Just finished the Adventures of Amine Al-Sirafi, please give me your favourite fantasy books with realistically portrayed faith!
Criteria are a) any faith but either a named real world one or something that's portrayed as analogous to that b) meaningful to the main character or major side characters c) if God/the gods act directly it's in the kind of way we would look for it in the real world
Currently on my list:
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik (MC Jewish)
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (MC Muslim, side characters various)
Katherine Kurtz (medieval England with the Church left in for once)
Thorn by Intisar Khanani (don't own a copy so can't remember if it's named but the feeling was there)
Magic Most Deadly by our very own @e-louise-bates (MC Anglican)
I would love to put more on the list, please help if you have some!

Thanks for the tag, @annabtg!
🍓 how did you get into writing fanfiction?
My babysitter 😅 The summer OotP came out, she introduced me to fanfiction while we waited for the book to come out, and helped me start writing my first fic after we each read OotP!
🍇How many fandoms have you written in?
4 if we're not counting RPF (I'm SORRY)
🍈 How many years have you been writing fanfiction?
Off and on for 21 years (jesus christ). My biggest break was between early college and 2022, where I went about 10 years without writing fic (though would still occasionally read). To be fair I was mostly writing screenplays, and aren't spec scripts a type of fanfiction? (I'd argue yes).
🍎 Do you read or write more fanfiction?
Definitely comes and goes in waves. I'd classify myself as writing more at this moment in time. I'm trying to get myself back into reading.
🍌 What is one way you've improved as a writer?
I think my dialogue sounds a lot more natural than it used to 10+ years ago! (I hope)
🍑 Do you have any bad habits as a writer?
So many. Using the same words over and over again, getting tangled up in my brain and not fully extrapolating on ideas I really want to write, taking on too much, etc.
🍍 What's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
I've definitely answered this before but Semaphore Signalling, and I didn't even USE it!
🍉What's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?
Someone screaming at me (in a positive way) is always fun. Live reacts are the creme de la creme but obviously that's way intense and I never ever ever expect that from anyone, but it's always such a nice surprise.
🍐What's the most fringe trope/topic you write about?
Oh god, I don't know that I write anything fringe? I feel like everything I write is pretty mainstream/standard. Maybe my Newsies AU?
🥭What is the hardest type of story for you to write?
Long-fic plotting is proving to be really daunting.
🍏What is the easiest type?
Angst :)
🍑Where do you do your writing? What platform? When?
On my couch in Google Docs. Sometimes I'll type stray ideas/sentences into Notion, but typically it's always Google Docs (or directly into Tumblr if I'm feeling wild).
🍋What is something you've been too nervous/ intimidated to write, but would love to write one day?
Okay since I'm actively working on the First War AU I guess I can't say that. I recently got an idea for a Time Loop fic and I think that's rather intimidating.
🍇What made you choose your username?
If you say it fast it sounds like "Kelsey" (with a bit of a twang).
Tagging @ghostofbambifanfiction, @eastwindmlk, @alittlebitofeverything23

What made you start writing fanfic?
MS QUESERAONE
These asks do not always appear on my phone, and it sometimes takes me loading coal into the engine of my laptop and then navigating to tumblr dot com to find them...
I started writing (terrible) fic as a teenager back in my Stargate SG-1 days, because I fell in love with Sam and Jack, and had only recently discovered that you were allowed to imagine scenarios in your head and not just say your prayers when you went to bed at night. (I also had a brief Pokemon phase, but I’m not gonna even bold that one.) That fic all disappeared in a Blue Screen of Death home PC crash back in the day, and I gave up on investing effort into digital files until I had a more reliable backup plan. Despite that, I recently discovered (and discarded, with love) pages of A4 notes I wrote in secondary school that were actually just Harry/Hermione or Sam/Jack fic starters. Love the dedication - in fountain pen, no less! - from teenage me!
After college, cue LiveJournal! And Fringe! And community fic prompts! I loved it so much. I definitely wrote 3 solid fics for Peter and Olivia back then, but I was very at sea in real life, and I didn't keep it up. I uploaded them to AO3 in recent years, and I’m glad they’ve been saved for posterity. That show was very important to me too.
After LiveJournal died/sold out to the Russians, I gave up once again, and didn't even really read fic in any of my following fandoms. But then came The Pandemic, and Lockdowns, and lots and lots of time to rewatch my favourite shows, and my brain decided to fixate on The Rookie and Lucy and Tim. I am not sorry. I was struck with the disease and forced to stay at home and go on my little mental health 2.5km walk loops, and my mind started to suggest that I could write fic again. That I'd done it before. That the brain pictures could meld into a story, and that fic archiving (with the advent of AO3) was a lot more reliable.
So, a few lockdowns later, along came "In the Hole Together", a spec-fic for 422 that was founded on fan-detectivery and paracetamol. And when people actually got interested, I thought this was something I might be able to do.
AND THEN THERE WAS ACTUAL 422.
And "Roots Won't Keep Me Warm" was born.
I've never ever written something so long, so detailed and so intense, and it became a personal challenge as much as a dedication to the readers that were following along. The only two rules I've set for myself since then are 1) Don't try to use song lyrics as titles anymore, Sil, and 2) Always finish a multi-chap.
The way my brain operates, I can only work on one fic at a time, so I never have written WIPs hanging around (though I have many, many head-plots, and some of them are even stored as bullet points in a google doc...). I hope that the one thing I will always do is finish out a fic to its conclusion, as it is absolutely an undertaking I most appreciate in the authors I love.
I had some extra time this (northern) summer (personal reasons) to devote to ChenfordWeek and finish my second Big Long Fic ("Shadows of Deception"), but it hasn't been sustainable since then, and it makes me very, very sad. I have been so harassed and harangued with real life, that I could barely even Do Imaginations for Chenford, and - to be frank - that has been critically depressing. It always has for me, since the days of SG-1.
I love writing fic, and I hope never to turn it into a job rather than a hobby, because that has never worked out well for me in the past. That said, I have you, Ms @queseraone, to thank for getting me to sit down and face the music this Christmas/Winter/Holiday season, and actually write some new Chenford content. And it is h a r d. It is hard to do the thinking and the linking and the typing. It is hard to find the time and the will and the motivation. It is hard to have a plan and then another plan and then discard it all when you actually sit down to type. But I am really happy to be doing it. I really am.
And I can’t wait for @chenfordsecretsanta to arrive, and to share in the joy of a whole batch of new fics in our little fandom! To have something to look forward to that is closer than February 20th. To have someone believe in me enough to persist in prodding and poking me into committing to this challenge.
So thank you. Thank you, and I love you, and I appreciate you.

What’s your fannish ID? roipecheur - the Fisher King from Arthurian legends, which weirdly has more to do with Black Sails than anything more directly related, but that is a long story. But that's why my icon on tumblr and AO3 is a kingfisher in in a crown. (It's not leroipecheur because I'm old enough to remember rage comics, tyvm)
What types of fanworks do you create? I write stuff! I used to make gifs, but I didn't really enjoy making them enough for the effort it took. If I make more, it will probably be for a laff and not for the ~*~aesthetic~*~ I like writing because if I have an idea, it beats me over the head until it's on paper lol.
What are your favourite types of fanworks, when you're not creating? I love everyone's art. I don't understand anything about tablets and brushes, I am just here nodding along like your supportive but clueless grandparent, but you are very talented and I like seeing all your stuff.
What do you like in particular about this fandom?   I'm Matt/Frank trash! I wanted to write fic for them back when DD S2 aired and never ended up finishing anything, and then during corn teen last year my brain went, "hey, remember that Matt/Frank fic you couldn't finish five years ago? I know what to do with it now and you can't write anything else until it's finished." I like that this fandom is still active, and even though the show has ended, there are still DECADES of comics and more coming out. Also, it's fairly small and everyone seems chill.
Do you like participating in fan events? Sometimes, although I get anxious about it! I've been trying to participate in more.
What about your creating process?   I prefer writing at the kitchen table, but if the TV is on in the living room I retreat into my bedroom and write in bed because it gets too noisy in that part of the house. I need either quiet or rain noises. I'm a morning person and would rather write earlier in the day, but usually only have time after I get home from work. If I'm stuck I will usually read some poetry because it helps u get weird with words. I kind of think about stylistic writing (as opposed to where you're going with plot or character) like the forms I learned in karate. They're all made up of the same basic movements because there's only so many your body can do, but it teaches you to move in different ways. And there's only so many words in a given language that you can use repeatedly in writing, but the way you arrange them makes a difference. So, given that poetry is pretty much all stylistic (with some exceptions, I know) that helps me think about different word combinations to make it not sound as weird. Sometimes I DO end up covered in cats because they like to be warm.
Do you interact a lot with other fans? There are a couple of active discords I'm in, which is nice because I find it hard to interact on tumblr and haven't really had that level of interaction since I moved over from LJ over ten years ago . . . the years start coming and they don't stop coming, just like the song says. Anyway, yes, come talk to me!
Is there any particular piece you'd like to showcase for this post?  https://archiveofourown.org/works/28433379 "a fistful of time" - because I had fun writing all the different POVs.
Do you have other fandoms you'd like to talk about?   I've not really been active in fandom in years. I do have a Terminator fic (of all things lol) up on my AO3, and before that, I tried writing something for Black Sails that I never finished, and I was active in Supernatural years ago, and in various anime/manga fandoms back in high school, aka the dark ages. Based on that, I guess I'm all over the place.
Is there anything else you want to tell us about yourself? Besides for writing, I like cuddling my cats and going on hikes while listening to spec fic podcasts, the weirder, the better. Where can your fanworks be found? AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/users/roipecheur I also post links to tumblr when I finish something: https://roipecheur.tumblr.com/ , tag wrote stuff !
Thank you, @roipecheur !

18, 20, 24, 29, 38, 44, 50 ( about Danny, Veryn and Kezaat)
ooh yay, my dearest children!
read more because i wrote a lot about them lol
What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else
Danny: he’s all about sci-fi and spec fic for books, tv, and movies; for video games he’s a sucker for shooters, but only if they have like, a decent amount of story; music-wise, he and i have similar tastes, he can listen to almost anything but prefers pop punk and alt rock
Veryn: she’s not much of a reader, not because she doesn’t like it, she just can’t concentrate, but for tv and movies she likes high fantasy; she exclusively plays rpgs, typically story-based, but she’ll do a shooter from time to time; with music her favorite thing to listen to is old electronica from a specific region on her planet that i haven’t named yet lol
Kezaat: he reads a lot, usually mysteries and crime noir novels, but he’ll read some romance/erotica from time to time; he’s not much for watching tv or movies, but when he does it’s more crime dramas; he’s not super into video games, but whenever Veryn needs another player for something he’ll join in cause why not lol; he likes older music, like his culture’s equivalent of classic jazz, but Danny has introduced him to this stuff called “disco” and he’s starting to like that too
Do they like musicals? Music in general? What do they do when they’re favourite song comes?
Danny: he’s indifferent to most musicals, but he did have a Phantom of the Opera phase for like 6 months in middle school; music in general, he loves. he actually plays guitar (i always forget because it never comes up lol), and he’s a mediocre pianist; he will absolutely dance to his favorite song, which changes periodically but it is always dance-able, and if any of his friends are with him he’ll lip sync at them (he’s really into performing for someone who isn’t into theatre lol)
Veryn: musicals aren’t really her thing, she likes to daydream to music, and that’s kind of hard to do with show tunes (at least the ones she’s heard); her music is very important to her, since she often uses it to drown out excessive noise, and it helps her concentrate with her writing; she isn’t much of a dancer, and most of her favorite songs have no lyrics, but she’ll like, tap her fingers to the beat and other subtle things like that
Kezaat: he legit doesn’t know what a musical is, no one he knows likes them enough to talk about them lol; he likes his music though, it fills the time, and when he’s working (he’s an escort) it often helps set the mood lol; his favorite songs also don’t have lyrics, but he’ll dance (more so when he’s alone)
What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?
Danny: hoo boy, well, Danny usually gets around 8 hours, which is good, but that 8 hours is like, 3-11 in the morning. he likes a pretty firm mattress, but lots of pillows and blankets. he likes to burrow. also one other thing: if you sleep next to him, you will get kicked and/or elbowed multiple times
Veryn: it’s not so much of a pattern as a uhhh… i mean, she sleeps sometimes lol, for anywhere from 4 to 12 hours, on a soft mattress with one pillow for her head and another to cuddle
Kezaat: by far he has the healthiest sleep schedule, 8 to 10 hours a night, always around the same time. and he likes memory foam mattresses
What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very over protective?
Danny: if it’s very weird and specific (ex: my fear of being eaten alive by a giant beast lol) he might tease them, but he’s usually very understanding. with their permission he would even try to help them overcome that fear if possible
Veryn: she doesn’t tease anyone about fears. period. she has many fears, a lot of them irrational. she understands that people can be afraid of literally anything, and no matter how nonthreatening something is, if a person is afraid of it, they have a reason
Kezaat: he’s pretty similar to Veryn here, he also doesn’t tease people about fears, he likes to make people feel comfortable, and teasing them about something they’re scared of doesn’t help do that
What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had?
Danny: he really admires confidence, because despite how he acts, he’s constantly second-guessing himself. as for talents, i mean, it’s not much of a talent, but he wishes he had better handwriting, because his is really bad and he knows it
Veryn: she admires other peoples’ ability to be sociable and outgoing, since she’s so shy herself, and she wishes she could learn how to carry on a conversation more easily, instead of relying on the other person to come up with something to say
Kezaat: he admires kindness, he grew up in a rough situation, and he deals with a lot of mean and unpleasant people, so seeing someone just be nice for no reason is so refreshing. and for any talents? um, i don’t know, i think he’d like to continue improving on the talents he already has
What is their favourite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most?
Danny: his favorite is fall, specifically the beginning of fall, when it’s still kind of warm, and he likes sunshine. he’s better when it warmer, but he’s pretty adaptable. unless it’s overly humid, in which case he will not shut up about how disgusting he feels lol
Veryn: she’s a winter girl, and she likes overcast and snowy weather. she’s best in the cold. unsurprisingly, she complains most about heat (or anything over 60 degrees lol)
Kezaat: he likes summer, and he likes it to be warm and humid, he’s also partial to rain. he’s cold-blooded, so he’s way better in the heat, and he complains most about cold, but dry heat is also a pain for him
If they could only take one bag of stuff somewhere with them: what would they pack? What do they consider their essentials?
Danny: his top priority would be having something to keep him entertained, or at least keep him busy, so like a rubiks cube comes to mind? maybe a fidget spinner lol. in all seriousness he might bring a couple books or graphic novels. he’d also want to have some way to communicate with people, so his phone. he’d bring his guitar too, that’s something else to do.
Veryn: everything, absolutely everything is in her laptop, music, things to do, ways to contact people… her priorities are basically the same as Danny’s, because like him, she gets bored very easily. she’d also bring food because she’s reasonable
Kezaat: some way to listen to music, something to draw in/on, maybe an object of the uhhh nsfw variety because like… idk that’s something to do and it’s something he would do and self love is important and blah blah you know, and he might throw in a book

so, as of today, I’ve gotten all of my mock results back, and I’m actually pretty ok with them! except for a few, but I can always work on those.
I think I’ll quickly type up how I’m doing so far, just to clear my mind & see what areas I have to work on. and maybe use this post as a ‘kick your arse into gear, you only have 13 weeks left’ motivation of sorts.
maths (edexcel): absolutely horrid paper lmao. left people in tears. but hey, the grade boundaries were low, so that was nice! I just tend to panic in maths exams. need to work on that.
english lit (edexcel): this was good! we only did the LOTF section (because we can’t cut out much term time), so it was pretty nice. LOTF is my favourite section, I think.
english language (edexcel): went much better than I thought it would! we only did the fiction paper - maybe that’s why :’) for the writing section, I  just wrote a full blown fic about @kokoscrazyblog, because her name was literally the first one that popped up in my head.
meaning that, three-quarters of the way through the exam, the invigilator closest to me started to stare at me weirdly. because I was shaking with laughter, into my exam paper.
(I was waxing poetry about one of my closest friends to get some similes in, and it deadass sounded like something from Wordsworth)
physics (aqa): i was. 2 marks. away from the next grade.
biology (aqa): 2. marks.
chemistry (aqa): 2.
history (edexcel): absolutely great! pretty glad I scribbled ‘INF 1987!!’ in the last minute. and, hey! it looked like my bullshit about vagabondage and sheep farming paid off!
german (edexcel): listening was absolute shit, lmfao. speaking and writing went much better than I thought it would! reading was in the middle.
classics (ocr): THANK GOD FOR CLASSICS. I’LL SAY IT AS MANY TIMES AS IT TAKES. THANK YOU, JUPITER, FOR YOUR COUNTLESS AFFAIRS, SPAWNING SO MANY MEMORABLE STORIES. (and also the fact that it’s old spec ahahaha)
food prep & nut (ocr): a chill disaster. chill because it’s food tech. a disaster because a) did not revise for the thing - I was completely burnt out - and b) every topic apart from the ones we were taught came up. lovely! we still did a lot better than we thought we would, though :’)

G.W. Renshaw –Speculative Fiction Author
This month’s guest is G.W. Renshaw who writes speculative fiction. His work is seen in The Chandler Affairs series: “The Stable Vices Affair“, “The Prince and Puppet Affair“, and “The Kalevala Affair“. He has a wide background of being a TV writer, gunner in the Canadian Forces, forest ranger, a computer programmer, among many more.
G.W. Renshaw lives in Calgary with his lovey wife. Let’s welcome him to the blog!
G.W. Renshaw, introduce yourself to us.
Hi, Konn. Thanks for having me here. I’ve done a lot of things in my life, some of which weren’t my fault.
I was born in Toronto, did a stint in The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, was a forest ranger for a summer, moved to Calgary, went to university (once for computer science, once for psychology), and spent a long time as a computer programmer. I’ve also been a teacher, which I loved, and worked in two biochemistry research labs. After that I became an actor, because why not? That led me to being a writer, science, and military consultant for a TV show that never got made. I’ve also taught medical students how to do pelvic exams, but that’s another story. Oh yes, and my lovely wife and I are also critical incident stress counsellors.
As far as non-job things go, I’ve been ice climbing, rock climbing, caving, spent over a decade in Search and Rescue (above and below ground). Driven in car rallyes. Taught wilderness survival. Learned man tracking from Terry Grant. Spent fifteen years or so in the SCA doing medieval things including archery, woodworking and blacksmithing.
And, of course, I write.
Tell us about your Chandler Affairs series.
It’s about a woman named Veronica Irene Chandler. Despite her mother being a Calgary homicide detective, Veronica is determined to be a private investigator. Her cases, however, turn out to be weirder than she could have imagined. The mysteries are more along the lines of “what’s happening” rather than “who done it.” Something like the Dresden Files if Harry Dresden was a complete Muggle.
In Veronica’s words, “It’s frustrating. Ancient and magical beings of great power keep interfering in my cases. Depending, of course, on exactly what you mean by ancient, magical, power, and interfering. Against this vast array of cosmic forces I have my own magic. I can tie a knot in a piece of string.”
Also, she’s been trained by her father as a chef, so expect good food in the books.
Currently there are three, do you plan to write a fourth?
I’m way ahead of you. Number four, The True Love Affair, is in the hands of the editors and will be out Real Soon Now. After that will be number five, currently untitled, the rest of the series, and The Private Investigator’s Cooking Course.
I’ve written the final chapters so I do know where the series is going. It’s all outlined but I’m not sure how many books it will take to tell the story.
Nice! Do you have a preferred genre to write in? Or possibly one you do not like?
Much to my mother’s horror, I’ve always majored in science fiction with a strong minor in fantasy. She wanted me to read “real” books, but when I was a wee lad I was mostly into Tom Swift, the Hardy Boys, and Robert Heinlein.
Apart from The Chandler Affairs, I also have a short story collection called Odd Thoughts. The stories in that are definitely on the creepy, bordering on the horror, side of things.
An editor once asked me what genre The Chandler Affairs belongs to, and my answer was mystery/urban fantasy/women’s/New Adult/science fiction/paranormal.
I’ll probably never write a Western or a Regency Romance simply because I don’t connect with those cultures.
What was the first literary piece that you wrote?
The first piece I wrote with the intention of it going somewhere was an SF short story called Vacation in 2012. I entered it in a contest and won second place, then sold it to On Spec Magazine a few months later. The Chandler Affairs followed right after that.
When did you first decide to pursue writing?
The first story I remember writing was almost 50 years ago when I was in grade seven. These days it would be called fan-fic and was titled The Vulcan’s Triumph. I’ll let people guess which fandom. It was written by hand because I didn’t have a typewriter and it was awful. I think I still have it around somewhere…
For many years I did some writing but I was too busy with other things. In 2012, I decided to get serious and start writing things that would be published.
With your vast background, how would you say these experiences have helped your writing?
To quote from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: In every way.
I’ve met a lot of people would like to believe that writing fiction means that they can just make everything up. That’s not true. Even if your story is based in a world completely unlike ours, the characters will still have to have recognizable motives and actions. If they don’t, you are either the best writer the world has ever known or nobody will read your work.
The more you know about how this world works, and how people work, the more believable your stories will be. Apart from my personal experiences, I also to do a lot of research for my stories. A good example is police procedure. Almost everything we as Canadians think we know about the legal system is actually American stuff from TV. I don’t want a Canadian police officer to throw my book across the room because I’ve said something wrong.
What will be your next project?
I’m not certain. I have a pile of ideas filed away. There’s a hard SF novel about my favourite planet outlined, so that’s a top contender. There’s also a YA based on the early 1900s-era Hardy Boys/Doc Savage types of adventures, but set in modern times and with, of course, plot twists from the original testosterone-fest.
Thank you for joining us G.W. Renshaw to talk about your writing!
