9 Peter said to her, “Why did you and your husband agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! Do you hear those footsteps? The men who buried your husband are at the door. They will carry you out in the same way.” 10 At that moment Sapphira fell down by his feet and died. The young men came in and saw that she was dead. They carried her out and buried her beside her husband. — Acts 5:9-10 | Beibl William Morgan (BWM) and Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) William Morgan Welsh Bible Edition © British & Foreign Bible Society 1992 and Easy-to-Read Version Bible Copyright © 2006 by Bible League International. The great apostle was a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin.
He surpassed all his peers in zeal for the Jewish law and their traditions, which he thought to be the cause of God.
He became one of the most fierce enemies and persecutors of Christians. He was one of the conspirators in the martyrdom of St. Stephan.
After the martyrdom of the holy deacon, the priests and magistrates of the Jews raised a violent persecution against the church at Jerusalem in which Saul placed himself above the others.
In the fury of his zeal, he appealed to the high priest and Sanhedrin for a commission to take up all Jews at Damascus who confessed Jesus Christ and bring them bound to Jerusalem that they might serve as public examples to incite terror into others.
But God was pleased to show forth in Saul his patience and mercy.
Saul was almost at the end of his journey to Damascus, when, around noon, he and his company were surrounded by a great light from heaven and fell to the ground.
Then Saul heard a voice, which to him was articulate and distinct, but not understood by the rest:
"Saul, Saul, why dost thou persecute me? Christ said not: Why dost thou persecute my disciples, but me: for it is he, their head, who is chiefly persecuted in his servants."
Saul answered: "Who art thou, Lord?"
Christ said: "Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecute. It is hard for thee to kick against the goad: - to contend with one so much mightier than thyself."
There was a Christian of distinction in Damascus, Ananias, greatly respected by the Jews for his irreproachable life and great virtue.
Christ appeared to this holy disciple and commanded him to go to Saul who was, at that moment, in the house of Judas at prayer.
Ananias trembled at the name of Saul, being familiar with the misdeeds he had done in Jerusalem and the errand for which he set out to Damascus.
But our Redeemer overruled his fears and charged him a second time to go, saying:
"Go, for he is a vessel of election to carry my name before Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel: and I will show him how much he has to suffer for my name. For tribulation is the test and portion of all the true servants of Christ."
Thus a blasphemer and a persecutor was made an apostle. He was chosen to be one of the principal instruments of God in the conversion of the world.
St. Paul never recalled his wonderful conversion, from which have poured forth many blessings, without raptures of gratitude and praise to the Divine and His mercy.
The Church, in thanksgiving to God for such a miracle of his grace, to commemorate so miraculous an instance of his almighty power and to propose a perfect model of a true conversion, has instituted this feast.
We find this mentioned in several calendars and missals of the eighth and ninth centuries, which Pope Innocent III commanded to be observed with great solemnity.

Nadab & Abihu, Annanias & Sapphira
written by Will Schumacher
I was listening to a podcast of Aleph Beta on the death of Nadab and Abihu. Rabbi David Fohrmann spoke of how the language of the story of the death of Nadab and Abihu was the same language used in the sin of Adam and Eve.
As a reminder, Nadab and Abihu are the sons of the first high priest Aaron. The tabernacle has just been erected and it is the beginning of the priesthood working in the tabernacle. Nadab and Abihu offered a strange offering that God did not command and they are killed on the spot.
Leviticus 10: 1-2 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not. 2 And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.
This instantly made me think of the New Testament story of Annanias and Sapphira. They too died instantly when they brought a “strange”/sinful offering to God. Read Acts 10.
I believe these stories replicate each other and show the same message. My assumption was then that the stories are numerically linked by the numbers within the Bible.
The stories are linked by numbers. Strong’s G4551 = Sapphira. This is Bible verse 4551…
Numbers 26:61 And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the Lord.
Adam and Eve dwelled with God and they sinned and spiritually died and were kicked out.
The tabernacle was God’s way to dwell again with His people. Right at the beginning of the tabernacle time Nadab and Abihu sinned in their offering and died and were carried out.
In the New Testament the Church is likened to the tabernacle and temple. We are called the living stones. God is dwelling in us now. Acts 2 shows the Holy Spirit descending on the early church and the start of the 3rd temple. Right at the beginning again Annanias and Sapphira offer a sinful offering and they die and are carried out.
Sapphira is the name and number linking the two stories. It means “sapphire” and comes from Strong’s H5601 used a few times with the image of God on His throne. That image is important I believe in understanding the message God is trying to get across. It’s first use is in Exodus 24:10.
Exodus 24:10 And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.
Notice who was there to see God enthroned over the sapphire floor, Nadab and Abihu.
Exodus 24:9 Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:
Through the work of Christ we are free to dwell with God again, only because His death made us pure before the eyes of God. We should never lose sight of God’s pureness and majesty and our desire should be to be more like Him.

Quick Thought – Tuesday, January 9, 2024: Be Generous (and Honest)
Read Acts 4:32 – 5:11 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. Acts 4:34-35 Reflect Giving is an essential part of being a Christian. We’re supposed to be generous with what we have because the Lord has first been…

Christianity Should Change You
Neal Pollard Reading Luke’s account of things, Saul may have been the chief threat to the Christians at the time recorded in Acts 8-9. He was “ravaging the church” (8:3), “breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord” (9:1). He was doing “much harm” to the saints (9:13). He would look back on this part of his life, calling himself a harmful persecutor and killer of Christians…

The evil in people made them come against Apostle Paul. He wrote a leter to the leadership in hopes of them understanding his testimony of he was not against the Religious laws of their time. And after five days, the high priest, Ananias, came with certain of the rulers, and an expert talker, one Tertullus; and they made a statement to Felix against Paul.

CALiBAN
18 . he/ey . the prince
there were many, many princes at my disposal, especially tempest related, but there's one i can count on to make the whole metaphor here. "this island's mine, by sycorax my mother" (shakespeare, ii.i) says caliban, the inheritance, proclaimed heir, and eurocentricity to the initial idea all really striking to me.

MARiYA PREOBRAZHENSKAYA
23 . she/spark . the watcher
millennials just yearn for a hubris that bests the old ones. mariya has watched enough to know that her actions have consequences. spark knows full well there is a price to pay when it comes to sleeping with one eye open, but she is not so fiscal to miss out on the gamble of life.

Initiating Harriman Into the Ananias Club
April 3, 1907
Ananias Harriman rides a goat around a track while the goat eats his letter; 'He wrote it down,' another member of the Ananias club says. Other members include Tillman, Parker, Chandler, Whitney, and Wallace.
Ananias was a famous biblical liar. Harriman had been accused of falsifying a letter in which President Roosevelt asked him for money.

Saul Becomes a Christian on the Way to Damascus
1 Saul was still talking much about how he would like to kill the followers of the Lord. He went to the head religious leader. 2 He asked for letters to be written to the Jewish places of worship in the city of Damascus. The letters were to say that if he found any men or women following the Way of Christ he might bring them to Jerusalem in chains.
3 He went on his way until he came near Damascus. All at once he saw a light from heaven shining around him. 4 He fell to the ground. Then he heard a voice say, “Saul, Saul, why are you working so hard against Me?” 5 Saul answered, “Who are You, Lord?” He said, “I am Jesus, the One Whom you are working against. You hurt yourself by trying to hurt Me.” 6 Saul was shaken and surprised. Then he said, “What do You want me to do, Lord?” The Lord said to him, “Get up! Go into the city and you will be told what to do.”
7 Those with Saul were not able to say anything. They heard a voice but saw no one. 8 Saul got up from the ground. When he opened his eyes, he saw nothing. They took him by the hand and led him to Damascus. 9 He could not see for three days. During that time he did not eat or drink.
10 In Damascus there was a follower by the name of Ananias. The Lord showed him in a dream what He wanted him to see. He said, “Ananias!” And Ananias answered, “Yes, Lord, I am here.” 11 The Lord said, “Get up! Go over to Straight Street to Judas’ house and ask for a man from the city of Tarsus. His name is Saul. You will find him praying there. 12 Saul has seen a man called Ananias in a dream. He is to come and put his hands on Saul so he might see again.”
13 Ananias said, “But Lord, many people have told me about this man. He is the reason many of Your followers in Jerusalem have had to suffer much. 14 He came here with the right and the power from the head religious leaders to put everyone in chains who call on Your name.” 15 The Lord said to him, “Go! This man is the one I have chosen to carry My name among the people who are not Jews and to their kings and to Jews. 16 I will show him how much he will have to suffer because of Me.”
Saul Is Baptized
17 So Ananias went to that house. He put his hands on Saul and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus has sent me to you. You saw the Lord along the road as you came here. The Lord has sent me so you might be able to see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 At once something like a covering fell from the eyes of Saul and he could see. He got up and was baptized. 19 After that he ate some food and received strength. For some days he stayed with the followers in Damascus. — Acts 9:1-19 | New Life Version (NLV) New Life Version Holy Bible Copyright © 1969, 2003 by Barbour Publishing, Inc. The Conversion of Paul
Rev Sue preached this sermon on Wednesday 25 January 2023. Here it is for you again: Saul’s conversion must surely be the most radical change of direction in history. He was a murderer, perhaps of the worst kind, because he was not himself violent. He did not act from passion and lack of self-control, swept away in the moment, but was fuelled by a cold and fanatical religious hatred. He incited…

ACTS S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 9
Friday, 12/23/22
My apologies for the "lateness" this morning... thawing out, I s'pose...
SCRIPTURE:
So Ananias went and found Saul. He laid his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”   ~ Acts of the Apostles 9:17
OBSERVATION:
I'm not sure if I hear of "this" Anania again after this...
...which may be the point...
His obedience, despite his fear - and his "anonymity" big picture-speaking - had an impact way beyond what he could have imagined...
...and his trust on the Lord's power and not his own abilities, being a messenger so that Saul/Paul "might regain [his]sight and [might] be filled with the Holy Spirit..."
Who are those around me that I can be used to bring to others sight and filling?
...and, maybe more importantly, who are the Ananias-es in my life trying to show me what I need to do in order that I, too, might see and be Spirit-filled?
APPLICATION:
Look for the hard-things He "offers" - and step into them...
Lay my hands on these things - literally and figuratively - beyond just words...
Accept the laying on of hands and those He sends into my life to regain my sight and footing and filling...
PRAYER:
Father God Almighty - forgive my selfish self-sufficiency - my "know-it-all-ness" that sometimes fails to see the works of others in my life as You working in them to remove the scales from the eyes of my heart... May Your Spirit continue to work in them and in me to see Your kingdom as You have made it, and not as how I want to see it... Fill, me, Father, as You filled Your Son, so that my will and weaknesses become Your will and strength... In Jesus's Name, and for Your glory and praiseful worship...
Hope you'all're getting excited about celebrating Jesus's coming... and coming again...
In Him, with joy and gratitude and anticipation...
