Together
Masterpost | AO3 Link
Fandom / Genre: Stardew Valley / Fluff
Pairing: Elliott/Sebastian
Warnings: None!
Prompt: Requested by @incendiarybomb
Prompt list 19, #6 || “I gave up smoking for you, you little shit, be grateful.” with Elliott x Sebastian?
Note: Aghsgjshds this took so much longer to get to than I meant!! So so sorry for the delay, 2023 ended up being a terrible writing year for me. Hopefully you still enjoy it, I definitely had fun writing it, and will likely be exploring more with this pairing in the future!
Summary:
It's Sebastian's turn to pick where their next date is to be, and he refuses to tell Elliott anything beyond the best way to get there is on the motorcycle. Elliott doesn't want to take the bike. He's glad they did.
Elliott stared at Sebastian. Sebastian stared right back.
“No.”
“Please?”
“Absolutely not.”
“C’mon!”
Sebastian pouted, leaning further onto his motorcycle. He looked up at Elliott through his bangs and- yep, there were the sad eyes. Elliott broke eye contact before he could feel the full force of his boyfriend’s puppy eyes.
He looked over the motorcycle again and cringed at just the idea of getting on it.
“Just one ride. We won’t even go that far!” Sebastian pleaded.
“It’s just- motorcycle accidents are far more likely to happen than car accidents- a higher rate of motorcyclists get injured each year than drivers.”
“Just because the rate is high doesn’t mean we’ll get into an accident. I keep my bike in excellent condition, I’m safe on the road, and we’ll be taking safety precautions. Besides, neither of us own a car.”
Elliott sighed. “Can’t we just take the bus, or borrow someone’s car?”
“Unless you wanna try convincing Lewis to let me drive his old truck, or spend a bus ride with Pam driving with at least an hour walk after, then no.” Sebastian finally let the puppy eyes disappear, sighing himself as he wrapped his arms across his chest. “It was my turn to pick our date spot, and this is the best way to get there.”
Elliott still hesitated. Sebastian looked away and his shoulders sagged when another minute passed by in silence. Elliott’s heart constricted at the dejected and genuinely hurt look on Sebastian’s face.
“Y’know what, never-”
“Fine.”
His head snapped up and Sebastian was startled when Elliott took a few long strides to stand in front of him and the bike.
“What?”
“I said fine,” Elliott said. He pulled Sebastian’s arms away from his body and took Sebastian’s hands in his, giving them a squeeze and him a nervous smile. “You’re right- if this is the best way to get to wherever you’ve chosen our date to be, then we should take it.”
Sebastian still frowned, suddenly seeming unsure himself. “Why are you suddenly agreeing?”
“Truthfully? You looked so disappointed at the prospect of not taking the bike, and I cannot bear seeing you looking so sorrowful.” Sebastian snorted and Elliott leaned in to bump their heads lightly. “I will admit though… I’ve never been on a motorcycle, and the prospect of getting on one, no matter how much I trust you, is…” Elliott looked away and pulled back slightly, sighing as he trailed off.
It was Sebastian who squeezed their hands this time, and when Elliott looked back at him, he was smiling gently in a way that had become more common over the past two years.
“It’s okay to be nervous,” he said. “Little secret, I was scared shitless the first dozen or so times I got on a bike on the road. You… probably won’t feel comfortable on it after this one trip. But, I can say that over time, it gets less scary and it becomes… exhilarating. And just… I want to share that with you. I…”
Sebastian paused and took a deep breath before continuing. “I care about you a lot, y’know? I wouldn’t offer to take you on the bike unless I was sure you’d be safe.”
Some of the tension bled out of Elliott at the admissions, and he smiled gently with a slight tilt of his head down at Sebastian. Sebastian returned the smile with one just a bit more sure than the ones shared previously.
It quickly morphed into a smirk. “Besides, I gave up smoking for you, you little shit. You owe me.”
It was said in a teasing tone and it startled a laugh out of Elliott. He had to pull away from Sebastian, whose smirk was more of a shit-eating grin now as he watched Elliott recover from the sudden bout of laughter.
“Fair enough,” Elliott mused once he could control his voice again. He propped his hands on his hips and looked at the bike with a determined expression. “Alright then! Tell me what to do.”
-
Truthfully, Elliott kept his eyes squeezed shut the entire ride. Both the one Sebastian did around the town to get familiar with Elliott’s weight at his back, Elliott pressed close to him, especially since the writer towered over Sebastian by a good half a foot. But the shorter ride around town was enough for Sebastian to feel completely comfortable riding the bike out of town, and Elliott felt safe enough to go the distance.
The travel time passed by in a blur, really, and Elliott wouldn’t have realized they had stopped if Sebastian hadn’t nudged him backward off him a little.
When he opens his eyes, Elliott cannot contain the gasp. In his peripheral, he sees Sebastian smile, but Elliott cannot tear his gaze away from the view that Sebastian had driven them to.
Zuzu City is in the distance, a sea of black glittering yellow fading into the night sky where streetlights and headlights and illuminated rooms turn to stars sparkling thousands of miles away. Between them on the cliff and the distant city is a forest, one Elliott has seen a few times on both bus and train on his scarce trips to and from Pelican Town. In the cover of night, it is nothing more than a shadow swallowing everything below them whole, and yet Elliott feels anything but fear when gazing at it. All the possibilities of what could be lurking…
He’s pulled from his thoughts when Sebastian slips off the bike, and he helps Elliott climb off it as well. Sebastian doesn’t let go of his hand as they take off their helmets and leave them with the bike to approach the cliff’s edge, and he doesn’t let go as they sit and dangle their feet off the side.
They sit and watch for what could be minutes or an hour, Elliott really isn’t sure, but he doesn’t mind one bit. It’s comfortable silence as they gaze upon the land stretching before them. Sebastian’s thumb eventually begins drawing circles on the back of Elliott’s hand, but he still doesn’t say anything at first.
When he does finally say something, Elliott has to blink and focus, Sebastian’s voice muffled slightly only because he had become so lost in thought. When Elliott turns to Sebastian, the man is chuckling softly and squeezes his hand.
Elliott returns the squeeze and smiles sheepishly. “Apologies, my dear,” he says, quietly, so as to not disturb the peace that has settled around them. “Could you repeat what you said?”
“I said, ‘What do you think?’”
“It’s beautiful,” Elliott says, looking back to the city. “And yet… I’m also filled with a strange sense of sadness. A… a haunting sorrow, if you will, though I cannot place why.”
Sebastian nods, shifting a little closer to Elliott. “I feel the same way.” He tilts his head as he too looks back at the city.
“I used to feel trapped in Pelican Town,” Sebastian says after another minute of silence lapsed between them. “I thought I’d try to leave as soon as I could. Hell, I was planning on doing that. But then… but then we started to talk, and get to know each other. And then you asked me out on a date and… and I haven’t felt so trapped anymore.”
Sebastian turns to look at Elliott fully, and Elliott shifts to give Sebastian his attention. It’s not a hard task, Elliott would give Sebastian the world if he could.
“I know we haven’t dated for that long,” Sebastian began, and he attempted to wring his hands together before realizing that he couldn’t, still holding one of Elliott’s. He grabbed Elliott’s other hand then, twisting their fingers so they were interlocked, and Elliott complied easily, squeezing Sebastian’s hands once his fidgeting had settled a bit. It settled more after the squeeze, at least Elliott suspected it was that, because he was also smiling reassuringly but Sebastian wasn’t looking at his face.
“It’s only been two years, but… in that time, I’ve grown to care about you so much, grown to love you so much. Your writing, your extravagant speech, your passion, and your love. I’ve grown to cherish your nagging and pestering about bad habits,” Sebastian let a teasing smirk grace his face, glancing up at Elliott as he said it. Elliott chuckled while his heart beat a mile a minute. Sebastian let a few seconds pass before he continued.
“I never… I didn’t think I’d find anyone in the valley who could make me feel this way, and yet… here we are.”
“Here we are,” Elliott agreed when Sebastian didn’t continue for a moment. Sebastian was finally holding his gaze, and Elliott let all the adoration he felt for the man in front of him bleed into his expression. Sebastian seemed to melt under the intensity of the gaze, relaxing at whatever he found within Elliott’s eyes, and finally he began talking again.
“Elliott… I… I can’t imagine what my life would be like, anymore, without you in it. And so, I was wondering…” Sebastian withdrew his hands from Elliott’s, twisting around slightly and Elliott tilted to see what Sebastian was grabbing. From his back pocket he pulled out something, though Sebastian kept it cupped in his hands and out of Elliott’s view as he turned back around. His cheeks were pink. He took a deep breath. But when he opened his mouth, words seemed to fail him.
After a moment of struggling to find the words, Sebastian seemed to make up his mind, shaking his head and opening his hands.
From it a blue shell slipped past his fingers, dangling off a thin blue chain. Sebastian held it up between them, his face dusted an even darker shade of red. It took Elliott a second to realize what was happening, what was really, truly happening.
He’d been told of the Mermaid’s Pendant before, just a month or so after he and Sebastian had come out about their relationship - Mayor Lewis hadn’t been subtle once he had noticed the local writer and the town’s renowned “emo” getting much closer. So Elliott knew the significance, and the romantic in him found it a wonderful tradition that, if all went well, he’d love to partake in. He would be a liar if he said he hadn’t imagined giving and receiving it before. To actually be receiving it from Sebastian, however…
His heart swelled in his chest, beating rapidly as he processed just what, exactly, Sebastian was asking of him.
To spend the rest of their lives together. To build their lives together. To move forward, together.
Elliott couldn’t find the words, and he didn’t know when he had looked away from the pendant but he was now looking at Sebastian’s face, unaware and not caring about whatever expression he was wearing. His vision was misty, but Elliott made no effort to reign in or release the tears. He just looked at this wonderful, quiet, and caring man who had had such a profound impact on his life, and soaked in the fact that he wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
It took Sebastian’s face taking on an apprehensive expression to kick Elliott into the realization that he should say something, anything.
But again, the words were failing him.
So, with hands that he hadn’t realized were shaking slightly, he cupped Sebastian’s face gently. “Oh, Sebastian…” he managed to get out.
Sebastian went rigid in his hold, his gaze locked on Elliott’s face, as though trying to look for the answer to his unasked question in Elliott’s very soul. What answer he found must have conveyed everything Elliott couldn’t figure out how to say, because Sebastian relaxed and leaned forward into Elliott’s space.
He rested his forehead against Elliott’s, Elliott’s hands falling away to Sebastian’s shoulders, then arms, then waist. His eyes were closed, but Elliott couldn’t stop staring.
Sebastian brought his hands up, and Elliott watched them pass his head and the pendant dangle above his chest. Sebastian settled his wrists on Elliott’s shoulders, ready to clasp the necklace into place.
“Yes?” Sebastian asked, his voice soft and so, so quiet. He’d opened his eyes again by the time Elliott looked away from the pendant and back to his face.
“Yes,” Elliott said, and he closed the gap between them just as Sebastian closed the clasp.

Wolrdbuilding in Five
I was tagged by @elsie-writes here! Thank you so much!
Rules: Post 3-5 images of a setting in your story and talk a bit about it!

I think I should've picked And May the Moon - it is much more focused on the worldbuilding - but oh well. I was looking at cool hanfu on 小红书 so it had to be Mirage of Spring.
Its plot is set in Tiānshāngōu, mostly in its, hm, capital - Tuánjié. Tiānshāngōu likes to call itself an empire, even though it is rather small and not really united. Originally it was a bunch of daoist villages which had common army and foreign policy. The villages grew with time, started mining gems and got inspired by neighbouring countries when it comes to governing. Anyway, the current Tiānshāngōu consist of four semi-autonomic cities: Tuánjié, Dài, Liào and Rú with Tuánjié being the residence of the emperor. The country is extremely prosperous but paralysed by tensions in the internal politics.
The first and second photo symbolise Tiānshāngōu's wealth and loneliness. The third is the most literally presenting the setting. The fourth and fifth are about a useless fight, burning and stomping over the peace without a reason.

Update!
Everything on this blog will be moved to @amberskywrites!
This blog is going to be deleted at the start of January, so if you're still interested in the stuff on this blog, I suggest following that blog (or @ambersky-art if you're here for the OC art)
This was previously my writblr, but I wasn't liking how it turned out, and I didn't really like having my original stuff and fanfics in different places when I focused more on one. So! I'm making the fanfic blog into a general writblr.

Isulle, the Benevolent
Goddess of the Harvest, patron of merchants and the hearth
The youngest of the Sisters, Isulle raised the island of Arla from the depths of the Lucent Sea so the Wanderers could once again walk on dry land. She's far more hands on then her others sisters; during the birth of Arla, she would often walk among the Wanderers and lend her gifts and blessings to aid them as they worked to make their new island a home.
Most merchants across Arla have either a painting or a statue of Isulle somewhere in their shop, usually close to the entrance. They believe she cultivates growth, both in crops and business. Homes also have a small statue of Isulle as well, though it is custom to keep the statue of Isulle near their fireplace. While all the Sisters watch over the people of Arla, it is believed that Isulle pays careful attention to homes, safeguarding them from outside harm.
She is symbolized by the breeze dancing through the grass, the smell of the earth after rain and the warmth of sunlight against your skin. In art, she is often portrayed in the fields, dirt smudged on her cheek and focus on the ground blooming around her.
And in the center of everything stood a statue of the youngest of the Three Sisters, Isulle the Protector. She stood a good foot or two above the crowd, a comforting presence. With golden hair tumbling over her shoulders, a crown woven from wildflowers and fern leaves perched on her brow, and dark eyes looking up at the sky, Isulle looked at peace. From where Helen stands, she can see a small pile of items gathered at the base of the statue - offerings, most likely, to be taken back to a temple at the end of the night’s festivities.
&
Isulle tilted her head to the side, sending golden hair cascading over her shoulder. Her dark eyes glittered with amusement. “What do you think, sisters? Shall we honor his request?”

WIP Line Chain Game
I was tagged by @amberskywrites @dontcrywrite and @notwritinganyflufftoday so because of that I'm going to do the last three lines in one post.
Rules: Write the latest line from your wip and tag as many people as there are words in the line.
The girl wanders from the town that has been built from the ground in the distance, a bump on the horizon, backlit by setting sun like a halo of wrath.
She has been tense, waiting for a siege to start march, for humans to come with their fire and their fury and burn her just for living. What arrives, though, is a girl with a basket and round face and soft hands; a human Keithia does not believe could be a threat.
That's... 82 words, oh boy. Tumblr started breaking once I got to the mid forties, so I'm tagging 41 people, 2 for each word. I hope that's alright.

hi eve !! kimchi and egg drop soup pls :)
hey rose! thanks for the ask!!
Kimchi Soup: Do you write best in first, second, or third POV? 3rd person. sometimes I struggle to get into characters heads with first, and it makes it harder to switch between povs. also I write mostly in that so practice makes it easier
Egg Drop Soup: Do you have any author/writeblr recommendations? tagging makes me nervous but here we go
@feywhisper @pens-swords-stuff @cloverfieldsforever @dumbbookshit @sleepyowlwrites @ellierenae @enchanted-lightning-aes @strangerays @vampire-with-a-pen @justapotatowriter @amberskywrites @ashen-crest @writing-is-a-martial-art @did-i-do-this-write @pagesofcursive and you ofc
this is mostly based on vibes as I don't read nearly as much of all their writing as I should, but they are all cool and amazing people
also angie sage is a classic for me with septimus heap, as is rick riordan, and I recently read legendborn by tracy deonn

Eternal
Chapter 21 - And They're Off
Chapter 1 | Chapter 20 | Chapter 22 || Masterpost | AO3 Link | FF.net Link
Fandom / Genre: Nanatsu no Taizai (Seven Deadly Sins) / Canon-Divergent and Hurt/Comfort
Pairings: Meliodas/Elizabeth, Zeldris/Gelda, Meliodas & Zeldris & Elizabeth & Gelda
Overall Story Warnings: Angst with a happy ending, Canon-typical violence, Canonical character death, Canon temporary character death, Cursed characters, Lmk if I need to add anything else!
Chapter Warnings: None, lmk if there’s anything I need to add!
Story Summary:
Eternal…
life.
reincarnation.
silence.
and chains.
For 3,000 long and painful years, these four have been doing all they can to lift their curses. They have failed, again and again and again. With only a sliver of hope left, they try once more.
-
Or, what if Zeldris accepted Meliodas’ offer to go with him 3,000 years ago?
The clearing was quiet, barren, and utterly too normal for any of their likings. It was impossible to feel even a hint of magic emanating from the space that was supposedly the entrance to the Necropolis.
“Well then!” Meliodas said, turning to face the group at large. Everyone was gathered in a semi-circle, minus the two kids who’d given them the instructions, still standing and just watching from the edge of the clearing. “Does anyone have someone in mind to think about?”
Zeldris swept his gaze over everyone else when no one said a word. He wouldn’t bother. There wasn’t anyone he could imagine fondly that would be in the Necropolis, knowing the few people he’d cared most for in his life were either around him now or simply just not quite dead. There wouldn’t be a point in trying to remember anyone.
Finally, Elizabeth piped up about trying to remember her mother. Meliodas’ expression tightened minutely, but to Zeldris’ relief, he relaxed once Hawk asked if she even had memories of her mother and she deflated, her hopeful expression shuttering away as she shook her head. While Zeldris felt a twinge of guilt at the face she made, he’d be a liar if he said he was disappointed she remembered nothing or relieved when Diane chimed in about someone she used to know, but she didn’t elaborate. She, Elizabeth, Hawk, and Meliodas then devolved into a debate about ghosts and whether or not accessing the Necropolis would lead to them having to interact with ghosts. Zeldris started tuning them out.
A glance at Gelda showed she was observing the others as well, though her eyes were trained on King and Ban, a tilt to her head. Zeldris, too, turned his attention to the two Sins and noted that neither seemed to be paying any attention to anyone.
King seemed more aware than Ban, his brows creasing as he stared toward the ground. Probably trying to open the Necropolis, then, but apparently not succeeding. It took Zeldris a few moments of pondering that he probably shouldn’t have needed to think of who the fairy might possibly be trying to remember. Consequently, the realization is what brought his attention to focus on Ban.
Ban had a rather blank look on his face. Zeldris’ chest tightened, his hearts suddenly feeling like they were starting to be squeezed.
The Sin of Greed was lost in his thoughts, his memories. Zeldris had no doubt what he could be thinking of, what he was reliving. He’d seen Meliodas in the exact same place too many times to count, too many times too many.
He was hit, suddenly, with the realization that seeing anyone wear that blank stare hurt.
Zeldris hadn’t noticed anything changing until the conversation between the others died out. Filling the silence was the wind, picking up speed and swirling flowers that weren’t there moments ago into the air.
It took a moment for anyone to react, too stunned at the sudden sight of a meadow of pink flowers to say anything. But then Diane exclaimed and Ban startled, blinking and finally looking around and clearly still not entirely back with them, still very much there, and the new meadow was filled with noise once more.
“Good luck finding them!” One of the kids chirped above the rising wind.
“And thanks for the food, mister!” Said the other with a wide grin, and then they were gone, obscured by the whirlwind of flowers surrounding the group.
Zeldris barely had time to process as from one moment to the next his vision was obscured by flowers to instead being obscured by bright reflective light.
--
Meliodas squinted once the world finally stopped spinning, the light reflected from the crystals surrounding them far too bright after suddenly seeing only darkness. He heard a hiss not far off and assumed it was Zeldris. Gelda he knew was okay from the shade that enveloped him a moment later, the vampire managing to get her bearings quicker than the rest of her family. He’d have to thank her later.
Blinking the spots away more easily now, Meliodas was able to take stock of everything and everyone.
They were in a land of smooth green and blue stone, around them the walls to a maze of crystals standing tall, but not tall enough to be considered an issue. Most were at Ban’s height, and with Diane, they’d really have no problems.
The others were recovering from the sudden environment change too, it seemed, scrubbing at their eyes or squinting around in hopes of adjusting their eyes to the light. He didn’t have to wait long before an excited gasp escaped Elizabeth as she looked around, and Hawk whistled lowly. Diane had a grin forming on her face, and it was practically infectious until she glanced down and noticed the three shrouded in darkness.
“Hey! No fair, Gelda! You didn’t shield any of the rest of us from the light!” She exclaimed, hands on her hips as Gelda dismissed the shadowy shield.
Gelda smiled apologetically at the giant. Sorry, she signed, They were closest and it was instinct. Diane huffed, practically pouting, and Meliodas couldn’t help the chuckle. Gelda glanced at him and shared the same amused smile before looking back up at Diane. Next time you’ll be the first I shield. Deal?
Diane made a decent effort to remain annoyed but caved quickly enough in the face of Gelda’s offer. “Deal!”
“Well, now we’re in the Necropolis,” Meliodas said, everyone’s attention flicking to him. “We should get a start on seeing if one of the others-” Meliodas startled when Ban jumped into motion, dashing off after some lights. Barely a second later King was flying after him, neither paying a glance to anyone else.
“What… just happened?” Hawk asked, staring after the two Sins long gone.
Zeldris sighed, and when Meliodas looked at his younger brother, he was met with a familiar tired and saddened look directed down the path Ban and King had run. Normally, said look was directed at him, and Meliodas hummed uncertainly to Hawk’s question as he tried to decipher the look.
He couldn’t help gaping at his own stupidity when it hit him why those two would chase after a spirit here. He closed his mouth with a click and shook his head. Unpack that later. For now…
“They’ll be alright,” he said, offering his most encouraging smile. A second later, Zeldris and Gelda were nodding.
“We’ll find them before we leave, or we’ll see them after we leave back in the meadow. We have a limited amount of time in here, after all,” Zeldris added.
“Right!” Meliodas clapped his hands together. “For now, we should be enough to try finding if any of us are here. Ban and King’ll be on the lookout too, I’m sure, so how about we head this way?” He gestured in the opposite direction that the two had run. If they had chased after who he thinks they did, the two Sins didn’t need the rest of them intruding on that conversation.
And so the group of six headed off.

"Hey."
"Hey Erin... How was today?"
"Today's gone as well as yesterday... Dani still hasn't left his room. But he did let Taylor and Jeremiah inside again."
"Has he? That's good."
"He misses you a lot. We all do."
"I know."
"Briar broke down today. Taylor said it was a panic attack, and it took almost an hour for him to calm down."
"..."
"He hasn't been the only one."
"Oh?"
"I told you to be more careful..."
"You're changing the subject."
"I begged you to not get involved with this one. I begged you to once, let others fight for you instead of with you."
"Erin..."
"You were always so reckless... And so lucky.... Why... Why did your luck have to run out? Why'd you have to go and die on us?"
"..."
"I'm sorry..."
Erin sobs, covering his mouth as his shoulders shake and he hangs his head. And Evanna watches as the one person she cherished above all else shatters before her.

Eternal
Chapter 1 - Girl in the Armor
Chapter 2 || Masterpost || AO3 Link || FF.net Link
Fandom / Genre: Nanatsu no Taizai (Seven Deadly Sins) / Canon-Divergent and Hurt/Comfort
Pairings: Meliodas/Elizabeth, Zeldris/Gelda, Meliodas & Zeldris & Elizabeth & Gelda
Overall Story Warnings: Angst with a happy ending, Canon-typical violence, Canonical character death, Canon temporary character death, Cursed characters, lmk if I need to add anything else!
It’s a busy day for the trio.
Zeldris is in the kitchen, cooking away because there was no way he was going to let Meliodas poison their customers again. Gelda glided around tables easily, bringing drinks to the bar to be refilled and smiling at the drunk guests as they laughed amongst themselves. And Meliodas is at the bar, refilling the drinks and chatting with a few lone customers who had wandered over to him.
Zeldris was starting to feel a little too hot in the kitchen, cursing his eldest brother under his breath for not making it any bigger or putting in at least one window. Gelda’s feet were beginning to hurt after a few hours, and she was considering just ditching the shoes – or the outfit entirely, the tavern’s uniform drawing some unwanted comments her way despite her brother-in-law’s threats to the patrons staring. And Meliodas was itching to move out of the bar area, beginning to feel trapped behind the wooden counter he put there.
Dealing with it all was made just a little easier, just a little bit, with the help of one talking pig.
Hawk gladly ate the scraps thrown at whoever tried to hit on Gelda as she worked and helped her serve some of the tables once the tavern really started to fill up. Meliodas and Hawk exchanged the occasional friendly insult or threat, which may have been the only reason Meliodas hadn’t booked it away from the bar by now. And Zeldris was just glad that he didn’t have to worry too much about his wife’s wellbeing as he cooked – though if Hawk purposely dropped food onto one of the customers for making certain comments, Zeldris said nothing and just passed him some extra scraps.
-
It was just past noon when things started to get interesting.
Or rather, it should have been interesting.
It was interesting for the customers and terrifying for Hawk.
And as for Zeldris, Gelda, and Meliodas? It was boring as hell.
The door slammed open, a young man gasping for breath with wide eyes, trembling as he stumbled into the tavern. He drew in everyone’s interest immediately.
Gelda was the first to approach him, listening to his mutterings about some ‘rust knight’ he had seen. She put a hand on his shoulder, startling him out of his shaken daze, and guided him to a table that had some room left. She squeezed his shoulder lightly before making a gesture to Meliodas, who instantly fixed up a drink for the man.
Most drunk, other customers went back to their own conversations as the people at the table questioned the young man, reassuring him that the Rust Knight wasn’t real, just a tale told to scare kids to bed.
It would’ve worked to calm the man, who began chuckling along and sipping his own alcohol, but then someone decided to mention the sins.
The Seven Deadly Sins.
“There’s rumor that that’s who the Rust Knight is, one of ‘em traitors.”
“I thought all the sins were dead, though? There’s no way people like them could just go about living their lives after all they’ve done.”
“Some believe that. That’s probably the case, but can we really be sure?”
“W… What do you mean?”
“Well, those posters over there are updated every year!”
“Yeah, they wouldn’t be redone if the kingdom knew if any of them were dead.”
“They still could be dead, though!”
“If one of them is the Rust Knight, which one do you think it’d be?”
The trio began to tune out the table theorizing about the sins. It wasn’t any useful information, nothing new and just ideas of people who really didn’t know much of what they were talking about. Besides, they had looked into the Rust Knight theory. There weren’t even confirmations it existed.
Hawk, however, was enraptured, listening despite growing more worried as the table considered all the different sins and their terrifying capabilities, debating which one would best fit the description of the Rust Knight.
When it started to die down, finally, and Hawk had a moment to relax and return to helping Gelda, there was a long and very loud creak. Gelda paused, closest to the door and her heightened hearing making the sound much louder than it probably was. The scrape of metal on metal filled the air, heavy thumps as whoever approached. The tavern had gone relatively quiet now, everyone inside watching the door carefully.
Zeldris slipped out of the kitchen for a moment, hand on his sword. Gelda glanced to her own weapon, hung on the nearby wall at the moment, and considered retrieving it. Meliodas remained relaxed, or as relaxed as he had been five minutes ago, but he was frowning as everyone just… waited.
Soon, a massive figure loomed in the doorway, the grating sound of the rusted armor halting. It was filled with the echoed groans from whoever was inside, words too muffled for even Gelda to make out anything clearly.
Then, it moved forward once more, pushing past the door and into the tavern.
Shrieks overrode the noise coming from the giant, armor-clad figure. People screaming at the top of their lungs about the Rust Knight, about the Seven Deadly Sins, about how it was going to kill them all as they scrambled for the exit.
It would have been silent, if Hawk wasn’t whimpering behind the counter with Meliodas and Zeldris and if the armor wasn’t trembling with each heavy step.
Meliodas hopped over the counter, crossing his arms and a light glare on his face. It was more of a pout, actually, at having pretty much all his customers ditch without paying.
He opened his mouth to say something, but he never got the chance to.
The armor swayed, stumbled slightly as though dizzy, and collapsed.
The helmet rolled off, and the three people froze at the sight.
Hawk bounded out from behind the counter in confusion, staring at the person in the armor. He didn’t seem to notice the looks exchanged between the other three, tilting his head. “It’s a girl!”
-
Meliodas took a deep breath, leaning against the wall and refusing to look away from the floor. Eventually Zeldris took up the spot beside him, not daring to touch his brother just yet. Zeldris wasn’t sure if Meliodas would want to be touched, what with who was now lying in the bed of the tavern’s spare room upstairs. Instead, he merely watched as Gelda looked after the girl, making sure she wasn’t suffering from anything life threatening.
Hawk was watching as well, confused as to why Meliodas wasn’t getting involved and why they were all silent as Gelda worked. Well, he was used to Gelda’s silence. But silence from the other two was rare, so rare in fact that Hawk couldn’t remember a time it had ever actually been silent with the two around.
Gelda finally stepped away from the girl, nodding to the brothers as she left, probably to go clean up downstairs. She motioned for Hawk to follow her, let the other two be for now. Hawk followed with just a little hesitation.
Zeldris waited until he could barely hear Gelda and Hawk, then he turned to his brother, concerned frown adoring his face.
“Meliodas?”
There was silence for a moment, and Zeldris moved so he was in front of Meliodas instead of beside him. He stood between Meliodas and the girl, shielding her from view if Meliodas decided to look up.
“Meliodas.”
Meliodas took a deep, shaky breath. “Maybe… Maybe it’s just a coincidence.”
Zeldris’ frown deepened. “… What?”
“Maybe- Maybe it’s just- maybe it isn’t her. Just looks like her. There are plenty of people with long, straight, silver hair. Plenty of girls with that kind of hair. And pale skin. And. And looking just like that. A coincidence.”
Zeldris finally noticed Meliodas trembling, and he reached out slowly, as to not startle his brother. Meliodas instantly grabbed his hands, squeezing tight before letting go when Zeldris drew him into a hug.
“We both know it has never been a coincidence.”
Meliodas whimpered, burying his face in Zeldris’ shoulder. He didn’t cry, not right now. But he shook in Zeldris’ arms, clinging to the brother who was stuck with him for who knows how long like Zeldris was a lifeline. Zeldris squeezed him tight, only letting go when he felt Meliodas start to withdraw.
Meliodas took another deep breath, and another, and another. He didn’t stop until he had his breathing under control and his hands were steady.
He moved around Zeldris, and sat on the edge of the bed, looking down at the girl with a frown of his own.
“She’s a long way from the castle…” he mumbled.
“And with no guards,” Zeldris pointed out. “Maybe she snuck away?”
Meliodas hummed. “Maybe. But why would she do that? And in that kind of armor, too, I haven’t seen something like it in ages.”
“Well, we can ask once she wakes up.” Zeldris approached him and squeezed Meliodas’ shoulder, offering the best reassuring smile he could. It was more pained than anything, though, as his eyes flickered back to the girl. “And…”
“And hope that she’s not here because it started.”
Zeldris nodded. “Yeah.” He inhaled slowly. “I’m going to check on Gelda and Hawk. Just call if you need anything.”
He closed the door quietly after leaving, slumping against it for a moment. He could hear Meliodas moving around in the room, the sound of a chair dragging against wood filling the silence. Zeldris sighed and pushed himself away from the door, travelling downstairs to find his wife and the trio’s talking animal companion.
