the D20 cast is a truly wild yet perfect combination:
emily “hilda hilda” axford - manages to push every interaction to the furthest extreme and commits HARD to making it work. Consistently leaves Brennan speechless, which is a hard thing to do.
Ally “eggroll time” Beardsly - consistently rolls some of the most important narrative Nat 20s. Also has a lot of the best comedic dialogue each season. I always think about the casual “hey, baby” towards Ayda. Cracks me up every time.
Lou “rolling up” Wilson - A great role player. His best moments come when he’s allowed to get frantic. He’s always so disgusted by the enemy the group is fighting. A lesbian ally.
Siobahn “Boggy the Froggy” Thompson - I’ve said it before, a truly underrated player. She is so in tune with combat it’s not even funny, and her characters, while sometimes subtle, have so much heart.
Zac “Are you my dad?” Oyama - King of the himbos. The comedic timing on this guy is incredible, he can make the entire table laugh with just one word. He commits to bits in the long term that get funnier the more you hear them.
Brian “My Gender is Gun” Murphy - Only has two modes: small little guy and BIG HEFTY BOI. The perfect antithesis of Ally’s perfect rolling. Always seems to be a little anxious about whatever’s happening
Brennan “Kill the Dog” “FUCKED Up” “Rad” Lee Mulligan - I don’t need to explain.
I could watch these guys play anything.

Upon rewatch it does occur to me that Brennan basically set himself up by letting K2 roll divine intervention second and still get the help action from Adaine. I loved that he did it knowing the absolute bananas turn things were gonna take if it succeeded.
Zac jumping right into DMing and Brennan just letting him go (and coming right back in at the perfect story moment) was just such seamless improv and trust. Beardsley adding the pregnant element, and Lou/Fabian denying it until he saw how much it got to Brennan was just *chefs kiss*
Honestly the level of trust and professionalism that all of them has to successfully perform the requested psychic reset and resume the story at the end made the whole thing feel a little magical. And then blimey at the very end and Ally nods in like “it was always gonna end this way”. Perfect. Truly a testament to what great comedians and storytellers they all are.

So my takeaway so far from watching more Dimension 20 is that people don’t talk about Zac and Lou enough, and Emily’s a way more savvy player than her fandom reputation would point to.
Dimension 20 fandom stuff leaked through to me through osmosis, and I don't think I ever saw anything about Zac and Lou (well, Lou pre-EXU: Calamity tbh) and y'all, they're both so good? Zac in particular is probably my favorite player at the D20 table. He's a master of the stealth one-liner, and his characters are always unexpected yet somehow perfect for the setting. I would love to see him let loose on a slightly more serious setting, I think he would kill it. And I've talked about Lou a lot before and how much I love his energy but he really helps the D20 table come alive and he's one of the most focused and savvy role-play experts in the group.
With Emily, the fandom narrative around her created imo a TOTALLY incorrect impression of what her playstyle would be. She’s way more tactical than people give her credit for, and tbh it’s frustrating to see her really solid storytelling instincts reduced to “she ruined Brennan’s plans!” or "chaos player!" Brennan lamenting her savvy gameplay moves seems to be mostly him being hyperbolic. In reality Emily's very good at seeing the big picture and helping make a great story. Having now seen her masterfully adapt to very different settings and tones between ACoFaF and USC, I think people don't appreciate how much she's paying attention and settling in to the story presented and really helping it thrive.

🚨SPOILERS FOR FANTASY HIGH JUNIOR YEAR EPISODE 6🚨
Dimension20 "Fantasy High Junior Year"
Episode 6 "Party Politics"
Timestamp: 1:24:48
Video Length: 3min. & 33sec.
Gertie Bladeshield, Queen Bee of the Apiarists' Society (Pt. 1 | ‣Pt. 2)
Kristen pats Gertie's back and puts a sticker on her back that says "It's always happy hour at Applebees." 😭✋
Riz: "Gertie is already voting for you!" 😂🤣💀
Gertie turns around with the sticker on her and looks at Kristen.
Gertie: "And hey, I made this for you, by the way."
Brennan: "And you see it is a little bumblebee, but its little body is in the shape of an apple with a little stem coming out of the top of its back. So it's a little black and yellow striped- "
Riz: "This is great."
Kristen: "Oh, thank you."
Fabian: "Is it alive?"
Kristen: "Omg, this is so cool."
Gertie: "It's just a little toy. It's a little thing.
Fabian: "Oh, thank god."
Fig: "Ohhh, okay."
Gertie: "But if you unscrew it-"
Brennan: "And you see that she takes, it's almost like a little makeup jar thing where it has a flush lid that you can unscrew, and you see there's a little glass jar of honey inside."
Kristen: "OMG!" *eats some*
Adaine: "So we don't even need to join, 'cause the honey's already here."
Gertie: "There you go, and a benefit of honey is-"
Fabian: *tries some* "Oh, that's not that good."
GERTIE GETS MAD AT FABIAN!!! 😂😂😂😂👏👏👏👏
Riz: "Gertie! Gertie!"
Ally: "I give her the Help action." 😭😂✋
Fig: "Gertie, tell him!" 😂
Gertie: "Get ready for Bladeshield! Stinger, come to me!" 😂🤣💀
Fabian is so confused 😂
Fig: "Gertie, Gertie, Gertie!" 😂✋
Gorgug: "Bladeshield, no!" 😂🤣💀
Ally: "I give her the Help action. I give her the Help action." 😂
Lou: "It's not that good!"
Gertie's initiative is 22 😂
Fabian's initiative is 14 😂🤣💀
Brennan: "She's gonna go to disarm you."
Ally! 😂😂
An opposed athletics check between him and Gertie! 😭✋
Murph: "Wait!" 😂🤣
Emily: "Can I Hex Fabian so he has disadvantage?" 😂🤣💀
Brennan: "Disadvantage? Yes, you can." 😂🤣💀
Lou: "All right, I got a 20."
Brennan: "Okay, you resist being disarmed. It is your turn."
Fabian is gonna trip attack! 😭✋
Lou: "Does a 27 hit?" 😭✋
Brennan: "27 hits."
Emily: "Silvery barbs. Like a bee's barbs!" 😂🤣💀
Lou: "That's better. Yeah, that's better, so 28."
Emily gives advantage to Gertie 😭✋
Zac: "I cast Heroism on Gertie." 😭✋
Lou: "DC17 check to resist the trip."
Brennan: "She resists the trip."
Lou: "Okay."
Ally: "I bonus action cast Shield of Faith. Her AC goes up by two." 😂🤣💀
Brennan: "She resists the trip, but you do, thwack, she has to step back from it."
Lou: "Yes."
Gertie: "I'm leaving."
Brennan: "As she walks out, Fabian, you get a blip on your phone."
"Nemesis Alert. New Nemesis Detected." 😭✋
Riz: "What is everyone doing?!"
Kristen: "It's so good!"
Riz: "We're falling into such easy traps!" 😭✋
Kristen: "It's so good."
Fabian: "I've had better honey."
Brennan: "There's a list that says Gertie Bladeshield and Chungledown Bim."
Riz: "Okay, we have just learned that Gertie is very forward when she's angry at someone and had just made you an enemy. But, there was a possibility that Gertie could have been someone sent to do something to us, and we just ate the honey! We just ate it! We need to be more careful!" 😭✋
Ally wants to do an insight check
Riz: "We got people that are trying to get us kicked out of school!"
Kristen: "You're right, you're right. Why did it come in a special hand-whittled thing?"
Riz: "No, but that's good! Gertie seemed fine!"
Kristen: "Gertie seemed fine."
Ally: "Can I do an insight check on the honey? Is it bad?"
Fig: "If we get the bees on our side, we'll be unstoppable. They're everywhere."
Ally: "Nat one."
Riz: "I don't even know if we're invited to the bee club."
Brennan: "This honey's so good. Even if it's poison, it's just so good." 😂😂😭😭
ALLY!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Fabian: "Let me get you some real honey, all right?"
Kristen: "Back off!"
Fabian: "Okay!" 😂😭✋
Adaine: "You don't know where anything in your house is, except the milk."
Fabian: "Cathilda had better honey. It's somewhere in here."
BRENNAN AND EMILY JUST LAUGHING AT ALLY GOING CRAZY WITH THE HONEY! I'M CRYING!!! 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gorgug: "It's probably just got more sugar."
Fabian: "Probably."
Kristen: *clears throat* "Oh, sorry."
Fig: "Apple bee."
Kristen: "Yeah, exactly."
Fig: "We need to partner with Gertie."

Emily Axford is so good. This first scene with the woolf is perfect
I knew I was right to love Big Bad Wolf
"I always say I hate pickles but I loove pickles
NO STOP"
#PONDLIFE
I love this cricket. I love it.
Theeeere we go with the Kings
That boar was awful whaou
Snow hold I'm starting to despise you. And I learned about you 15sec ago. Pib AND Gerard? Fucked up
Oooooh Toy Island let's gooo
Gerard kids in Toy Island will love you, they might have fun torturing you but they will love you
Pib ily. But. How was Tomas a great king who played by the rules? He came to you because he felt he had no skills and you tricked the kingdom to consider him as a king.
Yeah thank you Wolf
Oh Pib that's perfect "you don't play by the rules - - I think no one ever asked me if I wanted these rules"
"You're gonna hate comedy if you hate three" Ally I love it
Pinocchio the little wooden boy, ex-warlock of the disturber of the worlds (Stepmother) is about to make a sex joke at the Big Bad Wolf (deific version of death) and all of his friends are treating him like a king. Rosamund is kneeling, Pib is giving him his weapons, Timothy is Le Penseur de Rodin,Gerard is holding is action. Ofc Ylfa is laughing
Oh they are all kneeling with Le Penseur positions.
Al of them trying to not die of laughter is the best medicine in the world. Ally sneaking out, Siobhan and Emily laughing so hard, Zac and Murph trying to hold it
Brennan and Lou having to be invested otherwise this episode will never end
FIVE?? TWELVR?
Oh! Brennan you genius
The best grave is not the one you dig yourself. It's the one your friend enthusiastically dig for you after thing you up to a tree. Pinocchio can testify cause them pushing him to have a second joke is truly a betrayal.
Like. Asking your improviser friend to come up on a joke in front of a Death deity is diabolical
So in the Neverafter. They have movie theater, posters, movies and the Wolf of Wall Street. Also wolves have pockets. And wigs
MURPH. INCREDIBLE. The posture? The tone? "one day you're going to die - - I know" hilarious
Add to to-do list: watching Death fuck so I can have material for real life (death?) comic material to not die
The wolf talking about Baba Yaga is everything I've ever wished from any media. That's perfection I want to write an essay about it. Two of the biggest folklore characters. Both neutral and bad.
"she's kind of quirky"
Canon in the dimen 20 universe: Baba Yage plays the Ukulele
If you want to know you can find ukulele cover of Fast Car. Easily

Lou: great, so 9 uh 14
Brennan: fourt-- wait, 14?
Lou: 14. Don't look at -- don't do that. That's your "I'm sorry I have to do this" face!
Emily: oh my God!!
Brennan: you know I'm always rooting for you
Lou: yea I know
Brennan: I'm always rooting for you
Siobhan: don't cry!
Emily: [waggling her finger back and forth] because you make your NPCs say the Night Yorb every single other word
Brennan: I have to abide by the rules of things I choose to do
Lou: well, the hangman is behind the van for whatever you choose to do
Brennan: Murph I'm gonna need you to roll five D10
Siobhan: No!
Lou: Oh my god
Ally & Siobhan: you're gonna make Murph do it?
Brennan: Murphy's driving
Murph: it's the rule. Okay, I'm back to myself this episode gang. Don't worry.
Lou: Murph, don't you --
Murph: except for the beans that were due!
Lou: don't break any probabilities this time.
Murph: here's beans [holding up a die] the beans are due, so these beans stay in the can.
Brennan: that last damage roll was .002 probability
Lou: so no more probability smashing alright?
Murph: no more probability smashing.
Lou: Or break it the other way. Just regular cursed rolls. All of them are ones.
Murph: just regular cursed rolls [rolls] pretty cursed. [Math happens]
Brennan: Fabian you take 22 points of damage. Please put your mini prone -- [moves mini]
*group laughs*
Ally: you have to stay in the van
Lou: I was trying to!
Murph: you have to wear your seatbelt, Fabian
Brennan: Fabian has jumped and gone under the Hangvan twice
Ally: you have to wear your seatbelt
Zac: in what, two turns?
Siobhan: yes!
Brennan: in, like two rounds.
Lou: two thirds of my turns have been underneath -- have started underneath this van
Siobhan: all you had to do was roll a two both times
Lou: that's it. All I had to do was roll a two. If I roll a two it happens.
Brennan: can I just say for anyone watching at home, don't jump out of moving vehicles, because even if you're so agile, the risk reward --
Murph: so agile.
Brennan: so agile!
Lou: *stutters indignantly* I was climbing! All right, well, the hangman scoops me up again. Can I make a check to grab onto the hangman?
Brennan: give me another DC 15 acrobatics
Lou: don't do this to me. You're embarrassing me on this show
Brennan: this is where -- if you roll a nat one this is gonna be worse than Cody's turn in Unsleeping City.
Lou: I've already lost one dice alright? *Rolls a 25*

From all the TTRPG shows you've watched so far, do you have any favourite player character builds, or builds that you think were especially well suited to the campaign/setting that the character was in?
You'd have to narrow this down - there's a lot (I stopped keeping my massive spreadsheet of character races and classes in actual play updated bc it was getting ridiculous but it's at over 100) so I'm just going to call out a few players who consistently hit this mark in everything they do.
Surprising no one, Emily Axford. Truly one of the biggest reasons why I get annoyed at the "haha Emily will DESTROY this DM" is that Emily has an incredibly good eye towards party composition and collaboration with DMs while also pulling off some wild multiclasses. This serves her in NADDPod especially, since they're a small party and everyone needs to be versatile. I will say that while I love Callie's build and think it mechanically works very well and made sense for her background in Mothership, it feels like it needs more in-story explanation that we haven't quite gotten to, but I also trust that we will.
Surprising no one with taste, Travis Willingham. Even in cases where we know it was off-the-cuff (Grog) he did a lot of work establishing why Grog was the class he was and how he felt about it; and in cases where it was pre-planned, the amount of backstory and mechanics work he does before and during the story is admirable to the point of ridiculousness (updating Chet's backstory to accommodate what Matt said in a flashback sequence? bananas). His multiclass choices always fit both the base build and the story admirably, and always fit a niche within the party that is very much needed, and the choice to play someone like Cerrit in Calamity or Fjord in general would put him here on their strength alone.
Again surprising no one, Aabria Iyengar; DMs make the best players. Capable of some great optimization (Deanna, Laerryn, whatever the hell Antiope had going on) or just playing a character with a simple build but with a strong understanding of the setting (Myrtle the Bitch; Suvi). Really, Suvi alone puts her here in that Aabria maybe more than anyone (though she might be tied with Emily Axford) understands wizards and understands that your character is a part of the DM's worldbuilding and needs to reflect that, while also serving as your contribution to that world.
And finally, Lou Wilson. He often does fairly simple builds - Nydas and late-game Fabian are the only ones with significant multiclassing beyond barbarian/fighter level dips - but he always knows precisely what his character is here to do from the start and why, can adapt on a dime, and he has a fantastic eye for subclass choice.
Honorable mentions:
Zac Oyama tends not to go for incredibly complex mechanics, but he has a great understanding of building a character who fits into the world in a way that both reflects and expands upon it, and has a great sense of subtlety, restraint, negative space, and comedic timing. (I've been meaning to make a negative space/comedic timing post but honestly just watch Zac and Travis.)
Grouping Taliesin Jaffe and Siobhan Thompson together because they are both very strong mechanically and not afraid of a wild min-maxed triple multiclass on occasion, but more specifically because they've both made at least one character I really did not vibe with and also absolutely could not fault in any way other than "not my thing, personally." Related to that, both of them bring an "I'm a generous and skilled player and I don't really give a fuck what the audience thinks" vibe that I (the audience) respects the hell out of.
Jake Hurwitz is the rare player who 100% knows his wheelhouse and embraces it whole-heartedly, and he puts in the character and setting work to keep it interesting.
Justin McElroy is mechanically competent but nothing impressive, but he absolutely thinks about his characters and the setting and how they fit together in a deep and interesting way and which sets him apart in TAZ. Kind of with Jake in that he 100% writes what he knows; I think this kind of player is underrated and having played with some, they shouldn't be.
And on the rare chances Brennan Lee Mulligan gets to play, not only is he min-maxed to the hilt but he always is working with the DM in a truly admirable way, even as he builds a little guy who cannot roll below a 25 deception or who has somehow managed to get sneak attack twice per round or something wild like that.

A lesson I have learned about myself in the past few months is no matter where in the world I am I will make time for fantasy high!
Greetings from Not Home, my sleep schedule is absolutely fucked. Without further ado let’s dive right into episode 18 (!!)
So. Picture the ocean.
Burth Bakarath <3
Yeah the fact that they’re allowed to hold the election off of school grounds is still wild to me
Oh my god MURPH came up with Gerard Neigh???? Love him so bad
Happy Birthday Me And Congratulations President Applebees
Ooh okay so they’re trying to get the nightmare king to fuck with the ship?
Sprak!
I love ship stats!!!!
As the birthday boy/most popular kid in school ☺️
The bad boys are steering the ship!!
I love the dynamic of the Most Powerful Girls In The World and The Coolest Guys
Hey guys be nicer to Jawbone please

got a little too bored today and started tallying up d20 cast appearances for the intrepid heroes (and brennan). this is only off of the top of my head so if i forget something don't get on me about it.
Intrepid Heroes D20 Cast Appearances, including sidequests (and BLeeM), ranked from highest to lowest:
Brennan Lee Mulligan with a total of 17/19 seasons that he has appeared in; dm/gming for 14 of those seasons. 7 of those are main cast/intrepid heroes, so assume they each have a baseline of seven.
next up is mister Lou Wilson, with a total of 10 seasons; 3 sidequests, all with guest gms. the man is a combination of dnd knowledge and commit to the bit. great with any season, but has always sidequested with brennan.
tied at nine, we have zac oyama and ally beardsley; ally featured heavily in 2021 sidequests while zac has been more recent in '22 and '23.
tied at eight we have the lovely ladies emily axford and siobhan thompson! i'm so glad siobhan has joined the ranks of intrepid heroes in sidequests, it feels like they just have a lot of fun on the shorter runs.
and in last place, mr brian 'murph' murphy. i know he's busy with naddpod but only intrepid heroes seasons? 7/19? please come on a sidequest my guy. i promise it's fun.
halfway through this process i've decided that guests are also being included now.
Guest Cast D20 Appearances, ranked from highest to lowest:
at the top of the guest list, the effervescent aabria iyengar, with 5/12 sidequest seasons! 2 seasons of gming, 3 seasons as a player, all 3 of which are in established d20 worlds e.g. spyre and calorum. assuming we have an intrepid heroes season coming up at some point in the future, murph can get a bit of a lead, but if aabria's coming on to guest more there's a very real potential that she will outcompete him. i look forward to the day.
next up: erika ishii with 4 seasons. they came on in the first sidequest and have had a steady stream of appearances since. always some kind of mage--tends towards druids/nature magic. 2/3 of her dnd appearances have been druids with an eye for creepy crawlies and the darker side of nature. he's got an aesthetic that he sticks to, and i admire that. real commitment, and not just to the bit.
tied with three we have rekha shankar and matthew mercer. ooh four-syllable names. sorry i got distracted. anyway. very excited to see rekha in desiquest, though she's a fantastic player on d20. big swings, fun character choices, a good balance of support for narrative and spotlight. and then we have matt--one season gming, but for the seasons he's played? some truly cringefail guys who learn to believe in themselves and break out of their personal depression to deliver an asskicking in their finale episode. man likes his themes.
now for the team of two (not the 2 crew) in chronological order of first appearance: mike trapp, ify nwadiwe, lily du, carlos luna, danielle radford, and izzy roland. just enough to make an average d20 table! i'm getting my fill of trapp and danielle in the current season, but seeing a table of these players together? it has potential.
and for the full list of one time appearances on d20 in chronological order of first appearance (only full seasons, not including oneshots atm):
amy vorpahl
justin mcelroy
clint mcelroy
jessica ross
griffin mcelroy
travis mcelroy
marisha ray
krystina arielle
b. dave walters
katie marovitch
sam reich
raphael chestang
grant o'brien
becca scott
persephone valentine
gabe hicks (gm!)
dani fernandez
jasmine bhullar (gm!)
omar najam
oscar montoya
surena marie
anjali bhimani
monét x change
alaska thunderfuck
bob the drag queen
jujubee
alex song-xia
freddie wong
hank green
i've devoted entirely too much thought to this. and i still have more thoughts. too many thoughts and not enough time. can't wait to see who comes on in the future! don't know if i'll edit this or make a new one. probably just edit this.

Hi! I hope you don't mind me asking, but I've been interested in getting into Dimension 20 for a while, but with all the campaigns they did already, I find it a bit hard to understand which one to start with, so I thought I'd ask you, as you seem to know your stuff ! So I was wondering if there was a chronological order to some campaigns, if there was one you advised to start with, and where I could watch it. I hope this doesn't bother you, have a nice day ! ♥
This doesn't bother me at all, I love questions like this! And this is truly one of the worst weeks of my life, so thanks for the distraction <3
Short answer: d20 is divided into short and long seasons, long with the main cast (brennan dm'ing for lou, emily, murph, zac, ally, and siohban) and short sidequest seasons with different players, mostly dm'ed by Brennan but also with guest dms! You need a monthly/yearly subscription to dropout.tv to watch, but it's truly the best subscription service in my life, $6/month or 60/yr, with d20 putting out a 2 hour episode every week plus a half hour talk show in Adventuring Party (in addition to their other stellar comedy shows, Game Changer and Make Some Noise, especially). If you just want to dip your toes in and see if you like it, you can watch the first seasons of Fantasy High or The Unsleeping City for free on youtube
Long answer! Fantasy High is still to this day my favorite d20 property, it's teen adventurers at an adventuring academy in a sort of magical realism world. It's extremely funny and the first season was the first season of d20 so most of them are learning 5e after switching over from 3.5, although a few had no previous dnd experience. The second season is probably my favorite season of any tv show ever, and it's a great introduction to the main cast. Those characters will probably always be the closest to my heart in d20, they're all perfect to me.
The Unsleeping City is an urban fantasy series set in a magical New York that is also very good! There's again two seasons, and they are both well worth watching. The second season is again even better than the first, imo.
If you're getting into it because of Matt's season next month, then his The Ravening War series is a prequel to another main cast season, A Crown of Candy. ACOC is the biggest outlier in d20, which isn't ONLY a comedy show, but comedy is very much at the core of d20, but ACOC is a very, very emotionally heavy show. I loved it, but I have also never rewatched it since it took such a mental toll. It's a very high stakes, inter-party conflict, no resurrection magic world, and the entire cast had backup characters prepared in case of character death. It's very good, but not the best example of what the rest of d20 is like. If you've seen EXU Calamity, it is similar tonewise, just a longer campaign.
Then there's the two most recent main cast campaigns. A Starstruck Odyssey is a screwball scifi series set in a world created by Brennan's mom, Elaine Lee, who wrote the original Starstruck comics/play! It's very much a labor of love from him, and it was the first season the main cast filmed in person post-pandemic and the unhinged energy is truly off the charts. It was extremely good and would be a great starting point, no knowledge of the original Starstruck is necessary.
The most recent campaign is Neverafter, which is horror-inspired, but still very much a comedy. It's fairy tale inspired and I'm very sad it just ended because it was so good, although the ending was perfect.
Then there are the sidequests! My personal favorites of those are Mice and Murder, a murder mystery series set in an animal-populated turn of the century England, where the cast were all collegehumor alum so it was very funny and I love murder mysteries and think Brennan did an excellent job at it, and would frankly love another murder mystery season from him. A Court of Fey and Flowers from Aabria is another favorite, a fey-regency romance mashup that was absolutely perfect. The Seven is an all ladies/nonbinary season (dm'd by Brennan) that's technically a spinoff of Fantasy High so I would recommend watching it first, but also it stands alone if you don't mind spoilers for the main seasons.
So!! That was a very long answer, hopefully it was some help to you. You could really pick any season and be fine, and I hope you end up falling in love with d20! My personal recommendations would be to start with either Fantasy High or Starstruck, since I think they're the best examples of what the show is like overall. Good luck! Feel free to let me know what you think :)

It was a good first episode. There's always some growing pains before they lock down the dynamic, but this was a solid introduction to what's coming down the pipeline. Murph and Emily successfully broke my heart the most. One's marriage is crumbling and the other's just a really traumatized child. Lou and Ally character's are pretty great and seem to have the most plot going on ATM. That voice Lou's doing is such a choice. Zac and Siobhan need more time before we can fully sink our teeth in. PIB is entertaining, but that's all we got so far. And while I'm desperately trying to block out Siobhan's intro, beyond the stressful horror, Rosamund didn't give us a lot character wise. Looking forward to getting stressed out by the rest of the season.
I was a big fan of this first episode! There was a lot of interesting stuff intro'd with all the new PCs (and I really got a sense of like...Once Upon a Time but competent lol). I already went through my thoughts a bit in the recap for the week but here are some more casual thoughts on everyone.
(1) Rosamund: Roz seems to have retained a lot of her princess niceties and demeanor which is honestly impressive considering her entire Situation. I'm wondering if this is going to be a Ruby style arc where she turns jaded eventually or if she's just going be Like This the whole time. A sunshine-y character in a crapsack world is always an interesting contrast. Also, we kind of started and ended with her since Pinocchio was warned that someone was coming for her. I'm curious if the fairy who cursed her is the same fairy that Pinocchio met.
(2) Ger: Brennan does this really cool thing where the end of the world is happening but you're like, "Oh no! This character cheated on this other character!" The human drama stuff feels just as weighty and often more weighty than the life or death stuff. That's how I feel about Ger's whole situation. He's really a dude in need of some serious self-reflection and I'm charmed by how pathetic he is. The issues he's having with his wife are so grounded in reality, even though they involve conversations that start, "Remember who we started dating when I was a frog?" Can't wait to see more of him--and hopefully Elodie at some point too. Where is she Brennan???
(3) Tim: Once again, everything with the Gander is totally messed up. I really hate the idea of accidentally stumbling into a kind of eldritch pact. You're right that there's a very clear plot hook with him and his mission with the book. From the way it was framed, it almost seems like the book has the "correct" or at least more wholesome versions of the tales in it somehow. Or is a gateway to where those versions exist? Because Brennan said it was their town but without the flooding and Jack looked like how he "was meant to be" or something like that. A lot to think about.
(Sidenote: Me and my friend were joking about whether the bad guy this season was going to be capitalism, or the church and my halfway joking answer is capitalism in the form of some version of the Disney Corporation lol.)
(4) Puss: I don't have a lot to say about Puss that I haven't already said in my recap but I love Zac putting his all into his cat mannerisms and I really love this grounded look at what would actually happen after the Puss in Boots story. Looking forward to getting more info.
(5) Red: Yikesssssssssssssssssssss. Emily just went for the jugular right away, huh? As usual, no notes Ms. Axford. I think it's super cool they mixed the Red story and the Big Bad Wolf story. I wonder if/when we're going to get details on how it went down with her grandma because we never got that. I feel like Emily might steal the emotional killshot crown from Siobhan for me this season.
(6) Pinocchio: OK first of all, no one can say Lou doesn't commit to the bit. Second of all, as I said in my recap and at the top in Roz's section, there's clearly something afoot here. Why does Pinocchio’s stepmom want Roz kept safe? And who even is she? My pet theory (based on very little info to be fair) is that she's Cinderella herself somehow but she could very easily be lots of other people (one of the stepsisters is a guess I didn't mention in my recap). Clearly, we're missing a ton of puzzle pieces here so I'm eager to get more. Also, I’m gonna be so mad when Lou is having a super emotional scene and he’s talking Like That. You monster.
One last thing: I'm curious about the timeline here. Since Roz has been asleep for 100 years it seems, how does that slot in with everything else? How long has this plan involving her been in motion. If Sleeping Beauty happened 100 years ago, when did—for instance--the Cinderella story happen (if it happened)?
OK, that’s what I got. Looking forward to the next ep on Wed!

Fabian tanks it with Ivy! 😭✋
Brennan: "Anyone else rolling for Mystery?"
Lou: "Oh, I would like to do a half Mystery, half Relationship roll."
Brennan: "Okay."
Lou: "I would like to reach out to Ivy."
Brennan: "Okay."
Siobhan: "Cool."
Lou: "To hang out at school."
Brennan: "Okay. This is a DC 20,"
Lou: "I think I'm at 25."
Brennan: "Oh, you're at 25? Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is a DC 25 Persuasion check."
Lou: "Okay" *rolls dice* "Oh, I missed, but that's not gonna do it."
Brennan: "Okay."
Lou: "I'll take stress."
Brennan: *gasps* "Oooohh baby." (He's so evil! 😭✋)
Lou: "This is the only way I can help solve the mystery. All right?" *rolls dice* "That's not gonna do it."
Ally: "Wait, no!"
Siobhan: "Don't you get advantage?"
Ally: "You get advantage on all your rolls because of that really good Charisma."
Brennan: "No, no, I think you used your advantage on- on-"
Lou: "Bard to hang out with Mazey."
Brennan: "To hang out with Mazey. Yeah, yeah, yeah."
Lou: "I'll take one more stress."
Brennan: "It's your last one you can take for this check."
Lou: *rolls dice* "Nah."
Brennan: "You go up to Ivy at school. How does Fabian approach Ivy?"
Fabian: "Hey. What's going on?"
Ivy: "What's that?"
Fabian: "What's going on?"
Ivy: "I don't know, you tell me."
Fabian: "You know, I just... I thought we started something the other night and it would be cool to get to know you better. You know, me and my friends have kinda been hitting the bricks metaphorically. You know, we're kind of on the outs, especially me and Fig, you know? We're having a lot of rubbers meeting the road, if you know what I'm saying. So, you know, I don't know, I'm just trying to broaden my horizons, socially."
Ivy: "I would say, it seems like you are trying to broaden your horizons. Yeah?"
Fabian: "It seems that way. Yeah. Is it the vibes I'm putting off?"
Ivy: "Well, I hear that you get a lot of those other little dancer friends of yours to hang out and stretch and feel your feelings together all in the room."
Fabian: "Yeah. It's, uh, it's like, uh... it's like, uh... It's like another way of like... I mean, it's a form of battle within oneself. It's honestly incredibly beautiful and important. But, you know, I'm always, you know. *stabbing motions* "I stay, you know? So I was just-"
Ivy: "You stay what? Stabbing?"
Fabian: "Stab. Yes. You and me finish each other's sentences. Crazy."
Ivy: "Nice. Well, best of luck with how important that work is. Yeah. It's nice you got a little partner, right? Student president. If it gets cold, you can wear her like a sweater, I guess."
Fabian: "Uh..."
Emily: "omg."
Fabian: "Uh, cold. That- Now that- Now I might need it now 'cause I'm feeling the chill."
Ivy: "Yeah."
Fabian: "So you don't wanna? You wouldn't wanna?"
Ivy: "Do what?"
Fabian: "I don't know."
Ivy: "Come roll around on the ground?"
Fabian: "I was thinking of something more structured like sparring, but you know, actually-"
Ivy: "You seem a little flustered for Maximum Legend."
Fabian: "Yeah, I think I'm supposed to be somewhere right now. I got a phone call."
Ivy: "Oh, yeah?"
Ally: "I got a phone call as a teenager?!" 😭✋
Siobhan: "I gotta be somewhere. I got a phone call." 😭💀
Fabian: "I have a scheduled phone call with my bank."
Brennan: "She says,"
Ivy: "Well, you better get to that."
Brennan: "She leans in and pulls down on your earlobe a little bit and says,"
Ivy: "You missed your shot, Playboy"
Brennan: "and leans back."
(Zac's reaction at that line was mine too fr! 😭✋)
Ally: "He has a scheduled call with his bank, though. I don't understand how that's a missed shot."
Brennan: "You see...Yeah, Alston Hughes is just like, 'Fabian, we need to talk, your money.' Oh, you also do get 10,000 gold pieces." 😂💀
Lou: "Oh, yeah. Great."
Siobhan: "Jesus Christ."
Ally: "So sick."
Brennan: "Incredible."
(I love everyone just cringing so bad at this entire extremely awkward conversation!!! 😭😭✋✋ It literally had me in tears!!! 😭✋)

I love how the core D20 cast plays their characters across all seasons
Lou plays Kingston, Jammer, Amethar, and Fabian with such history and presence in the world that grounds things, even as they get so fucking wild
Siobhan’s characters have such a heart and earnestness to them that makes them lovable, even when they’re kinda low key dirtbags like Misty (or how Ruby gets for awhile)
Zac’s, oh Zac’s. They’re so beautifully dim, but also pure and just want to support anyone they attach themselves to. They help people be better, even without actually trying, like with Gorgug and Ricky.
Brian and his characters are all rooted in determination and kindness. Theo, Kugrash, and Riz, even Cody, all know what the right thing is and give so much of themselves to the act of being good for people they’re sworn to, people they’ve just met, people who the world doesn’t always think of.
Ally’s characters are often comic relief, but there’s a strong thread of rebirth across Pete and Kristen. (I haven’t finished Shriek Week and am a few episodes from finishing Crown of Candy as I write this!) When they become who they know they are, they become so much more free and a better person as a result, even as they fuck up along the way.
Sofie, Fig, Ruby, and Saccharina all yearn. It’s never quiet, but Emily plays it so earnestly and it’s so affecting that you can’t help but be charmed by her…and also she plays the most batshit chaotic people in existence, who the hell let this woman play D&D.
Splendid cast, great job gang
