That Arizona sky burning in your eyes
You look at me and, babe, I wanna catch on fire
It's buried in my soul like California gold
You found the light in me that I couldn't find
So when I'm all choked up
But I can't find the words
Every time we say goodbye
Baby, it hurts
When the sun goes down
And the band won't play
I'll always remember us this way
Lovers in the night
Poets tryna write
We don't know how to rhyme
But damn we try
But all I really know
You're where I wanna go
The part of me that's you will never die
So when I'm all choked up
But I can't find the words
Every time we say goodbye
Baby, it hurts
When the sun goes down
And the band won't play
I'll always remember us this way
Oh, yeah
I don't wanna be just a memory, baby, yeah
Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo
Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo
Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo hoo hooooooooo
So when I'm all choked up
But I can't find the words
Every time we say goodbye
Baby, it hurts
When the sun goes down
And the band won't play
I'll always remember us this way, way, yeah
When you look at me
And the whole world fades
I'll always remember us this way
The first YA to make me feel something in a while x
“You may be born into a family, but you walk into friendships. Some you’ll discover you should put behind you. Others are worth every risk.”
“...stories can make someone immortal as long as someone else is willing to listen.”
“I cannot tell you how you will survive without me. I cannot tell you how to mourn me. I cannot convince you to not feel guilty if you forget the anniversary of my death, or if you realize days or weeks or months have gone by without thinking about me. I just want you to live.”
I would say it was a relatable book - despite not knowing when i’ll be dead, fortunately. but the themes (teenage years, life, love, lgbtq+, friendship) were portrayed very nicely and naturally in this novel, instead of in a preaching way which generally happens in Life/Death novels.
Love the way Rufus was portrayed as bisexual, his character was not written as a rigid masc/femme queer as in many books confined to the LGBTQ+ genre, and his courage and softness were able to coexist.
Another thing I loved was Mateo’s character development - he was so wimpy and afraid to Live; but towards the end he tried out extreme sports! disobeyed traffic rules! Just living - for himself, for Rufus, for his dad. The relationship between Mateo and his father was written beautifully, their love for each other - his dad raising him by himself, Mateo taking care of comatose father. He was the first person, even the first thing he thought of when he received his death alert🧡.
“I kiss the guy who brought me to life on the day we’re going to die.”
My favourite thing about this book is the links between the events and the people - it shows how our actions, selfish or unselfish, could affect others without us knowing, even leading to matters of life and death.
