Please don’t use midjourney it steals art from pretty much every artist out there without any compensation. I didn’t know this at first and tried it but then during the creation process i saw water marks and Getty image logos (though I’m sure they’ve hidden that now) so it’s definitely stealing.

No, it isn't. And you've taken the wrong lesson from the Getty watermark issue.

AI training on public facing, published work is fair use. Any published piece could be located, examined, and learned from by a human artist. This does not require the permission of the owner of said work. A mechanical apparatus does not change this principle.

All we, as artists, own, are specific expressions. We do not own styles, ideas, concepts, plots, or tropes. We do not even own the work we create in a proper sense. All our work flows from the commons, and all of it flows back to it. IP is a limited patent on specific expressions, and what constitutes infringement is the end result of the creative process. What goes into it is irrelevant, and upending that process to put inspiration and reference as infringement is the end of art as we know it.

The Getty watermark issue is an example of overfitting, wherein a repetitive element in the dataset over-emphasizes specific features to the point of disrupting the system's attempts at the creation of novel images.

No one denies that the SD dataset is trained on images Getty claims to own, but Getty has so polluted the image search functions of the internet with their watermarked images that the idea of a getty watermark has been picked up the same way the AI might pick up the idea of an eye or a tree branch. It is a systemic failure that Shutterstock and Getty can be so monopolistic and ubiquitous that a dateset trained on literally everything public facing on the internet would be polluted with their watermarks.

Watermarks that, by the way, they add to public domain images, and that google prioritizes over clean versions.

The lawsuits being brought against Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are copyright overreach being presented as a theft tissue. The facts of the matter are not as the litigants state. The images aren't stored, the SD weights are a 4 gig file trained on 250 terabytes, roughly 4 bytes per image. It runs local, does not reach out to image sources over IP. All you've got are mathematical patterns and ratios. I would go so far as to say that the class action suit is based on outright lies.

But for a moment, let's entertain the idea that what goes into a work, as inspiration, can be copyrighted. That styles can be stolen. That what goes in defines infringement, rather than what comes out. What happens then?

Well, the bad news is that if Stable Diffusion and Midjourney were shut down tomorrow, Stable Diffusion is in the wild. It runs local, it's user-trainable. In short, the genie isn't going back in the bottle. Plus, the way diffusion AI works, there's no way to trace a gen to its sources. The weights don't work like that. The indexing would be larger than the entire set of stored patterns.

Well good news, there's an AI for that. The current version is called CLIP Interrogator And it works on everything. Not just AI generated, but any image. It can find what style it closely matches, reverse engineer a prompt. It's crude now, but it will improve.

Now, you've already established that using the same patterns as another work is infringement. You've already established that inspiration is theft. And now there's a robot that tells lawyers who you draw like.

Sure, you can fight it in court. If it goes go to court. But who's to say they won't just staplegun that AI to a monetization re-direction bot like youtube has going with their content ID? Awesome T-shirt design you uploaded to your print-on-demand shop... too bad your art style resembles that from a cartoon from 1973 that Universal got as part of an acquisition and they've claimed all your cash. Sure you can file a DMCA counter-notice, but we all know how that goes.

And then there's this fantasy that upending the system would help artists. But who would "own" that style? Is that piece stealing the style of Stephen Silver, or Disney's Kim Possible(TM)? When you work for Disney their contracts say everything you make is theirs. Every doodle. Every drawing. If the styles are copyrightable, a company could hire an artist straight out of school, publish their work under work-for-hire, fire them, and then go after them for "stealing" the style they developed while working for said corp.

Not to mention that a handful of companies own so much media that it is going to be impossible to find an artist that hasn't been influenced by something under their control.

Oh, and that stock of source images that companies like Disney and Universal have? These kinds of lawsuits won't stop them from building AIs with that material that they "own". The power goes into corp hands, they can down staff to their heart's content and everyone else is denied the ability to compete with them. Worst of all possible worlds.

Be careful what wishes you make when holding the copyright monkey's paw.

Ah the miracle of making character references and then not using them at all... Literally what is wrong with me why did I do that? 

I was playing with a brush and line-art style and ended up just drawing a bunch of flower husbands based off some pose references I found on Pinterest. There’s technically a 6th one but I got too embarrassed to post it lol.

so this seems very weird, especially because there is no source provided. but I've still been recovering from a cold, so I had some time on my hands and searched with Google's reverse image search feature what the source of this weird ass graphic could be

I clicked through several posts that all gave 0 sources, until I finally found a lonesome twitter account that linked an instagram account

deep in the comments of that instagram post, I was finally able to find a source! the graphic was based on this other graphic:

so this person marked the different states based on their own criteria:

for example, a state gets marked as high-risk if you can't change your birth certificate, and you're forced to out yourself when you have to show your birth certificate. and I am not from the United States, but according to what I found, you only have to show your birth certificate at occasions like getting a social security card or getting your citizenship. so like maybe five times in your life?

another point of contention for Erin was states banning "80 percent" of care. that made me take notice, because I believe that every adult should be able to do with their bodies what they want and part of that can be medical transition. You know her

This little ape is pretty iconic on tumblr, having a niche popularity as a meme from the "and me" post that is around ten years old! That's a long time for this mysterious (and cute) face to circulate.

I get a decent amount of people both in real life and online asking me about her, which makes sense because as a big advocate for primate welfare I can tell you the golden rule is primates are not pets and should not be kept in domestic human contexts. People attuned to the inherent cruelty of keeping primates as pets and raising apes like human children are wary of images like this, because that is exactly what it looks like.

Good news! This baby (as with all babies with Silver Tree Nursery watermarks) is completely fine. Because she's a doll.

Many people know about reborn dolls-- The hyper-realistic baby dolls that look and feel like the real thing-- but not everyone knows that there are also ape reborn dolls. Silver Tree Nursery is a (now defunct) Facebook page for an artist named Gemma who painted and customized reborn dolls and specialized in apes. The artist behind this doll has done several orangutans as well as some gorillas and chimps. While the iconic "and me" model above is a little too cutesy to be perfectly realistic, some of her work is so realistic that it would fool me (if not for the handy watermark). I'm not the first person to post this-- while searching for more pictures I found this tumblr post which seems to have been the big reveal for most people that these are dolls. However, I thought I would tackle 2 follow up questions:

Are these dolls ethical?

Well, yeah. Some might ask if these dolls encourage the idea that this is an acceptable way to treat primates, but personally I think that the very small community of primate doll enthusiasts is a non-issue especially when you consider the impact of social media accounts that promote actual primates being kept as pets and treated like babies. Frankly if you want to snuggle a baby ape this would be the only way to do it (short of working as a surrogate caretaker for orphaned wildlife) without seriously contravening the endangered species act. Still, being vigilant against primate exploitation content is important, so:

How can you tell the difference between super realistic dolls and real primates?

In this case it was as easy as following the watermark. Googling Silver Tree Nursery brings up the Facebook page of the artist who makes the dolls. In general, sourcing is everything. If you know where an image comes from you can determine what the larger context is and whether what is happening is good. Here's an example:

Is this a reborn doll or a real baby? The framing makes it look very similar to the Silver Tree dolls with the stuffed animal and baby blanket, but if you were to reverse Google image search the picture you would find out that this is Yakini, a gorilla from the Werribee Zoo when he was a baby in 1999. Reverse searching is your friend, and it only takes a minute.

As somebody who frequently uses reverse image search to credit artists and creators or fact check things, I want to give a disclaimer to people who also do this and find themselves suddenly with 0 results on google reverse image search:

The Bing reverse image search works better these days. Currently the order in which I go is: Google, TinEye, Bing. If Google fails, often TinEye will provide, but sometimes even they got nothing, which is when Bing usually tends to lead me to the source. Sometimes through some extra steps (like finding a pinterest pin that then has the link to the source in it or something like that) but overall, tldr:

If the Google reverse image search gives you 0 results, try Bing

New game: Drop Google Chrome's market share 2023.

Why? Monopolies are bad and that's what's gonna happen if things don't even out a bit.

Why is it bad if Google has a monopoly? Because google already tracks the shit out of you, that's why. They collect and market your data. Yes, even in incognito mode. Just because your search history isn't being saved, doesn't mean google hasn't logged away where you've been or what you've searched for their own purposes. Imagine what more they'll do if the competition snuffs out?

"But I'll use an ad-blocker. I'm good." Not on Chrome you won't, because they're killing off ad-blockers in 2023, literally as soon as January- that's less than two months away. Gee... I wonder why they'd be doing that...

I recommend Firefox.

I switched a couple months ago and it's seriously so good.

It takes literal minutes to switch, you can import your bookmarks, passwords, browsing history, and even your open tabs from chrome to firefox.

Oh- and they don't collect and market your data.

And the extensions are amazing:

uBlock Origin blocks ads, trackers, coin miners, popups, etc. Hate those annoying ads before YouTube videos? I haven't had one since installing- and it literally never occurred to me for some reason that ad blockers would work on YouTube too. (It also got rid of the ads on tumblr, which I also didn't expect to happen)

There's Auto Tab Discard for people like me who always have a ton of tabs open. It puts your inactive tabs to sleep (but doesn't close them! important!) to help save memory and battery

Facebook Container keeps Facebook from tracking you around the web. (Includes Insta and Facebook messenger)

There's Image Search Options, for when you want to properly credit an artist, or need to find the source of an image. You just right-click on the image and it gives you a list of 10+ top reverse image search engines to click on, and when you click one it automatically plugs the image into the search!

Youtube Audio saves you bandwidth and battery when you just want audio from YouTube (aka: to use Youtube as a music streaming service or listening to narration videos/podcasts)

Then of course there's XKit Rewritten, which I'm sure you'll already recognize as the thing that enhances the tumblr experience.

And there's so many others!

And I get it if you don't like change, and don't wanna deal if the browser appearance is either different than you're used to, or worse- ugly. I get it, I do. But the good news is if the only thing holding you back is that you've gotten used to how Chrome looks, Firefox Dark theme is literally so similar I didn't even notice the difference when I switched. (And I imagine the same is true of the light theme) There's also literally a whole library of themes if you want a more customized look!

And some of you might be thinking "But I have a google account! GMail, Drive- Everything! Won't I have to stop using all that if I switch?" NOPE. Being logged into Google isn't the same as being logged into Chrome. You can log right into Google on Firefox same as you would on any other browser and your experience with your mail, drive, etc. will be just the same as if you were in Chrome, just without the collecting and marketing of your data. (That reminds me, There's also extensions to prevent google from tracking you as well, like "Don't track me Google" and "Google Container")

But seriously, Firefox is so great. Not only does it not track you and market your data, it's genuinely just a better experience than Chrome.

If you've been putting off switching, consider this your sign to do it.

Hiya Jo, sorry to come to you for this, but your post on Maya Knuckles was so cool I had to ask. You seem good at researching stuff, do you have any tips on looking for sources on specific groups of people? I've been struggling on finding good resources on indigenous groups from brasil... (I'm brazilian myself but i dont know where to start)

I wouldn't say I'm good at research, as I think I'm more insanely curious and just lucky LOL. A lot of times when I try to search for specific things I try absolutely everything until I stumble on whatever I was looking for!

But usually I start with a quick basic skim-read on whatever google gives you when you look up whatever your looking for. Most often then not it'll probably give a wikipedia page, some related news articles and some unsourced pages. A lot of times I won't use any of these, but it's a good way to get a feel for what you'll need to keep an eye for.

What I mean is that sometimes just looking for the main subject of the research wont actually give you what you're looking for. For example, when I was looking for Mayan stuff, it kept giving me Inca and Aztec info, which is cool, but wasn't what i was looking for. But since these 3 were usually grouped together, looking for Inca and Aztec books/resources actually helped me a bunch into finding what I was looking for, and more! So keep an eye out on how the subject you're looking for is COMMONLY described, what's usually associated to it, what people talk about the subject etc.

Then you can go actually searching for thing now, I recommend using DuckDuckGo! And always check if they got a source. Plenty of articles will say things that they've seen on other articles, which maybe are true! but then you always run the risk of getting incorrect facts. So always check, if it's not sourced, run another search with the info and see if another article has a source.

When you do find an article/book with a source THEN you can fall down the rabbit hole! No joke one sourced article can lead you to 5 sources, which most probably also have sources. So from there it's pretty easy to search up on references.

If you run into a dead end and still hasn't found what you're looking for I recommend checking what the wikipedia page is citing as sources. You might not be able to access everything there, but some links should be able to redirect you to somethings.

In terms of paywalled scientific articles, disabling javascript usually works (right click on the page -> inspect element -> find the gear on the top right of the window it just showed up -> scroll down until you see a checkbox saying "disable Javascript" -> and refresh page). But if that doesn't work, Sci-Hub is fucking amazing. Just put down your ref or DOI and voilá!

For books I recommend checking the Internet Archive! They usually have what you're looking for, but also half of the time you can just type "Book name PFD" and it'll usually come up after a few search pages. Just make sure you know how to download stuff without getting a virus in you PC.

Reverse image search can also be pretty useful if you find an image related to the subject, since you can link up to other articles/blogs.

If you're STILL running in dead ends, switching up languages can help (probably not your case since your brazilian and most likely already searching in portuguese but yknow). Google translate extensions can really help looking into pages with languages you don't know! It's not perfect but it might help you get a gist of it.

And lastly if you want to know more about Indigenous people from Brazil, I got a couple of reccomendations (most in portuguese btw)!

Tips for starting out a new writing blog ?

tbh tags. establish a tag system. figure out how you’re gonna organize your reblogs, your posts, the characters you write for etc etc. like srsly i wish i had done that when i started this blog, now i’m going back to manually change tags to fit my new tagging system.

i honestly choose an aesthetic first. name, title, descrip, pfp, bkg. it’s always the most fun for me. pick your fave colors bcos those will stick with you the longest.

put your age in your bio or pinned. super important

make a navi page, and masterlist page first. organize your masterlist by fandom ppl rly like that. make an anon page when you get your first emoji anon and keep track of themmmm by goddd i did not keep track of my emoji anons and recently had to revamp the whole thing, everyone had to pick new emojis. do a rules page also, and if you need help defining your boundaries in your rules take a look at mine bcos mine is super thorough

if you write smut don’t use the actor’s name or character’s name plain. like when i write a anakin skywalker smut post, i don’t say “hayden christensen” or “anakin skywalker” in the tags bcos it’s a good way to get stuck with a community label. chances are someone is in those tags that doesn’t look for smut and doesn’t know what a blow a community label is, and they just hit the “add community label” button so tumblr nails you with one. always tag your smut fics with “(character) smut” or “(character) x reader” and never just “(character)”

don’t tag more than you have to. like you don’t have to clog up tags with things that don’t pertain to it. if you’re writing anakin skywalker x reader don’t tag the fic as “obi wan x reader” too. keep your tags relevant otherwise ppl will tell u not to clog up tags.

i hate reposting fan art, i take it very seriously, and i always try to check if something i reblog is drawn by the original poster. anyway, i was scrolling through posts from 2012 the other day and found a really cute fan art of ichihime that i wanted to reblog, but when i checked op's blog, i wasn't very sure if it was original or reposted. the op had only 2 original art pieces - 1) the one i wanted to reblog, 2) a gif art that had a very similar style to #1 and could have been "taken" from the same artist. these are the only "original" bleach posts on this blog. op reblogged all other fan art, so clearly they're not a SERIAL reposter, but they hadn't tagged it with #my art, or anything like that, so i wasn't sure. i wanted to be sure it was theirs before i reblogged it.

my next step was to do a reverse image search, but that wasn't very useful either, because it either led me to pintrest (which is THE place for stolen work), or fanpop (which is, again, not reliable because it was full of stolen fan art). however, even if they weren't the right sources, the sources i found were still useful because the oldest date i could trace for this reposted picture was 2009. this means it definitely had to be drawn/posted in or before 2009, but after 2001, which is when the manga was first published iirc. i used this information to do a custom range search on google using terms like "ichigo, orihime, wedding" etc etc, but again: nothing. i can find renders of this image, edits of this image, the same image but with slightly different details, but i can't find the original poster + original site it was posted in.

i guess for the time being i've decided to give up. i'm not sure what the statute of limitations is for reblogging a post that has old, reposted fan art in it. i'm not sure if the original artist is around or even cares if i reblog a stolen version of their art because i don't know their policy on reposts. some artists are okay with it, others aren't, etc etc. it's entirely possible the op has deleted all social media and taken down the original. it's entirely possible they don't care about bleach anymore and wouldn't have cared if i reblogged it, but that didn't sit right with me either way.

my last resort is to ask if any of you can recognize the following pictures and tell me if you can pinpoint the username of the artist who originally drew it! it's a really gorgeous piece of art, i think it captures ichigo and orihime so well, it filled my heart with so much joy when i first saw it, and if could reblog it a 100x times i would. it's really wonderful that art from more than a decade ago still has the power to travel through the vast ethers of the internet and give us so much joy. i hope op knows that their art has touched a lot of people and made them smile! it made me smile, at the very least, but i digress.

THREAD: How to verify images online? Social media is awash with false or misleading images, some of which get millions of engagements. So, here's a simple guide on ways you can quickly check the veracity of an image you see on your social media feeds.

Reverse image search is the most fundamental part of content verification - the process of searching to find if, and when, an image has appeared on the internet before, and in what context. Google Lens, Yandex, TinEye and Bing are among the free tools that allow you to do this.

Lens is Google's excellent tool for checking online content. Here's a tweet by US conspiracy theorist Stew Peters claiming this cloud was seen in Turkey just before the recent earthquake. On Chrome, simply right-click on the image and select "search image with Google".

Google Lens will bring up a range of relevant results. If you click on the first link, you will see a Guardian report clarifying this was a lenticular cloud spotted in Bursa, Turkey, on 19 January - almost three weeks before the earthquake.

You've got your answer. But if you're keen to find the first source of the image, you can keep looking through Google Lens results for the earliest date. You'll find this Instagram post from 19 January. The user confirms she took the image at 8 o'clock that day.

Look for notable signs or landmarks in an image and use the crop feature to narrow down your search. In this image, those tower blocks in blue, yellow and green are a distinct feature. Crop the image on Lens and it'll quickly tell you that is Bogota, Colombia.

Google Lens results are not chronological, which means you sometimes have to scroll through several pages of results to find the earliest date. This image went viral days after the Russian invasion, claiming to show children seeing off Ukrainian troops. Let's check it on Lens.

Crop the image and click on "find image source". The first few pages of results are all from 2022 and 2023, but on page four you'll see the date 13 May 2016. Click on the link. You'll see the image on Flickr posted by Ukraine's Ministry of Defence, meaning it's an old photo.

Lens also helps you quickly translate text in another language, say a street or shop sign in an image, or spot text added to a doctored image. If you click on text in Lens for this alleged Zelensky image, it'll bring up fact-checks which show the photo has been manipulated.

TinEye is another well-known, free reverse image search engine. While it may not be as comprehensive as Google Lens, TinEye has a very unique feature that I really appreciate: it allows you to filter results in a chronological order. https://tineye.com

Let's verify this viral image from last year, claiming to show a Nazi wedding in Ukraine. Upload the image to TinEye and you'll quickly see two things: The image seems to date back to at least 2016 or 2019, and that may not be the Ukrainian flag, but the Russian imperial flag.

The fourth link leads us to a 2018 article that states not only has the flag been doctored, but also the image was taken in Novokuznetsk, Russia. If you reverse search that Lenin monument photo in the article, you will find it indeed matches the monument in the original image.

Okay. Third time just this week seeing my own art reposted and/or seeing my friends’ art reposted. I guess some people need a do’s and don’ts of sharing art. I’m tired of seeing this.

Reposting looks like:

Posting artwork that you took off of Pinterest, or other social media without permission from the artist to do so.

Yes. Even if it has the artist’s watermark

Yes. Even if you have tagged the artist and/or linked to their external page.

Why Artists don’t like it:

We have our own accounts where we’re posting our art, and would like those posts to receive engagement.

We didn’t consent to our art being reposted.

You are not entitled to repost someone else’s art and get likes/reblogs/retweets whatever on art that you did not make.

Read that again.

What you can do instead:

Understand that the vast majority of art posted to Pinterest is stolen. If you like a piece of art you see there, You can do a reverse google image search to try and find the original artist, or search up the name listed on the watermark if there is one. This usually takes about max 5 minutes to find the correct source.

Reblog/retweet/etc the art directly from the artist’s account. This means that the engagement goes to the artist! Happy artist!! We’ll make more art!!

If the artist is not on the social media platform that you are, you can ask them if you can repost to yours with credit.

If they say yes, feel free to post away! Just mention that you are posting with permission and make sure you keep your receipts in case someone asks

If they say no, fear not! You can still enjoy the art and share it with your friends. Just DM your friends links to the artist’s post! That way they still get the engagement and remain happy artists, and you and your friends get to enjoy art.

Once more: even if art is posted with linked or @‘ed credit — if it was not reposted with permission, it harms the artist. Cut it out.

I don't think so. Well, maybe?

Truth is, if I had more experience with it, I would be able to give a more decisive answer. But based only on what do know, I would say no.

The image search engines I use have different sensitivities to change between the starting image and the target. For example, SauceNAO cannot link a crop to the full image—it will either find the exact same crop, or won't find it at all. Google Lens, however, will happily feed you several hundred crops of the same image, all slightly different and with varying colors.

But these are systems that frequently fail at finding exact matches of perfectly intact images, so... your results may vary. Regarding the methods I use, you can read about the engines I rely a lot on here. There's also a bit more in that tag.

Since the wider internet is talking about plagiarism I think it's a good time to start talking about art theft/uncredited reposting/etc. as well and I'm particularly going to talk about my experience with it.

Before I say anything else I want to say please don't harass people who may not have a good grasp on internet etiquette! (and please assume that is the case unless someone has intentionally plagiarized/stolen people's work and credited it as their own) That is not what I'm asking you to do and for future reference if someone was excessively rude to you in calling out that you reposted my things I did not endorse that behavior. I do encourage calling out when you see people reposting art and linking back to the original work but I do not encourage harassment. On a similar note, this isn't meant to make anyone feel bad or guilty for not having a good grasp on this particular thing. This is just me explaining how it makes me feel and hopefully get people to understand why it's so hurtful so they don't do it in the future, and maybe they get to me explaining it nicely before other people explain it not-so-nicely LOL.

Some reasons why I personally don't like it when people repost my art even if this particular post is a shitpost and not something I put a whole lot of effort into:

Images get edited and distorted as the meme chain goes on, I have seen this end up with artists feeling like their art that they put a lot of effort into like all that work was a joke. Which, evidently is pretty disrespectful

In a personal anecdote, I have seen people say really rude things about me and the Blazblue community on Tumblr while reposting my things (art and otherwise) on twitter and other social media sites. It's really hurtful that people will disrespect me and my friends while using the bits and pieces they like.

Additionally, not everyone on the internet is familiar with common English-speaking internet terminology and etiquette. What may seem like a compliment or neutral statement for you may be rude to them. Generally speaking, a lot of Japanese artists take great offense to their work being reposted in any way whatsoever. ESPECIALLY if you didn't ask beforehand. People have privated or deleted works or entire accounts over this.

It takes away attention from the artist, and this isn't just people complaining about their art not getting enough likes/reblogs online. I have had my commissions open for months with next to no attention toward it and have periodically given up on promoting, with that in mind I grow more bitter about the fact that my only work that regularly gets attention isn't even representative of my current work but also isn't even attached to my name.

There are a lot more reasons, but it really is just a matter of respecting people who make the content you like and crediting people who make things you like.

If you see art that might be fanart and want to find the original source so you can either share it in a server, ask the artist permission to use it somewhere else, or sort of vigilante credit it for somewhere else, here's some places you can easily reverse search for images or find the artist who drew them (hint: if a work has been deleted it's good practice to still credit the artist)

SauceNAO - especially good for fanart since it's a curation of popular Japanese and western image sharing sites. Works best with full images. Found my art on pixiv and deviantART.

Google Image Search - Unreliable, may work with popular artwork but will probably struggle to find it otherwise, very rarely found my artwork. But probably your better bet for heavily cropped images at least to find the full image and then plug it in sauceNAO

But even then the best practice is if you don't know the source don't repost it until you've found it, and always reblog/retweet/what have you from the original artist before considering reposting it on your own account. Be strict and insistent on asking if people know the source of art they are reposting especially in discord servers and online spaces where it's commonly done.

Little bit of both. Reverse image search (most likely with tineye actually) I do when I need higher picture quality or different pictures of the same source to see different angles. If I'm lucky, it will even lead me to finding that a picture is from a movie or a TV show that's going to have an IMFDB page, in which case my job is done for me. Most often it's a case of "I know what this is" or "this looks like that" and a bit of research to confirm what I think and not get it wrong.
