Weird as hell to start off a blog like this but hi, i'm NukaNobody, i like making head canons, i'm fixated on fallout 4 atm, so here's my head canons on the hygiene of fallout 4 companions.
Why did I do this? I got in a debate w some people and realized that the sole survivor would immediately perish if they got defrosted to only go to the commonwealth where it's been 200 years of radiation, dead bodies with rot everywhere and the lack of access to good water would mean it would be stank as hell.
read more for explanations, send an ask for anything
Danse
Brotherhood probably has a rule about hygiene considering they want to look good and close quarters.
After his banishment he doesn't need to shower because he's a synth, but occasionally does it as a comfort to remind himself of the time he was human.
Probably smells like gunpowder, Copper and Cedar.
Piper
Likes to take care of herself.
Will sometimes splurge on handcrafted soap made from brahmin fat or perfume made from flowers.
Smells of ink and sweets
Deacon
Can't be sneaky when you're stinky
Scent probably changes a lot due to disguises, but there's always an undertone of citrus/lemon
Curie
Is a robot, a one in good condition at that. Probably smells like, febreze or fake flowers and chemicals, the type to give you a headache.
Nick Valentine
Learnt how to maintain himself so he somewhat good condition,
Likes to keep clean to make himself more approachable for someone who is obviously a synth.
Smells of Cigarettes and expired pre-war cologne.
Codsworth
Neglected his condition out of concern for his family, never really cared for himself so he's pretty banged up and rusty.
Smells of Rust (duh) and motor oil (duh), with a hint of baby powder.
x6-88
I haven't gotten too far in game yet (only 2 days on my save) but since he's a synth that's still apart of the institute, smells like new metal/plastic (there's a smell from it i swear) and rubber. So he's like a new car.
Hancock
Are you surprised. I love the guy and romance'd him but he would not smell good at all.
More focused on good neighbor than showering, doesn't really see the use of wasting water but does out of respect for other people's noses.
He'd probably smell absolutely horrendous, rotten radiated flesh, smell of old pages, chems and dust. Imagine going through your grandma's attic where she accidentally left thanksgiving turkey leftovers in there for the past 2 weeks. Yeah that's what he smells like.
Preston
Used to shower more before the quincy massacre but became too overwhelmed afterwards and concerned about resources being wasted where it could do good in settlements.
Eventually does begin to shower 1-2 a week when he feels secure with settlement procedures
Smells slightly of burning (laser) ash and foliage.
MacCready
On the open road a lot and more focused on acquiring caps, only showers and takes care of himself when the people he's killing can smell him from miles away.
One of his biggest insecurities, will start fights if you even say he might smell bad even if he does.
Smells like rubble, gunpowder and oddly enough eggs.
Strong
The most he's showered is like, wandering into a lake every few months, if that's even considered.
I'm not even gonna attempt to describe how rank he'd be
Cait
Does not care if she smells at all, more focused on survival, understandable.
Will MAYBE shower if she gets too uncomfortable with how much grime and sweat she'd accumulate, but even then it's like, 13 seconds long.
After going clean, might shower a bit more because she doesn't spend her only caps on chems or alcohol.
Smells of sweat, iron, and gin. After going clean she'd still smell of sweat and iron, with a hint of peppermint.

Touch-starved Ricardo! 'You're legally obligated to keep holding me.' And 'I haven't been hugged in years.'
Oooh. I like this. Probably not what you were thinking, but it's what came to mind. Thank you muchly. ~ ~ ~ Rating: PG-13 Pairing: DDA Evelyn Price x DDA Ricardo Morales Summary: A witness interview doesn't go well. Length: Drabble Approx. Reading Time - 3 minutes (200 words/minute)
Tumblr media
Ricardo can see the tension building in his co-lead. It's there in the set of her shoulders, but most especially in the way her hands are clenched against her thighs beneath the table. He's been watching it grow for the past hour, winding tighter like the click-click-click of a ratchet with every snide remark and scathing insult recorded into the deposition from their witness. Well, the defense's witness.
He'd been sure she would say something. He hadn't chosen to work with her for her meekness of spirit, after all, but she'd kept her tongue thus far. She was too professional to make a scene that could affect her career. Which meant he would have to address it.
"Alright, Ms. Grace. I think we'll take a break here," he announces, scribbling his last notes onto the page and closing the file. "Would you like anything? A drink or something to eat?"
Again proving herself the negation of her name, the young woman derides him for wasting yet more of her time. He takes it to mean she's fine as she is. When they leave the room, closing the door on the witness, he cups Evelyn's elbow and steers her towards his office. She doesn't resist, doesn't even act surprised.
The moment he gets the door shut behind them, she darts forward. It takes him by surprise and he nearly stumbles as her arms close around his waist. Hesitant, he lowers his hands to her shoulders.
"You're legally obligated to keep holding me," she informs him before he can say a word.
It provokes a laugh and the tension bleeds away. He looks fondly down at the top of her dark hair. "Why is that?"
"If you don't, I might just kill that horrible woman."
"That's a bold thing to say to a deputy D.A.," he observes, but holds her just a little tighter nonetheless. A beat passes, then two, and he can feel his heart rate dropping to restful, lethargic levels. "I haven't been hugged in years," he remarks quietly.
"That's a shame, because you're very nice to hug," Evelyn responds. Her arms relax, sinking around his hips. In turn, he shifts his arms lower on her back, holding her a little closer. "That's better," she sighs. "You're good at this."
He can't quell the smile that lifts the corners of his lips. "Gracias."
"De nada." She turns her head, hiding her face against his tie and mumbling something he can't make out.
Her breath warms his skin beneath his shirts. "I didn't catch that."
"This isn't very becoming of me, is it?" she asks a little louder from the same position.
He doesn't even need to think about it. "We all have something that gets under our skin. I'm not sure why this woman has gotten under yours, but I'm actually quite proud of how you handled yourself in that room. I, on the other hand, have a reputation for my temper."
"It is a hell of a temper," she agrees and he can feel her smile against him before she starts to pull away.
"Ah." He resists just a little, letting her feel his reluctance to let go. "Maybe just another few minutes?"
"Thank you."
She leans in again, shuffling further into his personal space, and he sighs as he curls his hands around her much smaller frame. It's fine if she thinks he's doing it for her. She doesn't need to know he's the one who yearns for the comfort of being held.

Alright, so today’s the three-year anniversary of Reputation a.k.a the greatest album of all time, my baby, the light of my life, the album that deserved a Grammy (trying desperately not to think about the scene from Miss Americana😭), the album that introduced us to the most beautiful couple ever, the album that shut Kimye up, and I better stop now, or else I’m not gonna shut up.
So in honour of this momentous occasion (and the fact that I reached 200+ followers! Thank you so much you guys!🥺 Love you all 3000💙), here’s a loooooong post on why Reputation is the Ethan and MC album.
1. ...Ready For It?
No one has to know
Throwback to MC saying the exact same words back in Miami.
In the middle of the night, in my dreams
You should see the things we do, baby, mmm
In the middle of the night, in my dreams
I know I'm gonna be with you
So I take my time
Remember back when MC asked for Ethan to get into bed right away during their first time? Ethan told them that he had dreamt about the moment for months, so he wasn’t going to rush it.
2. End Game
Big reputation, big reputation
Ooh you and me would be a big conversation
These two dating would be the talk of the hospital, and they know it.
Even when we'd argue, we don't do it for long
And you understand the good and bad, end up in the song
For all your beautiful traits, and the way you do it with ease
For all my flaws, paranoia, and insecurities
Think these lines are pretty self-explanatory😌
I hit you like bang
We tried to forget it, but we just couldn't
*gets war flashbacks of the ‘reset’ phase*😭 They tried to make it work, but we all know how Ch 8 of book 2 went😌
I swear I don't love the drama, it loves me
Perfect for our chaotic MC😌
3. Don’t Blame Me
Do I... really have to explain this one?
For you, I would cross the line
I would waste my time
I would lose my mind
They say she's gone too far this time
Do we need a recap of our rule-breaking MC?
And baby, for you, I would fall from grace
Just to touch your face
If you walk away
I'd beg you on my knees to stay
He was willing to risk his (mostly) rule-abiding reputation for being with MC. And there’s no way he wouldn’t beg for MC not to leave him if he ever screwed up🤷‍♀️
4. Delicate
This ain't for the best
My reputation's never been worse, so
You must like me for me
Ethan stood by MC’s side throughout the Ethics hearing, when her reputation was completely smeared, and people only saw her as a patient murderer. He didn’t know about the sabotages, but he would’ve definitely supported her if he had known.
We can't make
Any promises now, can we, babe?
Commitment-phobia🙃
Sometimes I wonder when you sleep
Are you ever dreaming of me?
Sometimes when I look into your eyes
I pretend you're mine, all the damn time
They spent so much of time apart, not able to be with each other, so the least they could do was dream of being with each other all the time.
5. So It Goes (an underrated af bop)
What can I say... it’s a sex song, okay? Don’t make me go into the details😂 Just listen to the lyrics, and all will be clear.
6. Gorgeous (Tumblr won’t let me put any more links)
MC’s eternal anthem to Ethan.
Whisky on ice, Sunset and Vine
You've ruined my life, by not being mine
We all know Ethan loves Whiskey, and the second line? C’mon!
You're so gorgeous
I can't say anything to your face
'Cause look at your face
And I'm so furious
At you for making me feel this way
But, what can I say?
You're gorgeous
Ethan Ramsey is famous for two reasons. One: his smart brain, I guess😒 Two: HIS LOOKS!!! HE’S GORGEOUS, AND DON’T DENY IT.
And you should think about the consequence
Of you touching my hand in the darkened room (dark room, dark room)
Ah, the olden days of hand holding in the diagnostics office🥺
Ocean blue eyes looking in mine
I feel like I might sink and drown and die
No explanation required.
You make me so happy, it turns back to sad, yeah
There's nothing I hate more than what I can't have
You are so gorgeous it makes me so mad
The wonderful will-they-won’t-they saga. The frustrating hot-and-cold behaviour. The ‘We can’t’, ‘It’s unethical’ and ‘It’s complicated’. MC deserves an award for her patience😓
7. King Of My Heart
I'm perfectly fine, I live on my own
I made up on my mind, I'm better off bein' alone
Ethan ‘I don’t believe in soulmates and nobody’s waiting at home’ Ramsey.
And all at once, you are the one I have been waiting for
King of my heart, body and soul, ooh whoa
And all at once, you are all I want, I'll never let you go
King of my heart, body and soul, ooh whoa
This could be from both Ethan and MC’s perspectives. The love they share isn’t something that you get easily. It’s something that MC has waited for her whole life, and something Ethan never knew he needed, but now can’t live without🥺
Late in the night, the city's asleep
Your love is a secret I'm hoping, dreaming, dying to keep
Change my priorities
The taste of your lips is my idea of luxury
This was definitely Ethan throughout book 2, after he finally gave in. He let go of his previous rules and regulations, especially during the time of the attack. He was clearly affected, and once MC was alright, his main priority was her, and her alone.
Is the end of all the endings?
My broken bones are mending
With all these nights we're spending
Ethan’s been burnt a lot in the past. But all those wounds are now healing thanks to MC.
Up on the roof with a school girl crush
Drinking beer out of plastic cups
They act like lovesick teenagers around each other, like, that’s literally their description if you choose to kiss Ethan for the first time in Chapter 14 of book 2!😅
Say you fancy me, not fancy stuff
Baby, all at once, this is enough
We all know about his initial fear of his mother reaching out to him for the sake of his money. To him, MC not talking advantage of him is a pretty big deal, even though it’s never mentioned. You just know, you know?🥺
8. Dancing With Our Hands Tied
My, my love had been frozen
Deep blue, but you painted me golden
Again, Ethan doesn’t have the best experience with love. But MC changed that.
I'm a mess, but I'm the mess that you wanted
This could go both ways, cause they’re both piping hot messes😬 (but love each other anyway🥺)
The rest of this song could have made so much more sense for them if we had gotten some sort of a secret relationship storyline. But oh well, I’m definitely not complaining about the gala😌 (and definitely not believing any of the supposed cancelled storylines)
9. Dress
Our secret moments
In a crowded room
They got no idea
About me and you
I mean... pretty obvious😌
Even in my worst times, you could see the best of me
And I woke up just in time
Now I wake up by your side
My one and only, my lifeline
This is practically Ethan’s train of thought, and you can’t convince me otherwise.
As for the rest of the steamier lyrics... I’ll um... let you guys listen to it yourselves😁
10. Call It What You Want
I wrote an entire fic inspired by this song, so excuse me for the shameless self-promo, but go give it a read?🥺👉👈(totally fine if you don’t! I’ve probably made so many posts about this song that y’all know the meaning anyway😅)
11. New Years Day
Don't read the last page
But I stay when you're lost and I'm scared and you're turning away
I want your midnights
But I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Day
MC has always stayed by Ethan’s side, even when he’s pushed her away. These lines perfectly explain how she wants his worst times, and his best, the midnights they spend staying up together, and the moments where it’s just the two of them, when everyone else has left, like the aftermath of a New Years party (still mad at the fact that we didn’t get to see the gang celebrate New Year together😭)
I'll be there if you're the toast of the town babe
Or if you strike out and you're crawling home
The above explanation for these lines as well.
Please don't ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognize anywhere
Becoming strangers to each other would be their worst nightmares. Knowing that the other was out there in the world somewhere, but not being in their lives would kill them.
You and me forevermore
These two are each other’s soulmate, they know it, even if they haven’t said it yet. Forever wouldn’t be enough for them to shower each other with they love they hold for each other. But it’s a good start.
——————————
If you guys made it this far, then I honestly love you more than words can ever express🥺💙 Thanks for putting up with my Swiftie-Directioner-Ethan stan ass, cause I dunno if I’d ever be able to handle someone like myself. And if you read all the above stuff, then I hope you wanna know why this album means so much to me.
Reputation is perceived as a dark album, when in reality it’s truly about finding love amongst all the noise. This album, and Taylor and Joe’s story, taught me what true love actually is, and Ethan and MC cemented that. This album and these two couples (quite literally) saved my life.
The most beautiful part about both these relationships is that even though they never showed it openly, for the sake of their relationships, both Ethan(in the story) and Joe stood by the side of the one’s they loved, despite half of the people who they knew hating on them, or betraying them. And I think that’s what’s truly important. Forming a true relationship like that, be it platonic or romantic, is long lasting, and I hope everyone finds those kind of people to fill their hearts with. Sending much love, and sorry for being a huge sap😅💙

There are a few articles out right now in big-name publications (including this one) about Dr. Anne Lembke's new book on dopamine and our collective tech-driven digital addiction. I haven't read the book yet (it's on my shortlist!), but the articles have highlighted a number of findings and arguments that resonate pretty deeply with my experience of the last 10-15 years of my own life. So I apparently wrote a goddamn *wall of text* about it. There are two big takeaways for me so far. First is the one that the linked article focuses on: the biological mechanisms that digital platforms exploit to make themselves addictive, and how that leads to 1) our needing to use them more and more to achieve the same effect over time, and 2) the resulting vacillation between fulfilling these addictions and the other side of the pendulum swing: the brain's natural move to balance things out coming to feel more and more like legitimate depression as we become increasingly acclimated to the idea that our every waking moment should be flavored with some dopamine blast from external stimuli. Despite my work in what was once called "new media studies" and is now usually called "digital humanities" (or perhaps because of it), I've always been a bit ambivalent about the idea that more technology, more complexity, is somehow inherently good for us. I got my first Facebook account because a colleague of mine created it for me while I was in the bathroom. I created my first Twitter account because it was required for a graduate seminar. For what it's worth, I've deleted both since. I try to maintain a good balance between being online and being in "the real world," as I still, geriatrically, call it. And yet, what Lembke writes about here resonates with me deeply, frighteningly. I can't concentrate on one thing for long stretches, a hallmark of most of my hobbies and my career for most of my life, like I could ten years ago. Writing a long-form post like this takes intentional concentration, when fifteen years ago, I wrote something of this length mostly every night, before going to bed, to help me process the day (yes, on my *blog*, in case the young'uns were wondering). Just sitting and reading more than ten pages of a book at a time is hard for me. A decade ago I might have read 200 pages of an engrossing novel in a sitting without noticing the time even passing. It's all because I constantly feel like I might be missing something. *Of course* I'm missing something. But nowadays, I have this brain worm that says I should be able to see/hear/listen to it all, and to not do so is not just to be left out, but to waste whatever time I have left on Earth by not doing and learning Important Things. So, this spring and summer, I've been trying to (mostly) quit. It hasn't gone very well. It feels remarkably like quitting smoking did, way back when. A realization that makes me want to quit more, but also makes it harder to do so. When I'm not constantly stimulated, the depression tends to kick in, fed further, of course, by all of the "real life" things that have happened over the last year-and-change. It gets better the longer I work at it, but it's still tough. Unless I'm in the woods, in which case it's super-easy, but that's a subject for another lengthy post or ten. Anyway, this is all to say that Lembke's claims about technology's contribution to our collective mental unhealth really struck a chord with me. I mean, I know spending all day plugged into the internet isn't good, but I hadn't really explicitly connected it to my own mental struggles, I don't think, until today. Maybe that'll help me change something. New information, especially when it isn't wrapped in a candy-coated dopamine shell, often helps me do that. If I can focus long enough to read the book, anyway... Lembke's other point, which I'll only briefly touch on here because I've already rambled for a lot longer than I planned to, is something that was a little more familiar to me than the dopamine-withdrawl/depression connection: the idea that digital tech is stealing
our ability to concentrate in long-form ways and to learn and connect deeply. You can read more about her take here, if you're interested: https://www.theguardian.com/global/2021/aug/22/how-digital-media-turned-us-all-into-dopamine-addicts-and-what-we-can-do-to-break-the-cycle I'd say, based on my own experience and my experiences with my students, they don't only harm our ability to do these things, they (maybe more importantly) harm our ability to *want* to be able to do these things, or to believe that they're important things to be able to do. I feel like the worst of the "Get off my lawn!"-ers writing this, but I also believe it's true: we *need* the experiential benefits that come from immersing ourselves in the pace and scale of the real world, which are so much slower and smaller than the hyperreality the internet promises us. Not to cross my wires too much here, but we come from the natural world, not the industrialized world, and we act in ways that are better adapted to our environment, better *for us*, when we have that "real world" as an influence. The more that influence is supplanted by dopamine-producing machines of our own making, the less we resonate with the world around us, to our own peril (and, in ways that are becoming more and more obvious, the peril of the rest of life on the planet). But that's a whole other topic for another day, as well... We are meant to live and function locally, at scale, and though there are *absolutely* some fantastic things that digital technology has made possible, our brains simply can't process having 2,000 Facebook friends (for example) in a meaningful way. It's no wonder to me that we are the most "connected" (that word's a bit fraught here) that we've ever been in human history, but also as lonely and alone as people have ever been since we've been tracking such things. Deep connections with others and deep learning are necessary for us to be able to form functional, lasting, and intelligent communities, whether those form in our local, physical space, online, or some hybrid of both. But most of the platforms we rely on these days don't care about those things, they care about ad revenue. I don't have some big conclusion here (I'll leave that to Dr. Lembke), I guess I just wanted to process some of this by writing it out. In the old days, I'd post it online and then have some discussion about it with others who read my post and commented, and it would at least feel a bit like having others in the room and discussing, debating, and learning together. In 2021, I'll post it on Facebook and Tumblr, and maybe get a few likes, or hearts, and we'll all move on to the next bit of content. And to be clear, that's not a dismissal or criticism of anyone who follows me on those platforms, but an illustration of Lembke's point: why read some rando's long screed about nothing when there are so many other things to look at that make you feel better, faster? Why write a long comment when your afternoon could be better spent seeking out something less fraught, and less time-consuming? I get it. I do it, too. But I'd like to not.
