that’s exactly what the industry wants you to believe, which that just makes it really sad. (Wait also maybe it all gets hidden because its work for hire or the companies buy ownership copyright...)
so i want to clarify some things for you, from the perspective of someone who works in the arts industry. firstly, and most importantly: visible credits exist in western filmic media because of unions. and there are still a LOT of fields that are not unionized. for thousands of years it was fundamentally understood that no performance based art form was done singularly by an individual, so there was often not a reason for there to be 'credits' in the first place. the whole assuming the face of the project is the person who did the most work thing? that's a very new phenomenon in the history of art, and it's capitalism's fault.
secondly: um. you are definitely not looking in the right places bc people are ABSOLUTELY credited? especially music production staff? i guess if you only look at a music video then sure yea there's not always credits there, but companies literally release tracklists and highlight medleys on their main social medias AS PROMOTION that have LISTS of their arrangers and composers. hell, tan's most recent tracklist has their fucking midi programmer on it????
Tumblr media
also..............the fucking ALBUMS HAVE CREDITS IN THEM. i can't believe i have to say this but THE ALBUMS ARE THE MAIN PRODUCT AND THEY HAVE PAGES OF CREDITS IN THEM. i...????
like???
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i got addy (@hoforwonho) to send these to me, these are from a lucy album and nayeon's album, and they literally have pages of credits???
lastly, and most importantly: the only people who are being 'fooled' into thinking that idols are 'producing' most of the content are western fans. because that is the stereotype promoted BY THE WESTERN MUSIC INDUSTRY. so that is the lens through which you view the korean music industry. koreans and korean fans are well aware that idols do not produce their own artistic content, there is quite literally a stigma around idols in sk about how they are not viewed as artists SPECIFICALLY because of this. gdragon and jonghyun were HUGE deals for being some of the first idol producers + songwriters. music is a huge part of the korean entertainment industry and people who make music are very much a visible part of it. kim eana is a very famous lyricist and she has a popular radio show. kbs just did a whole competition show featuring producers as the contestants. companies are not required to put credits in music videos because music videos are only one part of a kpop cb, and they are also not obligated to put those credits in english. just because you can't find something doesn't mean that it doesn't exist and the whole industry is at fault for it.
#listen. i'm sorry to say this but it's not the industry's fault that you don't read korean and don't know how to look something up#companies do not need to constantly post every single credit for everything on social media stop expecting stuff to be fed to you#kpop questions#also: most kpop fans genuinely do not give a shit about the credits. if someone wants to know#they will go looking in the most obvious places for them#also also: not having the credits plastered everywhere on social media is partially a protection mechanism!#kpop fans are known for fucking stalking and harassment are you kidding me#and there ARE kpop mvs with credits in the actual mvs? i can think of at least three from the last year off the top of my head???#and one of them IS a dkz mv??????????#answers#text#bts literally got popular bc they copied the western model of pretending that the art they produce is 'authentic' and self produced#that's why they blew up. i've talked about this several times#its the western model and western fans that are perpetuating this viewpoint.#also oh my god mama has a BUNCH of creative awards are you just fucking thick????#and i cant even believe im about to say this but. THE BIG FOUR COMPANIES ARE LITERALLY FOUNDED BY FUCKING SONGWRITERS AND PRODUCERS#YG LSM JYP BANG SIHYUK WERE ALL ARTISTS AT ONE POINT#OR STILL ACTIVELY ARE WORKING#...........i feel like i need to lay down#m8 how do you think i know who choreographers and producers are. of fucking course people are credited did you think i was guessing????

I was in the supercorp team… but you all are giving me fandom envy
hey buddy!!!! I haven't seen supergirl but I've always loved the gifs of super Corp, Kara seems sweet and lena seems so kickass!
and haha, the grass is always greener I think however the mdzs/wangxian fandom is pretty fun. it's so large that I can literally just lurk, read fic and Have Brain Rot.
the story is so expansive that once you realize you like it, you're in too deep. I always recommend giving it a go because there is something for everyone. there are excellent fic writers too and a lot of them a wlw who write the ship as is and also as f/f so it's like you have the most popular fic writers who also write f/f content (we are so spoiled in this fandom!)
just fyi most ppl watched the Netflix show, however its based on a novel that is the 'real' story...the series of Netflix had to be adapted to censorship so the plot line is a bit different but the overarching themes are there. there is also a donghua (chinese animation/cartoon) version and YouTube should have free episodes as well (the cartoon is great with the supernatural stuff, the cgi in the live show isn't the best but the actors in the live action sold their relationship even with censorship!)

I was actually going to send an ask about that cause i was talking with a friend recently, and we were talking about how much we love that Charlie was Made Mancunian instead of something like a Londoner as I know they were going for the Britpop/Oasis 'troubled British musician' aesthetic, but Mancunians are like some of the nicest people in the UK, its gotta be that tram. We were talking about How they never met, but if they did, how Charlotte and Charlie could have formed a really funny friendship due to that North/South Divide. Like people joke but as someone from the UK that north-south divide is nasty, like you tell someone from the North you're moving to London they look at you like you've gone insane/Bonkers if you will. I cannot overstate just how snarky that friendship would be. Especially since Charlotte is from Sussex, a manc like Charlie is going to be bullying her as soon as she walks through the door. Like the poorest part of Sussex still gets more money than the most deprived part of Manchester, which also leads me to believe due to how it is, both Naomi and Charlie's snark might have a lil venom in it due to it really is a battlefield between Northerns and Southerners. Desmond also like Desmond is half Peruvian which is probably why he isn't like this, but I'm surprised he doesn't just full ham sarcastic talking to other British characters again that north-south divide is nasty, and he's a Scotsman everyone south of him is a southerner even Charlie and Naomi who were probably like a three-hour car drive away. My final point is i really think it would have been funny as to an American audience and every non-British character (Except people like Daniel who spent time in the UK ) it must look like a really advanced form of hate like imagine seeing people with nonsense accents bully someone else who lives an hour away with a nonsense accent cause they get their drinking water from caves instead of vast lakes.
miles: whoa naomi and charlotte really hate each other huh
daniel, who knows better: they're good friends actually
miles: [confused in american] ???
alas lost was written by americans who had no idea of the nuances of british culture. like, the only reason charlie specifically has manc energy is because it comes from dom's own brick soaked soul
like without being told, i am sure than it was dom's idea for charlie to coo over baffonee pie, a beloved northern dessert
(that's banana and toffee pie, babes!)
i woulda loved to have known how they woulda written charlie interacting with my beloved science trio. sure it wouldn't have been my delightfully indulgent internal fanfics but I Want it
i think des never made any playful jabs about charlie being english because he's not the type of person to give a fuck. yes i know the rivalries run deep but des is 1. pretty non-judgemental, 2. he has more important things to care about and 3. english pussy got him acting unwise. uh basically class and money divide fucks over des' mind, not country/culture divide
the show was never equipped to handle this so this is just my imagination but it seems more like charlie would be the one who cares about things like where you're from. not in a nasty way, but he'd at least think about it. his relationship with that posh girl lucy would have, deep down, made him feel worthless. espech with charlie's fixation on Taking Care Of His Loved Ones
and charlie being a manc really does add a lot to his character in ways i doubt the writers even realised. the dream version of megan pace cooing to charlie that he's going to save them with his musical talent, like he grew up with this need to make himself better than how he started. the punk aspects of him also tie into him being a manc because the Fuck The System and I Wanna Escape attitudes are super fucking common amongst northerners. it's a running joke that northerners suffer and whine all the time. charlie is a very northern character, almost stereotypically so. this is partly cuz of dom and partly cuz they based him on aspects of the northern music scene
i'm not saying all northerners are whiny angry little punk bitches. but charlie is and him being a manc adds like, a layer to it? also also the intersection between lower class english views of masculinity + the idea that charlie is bi and trans is utterly fascinating to me
but i digress. i don't get to talk about charlie being from the north enough, partly because like, i know most lost fans are americans who would just be smiling and nodding dumbfounded as i meme'd
but i do like to be educational. long story short, guys? manchester is a highly industrial part of the north of england and is riddled with poverty and violence and basically everybody who lives there are like the most depressed people in england (dom himself has expressed that he's proud to be a mancurian but happy he escaped)
so, like, manchester is the detroit of england. i hope that helps

so i've been keeping a spreadsheet to track the bls/asian dramas i've watched this year [my current goal is 50 shows on the spreadsheet by end of year, we're up to 21 completely filled out rows so we are well on our way!] and like i can't make the full thing public bc i get, uh, rude about some shows skdjfnsdkfns but thought i would share some highlights illustrating how completely extra it is bc i think it's funny and, you know, if anyone ever feels not normal about the things they are into, i am here to tell u that u should go absolutely crazy and stupid. keep a color-coded, meticulously annotated spreadsheet for ur silly gay shows. do whatever sparks joy. life is short and love is long u know what i mean
Tumblr media
[my friend was like you have two separate overall ratings?? and my answer was yes. obviously. don't you.]
Tumblr media
[YES i recommend 3 will be free for any and all audiences. LITERALLY WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE EVEN WAITING FOR.]
Tumblr media
[i did watch the eclipse for the plot why do you ask]
Tumblr media
[you thought i would make a post about my silly little asian dramas and not shamelessly plug the gay chicken show? we must laugh]

why anyone feels compelled to wish ill on any group is fucking beyond me and again again again it needs to be said that asking if “x will be the next y” is so direspectful to both artists and their work
#also yeah … planning to remove yourself from learning about korean cultural or using korean products or w/e#during the hiatus comes across as fetishizing korean culture etc more than anything else#like if it’s only relevant to you bc of a group and when that group takes a break you could give less about it… idk like#sk exists outside of said group#and i’m really tired of the view of kpop as one genre making people (mostly western media and whoever) think only one act can succeed#newsflash is that’s not true and it’s unfair to all the artist in question to presume or search for shoe filling#as for anger about it… i think ultimately if you don’t have a true understand for the sk law or culture/social sphere surrounding it all#it’s not your place to truly condemn or otherwise#wish them well on their enlistment and let it be#i think people can feel a bit of pride that they’ve decided to just go forward with enlisting than trying to wait longer#which i know people view as good or bad but i’d imagine any sort of enlistment can come with anxieties but that’s not my place#anyways…………….. stupid question to ask is why we can’t all just get along#bc i know why LMAO nothing new to fandom anywhere#but gosh#like people need to shut up about no other groups succeeding like one or another#and tbh I thought I got over the exhaustion of being collectively referred in part with people i don’t agree with just bc we share fandom#but nope this is all something else#like seriously i think there’s people overreacting and similarly i think people are being dissensitive too#but anyways#alison speaks?#to be deleted probably
