Best Day of his life

My dear little @fandomfaeryreads has also sent in something. With the help of @laurfilijames who is always my soundboard and inspiration, I've come up with the following...

“I truly hope that you’ll find someone to accompany you to my wedding,” Fíli grinned, raking his broad fingers through the soft, golden beard covering his shapely jaw. “We wouldn’t want everyone to be worried about you, would we?”

Kíli shot his brother a doubtful look over the breakfast table and shook his head. “It’s more surprising that you’d find someone willing to marry you, given that you’re boorish, smelly, and an award-winning idiot.”

“Oh, someone is worried, huh?” Fíli teased, leaning back confidently. Ever since his girlfriend had accepted his proposal he was – he had to admit this much himself – a little cocky.

“Never,” his younger brother shot back and pushed aside his half-full plate petulantly.

The unnerving grin on Fíli’s face made him want to punch him, and Kíli was sure that his new sister-in-law would not at all appreciate it if her groom sported a black eye in their wedding pictures.

Stewing in his own annoyance, he threw open the French windows and stalked out into the narrow garden; he still loved the house his mother had raised them in, and he dreaded the moment Fíli would move out for good to set up his own household with his wife.

“Hey Kí,” a soft voice resounded and, instinctively, Kíli turned to the wooden lattice that separated their plot from the adjacent garden.

“Hi Bean,” he greeted and leaned his cheek against a gap so that she could press a giggling kiss onto it. “My sweet saviour! Now that I see you, my day has become 100% better.”

Kíli chuckled; her and her mother had moved into the neighbouring house when he had been a young teenager and – with all the humour of their immature minds – he and his brother had taken to calling the young girl “Bean” on account of her being short and laughably fragile compared to their hardy boyhood.

Over the years, the good-natured witness of their dumbest antics and most grievous accidents had grown into a charming young woman though whose demure beauty had attracted more than one suitor. Kíli had chased them all away in more or less discreet ways.

Unfortunately for him, Bean did not take him seriously when he tried to flirt with her; she seemed to stubbornly mistake his earnest admiration for a callous continuation of his adolescent taunts.

“What happened?” she asked, taking in his sour face and the dark cloud of dismay marring his usually so cheerful visage.

“Oh, Fí is being an ass. Say, what do you do tomorrow?”

“I am going to your brother’s wedding, as are you,” Bean replied calmly, cocking her head in a way that made her hair cascade like a curtain of translucent silk over her slender shoulder.

“Would you like to go with me?” Kíli asked, surprised by the sudden feeling of tightness in his chest.

“I thought you’d share a car with Fí. Don’t you have to be there earlier? Well, either way, I’d be delighted to be of help,” Bean replied with a bright smile.

“Yes. No. No, that is not what I meant. Do you want to go as my date?”

She blinked a few times and then broke into mocking laughter. “Did your former date cancel?”

“I haven’t asked anyone,” Kíli huffed proudly.

“Ah, so I am the last resort solution?” Arching an elegant brow, she crossed her arms over her chest and let him waffle for a few seconds.

“No,” he finally said, “I didn’t feel like asking just anyone. I wanted to go with someone who means something, you see?”

Her smile grew warmer and her narrow, slender hand pushed through the planks to pat his muscular, lean forearm soothingly.

“Sure I’ll come with you. It will be like old times…Oh, that’s my mother calling. I’ll see you tomorrow?” With a last, reassuring squeeze and a sunny smile, she disappeared into the house, leaving Kíli alone in the garden, pondering how he could convince her of the depth of his affection.

When he rang the doorbell of the neighbouring house the next day, Kíli felt his heart beating in his throat.

“See you there,” he heard her call to her mother and then, the door swung open to reveal his childhood friend in a pale blue dress that complimented her sparkling eyes. She looked like a China doll – precious and perfect – but her mischievous grin was still the same as it had ever been.

“Look at you,” she whistled, “you clean up nicely, Kí.”

“Eh, I have to keep up with the prettiest girl around, don’t I?” he shot back with a wink and offered her his arm to escort her to his car; Fíli – much less arrogant on his big day – had already left with their mother, but Kíli was sure that his brother didn’t need another nervous relative breathing down his neck just yet.

“Ah, flatterer,” Bean laughed but took his arm and gave it the usual, comforting squeeze.

“Not at all,” Kíli protested softly, “you look gorgeous.”

“It’s my best dress,” she admitted, a hint of colour mounting into her cheeks.

“I don’t only mean today,” Kíli jumped on the opening, “even though you do look especially charming on this day of celebration and joy.”

Bean didn’t reply to that, she merely looked at him inquisitively with her birdlike head movement and her bright eyes.

The ceremony turned out to be wonderful and – when a few stray tears rose into Kíli’s eyes at the sight of the boundless happiness of his brother – Bean handed him her embroidered handkerchief without a word.

“Ask the girl to dance.” Kíli looked up only to meet his sister-in-law’s sparkling, green eyes. “You’re not usually one lost for words, are you?”

Heaving a sigh, Kíli recounted all the compliments he had already paid Bean over the years without omitting how easily she had swatted his attempts at suave charm and playful flirtation aside at every turn.

“Hmmmm,” his brother’s siren-wife hummed, tapping a perfectly manicured finger against her full, rosy lips pensively. “How about you drop the act and just tell her the truth then?”

Giving him a hearty slap on the back, she drifted away to entertain the rest of her wedding party and Kíli resolved to take her advice.

“Dance?” he asked nervously as soon as he reached the table at which Bean dreamily was sitting and marvelling at the understated elegance of her surroundings.

“Oh, you don’t have to,” she laughed.

“I want to,” Kíli insisted and led her to the wooden dancefloor in the middle of the room. How often had he dreamed about holding her in his arms like that?

“Bean,” he whispered into her ear. “I really meant it all the times I’ve told you that you’re beautiful.”

“Ah, you’re making fun of me again,” she chided softly, but there was a note of exhaustion and genuine hurt in her voice.

“I am not. I know that I might have behaved despicably when I was younger, but I would have thought that we’re friends and that, one day, you’d realise that I’ve grown up and…that you’d finally believe me.”

Her eyes were wet and round when she looked up at him now; Kíli could only stare at the pale oval of her sweet face, illuminated by dancing lights and flickering candles.

“I am flippant,” Kíli admitted, “because it’s easier to say the very serious things in life as if they meant nothing, but I do cherish you deeply and I think you’ve been the prettiest girl in town since the day Fíli had to cut his hair.”

“I seem to remember,” Bean cut in, “that someone had burned his hair?”

“Irrelevant,” Kíli waved her interjection aside. “What I want to say is…I’ve been in love with you for longer than I can remember and, even if you don’t reciprocate these feelings, I’d be thankful if you couldn’t just dismiss them out of hand.”

He took a deep breath; it felt good to have verbalised all the doubt and the compounded insecurity he had dragged through the years, too afraid to confront them and too enamoured to let them go.

“Oh, you fool,” Bean chuckled and pushed herself onto her tiptoes.

“I swear, if you kiss my cheek like a good sister now, I will scream,” Kíli moaned; they had been like this for too long – him saying dumb stuff and her forgiving him instantly – for her to even hear how much he wanted her to change the way she saw him.

“You’ve always talked too much,” Bean sniggered, caught his face in her soft, warm hands, and pressed her lips to his.

Kíli forgot about the dance and about the people looking on; he simply lifted her into his arms and melted into that first kiss he had fantasised about for years.

This truly was the most blessed day of their existence.

Pairing: Tovar/You

Summary: When two mercenaries come to your village, you decide that you want to befriend the one who seems to be isolated from the rest of the town.

Word Count: 2315

Warnings: fluff!! mild sexual harassment, strangers to friends to lovers

A/N: I wrote all of this in Tik-Tok dms and I’m not sorry for it. I also really love Tovar even if he is a stinky smelly man

Tovar is a stoic man. He doesn’t talk much, if at all, in new environments or around new people. The ever permanent scowl on his face didn’t exactly made strangers want to come talk to him either. Not that he minded all too much, the less people around him, the better.   

When Tovar came to your village alongside William, everyone was instantly hesitant of the Spaniard. They welcomed William with open arms however. It saddened you to see neglected based on face value alone. You knew all too well what it felt like to be based on looks.   

Since you were of age, many men had come to your door in hopes of courting you. Some even daring enough to ask your father for your hand in marriage. You rejected each and everyone’s advance. There just wasn’t an attraction to any of the village men. Besides, when working in the tavern, you knew how truly slimy they were.    

So you tried to talk to Tovar one afternoon as he tended to his steed. When you said “hello”, he ignored you until you tried again. He simply turned to you, eyes roaming your figure quite differently from men you knew. While others looked at you like you were an object, he looked at you as if you were potential danger. Much like a frightened rabbit in the form of a bear.   

“What?” he practically growled out.   

You introduced yourself and he scoffed at you. He turned back to grooming his steed when you tried once more to make conversation with the introverted man. “Your horse is beautiful.”   

Tovar side eyed you and hummed in agreement. For a few moments without anymore of a response from him, you sighed. 

“The villagers seemed quite scared of you.”   

“As they should be,” he responded without thought.    

“Why should they be?” you asked with a slight tilt of your head.   

“I am a killer.”    

“Is William also not a killer?” Tovar snapped his head back towards you, truly looking at you for the first time.   

“What do you want, princessa?”   

“To be your friend.” He scoffed once more at you making you frown at him. “Do you not believe me?”   

“I do not,” he set the brush down before moving to stand in front of you. You refused to back away from him, to show him you were scared of him. “What is it that you truly want from me?”   

“Have you never met someone who didn’t want something from you?” His glare sharpened as he crowded into your space.    

“There are no people out there would don’t want anything.” Tovar practically hissed out.   

“I just want to be your friend, nothing more, nothing less.”   After a while of staring at you, he backed away. When he turned back to grab his brush, you let out a breathe you didn’t know you were holding. He didn’t say anything else as he began to brush his horse once more. You frowned at him before leaving the stables.   

Though you left, you were determined to make him like you. So you cheated slightly. When he arrived, the village had a bonfire with plenty of food to welcome the mercenaries to your home. Tovar had eaten as though he hadn’t had a proper meal in months. Perhaps he hadn’t. But that gave you enough inside into how to break down the stone fortress of his heart.    

The next day at roughly the same time, you found Tovar sitting just behind the cottage him and William were lodging at. He appeared to be whittling a branch into something. You watched him for a moment, tightening your grip on the basket before relaxing with a deep exhale. With a smile on your face, you walked over to him.    

He noticed you as you approached. His frown deepened as he saw you before turning his attention back to the branch in his hands. You lowered yourself to sit beside him, a respectful distance between the two of you. He tensed.    

“I made you some pastries,” you said as you removed the cloth from over the basket. Inside was a dozen, slightly over, of sweetbreads you woke up early to make. Tovar glared at you beige glancing down at the food. He hesitated, looking back and forth between the food and you. “It’s all for you.”   

“Why?” His voice was rough from disuse. Through the scowl on his face, you saw something akin to sadness in his eyes.    

“I wasn’t lying when I said I wanted to be your friend.” You reached into the basket and pulled out a pastry, holding it out of him as a peace offering. Once again, he hesitated before settling the knife and stick down beside him. His fingers brushed yours as he grabbed the bread from you. A shiver ran down your spine at the feel of his skin against yours. You ignored it. Instead you chose to watch the way he sniffed the bread before taking a large bite out of it.   

A giggle escaped out your mouth before you could stop it as you watched he practically devour the pastry. He seemed to shy away from your joy, most likely thinking you were laughing at his expense. Instead, you grab another pastry and hand it to him. “I’m glad you like my baking. I woke up earlier than usual to make these.”   

He grabbed the pastry from you again, eating this one similarly to the other one. You smiled as you watched with, glad to see him loosen up just slightly. Once he finished the treat, you stood up. He watched from the ground as you wiped off the back of your dress. You turned to him once more and with a smile you said, “I’ll leave you to it. Hopefully, we’ll talk again soon.” With a small bow of your head, you walked away from him, ignoring the way his eyes left a trail from fire down your body as he watched you. 

Weeks passed and with them, a friendship bloomed. It was slow of course. Gaining the trust of a grumpy man was hard work but you knew it would be worth it. You just hoped that one day, you would be able to see his smile.  

When you first had that particular thought, it startled you. It was true that you loved to see friends smile but this was a longing you hadn’t felt before. A longing to be the reason behind such a scarce and sacred grin.    

It took only two weeks of feeding Tovar for you to recognize that perhaps your intentions from the beginning weren’t so platonic after all. You, however, knew you trapped yourself in a corner the moment you offered him only friendship.   

When you asked your friends for advice, they all seemed shell shocked at your willingness to be near the scary man. Despite your reassurances he was of no danger to anyone, they tried to convince you to befriend (and potentially marry) a different man. William was one that seemed to highly recommend. You just frowned at them and continued on with your daily meetings with Tovar.   

This day was much like any other. You had a basket of food for Tovar, who you noticed seemed to have gained some weight during his time at your village. You were secretly pleased to see it as winter was beginning to rear its head and he could use all the warmth he could get. He also seemed much healthier than before. Besides, it also meant he truly did enjoy your cooking.    

As you walked to the stables where you knew he would be, you were stopped by Gregor. He had once tried to court you to no avail. He was much too flamboyant for you. “Yes?” you asked nicely.   

“Is it true you have been seeing the Spaniard every day?” He asked straight to the point.   

“I do not see how that is relevant to anyone else.” You moved to step around him but he blocked you once more.   

“I do not wish to see you hurt.” Gregor touched your arm making you flinch away from him.   

“I assure you that Tovar will not hurt me now please get out of my way.” Your tone was sharp like the sword the two traveling mercenaries carried with them. Gregor stared at you as though you had grown another head before side stepping and letting you pass. You gave him a scalding glare before stomping pass him.   

On your walk, you thought of things to calm yourself down. You thought of evening walks around the village. Of watching the children play together right before supper. The way the sun hit the trees just right and casted dark shadows over the pathways. How some evenings you were able to watch Tovar interact with William in a way only those close would ever.    

Plastering a smile onto your face once more, you stepped into the stable only for it to fall. Tovar’s back was pressed flat to the wall as a so called “friend” pressed her chest to his. She was running her hands along his chain mail armor and cooing at him. Your stomach knotted, wanting to run away from the scene and never talk to either of them again but then you noticed him.    

Tovar’s scowl was deeper than anything you’ve ever had aimed at you. He was tensed and his hands were bunched into fists at his side. It was clear as day that he was uncomfortable with her advances and knowing that eased some of the pain from your chest.    

You cleared your throat, drawing both of their attention to you. Your friend smiled at you and gave you a cheery greeting while Tovar seemed to grimace harder, shrinking into himself. With a fake smile, you said while looking her in the eyes, “Could you leave please? You’re making my friend quite uncomfortable and this is the only time we get to have together.” She seemed shocked by your bluntness before she covered it with a slimy smile.   

“I think we were doing just fine.” She turned to bat her eyelashes back up at Tovar. “We were just getting to know each other.”   

“I doubt you need to be that close to get to know one another.” Tovar snorted making your friend glare at you. She huffed as she pulled away from him. When she walked pass you, she allowed her shoulder to bump into yours but you remained still until she was no longer in sight. Only then did Tovar seem to relax.   

He nodded at you in gratitude before taking his seat at the only bench in the stables. You walked over to him as always and sat the basket next to him. His hand grabbed yours before you could move. “Thank you.” He said to you, the usual edge in his voice dulled down.    

“Of course,” you responded with a smile, squeezing his hand before letting it drop. Removing the cloth off the basket, you sat down next to him. When you noticed he didn’t go for the food immediately, you looked back over to him. He stared at you intensely.   

“How did you know I was uncomfortable?” Tovar finally asked after letting you both simmer in an oddly tense moment.   

“You’re not too difficult to read once someone knows you.” You moved to reach into the basket only for Tovar to gently grab your hand once more. His skin was hot against your chilled hand. Blinking up at him, you waited for him to say something. He didn’t. He just explored your face with his eyes, as through there was a secret to be unlocked. His tongue dipped out to wet his lips, catching your attention for just a moment. A moment long enough for Tovar to notice.   

“Was that truly the only reason you stepped in?” He moved the basket to the other side of him before scooting closer to you, his thigh burning yours as he pressed them together. You gulped.   

“What?” Your voice low, mousey even.   

“You are also not that difficult to read once someone knows you.” Tovar placed his hand on the middle of your thigh. His hand large enough to cover the whole thing.    

“I’m afraid I don’t understand what you are referencing.” For the first time since you met him, your heart beat brutally hard against your rib cage but not out of fear. It was another feeling entirely. One that you knew wouldn’t just go away especially after watching his lips spread into a deliriously sweet smile.    

“We both know you aren’t naive enough to not know what I’m talking about.”   

“Do we both know that?” Tovar shook his head at you, a huff of a chuckle escaping him. He left go of your hand, reaching around your head to hold the back of your neck. Your heart beat impossible faster. For a moment you were scared it would hammer its way out of your chest especially as Tovar’s thumb rubbed gently at your pulse point.   

“Bonita,” he whispered before leaning in and pressing the faintest of kisses upon your lips. As he pulled away, your brain had finally caught up. You leaned forward to kiss him back. He hummed happily against you. It was slow, passionate and filled with emotions you weren’t sure you would ever share with another. You lifted your hands to cups his cheeks, pulling him deeper into the kiss. His grip tightened on your thigh as he licked into your mouth, moaning at the taste of you.   

As you both finally pulled away from each other, you breathed deeply. Tovar bumped his nose against yours, letting you feel his smile against your lips.   

“Friends and nothing more, right?” He teased.    

“Oh hush,” you replied as you pulled him in for another mind blowing kiss.

  On 12 October 2017 Dear Elgar, I think you are too young to realise that humans are not as well adapted as we felines. They do not seem to have our ability to just let go and curl up and sleep. They mainly seem to sleep when it is dark. Poor things, I think it’s because their eyes are not as good as ours.You must be aware that if you want her to go on serving you let her have a good night’s sleep. I speak from experience. 13 Oct 2017 ​Dea-purr Quintus she says I is to say thank you for your email even though I felt you were tellings mes offs. Iz gets excited when zshe turns overs in bedz – I think she mights swant zto tickle my belly so I goes ands nuzzles her, somesztimes she pulls my next sto herz which makes me purrrrrrrrrrrrr lotz, butz Iz sdnont understands whys shes cross wiv me & like today at lightening ups inz the zskys wiv birdies teaszings mees she putz me out of her room nd shutsz door on me. I is cryings & puts my paws (thayz be bigg paws I haz *purrrrrrrrrr*) ins gapz under doors but she ignores me. I waz veryz sad nd I cryyd. I is confoozd I just brought her a prezant of birdzy nd she pickd meez up nd putz me outz de door! I  brought zit backs again but now shez stopped me comings in. On 13 October 2017 Dear Elgar, I was not trying to tell you off, more just trying to make you understand that humans are rather unlike us. I’m sorry yours was so misunderstanding of you. It is hard I know. For  some reason mine get narky when I get on the table. They don’t seem to realise it seems natural to me. They will spray me with water. Can’t understand why. 25th Nov 2017 Dear Elgar, I hope your human is feeling a bit better. My human has thought of her lots, she has told me about her. I understand you are bigger than me. How is that for you are still not much more than a kitten?Though you do seem quite adventurous, and an expert at hunting. They do not always seem to appreciate this. They do seem to have some funny ideas, mine seem to get cross when I get on the table. It is such a good place to see will is going on, and I can even see out of the window if I face that way. She sometimes sprays me with water which I think is unnecessary, unkind. Funny things humans. Purrrrrrs to you and my aunty Muffin, and Arya, Quintus 

Dearapurrr Quintus I iz understanding yous – this one had a shock last nights (purr purr purr miaowwwwwwwwwww!! So funny) I had posted a toad through the slightly blocked cat flap (I has got Muffin to type – much faster & I am licking her ears) but my hooman didn’t know until she came to lock up last night. She was squealing (I don’t think it was with delight though 😦  ) as she had to pick it up & put it out of the flap – I was watching & it kepts leaping all over the place she got it onto the cat flap door but as she tried to put it out it jumped at her – she said some words I don’t hear very often – Muffs sez it’s shwairing – it took hooman over 5 mins to get toady out the hole! I waz giggling inside so much I fellz over n my legs were in the air!

Poor you being shqirted wiv water – not nice ats all! My hooman makes a noise like a snake which I knows is bad so I always try to gets as flats as possibles as snakes are naszty thhngs . sometimes I has to run away, but so far no sprayz wiz water. I got my hooman up today at 8am (so she sez) its waz urlier az dem birdiez wer teasing me so muches.

I is off to getz more birdz I thinks – I don’ts knows waz the problemz iz about it coming ins the house to be eats – after all my others foods are INDOORS – silly hooman! Purrs n no fleas (I don’t like havings that stuff on my neck but the bittings has stopped so I gez its a goods things reeelys) Speaks soon Elgar xx *purrrrrr*

Miaowy greetings Uncle Quintus 

I is finally able to get my paws on hooman’s computery thing. Thank you for your writings. My hooman has been very poorly mother says & I am supposed to be keeping her warm, buts this is difficults at times as she moves me off, or says “Feet” – I knows I is meant to sits on her feet as they get cold (I never has cold feets have you?) but they are bony & she wriggles so I need to pounce, then she gets cross with me.

I sometimes worry about this thing of my hooman getting cross. Yesterday she smacked my nose! I was not happy at all with this, and the only reason was I was trying to clean out her breakfast bowl before she had finished – I don’t think I was unreasonable as she had taken HOURS to eat it…

Last night Aunty Muffin boxed my ears – I was just supporting her in keeping our hooman warm, I can’t help it if I am a bit bigger than Aunty Muffin – she needs to let ME have some room so I can be comfy shouldn’t she?

Hooman have me a deep groom this morning – she has taken her time over it! I like them every other day – but at least I has had one now. I stretched out for her, but something happened & I forgots – I puts my teeth & claws into my hooman. She put the furminator away & left the bedroom where we was. I got lonely & I still wanted my belly tickled! Such unreasonable behaviour from her at the moment.

She is also very smelly now, & has a REALLY noisy thing that she uses which makes her look like a dragon smoking (I has heard of these mystical creatures – I would like to grow up & be a dragon I think, does you know how I grows up to be a dragon?) she also coughs really loudly at times – so much so I have fallen off her legs – how is I supposed to do my “job” as foot warmer if she kicks me off?

I is in a mess here I thinks. nothing is going the way it should be. I is not worshipped – although my hooman does get me excellent food I suppose. So far she hasn’t sprayed me with the wet stuff deliberately – how bad is your hooman!?! That’s such an insult (unless you wanted some water – we does not have a table as far as I knows.

Right I has better sends this to yous before she comes back from the little room. Aunty Muffin is now sitting where I WANT TO SIT. It is just NOT FAIR! I is the biggest, bestest & only boy cat – surely they should treats me the bests? I is still only a baby in age.

I found a small squeaky thing outside – but it had a pointed nose – my hooman says its a shrew – & that it wouldn’t make good eatings – she knows about stuff like that so I left it on the mat in the kitchen for her. She didn’t say thank you. it’s all too confoosing for me.

28th Nove 2017 Purrrs Elgar, That was a good piece you sent. I will try to answer your questions First I don’t think your home is bad. There are many worse I understand, where you are not fed well and can be shut out when you want to go in. Humans are funny strange animals. They do odd things like getting wet all over in a thing called a bath, but seem to be almost afraid of rain. I don’t like rain much myself but it is natural.

My human tortured me the other day and said it was for my own good. First I was wound up in a towel, and held by the other human in my house, but I got free, cos I’m strong, but it was no use for the door and window was shut so they got me again. So undignified, I think I deserve more respect. Some fur was cut on my neck and some horrible stinging stuff put on. I got out as soon as the window was opened after I had given her a killing look, and almost decided not to go back but I got hungry.

I am training her, I just look at the food in my dish  but I will only eat it if she adds some of my treats, this way I get a few extra, which is good. She says I will get too fat and already looking fatter. It’s only my winter fur is thick, I don’t have to put on funny clothes and she puts on on lots if it is cold then SHE is fat. I guess your human is in a funny mood because she is not well. I would not leave until she is better, if she is still odd then you could visit me, I hope things improve soon. Purrrs , Quintus 

On 29 November 2017 Dear Elgar,Your message was very kind, but really my humans are not really that bad, and I am still training them. I have always plenty of dry food available, and water to drink, though I prefer the water that is outside. I too get treats every evening, and have trained her to give me extra sometimes.

I don’t usually sleep on my humans bed, but do sometimes. I prefer to be where I can roam as she keeps her door shut at night. At the moment my favourite place is a chair half way up the stairs. I can keep an eye on what is happening, though this cold weather makes me sleepy. Today I only went out for short times.

I have not heard about this dreadful monster but maybe I will stay in, especially she says it will be freezing tonight. Even with my thick fur I can not like that much cold. I am glad your human is a bit better.  I think you are all looking after her very nicely. Just remember not to wake her up.  Many purrrrrs to you, Quintus.

2nd December 2017 Dear Elgar, You send very good letters. Thanks. Presents are things that you give or receive. The food you sent me was a present, sometimes to make things complicated it is called a gift. Humans seem to like having different words for the same thing. Very odd. I still have a little of your special food for it is given to r almost like a great, though more than a great. It sounds fun that you search for yours. Mine are put in a special little dish. The special ones for cleaning my teeth are put there too, but at a different time. Yes, it is too cold.  I usually go out lots, but I suppose staying on my chair much of the time. I think I will go out and do, but come in again very soon. I am intrigued , what is a furminator? I think you must be cleaver to hold it. I have you are kind to warm your humans bed, but I guess it is a comfortable place for you too. My human has a cold but she thinks it is almost better, so maybe she will see you on Monday. 6th December 2017 Purrs Elgar, I am sorry your human is unhappy. I hope she is feeling better today. I nudged my human and she weighed me. She says I am 12lbs, but our scales are not as good as yours. We will try again. My last letter was a bit funny. Maybe the cold does not suit me! I know I have been indoors much more than usual. Fresh air is good for my thinking. (But not too cold).I hope Aunty Muffin is more happy . I s she sick too or just worried about your human. My human says yours has got pneumonia. Oooh Elgar, what do you think of this white stuff they call snow? When I was a kitten I liked to play in it, but this morning I only stayed out briefly, It is still snowing and the trees look as if they are dressed in white, though I am going to curl up on my chair soon. A time called Christmas will be here soon I think. Maybe you will get a present then. I was given a funny mouse like thing but it was not alive, but it had a wonderful scent, which made me play with it as if it was alive. The humans have more things but I liked the paper and ribbon best, and there can be a useful box. They do odd things like put a tree inside and then hang things on it. I thought these were for playing with, but my human says NO! She  was very cross when I tried to claim the . (But that was when I was a kitten). I still play with the hanging things when there is no-one there, though usually they shut the door. I don’t think you should try to climb the indoor tree if you have one as I think you would be too heavy for it. I look forward to hearing your you. 10th December 2017 Dear Uncle Quintus Thank yous got your letter. It is very cold outside isn’t it? Mother, Aunty Muffin & I stayed with our hooman for a Very long time – she didn’t go to sleep very early – not su/purrre why, but she’s kept us all up until about birdie time – but I waz on her lap downstairs whilst she was awake so I go so many cuddles that I ignored the birds & we all slept in until this afternoon. Hooman is cross with herself for not sleeping at what she thinks are the right times to sleep – I don’t understand this as any time is a good time for 40winks! I has been better behaved & have been rewarded for it – so until it becomes boring I will carry on – last night I was chasing treats all around her bedroom! The girls were boring on the bed eating their pile so delicately! Pooh girls are silly! I think it is much more fun to chase my bits of treats – sometimes I miss a bit & find it later!

Hooman wants to know how much of my special food you have left? She said something about presents – which I am confused about a bit – but I think you will get some for your present. I tried to help her do some drawing yesterday – but it seems my paws are just a bit too wide to hold a pencil – I can hold the furminator and it remove some loose fur around my face – I is very clever to do this – neither of the girls can do it! I think you are too young to realise that humans are not as well adapted as we felines. They do not seem to have our ability to just let go and curl up and sleep. They mainly seem to sleep when it is dark. Poor things, I think it’s because their eyes are not as good as ours.

You must be aware that if you want her to go on serving you let her have a good night’s sleep.

(I know legit nothing about Iron Fist except that Davos deserved it and the main character sux, so I will do my best.) "I don't think so!!" The Doctor skids 'round the corner with a mad laugh, chasing a creature that might have been a dog, if dogs had six eyes and were green. It was clear that she was enjoying the chase, and the creature was, too. "C'mere boy!" she called, waving a slimy tentacle-thing towards the- for lack of a better term- dog. "Got a nice yummy... uh... treat for you! Come one! We gotta get you back to the TARDIS before someone sees!" The creature let out a bark that sounded rather like a guinea pig squeak before bounding towards- and past- the Doctor, directly towards a man she had somehow overlooked before hidden in the shadows. "Hello! Don't mind us," she laughs nervously. "Had a bit of trouble with the leash. Acid spit and all. But he's harmless."

The Doctor looks up at him with an awkward smile and wraps her arms around the thing before his slobber eats away at the fabric. "He's a Gorlok. Kind of cute once you get past the eyes. And the smell. Incredibly loyal, though. Fantastic trackers. This guy got stranded on Earth and I've been trying to get him back to his owner." She stands and sticks out her hand to shake. "I'm the Doctor. Know you didn't exactly mean to, but if you hadn't been here I'd probably have to chase him down another few blocks!"

Davos continues to glower at the strange female, expressionlessly; the only tell that he is still young, in his thirties at best, is the enormity of his brown, long-lashed eyes.

Those eyes dart to the smelly creature at his feet.  He considers kicking it, but is waylaid when the woman offers her hand in a peaceable gesture. "You hail from another dimension?"

Thankfully for the Doctor, Davos is no stranger to spatio-temporal anomalies. The only difference is, he sees them not as scientific, but  rather, mystical, and religious, phenomena.

"I am called Davos." But he doesn't shake her hand. He only stares at it with suspicion.

Your brother was the one who's mess you came to clean up?" she asked sympathetically. "A healer? Yeah, I s'pose you could say that. Among other things. Healer, scientist, inventor, etcetera etcetera. How'd you end up here?"

Davos's whole face wrinkles. This woman reminds him of Claire Temple: the last healer whom he knew, a friend to his brother Danny, and to that whore from the Hand who turned Danny fully against him.   But despite her dubious allegiances, Claire had been just as kind and bright-souled.

She had even gotten him to consume a slice of pizza. It was chewy. But it wasn't quite so poisonous as he'd suspected. "Excessive chatter is a vexation to the spirit," he comments reluctantly. But he doesn't move away from her.

"You are skilled at deflecting questions," he further comments, making no note of her accurate assessment of his situation.

As he walks, with haste and drive, forgetting the purpose of walking with her--to collect intel--his lips loosen. "It's a nonissue. I took from him a power he was far too irresponsible to wield, but he stole it a second time, and gave it to his lover.  A woman who long  belonged to a terrorist organization called the Hand, an abominable body of deceivers who turned children into weapons in the name of 'cleansing' society. Those whom I serve are the true healers of this world and its cancers.  I have been deprived of my birthright at every turn, and I very much doubt one eccentric woman from another dimension could fix that."

She calls him strong and silent; it's not the first time he's been teased for his serious nature. It always slides off him like water droplets off oily feathers.   This time it spreads an odd warmth in the pit of him.

He stops and turns to face her; pleasure. Pleasure is dangerous. Pleasure is self-indulgence. Indulgence does not come into the equation of a warrior, or a weapon. "For all I know, you could be an operative of theirs, come to monitor me in my hour of liberation. Come to stop me, since I escaped prison."

He advances on her quickly then, with an expression of dangerous but carefully lidded rage.

Funnily enough, she doesn't say it to tease him about his stoic nature. She finds it rather grounding. But The Doctor's brows furrow, a little line forming between them as he talks about this group called The Hand. People who turn children in to weapons. 'Cleansing' society. The idea makes her gut churn with disgust. "You'd be surprised what I'm capable of," she says rather darkly, her smile slipping from her face. Instantly, the Doctor knows whose side she's on as she contemplates some way to learn more about the Hand. She's too caught up in her own thoughts to notice the shift in his mood, and by the time she does, he's upon her. The Doctor is struck again with how much bigger he is, despite being barely an inch taller than she is. "Don't you think if I was an operative of this Hand group I'd have made some move to stop you?" she replied stiffly, her eyes narrowing at him. "Why would I offer to help you? I protect this planet from people and groups exactly like the one you're describing. Hurting kids? Turning them into weapons? No, I don't think so." She is all too familiar with children being used as pawns for the ambitions of people who are meant to be their protectors.

"I think that if you're saying THAT, it's more proof you're not Hand than anything else, because you've clearly got no idea how low they can stoop.  And how good they are at lying." He raises from his fighting crouch, a rather eloquent pose that twists his arms and wrists and renders one combative unit of his whole beautifully poised body. It begins to rain. They're both soaked in minutes. He doesn't even notice.  He doesn't even blink as the droplets roll off his close-shaven head and long eyelashes.

"What will you offer me, if I agree to go where you lodge?"

I'm not much for violence, but... I can make exceptions." She isn't overly concerned about the rain, but pulls up her hood, though it doesn't do much good in the torrential rain. "A bed to rest, for one. But I can help you find whoever it is you're looking for. I have a ship. I can travel anywhere, might be able to track down the Hand and help you stop them."

" . . . . . " He's clearly weighing his options.  His attire is, literally, a paper-thin, too-big hoodie, and blue, sopping hospital scrub pants.  And no shoes. Normally, while abroad outside the sanctum of K'unlun, Davos wears sharp-tailored, austere black business suits.  And smells like very rare, very expensive incense.

To call him unusually unkempt, unusually desperate, in this moment, is an understatement. "They've been disbanded. Their leaders scattered.  Some dead.  I am a warrior without an honor code, or a people, to protect." He's trying to remain calm, but there are very protrusive veins in the center of his forehead and his neck. "I am directionless." He grinds his jaw. "I have nothing. Nothing but my principles. Principles everyone living but me has abandoned."

Because it is good to turn upon one's friends, but when you turn it upon your enemies, it allows them the upper hand.

"You would have me show weakness, and then, does that not compromise the integrity of my protection?"

He pauses mid-philosophy, however, to glance around. "I don't understand, where is your home?"

Davos simply nods, sharp and precise. He ascends the stairs as if it's a holy mission from the gods.  He pivots at an exact 90 degree angle and finds the fifth door on the left. Inside is a massive wardrobe full of attire that would bleach the hair of the most stalwart warrior.  Why is there celery on that suitcoat? Why is that scarf covered in rainbows?  Why are there Converse in multiple colors? "This is absurd."

He wrinkles his nose in distaste. Nevertheless within ten minutes he settles on a combination of the most neutral colors he can find, which come from the Eleventh Doctor's wardrobe, minus, of course, that hideous bowtie. He returns to the Doctor's side with the same bemused expression. "Are you a shape-shifter?  You have clothes for at least twelve other beings up there."
