Courage Now x Firehall Arts Centre x Railtown. (via Youn Park)
Vancouver-based playwright/actress Manami Hara stars in her own remarkable dramatic stage play directed by Amiel Gladstone. Her intertwined script weaves dual timelines from the past to relate the true story of one Japanese diplomat’s tireless bravery, Vice-Consul Chiune “Sempo” Sugihara (aka “the Japanese Schindler”), in saving some six-thousand Jewish lives fleeing Nazi oppression in WWII-era Lithuania.
At its core, Courage Now is told as a ghost story through memories dramatized in traumatic flashbacks balancing the sacrifices of history and their ripples through time into the lives of generational descendants. Sugihara (Ryota Kaneko) as a character is a phantom in the lives of his widow, Yukiko (Hara), and a young “Sugihara Jew”, only a child (Katherine Matlashewski) when she fled, who later visits Japan as an adult (Advah Soudack) to learn more about her past. It’s a powerful historical retelling expressed creatively to heighten its heartbreakingly real drama.
Cast: (left to right) Matlashewski, Kaneko, and Hara.
Running live on stage now until Dec. 4.

Amiel Gladstone finds Vancouver audiences particularly attuned to the quirky Craigslist vibe
Amiel Gladstone finds Vancouver audiences particularly attuned to the quirky Craigslist vibe
Amiel Gladstone has been a theatre fan for as long as he can remember. The 48–year-old playwright and director traces his earliest memories of Vancouver theatre back to the 1980s, when as a kid he went to see Ann Mortifee’s musical Reflections on Crooked Walking at the Arts Club Theatre. “I remember seeing that on Granville Island when I was in elementary school,” he recalls on the line from his…

📄 A year later, the Vancouver riots reverberate in art
Tumblr media
Driven by shock, revulsion and a deep sense of shame, Metro Vancouverites drifted downtown after last year's Stanley Cup riot. They cleaned up after the louts, and they scrawled bathroom graffiti-sized bits of philosophy onto the plywood boards that had been installed over broken glass windows of businesses such as the Bay and Future Shop. A year after the riot of June 15, 2011 – sparked by a Vancouver Canucks' Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup final – 15 of these boards are installed at the Museum of Vancouver. The exhibition, Reading the Riot Boards, adds to the canon of cultural response to riots in Vancouver, works which include theatre pieces and one of the city's most provocative works of public art.
There are earnest messages from a Grade 6 class ("There is always next year. Why riot?"); notes in other languages; a drawing of the instantly-viral kissing couple inside a big red heart. And one riot board declaration – "Creativity is the only solution to destruction!" – rings true for a number of Vancouver-based artists.
"Great art happens where there's a real sense of a large question and a large feeling of mystery and a large question of 'Who are we?' " says playwright and director Amiel Gladstone. "And I think the riot happening in the middle of our city by our own citizens really raises all of those questions."

Dark Sisters sheds light on polygamy
“Running Nov. 26 to Dec. 12 at Vancouver Playhouse, the opera’s modern sensibilities are the product of a world-class creative team. The music is written by Oscar-winning composer Nico Muhly, the libretto is by Pulitzer Prize-shortlisted playwright Stephen Karam, and it’s directed by Amiel Gladstone, whose working tagline is “theatre for people who hate theatre.” Zoe Grams 19th November 2015 http://vancouver.24hrs.ca/2015/11/19/dark-sisters-sheds-light-on-polygamy

i know no one here is as into Onegin (the musical by Veda Hille and Amiel Gladstone) as i am but i wanna talk about how Onegin’s Refusal does such a good job of making you go “oh, this guy is an asshole” and makes Once More Onegin that much more satisfying with that “I am not finished.” like talk to me about how this musical is so good at what it does and about how absolutely rad Once More Onegin is as a song
