In light of everything going on in the hockey world lately (I’m not trying to dismiss the situation, I’m using different words because this post specifically involves the hockey fandom & don’t want to take away from that), some of y’all need to learn how STOP DOING THIS (see photo).
Stop perpetuating this cycle. It’s been proven time and time before that “oh don’t stan him, stan him instead” does not work at all. These guys are not the perfect well put together people that we see portrayed by the media, by their teams and in fanfics. They all have the capacity to disappoint and be horrible. Yes, you are still allowed to like people (there’s still good people in this world and I advise against liking people who are obliviously garbage) but just don’t let your parasocial relationship take so much control in your life.
What these players are being charged for is so much bigger than your fandom and support for them. There was a person who was very likely wrongfully harmed by those players and those allegations should be taken very seriously, even if it hasn’t gone through the legal system yet.
It’s valid and it’s okay if you’re upset/hurt/feel disappointed with all of it right now. It’s a very sad, horrible, and heavy thing. This post is just to help emphasize the concept in the photo because some of yall need to get it through your heads. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk😌

some new non-comprehensive thoughts on Pride and the meaning of warmup jerseys
(the following is drawn largely from my twitter thread)
Tumblr media
honestly, i think the Panthers have like the Sharks taken the best route you can in a bad situation. and there's relief for me in that.
don't cave and undermine all the planning and work you did in order to cover for a few homophobic players. let it land on them. do not stop for their sake. thank you.
idk, personally the teams that backtrack on the jerseys entirely to cover for homophobes in their ranks leave me feeling way more angry and disillusioned than the ones where 90% of the guys are still out there in those jerseys and just one or two dipshits loudly sat out. i would have been way more disappointed by an entire organization making the decision to coddle and shelter homophobes than i am by the revelation that 2/18 players suck but the rest of them got with the program.
maybe that's a low bar. but yeah, i'm weirdly relieved that the jerseys made it to the ice at all. that so many chose to wear them.
it's like. at least some people cared enough to stick by us and not be cowards, y'know? even though dipping out was an option, somebody answered in the affirmative when asked if they'd stand with us. several somebodies did, actually.
when teams pull back entirely, we don't even get that much.
people talk about the "epidemic" of homophobia in the NHL and whether it should change how/if teams do Pride nights, but i would take an epidemic of 1-2 idiots per team sitting out of warmups over having an epidemic of all teams deciding not to do Pride at all because of those few. i would, genuinely.
are they "hijacking the events" or "taking away from the meaning of them"? idk man. these days bigots show up where queerness is visible to spout their bigot shit regardless. i have two pride flags in my hockey twitter display name, trust me, i know. at least when it happens like this, there's also people and an organization supporting us instead of just leaving us to deal with it alone.
does finding out some guys are homophobes suck? yeah. but we always knew these people existed. they're just showing themselves out loud.
and that blows. and it hurts.
but also, the entire rest of the team and the organization showed who they are tonight by not protecting or accommodating them, too.
i'm seeing so many people feel hurt by the two dumbasses who wouldn't stand beside them rather than encouraged by *every* other member of the team who *chose* not to cop out. and like. i get your hurt. but everyone else CHOSE to stand with us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
think about that for a second. sitting out was clearly an option here, if they put up enough of a stink. and yeah, two guys took that out. but *every other player* DID NOT. on the Sharks and Flyers, all but *one* guy apiece got with the program. some of them even did really meaningful community work!!
and the Panthers franchise decision-makers stood by their choice to do this, loudly and with meaningful activism attached, in FLORIDA, even when two of their own players pulled the religious protest card and copped out.
i extremely, massively respect that. i really do.
maybe i'm just a terminal optimist by nature, but. to me, what we are seeing is that when given the choice, so far the vast majority of players on these teams are still choosing to participate when given the option. when it's not taken out of their hands entirely by people upstairs.
the outliers suck, but they are just that. outliers. and i hope they feel like it.
personally, i'm not leaving this sport i love just because it's got a stubborn lingering jackass infestation. they can't have it. no, *you* move.
Tumblr media
also, shoutout to the guys who extremely voluntarily opt-in even though it's not even their team's Pride night. genuinely means something
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
people vocally being asshats is discouraging. yeah. it always is. it stings.
but all is not lost. not by far. keep your head up. and stay loud. 💜

Pride nights in Hockey survey
Hey, I'm reaching the last 48 hours of data collection for my survey, and I'm trying to get that last little surge of people before I close it at 23:59 MST on Saturday, March 25th.
I've linked my twitter post, and I'm asking if you can repost it if possible, there is absolutely no pressure to do so.
Tumblr media
So again, I am beyond grateful for all the help I've received for this, and I look forward to sharing the results with everyone once I've presented with my team.

Hot Girls Hockey continues to prove why they are my favourite hockey podcast.
While the news of this case has me feeling confused, angry, and disgusted, this conversation gives me hope for a better future for hockey. I truly believe that that future is worth investing in. Hockey can be for everyone. I’m so grateful for Hot Girls Hockey (and so many other amazing groups, like Black Girl Hockey Club) for making spaces where hockey is accessible, safe, and fun for those who have historically been excluded. We all deserve that. We deserve to assert our right to these spaces, even when moments like these may make us question our safety and belonging within them.
Please, as this case continues to unfold and as we continue to reckon with the harm that is committed by current hockey culture, never forget that we can and will do better. We have to. For the SA survivor who brought forth this case and for ourselves. It’s our responsibility. Let’s never stop having these conversations. Let’s never stop holding elite hockey accountable. Let’s never stop protecting and showing up for each other.
Hockey is meaningful because we get to share it in community. I hope we never forget the power that we all hold.

looking at all of the beats tweeting about how they’re worried about a lockout and shaking my head.
good. this is what they should have. i hope they can negotiate a CBA with better provisions for bodily autonomy in medical procedures. if it takes a lockout to do that i’ll gladly put hockey to the side while we’re waiting.
edit: not so sure about this now after reading about the jacobs thing but…

Did anyone else see on twitter where a girl at a Canucks game got harassed by a dude during the game? Shit like that makes me afraid to go to games 😖 This sports culture needs to change asap.
(If anyone is interested I’ll send the link to her tweet)

Another thing I’m going to note is dismissing and invalidating a victim’s experience because it involves someone (ex. a player on a team that you like) is disgusting. Like I’ve said before and will continue to say, you gain nothing by supporting abusers. Think about the people in your life who could be potential survivors of abuse or sexual assault and don’t want to come forward because of they don’t want their experience to be dismissed or invalidated. Believe victims, believe survivors💜

it's so rich that the same people at sn who showed support and claimed solidarity with ailish when she spoke about her experience, seem to have no problem hyping up players that have committed the exact same crimes/perpetuate the same hockey culture they claim they're against

Here’s a reminder that the NHL is not a legal or judicial system… them conducting investigations means nothing

I just thought this thread was very interesting and sums up everything completely
holland checks off all the boxes; old, white, man. he doesn’t know a thing about a fair trial and “having trust in the legal system” is so incredibly naive and privilege-based it’s sickening. he has no clue how hard and painful it is to go through a trial when it’s literally his word against yours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the fact that he chooses to just fully trust someone he’s known for three hours is just…..wow. also he chooses to not even comment on skill (bc we all know Jake has none, so he can’t even use that as an excuse, so he’s risking his career on dirt)
